hen I published my first community magazine, our oldest daughter was in the eighth grade. Our son was in kindergarten, and our youngest daughter hadn’t yet started school. The strange thing is that it feels like 2009 was just yesterday. Fast forward, and our oldest daughter is now a senior in college, our son is an eighth grader, and our youngest daughter is in seventh grade. As you know, I often write about time flying by. This past weekend marked another milestone for the Breaux household. Ashley, our oldest daughter, celebrated her 21st birthday! Much to our surprise, Ashley invited us to go out with her group of friends on her special night in downtown San Diego. After repeatedly asking her if she was sure about having her parents tag along, my wife and I reluctantly agreed to go (along with another lifelong friend of ours that Ashley refers to as Aunt Wendy). We needed another adult from our generation for moral support. The group started at a count of 15 people. We all had dinner at a restaurant downtown before Ubering to the first club. The intentions were to stick around for a little while and then head out. That plan didn’t work out so well, as we ended up staying for the duration of the evening. The night was filled with a variety of emotions. I was observing our baby girl in her adult environment for the very first time. Although we were very much interacting with the group, at times I felt like a fly on the wall – silently observing and taking in the entire experience. She was having a great time Derrick and his daughter Ashley circa 2005. Time flies! with her close friends, laughing, dancing, and celebrating. More of Ashley’s friends kept arriving. Some arrivals were clearly unexpected and a special surprise to her. The entire situation touched our hearts. There was one common theme – everyone was there to celebrate with her on her special day. It was at that moment that I realized our baby girl was grown up. Although some may see it as unconventional, we had a great time celebrating with our daughter and her friends that night. I would like to give a special thanks to Ashley’s friends for being such an important part of her life and enthusiastically welcoming us old people into their circle. I still don’t feel like I’m a “grown up” yet. In many aspects, I still feel the same way that I felt when I was a teenager. But make no mistake about it, watching my baby girl turn 21 years old definitely puts me one step closer in my search to feel grown up. Oh, to be young again…

to volunteering our time and expertise in the local community and around the globe,” said Stephanie. She and Eric have two sons, 12-year-old Tyler and 9-year-old Austin. The Dixon family has many interests, including hiking, soccer, fishing, camping, and traveling. Tyler is a seventh grader at Carmel Valley Middle School. He plays soccer for the local DMCV Sharks Club, is learning to surf in Del Mar, and plays guitar. Austin is in fourth grade at Sage Canyon Elementary School and also plays soccer for the DMCV Sharks. He is currently involved with flag football through Carmel Valley Friday Night Lights. The boys have also accompanied their parents on a recent trip to Cambodia with International Health Emissaries. “We felt very fortunate that we were able to bring Tyler and Austin on our latest trip to help those in need. She and Eric have provided care in Cambodia twice, Guatemala twice, and Peru twice. According to the Dixons, these trips are a wonderful way to help those in need while traveling to truly amazing locations. Eric is a native San Diegan who graduated from Torrey Pines High School in 1994. Stephanie was born in Northern California and was raised in Reno, NV. The Dixon family moved into their current home in Del Mar Mesa about a year ago, and they love the area. “We really enjoy having so many other families with children nearby. We also love being close to two of our favorite places: Torrey Pines State Beach and Peñasquitos Canyon. We can often be found hiking at the beach and mountain biking on the trails in Peñasquitos Canyon,” related Stephanie. 

piano when she was six years old, Niki asked her parents for piano lessons. Today, she shares her love of the

piano and teaching expertise with her young students. At the Niki Shojaei Piano Studio, students ages 4 to 18 learn to play the piano in a nurturing, fun, and individualized environment. “I incorporate an atmosphere of play into the lesson through learning games which enable children to learn most effectively,” Niki shared. Depending on each student’s goals, Niki teaches music theory, ear training, technique, practice advice, and performance preparation. She tailors the activities for each age group, “from being playful and enthusiastic playing alphabet games with a four-year-old to teaching scales and echnic to a 13-year-old,” she said. Matching her teaching to each student’s age, learning style, and

goals is an important part of her philosophy. “I look to see how my students interact, their character, and adapt to teach each individual to ensure they enjoy the learning experience and benefit from it most,” Niki explained. “Every lesson is a balancing act between what I’ve planned to teach the student on that day and what on-the-fly adaptations I must make out of awareness and sensitivity to the attitudes, moods, and behaviors the student brings to the lesson.” Learning the piano has benefits outside of the music world, too. Through learning music, Niki acknowledged, “Students gain confidence, social skills, and academic expertise along with their new musical abilities.” Certified as an elementary piano teacher by the Royal Conservatory of Canada, Niki also holds degrees in piano performance and electrical engineering from Tehran Azad University. Her educational background helps her to embrace new technology and trends for teaching music. Niki researches and utilizes the most up-to-date digital tools and apps to teach. Niki believes that all children can learn to play music. It takes the joint efforts of the teacher, the student, and the parents. The students get to showcase their new skills a few times throughout the year at performances and recitals for their parents and community. “We all have a very important role to play and when we work together the result is a positive and rewarding experience,” she said. “The student will develop discipline, sensitivity, ability to focus, and enjoy playing music.”  SPECIAL ADVERTISEMENT

