Graduation Is in the Air
P U B L I S HE R
Derrick Breaux
A
s we approach summer, there’s a little something more than warmer days looming in the air. Graduation is upon us. Elementary is promoted to middle school. Middle schoolers move on to high school. High school... College… Graduations, celebrations, and transitions are all around us during May and June. For those of you that know us personally or have been along for the ZCode Magazines journey, it will come as no surprise that my wife and I run a very busy household. Having three kids, it seems that every time we turn around, one of them is advancing to a new chapter in their lives. A close relative gave me some good advice many years ago. He said not to blink, meaning that time flies when you have kids, and they’ll be grown before you know it. And as much as I try to take that advice, I must be blinking more than I realize. Things seem to be moving way too fast! This month, our oldest daughter, Ashley, will graduate college and begin her journey in the MBA program. To say that my wife and I are proud of her is a dramatic understatement. We are constantly impressed with her passion for life, her dedication to her family and friends, and her commitment to success. It seems like yesterday when I was sitting at this same computer writing about Ashley graduating high school. I must have blinked! This 22-year-old woman is the same little girl that we taught to ride a bike at the age of three. The little girl that we began coaching in soccer at the age of four, eventually developing into a speedster that could outrun nearly every opponent down the sideline when given the opportunity. Believe it or not, she’s still outrunning opponents in the various soccer leagues that she plays in for fun – not to mention the soccer teams that she coaches. As parents, my wife and I couldn’t ask for a better big sister for our two younger kiddos. She has set a great example for them, and they are always thrilled to have her around, whether she is watching them play sports or just hanging at the house playing games. She makes time in her busy schedule to nurture those relationships. She takes her role as a big sister seriously. Those that know Ashley would be the first to say that she is their biggest fan. So, my wife and I would like to send a special congratulations to our little Ashley. You did it! You continue to impress us. We are proud of you, and more importantly, we hope you are just as proud of yourself. As much as we try not to blink, we can’t wait to watch you on your journey through the MBA program and beyond. Keep up the good work and don’t forget to set aside a little time to take it all in. Congrats to all the graduates in our community! There are a few days that you remember for the rest of your life, and graduation day is one of them. P.S. I would also like to congratulate our youngest daughter, Audrey. She’ll be making her transition into high school this year. Keep up the great work! We are proud of you.

AMANDA LETZRING TRANSITIONS FROM DANCING ON STAGE TO PERFECTING HER SWING
T
he commitment and hard work of elite competition is nothing new to Amanda Letzring, a Scripps Ranch native and junior at Mt. Carmel High School. What comes as a surprise, even to Amanda herself, is where she is competing today. After a decade of dancing competitive Russian ballet, Amanda has successfully shifted her athletic pursuits from the dance stage to the tennis court. Amanda was only three years old when she was introduced to Russian style ballet. Over the next 10 years, she danced seven days a week and earned a number of accolades. She competed in the Youth America Grand Prix, participated in the Kirov Academy of Ballet’s summer program in Washington, D.C., and performed the role of Clara in The Nutcracker at the California Center for the Arts, Escondido. “I loved expressing myself to the classical music,” Amanda explained. “I also loved the challenge of learning new choreography and perfecting it.” When Amanda turned 13, many of her dance peers were developing foot and ankle injuries. Amanda’s mom decided it was time for a new sport. “To my dismay, my mom pulled me out of ballet to try tennis for six months and told me that if I did not like it, I could go back to ballet,” Amanda shared. Initially humbled in the beginner’s group with kids half her age, Amanda accepted the challenge. “Within six months, I was moving my way up in the groups and played my first novice tournament,” she said. “From then on, I continued to put in complete effort every second I was on the tennis court, also seven days a week, beginning to win more tournaments.” The immediate rewards of tennis were clear, plus Amanda

recognized the future she could have playing tennis in college. “Although I miss my childhood of competitive ballet, I ended up falling in love with tennis and my mom was right.” Her accolades on the court include earning the title of MVP in the three years she played as #1 singles in varsity tennis, being named the all CIF First Team for Girls Tennis, and Palomar League Player of the Year. She was also featured as Athlete of the Month and nominated for Athlete of the Year for three years in a row at Mt. Carmel. In her free time, Amanda enjoys watching Food Network, cooking, and volunteering at tennis tournaments in the community to help teach younger children how to improve their skills. Looking ahead, Amanda is continuing her hard work in school and on the court. Her plans include attending college and playing tennis for a Division 1 or 2 team, becoming a CPA, and working as a forensic accountant for the FBI.

