About Last Night

here’s nothing quite like a good party. It is often the end result of a lot of work and preparation. The reward. A gathering of friends, business associates, family, coworkers – many people coming together that share something in common. As I write this issue’s note, I find myself with a little extra hop in my step and a smile on my face. Of course, it doesn’t hurt that today is a Friday – and the end of a long and productive week. But what’s really on my mind is last night’s ZCode Magazines’ epic party! With the launch of our eleventh publication, 08/10 Magazine, covering the North Carlsbad zip codes of 92008 and 92010, we decided to make the official announcement with a grand celebration – ZCode style. And we felt that the iconic Carlsbad Flower Fields was the perfect venue – the Paul Ecke Jr. Family Barn made for a very cool setting. So why was last night’s party so great? Was it the fact that we were blessed to have over 300 guests ranging from local business owners, politicians, and school officials to friends and family members of the ZCode Team? You bet it was! Last night was not only a night to celebrate the launch of 08/10 Magazine, but it was a celebration of community in general. You see, it is my belief that most of the people that live in North San Diego County live here by choice and not necessity. The vast majority of our neighbors are proud to live in their community. In fact, they love living in their community. It is this bond that makes everything work. It is this bond that makes each of the unique communities of North County so special. I am surrounded by an incredible group of people that make up the ZCode Team. Day in and day out they are in the office busting their butts and working hard to create magazines that we hope people want to read. Everyone has a unique part of the puzzle. It was an amazing experience to see our team mingling and socializing with many of the people that have either been featured in one of the ZCode Magazines or people that are loyal readers of the magazines. Having the ability for the team to connect faces with names, laugh and socialize make it all worth it. There are many moving parts to publishing hyper-local community magazines. First and foremost, it takes the vision, determination, and desire to produce a great product. For that, I would like to give a heartfelt “thank you” to the ZCode crew. Of equal importance is the loyalty of the local residents and advertisers – both of which ZCode Magazines would not exist without. We all need to thank them. So last night we celebrated. We celebrated you. We celebrated community. We celebrated family, friends, and coworkers. We celebrated being the best that we all can be. We celebrated an incredible journey that I like to call PASSION. I want to thank you for being a loyal reader. And thanks for supporting ZCode Magazines and supporting the advertisers that are responsible for delivering this magazine to your mailboxes.

T

he Romana parents were born in different provinces in the Philippines. Jerry Romana came to the U.S. when he was 10 years old and Sarah (Escritor) Romana when she was 16. They met through a mutual friend while Sarah completed her BA in Psychology (1992) at San Diego State University. Jerry graduated with a BS in Civil Engineering from UC Irvine (1988). Married for twenty years, the Romanas have three children and embrace Scripps Ranch as home. “When we first came here I noticed the community involvement as a whole,” said Sarah. “People really want to contribute to something.” She adds that it’s also great to be near Mira Mesa for authentic Asian shops and restaurants they crave. They moved in 2008 from Cerritos because they valued the quality of schools and beautiful scenery. Jerry is vice president for CH2M Hill, an international environmental and engineering consulting firm. Sarah is an administrative assistant. Their first child, Lexx, is a junior with excellent grades at Scripps Ranch High. He enjoys playing tennis and guitar,

