FROM THE PUBLISHER VO L . 9, N O. 4 TM

A Decade Already?

I

t all started with a passion for our community. We didn’t know exactly what we were about to get ourselves into, but after months of napkin scratching (often accompanied by a glass of wine or two at one of our favorite local restaurants), the concept of ZCode Magazines was born – starting with the debut of 92127 Magazine. It’s hard to believe that the first issue was delivered to homes 10 years ago this month. To put it in perspective, our oldest daughter was in middle school (now she’s studying for her MBA in college), and our two youngest kiddos – now both in high school – were only four and five years old. Where has the time gone? The concept of our local zip code magazines was simple: publish magazines about the community that people want to read. And that simple concept is still our company mission statement to this very day. People are proud to live, work, and play in their communities, and we are excited to deliver magazines that showcase everything local. Over the past 10 years, we have published 561 issues. That’s more than 30,000 individual magazine pages that have been designed and printed! We’ve had the privilege to spotlight more than 500 families, more than 500 students, thousands of local businesses, and countless other interesting hyper-local stories. By creating bigger-than-life printed editorial features, people are proud to have their stories memorialized and often keep copies of “their” magazine on display for all to see. In fact, ZCode Magazines articles can be found framed and hanging on the walls of local businesses, showcased in the homes of local families, students, and volunteers, and prominently displayed in our local schools. 92131 is your community, and 92131 Magazine is your magazine. Be sure to stay in touch and recommend articles. Derrick Breaux And we love to receive photos! Also, take a moment to thank Publisher and support the local businesses that participate in this magazine. We wouldn’t be able to publish 92131 Magazine without their enthusiastic support. It’s been a great decade! We look forward to serving our local communities for years to come. Thanks for being a reader and supporting 92131 Magazine!

Regards, Derrick Breaux, Publisher

Pam Pond Launched a Successful Scripps Ranch Philanthropy by LINDA FRABL | photo by PortrArt Creations

P

am Pond, a native San Diegan who has lived in Scripps Ranch for 20 years, has fully immersed herself in her community. She can be found cheering on the athletic activities of her three sons, running three mornings a week with her Sunrise Sistahs running group, attending her book club gatherings, and enthusiastically teaching her fifth grade students at Jerabek Elementary. Now Pam is calling on her friends and neighbors to consider participating in a charitable group she has founded called the Philanthropic Chicks of Scripps Ranch. The group meets four times a year for about an hour to listen to a presenter from a nonprofit organization that needs financial support, and that almost always has ties to Scripps Ranch. Pam revealed, “There is an understanding that if you come to the meetings, you agree to donate a minimum of $25. My thinking is that instead of going out to dinner and spending money, we’ll give it to a group in need. Also, anyone can come to our meetings; no need to RSVP. Just come join the fun!” Pam got the idea for the philanthropy in 2014 while visiting her sister in Arizona, who had invited her to attend a similar type of meeting. Pam recalled, “I was so inspired, and I thought I could do it in Scripps Ranch. I knew my friends would come. So I came back and we had our first meeting, which was a success. Now that it’s five years later, we’ve raised $37,372!” The Philanthropic Chicks has become such a wellknown source of local funds that there is a waiting list for the nonprofits to do their presentations. Pam lamented, “The most challenging part of this is fitting all the groups in!” Alternately discussing what she most loves about the charitable group, she shared, “The most rewarding part of the Philanthropic Chicks is looking around at a meeting and feeling the love in the room. It is so powerful to Pam Pond give and expect nothing in Elementary School Teacher return. So many people Scripps Ranch in Scripps Ranch are Husband – Chris; Sons – Stewart (19), extremely generous Davis (18), and Grady (16) and truly want to Family, running, teaching, and helping! make the world a Jerabek Elementary, Yanni’s Bar and better place.”  Grill, Fitness Quest 10, STEM Floral, The French Oven, and Miramar Lake

ED BROWN CENTER PARTICIPATES IN RIDESHARING PILOT PROGRAM photo provided by Jewish Family Service

’s Ed Brown Center is partnering with Jewish Family Service to test-pilot the organization’s On the Go program. On the Go aims to connect older adults with ridesharing services to help them access health and wellness programs, easing mobility and transportation barriers that can make it difficult for older adults to travel. On the Go calls on local volunteers to provide group shuttles and door-to-door rides, as well as offering premium and on-demand services for older adults. “Ed Brown Center in Rancho Bernardo is an important destination for older adults in San Diego, and we work hard to make the center programs accessible through a variety of transportation options for our members,” said Meredith

“We are honored to implement this pilot program and hope that other senior centers will be able to learn from it to expand their transportation options for older adults.”