PATTY DAMRON SHARES HER LOVE OF SINGING WITH THE LOCAL COMMUNITY AND THE WORLD by JENNIFER FRAKES | photos by PortrArt Creations
P
atty Damron is passionate about sharing her love of song with the world. She is a second generation member of the San Diego Chorus who began singing with the group at the tender age of six. “I started performing with my mom, who was a 35-year member. Back then, family members were part of the cast when the San Diego Chorus put on shows. When I was 16, I became a member myself. I find pure joy in sharing with others through songs and their messages,” explained Patty. The San Diego Chorus is a world renowned women’s singing group with accolades that include winning regional, national, and international competitions. Over the course of Patty’s 39 years as a member of the San Diego Chorus, she has held many positions, including her current roles as a front row member, assistant bass section leader, and audio voice listener.

As a second grade teacher at Hickman Elementary School, Patty also finds great joy in making a difference in the lives of children. She and her fellow teachers at Hickman are dedicated to The Leader in Me, a program that helps schools create well-rounded learners by developing the whole person and preparing students to become leaders. Patty’s longevity at Hickman is something for which she is extremely proud. “I taught sixth grade for one year, first grade for 19 years, and I have been teaching second grade for five years now. I am starting to teach children of former students!” revealed Patty. Patty’s faith is paramount in her life. She shares her faith as an active member of City Church San Diego, where she sings and co-chairs their newly established choir and has taken care of infants and toddlers at the church for the past decade. “In all the venues of my life, no two days are ever the same,” she shared. “I enjoy striving for the next highlight in my life, and everything is possible because Jesus lives in and through me.” Spending time with her family is also extremely important to Patty. She has been married to her husband for 28 years, and they have two grown daughters, both of whom live locally. “Breanna is going to Miramar Community College, and Sharoll is graduating from Point Loma Nazarene University in May and will attend San Diego State in the fall to pursue her master’s degree,” said Patty proudly.

TOBY WELLS FOUNDATION GOLF CLASSIC HELPS KIDS AND ANIMALS IN NEED
T
he Toby Wells Foundation will hold its 18th Annual Toby Wells & Craig Castaneda Golf Classic on June 14 at the Barona Creek Golf Club in Lakeside. This year’s theme is Route 66. The tournament is the foundation’s primary fundraising tool to fund all of the programs that provide support to hundreds of underprivileged children and neglected animals throughout San Diego County and other parts of Southern California. The Toby Wells Foundation was first established after Adrienne Wells and April West began searching for ways to raise funds and
awareness and honor the memory of their brother Toby, who died from medical complications after paralysis from a swimming accident. The tournament began shortly after the foundation’s establishment, when the Wells family purchased a 300-acre ranch called Blue Apple Ranch. The ranch is populated with several types of rescued animals who are cared for by disenfranchised and disabled children. Toby was known for his love of animals and frequently rescued dogs in animal shelters. Proceeds from the tournament will go to funding a one-day, outdoor afternoon of fun
for 250 local foster youth through the nonprofit Voices for Children, field trips for children of military households through the Armed Services YMCA, a work-readiness internship for foster youth at San Pasqual Academy and at-risk youth from Abraxas High School and Warner Springs High School, a holiday shopping spree for Polinsky Children’s Center and the Armed Services YMCA where each child receives a $200 gift card to Walmart, and assistance in caring for Blue Apple Ranch’s rescued animals. DIGITAL MUSIC: HOW CAN I CREATE IT? I
n the last decade the face of digital music recording has changed dramatically. Now, for a modest budget, a bedroom producer can have all of the tools necessary to make a great sounding recording. There’s only one issue… how do you use all this stuff?! Finding the DAW (digital audio workstation) that’s right for you can be a daunting enough task, but knowing the ins and outs of your software can take years to master without guidance. The best bet for any aspiring producer is targeted, hands-on training, customized to their program preferences, learning styles, and experience. YouTube might have a slew of videos, but it’s a distant second to an expert instructor with hands-on training. Luckily, Studio West employs a team of experienced engineers and producers that are happy to show students the ropes. The Scripps-Mesa Garden Club Promotes Enthusiasm for Local Horticulture
S
ince 1993, the Scripps-Mesa Garden Club has been drawing like-minded people together to share information about everything gardening – from growing flowers, drought-tolerant plants, and vegetables to maintaining a
healthy and beautiful landscape. The group meets every month with a guest speaker, and often participates in
garden tours as well as annual community events. Read along as we chat with Garden Club Board Members Lynnell
Hallock, Helen Plutner, and Louise Badham to learn more about how the club keeps Scripps Ranch looking beautiful.