and he is a member of the youth ministry program at Saint Gregory the Great Catholic Church. Troy is in Gifted And Talented Education (GATE) in 8th grade at Marshall Middle School. He exercises his singing voice in the school’s choir and as a member of Chamber Bravura, an a cappella group of Scripps Ranch students. Troy was with the Chamber when they performed at the Vatican last summer. Little sister Jalene is also a GATE “WE ALWAYS TAKE A student in 5th grade at Dingeman Elementary. She’s a Junior PICTURE TWICE – Girl Scout and loves to flip and ONE NICE AND THE cartwheel with SpiritKids Sports, where she’s learning gymnastics. OTHER GOOFY.” The Romanas enjoy the outdoors and camping, especially summer road trips that inspire the kids to “go with the flow” in Sarah’s words. “We always take a picture twice – one nice and the other goofy,” she added. Favorite memories include rafting on the Colorado River, visiting Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona and Mitchell Caverns Natural Preserve in California’s Mojave Desert, among many destinations. Beyond the hearth of home, they’re giving back. Sarah volunteers at Dingeman Elementary and Marshall Middle School. She’s active in Ministry of Mothers at Saint Gregory the Great and has coordinated their annual Mother’s Day Brunch for the last two years. Jerry volunteered as vice president for Luisiana USA of Southern California, a Filipino charitable organization. As the children gain new experiences on the road and in their communities, Sarah acknowledged “they appreciate it’s a one-of-a-kind thing.” ¢

This past April, ZCode Media held a launch party for the new magazine at the Paul Ecke Jr. Family Barn amidst the picturesque Carlsbad Flower Fields. With the flowers in full bloom and the guests in full smiles, it was a night to remember. The packed house enjoyed delicious food, scrumptious desserts, and hot-ticket raffle items with over $14,000 in prizes. All $1,060 raised from the raffle went to the Ronald McDonald House Charities of San Diego. The night concluded with a few words from our co-owners, ZCode Media Publisher Derrick Breaux and Creative Director Tyler McElhaney, who premiered a riveting video on our newest addition to the ZCode bunch. Symphony for Scripps Ranch THE HISTORY AND HITS OF SYMPHONY IN THE PARK

B

ack in 1985, a crew of devoted music fans in 92131 came together on the grassy knolls of Hoyt Park to form the first Symphony in the Park. While not always accompanied by a symphony, the annual concert series has featured fantastic bands, solo performers, orchestras, carolers and more. Steve Fiorina, one of the chief organizers for Symphony in the Park, stated, “It is always a warm atmosphere; fun is in the air, neighbors enjoying each other and dancing and singing along with some incredible music!” Through the years, Symphony in the Park has featured the Heroes, Dodie Stevens, Siren’s Crush, The Legends, Gary Seiler & The Coast Riders, The Christmas Tree-o, Hotel California, BetaMaxx, Tim Flannery, the Marine Band and many more. Even 92131 musicians have broken onto the scene performing at the concerts, such as Molly Moreau, Isabella Pihas and Almost Grounded (who you may remember from one of our previous issues). Some have wondered how the Symphony in the Park committee finds these performers. According to Steve, Tom Boyd, a drummer for the Heroes, has “a wonderful rapport with other musicians and he know what our crowds like: infectious music and showmanship, and the interactivity with the adoring throngs.” Tom will bring videos to meetings and they will review the candidates together before deciding on the final line-up for the season. Tom added, “We try to keep some of the favorites and try some different bands as well.” But it wouldn’t be a concert without an audience, and while the spectators keep coming,

Symphony in the Park can always use your help. Steve explained that while the sponsors cover a portion of the costs, a majority of the funds go towards the bands, sound system, lighting, porta-potties, permits, and scholarships to local schools. Steve encourages the community to submit donations and keep this Scripps Ranch tradition alive. Symphony in the Park features one concert per month from June to December. ancing is more than a hobby for Haley Andranovich – it’s her passion. “I’ve been dancing since I was five years old and over the years I’ve fallen more and more in love with it,” revealed Haley, a senior at Poway High School and a member of the dance team. Haley is an accomplished dancer and has won numerous awards at local, state and national competitions. She was recently crowned Miss Dance Drill Team California 2014 and compete this month in the Miss Dance Drill Team USA Pageant. “I still get really excited when I look over and see my tiara and sash in the corner of my room. It’s still a bit surreal that I’m Miss Dance Drill Team California 2014,” said Haley. Raul Gomez, to perfect her solo routine and modeling. She and Raul also dedicated time to preparing for the interview portion of the pageant. Haley cites Raul as not only her coach, but also as her biggest dance inspiration. “Raul pushes me to be the very best dancer I can be. He always reminds me to dance from within, and every time I get on stage, that’s what I do,” explained Haley. She is also inspired by her teammates, talented girls she feels blessed to have had the opportunity to dance with over the years. When Haley isn’t dancing, she enjoys spending time with her friends and family. She has a 14-year-old brother, Alex, and a 110-pound dog named Zeus, who according to Haley, is like a second sibling. She and her family live in Stonebridge, a community that Haley feels is quiet and secluded, yet convenient to all her favorite local spots, including Canyon Springs Church, where she is actively involved. When it comes to school, Haley’s favorite subject is math. “I enjoy critical thinking and problem solving and that is what math is all about,” stated Haley. These skills will certainly come in handy for Haley as she pursues her next endeavors which include college, law school and a judgeship. “I would love to be a Supreme Court Justice one day,” related Haley. And although Haley knows she will certainly miss her friends and family as she heads to college in the fall, she is excited to take the next step in making her dreams come true. ¢

