A
little over a year ago, I wrote about how our kids were taking music lessons and having fun learning to play and sing various popular songs. They are now into music more than ever before, and a lot has happened in a year. In case you are hearing about this for the first time, Peyton plays guitar and sings. Audrey plays drums and piano, but she insists that drums are her number one. The two of them have come a long way over the last year. For starters, they formed a band and decided to officially name their two-person “brother and sister” duo Call Me Breaux. When we discussed their name choice, both Audrey and Peyton explained that people have called them by their last name (pronounced “bro”) their entire life – especially in sports – so it just makes sense for a band name. When my wife and I realized how much they liked singing and performing, we started to gradually convert our dining room into a small music studio. On any given day, you can often hear some type of music being performed by one or both of them. And every once in a while, something magical happens when they come together and play their growing set of songs. It’s fun to be preparing dinner and hear your kids jamming out in the other room. Who needs a radio when you can get live performances inside your house daily? And although they love to play music for the pure sense of accomplishment, now they’ve experienced the thrill of performing live on stage. Last month, they were invited to play a set at the world-famous Whiskey a Go Go in Hollywood. A couple of weeks later, they played the House of Blues in San Diego. This was particularly special for them because quite a few of their friends were at the show. They made it clear to me that having their friends in the audience was the coolest thing ever! It’s a pretty crazy thing to stand in the audience and watch your kids (ages 13 and 12) get up on stage in front of a crowd. As a parent, I experience a wide range of emotions. I’m nervous for them. I’m proud of them. And I’m amazed at their determination and willingness to put themselves out there. So far, they’ve only played cover songs. But recently, they have decided that writing and producing their own original songs is where they want to go. They said that it would be awesome to hear their songs playing on the radio one day, so now they are more determined than ever to make this happen. A special thank you to The Fine Tune Academy for continuing to teach music theory to our kids, to Studio West for providing a great local professional recording atmosphere, and to family and friends (you know who you are) that offer amazing support for their music journey. Be sure to check out their next performance at the House of Blues in San Diego on March 31. A limited number of discounted tickets are available. Email hello@callmebreaux.com for more information.

SANCTUARY LOUNGE PROVIDES THE DOWNTOWN VIBE WITHOUT THE DOWNTOWN DRIVE by BECCA BARR | photos provided by Sanctuary Lounge

ightclubs are fun, but it’s not enjoyable fighting traffic to get there. Enter Sanctuary Lounge. This upscale nightclub, which was established in 2013 and is located in Scripps Ranch, offers live music, a full bar, a walk-in cigar humidor, a game room, and a covered smoking patio. “We provide the downtown vibe without the downtown drive,” explained President Jeff Goldfinger. “Sanctuary means ‘a place of refuge or safety.’ That’s what we provide. It’s a place to get away from whatever your worries of the moment are and escape to a better place.” The original investors of Sanctuary Lounge were looking for such a venue. However, all of the 21+ nightclubs were either downtown in the Gaslamp District or along the coast, neither of which were convenient. They realized that Scripps Ranch was a perfect location, having watched the area grow from a sleepy bedroom community to a well-respected family and high-tech business magnet. “We’ve become a destination for folks as far away as Temecula, East Lake, Oceanside, etc. They prefer our place instead of having to fight all of the traffic and parking hassles elsewhere,” shared Jeff. Sanctuary Lounge. “We offer karaoke, DJs, jazz bands, comedy nights, solo artists, wine and painting parties, sports TV, pool table, dart board...the list goes on,” related Jeff. “Lots of places have maybe three or four of those on the list. We have nearly a dozen different ways to be entertained.” Their smoking patio was created so that smokers don’t feel ostracized, and their atmosphere is cozy. “It’s a lounge in the truest sense of the word, with oversized stuffed couches and chairs, furnished like your living room. We have a small but often full dance floor,” said Jeff. It’s an easy exit off the freeway, and they offer plenty of free parking. While they have a full bar, Sanctuary Lounge prides itself on its selection of San Diego craft beer. “We have 16 beer taps and at least 15 of them (sometimes all 16) are dedicated to local craft beers,” said Jeff. They are not a restaurant; however, the Sombrero’s Mexican food next door created a custom menu for them. “You can order inside Sanctuary and we pick it up for you when it’s ready,” Jeff explained. You can also bring in your own food. With their Yelp and Facebook reviews raving about their staff and superior customer service, patrons can be sure to have a great experience. ¢ SPECIAL ADVERTISEMENT

owntown San Diego’s Little Italy will soon transform nearly 20 blocks into the Mission Federal ArtWalk, an arts and culture event with over 350 local, national, and international artists representing almost every medium of art. The ArtWalk, themed Connecting Creative Communities, will be a free two-day festival taking place on April 28 and 29, with live music, dance, and poetry performances, interactive art activities, street food, and kid-friendly art projects. “We are so proud of bringing this festival to San Diego’s Little Italy for over a third of a century, and connecting the community and visitors to the vibrant arts scene in San Diego,” said Sandi Cottrell, director of Mission Federal ArtWalk.