Q&A
with
Scripps-Mesa Garden Club Board Members Lynnell Hallock, Helen Plutner, and Louise Badham
When was the Scripps-Mesa Garden Club founded, and by whom? The garden club was founded by Cynthia Drake in 1993. What is the club’s mission and how do you go about fulfilling it? The club’s mission is to provide people interested in gardens with information on how to set up and maintain a healthy landscape. We do this through speakers, garden tours, and sharing with other members. How has the club changed or developed since it was founded? The club has become larger. It started with five members and has increased to around 20. There are more people coming from surrounding areas with different garden needs. How did you personally become involved in the Scripps-Mesa Garden Club? Many of us became personally involved when invited to speak on flower arranging and other gardening subjects, as well as serving as board members of the SRCA sustainable group.

C O V E R F E AT U R E
What is the most rewarding aspect about your role? The most challenging? The most rewarding aspect of the club is gaining new information from speakers and fellow members. The most challenging might be finding the speakers for as well as attending the events. Which communities benefit from the Garden Club’s efforts? Garden Club efforts can be seen in the yards of people in the club in Scripps Ranch, Mira Mesa, and Poway. What types of activities is the club involved with? Can you elaborate on some of the projects the club has worked on in the past? In the past the club has worked on setting up planters for the library. The club participates in the Scripps Ranch Civic Association’s fair and the SRCA meet and greet event. When and where does the Garden Club meet? The club meets on the fourth Tuesday of the month at the Scripps Ranch Library at 6 p.m. What are the club’s short-term and long-term goals? The club’s short-term goals are to find more members. Long-term goals would be to visit more gardens in San Diego and to promote more enthusiasm for beautiful and edible gardens using a variety of plants. Are there any exciting new projects or events coming up? There will be several garden tours in the future. How would somebody go about joining the Scripps-Mesa Garden Club? What are the criteria for membership? The Scripps-Mesa Garden Club has members who are long-time, experienced gardeners and others that are just beginning to get their hands dirty. It includes members who have moved from other states, and hope to find out what grows best in San Diego. Some members enjoy flowers, while some are into drought-resistant plants. For others, it’s all about growing vegetables. Still, the members of this 20-yearold organization have many commonalities: they’re friendly, they’re enthusiastic, and they share an interest in gardening. People are invited to visit and then join if they wish. The annual dues are $20 per family. If you could grant the club one wish, what would it be? The one wish would be to go completely organic in gardening. Is there anything else that you would like our readers to know? The Scripps-Mesa Garden Club is a welcoming, enthusiastic group of members who would like to see others in the community come and join as well and improve their landscape.

