ow that our holiday decorations are down and we are charging into 2019, I thought I’d take a moment to look back at the recent holiday season. Somewhere along the way, I got the reputation in my family as being somewhat of a bah humbug during the holidays. My wife and children are quick to point out my lack of interest in holiday decorating and gift wrapping. But the reality is that I absolutely love the holidays – especially Thanksgiving and Christmas. And even though I may act like hunting for that perfect tree does not interest me, it’s just an act (but I think my family may be on to me since I really love everything about it). So, I’ll have to continue complaining a little in order to keep up the façade. The fact is that I love the tradition that the holidays bring. I love the buildup, the preparation, and the anticipation of the upcoming holidays. Life can bring a lot of changes, but one thing that has been important to my wife and me is continuing the family tradition. And having everyone together warms our hearts. Whether it is Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter, or any of the other holidays that we celebrate, everyone in the family knows where we are going to be and who will be there. They look forward to it, and they expect it. As crazy as it sounds, we know what food will be served and who will prepare each dish (for each holiday). It works this way. It’s our family tradition. And although Southern California winter holidays may entail swimsuits and sunscreen instead of bulky coats, I wouldn’t change a thing – nor would they. So, if you hear me whining about decorating the Christmas tree or hanging lights around the house, just know that it’s all part of an act (sort of my own unconventional tradition). But let’s be sure to keep this as our little secret. I don’t want my wife and kids to Derrick Breaux know that I’m really a softy when it comes to the holidays. If Publisher they knew the truth, I’d have to do a lot more decorating and wear one of those silly holiday hats (sorry, that’s not gonna happen!). Now that the holidays have come and gone, I’m truly looking forward to what 2019 has to offer. I didn’t make any specific resolutions this year, but I have large ambitions for 2019. My motto for 2019 is “make it happen.”

t was her sixth grade year when Sabrina Hardisty began honing her skills as an athlete and a musician. Since that time, Sabrina has dedicated countless hours to perfecting both her volleyball game and her cello skills. A senior at Scripps Ranch High School, Sabrina excels on the court, on the stage, and in the classroom. Sabrina began playing competitive club indoor volleyball in sixth grade. Not long after, she also started competitive beach volleyball. “I love the intricacies of the game,” Sabrina shared. “The idea itself is simple: keep the ball off the floor. But there is such precision that each girl in her given position must master.” Sabrina’s growing mastery is evident in her accomplishments. Among those, she has made the All-CIF team for San Diego, earned Western CIF honorable mention, and MVP of the Scripps Ranch Volleyball Tournament. About the same time Sabrina started playing competitive volleyball, she also started playing the cello. At first, it was by the request of her parents. But soon after, Sabrina signed up for orchestra of her own accord. “The feeling I have when I play the instrument can best be described as euphoria,” she said. “When I hear myself play, whether in a concert hall or my bathroom (the acoustics are really good in there!) I get the same chilling feeling that motivates me to get out my instrument again and keep playing.” Sabrina’s ability to memorize and visualize music is aided by her synesthesia. With this neurological condition, she associates colors with numbers, musical notes, words, letters, and even personalities. “Some pieces I listen to are gorgeous in my mind’s eye because of their color scheme,” she explained. At school, honors physiology tops Sabrina’s list as her favorite class. “Learning about the human body in depth is an eye-opening experience,” she shared, “and continues to inspire me to become a doctor.” Sabrina plans to major in biological engineering and pursue a career in medicine with a specialty in prosthetics. Sabrina’s success as a student, athlete, and musician isn’t without challenges. She embraces risk-taking and failure as essential to the learning process. “I fail often, but never the same thing twice, because I learn immediately. I’ve taught myself many things by taking risks and learning from my mistakes,” Sabrina acknowledged. “I fail almost every day. But I love it. It’s my own personal efficient learning style.” 

