Creating Lasting Memories

P U B L I S HE R

Derrick Breaux

M

y wife and I have been blessed with extended families that are very involved in our lives. Being a transplant from Texas (where most of my family still lives), I can appreciate that my wife is a rare third generation San Diegan. She is lucky to have most of her family close by. While we try to spend as much time as possible with both sides of the family, sometimes it gets a little difficult to get everyone together at the same time due to busy schedules and locations. Spending time with the family creates lasting memories. Six years ago, shortly after my grandmother passed away, my grandfather decided to start a tradition of an annual family reunion trip. So each summer, my wife and I take our kids to a lake house outside of Austin, TX for the annual Breaux Family Reunion. For a week, we get to visit and catch up with multiple generations of Breauxs. Our kids hang with their cousins, and the older generation can reminisce about the good ol’ days. It’s been an awesome family tradition that my late grandfather started and left to the family for years to come. My aunt, uncles, and dad are carrying on the annual tradition. And continuing with the creating memories theme, this year my wife’s family surprised everyone with a family trip (thank you T & D). We were able to spend a week with my wife’s parents and her brother and sister’s families. As we cruised through the blue Caribbean waters and various ports of call, we all had a blast visiting and spending time together. The entire experience – the six months leading up to the vacation and the vacation itself – was amazing. Our kids and their cousins ruled the ship (or at least they thought), and all of us adults acted like kids again – even my wife’s parents! There was no shortage of laughs and memorable moments, nor is there a shortage of great photos. I guarantee that we will all be talking about this for years to come. Since these vacations have had such a positive impact on us, I wanted to take a moment to make sure that our families know how much we appreciate spending time with them (yes, some of them actually read this magazine!). Thank you to my late grandparents. Thank you to my dad. Thank you to my aunts and uncles for continuing the traditions, and thank you to my in-laws for putting together a fantastic trip. We love you guys! And thank YOU for being a reader of 92131 Magazine. Please don’t be a stranger. Park Crawl

FOURTH GRADE STUDENTS REVIEW LOCAL PARKS

F

ourth grade students from Innovations Academy in Scripps Ranch conducted a project in which they reviewed and rated local parks. With guidance from teachers Jennifer Franklin, Stephanie Rivera, and Tori Dahlberg, the students used Get Outside San Diego to find parks within a 10-mile radius of the school, then partnered up and chose three parks to evaluate based on the following criteria: shade, bathrooms, playground equipment, views, and sports fields. The teachers and students took a “park crawl” field trip over two days to explore the top parks. Each student used their rubrics to write reviews and give star ratings to the parks they had chosen, then compiled the information into brochures to share with families in the school community. The top parks chosen by the students included South Creek Neighborhood Park, Jerabek Park, Ridgewood Park, Camino Ruiz Neighborhood Park, Mira Mesa Community Park, Carmel Mountain Ranch Community Park, Miramar Overlook Park, Hilltop Park, 4S Ranch Community Park, and Pacific Highlands Ranch Community Park. In his review of South Creek Park, Cam Noseworthy said, “I liked this park because there were plenty of things to do and play with and climb on. This park has everything you would want at a park. I would suggest this park to all families because there are so many things to do.” “Mira Mesa Community Park is an exciting park with cool stuff,” wrote

r. David S. Gilmore and his staff at Gilmore Orthodontics know Scripps Ranch. Dr. Gilmore lives in 92131, where he and his wife raised their two children, and his practice sponsors all the local schools and sports teams. “Many of my patients live in the same area that I do, so I know and understand the importance of the culture of community in my practice,” Dr. Gilmore said. Personalized care and exceptional customer service are top priorities at Gilmore Orthodontics. “I treat all patients and their families as I would want my own family members to be treated,” Dr. Gilmore affirmed. Patients are personally greeted by staff members when they enter the office. Dr. Gilmore allots enough time for each appointment so that he can give the patient a full rundown of the treatment plan, answer questions, and even chat about the patient’s latest vacation or sporting event. He also personally calls to check on patients between appointments. “Dr. Gilmore’s personality and caring nature is what patients routinely notice and comment on,” said Cecilia Keane, Treatment Coordinator. Beyond providing a comfortable patient experience, Dr. Gilmore is highly qualified in his field. After serving as a nuclear engineer in the U.S. Navy for 11 years, he decided to pursue his passion of dentistry. He attended the University of the Pacific, where he earned his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree – graduating with high honors. He then completed a residency in orthodontics and earned a second master’s degree in dentistry. DIGITAL MUSIC: HOW CAN I CREATE IT? I

