Memories That Last a Lifetime

ost people hold the memories of a few precious life experiences close to their heart. These are the memories that you are excited to tell your close friends and family about. They can be trips that you’ve taken, academic accomplishments, or even sporting events. Regardless of the specifics, these events are often remembered as if they were yesterday. I certainly have a handful of special memories that I am always eager to talk about. My youngest daughter recently experienced something that very few 12-year-old kids get to experience. She and her fellow softball teammates from the 4S Ranch 12U All-Stars went on a 13-game winning streak and became the California State Champions in their division. I still get choked up mentioning that title. It was an amazing thing to watch. Looking back, I realized that I was the exact same age when my Little League team went to the Texas state tournament. Although we didn’t become state champs, 32 years later I still have very fond memories of my experience at the tournament and the journey getting there. In fact, I’ve told the story countless times – just ask my sweet wife who has had to listen to it more times than I care to admit. And that brings me to my point. As these girls made the last out to win the state championship game on that hot and sunny day in Lancaster, the pure joy and emotions that followed were amazing to watch and absorb. There were tears of joy, lots of hugs, and plenty of celebrating that took place on the field. It was at that very moment that the magnitude of my daughter’s life experience became a reality. It was quite an emotional feeling for my wife and me when we realized that our daughter had just experienced a lasting life moment that she will carry with her and talk about for decades to come. I wish there was a way that we could select which life experiences we hold onto and carry with us for the rest of our lives. It would make things so much simpler. However, one thing that I have realized is that these life experiences tend to pick us – and not the other way around. Some people refer to them as a gift, and I definitely agree with that analogy. I would like to extend my heartfelt congratulations to my sweet daughter and her talented teammates. I am very proud to be a part of your journey and life experiences. Your hard work, enthusiasm, and zest for life are a true blessing. Keep doing what you do!

SCRIPPS RANCH STUDENT STAR JOHN JACK DEVELOPS LEADERSHIP SKILLS IN JROTC

by KELLEY GUSICH photo by Alan Smith Photography

B

efore Scripps Ranch High School (SRHS) senior John Jack came to Scripps Ranch, he’d been living in Japan. “My dad is in the Navy,” he explained, “so we have to move every three to four years.” Here, John enjoys the quiet and easygoing atmosphere of the community, in contrast with his love of the competitive atmosphere he finds at SRHS, because it helps him to push himself even further. “I don’t have a favorite subject, but I’m really thankful that the school has such a wide range of courses that are available, as well as excellent teachers who are very passionate about what they do.” This summer, John will be moving to Annapolis, Maryland, to attend the US Naval Academy. The JROTC and its many arenas for leadership development and education have helped prepare John for this exciting journey. John is the Group Commander and the highest ranking JROTC cadet at SRHS, and runs the program along with eight other cadets. “Our unit is very consistent in ranking within the top three units and usually as the top unit in the San Diego Unified School District,” he affirmed. John believes one of the most unique things about JROTC is that it is largely student-run, giving leadership opportunities that can’t be experienced elsewhere. Cadets can also expand their extracurriculars through programs like military drill, physical fitness, cyber security, and academic bowl teams. “The reason I decided to dedicate so much of my time to JROTC and leadership positions in other clubs was because I saw the value that leadership has in all areas of life,” John said. “In everything I do, I seek to learn and grow as a citizen and leader.”

John is inspired not by one specific person or idea, but by the little pieces of goal-setting or knowledge he picks up from others day to day. He enjoys leadership and things that are required of it, like public speaking, and looks forward to using all he’s learning and will learn as a Naval officer to learn about himself and his career goals. The moving around as a result of his father’s Naval career has helped too. “Being able to experience different cultures and communities is something that I believe has contributed to my success and well-roundedness,” John shared. “Although moving so often can be very challenging in the moment, looking back I am very thankful for the experience.”  10 • 92131MAGAZINE.COM • July | August 2018