A

group of 16 local boys, sophomores at Scripps Ranch High School and Cathedral Catholic High School, have joined forces to create The Playground Project in collaboration with local nonprofit Build A Miracle, which will provide a stateof-the-art playground for hundreds of children in the impoverished neighborhood of El Florida in Tijuana, Mexico. The students – including Cole Ashburn, Nick Burns, Connor Colletto, Stefan Cotton, Ethan Dunchack, Liam Doheny, Parker Langenberg, Grady Pond, Grant Glasgow, John Merkin, Jake Nastrini, Johnny Tadeusiak, Colman Smith, Dru Gupta, Jacob Pettit, and Eric Virissimo – are in the early fundraising stages of the project,

with an ultimate goal of $55,000 for the materials and professional labor. Grassroots fundraising efforts so far include garage sales, restaurant fundraisers, hosting a dodgeball tournament, doing presentations for their classmates, donations from family and friends, and more. The boys will also make several trips to Mexico to prepare the lot, interact with local kids, and perform much of the manual labor. Build A Miracle is a Scripps Ranch-based nonprofit organization that has built over 320 houses, three community centers, and an accredited adult education school for needy families in Mexico since 1999. COMMUNITY STUFF

Scripps Ranch Lacrosse

The Scripps Ranch Lacrosse Association (SRLA) wrapped up the off season by partnering with San Diego’s new professional lacrosse team, the San Diego Seals, this December. Along with SRLA coaches, the Seals’ Austin Staats and Connor Kelly provided lacrosse instruction to every boy at Marshall Middle School during their P.E. period. The Seals also gave every student a free ticket to their inaugural season opening game in January. SRLA is now gearing up for the spring season, with registration for boys in first through eighth grade and girls in second through eighth grade open through Jan. 15. The season runs from February through May. There are no tryouts and no experience is necessary. For more information contact Carl (boys program) at cstepnowsky@ucsd.edu or Greg (girls program) at galioto@laxware.net or visit www.srlax.org.

VOC Foundation’s 10th World Symposium

12th Annual SRFSC Golf Tournament

Scripps Ranch Fire Safe Council’s (SRFSC) 12th Annual “Play to Protect” Golf Tournament was held at The Vineyard at Escondido, drawing 24 players to enjoy a day of golf, lunch, an opportunity drawing, and a live auction hosted by Sunny 98.1 radio host and Scripps Ranch resident Dave Mason. San Diego Fire-Rescue Department Fire Chief Colin Stowell, Deputy Fire Chief John Wood, Captain Tim Robles, and Lieutenant John Sandmeyer were in attendance as well. The tournament raised $2,100, which will go towards buying equipment to be placed in storage boxes in 10 locations along the fire evacuation route in Scripps Ranch. First responders will have access to the boxes in the event of an emergency, which include traffic cones, flares, barricades, traffic signs, and vests. For more information visit www.srfiresafe.org.

San Diego Museum Month San Diego Museum Council’s Museum Month returns this February, with half-price admission to more than 40 local museums. Discount passes are available at San Diego County Libraries and San Diego Public Libraries, including 92131’s Scripps Ranch Library. The free passes can be used at multiple museums throughout the month of February. Participating museums include Birch Aquarium, California Surf Museum, Fleet Science Center, Museum of Making Music, San Diego Air & Space Museum, San Diego Botanic Garden, and many more. San Diego Museum Council began nearly 100 years ago and now represents 4,000 museum employees, 6,000 volunteers, and six million annual visitors. Learn more at www.sandiegomuseumcouncil.org

Philanthropic Chicks of Scripps Ranch

The Vision of Children (VOC) Foundation, founded by Fairbanks Ranch residents Sam and Vivian Hardage, recently hosted its 10th World Symposium, bringing together scientists, doctors, and families from throughout the U.S., England, Germany, and Spain to present and discuss the latest vision research findings. The foundation has cultivated a reliable network of researchers from various institutions to invite each year, establishing an environment of trust and a spirit of problem solving in the hopes of finding a cure. Families directly impacted by genetic vision disorders were also given the unique opportunity to listen and learn from some of the most advanced minds in vision research, providing them with comfort, hope, and answers. The program also included dinner, entertainment by VOC’s own Vision Hero Joel Gomez, and presentation of the Vision of Children Leadership Award to Phil and Barbara Huffman. Therapeutic Learning Center (formerly Therapeutic Literacy Center) provides individually specialized cognitive therapy and educational services for remediation of learning disabilities and learning challenges. Just one to two years at TLC prepares students to reintegrate into traditional school classrooms. Individual services are designed to erase not just all kinds of learning problems but all kinds of learning disabilities too so that students can move forward in any learning environment in their future independently confident without need for accommodations.