The Cornerstones of Love 92131 RESIDENT BUILDS HOME FOR NEEDY FAMILY

J

enna Nastrini has been going on build days for years through Build A Miracle, a local organization devoted to building homes for needy families in Tijuana. But this 92131 resident decided to go further and raise the funds needed to build a home all by herself. “The idea of raising $10,000 on my own was very intimidating, but once I got started I received so much support!” said Jenna. She raised her first $1,000 teaching dance lessons, then she created a short video to show to friends, family, and classes at her high school. Along with a large garage sale and donations from different sources, she ultimately raised $14,000 which was sufficient to not only construct the house, but also furnish the three-bedroom, one-bath home. The recipients of the home were the seven members of the Vasquez family. “They were living in a one-room, make-shift shack with dirt floors and no doors,” Jenna described. “The look of hope on their faces when we finished the home was priceless.” The furnishings were a total surprise for the family, after waiting out the three sessions of construction from September through November. “It was like Extreme Home Makeover, and I was Ty Pennington,” said Jenna. Jenna called it one of the most satisfying and rewarding experiences of her life on many levels, and her successful fundraising model has become a “template for many other young groups and individuals.” And she won’t be stopping there. When asked if she would do it again, Jenna replied with an ecstatic “I would love to! When people join together, anything is possible!” ¢

egg English muffin slice of jalapeño jack cheese quarter-inch slice of Vidalia onion slice cooked bacon, if desired Dash of pepper Butter or cream cheese Sriracha sauce, to taste Basil Pesto Sauce (directions below)

Makes: 1 serving Total Time: 10-15 minutes

Heat skillet to medium and then spray with non-stick cooking spray. Sauté sliced onion until translucent on both sides. Move onion to one side and crack egg onto other side, re-spraying pan if necessary. Cook egg “over-easy” on both sides, as you will want the yolk to remain unbroken. Sprinkle pepper on top of the egg, to taste. While the egg is cooking, toast the English muffin. With a spatula, place onion on top of the egg in skillet. Top the onion with piece of bacon, if desired. Top with a cheese slice, turn heat off and secure lid on skillet so the cheese melts. Spread butter or cream cheese on the toasted English muffin. Carefully transfer egg, onion, bacon, and cheese stack from skillet onto the bottom of the muffin. Spread pesto sauce, to taste, atop the cheese. Add Sriracha sauce atop the pesto, to taste. Close the muffin with the top half and enjoy.

Coarsely chop basil leaves. Combine all ingredients – except salt – into blender. Blend until minimally chunky, but not liquefied (pesto should have some consistency). Add a small amount of kosher salt and blend to taste.