n the last decade the face of digital music recording has changed dramatically. Now, for a modest budget, a bedroom producer can have all of the tools necessary to make a great sounding recording. There’s only one issue… how do you use all this stuff?! Finding the DAW (digital audio workstation) that’s right for you can be a daunting enough task, but knowing the ins and outs of your software can take years to master without guidance. The best bet for any aspiring producer is targeted, hands-on training, customized to their program preferences, learning styles, and experience. YouTube might have a slew of videos, but it’s a distant second to an expert instructor with hands-on training. Luckily, Studio West employs a team of experienced engineers and producers that are happy to show students the ropes. One-onone instruction at Studio West offers aspiring creatives direct answers, not just to broad, easily searchable questions, but specific difficulties with workflow. Offering help in

topics including production and arrangement, mixing and recording, Pro Tools, Ableton Live, Logic Pro, and FL Studio, the team of experts knows that one-on-one lessons leads to progress in tracks production fairly quickly. Studio West offers one-on-one instruction options to all ages in addition to their year-long post-secondary diploma in audio production. Another not-to-miss opportunity is the Youth Programs, offered over seven individual weeks of summer camps. Pair this with the school year Production Workshop – a quarterly collective of talented kids meeting once a week to produce incredible music – and your teen has a head start in this amazing industry. If you want to up your game, hands-on training is your best bet! 

Nonprofit of the Year The 77th Assembly District’s 2019 Nonprofit of the Year is the Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank. The organization serves an average of 350,000 people per month, distributing food directly to San Diegans in need at more than 200 sites every month as well as providing food for more than 500 other nonprofit feeding programs, such as soup kitchens and churches. “The San Diego Food Bank has served an important role in our community through the years,” said Assemblymember Brian Maienschein, who presented the award. “I truly appreciate their work providing food and other resources to those who are in need in the San Diego region.” Around 24,000 people volunteer at the nonprofit warehouse every year and provided 28 million pounds of food in 2018. “It takes a community to feed a community, and this award honors the wonderful people who make our mission possible,” said James A. Floros, San Diego Food Bank President and CEO. Learn more at www.sandiegofoodbank.org.

Local Students Win at FIRST World Championships

Dingeman Elementary students Aarnav Jain, Joshua Pun, Siddharth Goel, and Adam Couvrette, also known as team Builder Beavers, participated in the FIRST LEGO League (FLL) Jr. World Championship competition in Houston, TX against hundreds of teams from around the world. The team tackled the 2019 FLL Jr. challenge, Mission Moon, exploring the idea of human survival on the moon, and built a LEGO model representing their solution. They won first place in the Creative Model Award category. FLL Jr., the first level in the FIRST program, introduces students ages 6 to 10 to robotics, problem solving, and teamwork through handson projects. The program focuses on building interest in STEM through a real-world challenge – to be solved by research, critical thinking, and imagination. Guided by adult coaches, students build models using LEGO Education WeDo 2.0 and create Show Me posters to present what they learned. For more information go to www.firstinspires.org/robotics/flljr.

Small Business of the Year Second Chance Beer Company, an independent brewery founded in Carmel Mountain Ranch, was recently named the 77th Assembly District 2019 Small Business of the Year. The business stands out for its commitment to environmental sustainability. Through its charity program, Giving Second Chances, the company donates one percent of all annual sales to organizations that serve people, animals, and the planet. More than 70% of the company’s furnishings are upcycled, recycled, and repurposed as well. “Second Chance Beer Company has served as a worthy example for many businesses to follow,” said Assemblymember Brian Maienschein. “Despite being a relatively new brewery, the company has contributed tremendously to both the economic strength and environmental sustainability of our community.” The brewery was founded by Marty Mendiola, Curtis Hawes, and Virginia Morrison. In addition to the original Carmel Mountain Ranch brewery and taproom, they now have a tasting room in North Park.

