Creating Lasting Memories

M
y wife and I have been blessed with extended families that are very involved in our lives. Being a transplant from Texas (where most of my family still lives), I can appreciate that my wife is a rare third generation San Diegan. She is lucky to have most of her family close by. While we try to spend as much time as possible with both sides of the family, sometimes it gets a little difficult to get everyone together at the same time due to busy schedules and locations. Spending time with the family creates lasting memories. Six years ago, shortly after my grandmother passed away, my grandfather decided to start a tradition of an annual family reunion trip. So each summer, my wife and I take our kids to a lake house outside of Austin, TX for the annual Breaux Family Reunion. For a week, we get to visit and catch up with multiple generations of Breauxs. Our kids hang with their cousins, and the older generation can reminisce about the good ol’ days. It’s been an awesome family tradition that my late grandfather started and left to the family for years to come. My aunt, uncles, and dad are carrying on the annual tradition. And continuing with the creating memories theme, this year my wife’s family surprised everyone with a family trip (thank you T & D). We were able to spend a week with my wife’s parents and her brother and sister’s families. As we cruised through the blue Caribbean waters and various ports of call, we all had a blast visiting and spending time together. The entire experience – the six months leading up to the vacation and the vacation itself – was amazing. Our kids and their cousins ruled the ship (or at least they thought), and all of us adults acted like kids again – even my wife’s parents! There was no shortage of laughs and memorable moments, nor is there a shortage of great photos. I guarantee that we will all be talking about this for years to come. Since these vacations have had such a positive impact on us, I wanted to take a moment to make sure that our families know how much we appreciate spending time with them (yes, some of them actually read this magazine!). Thank you to my late grandparents. Thank you to my dad. Thank you to my aunts and uncles for continuing the traditions, and thank you to my in-laws for putting together a fantastic trip. FOURTH GRADE STUDENTS REVIEW LOCAL PARKS
F
ourth grade students from Innovations Academy in Scripps Ranch conducted a project in which they reviewed and rated local parks. With guidance from teachers Jennifer Franklin, Stephanie Rivera, and Tori Dahlberg, the students used Get Outside San Diego to find parks within a 10-mile radius of the school, then partnered up and chose three parks to evaluate based on the following criteria: shade, bathrooms, playground equipment, views, and sports fields. The teachers and students took a “park crawl” field trip over two days to explore the top parks. Each student used their rubrics to write reviews and give star ratings to the parks they had chosen, then compiled the information into brochures to share with families in the school community. The top parks chosen by the students included South Creek Neighborhood Park, Jerabek Park, Ridgewood Park, Camino Ruiz Neighborhood Park, Mira Mesa Community Park, Carmel Mountain Ranch Community Park, Miramar Overlook Park, Hilltop Park, 4S Ranch Community Park, and Pacific Highlands Ranch Community Park. In his review of South Creek Park, Cam Noseworthy said, “I liked this park because there were plenty of things to do and play with and climb on. This park has everything you would want at a park. I would suggest this park to all families because there are so many things to do.” “Mira Mesa Community Park is an exciting park with cool stuff,” wrote
Abigail Stevens. “It has water fountains and bathrooms too. Honestly, I would not change anything.” In her review of Miramar Overlook Park, Maya B. wrote, “I

Dr. Gilmore lives in 92131, where he and his wife raised their two children, and his practice sponsors all the local schools and sports teams. “Many of my patients live in the same area that I do, so I know and understand the importance of the culture of community in my practice,” Dr. Gilmore said. Personalized care and exceptional customer service are top priorities at Gilmore Orthodontics. “I treat all patients and their families as I would want my own family members to be treated,” Dr. Gilmore affirmed. Patients are personally greeted by staff members when they enter the office. Dr. Gilmore allots enough time for each appointment so that he can give the patient a full rundown of the treatment plan, answer questions, and even chat about the patient’s latest vacation or sporting event. He then completed a residency in orthodontics and earned a second master’s degree in dentistry. Dr. Gilmore served an additional 12 years as a dentist and orthodontist in the Navy before retiring in 2011. Dr. Gilmore is the only American Board of Orthodontics-certified orthodontist in Scripps Ranch. As a specialist with advanced training, he is also a member of an elite Invisalign Master Pilot Group. His practice offers full, comprehensive orthodontics and early Phase