THE SCRIPPS RANCH WOMEN’S CLUB REMAINS STRONG

The

year was 1990, and in the spring of that new decade a group of active women strove to make their Scripps Ranch neighborhood even better. They aimed for charitable, civic, educational, and cultural pursuits, and ultimately came together as the Scripps Ranch Women’s Club. Since the inception, the club has successfully fundraised for local schools, the public library, parks and even created college scholarships for graduating senior girls from Scripps Ranch High School (SRHS). Their website cites a timeless quote from Winston Churchill that sums up the group’s mission to a point: “You earn a living by what you make in life, but you make a life by what you give.” Lynn Parke is the current corresponding secretary for the Hidden Valley House Auxiliary and has been a member of the Scripps Ranch Women’s Club since its founding in 1990. Her volunteer efforts within other organizations are her pride and joy, improving the quality of the community and schools, and that the Women’s Club was “another way to continue that involvement.” Cheryl Dawley, a member of the SRHS Music Boosters and the San Diego Pacific Arts Foundation, commented, “The Women’s Club is the first organization I joined in Scripps Ranch ten years ago. alboa Park came alive on March 1, as participants in the Finish Chelsea’s Run lined up at the starting line to prepare for a 5K run/walk in honor of Chelsea King. The event was hosted by the Chelsea’s Light Foundation, in partnership with Girl Scouts San Diego, who worked together to keep Chelsea’s memory shining bright. Hundreds of participants were in attendance, with some carrying Chelsea’s favorite blossom, the sunflower. ussell Shedd, music teacher at Scripps Ranch High School (SRHS), has been teaching at the high school for eleven years. This year he received a well-deserved recognition for his work in the form of the David Paul Schuchman Memorial Award. “I was selected by my peers in the San Diego Unified District (SDUSD). Every year music teachers in the district nominate who they feel is the best music teacher who gives the most to the district and their students,” said Russell. “I was very surprised when I found out at the SDUSD Honor Band and Orchestra concert.” When asked about his favorite aspect of the music program, Russell shared, “I love my students and they are amazing in so many ways. It’s the relationships that make the job worthwhile. To help a student grow in any way and become a part of that experience is tremendously rewarding. It’s the reason I teach, and I just use music as that vehicle to do so.” Mark Nicholson, Instrumental Music Specialist for SDUSD, explained, “The teacher to whom this award is given should be someone who goes beyond their usual job assignment to increase student participation and opportunities in musical experiences beyond the classroom.” Mark described the criteria to receive such an award required a teacher who shows dedication to the profession, shows great discipline and practices their craft, and who inspires their students to love and continue their craft. With the SRHS music program alive and well amidst budget cuts affecting other schools, Russell Shedd has certainly shown his dedication to the students.

hen Scripps Ranch residents, Alka and Suresh Subramanian learned about the outrageous amount of AIDS-infected children in Zambia, Africa who were not being adequately cared for, they were not only shocked but they were moved to take action. “My husband, a friend and I decided to work in this area and soon we founded the Power of Love Foundation,” stated Alka. That was the year, 2001; and since that time Power of Love (POL) has made extraordinary accomplishments in the global fight against AIDS. With a mission to “turn back the tide of the global AIDS epidemic through innovative community responses that increase the effectiveness of prevention and care efforts,” and a vision of “a world where the AIDS epidemic is in continuous retreat, and people living with HIV have access to loving care and treatment in an environment free of stigma and discrimination,” POL has caught the attention of successful business people who are motivated to get involved. “We have a highly talented volunteer Board who bring their unique expertise to the organization,” explained Alka. “For example, we have business leaders, a professor, a surgeon, an RN, homemakers and people active in the community.”