While there will be artists from every corner of the world, some local North County artists will also be showcasing their work, including photographer Ivan Farca and pastel painter Susie Zolghadri, who are both from the Scripps Ranch area. Ivan, who has lived most of his life in Mexico City, began his artistic career studying 3D animation and now photographs nature and landscapes. Susie, originally from Vermont, is a mixed media artist who started in fabric making and later learned to paint. Mission Federal ArtWalk will run from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and will be located between Ash and Grape Streets in Little Italy. cripps Ranch residents since 1997, the Pennington family loves SR and their Traviata neighborhood, with caring friends and great paths for running and walking. Parents Ron and Marilou met through a close mutual friend when they were in college, and they chose to move to Scripps Ranch because the new construction at the time signified a growing community. They have grown to a family of six with children Nathan, Julia, Gabriel, and Olivia. Hobbies as a family include supporting each other at games, performances, volunteer efforts, and ‘Yelping’ new places to eat wherever they go. The family loves to volunteer their time for Scouts, the National Foundation for Autism Research, their church, and basketball. “Much time over the past several years has gone to Scripps Ranch National Basketball League,” they shared, “where we serve on the board, the kids play and keep score, and Ron and Gabriel coach.” With Ron as an electrical engineer and Marilou an accountant, both have worked for government contractors for most of their careers – Ron on the technical side and Marilou in the finance and compliance area. studying computer engineering and Gabriel is a sophomore at Scripps Ranch High School (SRHS), where he plays basketball, piano, and guitar. Both boys are actively involved with Boy Scouts. Daughter Julia is a sophomore at SRHS, whereas Olivia is in eighth grade at St. Gregory the Great Catholic School. “We feel truly blessed that we were a part of the
small group of families that took a chance when St. Gregory the Great Catholic School opened in 2009,” the Penningtons affirmed. “A sense of service and the importance of respect for yourself and others is instilled in the students each and every day.” Julia is a varsity basketball player and Gender Equality Club vice president, while Olivia does Academic Decathlon and Student Council. The Penningtons enjoy their precious time together, keeping track of each other and their events through Google Calendars, which works well as long as an event actually makes it into the calendar. They feel that Scripps Ranch has been a wonderful place for raising a family because not only does the community celebrate each other’s successes, but also it pulls together during the tough times. The Penningtons struggle, like so many other families they know, to help their children cope with the enormous amount of academic and social pressure in today’s environment. They want kids to realize that they are so much more than their test scores and GPAs and are thankful that many others in the community are working to do the same. “The saying goes ‘it takes a village to raise a child,’ and the Scripps Ranch community takes this to heart.” ¢

HIGHER GOALS HIGHER GOALS HIGHER GOALS REHAN CHINOY AND KEVIN SALCEDA MAKE A DIFFERENCE AND SHARE THEIR LOVE OF SOCCER THROUGH KICKS4KIDS by JENNIFER FRAKES | photo by Spark Photography
P
laying soccer is a passion for Scripps Ranch resident Rehan Chinoy and 4S Ranch resident Kevin Salceda. They have been playing the sport since they were four years old and are grateful for the many opportunities soccer has afforded them, both on and off the field. Using this passion for soccer, Rehan and Kevin founded Kicks4Kids, an organization whose mission is to collect and deliver used, but functional, sports equipment to less fortunate children in San Diego and around the world. “During my junior year of high school, I interned with Yalla San Diego. This group combines the promise of education and the passion of soccer to inspire refugee and immigrant youth to achieve a college education. In talking with Kevin, we came up with the idea of getting used cleats for the kids after realizing how fast some of our soccer teammates were going through shiny new cleats,” explained Rehan. Their first Kicks4Kids donation drive was for Yalla San Diego and it was a huge success.