MATH MAVEN Rachana Madhukara Promotes the Richness of Mathematics by LINDA FRABL | photo by Zeena Gregg Photography

R

achana Madhukara, a 15-year-old sophomore at Canyon Crest Academy, has entered the Greater San Diego Science and Engineering Fair for the past three years with wonderful results. In fact, she is now the secretary of the fair for her school’s Students Association Body. Rachana revealed, “This fair is the perfect venue to express myself scientifically the way I want to: through research, which is a very valuable skill. It lets me present my original work instead of being a typical science competition which, in my opinion, just promotes regurgitating memorized information.” Obviously Rachana did something right, because she’s won numerous accolades at the fair. Rachana won first place for her seventh grade project, “Devising an Effective Way of Solving the Rubik’s Cube.” The following year Rachana won first place for her “Devising a Secure and Efficient Hybrid Cryptosystem” project, and she won a paid trip to attend space camp in Huntsville, AL. In the ninth grade, Rachana’s entry, “Dynamics on the Rado Graph,” won first place, and qualified for the California State Science Fair, where the project earned first place for the mathematics division, and won the Math Teacher’s Award for Achievement in Mathematical Sciences. Citing mathematics as her favorite subject, Rachana is very involved in her school’s math club. She helps run the annual CCA Math Bonanza, a student math competition. Rachana also runs the Julia Robinson Math Festival in San Diego, and proclaimed, “This festival inspires students to explore the beauty of mathematics through activities that encourage collaborative, creative problem solving. I run this festival so that more kids can experience the richness of mathematics before they are pushed too much into the rote mathematics taught in school.”

When she isn’t honing her math and science skills, Rachana plays the violin and studies Carnatic music. In addition, she is an avid fencer, and has recently discovered yoga. She added, “I also really enjoy tinkering with my 3D printer.” Though this math maven isn’t sure where she wants to attend college, Rachana admitted, “I think I want to major in mathematics and become a research professor, or just work in the industry. It would also be cool to start a business one day!” Whatever path Rachana takes, she will surely see continued success. 

dental implants Bruxism and

by Tarkan Sidal, DDS, MD

What is bruxism? Bruxism is a movement disorder of the jaws defined by teeth grinding and clenching during sleep or while awake. Bruxism is considered a factor in causing temporomandibular disorders, excessive tooth and restoration wear, and failure of dental restorations, creating excessive pressure on native teeth, dental restorations, and dental implants – resulting in bone loss around the implants or even their failure.

Why are your dental implants at risk? As expected, excessive bruxism significantly affects the longevity and function of dental implants. The implant complex is composed of multitudes of structures: bone tissue, implant, abutment, various screws, etc., and all these structures are typically under the forces of mastication (chewing). An implant’s lack of compressible structure highlights the risks of heavily bruxing patients. Dental implants do not behave like natural teeth. Due to their design and positioning to the bone, native teeth absorb forces similar to a suspension. Natural teeth in the back of the jaw also have more roots, enabling them to withstand heavy chewing. Dental implants do not have multiple roots, and this has to be compensated by increasing the diameter and the length of the implant. In addition, the human jaw is designed like a Class III lever, with the force of biting on the front teeth, far from the fulcrum and thus protecting it. When there is bite irregularity in the back of the jaws, along with bruxing and clenching, the jaw acts like a Class II lever where the load is closer to the fulcrum, transmitting more force to the joint. In simpler terms, picture a nutcracker device: the joint is the fulcrum of the device and if you move the food item to the back, it is easier to crush it with smaller force.

In addition to their multi-rooted structure, natural teeth in the back position have larger crowns to withstand the forces of chewing. A dental implant crown is kept smaller than a natural tooth to minimize the forces of chewing transmitted directly to the bone since there is no suspension present. Another clever design with natural teeth is proprioception, meaning that a natural tooth is an organ connected to one’s body through the jaw, possessing a feedback mechanism to the brain, which can adjust bite force without conscious thinking. With dental implants, this ability is limited due to a lack of periodontal ligament, making the implants compatible with normal chewing forces but vulnerable to heavy abnormal forces like bruxism. Dental implant dentistry is a state-of-the-art technology that has proven itself since the time of its advent and it is here to stay. In a sense it is similar to but much easier than hip and knee replacements – they both help us overcome the wear and tear of our bodies. Now that more people are choosing dental implant dentistry – a hybrid dentition of natural and implanted teeth functioning together – as an answer for tooth loss, it highlights the importance of bruxism and its effects.

