A Sixteen-Year-Old Son
Y
esterday was my son’s 16th birthday. Peyton’s the middle child and we’ve crossed these types of milestones before, but it’s still a unique experience. We’ve been his personal taxi driver for years. Sure, it gets old driving him from school to practice and then to another practice, but at the end of the day we really do enjoy it. But that is all about to change. Tomorrow he takes his driver’s test. Fingers crossed. For his birthday party, my son decided that he wanted to invite some of his friends over to the house to hang and then go out to dinner at a “fun” restaurant. We limited the number to 10 and set the location for Gen Korean BBQ – a fun all-you-can-eat restaurant in Mira Mesa where you grill your own food at the table. Peyton is now at that age where some of his friends are driving and others will be driving soon. The non-drivers loaded up into our cars and the legal drivers decided to take their own wheels to the restaurant (even though we had plenty of seats in our cars). Apparently driving more cars than needed is just what you do when you get your license. The freedom of the road. Independence! With a party of 12 (yep, mom and dad tagged along to hang out and pay the bill), we had a blast eating all types of Korean meat. Peyton’s friends gave the menu a run for its money! And the restaurant staff was great in announcing his birthday over the microphone to the entire restaurant. It was a perfect birthday dinner. The night couldn’t end without a trip to the local ice cream shop. We loaded up our caravan of cars and invaded Baskin Robbins. The kids were a bit loud and playing around in the store. Everyone was laughing and having a good time. We all ordered our treats and decided to eat in the car since it was getting late. And that’s when something special happened. An older gentleman and his wife followed us out of Baskin Robbins and knocked on my car window just before I was about to back out of the parking spot. Not knowing what he was about to say (after all, the kids were a bit of a hurricane inside Baskin Robbins), I rolled down my window and braced myself. He said, “My wife and I just wanted you to know how special it is to see two parents spending time with their kids and their friends like you are doing.” I thanked him for going out of his way to let me know their thoughts. I spent the next 20 minutes on the drive home thinking about the man’s words. The night was definitely special. And I’m thankful that he took the time to share his thoughts with me. It would have been easier for him to not knock on my window in the parking lot. But in doing so, his words encouraged me to reflect and take it all in. Thank you, sir, for going out of your way. It was a good night with good friends. Happy birthday, Peyton! Thanks for being you.

S
cripps Ranch High School senior Dylan Darwish began acting when he was about 13 years old. He modeled for clothing companies when he was younger, and eventually the theatrical side of his agency reached out to see if he was interested in pursuing acting. “I went in for an audition, and the rest is history,” he said. “My favorite aspect of acting is influencing the audience with the way you tell a story. The feeling of being able to make hundreds of people laugh by simply saying a line is indescribable.” Currently, Dylan is preparing to star as Danny in the Falcon Playhouse production of Grease. “I’ve been listening to a lot of ‘50s music and watching professional recordings of Grease that I find online. I draw inspiration from others and use that inspiration to make something unique to me,” explained Dylan, whose past roles include Ponyboy Curtis in The Outsiders, George Wilson in The Great Gatsby, and Moonface Martin in Anything Goes, among others. Dylan joined the Falcon Playhouse his freshman year, as the theater program was being rebuilt at Scripps Ranch High School. While Dylan was already a working actor in Los Angeles – he’s guest starred in an episode of Criminal Minds! – he was passionate about learning and performing in live theater productions. Although he takes part in the productions after school, it 8 • 92131MAGAZINE.COM • March | April 2020
is theater class where he learns and tries new aspects of acting. “My theater teacher, Mr. Garcia, is definitely my inspiration. He pushes everyone in the program to better themselves and helps us strive to run a professional theater with young actors, not just a typical high school theater program,” revealed Dylan. “He promotes such a positive rehearsal space that you always leave the class feeling better than when you walked in.” Dylan also currently serves on the student theater board at SRHS as the publicist. He’s in charge of promoting the shows through all facets of marketing and publicity, from social media to putting posters up around campus. As he looks toward college next year, Dylan is excited to pursue opportunities in theater, education, and computers and technology. “I’ve also taken a few engineering courses in high school and hope to take more in college. I’m the tech guru in my family,” he said with a laugh. Grease performances will be held at Scripps Ranch High School March 12-14 at 6:30 p.m. For more information and tickets visit www.falconplayhouse.com. ¢