The group’s second equipment drive benefited the American Haitian Foundation. Kicks4Kids collected more than 100 pairs of cleats and more than 200 jerseys. “The most rewarding part of founding this organization is seeing the smiles of the kids wearing the equipment we collected,” stated Kevin. Rehan agrees. “When we saw the kids at Yalla get new shoes and when we were sent pictures of kids in Haiti with their new gear, we felt that through a simple act, we made a difference,” said Rehan. Kicks4Kids continues to conduct local drives with soccer clubs in San Diego. According to Kevin, one of their next big projects is to hold an equipment drive for children in Columbia. Rehan and Kevin attend Del Norte High School and enjoy the many academic, athletic, and extracurricular opportunities at the school. English literature, calculus, and U.S. history are among Rehan’s favorite subjects, as he loves the analytical problem-solving skills required in math, but also enjoys expressing his creativity through
liberal arts. He is a voracious reader and loves listening to music and going to concerts. Kevin’s favorite subjects at Del Norte are math, chemistry, and physics. He also loves being outdoors, enjoys hiking and exploring, and is actively involved in the youth group at St. Michael’s Church. Currently, Kicks4Kids has about 20 to 30 members who help with hosting drives, itemizing the collected gear, and delivering the equipment. For more information about Kicks4Kids and ways to become involved, email dnhskicks4kids@gmail.com. ¢

Pet Adoption on Wheels
From Scripps Ranch to the NASDAQ
Scripps Ranch-based Gilmore Orthodontics will be partnering with the San Diego Humane Society (SDHS) to host a mobile pet adoption outside the Gilmore Orthodontics office on March 24. The event will be held from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at 9870 Hibert St. and is open to the public. Attendees will be able to adopt a pet on the spot, as opposed to going to a shelter or pound, allowing for an easier and more natural interaction between animal and human. SDHS offers programs and services to prevent cruelty and neglect, provide medical care, and educate the community on the humane treatment of animals. To learn more about SDHS and other adoption events visit www.sdhumane.org.
Co-founder of the stock index firm EQM Indexes and Scripps Ranch resident Jane Edmondson was honored with ringing the opening bell on the NASDAQ exchange in Times Square, NYC late last year. The timing was to start the 2017 holiday online shopping season for their index, the EQM Online Retail Index, which tracks online retail stocks such as Amazon, Netflix, and Priceline. Jane started trading stocks as a hobby when she was just 13. She was able to fulfill her lifelong dream of not just ringing the bell, but also being on stage in the NASDAQ studio and appearing on the digital billboard in Times Square. “I am so happy I got to experience it. It was one for the bucket list for sure,” said Jane.
11th Annual Taste of the Ranch The Scripps Ranch High School (SRHS) Foundation will present the 11th Annual Taste of the Ranch on April 7 at the Hotel Karlan in Carmel Mountain Ranch from 6 to 11 p.m. Taste of the Ranch has brought together the parents of past, present, and future Falcons. The event has raised valuable funds in the past to continue the SRHS tradition of excellence. More than 300 guests attended last year’s Taste of the Ranch, which raised more than $23,000 that was given directly given to the SRHS athletic teams and academic clubs. Funds raised this year will go to improving athletics and academics at SRHS, as well as provide new books and supplies, improvements in technology, and more. This year, the event will include dinner, dancing, live music, a silent auction, and more. For more information and to buy tickets visit www.tasteoftheranch.com.
Gifts for Young Cancer Patients During this past holiday season, District Five Councilmember Mark Kersey and Scripps Ranch families united with the Becky’s Gift Toy Drive at University of the California San Diego (UCSD) Moores Cancer Center to deliver more than 200 toys for children ages 1 to 16 who underwent cancer treatment. Becky’s Gift began in 2009 when Scripps Ranch residents Becky Walton and Christie Jackson witnessed the difficulties of patients not fully experiencing the holidays while undergoing cancer treatment. “It (was) my pleasure to partner with grassroots toy drives like Becky’s Gift to collect and donate toys, making Christmas a little better for these families,” said Kersey. Becky’s Gift collected more than 1,500 toys this past holiday season, which were distributed among three cancer centers – UCSD Moores Cancer Center, The Oncology Associates of San Diego, and South County Hematology and Oncology Center.