With the help of these volunteers POL has made such accomplishments as putting in place a highly cost-effective way to care for HIV-positive infants and children in Zambia, teaching mothers of HIV-positive infants to take charge of their lives and become self-reliant through starting businesses, and preventing the spread of mother to child transmission of the HIV virus. “In the last three years, we have had no child born with the HIV virus in our program community,” noted Alka. “The POL approach has been presented in academic and professional meetings as a best-in-class model.” The POL approach has been so successful that it will be expanding to five communities in Africa and 1,000 more HIV-positive infants. “That will require increased funding and community support for a few years,” elaborated Alka. As far as a long-term goal for the organization, Alka replied, “That we are able to scale up our program to all the communities in Zambia, eliminate the infection of infants with HIV during birth, and eventually work ourselves out of a job.” ¢ Interested in getting involved? his past April, a soccer field at the Scripps Ranch Recreation Center was littered with hundreds of eggs. But this wasn’t a prank: it was a pastel party at the Scripps Ranch Rec Center Easter Egg Hunt. Children from all over waited eagerly for the hunt to begin. Once the call was made, they raced across the field as fast as their legs could carry them, armed with baskets, bags, and toy carts in hand. SRHS Student Featured at Mingei Museum

Veera Panova, an art student from Scripps Ranch High School, will have her 3D art piece featured in the Student Craft 2014: Useful Forms exhibit at the Mingei Museum in Balboa Park. The exhibit is the Mingei’s first juried student exhibition inspired by the museum’s name. “Mingei” is Japanese for “art of the people” or handmade objects with a function such as bowls, furniture and clothing. Veera’s piece, titled “Recycled Materials Basket” is constructed from ribbons, plastic bags, t-shirts, yarn and rope. “All of these materials are very common and if used in the right way, beautiful and unique baskets can be created,” Veera shared in her artist statement. 3rd Annual Kickin’ It Challenge

The 3rd Annual Kickin’ It Challenge, a two-day soccer tournament to help fight the battle against breast cancer, is now open for registration and closes on May 19. Scripps Ranch Girl Scout Cadette Cate Chiang of Troop 3630 made Girl Scouts San Diego’s list of top cookie sellers. She is among thirty-one girls in the San Diego-Imperial region who sold over 2,014 boxes in 2014, collectively reaching 71,935 boxes. As a bonus, Cate earned a free trip to a Girl Scout summer camp. Registration is now underway for all 159 camps, with themes ranging from archery to zoology. Overnight or “resident” sessions take place at Camp Winacka and Camp Whispering Oaks in Julian; day camps are located countywide. All girls are welcome, whether or not they are Girl Scouts. Good Deed Paves the Way

Evan Caplinger, a longtime 92131 resident and previous Marshall Middle School student, knew for his Eagle Scout project that he wanted to give back to the community. In response, he decided to pave an area of the middle school where he once treaded himself. “Since the school administration wanted that area paved, I was all too happy to oblige,” said Evan. He executed the project with prestige, going from “inexperienced builder” to a successful project leader. For the new path, he smoothed out the ground underfoot, covered it with sand, then layed down and cut each individual tile with care. Congratulations to Evan on receiving the highest honor of Eagle Scout rank for his good deed.

Food trucks, beer and wine gardens, a Kids’ Zone, and the return of “Green Street” all add to the exciting environment that the Scripps Ranch Civic Association (SRCA) has created for families and friends to enjoy on May 18. A Message from Jan McGinn, SRCA Community Fair Chair You’re Invited to the 15th Annual Scripps Ranch Community Fair! Come and enjoy an entertaining day at the Fair as we celebrate what makes Scripps Ranch the wonderful neighborhood in which we live – parks, hiking trails, schools, youth activities, community/service groups, talented performers, and local businesses. As the second largest event in our community (after the 4th of July Parade and Festivities), the Fair brings residents together for a fun-filled, family event conveniently located at the Scripps Ranch Community Park. While you wander through the booths of community groups, businesses and vendors showcasing their services, products and crafts, you’ll discover valuable information, the perfect gift, an item that’s just right for you, or a new service provider. Admission is free and proceeds help fund the valuable community services provided by the nonprofit SRCA. This year we have two special performers – The Opera Singing Chef and Richard Lederer (children’s author). Chef Elizabeth will delight you with her unique style of music and cooking demonstration. Math Mania Mathnasium of Poway Helps Kids Make Sense Out of Math