P

arents with children that are struggling in school may want to consider the Therapeutic Learning Center (TLC) as a short-term investment. Since its inception in 2012, TLC has a mission to FIX learning challenges and disabilities so that students can thrive in any classroom environment with confidence and joy in learning. The program was originally called Therapeutic Literacy Center, but has recently changed its name to better represent the breadth and scope of learning skills TLC focuses on. Located in Solana Beach, TLC’s clinicians provide cognitive therapies for children and adults along with a private school option with academic classes for students in 1st through 12th grades. “We provide individual educational services with specialized cognitive therapy meant to FIX or erase of all kinds of learning difficulties and identified disabilities. After a relatively short period of time at TLC, students transition back to their traditional schools as successful and independent learners,” said school principal Maria Bagby. Individual services are designed to FIX their learning problems, so that students can independently move forward on an even playing field without the need for accommodations and extra support. “These kids are smart, but struggling. They don’t need us to ‘teach to their strengths’ as we’ve all been told. They need us to strengthen their weaknesses so that learning comes easily in any environment,” Maria explained. Maria herself is a reading specialist and works closely with a network of professionals including educational psychologists, audiologists, MFTs,

“TLC OPENED DOORS OF POSSIBILITIES FOR MY CHILD’S FUTURE... IN SCHOOL AND IN LIFE!” – Mother of a TLC student psychologists, and occupational therapists. The team is dedicated to identifying and fixing the CAUSE of problems rather than focusing on symptoms that come along with frustration and difficulties in attention, motivation, and organization. Some of these symptoms come with labels such as ADHD, Dyslexia, Auditory Processing Disorder (APD), Nonspecific Learning Disabilities, Other Health Impairments, and more. Others have no label at all. TLC is ideal for kids who are struggling in a typical school environment. The school focuses

on the science of neuroplasticity. Neuroplasticity is the brain’s ability to change both its physical structure and its functional organization in response to training and experience. For many students, TLC clinicians combine proven cognitive therapies with the Arrowsmith Program. The unique hybrid method of combining cognitive therapies with the Arrowsmith Program accelerates changes in learning success. “We don’t expect our students to stay with us more than one to two years before they are ready to reintegrate into mainstream classes with new levels of success, academically and socially. This is a short-term investment in the life of a child with permanent changes in learning skills.” In addition to their private school option, TLC offers services before, during, and after school for families that choose therapy while remaining in their current school of choice. With their new name in the new year, TLC has redesigned its financial structure with a reduced cost to families. “We have no contracts, lower hourly services, and increased student services,” Maria related. “We are listening to the parents – we are making it easier for them to give their children what they need.” 

athedral Catholic High School’s (CCHS) core values of faith, knowledge, character, and responsibility have guided the development of high-achieving, well-rounded leaders for over 60 years. The CCHS legacy has deep roots, though the name is only 13 years old. Cathedral Girls High School merged with University San Diego High School (UNI) in 1970 on UNI’s Linda Vista Campus. UNI transitioned to the current CCHS Campus in Carmel Valley in 2005 and took on the new name of Cathedral Catholic High School. “No matter what campus you were on, once you become a Don, you’re always a Don,” said CCHS President Mr. Stevan Laaperi. “The Dons’ legacy has never been stronger. Over 50 alumni are among the CCHS team of administrators, faculty, coaches, and staff.” The professional staff is well qualified

The school is accredited by the Western Catholic Educational Association and the Western Association of Schools and Colleges, and holds membership with the College Board. “In partnership with parents, we form an educational ministry that is mutually supportive and a community committed to excellence,” said Principal Dr. Kevin Calkins. “It is our intent that our graduates carry a spirit of intellectual curiosity and a love of learning on their continuing GRADES: 9-12, Co-Ed journey of personal ENROLLMENT: 1,650 and spiritual growth.” STUDENT/TEACHER: 18:1 Over 1,600 TUITION: $17,900 students are currently ABOUT THE SCHOOL: beginning that journey Cathedral Catholic High on the dynamic CCHS School is an innovative campus. f you have a middle or high school-aged child who wants to go beyond the regimented educational system and is seeking greater connection with teachers, with peers, and with the whole learning experience, do not despair. The Grauer School in Encinitas, which happens to be the longest-serving independent school in San Diego’s North County, is a solution. Its stated philosophy reads as such: “More than just a curriculum, real teaching is the deepening relationship between teacher and student.” Established in 1991, Grauer claims to be the worldwide leader in the “small schools movement.” The school’s founder, Dr. Stuart Grauer, noted, “We have traveled far and wide studying the world’s most inspirational schools, educators, and educational movements: Montessori, Waldorf, Reggio Emilia, Socratic, free and democratic schooling, expeditionary learning and classical education, from oneroom schoolhouses to Peking University. We support all these great movements and traditions which have provided us with heroes, mentors, and wisdom.” Grauer Principal Dana Abplanalp-Diggs added, “The Grauer School uses the foundations of these great

traditions to infuse all that we keep learning and synthesizing. With the freedom to make choices in their education, our students are discovering their passions and becoming courageous, curious leaders.