Morgenroth, Jewish Family Service Senior Director of Social and Wellness. “We are honored to implement this pilot program and hope that other senior centers will be able to learn from it to expand their transportation options for older adults.” The Ed Brown Center is one of three senior centers throughout the country partnering with Jewish Family Service for the pilot program, which is part of a partnership with Lyft and the National Council on Aging. Ed Brown Center services include support groups, fitness classes, social activities, and health education, among others. Learn more at www.edbrowncenter.org and www.jfssd.org/onthego. 

Brain Balance Addresses Challenges with a Drug-Free, Integrative Approach by LIZ ONUFER | photos provided by Brain Balance

N

o single factor can point to a child’s success or, for that matter, their struggle. Raising children requires a holistic approach. So when kids are struggling – behaviorally, socially, academically – figuring out the underlying causes and pairing that with the right support can be a real challenge. Brain Balance of San Diego offers a drug-free, personalized, integrative approach to help children reach their full potential. “Gaps and holes in development result in gaps and holes in behavior, academics, socialization, and confidence,” owner Jon Pak explained. Using extensive brain research, Brain Balance creates individualized plans to strengthen the brain’s weaker areas, including sensory engagement, core muscle

strength and coordination, eye tracking, auditory processing, academic guidance, and nutritional guidance. “Extensive scientific research demonstrates that the brain is malleable,” Jon said. “Brain Balance has applied this research to develop a program that focuses on improving the foundation of development and brain connectivity rather than masking or coping with symptoms.” Those symptoms can range from lack of focus and meltdowns to lack of confidence and social struggles. They work with children with or without a diagnosis from pre-K to 12th grade who struggle behaviorally, socially, and academically. This includes but is not limited to lack of focus, impulsiveness, tantrums, learning challenges, lack of confidence, and challenging family/social relationships as well as with children diagnosed with ADHD, dyslexia, processing disorders, Asperger syndrome, high functioning autism (now considered a part of Autism Spectrum Disorder), and others. Jon was inspired to open Brain Balance of San Diego from his own experience. As a father of a child with special needs, Jon witnessed his son’s friends being treated with medication and struggling with the side effects without improvement. Jon opened the doors of Brain Balance to help families who did not know of options other than medication. The program is currently in 31 states and has served over 30,000 children. “Many of our center owners are parents of the children we’ve helped,” Jon shared. “They have personally experienced how Brain Balance has helped their children and wanted to provide that same opportunity to other parents.” Through a personalized combination of in-center sessions, at-home activities, and a nutrition program, the Brain Balance program addresses the individual gaps for each child to improve focus, behavior, social skills, sensory processing, and academics. The true testament to its success comes from the parents. Making friends, focusing in class, and improving self-esteem are only a few of the many successes that Brain Balance of San Diego hopes to share with other struggling children and their family. Jon acknowledged, “If you and your child are struggling and nothing has worked for you, there’s hope.” 

COMMUNITY STUFF

Starry Starry Night Gala

35th Annual Coastal Cleanup Day I Love A Clean San Diego (ILACSD) hosted its 35th Annual Coastal Cleanup Day at 107 sites throughout San Diego County in September, including Miramar Lake. More than 6,500 volunteers cleared nearly 145,000 pounds of waste and debris from streets, canyons, parks, and the coastline, as well as completing restoration projects such as painting, graffiti removal, nonnative vegetation removal, mulching, trail restoration, and weeding. For the 35th year in a row, plastic remains the chief polluter collected throughout the county, and cigarette butts remain the most littered individual item. Some notable odd items collected included a reclining chair, refrigerator, wheelchair, plastic Christmas tree, messages in a bottle, rice cooker, restaurant pager, and a guitar case. Coastal Cleanup Day is one of two annual countywide cleanups hosted by ILACSD; the Creek to Bay cleanup will be held on April 25, 2020. Learn more about how to get involved at www.ilacsd.org.