Katie Kelly Serves the Community in the Classroom and Around the Campfire by LIZ ONUFER | photo by Forever Photography by Liberty
K
“I wanted to share this life-changing experience with as many people as possible.”
atie Kelly knows the power in connecting with young people and creating a community of belonging. As a teacher and camp director, her influence is felt from the classroom to the campfire. In addition to her work as a first grade teacher at Willow Grove Elementary School, Katie is the founder of Camp Kinneloa, a residential camp serving children with Type 1 diabetes. Katie’s inspiration to start Camp Kinneloa was born of her own experience as a child. She has Type 1 diabetes and attended diabetes camp. “There was a delightfully refreshing sense of ‘normalcy’ there as I found myself in a crowd of kids with Type 1,” she acknowledged. “I remember leaving camp feeling empowered. There was a newfound motivation behind taking care of myself, knowing that my friends were headed home to do the same.” This experience as a child, combined with her nine summers of working at Outpost Summer Camps as a counselor and director, has led Katie to open Camp Kinneloa. “I wanted to share this life-changing experience with as many people as possible,” she shared. Katie’s work as camp director mirrors her philosophy in her first grade classroom. “I love building relationships with my students and creating a community that feels like a place of belonging for them,” she shared. “One of the most rewarding parts is seeing their confidence develop as they learn and grow.” Of course, just as with summer camp, there is no shortage of adventure, she noted. “Working with six and seven year olds provides you plenty of entertaining stories as well!” Katie is surrounded by a family who understands the hurdles in the classroom and camp. Her husband, Patrick, is a special education teacher at Santana High School in Santee. Katie’s sister and brother-in-law are the owners of Outpost Summer Camps. “Apparently, camp runs in the family!” she said. Camp Kinneloa will hold its first camp session from June 24 to 29 at the Cuyamaca Retreat Center. The camp is currently looking for volunteer counselors and medical staff. FINANCIAL PROFILE
San Diego Made WHEELHOUSE CREDIT UNION OFFERS FINANCIAL EXPERTISE TO THE LOCAL COMMUNITY by KELLEY GUSICH
W
heelhouse Credit Union has a long history in the San Diego community. Beginning in 1934 as San Diego Municipal Employees Credit Union, the Credit Union was created by metropolitan workers seeking financial relief during the worst economic period in the nation’s history. “After a few iterations,” Wheelhouse President and CEO Lisa Paul-Hill explained, “over nearly a century (including most recently San Diego Metropolitan Credit Union), our name today – Wheelhouse Credit Union – is unique to a financial institution, and reflects who we are and what we have been to our members for over 85 years.” “As a member-owned, not-for-profit institution, we make decisions based solely on what is best for members and seek their input along the way,” shared Paul-Hill. Offering high-yield deposit products and low-rate loan products (like water conservation, energy efficiency, and solar loans), Wheelhouse received the 2017 Business of the Year Award for their Solar & Energy Efficiency Programs. Created in 2011 and one of the first solar lenders in California, the Energy Efficiency Program focuses on each homeowner’s energy saving needs. “We are proud of our green efforts resulting in a savings of approximately 105,795,420 kWh of electricity per year, which is the equivalent of saving 1,907,030 trees!” exclaimed Paul-Hill. Wheelhouse Credit Union is truly “San Diego Made,” comprised of employees and members who live and work in communities throughout San Diego. Wheelhouse also volunteers much time and energy locally. As the official credit union to the San Diego Seals professional lacrosse team, employees actively volunteer side-by-side with Seals players, most recently with Feeding San Diego and Read – Lisa Paul-Hill Across America. In addition, Wheelhouse staff gets involved with Toys for Tots, I Love a Clean San Diego Coastal Cleanup, Make-A-Wish, and San Diego EarthFair Balboa Park, as these events embody Wheelhouse’s commitment to giving back to the community. These team members are what makes the business different from traditional banks – it’s not uncommon to walk into a Wheelhouse branch and see the same familiar face you first met 10 or 20 years ago. “Our culture, teamwork, and collaboration are drivers of our success,” Paul-Hill affirmed. New and exciting things are happening at Wheelhouse Credit Union. The downtown branch is undergoing a total renovation, and Wheelhouse recently launched a new website with easy navigation and helpful financial tools. Accounts are accessible 24/7 with nationwide access to over 5,000 shared branches and more than 30,000 surcharge-free ATMs through the CO-OP® Network. Anyone living or working in San Diego County is invited to join Wheelhouse Credit Union. Check out the new high-yield checking, savings, and money market accounts bearing the name Inspired.