he Super Dentists’ Dr. Kami Hoss and Dr. Nazli Keri, also known as their alter-egos Dr. Have One Super Smile and The Tooth Keri, respectively, are transforming the dental experience for children and adults. The Super Dentists provides a unique patient experience through original movies, music, and fun superhero and villain characters. The offices look like theme parks and feature video games, a dress-up area, and even a special door for children. “We’ve taken something that is typically feared and created an environment where kids beg to visit and don’t want to leave,” said Dr. Kami Hoss, Co-Founder of The Super Dentists. “Because we know that if kids like going to the dentist, they will go to the dentist and will take care of their mouths.” The Super Dentists experience begins before patients even step foot through the door with the practice’s innovative augmented reality app. Parents receive a link to the augmented reality welcome video and watch it with their children so they know what to expect. They are also introduced to The Super Dentists characters: Dr. Have One Super Smile, The Tooth Keri, MeloD, Cavitar, and Molar. “The app is fun and interactive,” said Dr. Kami Hoss. “Kids can take their picture with the characters to become part of the experience, then share photos and videos with their parents and friends via text or social media.” Though pediatric dentistry is the core service at The Super Dentists, the practice also offers dentistry for parents and orthodontics for the whole family – and it can be fun, too! “We’ve changed everything adults hate about going to the dentist,” Dr. Kami Hoss said. The Super Dentists are very active in the community, especially with causes related to children and education. They regularly participate in speaking engagements and career fairs at local schools, and host on-site job shadowing opportunities, wellness fairs, and mouth guard fitting clinics. They also provide free dental care on Free Dental Day every year, and pay kids for their leftover Halloween candy that’s then donated to military troops overseas through their Candy Buy Back program. “We love seeing the reaction of children and parents when they come to see The Super Dentists and interact with all of our services and amenities,” Dr. Kami Hoss said. “We know how important oral health is to your overall health, and we are honored to be making a big difference in peoples’ lives and futures.” 

A Healthy Family Starts With a Doctor You Can Trust

M

anaging your family’s health care is not usually top of mind until a loved one is sick or you’ve had a life change. Choosing the right care can be overwhelming and confusing, but selecting a primary care doctor ahead of time helps ensure the best care for your family when the need arises. A primary care doctor coordinates your family’s routine and specialty care. Finding the right doctor will depend on your unique needs. If you haven’t given much thought to this important decision, here’s a good place to start: Decide which type of primary care doctor you want. There are four types of primary care doctors: • Pediatricians care for children and adolescents. • Family medicine doctors treat the whole family, from infants to older adults. • Internal medicine doctors treat adults age 18 and up. • Internal medicine/pediatric doctors are board certified in both internal medicine and pediatrics, and treat people of all ages.

Think about your personal preferences. • Are you more comfortable with a male or female doctor? • Do you want your doctor’s office close to your home or work? • Do you need a doctor who speaks a language other than English? • Which hospitals does the doctor admit to?

Consider convenience. Many North County families that have busy schedules look for a doctor who offers a wide variety of ways to access care. These can include: • Video and phone appointments. • The convenience of a medical center where many services, such as pharmacy, lab, radiology, and urgent care, are all under one roof. • Same-day appointments. • After-hours pediatric care for when the kids are sick. • The ability to securely manage your and your family’s health care online by messaging your doctor’s office, making appointments, viewing lab results, and more. Confirm your insurance coverage. When you find the ideal doctor, you’ll need to verify if they are in your health plan network. Call the number listed on your insurance card to confirm, and let your insurance carrier know you’ve selected that person as your new primary care doctor. Sharp Rees-Stealy can help you navigate your options and make it easy to find a doctor. Plus, they accept almost all health insurance plans. Select your doctor at sharp.com/srsdoctor or by calling 858-264-2539.  July | August 2019 • 92131MAGAZINE.COM • 23