AUTHOR AND VETERINARIAN DENA MANGIAMELE IS COMMITTED TO HELPING OTHERS LIVE A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE

by JENNIFER FRAKES | photo by Alyssa Rachel Photography

D

ena Mangiamele’s passion in life is helping people and animals live healthy and happy lives. She is a veterinarian, author, and speaker who is dedicated to a vegan lifestyle and assists others who want to join her on a journey to health and wellness. According to Dena, she was drawn to the vegan lifestyle because it is sustainable and involved eating the plant-based foods that she loved. “I realized that I could help other people reach their wellness goals. My book, Dena’s Fuel for Fitness, was created to address all of the challenges I had during my transition to a vegan lifestyle and have it all in one resource for those beginning this journey,” revealed Dena. Prior to writing her book, Dena shared her positive experience with vegan health and wellness through a home-based catering company that filled weekly breakfast and snack orders for fitness enthusiasts at her local health club. Dena began her career in veterinary medicine as the chief veterinarian for the City of Los Angeles Department of Animal Control. There, she cared for animals in the shelter and gained experience working on animal cruelty cases, especially those involving illegal dog fighting. Dena began a consulting business as an expert witness in dog fighting cases, and subsequently, earned a Master’s degree in forensic science. “Although the cases were difficult and painful to work through, it was fulfilling to know I contributed to putting animal abusers in jail and removed dogs from the cruel life they were forced to lead,” stated Dena. Stray: A Shelter Veterinarian’s Reflection on Triumph and Tragedy, her first book and an Amazon best-seller, chronicles her experiences as a veterinarian and forensic expert. According to Dena, for more than 25 years, she provided care for animals as a veterinarian, and now, she is focused on caring for people, especially those who love all animals. An important part of Dena’s commitment to a healthy and active lifestyle is spending time outdoors. She loves the green belts, trails, and eucalyptus trees in Scripps Ranch and takes advantage of the beautiful landscape and year-round temperate weather to take her dogs Jackson and Ruby on four- to five-mile daily walks. “I also enjoy the convenient locations of grocery and health food stores, my health club, the swimming pool at Scripps Ranch Swim & Racquet Club, and being within walking distance of high school sporting events,” related Dena. She and her husband, also a veterinarian, can often be found dining at local vegan restaurants and hosting vegan dinner parties.  16 • 92131MAGAZINE.COM • July | August 2018

JERABEK ELEMENTARY COMMEMORATES ITS HISTORY

tudents, families, faculty, and staff came together for Jerabek Elementary School’s 38th Annual Ranch Roundup in June. The fundraising event featured carnival games, an activities corral including pony rides and a petting zoo, opportunity boxes, cake walk, classroom basket raffle, food, prizes, and a talent show. Ranch Roundup followed a special ceremony celebrating the school’s 40th anniversary. Jerabek students performed music and gave speeches for the crowd, with the ceremony ending in a spirited rendition of Jerabek’s school song. Established in 1978, Jerabek Elementary was named after Chauncy Jerabek, the head gardener at Miramar Ranch Elementary School, where future Jerabek students were learning in temporary classrooms a few blocks

SUMMER IN THE STUDIO E

ach year brings a group of young and talented middle and high school students to Studio West to dive into the world of professional music development and recording. And each summer there are always standout students that blow our minds with the insane amount of talent they bring. One group that really stood out this year was the team that came to us from High Tech High. Similar to our time in the summer camps, this brilliant crowd spent the week learning how original music is written, arranged, and recorded along with a taste of how post production can polish the final product. Our team of Studio West instructors and audio techs guided these students through the gauntlet of sound boards, wires, mics, pre-production, and post-production work, and the results were wonderful. The small groups of students finished the week with fully produced, top-notch cover songs, remarkable original songs, and compositions. Guitarists, pianists, vocalists, drummers, song writers – students contributed to every aspect of the production. The quality of the finished products and the teamwork skills they gained during the process are really something these students can be proud of. It’s this kind of teamwork and creativity that all of us love to see in our student programs, especially our summer camps. We hope that the 2018 summer camps bring this kind of talent and enthusiasm to the studio again this year. 

