Welcome to the ‘20s
I
t’s easy to get excited for a new year. Resolutions are made. People dream of what the new year holds. But a new decade is an entirely different beast. Welcome to the ‘20s! I can only imagine what this new decade will bring. The ‘20s will be the third decade of my adult life (considering adult life to be post-college). When I look back at everything that has happened over the past couple of decades, I can’t help but get excited for what’s yet to come. Our oldest daughter, Ashley, is scheduled to get her M.B.A. in May. Starting the ‘20s off with a major accomplishment, the coming years will certainly be exciting for her as she enters the first decade of her adult life. Our son, Peyton, and youngest daughter, Audrey, are in the middle of their high school years. They will experience high school graduation and their college years during the ‘20s – and then some. My wife and I will each hit a major age milestone during the ‘20s – yikes! And it appears, as long as things go as planned, that we are likely to become empty nesters later in the decade. How crazy is that? I hope that the ‘20s will deliver the same type of hectic joy that the last decade has brought. Although I would love for things to simply slow down, I can’t Derrick Breaux help but imagine how we will all look back at the ‘20s once Publisher they have come and gone. And since a new year and decade would not be as fun without resolutions, rest assured that I have a few that I’m working on. You’ll have to stay tuned for the updates. Happy new year (decade) from the Breaux family to yours!
Regards, Derrick Breaux, Publisher

eachers can really be catalysts for students, a fact that hasn’t been lost on Andy Achterkirchen. For 20 years, he’s been volunteering one night per week tutoring students, mostly in math – pre-calculus and calculus – but he’s also been known to work with kids in chemistry and physics. In 1999, he was tutoring at the Malcolm X Library when he learned about the Barrio Logan College Institute (BLCI), an organization breaking the cycle of poverty by preparing underserved students to be the first in their families to go to college. BLCI’s after-school programs begin in third grade and continue through high school. Andy had noticed through his library tutoring that most of his students had the ability to learn the subject matter, but their classroom instruction, for whatever reason, wasn’t enough. He transitioned his volunteer service to BLCI and has been there ever since. “It is very rewarding to see that students whom I have tutored have gone to university, graduated, and are now Name: working as professionals,” Andy shared. Profession: A retired engineer, Andy Hobbies & Interests: worked in Los Angeles designing Favorite Local communication systems for Spots: spacecraft, then continued in San Diego, managing 200 engineers designing aircraft communication systems. Now, in addition to tutoring, he serves on the BLCI Advisory Committee, and is a major contributor to their capital campaign, which will allow the organization to move into a permanent location in 2020 while still remaining in the neighborhood. He also tutors at the UCSD Preuss School and serves on their Academic Advisory Committee, in addition to serving on the boards for Planned Parenthood and a health nonprofit in Tijuana since 2004. He also supports other organizations that help people in need in a variety of ways, including SAY San Diego, Home Start, ACLU, and Project Concern International. “Low levels of education are associated with crime, low civic engagement, and poor health outcomes,” Andy said. “Education is the answer. I encourage others to get involved in our education system either as a tutor or a mentor – whether it is our local schools or nonprofit organizations like BLCI – with your time, talent, or treasure to grant the supports needed to lift all the youth in our communities.” When he is not volunteering his time as a tutor, Andy enjoys traveling (he has been to about 50 countries, including a 15-month stint living in Australia for work) and fitness (he has a rowing machine, stationary bike, and a home gym which he uses daily).