A

ccording to Mike Mulvey, owner and director of Mathnasium of Poway, math doesn’t have to be scary or frustrating for students; it can be fun and most of all, make sense! “The atmosphere in our center is positive and affirming. We work to reduce math stress and show students that they can succeed,” said Mulvey. Mathnasium focuses on math fundamentals, number sense and an understanding of math concepts at all levels, while helping students catch up, keep up and get ahead. Mathnasium instructors are typically math majors who have also passed a comprehensive math literacy test and have undergone Mathnasium training. They are also vetted for empathetic personalities and the ability to work with younger students. “We offer a low instructor-to-student ratio — 1:3 on average — individualized learning plans and a high level of interaction between instructors and students that allows for the adaptation of the learning plan as needed,” explained Mulvey. He and his staff work together with students, parents and teachers to help students improve their math skills and build their confidence

within the subject. For students that are already doing well in math, Mathnasium instructors challenge them and find ways to keep them excited and engaged. Mathnasium instructors also help students prepare for tests, whether the tests are “regular” classroom exams or college entry requirements, such as the SAT or ACT. The Mathnasium method of providing personalized instruction and a customized learning plan for each and every student has

been helping children for over thirty years. There are more than 400 Mathnasium locations across the county, with the Poway location opening six months ago. As stated by Mulvey, in this short time, Mathnasium of Poway has already helped many students improve their math skills. “The best part of Mathnasium is seeing students succeed, seeing their improved grades and test scores and helping them demystify math. I love showing students that math is not an insurmountable obstacle, but something that can be broken down into smaller and easier to manage pieces that all come together,” revealed Mulvey. FOUNDER Leslie Cohen Started Up the Scripps Ranch Zen Meditation Group by LINDA FRABL | photos by Spark Photography

L

eslie Cohen, a Scripps Ranch mother of two children, founded the Scripps Ranch Zen Meditation Group. Describing the beauty of her community in a very Zen-like manner, Leslie proclaimed, “I enjoy the Scripps Ranch scenery from wherever I am: sitting in my backyard while looking at the lovely trees and watching for hawks in the open space, or enjoying a sunset view while walking the dog, or even driving through the neighborhood.” Leslie has always loved aikido martial arts, but when she first tried zasen (seated meditation) about twenty-five years ago, she realized, “I didn't ‘get it.’” Several years later she attempted it again, successfully, with her current sensei at the San Diego Aikikai in Normal Heights. Leslie now volunteers at Aikikai by teaching a few weekly classes. She also attended a Rohatsu sesshin (an eight-day intensive meditation retreat) in the state of Washington, and she exclaimed, “It was such a powerful and fulfilling experience, I could not imagine ever dropping the practice from my life. It truly cemented my commitment.” Eager to find like-minded individuals here in Scripps Ranch, Leslie started up the local meditation group, which meets every Sunday from 8 to 9:15 a.m. at the Jing Institute of Chinese Martial Arts and Culture (located at 9865 Businesspark Ave. Suite D in Scripps Ranch). Leslie stated, “It is a challenge to make time to meditate at home, so sitting together in the same space, at our set time and day, makes it much easier to follow the practice. I’m always happy when new folks find us and join in!” When she isn’t meditating, Leslie volunteers for enrichment programs at her children’s school, Jerabek Elementary. She oversees the Character Counts (a.k.a. Second Step) empathy-building role-playing lessons for her daughter’s second grade class. Leslie revealed, “My daughter’s teacher said that the kids have already used some of the techniques to resolve conflict in the classroom!” Leslie also teaches Art Corps lessons in both of her children’s classes, and added, “The students always surprise me with their unique creations, so it’s a pleasure to be part of the process.” Artistic in a musical way as well, Leslie used to play drums in both an African band and as an accompaniment for African dance classes. She admitted, “That is something I miss doing. Maybe one day I’ll set up an African drum class in Scripps Ranch.” If anyone can do it, Leslie can! ¢