I treatment using the most advanced traditional braces as well as clear aligners for children and adults alike. Nonprofit of the Year The 77th Assembly District’s 2019 Nonprofit of the Year is the Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank. The organization serves an average of 350,000 people per month, distributing food directly to San Diegans in need at more than 200 sites every month as well as providing food for more than 500 other nonprofit feeding programs, such as soup kitchens and churches. “The San Diego Food Bank has served an important role in our community through the years,” said Assemblymember Brian Maienschein, who presented the award. “I truly appreciate their work providing food and other resources to those who are in need in the San Diego region.” Around 24,000 people volunteer at the nonprofit warehouse every year and provided 28 million pounds of food in 2018. “It takes a community to feed a community, and this award honors the wonderful people who make our mission possible,” said James A. Local Students Win at FIRST World Championships
Dingeman Elementary students Aarnav Jain, Joshua Pun, Siddharth Goel, and Adam Couvrette, also known as team Builder Beavers, participated in the FIRST LEGO League (FLL) Jr. World Championship competition in Houston, TX against hundreds of teams from around the world. The team tackled the 2019 FLL Jr. challenge, Mission Moon, exploring the idea of human survival on the moon, and built a LEGO model representing their solution. They won first place in the Creative Model Award category. FLL Jr., the first level in the FIRST program, introduces students ages 6 to 10 to robotics, problem solving, and teamwork through handson projects. The program focuses on building interest in STEM through a real-world challenge – to be solved by research, critical thinking, and imagination. Small Business of the Year Second Chance Beer Company, an independent brewery founded in Carmel Mountain Ranch, was recently named the 77th Assembly District 2019 Small Business of the Year. The business stands out for its commitment to environmental sustainability. Through its charity program, Giving Second Chances, the company donates one percent of all annual sales to organizations that serve people, animals, and the planet. The Super Dentists are very active in the community, especially with causes related to children and education. They regularly participate in speaking engagements and career fairs at local schools, and host on-site job shadowing opportunities, wellness fairs, and mouth guard fitting clinics. Dr. Lin went on to Northwestern University Medical Center for his oral and maxillofacial surgery residency. KID COACHES TRAIN THEIR OWN COACH AT THE ANNUAL COACHES CUP by KELLEY GUSICH
W
ith over $30,000 in funds raised this year, North County Gymnastics and Gyminny Kids have once again combined their efforts to benefit Rady Children’s Hospital. The Coaches Cup happened on June 9, gathering athletes and their coaches from North County Gymnastics/Gyminny Kids, Pacific Coast Gymnastics, Poway Gymnastics, and the Peach Pit. The event combines student demonstrations and circus performances, and in an interesting role reversal, the top fundraising athlete for each coach then gets to coach that coach for the event. “Most children think an adult over the age of 14 is old,” Daniel Gundert, Director of Operations and Head Team Coach for North County Gymnastics and Gyminny Kids noted, “so the fundraising kids think the idea of their old coach competing is just hilarious!” Poway Gymnastics donated the equipment for the event, at a value well over $10,000, and the time and effort the fundraisers put into the event has proven the most heartwarming and memorable part. From lemonade stands to collecting pledges door-to-door, kid athletes for the Coaches Cup bring everyone together for the crucial cause of children’s health. “This is what we believe as a company,” Daniel affirmed, “but more importantly, this is the life lesson we want to teach our children. If you want something in life, you need to give first without expectation of anything in return. It’s not about the competition, it’s about giving back!” The goal for the Coaches Cup is to see the event grow every year, with a bigger picture vision to eventually have one in every major city across the United States. This way, any company with the title “coach” can fundraise for their local hospital. Imagine any sport: CrossFit, swimming, football, wrestling, diving, track and field – the list of possibilities is endless – with athletes giving their time and coaches getting to compete in the sport they love to benefit the greater good. “Rady Children’s has touched so many of our lives including my son, our employees, and customers, to name a few. Rady’s truly does great things for families regardless of their ability to pay for medical services,” shared Daniel. The 2019 Coaches Cup saw North County Gymnastics as its top fundraiser, followed by Pacific Coast and Poway Gymnastics. “I was sore for a week after the day of the competition, but it was the highlight of my year,” Daniel said. “That feeling of giving is something we want to pass on.”