ORTHODONTIST PROFILE

creating BEAUTIFUL SMILES Gilmore Orthodontics Is Committed to High-Quality Care in a Professional and Welcoming Environment by MICHELLE TREMBLAY | photo by Zeena Gregg Photography

D

r. David S. Gilmore has a long and interesting career background. After serving as a nuclear engineer in the U.S. Navy for 11 years, he decided to make a change and pursue his passion of dentistry. He attended the University of the Pacific, where he earned his Doctorate of Dental Surgery – graduating with high honors. Later, he completed a residency in Orthodontics, earning a second Master of Science degree in Dentistry and was the recipient of the prestigious Fred West Leadership Award. Dr. Gilmore served an additional 12 years as a dentist and orthodontist in the Navy. After retiring from the Navy in 2011, Dr. Gilmore opened Gilmore Orthodontics in Scripps Ranch – a community where he and his wife, Teryn, raised their two children. “Many of my patients live in the same area that I do, so I know and understand the importance of the culture of community in my practice,” explained Dr. Gilmore. “Besides creating great smiles, excellent customer service is our top priority. I treat all patients and their families as I would want my own family members to be treated.” Holding true to this mantra, Gilmore Orthodontics stands out among its competition. “Dr. Gilmore’s personality and caring nature is what patients routinely notice and comment on,” stated Leila Cahill, Scheduling Coordinator. “He spends a great deal of time with families, thoroughly explaining their treatment options in a way that enables them to

AT - A - GLANCE make informed decisions and not feel pressured.” Dr. Gilmore is especially proud of his caring staff. “I couldn’t ask for a better team. All have been brought on board based on their experience and abilities, but most importantly, their people skills and genuine enthusiasm to provide the best possible experience for our patients every time they come in,” explained Dr. Gilmore. “Our goal is simply to make our patients smile.” As a specialist with advanced training, Dr. Gilmore – who is Board-Certified by the American Board of Orthodontics – limits his practice exclusively to orthodontics. “We offer full, comprehensive orthodontics as well as early Phase I treatment using the most advanced traditional braces as well as clear aligners for children and adults alike,” explained Sara Davis, Treatment Coordinator. “We deliver treatment in a state-of-the-art facility using the latest technologies and techniques.” When it comes to choosing an orthodontist, Dr. Gilmore and his team understand that there are many options. “We understand patients’ concerns for the best value, but beyond the treatment fee itself, patients need to be comfortable with the office, the experience they have, and the relationships with the doctor and the staff,” stated Dr. Gilmore. “These intangibles are so important to us as well as to our patients. A patient’s orthodontic experience typically involves several visits over the course of treatment, so we understand that it needs to be a good and comfortable fit.” 

COMMUNITY STUFF

Retired Police Chief Named Grand Marshal The Rotary Club of Poway-Scripps will be hosting the annual Poway Days Parade this year, echoing the theme of Rotary International: Be the Inspiration. “We hope that this theme inspires people to see a world where people unite and take action to create lasting change; across the globe, in our communities, and in ourselves,” said Karen Herreros, the club’s president. Shelley Zimmerman, a Scripps Ranch resident and newly retired police chief, was the first woman to serve as SDPD Chief of Police, and her tenure of 35 years set a service record for sworn female officers. Shelley was named as grand marshal of the parade. Born in Cleveland, Shelley graduated from Ohio State University with a degree in criminal justice. She joined the SDPD in 1982 and was appointed as Chief of Police in 2014. Shelley is also a graduate of the FBI National Academy #241. The parade will be held Sept. 8. with more than 100 guests expected to attend. For more information visit www.powaydaysparade.org.

