Horsing Around

P U B L I S HE R

Derrick Breaux

I

’m from Southeast Texas, so I’ve been on my fair share of horses growing up. My good friend had a couple of horses that we would saddle up and ride to the levee. And no, I’m not making this stuff up – there really was a levee about a mile from my childhood home. I’m pretty sure that people have written songs about this. When I met my wife about 20 years ago, I learned that she grew up with horses. Over the years, she shared many stories of riding on the endless trails in Poway – many of which have long been taken over by developments and homes. The time that she spent with her horses growing up made a lasting impression that she holds close to her heart. Our youngest daughter, Audrey, started taking riding lessons a couple of years ago. Although she has traditionally split her extracurricular hours between soccer, softball, and music, we noticed that she quickly developed a strong passion for horseback riding. Last year Audrey approached us with the idea of adopting or rescuing a horse. At first, we thought the idea was absurd. But this didn’t deter her. While she could have accepted our decision and moved on, instead, she began developing a plan and documenting everything that needed to take place in order to accomplish her goal. She presented her plan to us – which included her own financial and time commitments. And as you may have guessed by reading this and seeing the photo, Audrey did find a horse that needed a new home. In fact, she actually found two horses (eight-year-old brothers from different mothers). Thankfully the horses had not been abused, but they had been neglected. Unfortunately, they were left in their stalls at a facility in Los Angeles with very little socializing and human attention for the past year and a half. Little did these two horses know, they were about to get the full attention of a very determined and dedicated 13-year-old girl. Over the past couple of months, we have watched these horses transform from nervous and shy creatures to warm and loving family members. I have observed a beautiful bond develop between my daughter and these giant animals that is very difficult to describe. Although I was skeptical at first, what started out to be a project for my daughter and wife has turned into a family affair. It has been refreshing to take an hour here and an hour there to join them at the stables. Time seems to slow down while we are there. Technology is optional at best. It is very tranquil and therapeutic. But most importantly, I get to watch and be involved while memories are made that we will carry with us for the rest of our lives.

HIGH SCHOOL SENIOR RYAN O’TOOLE ACES THE ACT

ollege entrance exams are a rite of passage for high school students across the U.S. Right here in Scripps Ranch, Ryan O’Toole earned a perfect score of 36 on the ACT, an impressive feat to say the least. “My only preparation was studying for the SAT subjects test, so when I scored a 36 on the ACT, I was pleasantly surprised,” related Ryan modestly. In order to achieve a perfect 36 composite score on the ACT, a student must earn all possible points in the four subject areas – English, reading, math, and science.

“I am looking forward to developing my skills in computer programming and to being more independent in my studies.” As a senior at High Tech High in Point Loma, Ryan cites math as his favorite subject. “The concepts are easy for me to grasp quickly, and I enjoy solving complex problems,” stated Ryan. His interest in problem-solving carries over to his hobbies as well. He enjoys action-focused video games that involve puzzles and strategic thinking. Ryan also finds time to pursue his other passions – hiking, cycling, and body boarding. Ryan’s family has lived in Scripps Ranch since 1996. He, his parents, Bill and Debbie, and two sisters, Sara and Hayley, enjoy the variety of activities the community has to offer, as well as the nice 10 • 92131MAGAZINE.COM • March | April 2019

weather. “Living in Scripps Ranch is like living in a small town, rather than a big city. My family and I especially like spending time at Lake Miramar and Wahine Kai Shave Ice,” shared Ryan. Looking to the future, Ryan will attend a four-year university in the fall to study computer science and/or engineering. “Right now my first choices are University of California San Diego and Caltech. Wherever I attend college, I am looking forward to developing my skills in computer programming and to being more independent in my studies,” revealed Ryan. After college, he hopes to work as a programmer for his father’s information technology and services company. “I worked for my dad last summer, and I really enjoyed the challenge,” he stated. With his work ethic, talent, and intellectual skills, there is no doubt that Ryan will achieve his goals as he prepares for the future. 