SADDLE UP IN SAN DIEGO Take to the Trails and Make New Equine Friends This Summer by LAINEY KRAL
T
here’s nothing quite like leaning back in the saddle or petting a velvety nose while the blue summer sky stretches above you. San Diego is home to a vibrant, varied equine community. Whether you’re the parent of an enthusiastic future cowgirl, a grown-up barn kid who hasn’t ridden in years, or just plain curious, there are plenty of opportunities to get involved and experience something new. Besides lessons and summer camps, guided trail rides are a great opportunity for new riders or those just getting back in the saddle. Options include giddying up through the hills of Poway, riding through the surf on a beach ride, and wine tasting adventures in Temecula. Many facilities offer both public and private rides – especially for larger groups, it’s smart to call ahead to confirm availability. Be sure to check the weather policy too, in case of cancellations. If getting in the saddle isn’t your style, there are still plenty of opportunities to enjoy the world of horses from the ground. The Del Mar Racetrack may be San Diego’s most famous equine destination, but don’t miss the hunter, jumper, and equitation events at nearby Showpark of San Diego. The 2019 Poway Rodeo is also coming up on Sept. 27 and 28, showcasing Western disciplines like barrel racing and roping. San Diego even has a thriving polo scene – check out organizations like Lakeside Polo Club, Poway Polo Club, or San Diego Polo Club for beginner lessons or upcoming events to watch. You can also combine a love of horses with a love of making a difference. The San Diego area has a number of therapeutic riding centers and equine rescues that are often open to volunteers and support. Whatever your interests and wherever you go, whether you’re sitting astride a thoroughbred or a pony, remember to pause for a bit and just enjoy the moment. Have a good ride!

Falcons Prepare to Leave the Nest
W
ith summer well underway, most Scripps Ranch High students are worrying about how to spend all their free time. However, for some, this summer marks the end of childhood, as soon they will be off to college. Come fall, Anika Jessup will be off to Vermont to attend Middlebury College. Jessup is excited for the new opportunities Middlebury holds for her, in particular the ability to delve into fields she’s passionate about. “I am hoping to get a joint major in environmental studies and food studies,” Jessup commented. The small class sizes, campus sustainability, and student farms really spoke to Jessup throughout the college process, and now she can’t wait to
be one of the “Midd Kids.” Also traveling east is Eileen Huang, who will be attending Northeastern University in Boston. Huang looks forward to studying business, as well as taking part in the opportunities Northeastern provides. “Northeastern offers co-ops in which students are given the chance to take a break from school for intervals of time (usually six months) to get handson experience within a company,” Huang stated. Being part of both city life and traditional college campus life gives Huang the best of both worlds, and makes her feel ready to begin the next chapter of her life. Leanne Dugan is staying local with her college pick, and is looking forward
to attending University of California San Diego. “This school really chose me,” Dugan said. “I’ve been doing research under some professors at UCSD for about a year now, so I will be able to continue that, which is really valuable.” Dugan likes how she’ll be able to experience college life, but stay close to home. We wish the best to all graduating Falcons, and hope they soar no matter where life takes them.