ince Dr. Christopher Maulik S C R I P P S P O W A Y took over Scripps Poway O R THODONTICS Orthodontics in 2007, he has worked hard to earn a trustworthy reputation in the community for delivering top-quality care and exceptional results. Dr. Maulik is known for refusing to take shortcuts and managing tough cases well. He also isn’t afraid to tell patients if orthodontia isn’t needed, but if it is, he and his office staff are committed to making it a positive experience for everyone. “We treat our patients well and we thrive primarily from word of mouth in the great community of Scripps Ranch,” he said. “Ask your neighbors – chances are, one of them has come to us.” As someone who had braces as a teen, Dr. Maulik comes from a place of understanding and experience. He saw what a positive impact orthodontic treatment could have on patients and decided to pursue a career in the field. After graduating from one of the top dental schools in the country, the University of Connecticut School of Dental Medicine, he was inducted into Omicron Kappa Upsilon, a national dental honor society for the top 5% in the class, and went on to complete an orthodontic residency at UCONN. These days, Dr. Maulik is focusing his efforts on his patients and the community at large. His practice has supported every school and several sports teams within the community. He also understands that his patients have busy schedules – he offers late night appointments during the week and is open one Saturday a month and on most school holidays so that children miss as little school as possible. When he’s not working hard to serve the community, Dr. Maulik can be found surfing or spending time with his wife and four children. His oldest daughter is nine, he has six-year-old boy and girl twins, and a two-year-old daughter.  C H R I S T O P H E R

r. Jodi McGrady opened McGrady Dental Group with one goal: taking care of families. “I love working with kids and helping to introduce them to dentistry without fear,” Dr. McGrady explained. “By offering services for the entire family, kids don’t have to age out of our practice, and busy moms can get their teeth cleaned at the same time as the kids.” She has always had an interest in comprehensive, communityminded dentistry. After receiving her first dental degree at University of Pittsburgh, she studied hospital dentistry and trained to treat children with special needs at University of Iowa, receiving a master’s degree in dental public health. She and her husband, periodontist Dr. Michael Spilotro, practiced together in Santa Fe, NM for 10 years before relocating to San Diego. Dr. McGrady continued studying pediatric dentistry at University of California Los Angeles and Rady Children’s Hospital, completing her pediatric residency in 2011. She remains involved with the hospital. “I’m currently the Chief of Dental Services at Rady Children’s Hospital,” she explained. “This gives us one more option for kids with health concerns or extensive treatment needs to be treated in a safe environment.” Providing safe, high-quality treatment and serving the community is a family affair at McGrady Dental Group. Dr. McGrady lives locally with her husband and three teenagers. Her husband works in the office two days a month, and two of her children join Dr. McGrady on trips to Ensenada, Mexico, volunteering with 1000 Smiles. “I enjoy the relationships you build in pediatrics and family dentistry,” Dr. McGrady concluded. “You truly watch kids grow up and get to share in their joys and successes.”  July | August 2019 • 92131MAGAZINE.COM • 25

Kids Helping Kids

KID COACHES TRAIN THEIR OWN COACH AT THE ANNUAL COACHES CUP by KELLEY GUSICH

W

ith over $30,000 in funds raised this year, North County Gymnastics and Gyminny Kids have once again combined their efforts to benefit Rady Children’s Hospital. The Coaches Cup happened on June 9, gathering athletes and their coaches from North County Gymnastics/Gyminny Kids, Pacific Coast Gymnastics, Poway Gymnastics, and the Peach Pit. The event combines student demonstrations and circus performances, and in an interesting role reversal, the top fundraising athlete for each coach then gets to coach that coach for the event. “Most children think an adult over the age of 14 is old,” Daniel Gundert, Director of Operations and Head Team Coach for North County Gymnastics and Gyminny Kids noted, “so the fundraising kids think the idea of their old coach competing is just hilarious!” Poway Gymnastics donated the equipment for the event, at a value well over $10,000, and the time and effort the fundraisers put into the event has proven the most heartwarming and memorable part. From lemonade stands to collecting pledges door-to-door, kid athletes for the Coaches Cup bring everyone together for the crucial cause of children’s health. “This is what we believe as a company,” Daniel affirmed, “but more importantly, this is the life lesson we want to teach our children. If you want something in life, you need to give first without expectation of anything in return. It’s not about the competition, it’s about giving back!” The goal for the Coaches Cup is to see the event grow every year, with a bigger picture vision to eventually have one in every major city across the United States. This way, any company with the title “coach” can fundraise for their local hospital. Imagine any sport: CrossFit, swimming, football, wrestling, diving, track and field – the list of possibilities is endless – with athletes giving their time and coaches getting to compete in the sport they love to benefit the greater good. “Rady Children’s has touched so many of our lives including my son, our employees, and customers, to name a few. Rady’s truly does great things for families regardless of their ability to pay for medical services,” shared Daniel. The 2019 Coaches Cup saw North County Gymnastics as its top fundraiser, followed by Pacific Coast and Poway Gymnastics. “I was sore for a week after the day of the competition, but it was the highlight of my year,” Daniel said. “That feeling of giving is something we want to pass on.” 