“AT GRAUER, NO STUDENT GOES UNNOTICED – ALL ARE PROUD OF THEMSELVES, ALL ARE ENCOURAGED AND REWARDED IN FINDING THEIR VOICE AND THEIR PLACE IN THE WORLD. THEY’RE ADVENTURESOME. THEY’RE HAPPY!” ~ Julie D., 11th Grade Parent

And even though our focus is not on rankings and test scores, our students are getting accepted to and are succeeding at their top choice colleges.”

Engaging students in six core values – resourcefulness, intellectual curiosity, perseverance, compassion, selfadvocacy, and accountability – The Grauer School aims to develop well-rounded students who are purposeful, confident global citizens. The learning curriculum involves field trips, guest speakers, community service activities, and studentcreated programs, all of which serve to complement the required subject matters and stimulate young minds. Grauer is also the region’s only UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) affiliate school, with 176 partner schools around the world, all while gaining unbeatable college placement: 96% of top three college picks and averaging $50-60,000 in merit scholarship offers for graduating seniors. Emphasizing the concept of students taking ownership over their learning, Dana exclaimed, “In a world that often seems to put ‘standards’ before personal development, and to put institutional needs above human needs, Grauer keeps the focus on the individual student. Our students achieve and are valued because they are developing personal passions, and teens coming of age are finding their unique voices at Grauer.” 

lifelong journey of learning and inspiration begins at The Village Church Preschool (VCP). Children ages two to five can play, learn, and grow through the school’s focus on developing the whole child. “That includes each stage of development – social, spiritual, cognitive, emotional, and gross motor, which provides for kindergarten readiness,” explained VCP Director Pamela Miller. “Our philosophy is Developmentally Appropriate Practice, which means we provide experiences and activities that are appropriate for each stage of development.” Teachers get to know each child as an individual, developing unique curriculum to engage and inspire each child’s interests. STEAM disciplines – science, technology, engineering, arts, and math – feature prominently in the curriculum. VCP’s rich history speaks to a legacy of support and achievement. The school was founded in 1962 by young moms at the Village Church seeking the perfect place for their children to learn and play – today, some of the earliest students are now sending their own students to VCP. The highly educated teaching staff is part of that legacy as well. “VCP is such an amazing place to teach that teachers stay for many years!” Director Miller shared. “The average length of employment for our teachers is 20-plus years; we have very low turnover.” VCP knows it takes a village to raise a child, and teachers build meaningful relationships with the entire family. Supportive, respectful relationships between children and their peers, teachers, and families are vital for healthy development. “We view parents as participants in their child’s educational life and welcome you into our classroom as an intricate part of our community of learners,” Director Miller said. Hard at Work for Finals

A

s Scripps Ranch students come back from break and get settled, they pick up right where they left off and begin to get ready for finals. Scripps finals are the last week of January, leaving only two weeks after break to study. Finals are a stressful time for students and many spend countless hours in study groups, at the library, or in tutoring to prepare. This is the first finals session for freshmen at Scripps and many are not sure what to expect. Peter Madok, a freshman, stated, “This is my first year in high school and I’m nervous for finals. There are so many different classes and materials I need to study, but I will look up to my older sister (a junior) for tips and tricks.” Sophomores, who already have one year’s experience in taking finals, are ready to get another semester behind them. One sophomore, Nyssa SaisMontoya, explained, “I remember finals last year and they were tough. I hope to learn from them and do well this semester, especially in AP Bio.” Upperclassman, on the other hand, have a better idea of what

to expect. “Junior year is supposed to be the hardest, and the classes I’m taking are definitely harder than ones from previous years, but I’m used to the finals schedule and I believe I’ll do well as long as I study hard,” remarked Caroline Jager-Anderson. Lastly, seniors are getting one step closer to graduation by taking and completing first semester finals. With one semester down, and only one left, many are beginning to feel a little senioritis and some sadness to their high school years coming to an end. One senior, Kyla de Vera, said, “I’m overwhelmed with finals coming so close, but it also motivates me to work hard and get to the end of the year.” So as finals approach, students are hard at work at Scripps Ranch High School, determined to get good grades. 