Scripps Ranch Gets Connected Residents of Scripps Ranch recently enjoyed meeting and greeting their neighbors as well as nearly 30 adult-oriented nonprofit organizations that gathered for the 2nd Annual SRCA Community Meet and Greet. The idea behind the fun and free event at the Scripps Miramar Ranch Library was to provide a onestop shopping experience, where people could easily connect with the many civic, service, and social organizations that operate in the Scripps Ranch area and/or partner with the SRCA to provide services to Scripps Ranch residents. In addition to live music by the Scripps Ranch Blues and Folk Group, the event featured door prizes (provided by the various organizations), delicious food, and libations. To learn more about the Scripps Ranch Civic Association or to find out about upcoming events visit www.scrippsranch.org.

Kendra Couch Classic

Mt. Carmel High School’s (MCHS) Kendra Couch Classic brought together eight baseball teams from local high schools – Torrey Pines, Canyon Crest Academy, Scripps Ranch, Santa Fe Christian, La Jolla Country Day, Bishop’s, and Clairemont – to raise awareness and money for cancer research this past spring. Torrey Pines and Canyon Crest Academy played in the final championship game, with Torrey Pines ultimately emerging as the champions. Since 2012, MCHS has hosted a “Cancer Game” against another local high school for the same purpose, with this year being the first as a tournament. Players from all eight teams wore jerseys with the names of people who have been affected by cancer and, after the tournament, the jerseys and other items were auctioned off. A total of $24,000 was raised this year – almost doubling the amount raised in the first six years. All proceeds were donated to the Moores Cancer Center at UC San Diego Health. Learn more about the tournament at www.kendracouchclassic.com.

Small Business of the Year Rancho Bernardo-based Unicorn Jewelry was recently named the 77th Assembly District’s 2018 Small Business of the Year. “Unicorn Jewelry & Watch Boutique’s success throughout the years serve as an example for many small business entrepreneurs to follow,” said Assemblymember Brian Maienschein. “In its 38 years of doing business in Rancho Bernardo, Unicorn Jewelry has always made it a point to give back to the community.” Unicorn Jewelry, owned by siblings Fred Nasseri and Minoo Anvari and their father, Dr. Said Nasseri, was established in 1981 and has remained an active part of the community. The business is involved in a number of local organizations, including North San Diego Business Chamber, Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater San Diego, Elizabeth Hospice, Soroptimist International, and Kiwanis Clubs. The Unicorn Jewelry team accepted the award from Assemblymember Maienschein at a ceremony in Sacramento.

The Rotary Club of Poway-Scripps recently spent a morning of service clearing trails at the Kumeyaay-Ipai Interpretive Center. The spring cleaning required clippers, pruners, and enthusiastic Rotary members. Club President Alan Noblitt shared, “We were happy to stay longer and accomplish more but we filled the available dumpsters.” The Kumeyaay-Ipai Interpretive Center is a five-acre Native American cultural and historical site. The center was founded by the Friends of the Kumeyaay, San Pasqual Band of Indians, and City of Poway, and it offers docent-guided educational tours, trails to explore, and artifact and photography exhibits at the Education Center. Poway-Scripps Rotary achieves a number of service projects each year, from clearing trails to sponsoring the annual Poway Days Parade. The club meets every Wednesday at 11:30 a.m. at Mainstream Bar & Grill. Learn more at www.friendsofthekumeyaay.org and www.powayscrippsrotary.org.