hen she was just eight years old, Miah Nwosu fell in love with ballet by way of gymnastics. “I was taking ballet to improve my gymnastics skills and then I hit a big growth spurt which made it very difficult to get my legs around in flips,” she shared. “I opted to give up gymnastics and dance full time.” Angela Amoroso had arrived from New York City prior to that time, opening the Scripps Performing Arts Academy (SPAA). “I immediately recognized Miah’s tremendous potential and recommended her for a merit scholarship award,” Angela said. “The rest is magical history.” Miah met her most influential teacher while training at the Academy, a former soloist with the Royal Ballet in London. Her influence completely changed Miah’s outlook and approach on everything. Always deeply interested in the mechanics behind movement, Miah studied how the muscles worked and how to make a movement, shape, or position work well for every body. After an injury forced her to realign her professional dance performance dreams, Miah moved back to San Diego from New York and joined the creative team at Scripps Performing Arts Academy. “I loved performing, but I UPCOMING believe I am doing exactly what I was EVENTS meant to be doing and the path that brought me here provides me with a unique 31st Annual performance point of view in approaching training and wholeof The Nutcracker – Dec. 13-15 and 22-23. The Academy inspires each student to recognize and cultivate their own gifts and talents, rather than focus on unnecessary and unhealthy competitive environments found in modern society. “When young people practice ballet to cultivate personal alignment,” Angela shared, “their dreams come to them... every time!” Needing another avenue for dancers to develop their artistic voices, Miah formed the Scripps Ballet Theatre, a youth ballet company (turning 10 this year!). SBT is open to serious ballet students – by audition – ages 14-18 throughout San Diego County. The SPAA and, by extension, SBT has programs and staff that care about the students, not just as dancers or performers, but as whole human beings. “Yes, we strive to create exceptional artists,” Miah affirmed, “but it’s equally important to help them become exceptional people.” SPECIAL ADVERTISEMENT