Easter at the Farmers Market The Easter bunny will be making its 17th annual appearance at the Scripps Ranch Farmers Market on Saturday, March 31 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The bunny will be taking pictures with kids and handing out Easter eggs. Attendees will be able to enjoy an obstacle course, face painting, a caricature artist, live music, and more! With more than 65 vendors for arts and crafts, flowers, jewelry, and fresh produce, as well as plenty of breakfast and lunch options, this Easter will be fun for the whole family. Regular Farmers Market hours are from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. every Saturday, rain or shine, at 10380 Spring Canyon Rd. For more information visit www.srfm.org.
Bench Project Serves Hundreds in Mexico Local nonprofit Sustainable Surplus was recently tasked with finding a new home for 150 used bus stop benches from the City of San Diego. The benches, which were headed to Miramar Landfill, are made of difficult-to-recycle and non-decomposing fiberglass material. When no use was found for the benches in San Diego, Sustainable Surplus CEO Sue Prelozni reached out to Adolfo Delgado, Binational Coalition of Nonprofits (BCN) partner and Executive Director of the Comité Binacional Unidos por la Niñez (CBUN) in Mexico. With Adolfo’s help, the benches were refurbished, repurposed, and distributed to several cities throughout Mexico, where they will be used in parks, churches, schools, and community centers. BCN was founded in 2017 to facilitate the handling of donated items that cannot be reused or repurposed locally, resulting in at least 12 crossborder donations in the past year. Rob Schupp, Director of Marketing and Communications for the Metropolitan Transit System, said, “This is a great example of agencies coming together to find solutions that are good for the planet.” For more information visit www.sustainablesurplus.org.

oing to the dentist can be a scary experience for children and, therefore, stressful for their parents. The Super Dentists, San Diego’s largest and most trusted pediatric dentistry and orthodontic office, hopes to make going to the dentist a positive experience for the whole family. For over 20 years, led by Dr. Nazli Keri (also known as the Tooth Keri) and Dr. Kami Hoss (also known as Dr. HaveOneSuperSmile), this team of exceptional pediatric dentists and orthodontists has fought cavities and crooked teeth. “By providing out-of-this-world, kid-centered dental care,” said Dr. Hoss, “the Super Dentists are saving the world one smile at a time.” 32 • 92131MAGAZINE.COM • March | April 2018

OUTPOST SUMMER CAMPS
N
ow more than ever, children need to be away from their devices for extended periods of time, and there is nothing better than a summer day-camp experience to make this a reality. Outpost Summer Camps was founded in 2001 and serves over 1,500 children every summer, completely outdoors and screen-free. The Outpost experience has three pillars that parents have loved for over 15 summers: door-to-door transportation, traditional camp activities (think MUD!), and exceptional, well-trained staff that ensure a quality experience for each child. Outpost is open to children ages 3 to 14, and according to Owner/Director Stuart Jones, “Each of our camps has exciting, age-appropriate activities for the different age groups, but all share in the philosophy of creative, spontaneous fun facilitated by the counselors and campers.” The three-week sessions are what make Outpost so unique. Stuart explained, “By staying longer at camp, children of all temperaments have enough time to learn names, get completely comfortable with routines, and make and keep new friends.” Another way the camps stand out is with their commitment to safety. Outpost Summer Camps has been continuously accredited by the American Camp Association since inception and operates under permit from the County of San Diego as an Organized Camp. Stuart and his wife Kelly both have graduate degrees in psychology and bring years of long-term child development experience to Outpost. Additionally, the duo hires, trains, and retains their director team from their best counselors, who have invested 8 to 10 years at the camps and are specialized in their programs. ORAL SURGERY PROFILE
Putting Patient Care First Boulder Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Offers Patients Optimal Results in a Caring Environment by JENNIFER FRAKES | photos provided by Boulder OMS
A
t Boulder OMS, patient comfort and care are at the core of the practice. “Dr. Albert Lin and Dr. Robert Gramins take the time to understand each patient’s needs and offer services that deliver optimal results. We treat each patient in a relaxed and caring environment and utilize the latest techniques and treatment options,” explained Kelly Zielinski, marketing and public relations manager for Boulder OMS. Originally founded in 1972, Boulder OMS is the oldest and most established oral and facial surgery practice in the greater Poway area. With a track record of exceptional results and the goal of being the most trusted and respected oral and maxillofacial surgery practice in San Diego, Dr. Lin and Dr. Gramins are committed to providing the highest standards of care. Boulder OMS treats a wide range of patients, from preteens to older adults and everyone in between. The practice specializes in wisdom tooth extraction, dental implants, facial trauma, oral pathology, corrective jaw surgery, Botox and fillers, and dental alveolar surgery. “Our doctors spent an additional four years in school for their oral and maxillofacial surgery residency. This makes them uniquely qualified to perform surgery on the face and in the mouth,” stated Zielinski. Both Dr. Lin and