iramar Ranch Elementary’s 4th Annual Hawk Classic Golf Tournament was a spectacular success according to Robert Hasson, Golf Gala Coordinator for the event. “The golf tournament had close to 100 golfers who were able to sample beer from Helm’s and Legacy Breweries while eating food from Sombrero’s and Chik-Fil-A.” The golf tournament was followed by the annual Spring Social with 200 attendees. The evening gala included a fun photo booth, taking chances at the casino games, and dancing the night away to the mixes of DJ Mike Dellisant. All money raised went directly back to Miramar Ranch Elementary. Robert added, “My favorite part of the event – that’s easy. Seeing all of the committee’s hard work pay off by watching all of the attendees having a good time and enjoying themselves all for a worthy cause.” ¢

On

June 28, hundreds of participants will walk in the Relay For Life of Scripps Ranch at Scripps Ranch Community Park. The relay will take place around the clock in support of the American Cancer Society, and teams from all over 92131 will join the community in marking this milestone in the fight against cancer. The relay begins at 9 a.m., with each team already camped out at Scripps Ranch Community Park. Team members will take a turn walking around a track or path, trading off with other team members for twenty-four hours from the start of the Relay. One of the largest teams on the roster is “Relaying To Infinity & Beyond,” with fourteen members and growing. Team Captain Michaela Iglesia is a senior at Scripps Ranch High School and has been a participant since the first Relay in 2012. During the Relay, the walkers will be entertained by inspirational speakers, performances, games and contests. While team members are making laps, the park will feature boot camp, Zumba, yoga, Pilates, tai chi, and a kids camp. In the evening, a luminaria ceremony will be held to remember those who have lost the fight against cancer. Prima Bernabe, Event Chair for the Relay For Life of Scripps Ranch, said, “Each year, more people are introduced to Relay For Life and join the fight. The passion and enthusiasm among the Relayers is contagious, and is a force that can unite our community to make a change. I love and am recharged by the new faces each year.”

trawberry season is here! This beloved red fruit is a favorite among San Diegans, served on plates and in recipes new and old. But for every recipe, you’ll want fresh strawberries to serve, and it doesn’t get much “fresher” than handpicked strawberries straight from the field. This season, grab your friends and family and head to one of San Diego’s strawberry farms, where you can pick as many berries as your strawberry heart desires. Driving north on the I-5, it’s hard to miss the vast strawberry field nestled in the hills of Carlsbad off Cannon Rd. This is home to The Carlsbad Strawberry Company, who invite groups as small as a couple to as large as school groups and organizations to come pick strawberries for themselves. Venture into the field with your friends and family for a lovely summer getaway. With groups of fifteen or more, they recommend you call ahead at 760-603-9608 for more information. Living in Limbo By

the time you read this, I will know where I’m going to college. But for right now, I’m still waiting. I try not to think about it too much, but all the waiting adds something to the daily routine. When the mail comes each day, I grab the papers and hurriedly flip through them. My heart pounding, I’m looking for the fabled big envelope and dreading the possibility of getting the equally fabled small envelope. I dash upstairs to go online, hoping to see an e-mail from some college saying, “Your decision is ready!” It seems like everything takes longer to load when you’re waiting on something.

More often than not, I get nothing. And so the waiting continues. With each passing day that I’m left with uncertainty, I begin to wonder if the colleges have forgotten about me. I just want to know. There’s the added stress of knowing that once I hear back from the various colleges, I’ll have just four weeks to plan any last college visits, investigate financial aid, and – ultimately – decide where I want to spend the next four years of my life. Well-meaning friends and relatives know I’m a senior and have just one question on their minds: “Do you know where you’re going to college?” I have to give the same tired answer: “No.”