REALTOR® | BROKER

David J. Suder, Suder Realty Dr. David J. Suder began his career in optometry, and now he’s dedicated to helping sellers and buyers see success in real estate too. He partners with his wife, Darla Suder, to personally handle every transaction and offer full-service brokerage services. They list homes for only one percent, saving clients about $15,000 to $30,000. David’s interest in the field started in the early ‘80s when he was completing his clinical externship in the Los Angeles area. He started attending investment classes and seminars, and eventually purchased his first investment property in 1994. David and Darla have amassed a portfolio of nearly 170 residential rental units. David became a licensed broker in 2006, and also holds broker designation in two other states. Darla was licensed as a sales associate in 2004, and they formed Suder Realty, Inc. in 2007. “We found our experience and expertise could guide and assist people through a fairly stressful and scary ordeal,” said David. “We found it was truly personally fulfilling to be able to do that.” They use their investment expertise to help San Diegans buy and sell homes, offering them the unique opportunity to have a professional real estate investor assist them when negotiating the sale or purchase of a property. David is especially clever and capable at smoothing out the bumps along the way that buyers and sellers need to overcome. David and Darla spend most of their time engaged in managing, selling, acquiring investment properties, and consulting and helping home sellers and buyers. Sellers are advised on exactly what to do to get the highest price. Buyers are advised on what houses to avoid and exactly what they are getting, because David has actively done flips and rehabs himself and can spot problems up front. He even has personally performed most of the construction on many of his projects, and employed and supervised contractors. With this experience, David and Darla can advise sellers how to prepare their homes to get top dollar, and buyers on what to avoid or what they should require to be repaired in the home they are purchasing. David and Darla have been married since 1986, and have two adult children. They currently reside in Scripps Ranch, and have lived in north Poway, Rancho Peñasquitos, and Clairemont.

Cynthia Elizondo

Halcyon Real Estate Services

In 1993, Cynthia Elizondo earned her MBA in International Business. She has used the knowledge she gained to start several successful entrepreneurial endeavors, but her true passion has always lain with real estate. When she was presented the opportunity to follow that dream, she jumped at the chance and never looked back. Cynthia began working with Halcyon Real Estate Services so that she could help others achieve their dreams of buying and selling the first home, investment property, or simply take the next step on their journey in real estate. Although she helps buyers and sellers throughout San Diego County, Cynthia’s expertise especially lies in the residential areas that make up the Poway Unified School District (PUSD). Growing up in Northern California, Cynthia ultimately found her dream home here in North County, where she raised two children who attended PUSD schools for over 15 years. Utilizing her familiarity with the school district and all it has to offer, Cynthia is able to provide her clients with an extensive knowledge of various schools. Ultimately, she can help clients find a home within the boundaries of the school best suited for them and their children. Following her belief that volunteerism makes for a strong community, Cynthia serves as president of the board of directors for the Poway Senior Center, she is the current chair of the Poway Chamber of Commerce, the current president of the Poway Real Estate Professionals, and volunteers with Soroptimist International of Poway. Most recently, she joined the Sheriff’s Department Senior Volunteer Patrol in their Poway Station. As a devout Catholic, Cynthia is also an active member of St. Gabriel Catholic Church, where her husband serves as deacon. In addition to English, Cynthia is also fluent in Spanish and French. And if you speak the language of wine, she is always happy to regale you with stories of growing up in the Napa Valley.

From My Clients: “Cynthia was exceptionally helpful in my company purchasing an adjoining single family house for the expansion of our business. Although the property was not on the market, she contacted the owners and convinced them to consider an offer from us. She successfully handled some sticky negotiation points dealing with the length of time to secure a commercial loan, leading to the acceptance of a final purchase agreement. The sale closed a couple of months ago. I highly recommend Cynthia to anyone interested in having a competent and ethical professional to represent them on real estate deals. The expansion of my business would not have occurred without her leadership, dedication, and hard work.”

Chad Basinger

Windermere Homes & Estates Chad is a native San Diegan, raised in Rancho Bernardo and educated in the Poway Unified School District. He graduated in the top one percent of his high school class. Chad’s desire to excel led to graduating in just over three years with high honors from the University of Califonia at Santa Barbara. In addition to holding his real estate license since 2007, Chad has his CPA (Certified Public Accountant) and CFP (Certified Financial Planner) licenses. Chad has been honored by the San Diego Association of Realtors, earning the Circle of Excellence Award in 2016 and 2017, which is given to the top five percent of agents in all of San Diego County.