DIAMOND GATEWAY WOMEN’S ORGANIZATION CELEBRATES 20 YEARS photo by PortrArt Creations

S

ince its founding in 1998, Diamond Gateway Women’s Organization (DGWO) has provided a warm welcome and close-knit community for women in Rancho Bernardo, Rancho Peñasquitos, Poway, and Scripps Ranch. “To be part of an organization that is collectively kind and fun while giving so much back to their community is really cool and inspiring,” shared Nora Nido, DGWO President. Nora joined the organization in 2015 after being invited to a meeting by a client. “Everyone was so nice, and I enjoyed it so much I kept going!” Originally formed as a continuation of Welcome Wagon when the older group disbanded, DGWO meets every month in Rancho Peñasquitos for community service, educational speakers, and connecting with friends.

“It has evolved into meetings with a variety of programs such as guest speakers on current events and topics covering everything from health to being a private investigator or hall of fame songwriter,” Nora said. “Others included authors, theater performers, musicians, or dancers.” DGWO members have also formed spinoff groups for games, crafting, gardening, and attending plays or movies. DGWO’s primary fundraiser each year is a spring luncheon, scheduled for Saturday, March 16 at Carmel Mountain Ranch Estate. Proceeds go towards DGWO’s work for Friends and Family Community Connection, Operation America Cares, and Honor Flight. DGWO also supports San Diego Food Bank and America Cares. For more about the luncheon contact Dael Kiesler at daelnk612@yahoo.com. For more about membership contact Roxie Stalter at 858-538-8842. 

A DENTAL HOME DR. ELLEN IM PEDIATRIC DENTISTRY AND ORTHODONTICS PROVIDES FAMILY-FRIENDLY TRUST

by LINDA FRABL | photos provided by Dr. Ellen Im Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics

D

r. Ellen Im Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics, in operation since 2014 when it took over the Poway Kids Dental Care location, is focused on family-friendliness. As a mother of three children herself, owner Dr. Ellen Im emphasized, “The inspiration behind my practice came from the perspective of being a mother. I wanted a practice where parents would feel comfortable bringing their children.” Providing that comfort level involved developing a sense of security with her young clients and their parents. Dr. Im elaborated, “Families trust me as an ethical, caring doctor. They know they’ll be treated well by the dental team and given all their options on care, appointments, and finances. We’ll ultimately establish for them a dental home where the child can grow and mature as an individual.” One way that Dr. Im’s office allows the child to grow and mature is by offering “comfort menus.” These menus allow patients to select their own choice for: protective eyewear, a movie to watch, and an anxiety-reducing item (stress balls, warm blankets, stuffed animals, etc.). Even though her office has these homey touches, Dr. Im doesn’t compromise when it comes to modern technology options such as tooth-colored fillings, digital x-rays, laser dentistry, and even nitrous oxide or sedation dentistry if necessary. There is also a board certified orthodontist on site, Dr. Torin Chenard, who treats both children and adults with options such as interceptive orthodontics, Invisalign, and traditional braces. 14 • 92131MAGAZINE.COM • March | April 2019

Dr. Im spent many years providing dental care to the disadvantaged population while working in the greater Washington D.C./ Baltimore area after graduating from the University of Maryland Dental School. Now she specializes in oral health treatment for children ranging from infants to young adults, including those with special needs. As a Diplomate of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry (ABPD), Dr. Im’s credentials verify her as a dentist who has successfully completed voluntary examinations, and who demonstrates specialized knowledge and skills. Immersing her business into neighborhood outreach activities, Dr. Im and her dental team give fun and interactive oral hygiene presentations at local schools and

SHE IS THOROUGH AND TAKES THE TIME TO BRING COMFORT TO EACH CHILD AND FAMILY.” – JENNIFER offer free dental screenings and complimentary hygiene kits to the students. In addition, the office sponsors multiple elementary schools and sports teams in Poway and the surrounding areas. It’s no wonder that Dr. Ellen Im Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics has as its office motto, “Building a healthy community one smile at a time.” 