How can you protect your dental implants and preserve a healthy smile? A prescription orthotic bite splint can ensure that your dental implant complex functions properly with the rest of your native teeth. The splint enables the distribution of the excessive force over the entire dental arch rather than focusing the force to a specific area. Need for an orthotic bite splint can be determined after the patient’s bite analysis, traditionally observed by the family dentist or a dentist who specializes in that particular area. 

THE CREAM ALWAYS RISES TO THE TOP Milk, if left by itself, undergoes a process called homogenization. During this process, the lighter fatty portions of milk rise to the top due to lesser density, very much like oil and water. These fatty portions are then skimmed and made into a separate product called cream. Similarly, as we pursue our goals and objectives in life, we will go through several stages of transformation in order to achieve life’s personal best.

One of these stages is called self-doubt. When experiencing self-doubt, you should reflect on previous successes. We all have a history of successes. If it wasn’t so, we wouldn’t be where we are today and in the pursuit of our next vision.

Brown would say, “You gotta be hungry!” Hunger is that internal, burning desire that remains present and will not go away until your goals are accomplished. Hunger will wake you up in the middle of the night and will not let you rest until you find a way to incorporate that “hunger thought” into an actionable step. Those closest to you, and perhaps strangers, will be able to see the hunger in your eyes and hear the hunger in your voice. Their acknowledgement of your shared vision will become moments of confirmation and well-needed cheers, which are simply designed to keep the hunger activated. Ultimately, it is your hunger, that hunger, which will flush out the self-doubt, causing you, “The Cream” to rise to the top. Expect Great Things to Happen! 

Take actionable steps toward your goal and be willing to adjust your plan accordingly. At times, I have found that as I visualize my next accomplishments, learning something new becomes a requirement. It is recommended to get to know who the players are and the structure of the game. UNIVERSAL LEARNING SOUL Charter School Equips Students to Thrive in All Areas of Life by SAMANTHA EDWARDS | photo by JESSICA BREAUX

hen educators Marisa Fogelman, Michael Grimes, and Wendy Kaveney collectively realized that they were operating in an outdated model of education, they took matters into their own hands. SOUL Charter School was carefully developed by this founding team and officially opened its doors to seventh and ninth graders this year. “We are the first charter school approved by the San Diego County Office of Education in 15 years and the first charter school ever approved to open within the San Dieguito Union High School District boundaries,” shared Michael. SOUL stands for School Of Universal Learning, a holistic approach to education that teaches equally to all parts of a student’s being – mentally, emotionally, socially, physically, and personally. “We have innovated every aspect of the school day in order to meet the needs of today’s students in today’s world,” Marisa said. First and foremost, SOUL offers a conscious and intentional school culture in which students feel safe and free to be their authentic selves. One of the ways students develop an understanding of all aspects of themselves is through SOUL’s Integra program, rooted in the Latin word meaning “entire, complete, and whole.” Students take Integra three times each day – in the morning to get grounded,

their life passions and purpose,” explained Michael. “We then work with students to give them the tools and skills they need to create the life of their dreams.” In addition to Integra, the SOUL experience includes an entrepreneurial track, conscious meal time, Essential Life Education courses, and RAREE Explorations, which encompass all A-G required courses taught through a series of nine-week explorations that are engaging, experiential, and applicable. Class sizes are small to allow for individualized attention. The school also offers a shadow program, where prospective students can spend a day on campus and get a feel for the SOUL culture. While SOUL currently serves only seventh and ninth grades, the school will continue to grow vertically. Next year SOUL will serve students in seventh through 10th grades, the following year grades seven through 11 will be offered, and by year four, the school will be fully built out to include grades seven through 12. “A parent that recognizes that our current system of education is failing their child on so many levels will run to SOUL,” Marisa said. “At SOUL, we provide exceptional education that awakens students to know who they are, discover their passions and purpose, and thrive holistically to achieve both mental and life mastery. That is our mission. You won’t find a similar mission at any other school.”  SPECIAL ADVERTISEMENT

North County Dance Arts Showcase

Carmel Valley Students Work on Nature Projects

Carmel Valley-based dance studio, North County DanceArts, Inc. (NCDA), held its annual showcase called “The Journey” in La Jolla over the summer. The showcase consisted of two separate shows on the same day, each featuring approximately 40 selections to demonstrate varying levels of talent. “The Journey” was inclusive of all styles of dance – ballet, tap, jazz, hip hop, pointe, contemporary, lyrical, and acro dance. The dancers themselves ranged in age from three years old to adult in all levels of dance, with award-winning choreography by NCDA’s professional instructors. “Hands down North County DanceArts gives the best recital we have ever seen,” said Steve Shirley in a review of the show for San Diego Theatre Reviews. For 37 years, NCDA has provided dance instruction for all levels with a focus on technique, terminology, and discipline in a nurturing environment. For information about upcoming performances, competitions, classes, or volunteer opportunities visit www.northcountydancearts.com.