Voices for Children’s (VFC) 17th Annual Starry Starry Night Gala, held at Rancho Valencia Resort and Spa, raised more than $1.15 million to support the organization’s Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) program. The event, co-chaired by 92131’s Katie Sullivan, as well as Annette Bradbury, Lisette Farrell, Haeyoung Tang, and Lise Wilson, hosted nearly 350 guests for an evening under the stars, complete with a cocktail reception, dinner, live auction, and dancing. A highlight of the event was hearing from former foster youth Corrin, as she shared the impact her CASA had on her life. VFC also presented its inaugural CASA of the Year award to Christie Ranney, who has served as a CASA volunteer for 15 children, including three sets of siblings, over the course of 18 years. She also serves on the organization’s volunteer outreach team and has helped recruit hundreds of volunteers to take on the CASA role. Learn more at www.speakupnow.org.

North County Resident Joins Charity Board Local resident Paul Fitzgerald recently joined the Ronald McDonald House Charities of San Diego (RMHCSD) board of trustees. Fitzgerald is senior manager of strategic sourcing at Qualcomm and also serves on the board for the International Facility Managers Association. He joins RMHCSD along with four other new board members – Steven Bernstein, Brandy Bullen, Jessie Green, and Adrienne Hoehn Sherman. RMHCSD provides a home away from home for families with children being treated at local hospitals. The Ronald McDonald House provides overnight guest rooms, a kitchen, and a children’s play area to help create a comfortable sanctuary during difficult times. “Each of our new trustees bring skills and experience that will be invaluable to expanding and enhancing the impact of our organization,” said Chuck Day, President and CEO of RMHCSD. “They join us during a significant time, as the need for Ronald McDonald House’s services far exceeds our capacity of 56-bedroom suites. Every night, approximately 30 families who need a room must be placed on our waitlist, while accessing our supportive services through our Family Care Center.” Learn more at www.rmhcsd.org.

National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists Twelve Scripps Ranch High School students were recently named 2020 National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation: Ashvin Choudhary, Albert Gu, Samuel Lee, Frederick Liu, Ryan Mikami, Samantha Mossuto, Jeremy Ngo, Priya Patel, Shrayya Sanigepalli, Mahek Shah, Jason Tu, and Kyla Yu-Swanson. Approximately 16,000 students were selected as semifinalists from a pool of over 1.5 million entrants from 21,000 high schools across the country based on their scores on the 2018 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. Over 90 percent of semifinalists are expected to advance to the finalist level, where they will be in the running for 7,600 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $31 million. Final selection is based on students’ skills, accomplishments, and potential for success in college programs. Finalists will be notified in February, and winners will be announced beginning in April and concluding in July. The 2020 recipients will join more than 345,000 other distinguished students who have earned the Merit Scholar title in the past 65 years. Learn more at www.nationalmerit.org.

13th Annual Play to Protect Golf Tournament The Scripps Ranch Fire Safe Council (SRFSC) recently hosted its 13th Annual Play to Protect Golf Tournament at The Vineyard Golf Course in Escondido. Attendees enjoyed a day of golf, lunch, an auction, raffle, and awards hosted by Dave Mason from Sunny 98.1. Twentytwo golfers participated in the tournament, including four golfers from CAL FIRE. First place winners were Deputy Fire Chief John Woods, Fire Captain Jeff Larson, and Stu Gross. Second place winners were David Massey, Mark Smoley, and Dan Smiley. Third place winners were Jeremy Sanders, Derek Morse, and Dave Parker. The tournament raised over $1,200 to help SRFSC achieve its goals of updating community evacuation plans, cleaning up some areas of Scripps Ranch that are at risk of fire, and outfitting strategic areas in the community with equipment for first responders in case of an evacuation emergency. MONTESSORI CHILD DEVELOPMENT CENTER