COMMUNITY VOLUNTEER

“When in doubt, go to the library.” – J.K. Rowling

W

hen Joan Reese was recruited to volunteer by the first branch manager at the Scripps Ranch Library 16 years ago, her youngest child was a high school senior and set to leave the nest for college. “I guess I was looking for something to fill the void,” Joan said. Today, she continues to feed her love of books as a member of the Scripps Ranch Friends of the Library (SRFOL). Originally she was the publicity chair – she’s continued in that role – but has also served as VP and president. “A number of years ago, there was an urgent need for someone to take over coordination of Grace’s Book Nook, which is SRFOL’s largest ongoing fundraiser and essential to our efforts to raise funds to support our library here in Scripps Ranch,” she said. Almost nine years later, Joan’s still running it, but they’ve been able to assemble a loyal team of core volunteers to handle the day-to-day management, “in addition to the group of dedicated volunteers who cover two-and-a-half-hour shifts weekly or on alternate weeks,” Joan explained. Joan has become increasingly involved with library advocacy over the past few years, and truly believes that the mission of the Friends and of the library, along with public education, are the pillars of democracy. “Our public libraries help to level the playing field, bringing books, music, movies, computer/internet access, including a host of online databases and resources, as well as quality programs to everybody, regardless of age or socioeconomic status.” Since Scripps Ranch Volunteer Joan its inception, the all-volunteer Friends organization has raised Advocates for the Library hundreds of thousands of dollars in support of the library. “It’s a fact that literally half of the new books and media acquired by our library each and every year have been made possible by SRFOL,” Joan confirmed. If she was granted a wish, it would be for every library user to join the Friends. By occupation, Joan is a pediatrician specializing in neurodevelopmental disabilities. Educated on the East Coast – she has a Bachelor’s from Brown University, M.D. from Yale, and a Master’s of Public Health from Johns Hopkins – Joan is now retired from full-time employment. She continues her service both ‘doctoring’ on a limited basis and through volunteerism as a Friend. In addition to her involvement with SRFOL, Joan is also the President of the Friends of the San Diego Public Library. “I try to participate in the community as my schedule permits with Sustainable Scripps Ranch and the Welcome Club,” she said. Above all, Joan is very proud of her three children, who grew up in Scripps Ranch and photo by PortrArt Creations are all Ph.D.s in various fields of science. They are also readers and library users. 

EXCITING THINGS ARE HAPPENING AT STUDIO WEST IN 2019!

O

ne of the busiest recording studios south of LA is located here in Rancho Bernardo. Although Studio West has been around since the 1980s, 2018 was one of the best years ever, according to studio owner Peter Dyson. There certainly were some big names in the studio in 2018 – artists like Lauryn Hill, actors such as Oscarwinners Richard Dreyfuss and Alan Arkin, along with world-famous John Cena. But Dyson is equally passionate about the local artists and community groups who work out of the studio. “I regard Studio West as a resource for the local music and creative community,” said Dyson. “This May will be the sixth year we have hosted the RB

Chorale for their scholarship auditions for high school students planning on studying music in college, and we gave tours to almost 500 middle and high school students last year who want to see what goes on in a working studio. Teachers can request a tour by calling or emailing the studio.” In addition, last year Studio West saw two strong trends continue – more video and more electronic music. “Video is so important to the way we consume media nowadays and over the last few years we have really built up our competency for in-studio video shoots,” said Dyson. “We’ve also seen more electronic music production sessions this past year. I love pianos,

guitars, and drums, but the computer is now an instrument too. We enjoy teaching people how to create music electronically just as much as we enjoy teaching more traditional recording techniques.” For more information about the educational programs offered by Studio West, go to www.studiowest.com and be sure to keep an eye on their Facebook page as you never know who might be in town! 

C

alifornia All-Stars Cheer (CAS) began its story 18 years ago in North County San Diego. With more than 1,000 athletes throughout six locations – San Marcos, the Bay Area, Las Vegas, Ventura, Ontario, and Scottsdale, AZ – CAS has worked its way to offering the most competitive cheer program in the state of California, gaining international recognition along the way as 12-time World Champions. “All-Stars encompasses all the fun aspects about cheerleading, including dance, stunts, bonding with friends, and gaining confidence and skill through performances. Building the children from the inside out is what we do, because we focus on them as