SADDLE UP IN SAN DIEGO Take to the Trails and Make New Equine Friends This Summer by LAINEY KRAL

T

here’s nothing quite like leaning back in the saddle or petting a velvety nose while the blue summer sky stretches above you. San Diego is home to a vibrant, varied equine community. Whether you’re the parent of an enthusiastic future cowgirl, a grown-up barn kid who hasn’t ridden in years, or just plain curious, there are plenty of opportunities to get involved and experience something new. Besides lessons and summer camps, guided trail rides are a great opportunity for new riders or those just getting back in the saddle. Options include giddying up through the hills of Poway, riding through the surf on a beach ride, and wine tasting adventures in Temecula. Many facilities offer both public and private rides – especially for larger groups, it’s smart to call ahead to confirm availability. Be sure to check the weather policy too, in case of cancellations. If getting in the saddle isn’t your style, there are still plenty of opportunities to enjoy the world of horses from the ground. The Del Mar Racetrack may be San Diego’s most famous equine destination, but don’t miss the hunter, jumper, and equitation events at nearby Showpark of San Diego. The 2019 Poway Rodeo is also coming up on Sept. 27 and 28, showcasing Western disciplines like barrel racing and roping. San Diego even has a thriving polo scene – check out organizations like Lakeside Polo Club, Poway Polo Club, or San Diego Polo Club for beginner lessons or upcoming events to watch. You can also combine a love of horses with a love of making a difference. The San Diego area has a number of therapeutic riding centers and equine rescues that are often open to volunteers and support. Whatever your interests and wherever you go, whether you’re sitting astride a thoroughbred or a pony, remember to pause for a bit and just enjoy the moment. Have a good ride! 

STABLE SAFETY • Wear closed-toe shoes, and strap on your helmet before getting in the saddle. • When meeting an unfamiliar horse, always ask its owner whether it’s okay to pet it, feed treats, or take photos. • Walk, don’t run! Sudden movements and loud noises can make horses nervous. • Pay attention to facility rules and listen to your instructor – every barn and every horse is unique!

Falcons Prepare to Leave the Nest

W

ith summer well underway, most Scripps Ranch High students are worrying about how to spend all their free time. However, for some, this summer marks the end of childhood, as soon they will be off to college. Come fall, Anika Jessup will be off to Vermont to attend Middlebury College. Jessup is excited for the new opportunities Middlebury holds for her, in particular the ability to delve into fields she’s passionate about. “I am hoping to get a joint major in environmental studies and food studies,” Jessup commented. The small class sizes, campus sustainability, and student farms really spoke to Jessup throughout the college process, and now she can’t wait to

be one of the “Midd Kids.” Also traveling east is Eileen Huang, who will be attending Northeastern University in Boston. Huang looks forward to studying business, as well as taking part in the opportunities Northeastern provides. “Northeastern offers co-ops in which students are given the chance to take a break from school for intervals of time (usually six months) to get handson experience within a company,” Huang stated. Being part of both city life and traditional college campus life gives Huang the best of both worlds, and makes her feel ready to begin the next chapter of her life. Leanne Dugan is staying local with her college pick, and is looking forward

to attending University of California San Diego. “This school really chose me,” Dugan said. “I’ve been doing research under some professors at UCSD for about a year now, so I will be able to continue that, which is really valuable.” Dugan likes how she’ll be able to experience college life, but stay close to home. We wish the best to all graduating Falcons, and hope they soar no matter where life takes them. 