M

ontessori Child Development Center (MCDC) equips preschool and kindergarten children to create extensive knowledge of their world through exploration and observation. The child-centered environment encourages children to be self-motivated and behave as active participants in their own learning. Students work individually or in small, self-selected groups, where they teach, collaborate, and help each other. Highly qualified teachers observe and offer direction and support while promoting independence, self-direction, and self-discipline, resulting in children who are engaged in learning and eager to advance. Learning at MCDC extends beyond the classroom to the gifts of the natural world. Situated in a large house re-designed for school use, surrounded by trees, vegetable and flower gardens, selected farm animals, and a grassy play area, the Montessori environment gives children the opportunity to grow emotionally, socially, cognitively, and creatively. “I believe young children thrive in an educational environment where they are treated like the unique individuals they are and are guided by teachers who love children and understand their needs,” said Marijane Schafer, Founder and Director of MCDC Poway. “I opened the school in 1978 to provide parents in our community with a quality educational alternative for their children. We have remained intentionally small so that we can maintain a close relationship with the children and their families. As ever, the staff and I are committed to giving every child an opportunity to discover and develop to their potential.” 

rom the border to Oceanside, The Bishop’s School brings together a diverse and thriving student and faculty population. The School was founded in 1909 as a girls’ boarding school when sisters Ellen Browning Scripps and Eliza Virginia Scripps joined Bishop Joseph Horsfall Johnson to create an institution committed to an ideal that still holds true today: School should be an “open door to knowledge.” In 1971, the School merged with the San Miguel School for Boys. Today, Bishop’s serves 800 students in grades 6 through 12. San Diego’s only independent middle and high school affiliated with the Episcopal Church, Bishop’s is an inclusive community where students come from more than 70 schools representing diverse religious, cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds. This school year, 49 percent of students self-identify as people of color and 20 percent receive more than $3 million in financial aid. Chaplain Nicole Simopoulos-Pigato said, “We emphasize compassion for all people, respect for the dignity of every human being, and the calls to love our neighbors as ourselves and to strive for justice and peace in the world.” Bishop’s programs are designed to meet students’ individual needs – both academically and emotionally, as student well-being is the top priority. Academic options, levels and paths are offered to best fit every student’s abilities, interests and potential, ensuring readiness and success in college and beyond. Opportunities extend beyond the classroom, including academic competitions, international travel, a peer support group, affinity groups, guest speakers and a community service program, to name a few. There are 72 different sports teams, 40 performing arts shows per year in dance, theater, and choral and instrumental music, and visual arts possibilities from photography to animation and more. Learning, leading and acting with open hearts and minds, Bishop’s students engage in the classroom, the community, and the world. 

THE GRAUER SCHOOL

S

ituated on a six-acre natural paradise in Encinitas, alive with native plants and animals and a light coastal breeze, The Grauer School campus itself serves as the starting point for its expeditionary learning tradition. Students are encouraged to use the school campus and the world around them, from the nearby San Elijo Lagoon to Kenya, as primary resources for generating curiosity and experiencing authentic learning. Founded in 1991, Grauer focuses on helping students develop their unique voice, discover their passions, and take ownership over their own learning. The school’s founder, Dr. Stuart Grauer, noted, “We have traveled far and wide studying the world’s most inspirational schools and educational movements: Montessori, Waldorf, Reggio Emilia, Socratic, free and democratic schooling, expeditionary learning and classical education, from one-room schoolhouses to Peking University. These traditions have provided us with heroes, mentors, and wisdom.” “The Grauer School uses the foundations of these great traditions and movements to infuse all we keep learning and synthesizing,” said Grauer Principal Dana Abplanalp-Diggs. “The result is a campus of purpose, optimism, and inspiration. We commit to continuing to develop the finest, most engaged, humanitarian independent