a whole,” said Tannaz Kirichkow, Owner of CAS. “Our goal is to make sure our kids gain a strong sense of self confidence that will carry on for the rest of their lives.” CAS offers tumbling camps in the summer, which focus on tumbling techniques for beginners, intermediate, and advanced levels. The camps can last two or three days and are three hours per day. Camps are open to both boys and girls. CAS provides a sense of work ethic and life lessons in each of its classes, including a sense of bonding and camaraderie for cheerleaders who travel to national and international competitions. “People come to California All-Stars for top-quality coaching and family atmosphere,”

explained Tannaz. “Life lessons, core values, and athletic excellence come hand-inhand. We love to see our kids succeed on and off the floor!” CAS’s list of awards and recognitions includes 400 National Titles, Grand Champions, Program Champions, Innovative Choreography Awards, Judges Choice Awards, Paid Bids to the USASF Cheerleading Worlds, 2009 through 2013 World Champions, IALC Champions, 2010 through 2014 NCA National Champions, three silver medals at the 2008 Cheerleading Worlds, and 2013 Summit Champions. Marilee Chaney of North County said, “CAS is about positive attitudes. From the ‘can do’ approach toward all athletes to seeing the staff enthusiastically hug a cheerleader when she gets a new tumbling skill – from the beginning, the message has been ‘you are capable, and you are welcome here.’” With a trained and energetic staff, spacious gym, and professional instruction, CAS has something for every budding cheerleader out there! Tryouts for new teams will be held May 13, 14, and 15. To learn more about camps, classes, and clinics at CAS, visit www.CaliforniaAllStars.com/SanMarcos. 

OUTPOST SUMMER CAMPS

N

ow more than ever, children need to be away from their devices for extended periods of time, and there is nothing better than a summer day camp experience to make this a reality. Outpost Summer Camps was founded in 2001 and serves over 1,500 children every summer, completely outdoors and screen-free. The Outpost experience has three pillars that parents have loved for over 15 summers: “old-fashioned” camp activities (think MUD!), door-to-door transportation for most families, and exceptional, well-trained staff that ensure a quality experience for each child. Outpost is open to children ages 3 to 14, and according to Owner/Director Stuart Jones, “Each of our camps has exciting, age-appropriate activities for the different age groups, but all share in the philosophy of creative, spontaneous fun facilitated by the counselors and campers.” The three-week sessions are what make Outpost so unique. Stuart explained, “By staying longer at camp, children of all temperaments have enough time to learn names, get completely comfortable with routines, and make and keep new friends.” Another way the camps stand out is with their commitment to safety. Outpost Summer Camps has been continuously accredited by the American Camp Association since inception and operates under permit from the County of San Diego as an Organized Camp. Stuart and his wife Kelly, a clinical psychologist, bring years of child development experience to Outpost. Additionally, the duo hires, trains, and retains their director team from their best counselors, who have invested 8 to 10 years at the camps and are specialized in their programs. Falcons Prepare to Get “Lost at Sea”

W

ith finals over and winter blues turning into spring sunshine, the Scripps Ranch High student body is eagerly awaiting the upcoming Spring Formal Dance. On March 16, Falcons will dance the night away at the Birch Aquarium in La Jolla. “We are very excited for this dance,” ASB President Jerry Yang commented. “It’s the first dance that has been held off campus in a long time, so ASB is determined to make it a memorable night.” To reflect the setting of the aquarium, the theme is “Lost at Sea.” In addition to the sea creatures floating nearby, there will be a wave of food choices, including chicken tenders, empanadas, cupcakes, and chocolate-covered strawberries. ASB hopes that this dance will be sea-cessful. “We think a lot of students will come to this dance,” Yang continued. “It’s going to be at a cool location and be lots of fun.” However, the dance is more than just about having a good

time. If there’s a large student attendance, it will provide the school administration with a good example as to how future off-campus dances will function, and encourage more dances to be held off campus. “I’m excited for this dance. The last one was really fun, even though it was in the gym. I’m excited to buy a new dress and see the aquarium at night,” Kayla Swift, a junior, stated. “I’m hoping a group of friends and I can go,” she continued. “ASB put a lot of work into planning the event, and I want to support them and the school.” ASB promises the night will be a boatload of fun. Hope to “sea” you there, Falcons! 