ocal FIRST Robotics students celebrated a number of successes late last year, winning multiple awards with their competitive robot. Mechanical Advantage Team 16884 finished in first place at the Dec. 7 Tucson, AZ FIRST Tech Challenge Qualifier, along with alliance partner The ROBO Warriors Team 15652. Mechanical Advantage also received the Control Award for programming. Their performance at this event earned them the chance to compete in the Arizona State Championship in Flagstaff, AZ in February. The team then closed out the year at the Central Phoenix Qualifying Tournament in Phoenix, AZ on Dec. 21, earning the first place Design Award and second place Connect Award. These awards
were hard-fought, and Mechanical Advantage had to overcome a major electrical failure during the event. Mechanical Advantage includes team members from multiple local schools: Rohan Bosworth and Madalyn Nguyen from Poway High School; Manjusri Gobiraj, Kaila Rosing, and Christina Schierbeck from Scripps Ranch High School; P.J. Wetherell and Reily Hopkins from Westview High School; Rohin Sood from Oak Valley Middle School; and Arya Bosworth from Black Mountain Middle School. Rohan, Madalyn, and P.J. serve as team captains, and this was the team’s first competitive year in the FIRST Tech Challenge. In addition to competing, Mechanical Advantage mentors younger FIRST Robotics teams, volunteers, and collaborates with sister organization Team Spyder 1622. GIRL SCOUT TROOP 4549 USES COOKIE PROCEEDS FOR GOOD
G
irl Scout Troop 4549, comprised of girls from Dingeman Elementary, Ellen Browning Scripps Elementary, and St. Gregory the Great Catholic School, works together each year to sell cookies by sending marketing videos to their friends and family members, walking their neighborhoods to sell door-to-door, and selling at cookie booths throughout the community. The girls use their cookie proceeds to fund educational activities throughout the year. Recently, the troop spent a weekend at Camp Winacka in Julian with other troops from Scripps Ranch, where they learned about and celebrated unsung heroines, and spent time crafting, hiking, and rock climbing. The girls have also used their proceeds to visit Butterfly Farms in Encinitas and participate in a workshop at the Fleet Science Center. The girls also use their cookie proceeds to help others in the community. When they were Brownies, the girls used a portion of their proceeds to buy approximately 100 books for patients at Rady Children’s Hospital. They also purchased a hockey set for students at the Monarch School in San Diego. This year, the troop will be donating some of their cookie proceeds to Feeding San Diego’s BackPack program, which aims to help meet the nutritional needs of low-income students over the weekends and school holidays. F
or Savannah Philyaw, creative inspiration is found in all sorts of places, from her close-knit Scripps Ranch community to the treehouse in her yard. Since her first solo performance almost a decade ago at the age of 15, Savannah has been playing music at block parties, house parties, concerts in the park, and most recently, in the recording studio. Not long ago, Savannah recorded and released her first full-length album, A Whisper in the Wind, showcasing her self-described folk-pop musical style, “fusing acoustic elements with touches of country and an imaginative spirit.” She enjoyed the recording process with her producer, Joel Piper, and compared the experience to a big art project. As much as she loved the collaborative nature of it all, Savannah also recognizes the importance of following her intuition. “Writing the album was a great exercise in following my own instincts and trying my best to write what was in my soul, rather than writing what I think other people will want to hear,” she shared. “Of course, with the hope that the truths within me would resonate with others and inspire them to feel something good.” Savannah’s favorite thing about music is songwriting, and has co-written music with multiplatinum songwriter Michael Natter, who is best known for writing “I Won’t Give Up” with Jason Mraz, as well as Jack Tempchin, who wrote “Peaceful Easy Feeling” and “Already Gone” for