Students from several area schools including Canyon Crest Academy, Torrey Pines High School, Carmel Valley Middle School, and Pacific Trails Middle School recently teamed up with staff from the San Dieguito River Valley Conservancy (SDRVC) and the San Elijo Lagoon Conservancy to work on lagoon habitat restoration projects. Joe DeWolf, a professional biologist who works in the San Dieguito River Park, educated the students about the ecology, ecosystem, and conversation of the lagoon as they removed weeds, widened trail paths, and gathered seeds from local plants. The students who participated were Christopher Yang, Stephen Yang, Mike Bai, Jeffrey Guo, Nathan Guo, Anthony Jiang, Claire Jiang, Eric Li, Raymond Li, Andrew Peng, Ethan Tran, Timothy Tran, Michael Wang, Richard Wu, Lynne Xu, Amanda Zhang, Andrew Zhang, Ashley Zhang, Patrick Zhang, Zoe Zhang, and Samantha Zhu.

Scripps Hospitals Ranked First in San Diego The combined programs of Scripps Green Hospital and Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla were recently ranked No. 1 in the San Diego region, No. 6 in California, and among the best in the nation in eight specialties on the U.S. News & World Report’s annual Best Hospitals list. The U.S. News rankings recognize the nation’s top 50 out of 4,658 hospitals that excel in treating patients with the most challenging healthcare needs. Scripps La Jolla and Scripps Green hospitals were also designated as highperforming in several other areas and achieved the highest possible score on performance treating nine relatively common adult procedures and conditions. “Ranking No. 1 in San Diego and among the best in the nation is the result of the hard work of our physicians, nurses, and staff who focus every day on always getting better,” said Chris Van Gorder, President and CEO of Scripps Health. “While we are deeply honored by this recognition, it’s really our patients who are the winners because they have access to outstanding healthcare right here at home.”

New Dance Studio Coming to Carmel Valley Royal Academy of Performing Arts (RAPA) and Del Mar Ballet have merged to create one new entity: Pacific Arts Dance Center. Both centers were located on Sorrento Valley Rd. for the past three years, but after a recent zoning issue, both were forced to close the doors at their respective locations. With an attitude of integrity and a love for the art of dance, the new studio will open to the Carmel Valley community in the fall. Pacific Arts Dance Center will offer classes in a variety of styles including ballet, hip-hop, and jazz, and will also offer special classes for adults and children. Classes are now open for registration. For more information call 858-264-ARTS or visit www.pacificartsdance.com.

Local Student Named Tennis Champion Brandon Nakashima, a junior at High Bluff Academy in Carmel Valley, was named the 16s Singles Champion at the USTA Boys 18s and 16s National Championships held in Kalamazoo, MI in August. The tournament is the single most important event of the year for over 400 topranked junior tennis players across the country. It consists of 10 days of intense tennis competition, with players vying to win the championship title and the wild card into the main draw of the U.S. Open Jr. Tournament. In the 16s Singles, Brandon, the No. 1 seed, needed just 55 minutes to defeat his doubles partner, No. 8 seed Stefan Dostanic to win the championship. Brandon did not lose a set in the entire tournament, losing just 24 games en route to the title. He earned the wild card to the U.S. Open Junior and was also invited to play in the Jr. U.S. Davis Cup in Europe. Learn more at www.ustaboys.com.

SD Botanic Garden’s Fall Plant Sale The San Diego Botanic Garden will hold their annual Fall Plant Sale on Oct. 21 and 22 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Oct. 23 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Thousands of plants have been donated by over 100 generous local growers, wholesalers, retail nurseries, and individuals to make the Fall Plant Sale the largest and most diverse plant sale in San Diego County. IN THE SPOTLIGHT

IF IT HASN’T FIXED ITSELF...

When?

Therapeutic Literacy Center and Arrowsmith Offer Real Solutions for Improving Learning Capacities for Success in School and in Life photo by Zeena Gregg Photography

T

he professional and passionate team at the Therapeutic Literacy Center (TLC) knows that learning difficulties don’t have to be permanent. “We see it every day. Sometimes parents cross their fingers and hope that things will change, but it’s rare that change happens by itself. If it hasn’t fixed itself yet…when?” shared Founder Maria Bagby. TLC identifies and permanently strengthens the root cause of the problems and significantly improves learning capacities. “The investment in identifying and strengthening the underlying cognitive skills is uniquely different than educational therapy and tutoring.”