Nothing speaks louder than the voice of the consumer… “Chad has helped us sell two homes within the past three years (2014 and 2017). Both times, we sold the homes within the first week and were very pleased with the sale price both times. (He has also helped us buy our most recent home, which proceeded very smoothly). Chad’s greatest virtues are (1) his in-depth knowledge of the house buying/selling process and the markets, (2) his communication skills and pleasant disposition, and (3) his exceptional work ethic. As a result of these attributes, Chad makes the buying/selling process extremely painless and easy. He assembles all of the paperwork and explains, in very plain language, everything that you need to know to understand what’s happening. He provides very insightful advice on every aspect of the transaction, but his low-pressure approach gives us the freedom to ultimately make our own decisions. And we never once found ourselves waiting on Chad to complete a task to move the buying/selling process along; to the contrary, Chad was always one step ahead and, if anything, he had to wait on my wife and I to sign the documents he’d prepared for us! I literally cannot imagine a real estate agent providing a smoother selling/ buying experience than what we’ve experienced with Chad. I have recommended Chad to all my friends and family looking for a real estate agent in San Diego County, and I will continue to do so in the future without hesitation.” – Ben and Alicia S. “We can’t say enough good things about Chad. He was extremely helpful, knowledgeable, and honest. He made us feel like we were the only people he was working with. If we had a question, he had an answer...and he always got back to us quickly. He helped us sell our home and find a new home quickly. We were able to move out of the old home and right into the new one without a problem. The whole process of buying/selling a home can be stressful, so we felt very lucky to find Chad.” – Nick and Meghan C. “Chad was great to work with through this process. It had been many years since we were in need of a Realtor and my how things have changed! Chad’s expertise in other disciplines was a real compliment to his profession as a Realtor. His calm demeanor provided assurance throughout the transaction and allowed us to stay focused on the positive end result!! I would have no qualms in recommending him as your Realtor.” – John and Theresa C. “Chad is knowledgeable, patient, and genuine. After working with high-pressure agents that didn’t listen well, Chad was a breath of fresh air. He truly understood what we were looking for. And he helped us get the perfect place for our family. We love Chad!” – Jacqueline and Angie T. “We liked Chad’s style from the minute we met him. We just wanted someone honest; that was our number-one criteria. It’s sometimes a tough thing to judge in a person, but we went with him and are so happy we did. He helped us navigate the new-to-us world of California real estate and managed to get us into a wonderful home. He was especially good at the negotiations and gave us what turned out to be very good advice on what offers to put in. We would definitely recommend him to anyone looking to buy or sell a house.” – Todd and Laura W.

She was recommended to us by a former neighbor and from the moment we met her, we felt like we had known each other for a while. She first helped us buy a beautiful new home in a highly competitive seller market. Besides getting our offer accepted, she also navigated the rough waters of escrow with confidence and kept us calm each time we were in panic mode. After we moved into our new home, she helped us sell our old home above asking price and at the highest price in our neighborhood to date. She held open houses, staged our home beautifully, picked up a tab for cleaning and some repairs after the inspection, and kept us informed throughout the process. Professional all the way through and a great human being too! We are so happy with both transactions and as buyers and sellers, we highly recommend Charlotte!” – Jurate & Salil

heryl Shaw is passionate about ensuring that Scripps Ranch remains one of the safest, friendliest, and most desirable places to live in San Diego County. Cheryl and her husband, Mike, reside in the Wine Country area, a community north of Pomerado Road that was greatly affected by the 2003 Cedar Fire. “We moved to Scripps Ranch in 1989, and our home burned to the ground in the Cedar Fire. We stayed in the same location and rebuilt,” revealed Cheryl. It was through the devastation of the Cedar Fire and the subsequent rebuilding process that the concept of the Scripps Ranch Civic Association Neighborhood Watch (SRCANW) was born. In the days after the fire destroyed many homes in the Shaw’s neighborhood, Cheryl realized that they had no HOA to help organize the rebuild. “I walked up and down the street, collecting names and email addresses of those who had just lost their homes. That small group of neighbors became the seed for the NoPo group – residents north of Pomerado Road – who were determined to regroup and recover from the fires,” explained Cheryl. The group shared information about every aspect of the rebuilding process and celebrated every victory. In 2010, Bob Ilko, president of the Scripps Ranch Civic Association, came to Cheryl to discuss the idea of forming a “virtual” Neighborhood Watch for the community. With Cheryl’s experience with the NoPo group, Bob felt she would be the perfect candidate to chair this new component of the SRCA. “When a residential crime occurs in 92131, I contact the San Diego Police Department to get details of the crime and then send an e-blast to SRCANW members. The organization has grown to 2,700 email subscribers,” stated Cheryl. SRCANW is the largest Neighborhood Watch program in San Diego County and is a model used by the SDPD for other neighborhoods. For her dedication and continuous work, Cheryl was recently named the 77th Assembly District’s Woman of the Year for her efforts in disaster relief and public safety. She encourages those who want to learn more about SRCANW to visit its website. Although Cheryl retired from a successful career in the escrow industry, she stated that she is busier now than ever before. “I enjoy traveling, golfing, playing Mahjong, and reading. I also volunteer as an usher and Eucharistic Minister at St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church,” said Cheryl. She and Mike are high school sweethearts and have two adult sons and five grandchildren. “My favorite pastime is definitely spending time with my grandchildren,” stated this proud grandmother and dedicated community volunteer. 