Dr. Gramins are Fellows of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons and are board certified as Diplomates by the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. They are also among a select group of oral and maxillofacial surgeons that are licensed to perform facial cosmetic surgery in the state of California. Boulder OMS is an accredited surgery center and adheres to strict guidelines for safety and patient care as set forth by the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC). Dr. Lin and Dr. Gramins voluntarily had the practice accredited by the AAAHC, a process which includes thorough onsite reviews of policies and practices by expert surveyors every two years. According to Zielinski, this is the highest level of certification and ensures that Boulder OMS is at the forefront of technology, safety, and patient care. Dr. Lin and Dr. Gramins are also dedicated to giving back to the community. They are the oral and facial surgeons to the San Diego Gulls and actively volunteer their skills and expertise to the Oral Cancer Foundation, Las Patronas, The Ronald McDonald House, and other local charities. A Night of Wonder
S
cripps Ranch High School had its dance program’s first performance of the school year Jan. 18 through 20. The show was called A Night of Wonder and was choreographed to all Stevie Wonder songs, a few of which included “Isn’t She Lovely,” “Superstition,” “Ebony and Ivory,” and “Signed, Sealed, Delivered.” There were four shows in total, and many students, faculty, and family attended. There was a variety of dancers ranging from beginners to advanced students. There were physical education dancers who were mostly sophomores, and there were fine art performers who ranged from
sophomores to seniors. All dancers were in at least three dances, but the fine art students choreographed their own and others had the opportunity to audition for outside dances created over winter break by the teacher. Trisha Camp, the dance teacher, choreographed over 10 dances starting from the beginning of the year. There were many types of dances performed, such as lyrical, jazz, tap, hip hop, and modern. The dance program consists of two dance classes with both PE dancers and fine art dancers. The mix of students helps give the beginners someone to look at and
ask for help on choreography. There were dances by groups of all PE performers or all fine art performers and a mix of both. The performers worked hard the week before the show to get lights and tech working and practiced on the stage. Each performance had a little bit of a twist but all the same dancers and music. The next dance show will be at the end of May, so come and support the dance program. ¢

R E A L E S TAT E W AT C H
Confusion Slowing the Local Market by SCOTT VOAK
W
hile San Diego as a whole is experiencing a slight slowdown in real estate activity (a reduction of 4.5% in sales year-over-year), the North County inland market (Poway Unified School District, Scripps Ranch, and Mira Mesa) is seeing a much more pronounced lull in the market to start 2018 (a 14.1% reduction). I believe there are three main reasons for this, and all of them revolve around future uncertainty. The first two affect the upper end market throughout the county. Those factors are the new tax law and recent volatility in the stock market and interest rates. We know the new tax law is going to hurt California homeowners, but until people meet with their accountants to prepare 2017 taxes, they probably won’t have a firm idea of how much it will impact them. This type of uncertainty causes people to become conservative and put off major purchases like housing. Hopefully, once people know what the increase will be next year, they will be more comfortable making a move in the housing market. You can count on the fact that the stock market is going to be more volatile and interest rates are generally going to move up. While that is not helpful, the one thing you can do if you are considering a home purchase is get your down payment out of the stock market. There’s nothing worse than finding your dream home on Sunday and watching
your down payment disappear on Monday if the market falls. The third area of uncertainty affects us more in PUSD. That is the uncertainty surrounding the attempted takeover of Qualcomm by Broadcom. Poway School District is a magnet for engineers who want their kids to get a good education. Two years ago, when there was an announced layoff at Qualcomm, the local housing market really slowed down until layoff notices went out, and as soon as people knew they still had jobs, the market took off. I have talked to several of my Qualcomm clients and they are indeed sitting on the sidelines until the situation is resolved. Given that uncertainty over taxes will likely last into April and the Qualcomm situation may take another 30 to 60 days to resolve itself (as of this writing), I anticipate a slower market through March and then a very strong May through July. ¢