(www.arrowsmithsandiego.com) for the more complex learning needs. It’s exciting to expand our repertoire of tools we can use for individuals that have an IEP with a diagnoses of many more learning disabilities (now including non-verbal learning disability) and other more complex issues related to critical thinking, fluid reasoning, symbol relations, memory for information, quantification sense (related to math difficulties), visual and/ or auditory processing, and what is referred to as symbolic and artefactual thinking.

“Sometimes parents cross their fingers and hope that things will change, but it’s rare that change happens by itself. If it hasn’t fixed itself yet…when?”

How is TLC different from other learning centers? According to Maria, traditional tutoring and repetition of tasks may address the immediate problem if the cause is missed or poor instruction, but those strategies do not correct the cause of the problem. When a child is smart but struggling in school, it is painful for the student and for the family. And when a young adult is

struggling with the demands of the workplace, it can be terribly confusing. “Difficulties in school and work eventually affect self-esteem in all aspects of life,” she said. TLC fixes the cause rather than focusing only on the symptoms. What programs does TLC use? “I like to say that we have a ‘system’ – not a program. We don’t apply a program to a client. We have many programs and tools we use to individualize a plan. These include AST-R/S/C (Auditory Stimulation Training for Reading/Spelling and Comprehension, AMPS (Attention, Memory and Processing Skills), EFT (Executive Function Training), IM (Interactive Metronome), the Lindamood Bell programs’ tools, to name a few. In 2017 we added the Arrowsmith Program

Does TLC provide tutoring? “Yes, we do. Sometimes tutoring is all that is needed. In these cases, we provide tutoring using strategies learned from the cognitive programs we use for therapy.” What else does TLC offer? The center also offers a parent support group for parents and regular events with speakers on topics such as: “What exactly is ADHD? The components of attention and strategies to improve, “Why Doesn’t My Child SPECIAL ADVERTISEMENT

“It’s a short-term investment for a lifetime of change.” – Maria Bagby, owner Turn in Their Homework?” and “What happens when the Common Core approach isn’t working for my child?” The team at TLC knows that by making changes in underlying cognitive skills, we don’t have to struggle with learning in school and in the workplace. This realization is what prompted Maria to leave the educational system and establish TLC. The center has expanded three times since moving to Solana Beach in 2012. “We have facilitated 23 children exiting special education and many others that were in the process of qualifying in SST meetings. In the adult world, we have helped numerous young people make the transition from school to work,” said Maria. Is TLC for everyone? “No. I refer out about 15% of the people that come in to meet us. Our level of success is high – very high – but I skew our data by choosing only the ‘right’ kids to work with. My commitment is to work only with people that match what we have and to help find the right solutions for those that don’t work with us.” Who do you work with? “We work with smart kids that are struggling in school and in the workplace.

We have students from grade one through young adult. Right now we have a woman in her 70’s strengthening her memory and processing skills! But most of our clients are families with students in grades one through high school. Many of our students don’t have any diagnosis at all and many have the support of having an IEP in school.” Additionally, TLC works with local audiologists specializing in Auditory Processing Disorder (APD) and serves as a Deficit-Specific Auditory Processing Disorder treatment center. We have treatments for the four main types or deficit areas and are having great success in significantly improving if not erasing the deficit completely. All therapeutic programs are customized to each individual need and are designed to be fun and life-changing. The culture at TLC is focused on relationship and knowledge that every student is incredibly smart with quirky glitches that are creating problems for them. What do I do to find out if TLC can help me or my child? Call us to schedule a consultation or attend a parent information meeting where you can hear other parents talk about their experiences. 

Q& A with principal

MARY ANNE NUSKIN

What is your role as principal?

students in a technology-rich environment.

My role as principal is to inspire students to learn and teachers to teach. Each day I strive to...

4. Work to establish a positive school culture where:

1. Build a middle school community that supports positive student connections with teachers and peers, and positive staff connections with colleagues and administration. 2. Encourage and support focused collaboration centered on meeting the needs of each individual student, which will include common learning goals for each course of study, measured with common learning assessments. 3. Work to ensure our academic opportunities will come with rigorous curriculum for all

• Staff have a shared sense of purpose and values • Creativity, teamwork, positivity, and goalorientedness are highly regarded • Staff and students collaborate often • Student wellness is supported by the school community The heart of our success will come from the focused question, “What’s best for kids?” What is the most rewarding part of your job? The most challenging?