P
innacle Endodontics has been saving teeth in Scripps Ranch since 2010. Dr. Anthony John shared, “My vision and dream was to create a state-of-the-art endodontic office where I could provide the highest quality care to my community. After working in numerous settings in both military and private offices, I gained the knowledge to achieve this.” Dr. John served as division officer on board the CVN-75 USS Harry S. Truman, then served at the National Naval Medical Center while earning his M.S. from The George Washington University. His tour at Camp Pendleton and Miramar Marine Corps Air
Station led him to fall in love with San Diego. Pinnacle Endodontics provides a wide range of services, including diagnosis of tooth pain, root canals, retreatment of defective endodontic procedures, and treatment of sports-related trauma. ROOT CANAL SPECIALIST also provide internal bleaching of discolored teeth and regenerative endodontics for young permanent teeth. The state-of-the-art technology sets Pinnacle Endodontics apart and allows the team to diagnose conditions that might be untreated through less sophisticated tools. Dr. John explained, “We save teeth that would normally have to be removed without the benefit of 3D/CBCT imaging and microscope enhanced dental specialty care.” Dr. John places a high value on continuing education, and is involved with numerous professional dental and endodontic associations. Patients at Pinnacle Endodontics range in age and background. “I work closely with many local dentists who refer their patients to me,” said Dr. John. “I appreciate the confidence they place in our office. We also have many patients come to us by word of mouth through a friend or family member.” Patients appreciate the convenient location, the calm, relaxing environment, and the friendly staff. Dr. John strives to ensure a positive experience through the end of the visit. “The highlight of a patient’s visit is usually how delighted they are when they realize the procedure was completely pain-free,” said Dr. John. “Many people think of
pain when they think of having a root canal, and this is not the case at all.” “My regular dentist referred me to this expert,” said Arthur P., a Pinnacle Endodontics patient. “I was an ordinary patient of ordinary means but Dr. John’s team took care of me as if I was the most important person on earth.”

AP Season Comes to Scripps Ranch
A
s May approaches Scripps Ranch High, one will start to see more students carrying Barron’s Advanced Placement (AP) books – in addition to their school textbooks – around campus. It’s that time of year again: AP testing! SRHS offers a variety of AP classes, from art to Spanish to European history, which start being offered to students as sophomores. All year, the students and teachers race to cover the required material to be best prepared for their May test date. Sophomore Kashika Gupta is enrolled in two AP classes, Art History and Biology. “I’m nervous for the tests because this is my first experience with College Board and the world of APs,” Gupta proclaimed. Monish Alishala, a junior, took AP Art History and Biology last year, too, and this year doubled his AP course load. Taking AP Computer Science, U.S. History, English Language, and Calculus
AB, Alishala said time management is his main focus this AP season. “Since I’m taking four AP classes and tests, I have to memorize a lot of information. If I don’t, I’m going to have to cram a year of knowledge into a few nights of studying, which diminishes my chance at success,” he said. However, since AP classes take their class finals the week before the tests, students have to study early, which works in their favor, forcing them to start studying a week before the AP test. AP class tests allow students to express their interest in a certain field (and adds a GPA boost, which never hurts). Best of luck to our fabulous Falcons!

Colossus Painting Provides Its Customers With a Better Product for an Affordable Price
rior to starting Colossus Painting, Joshua Berner sold paint to contractors, using his expertise to teach them how to resolve issues and specify which types of paint would work best for a given project. It wasn’t long before Joshua decided to use his knowledge of the painting industry to start his own painting company and, in 2008, Colossus Painting was born. “I wanted to create a company that could serve customers much better and provide a better product for an affordable price,” Joshua explained. Today, Colossus Painting has made Joshua’s dream a reality by providing interior and exterior painting of homes and businesses, while also offering repair of stucco, drywall, and wood. “Colossus is unique in its approach to a project,” stated Joshua. “We tailor your job to the best system or options of systems for your home. This differs from a lot of other companies in the area.” Color retention is a big issue with exterior paint jobs here in San Diego as well as washability and durability they contend with on interior jobs. Colossus has solutions for this. “Our feeling is when your job is complete, it should stand out in appearance and longevity compared to those painted by someone else,” Joshua added. It’s important to note that a little paint can go a long way in changing the appearance of a home. “People forget about paint,” said Joshua. “It is a great way to make your home look great in a relatively short amount of time. We paint and stain a lot of cabinets, front doors, and garage doors.” From the beginning, the team at Colossus Painting has made an effort to give back. “We have helped a lot of schools and people,” explained Joshua. “We’ve painted homes for free. It’s a joy for us and our workers as much as it is for the homeowner who is having a difficult life situation.” Joshua is proud of his family-oriented, friendly, and professional staff. “I believe that when someone hires us, they realize they are dealing with a knowledgeable and professional company and will receive a great paint job,” shared Joshua. “We help the customer through the process and can get them the right tools to make their job successful.” 40 • 92131MAGAZINE.COM • May | June 2019