Cathedral Catholic High School Continues a Strong Legacy of Faith, Character, and Achievement by LAINEY KRAL | photos provided by Cathedral Catholic High School

C

athedral Catholic High School’s (CCHS) core values of faith, knowledge, character, and responsibility have guided the development of high-achieving, well-rounded leaders for over 60 years. The CCHS legacy has deep roots, though the name is only 12 years old. Cathedral Girls High School merged with University San Diego High School (UNI) in 1970 on UNI’s Linda Vista Campus. UNI transitioned to the current CCHS Campus in Carmel Valley in 2005 and took on the new name of Cathedral Catholic High School. “No matter what campus you were on, once you become a Don, you’re always a Don,” said CCHS President Mr. Stevan Laaperi. “The Dons’ legacy has never been stronger. Over 50 alumni are among the CCHS team of administrators, faculty, coaches, and staff.” The professional staff is well qualified to uphold that legacy. Most teachers have a master’s degree or higher in the subject they teach, and the entire staff strives to model the values of a Catholic faith community. The school is accredited by the Western Catholic Educational Association and the Western Association of Schools and Colleges, and holds membership with the College Board. “In partnership with parents,

we form an educational ministry that is mutually supportive and a community committed to excellence,” said Principal Mr. Kevin Calkins. “It is our intent that our graduates carry a spirit of intellectual curiosity and a love of learning on their continuing journey of personal and spiritual growth.” Over 1,600 students are currently beginning that journey on the dynamic CCHS campus. Facilities include 75 classrooms, 12 science labs, two computer labs, a robotics lab, a ceramics studio, a music room, a lecture hall, several special-use classrooms, worldclass athletic facilities, a library, a lecture hall, a chapel and meditation garden – there’s a place for every student to discover their passion. Over 70 percent of CCHS students participate in one or more of the school’s 80-plus teams. “Whether you are an athlete, love to act, or have a passion for serving others, at Cathedral Catholic you gain the confidence to make a difference not only in your life but in the world around you,” said Kate, a graduate from the Class of 2017. Nicole, another recent graduate, agreed: “There is an unparalleled wealth of opportunities, and a strong support system in the students and faculty as part of the Catholic community.” 

“It is our intent that our graduates carry a spirit of intellectual curiosity and a love of learning on their continuing journey of personal and spiritual growth.”