is the day-to-day interactions with students. Watching students succeed in their academics and/or social-emotional milestones is fulfilling. A common challenge that comes with all jobs in education is the lack of time. We always struggle with wanting more time to work with students and collaborate with colleagues; however, our school is goal-oriented and strategic in using our time wisely to meet our shared vision. What is the overall mission of PTMS? VISION STATEMENT We believe that together, we ignite the joy of learning to inspire confident, curious, and creative global citizens.

hoosing the right lawyer can be a stressful decision in an already challenging time. The attorneys at The Law Offices of Nancy J. Bickford are dedicated to addressing the divorce and separation needs of each of their clients in a positive, collaborative manner. With four attorneys and three support professionals working exclusively in the area of family law, the firm has the manpower to handle cases with teamwork and efficiency, and the ability to match each client with the lawyer that best suits their individual case. Though they specialize in high asset property divorces, Nancy and her team also have extensive experience in other areas such as custody litigation, premarital agreements, and mediation consultation. Before she began practicing law 19 years ago, Nancy gained extensive experience in the business and finance industries. With a B.S. Dual Major in both Systems Analysis and Mathematics from Miami University, and a MBA from Golden Gate University, Nancy is also a Certified Public Accountant (CPA). She worked for Arthur Andersen & Co. in San Francisco where she audited businesses and financial institutions. From there, she moved on to work as a controller for a privately run firm operating hotels and real estate investments. After earning her J.D. from the California Western School

of Law, Nancy was immediately attracted to providing dissolution assistance to clients in San Diego, and soon after became a Certified Family Law Specialist (CFLS). Today she is the only Certified Family Law Specialist in San Diego County who is also a licensed Certified Public Accountant with a Master of Business Administration. In 2002, she founded The Law Offices of Nancy J. Bickford in Carmel Valley. The lawyers on Nancy’s team pride themselves on their direct approach with clients and making their clients’ needs a top priority. Nancy explained, “Our attorneys are honest with clients when discussing the strengths and weaknesses of their cases. With this information clients are empowered to analyze the costto-benefit of any action they wish to take in their case, and can make logical and sound decisions.” While the firm seeks to resolve conflict quickly and avoid court intervention whenever possible, Nancy’s team is prepared to be highly aggressive if need be, to attain the results their clients seek. “The assistance of highly qualified family law attorneys, such as those in our firm, can make all the difference in obtaining a fair, just, and comprehensive resolution in our client’s case,” she said. Former client Sarah confirmed, “From the moment I stepped into Nancy’s office I was greeted by friendly staff who immediately made me feel welcomed and at ease during

LOCAL NAMED MRS. CALIFORNIA OUTSTANDING MARRIED WOMAN photo by Casper Photogenics

armel Valley resident Carolyn Kirner-Schmidt, also known as Mrs. San Diego 2016, competed in the Mrs. California America Pageant in Palm Springs in June. She was awarded the title of Mrs. California Outstanding Married Woman 2017 for her community commitment, volunteering for meaningful causes, and being an exemplary role model for women. Each year one woman is selected by Pageant Director Loni Kallay for this special award. “It was an amazing experience,” Carolyn said about the pageant. “I was impressed with the achievements and selflessness of the contestants. It shows us that beauty is not merely what you see, it is the character of a woman that makes her beautiful.” Carolyn and the other contestants competed in several events including swimsuit, interview, and stage show. Her platform is to raise money for

the nonprofit Victoria’s Voice, which provides first responders with a lifesaving medication for drug overdose patients. Since her crowning as Mrs. San Diego and leading up to the pageant, Carolyn has been participating in fundraising events in as many local communities as possible, from Oceanside to Chula Vista. “I met so many San Diegans out in the community who were encouraging and uplifting to me,” Carolyn said. Aside from pageantry, Carolyn and her husband Chuck are active in San Diego. They enjoy bike riding, boogie boarding, sailing, hiking, doing jigsaw puzzles, and attending local sports games. She is also a practicing family law attorney with her own office in Carmel Valley. Carolyn will be competing in the Mrs. California America Pageant again in June 2018. arrett Smith didn’t waste any time getting involved in his new community after relocating from Texas just two years ago. He joined the Del Mar Rotary Club soon after arriving, and “a whole new world of service opportunities opened up to me,” he said. Today, Barrett serves as the chair of the Rotary Community Service Committee. “We work with homeless veterans, charter schools, lifeguards, food banks, substance abuse organizations, and a host of other charities around the county with at least one major service project undertaken every month,” Barrett explained. About a year ago, he also connected with the Boys & Girls Clubs of San Dieguito, which has two clubhouses in Carmel Valley. “I had a great childhood growing up in Austin but always saw the need among kids in the community who didn’t have as much as I did,” Barrett explained. “When I made the move to San Diego, I saw the need all over and knew from friends and mentors what an incredible job Boys & Girls Clubs do for kids who need opportunity.” What began as a couple afternoons a week volunteering with teens quickly became a much larger commitment. Barret now helps with fundraising and community outreach and serves on the Junior Board. “I feel strongly that the kids at these clubhouses have limitless potential and will be the leaders of the next generation,” he shared. “They need someone to ensure they know how great they are.” Professionally, Barrett has served as a realtor for Pacific Sotheby’s International Realty for the last year. Although he had careers in starting companies and other industries, Barrett acknowledged that he always wanted to be a realtor. He also enjoys spending time with family, playing golf and racquetball, and traveling. His newest hobby is pyrotechnics. “Since I was a small child I’ve been fascinated with fireworks and last year began the process of becoming a licensed pyrotechnician in the State of California,” he said. Barrett’s commitment to “service above self” is inspired and supported by those around him. “Everything I have been able to accomplish in the last year has been thanks to an indescribable amount of love and support from the wonderful people of this community,” Barrett acknowledged. “I’d encourage anyone searching to make an impact and see positive change to reach out and get involved in this community,” he recommended. “Your volunteering is wanted and needed to help change lives around you.” 