The Gift of Forgiveness
KATHERINE SCHWARZENEGGER PRATT TO PRESENT AT SAN DIEGO WOMEN’S WEEK photo by Azusa Takano
N
ew York Times best-selling author and animal advocate Katherine Schwarzenegger Pratt will join the roster of speakers at North San Diego Business Chamber’s San Diego Women’s Week Leadership Conference on Friday, March 20. Katherine will discuss her newest book, The Gift of Forgiveness: Inspiring Stories from Those Who Have Overcome the Unforgivable, a collection of interviewstyle stories from those who have learned to let go of resentment and find peace, intertwined with Katherine’s own personal insights. “Forgiveness is a topic that everyone will have to deal with at some point in their lives. None of us can get through life without being faced with the opportunity to forgive,” Katherine said. “My hope with this book is that through reading these compelling stories, people are able to apply some of the findings to their own journey. I hope that it will provide a better understanding of the journey and relationship with forgiveness, and bring a sense of healing.”
“None of us can get through life without being faced with the opportunity to forgive.” Katherine is part of a dynamic line-up of influential leaders and executive women panelists participating in this year’s event. “To me, being a leader means making a difference and helping others,” she said. “That is really what I try to do with all of my books. My hope is that someone reads this book and feels less alone in their journey to forgive and that people realize that forgiveness is a gift we give ourselves more than anything.” San Diego Women’s Week will take place March 16-20, with three events throughout the week. Opening Night will be held on Monday, March 16 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Petco Corporate in Rancho Bernardo, and includes a keynote speaker, panel discussion, book exchange, vendors, appetizers and drinks, and networking. Women and Wine will take place on Wednesday, March 18 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Bernardo Winery, featuring wine and food tasting and unique shopping opportunities. The Leadership Conference will be held on Friday, March 20 from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Town and Country Resort and Convention Center, and includes morning coffee and pastries, keynote speakers, panel discussions, swag bags, vendor village, lunch, and more. Local Schools Named California Distinguished Schools 92131’s Dingeman Elementary and Jerabek Elementary Schools are among 323 elementary schools throughout the state, including 10 in San Diego Unified School District, being honored as part of the 2020 California Distinguished Schools Award Program, sponsored by the California Department of Education. The program recognizes schools based on performance and progress on state indicators including test scores, suspension rates, and conditions and climate. “These outstanding schools don’t just educate students; they also provide the young people of California the tools they need to be successful after graduation,” said State Superintendent Tony Thurmond. “Thanks go to all the staff at these schools – teachers, administrators, classified employees – and parents, who are working together to provide high-quality educational experiences for all of their students.” Distinguished School awardees will be honored in a special awards ceremony at Disneyland Resort in Anaheim in February.
Speech Contest for High School Students Local high school students are invited to participate in American Association of University Women (AAUW) Poway-Peñasquitos branch’s annual speech contest. The local winner will then have their videotaped speech entered into the California-wide semifinal contest. Semifinals winners will then present their speeches at the AAUW California state convention in April 2020, with more cash prizes available. This year’s speech topic is, “Are men and women truly equal today, or are the Suffragettes of 1920 still suffering in 2020?” Speeches must be original content and five to six minutes in length. Adoptable dogs were available at the kick-off event, and donated items throughout the week-long drive included dog and cat food, collars, blankets, cat litter, flea and tick medicine, and leashes. This year’s donations benefited nonprofit organizations Lionel’s Legacy and Second Chance Dog Rescue. Lionel’s Legacy is a senior dog rescue and humane education program for elementary school children. Second Chance is an organization dedicated to saving homeless dogs from local shelters and from Baja California, Mexico. Learn more at www.lionelslegacy.org and www.secondchancedogrescue.org. Assemblymember Maienschein represents the 77th Assembly District, which includes the communities of Scripps Ranch, Poway, Rancho Peñasquitos, Rancho Bernardo, Carmel Valley, Rancho Santa Fe, Fairbanks Ranch, Mira Mesa, Clairemont, Kearny Mesa, Miramar, San Pasqual Valley, and Tierrasanta.
SRHS AFJROTC Breaks Food Drive Record
Cadets from Scripps Ranch High School’s Air Force JROTC program set a record in the 2019 county-wide donation drive for the San Diego Food Bank by collecting 29,848 pounds of canned food, rice, and other non-perishable items. AFJROTC cadets organize and lead SRHS’s food drive each year around the holidays, this year collecting the most donations by the school to date and shattering the 2018 San Diego County record of 22,279 pounds. School staff and students joined forces to gather donations with a friendly competition between class periods with a pizza party for the winning class. The San Diego Food Bank was able to distribute 24,873 meals from the nearly 15 tons of donated food to people in need. The Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank and North County Food Bank feed 350,000 people each month in partnership with 500 nonprofit community partners. Learn more at www.sandiegofoodbank.org.
Troop 616 Eagle Scouts
Two Scripps Ranch Boy Scouts from Troop 616, Nikhil Kalita and Matthew Cederquist, recently earned the Eagle Scout rank. For his project, Nikhil replaced a gardening box at the Miramar Ranch Elementary School (MRE) Gardening Club with a larger, safer, more durable one. With help from Garden Club Chair Eric Morgan, fellow Troop 616 scouts, and friends and family, Nikhil gave the garden area a refresh by cleaning out old sheds and dead plants. The project template and design was given to aspiring Troop 616 Eagle Scouts to continue assisting the MRE Gardening Club. Matthew worked with the City of Poway to design and implement a Land Navigation Course at Garden Road Park. The course has 10 points marked with survey markers, providing a place where community members can learn how to navigate using a GPS or map and a compass. For more information about Troop 616 go to www.t616.org.

Please give us a brief history of the Scripps Ranch Women’s Club. When was it founded and by whom?
Founder Cindy Haberman started the club in 1990. At the time, only the Welcome Wagon group provided a social organization for local women. Cindy wanted to attract women who would do philanthropy work within Scripps Ranch while also enjoying social and educational events. The founding members adopted the slogan “Women United in Community Spirit” that has guided the organization throughout its nearly 30 years. What is the SRWC mission/purpose?
The purpose has always been to encourage community involvement in charitable, civic, cultural, and social interests. In addition, it provides a chance for women to socialize while enjoying mutual interests and to form new friendships in the community. Can you elaborate on some of the community projects the club has supported in the past?
The club’s main fundraising efforts go to college scholarships for Scripps Ranch High School senior women. In addition, the club has regularly given funds to all the elementary schools and middle schools, the library,