school in the world. And even though our focus is not on rankings and test scores, our students are succeeding at their top choice colleges.” Engaging students in six core values – resourcefulness, intellectual curiosity, perseverance, compassion, self-advocacy, and accountability – The Grauer School aims to develop well-rounded students who are purposeful, confident global citizens. The learning curriculum involves field trips, community service activities, art, expeditions, and student-created programs. Grauer is also the region’s only UNESCO affiliate school, with 176 partner schools around the world. Grauer’s expeditionary learning and arts programs are across the curriculum. The school also launched its Environmental Stewardship Pledge this year, dedicating the 2019-2020 school year to promoting ecological sustainability and stewardship in the school community and beyond. The resolution impacts every aspect of the school, from in- and out-ofclass curriculum to school culture and finance. “We know our students are not inheriting the world or climate we inherited,” said Grauer. “We have a moral imperative to prepare them courageously.” As the longest-serving independent school in North County San Diego, The Grauer School fosters nurturing relationships between teachers and students, giving learners 99th percentile levels of connection and engagement so that they are empowered in their education. “In a world that often seems to put standards before personal development, and to put institutional needs above human needs, Grauer keeps the focus on the individual student,” said Abplanalp-Diggs. “Our students achieve and are valued because they are developing personal passions, and teens coming of age are finding their unique voices at Grauer.” 

t Army and Navy Academy (ANA), learning is more than academics. Boys in grades 7 through 12 are encouraged to discover their unique selves and pursue independence and leadership in all that they do. The year-round boarding school environment allows for structure, hierarchy, and order so that each boy can shine brightly as an individual while being part of a collective team. “As young men find out where they shine and gain profound self-awareness, we witness their growth, whether it is igniting a deeper passion for learning, scoring the goal, acquiring a leadership role, forging new friendships, or applying to college,” said Major General Arthur Bartell, ANA President. Leadership is a cornerstone of the Army and Navy Academy experience. Military programs foster camaraderie, a sense of belonging, and many opportunities for service and leadership. Though less than one percent of ANA graduates enter military service, 100 percent of Cadets continue their personal journey prepared for future leadership roles, complimented by a strong sense of independence, responsibility, and moral and ethical values. The core curriculum at ANA is based on the University of California’s entrance requirements, and

the college preparatory curriculum includes Advanced Placement and honors courses. Furthermore, ANA operates as a Gurian Model school, utilizing instructional techniques tailored specifically to how boys’ brains work, learn, and become motivated to reach their full potential. Students are also offered exciting electives such as aviation and computer science, visual and performing arts opportunities, a robust athletics program, a variety of clubs, and supervised weekend trips. Perhaps the brightest highlight of the Academy’s activities is the privately lifeguarded beachfront along the west edge of the Carlsbad campus, where students are encouraged to take advantage of aquatic activities. All students are taught to put ANA’s core values of honor, respect, responsibility, integrity, compassion, and gratitude into action every day. “It is our goal to ensure that Cadets find their voices and uncover their personalities before going out into the world where they will have to endure and overcome all the obstacles that life presents,” said President Bartell. “We encourage Cadets to test themselves, push beyond their comfort zones, and prove that they can be everything they aspire to be.” 

SRHS Theater Puts on The Great Gatsby

W

ith the crisp, fall air turning into the winds of Jack Frost nipping at your nose, why not seek shelter in the Falcon Playhouse? The Falcon Playhouse will be performing The Great Gatsby in November, and is encouraging all of you old sports to come out and see it! The Great Gatsby, originally written by F. Scott Fitzgerald, takes place in 1922 on Long Island. One of the main characters, Daisy Fay Buchanan, is played by senior Lauren Kogelman. “This is my first time playing a role as large and a character as complex as Daisy Buchanan,” Kogelman said. She’s excited to perform as Daisy, and

is happy that she has such a “hard-working, dedicated, talented, spirited [and] creative” team behind her for support. Junior Annelise McCullough, who will play Ms. Kee, also commented on the story’s complexity. “I love how complicated all of the characters are and how complex the storyline is. I love how there is no real protagonist, and instead that everyone is morally grey,” she added. One of the favorite parts of acting many have is the ability to tell stories from a different era, time, and place. Senior Dylan Darwish plays George Wilson, and remarked, “It’s been a blast to get

into character from the 1920s and really experience that time period.” Darwish enjoys how acting allows one to become someone they normally aren’t. The Great Gatsby will run at the Falcon Playhouse on Nov. 14 and 15 at 6:30 p.m. and Nov. 16 at 1 p.m. with another showing at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $7 pre-sale and $10 at the door. 