n an age with anonymous box stores around every corner, entrepreneur Rachel JusticeCrowder has opened the unique, customer-centered Cameo Dress Boutique, providing social event needs with a goal of helping everyone be their best possible selves. In a business which is overpopulated with ‘lifestyle’and ‘casual’-focused shopping, Cameo Dress Boutique solely focuses on dressy fashions and accessories for the events of a lady’s life, starting with the littlest lady. With ready-to wear, off-the-rack styles in social occasion dresses, dressy separates, accessories, jewelry,

gifts, and shoes, Cameo aims to establish the company as a pioneer in this ‘casualobsessed’ industry, building a boutique brand name that will be synonymous with a fashion industry revolution that highlights a wide selection of fun, fashionable, and dressy outfits. Two vital reasons causing the closing of many big department stores – lack of good customer service and no uniqueness – are directly addressed at Cameo. The environment and atmosphere of the store implement a superior customer service system. “Beyond our friendly reception,

Rachel’s 25 years of experience in sales, marketing, and business development, including five years in retail sales and boutique ownership, showed her the way to creating a look that’s different from other boutiques in town. “With the Del Mar Racetrack, event venues, and many public and private schools so close in proximity,â€? Imagination and Adventure LOCAL AUTHOR RELEASES FIFTH CHILDREN’S BOOK

C

armel Valley resident and children’s book author Henry Herz recently released his newest book, Cap’n Rex & His Clever Crew. In Henry’s signature fantasy/science fiction style, the book is a “mash-up” of two unlikely elements: dinosaurs and pirates. Captain Rex and his crew sail the seven seas in search of buried treasure. Whenever they hit an obstacle, the crew members are quick to say they can’t overcome, yet they are somehow always able to come up with a clever solution. The story highlights the values of a child’s creativity and determination in tough situations.

It's official! SKY Facial Plastic Surgery has been named Best Cosmetic Surgeon for the third year in a row! The news was released in Ranch & Coast Magazine's August issue. “We are incredibly grateful our community continues to recognize us as their top choice when it comes to cosmetic surgery for the face," says Dr. Yoo. Double board certified in both facial plastic surgery and head & neck surgery, Dr. Sirius K. Yoo is one of a select number of surgeons in the nation to complete a prestigious fellowship in facial plastic surgery at Stanford University. This unique credential combination coupled with a reputation for natural-looking results are what set Dr. Yoo apart. SKY treatments are customized, combining surgery with fat transfer, Botox and fillers for impressive results that look natural. "After several consults with other doctors in the area, I immediately knew after meeting with Dr. Yoo that he was the doctor I would trust for my surgery. He has taken years off my face without the 'overdone look' you see so often." Trust your face to an expert. Schedule a consultation.

Cap’n Rex & His Clever Crew is Henry’s fifth traditionally published picture book. He is also the author of Monster Goose Nursery Rhymes, When You Give an Imp a Penny, Mabel and the Queen of Dreams, and Little Red Cuttlefish. “I write fantasy and science fiction for kids because it’s fun and challenging at the same time,” he said, “and I think those genres are particularly powerful ways to spark a child’s imagination and plant the seed for a lifelong love of reading.” Henry is a member of the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators and often participates in literature panels at conventions such as San Diego Comic-Con. Cap’n Rex & His Clever Crew is available for purchase at any independent bookstore or on Amazon. FAC E S I N T H E C R OW D Carmel Valley Resident Tom Turner Concentrates on ‘Empowering People, Transforming Cultures’