Concerts in the Park, and the Scripps Ranch Theatre. Its annual holiday party includes donations to the Hidden Valley House Auxiliary. The club also donated a bench in the club’s name to Jerabek Park. What kinds of social events does the club host? There are monthly bridge games, Bunco groups, a book club, walks at the lake and hikes off the ranch, high tea, tours of various places of interest, happy hours, couples socials, theme parties for members and their guests, wine tasting, pre-theater parties, cooking classes, and many more fun events. Tell us about the SRWC annual scholarship. What should potential applicants know before this year’s deadline? The scholarships are open to graduating female seniors from Scripps Ranch High School. Criteria include being a U.S. citizen and resident of Scripps Ranch, 3.5 or better GPA, and activities at school and in the community. The number given each year varies but in recent years there have been four to five winners per year. Deadline for application is March 30 and the applications can be accessed through our website or through the counseling office at the high school. How did you personally become involved in the SRWC? I became involved in the club by playing bridge and meeting women who raised money for the community.
py
What is your current role within the club? Please elaborate on your specific responsibilities. My current role is president with the responsibility to create an agenda and lead our monthly board meetings. I also write a president’s message for our monthly newsletter.

At-A-Glance Susan Barnett Name: Susan Barnett
Community of Residence: Present resident of Carlsbad but I lived in Scripps Ranch for 24 years Education & Occupation: Master’s in Education; elementary school teacher in SC, FL, and CA, now retired Family: Daughter – Elizabeth; two teenage grandchildren – Wesley and Quinn; Partner – Fred Ford What is the most rewarding aspect of what you do? The most rewarding part of being a SRWC member is that our club gives scholarships to Scripps Ranch High School senior girls who will be attending college. How has the club grown or changed over the years? The club’s mission has remained the same but the way it does fundraising has changed over the years. Initially the club held elaborate fundraising events involving members and their guests which ranged from a brunch/fashion show/silent auction event to theme parties to live auctions. More recently the club provides the funds for distribution in the community through its members’ donations. How many members does the club currently have? The club’s membership rolls have increased in the past several years with 91 current members. Are there any exciting projects, events, or programs coming up? 2020 promises to be another exciting year with many new social events in the planning stages. These include a La Jolla beach walk
followed by lunch, gourmet cooking class with a local chef, wine and food pairing dinner, ladies’ high tea, Balboa Park museum tour, and the ever-popular happy hours. Members often start new special interest groups so there is always that possibility for next year. How would interested community members get involved? What are the criteria for membership? Any woman living in the 92131 zip code is eligible to join. It is simple – just visit the website at srwomensclub.org and download the application, attach a check, and mail it to the P.O. box address. The club enthusiastically encourages and welcomes new members! What can new members expect when joining the SRWC? They can be assured they will be welcomed! And club members always encourage them to take on leadership roles within the organization, participate in social and fundraising events, and provides them with the possibility of forming new friendships. There are activities to appeal to many different interests. And if a member can’t find a special interest group to join, she can start one.

ACHIEVING BALANCE Brain Balance Addresses Challenges with a Drug-Free, Integrative Approach by LIZ ONUFER | photos provided by Brain Balance of San Diego
J
on Pak knew there was a more effective way to help children who struggle academically, socially, or behaviorally – namely, through a coordinated, child-centric effort. As the father of a son with Down Syndrome, an uncle to a child with Asperger’s Syndrome, and a friend to parents with struggling children, Jon paired his personal experience with his passion for helping people and his entrepreneurial roots to open the doors of Brain Balance of San Diego. Brain Balance serves struggling children with an integrative and holistic approach. “We’re bringing a much needed nonmedical solution to a widespread problem affecting families of all walks of life,” Jon said. Through a personalized combination of in-center sessions, at-home activities, and a nutrition program, Brain Balance addresses the individual gaps for each child to improve focus, behavior, social skills, sensory processing, and academics. “The team cares deeply about our students and, as each child is different, we discuss strategies for each one of them to create the biggest impact possible,” Jon acknowledged. Backed by a program developed and continuously improved by research that has been proven successful on over 30,000 children, the Brain Balance team creates individualized
plans to strengthen the child’s weaker areas, including sensory engagement, core muscle strength and coordination, eye tracking, auditory processing, academic guidance, and nutritional guidance. “Gaps and holes in development result in gaps and holes in behavior, academics, socialization, and confidence,” Jon explained. “Our program focuses on improving the foundation of development and brain connectivity rather than masking or coping with symptoms.” Those symptoms can range from lack of focus and meltdowns to lack of confidence and social struggles. Jon and his team work mainly with children from Pre-K to 12th grade with or without a diagnosis and also offer a new program for college-age students. “I’d like to encourage parents to challenge the system,” Jon shared. “A label doesn’t necessarily help the child and medication is only a coping strategy that in the long run doesn’t provide any improvement while oftentimes affects the development of the child.” Since opening their doors earlier this year, Jon and his team are experiencing the results. “Whenever our parents share their stories on how things are better at school, at home, making new friends, doing things they would have never imagined in the past, we get so pumped up that it makes us want to work