the Eagles. “I love how creating a song is like grabbing a little idea out of the air and making it into something that expresses an emotion,” she said. “It’s fascinating that a song can then draw that emotion out of others and bring people together.” Savannah’s songs have been played in TV shows like Teen Titans Go! and Unikitty, and she was also recently nominated for Best Pop Album in the 2020 San Diego Music Awards. When she’s not writing songs or singing, Savannah enjoys spending time with people she loves, going to the beach for sunsets, embroidering, collecting crystals, drawing, animating, decorating, and growing plants, fruits, and vegetables. She also likes to help the families in her neighborhood with kids, pets, and musical endeavors. “I spend lots of time fueling imagination among the kids in the community through music, art projects, planting seeds, and making fairy gardens together,” she shared. Scripps Ranch has always been an integral part of her journey. “My neighbors have been my chosen family for my entire life and we have all seen so much together through the years,” she acknowledged. ¢

Improv Show Wraps up Second Semester
he Scripps Ranch Improv Club put on their first show of the year on Jan. 31. The performance was a big hit among SRHS students and staff, and good comic relief for stressed Falcons finishing up finals. Members of the improv team recalled that very little preparation goes into these shows, as everything said on stage is unrehearsed, and simply made up by team members on the spot. This challenge is what gives improv its exciting element of chance and spontaneity. James Poonoosamy is a senior in improv and participated in the recent performance. When asked about the most challenging part of an improv show, he stated, “It is getting around the idea that you have to be funny on stage. That makes you nervous, but when you just try to have fun, you end up being funny.” The improv members have to always keep this in mind while on stage to deliver the most relaxed and natural performance possible.
Improv member Luke Lima also participated in the Jan. 31 show. He’s been part of the club for nearly two years, and said, “My co-captain, Gennie Flores, and I had a lot of fun hosting.” Lima mentioned that some other performers – Maia Fram, Roy Shalev, and Amari Portis – also had a good time participating in the show. Ary Behan, a member of SRHS theater, supported his fellow performers by attending the show, and recalled, “It was a great show! It’s really cool to see my friends putting themselves out there and having fun performing.” The next Improv show is scheduled for March 19 and 20, and the team is expecting another comical experience for all who attend. ¢

St. Michael’s School Presents Footloose
New School Principals
St. Michael’s School students in kindergarten through eighth grade will be performing Getting to Know Footloose the Musical. The production tells the story of a teenage boy, Ren, moving from Chicago to a small farming town, where he runs into oppressive local edicts – including a ban on dancing. These strict rules are thanks to the same local preacher whose daughter Ren falls for. Ren convinces his friends to participate in a school dance competition in order to win her over and revolutionize the town. Performances will be held May 7 through 10, and tickets will be available beginning April 1 for $10 each. Find tickets at www.showtix4u.com, and learn more by contacting theater@smspoway.org.

alifornia All-Stars Cheer (CAS) began its story 19 years ago in North County San Diego. With more than 1,000 athletes throughout six locations – San Marcos, the Bay Area, Las Vegas, Ventura, Ontario, and Scottsdale, AZ – CAS has worked its way to offering the most competitive cheer program in the state of California, gaining international recognition along the way as 12-time World Champions. “All-Stars encompasses all the fun aspects about cheerleading, including dance, stunts, bonding with friends, and gaining confidence and skill through performances. Building the children from the inside out is what we do, because we focus on them as a whole,” said Tannaz Kirichkow, Owner of CAS. “Our goal is to make sure our kids gain a strong sense of self-confidence that will carry on for the rest of their lives.” CAS offers tumbling camps in the summer, which focus on tumbling techniques for beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels. The camps can last two or three days and are three hours per day. Camps are open to both boys and girls. CAS provides a sense of work ethic and life lessons in each of its classes, including a sense of bonding and camaraderie for cheerleaders who travel to national and international competitions.