ON LAND AND IN

THE WATER Enjoy Everything Mission Bay Has to Offer This Summer by SAMANTHA EDWARDS

S

weet summertime in San Diego means sunshine, lazy beach days, and outdoor barbecues. With its 27 miles of shoreline, grassy parks, playgrounds, and breathtaking views, Mission Bay is perhaps the best place to congregate with friends and family this season. The area is known as the perfect spot for aquatic sports, so you can try your hand at everything from sailing, kayaking, and stand-up paddle boarding to jet skiing, wake boarding, and kite surfing. The bay is also home to boat docks, sailboat and motorboat rentals, and sport fishing and whale watching launching facilities. Mission Bay has plenty to offer for those who prefer to stay on land. Walk, jog, roller skate, or bike along the meandering paths surrounding the bay before enjoying an afternoon picnic in the sun. Strike up a game of volleyball or beach tennis. Break out the barbecue for a sunset dinner or gather around a waterfront bonfire for marshmallow roasting. Be sure to arrive early to claim your spot – it can be busy during the summer months. Visitors with furry friends in tow can venture onto Fiesta Island, a large peninsula within the bay with even more recreation options, including an off-leash dog beach and calm waters for swimming. You’ll also be in close proximity to several local communities – Mission Beach, Pacific Beach, and Ocean Beach – each with their own attractions for continued fun. So whether you’re looking for an action-packed afternoon adventure or just a place to relax and refresh, Mission Bay has something for everyone to experience this summer! 

The Last Hurrah

A

s the Scripps seniors are getting ready to leave their Falcon nest and go off to college, they had a last celebration at prom on June 2. The theme was Garden of Lights, and it was held at the University of San Diego. The dance was from 8 until 11 p.m. and it was filled with dancing, drinks, games, and food. Some students spent all night on the dance floor, while others played poker and blackjack in the game room. Senior Grayson Pham explained, “Everyone was hyped and excited

and just having such a good time.” Those who attended had gone through four years of hard work together, and some have known each other for even longer, so it was bittersweet to say goodbye to some of their closest friends as they had a last celebration to commemorate their years of high school. And what better way to end their high school experience than by having a big celebration? “It was a great way to sum up my high school experience, say goodbye to friends, and transition into

college,” said Asya Bernal, another senior. As their final hurrah, the Scripps Ranch High 2018 Prom created lasting memories in the minds of all those who attended, leaving seniors ready to start their new journey into adulthood. 

Nicole Poirier is a sophomore at Scripps Ranch High School. She is participating in an internship program with 92131 Magazine.

Reconsidering Mello-Roos After the New Tax law – Part 2 by SCOTT VOAK

I

n the last issue, I brought up the question of if it was financially worth it to pay off your Mello-Roos given the fact that the new federal tax law limits the total of your state and local tax deductions to $10,000. I indicated that to try and get an accurate assessment of the value gained by paying off the bonds early, I would file for one of the Mello-Roos bonds on my own property. It took some time to get the information back, but I have it, so let’s take a look. Disclaimer – I am not a financial advisor nor CPA. Please talk to a trusted advisor before making any financial decisions. The bond I checked on is the Poway Unified CFD No 6. This is one of the 4S Ranch-specific Mello-Roos bonds. My 2017/2018 payment was $2,817. The bond was issued in 2003 and matures in 2013, so I am right at the midpoint. The payoff amount is $29,113. If I assume that the Mello-Roos payment will not increase at all, then the return on the early payoff is about 5.3% (if you put the $29,113 into the bank you would need to earn 5.3% to make all your payments

without running out of money). If the annual Mello-Roos payment increases 2% (as allowed), then the return is 7%. So, it comes down to if you think you can earn more than the 5% (or 7%) with other investments. There is also the possibility that a new administration brings back the full deductibility of state taxes, in which case you would not feel very good about having paid it off. On a personal level, I am earning clients much more than 5-7% investing in property out of state, and so I will continue to do that myself rather than pay the bond off. 

he North County community came together for a vital cause at the 2018 Soroptimist High Tea. The annual event is a joint effort presented by Soroptimist International Poway and Soroptimist International North San Diego. This year’s sellout High Tea drew approximately 425 guests in their best hats to the Fairmont Grand Del Mar for an afternoon of socializing, auctions, and a high-fashion runway show. Television personality Leonard Simpson presented the fashion show, and CBS8 news anchor Carlo Cecchetto served as master of ceremonies. The event grossed over $100,000 to support the clubs’ Transitional Housing Program, which provides safe housing for survivors of domestic violence and their children.