But at the same time, I’m looking forward to the certainty of having a future plan, of being able to answer everyone’s burning question, and of being (hopefully) admitted to a college I will love. As I write this, the drizzle is slowly wafting down through the March gloom. I can’t help but think that the rays of sunlight I’m waiting for are like the letters I’m waiting for. It may be gloomy now, but the light of knowledge – when it comes – will be that much more beautiful. ¢ Jake Todd is a senior at Scripps Ranch High School. cripps Ranch has made the leap into the pageant world at the Miss and Miss Teen San Diego Northeastern Cities Pageant. Scripps Ranch combined with Mira Mesa to unite two pageants under one roof, and featured several contestants from all over the two areas. The Miss Scripps Ranch winner was Allie Kennedy, and Miss Teen Scripps Ranch was bestowed to Sarina Jassy (who you may remember as one of our previous Student Stars). Both girls are ecstatic about their new titles and ready to devote their time to various causes and duties that come with the crown. Sarina said, “I’ve already been involved in several community service events and upcoming planned events.” Allie reciprocated, “I will be the Miss Ambassador for my community. . . attending other community parades, pageants and events I get invited to.” For both girls, these include Scripps Ranch Civic Association meetings, the Farmer’s

Market, Filipino Sun Festival, Scripps Ranch Clean-Up, Ronald McDonald Red Shoe Day and more. With a combined pageant, both girls cited that they made new lifelong friendships across the neighborhoods, especially after spending weeks together in preparation for the pageant. (Contestants were given information about nutrition, make-up, jewelry, walking, public speaking and skin care). “We also learned our opening number and even rehearsed how to stand, which really helps with poise and confidence,” said Sarina. Miss Mira Mesa 2014 is Brittney Charlot, and Haley Hernandez won the title of Miss Teen Mira Mesa 2014. Real Estate Matters Worth the Effort by SCOTT VOAK

T

he real estate market is a mixed market right now. It’s not just the difference between the high end and the rest of the market, but we’re seeing homes of similar value achieve very different results when listed for sale. I took a look at activity in our area over the last ninety days and I focused on homes between $500K and $1M, largely because once you get over $1M market times are longer in general. Looking at that market (data from SANDICOR MLS as of 4/9/14) in 92127, the homes currently in escrow were on the market an average of twenty-three days while the unsold homes have been on an average of forty-nine days. The interesting thing? It wasn’t price that made the difference. The difference was marketing. I looked at all the homes that had been listed for at least thirty days and what I found was a lack of effort by the sellers and agents. Only 25% of the unsold homes used professional photography. As a seller, if you are listing a home anywhere in San Diego you should demand professional photography. It will cost your agent about $500. Yes, houses sell without it, but they take longer and they sell for less because you don’t get the same amount of traffic through a home when it looks bad online. As a seller, insist on it. An agent who doesn’t provide that service free of charge to you is underselling your home. Another major issue I found is a poor presentation of the home. This falls mostly on the home owner, but sometimes the agent contributes due to fear of losing the listing if they are honest with the seller. This relates to fixing up the home and staging it with new furniture. While the topic could fill several pages of this magazine, here are a couple of easy guidelines:

If it has been three years since you painted the inside of your home, paint it again; if your carpet is more than five years old, replace it; if you have throw rugs on top of hardwood floors, put them in the garage while you sell; no, fifteen-year-old furniture does not give a room “character”, and yes, your yard needs work. These steps are the equivalent of washing your car before you sell it. It will earn you three to five times the cost (some of which your agent will cover), and it is definitely worth the effort. ¢

The Survivors’ Memorial Fun was established in 1991 by the California Narco c Officer’s Associa on (CNOA). It was designed to provide immediate financial assistance to the families of all California law enforcement officers who paid the ul mate price by losing their lives in the line of duty. Since its incep on, the Fund has assisted more than 180 families in their me of need. Without the success of this annual event, the Survivors’ Memorial Fund would not be able to con nue providing the level of financial support to the families of our fallen officers that we are commi ed to provide. All proceeds from the tournament will go to the Survivors’ Memorial Fund. The Fallen Officers’ Golf Tournament Commi ee is dedicated to presen ng a memorable and exci ng day of golf for you, while raising the necessary funds for the Survivors’ Memorial Fund.