PEACE A AND CIVILITY

by KELLEY GUSICH | photo by Zeena Gregg Photography

fter nearly 24 years in Carmel Valley, Tom Turner has combined his occupation and community involvement into a treatise on cooperation and conflict resolution. He is a commercial real estate transactional attorney and managing partner of Procopio, the largest San Diego-based law firm, and he’s currently chairman of the board for the National Conflict Resolution Center (NCRC). At Procopio, Tom finds satisfaction in helping his clients resolve problems, avoid disputes, and obtain win-win situations. At the NCRC, the theme is much the same, utilizing a variety of techniques to help people avoid and resolve disputes of all kinds, through mediation and constructive non-confrontational communication. Founded in 1983 by the University of San Diego Law Center and the San Diego Bar Association, the NCRC serves a variety of communities in both the public and private sectors – regionally, nationally, and internationally. It provides the resources, training, and expertise to help people around the world manage conflicts with civility. Tom takes part in a variety of programs, including Avoiding the Pipeline to Prison, the Campaign for Campus Civility, and numerous Restorative Justice programs. “As our tagline says,” he explained, “we are ‘Empowering People and Transforming Cultures.’” When asked what inspired him to work with the NCRC, “Perhaps a little bit of the leftover hippie in me,” Tom smiled. “I found resonance in the effort to build a more peaceful and civil society.” Tom is inspired by Martin Luther King, Jr., John Wooden Willie Mays, and Alex Cory – the founder of his law firm. He feels his fabulous wife Jennifer is the glue that holds the Turner family together. “Both of our daughters married great guys and each has blessed us with a grandson. We feel very fortunate that they live close so we can regularly convene at our Carmel Valley home,” Thomas shared. “Our son is in Chicago, but we do our best to stay close.” As a matter of fact, rather than downsizing after the Turner children left home, they did a major expansion and remodel, “so our Carmel Valley home will remain the family social hub for the long haul.”

What Skills Will Students Need in a Rapidly Changing World?

by DR. BOB OGLE, Head of School, Pacific Ridge School

With the pace of change increasing and technology as its primary driver, our children’s adult lives will look very different than ours do today. Educating young people to be ready for this fluid, unknown future needs to combine proven, traditional methods with new, innovative approaches. The best environments are those in which students learn how to ask the right questions, discuss and design solutions to complex problems, make commitments, take thoughtful risks and grow from both their successes and their failures. Attaining these skills can

be challenging in schools with traditional programs, large class sizes and shrinking resources. Motivated and curious students are pressed to fit growth opportunities into programs that take place outside of school. Often, they need to choose a single interest to pursue out of many they may have. For parents, investing early in an enriched, forward-looking education can pay tremendous dividends for their children’s success and satisfaction in life. At Pacific Ridge School, students in grades 7-12 engage actively with academic subjects while gaining relevant, handson practice in essential skills. Our approach, known as the Student360 Experience, gives students the opportunity to develop skills and explore interests while maintaining balance in their already busy lives. The “Harkness Table,” an oval table at which 15 students sit alongside their teacher, is the

center of academic life at Pacific Ridge. Students share ideas and perspectives, strengthening their speaking, listening, and critical thinking skills. Academic content is frequently integrated across disciplines to add depth and context to learning. In our year-long service learning program, students develop empathy, leadership and project management expertise addressing needs as diverse as ocean pollution, elder care and

girls’ education in India. Our annual global travel program sends over 95% of our students around the world for cultural immersion, service and study. To learn more about how you can prepare your child for the future, I invite you to explore Pacific Ridge School and the Student360 Experience at an Open House, Saturday, November 4, at 1 p.m. To register, visit pacificridge.org.  SPECIAL ADVERTISEMENT

A Look at 92130’s Real Estate Numbers by JESSICA BREAUX

T

he figures are in for August, and the numbers remain quite strong for home sales in 92130. A quick comparison to the same time period last year shows some minor fluctuation, but nothing to “call home” about. A total of 62 new single family home listings hit the market in August, compared to 51 new listings in August 2016 (an increase of 21.6%). Even with more listings hitting the market this year, 92130 experienced a tightening of available inventory. The total number of single family homes for sale was down 32.3% with 84 homes available for purchase in August (versus 124 during the same period last year). The average number of days that homes were on the market during August was 29 days (compared

to 32 days in August 2016). The 9.4% faster selling time is consistent with the drop in inventory supply. 92130 home values are very strong (and continue to be near an all-time high). The median year to date sales price of a 92130 single family home through August was $1,240,800 (an increase of 8.9% compared to last year’s $1,139,500 YTD median price). If you are considering making a move, you should be able to do so with confidence. Give me a call to schedule a meeting. It’s important to work with someone that you trust, and I would love the opportunity to get to know you and discuss your real estate goals. 