mbarking on a new career can be a daunting task, especially when it involves diving into a high-energy, high-profile one such as audio engineering. But switching up careers later in life is something that seemed like a “no-brainer” to several audio enthusiasts after taking part in the Electronic Production Package (EPP) at Studio West. Like their fellow classmates, these students initially enrolled in the EPP program as a fun way to expand their skills in what seemed like an after-work hobby. However, once involved in the program, what started as a hobby soon began looking more like a viable career option. “Oftentimes we see some of the more casual enthusiasts enter the program with the idea that this is for fun or good for a side business. But once they start working with our instructors, getting hands-on engineering experience in a working recording studio, we see a shift in focus. Folks with a regular 9-to5 job they aren’t 100% invested in realize that their passion can be turned into a viable
career,” explained Todd Hunsaker, Director of Admissions for The Recording Arts Center (TRAC) at Studio West. Todd explained further, “When the class is over, the next logical step to launch a career in the industry is to acquire more experience and get the in-depth training that can lead to a successful career in audio engineering. Many find this in our year-long Diploma program.” One student, Isaiah, finished the EPP program last month and immediately enrolled in the Diploma Program. His classes began on Monday, and he couldn’t be more thrilled about his choice. “It was so much fun working a real recording studio. I’m really excited about my decision to start the full program!” Don’t miss out on a new career opportunity in audio engineering – try out The Recording Art Center’s Electronic Production Package now. Classes are enrolling now, so check out the full schedule at www.studiowest.com or call 858-592-9497.

hile many seniors are eagerly awaiting the spring to hear of their acceptance to their chosen colleges, a few have already heard back. Amongst these few are both academics and athletes. These athletes, like other students, work hard to give their all to school while also working hard to give their all on the field, court, or track. Erin Burgess is heading to the East Coast in the fall to play field hockey for Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, CT. “I’m excited to continue playing field hockey. I love the sport and look forward to making new friends and playing on a higher, more competitive level,” Burgess commented. In addition to her field time, Burgess plans on completing
a biology major, along with the pre-physical assistant (PA) requirements, but will miss all of her teammates and the memories left on the Scripps Ranch High field. Ethan Babcock-Barrie will be heading north to Montana State University Billings to play baseball in the fall. “I’m excited to have the college experience and travel around the country to play the best sport with a great group of guys,” he stated. BabcockBarrie also plans on completing a business degree. He will miss all of his friends and teammates, but his favorite part was winning the league championship last year. Kathleen Keomahavong is stepping over to Reno, NV, to attend University of Nevada, Reno to play golf in the fall. “I want

to be a more consistent player and to be able to travel during my first year on the team,” Keomahavong said. “I look forward to competing and playing on different, beautiful golf courses,” she added. Keomahavong plans on pursuing a degree in the chemistry field. These three students exemplify the excellence of the class of 2020, whether that be in the classroom or on the field. I look forward to seeing where my fellow classmates and I end up in the fall, and where our roads will take us: the classroom, field, or world.