Outpost Summer Camps
O
utpost Summer Camps provides valuable opportunities for children to connect with each other face to face and away from screens. Founded in 2001, the camp serves over 1,500 children every summer completely outdoors and unplugged. The Outpost experience has three pillars that parents have loved for 18 summers: nature, fun, and exceptional staff! Nature is the vehicle through which children get to play collaboratively and creatively. Fun is experienced on a surface level through exciting games and on a deeper level through a sense of belonging and community. Exceptional staff lead small, consistent groups with a focus on friendships, special traditions, and an inclusive culture. Door-to-door transportation is included in the program fee and available to most families. Outpost serves children ages 3 to 14, and according to Dr. Kelly Jones, the camp’s owner and director: “Each of our camps has exciting, age-appropriate activities, and all share in the philosophy of creative, spontaneous adventures facilitated by the counselors and campers.” The three-week sessions and small, consistent groups are what make Outpost so impactful. Dr. Kelly explained, “By staying longer at camp, children of all temperaments have enough time to learn names, get comfortable with routines, and make and keep new friends.” The camps also stand out with their commitment to safety. Outpost Summer Camps has been continuously accredited by the American Camp Association since inception and operates under permit from the County of San Diego as an Organized Camp. Dr. Kelly, a clinical psychologist, and her husband Stuart bring years of child development experience to Outpost. Additionally, the duo hires, trains, and retains their director team from their best counselors, who have invested 10 to 15 years at the camps and are specialized in their programs. ith the growing popularity of STEAM programs in schools, many parents are turning to technology camps to keep their students entertained and engaged during summer months. CodeREV Kids is one of Southern California’s fastest growing tech camps, and according to Founder Evan Boorman, offers the only standards-aligned summer tech program that focuses on math and science. Evan explained, “I started CodeREV to answer the question so many students have: ‘Why? Why should I learn math, science, or engineering?’ In our project-based classes and curriculum, students automatically answer these questions for themselves, since they need to learn these topic areas to create the fun and amazing projects they build and code in camp.” CodeREV offers a variety of classes for kids ages 6 to 16 to appeal to all technology-based interests. Its MathCraft program uses the popular video game Minecraft to teach math, and its Adventures in Programming class covers 3D game design. Its most popular option, Minecraft Level Design & Engineering, applies STEAM concepts to building amazing contraptions inside Minecraft. With a total of 10 different classes to choose from, there is something for everyone at CodeREV. Evan has been teaching STEAM for 17 years, has created education software, and has started education technology companies. Evan’s partner, Chief Education Innovation Officer John Stuppy, Ph.D., holds a Master’s degree in Education Technology from Stanford and a Ph.D. in Education Reform from UCLA, and has been teaching and creating curriculum for coding aligned with math for three decades. Evan and John believe that their combined 50 years of experience, coupled with the most innovative teaching approaches in technology, are critical to bringing coding into mainstream education and preparing students for their future by getting them excited about using math, logic, and science. BEAUTIFUL BUTTERFLIES Reunite With Nature This Spring by SAMANTHA EDWARDS
W
ith the early vernal equinox this year (March 19), signs of spring are beginning to emerge in San Diego. You might notice the days getting slightly longer, flowers blooming from the earth, and animals and insects becoming more active – including butterflies! We’ve rounded up a few fun ways to learn more about these colorful creatures and welcome the official arrival of the season. ¢
BUTTERFLY JUNGLE March 21 – May 10 Open daily, 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. This popular exhibit at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park is a magical experience for children and adults alike. Get up close and personal as thousands of dazzling butterflies flit, float, and flutter around you inside the tropical jungle habitat. Visitors wearing bright colors may even find a butterfly perching on them! www.sdzsafaripark.org
GARDENING FOR BUTTERFLIES
ANNUAL BUTTERFLY RELEASE
April 4 11 a.m. – 2 p.m.
May 23 10 a.m. – 3 p.m.
Butterfly Farms is a nonprofit in Encinitas that focuses on native butterfly education, conservation, and research. Their free-flight butterfly vivarium is open to the public every day from April through November, and they also host a variety of events throughout the year. Learn from butterfly gardening experts about how to create a garden habitat for butterflies and other pollinators in their Butterfly Gardening 101 workshop on April 4.
With plenty of nectar-rich plants and hiding spots within the rocks, Balboa Park’s Zoro Garden (also called Butterfly Garden) is the perfect place for caterpillars to safely complete their life cycle into butterflies. Each year, Friends of Balboa Park has been celebrating the beginning of spring with the Butterfly Release, bringing in 400 live painted lady butterflies to encourage pollination throughout the park. Mark your calendars for this fun and free event!
