hen I published my first community magazine, our oldest daughter was in the eighth grade. Our son was in kindergarten, and our youngest daughter hadn’t yet started school. The strange thing is that it feels like 2009 was just yesterday. Fast forward, and our oldest daughter is now a senior in college, our son is an eighth grader, and our youngest daughter is in seventh grade. As you know, I often write about time flying by. This past weekend marked another milestone for the Breaux household. Ashley, our oldest daughter, celebrated her 21st birthday! Much to our surprise, Ashley invited us to go out with her group of friends on her special night in downtown San Diego. After repeatedly asking her if she was sure about having her parents tag along, my wife and I reluctantly agreed to go (along with another lifelong friend of ours that Ashley refers to as Aunt Wendy). We needed another adult from our generation for moral support. The group started at a count of 15 people. We all had dinner at a restaurant downtown before Ubering to the first club. The intentions were to stick around for a little while and then head out. That plan didn’t work out so well, as we ended up staying for the duration of the evening. The night was filled with a variety of emotions. I was observing our baby girl in her adult environment for the very first time. Although we were very much interacting with the group, at times I felt like a fly on Derrick and his daughter Ashley the wall – silently observing and taking in the entire circa 2005. Time flies! experience. She was having a great time with her close friends, laughing, dancing, and celebrating. More of Ashley’s friends kept arriving. Some arrivals were clearly unexpected and a special surprise to her. The entire situation touched our hearts. There was one common theme – everyone was there to celebrate with her on her special day. It was at that moment that I realized our baby girl was grown up. Although some may see it as unconventional, we had a great time celebrating with our daughter and her friends that night. I would like to give a special thanks to Ashley’s friends for being such an important part of her life and enthusiastically welcoming us old people into their circle. I still don’t feel like I’m a “grown up” yet. In many aspects, I still feel the same way that I felt when I was a teenager. But make no mistake about it, watching my baby girl turn 21 years old definitely puts me one step closer in my search to feel grown up. Oh, to be young again…

The Helders Family Loves Life in Scripps Ranch by BECCA BARR | photo by Zeena Gregg Photography

esleigh and Mark Helders knew exactly what they wanted from a community. “We wanted a neighborhood with good schools and to make friends with people in the same community,” Lesleigh shared, “a place where neighbors get together, help each other out, carpool, and gather for events.” They found what they were looking for in Old Scripps Ranch, and have lived there since 2005. Their favorite thing about Scripps Ranch is the people, and they especially love the village-like feeling the area offers. Their daughters have found a home in Scripps Ranch as well. Nancie (16) is a junior at Scripps Ranch High School, and Hana (14) is a freshman. Nancie is an artist, enjoys anime and Japanese Vocaloid music, and is interested in biology and astronomy. Hana is a cheerleader, loves to create beautiful desserts, fosters kittens, and does crafts. Both are Girl Scouts. The entire Helders family gives back to their community. Lesleigh and Mark volunteer at their church, First Unitarian Universalist Church of San Diego, which is where they first met. They help with religious education, rummage sales, church camp, the board, and various committees. Lesleigh has also spent time volunteering at Jerabek Elementary School and Marshall Middle School. Currently she is an administrator for the local Buy Nothing Scripps Ranch group. Mark is an Old Pro and helps each year with the annual Fourth of July Fun Run. Hana volunteers for Pop Warner, training Flag-aged girls in cheerleading. Nancie raises money each Fourth of July for cancer research, setting up a Pink Lemonade for a Cure stand. Cancer research is a focus near and dear to the Helders’ hearts. In April of this year, Lesleigh was diagnosed with breast cancer. She has already completed chemotherapy, and after getting radiation “I will have officially kicked cancer’s booty!” exclaimed Lesleigh. Lesleigh is an executive assistant at UC San Diego, and Mark is an operations manager at Crystal Forwarding Inc. Their anniversary falls on April Fool’s Day. “Mark loves it because he can remember it!” said Lesleigh. When not working and going to school, the family enjoys socializing with friends and camping. They have many pets, including two dogs, two cats, and five chickens. Interestingly, they are direct descendants of Governor William Bradford, who came over on the Mayflower! The Helders are thrilled to be part of Scripps Ranch. “In Scripps Ranch people care about their families, friends, and community,“ Lesleigh affirmed, “and they are willing to reach out to others.”

hannon Anderson has over 25 years of hands-on experience handling and training animals. For 20 of those years, she worked as an animal care specialist for SeaWorld San Diego. “I trained animals for husbandry procedures (medical exams like blood samples and ultrasounds) as well as working with animals that were injured, ill, or pregnant,” recalled Shannon. About 15 years ago, Shannon started focusing on professionally training dogs. During that time, she was a volunteer for the San Diego Sheriff Department Search and Rescue K9 Unit with her own German Shepard dog, Sage. “I am still active volunteering for the Sheriff Department helping the new handlers and their pups with general obedience training and agility work as needed,” explained Shannon. With an exceptional resume and impressive educational background – graduating summa cum laude with a B.S. in Psychology – Shannon started her own dog-training business, Total K9 Training, in 2006. “I wanted to start working with families to help bridge the gap between humans and dogs,” stated Shannon. “I am not a franchise company and pride myself on my educational background and practical life experience.”

Holiday at the Farmers Market
Scripps Hospitals Ranked First in San Diego
A Scripps Ranch tradition returns this year – Santa and Mrs. Claus will be making their 16th annual visit to the Scripps Ranch Farmers Market. Stop by 10380 Spring Canyon Rd. on Saturday, Dec. 23 between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. for photo opportunities, treats, activities for the kids, and a free winter penguin treasure hunt. Then, sit back at any of the 15 bistro tables to enjoy the live holiday music. The market is open from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. every Saturday. It’s run by longtime Scripps Ranch residents Bev and Mike Cassity, who strive to create a welcoming, family-friendly community destination every weekend. This is the market’s 16th year in Scripps Ranch. Learn more at www.srfm.org or www.facebook.com/scrippsranchfarmersmarket.
The combined programs of Scripps Green Hospital and Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla were recently ranked No. 1 in the San Diego region, No. 6 in California, and among the best in the nation in eight specialties on the U.S. News & World Report’s annual Best Hospitals list. The U.S. News rankings recognize the nation’s top 50 out of 4,658 hospitals that excel in treating patients with the most challenging healthcare needs. Scripps La Jolla and Scripps Green hospitals were also designated as highperforming in several other areas and achieved the highest possible score on performance treating nine relatively common adult procedures and conditions. “Ranking No. 1 in San Diego and among the best in the nation is the result of the hard work of our physicians, nurses, and staff who focus every day on always getting better,” said Chris Van Gorder, President and CEO of Scripps Health. “While we are deeply honored by this recognition, it’s really our patients who are the winners because they have access to outstanding healthcare right here at home.”
Garden of Lights Each night after the sun goes down, from Dec. 2 to 23 and 26 to 30, the San Diego Botanic Garden in Encinitas will be transformed into a dazzling winter wonderland during the Garden of Lights. PowPAC Presents Making God Laugh
2017 Veteran of the Year
PowPAC, Poway’s Community Theatre, continues a season of laughter with Making God Laugh, running Nov. 10 through Dec. 17. The comedy by Sean Grennan follows the lives of a typical American family through 30 years of shared holidays, starting in 1980. The cast of characters includes Ruthie, Bill, and their grown children – a priest, an aspiring actress, and a former football star – and over the course of the play, old family rituals come head to head with ancient tensions and changing circumstances. Making God Laugh is directed by Brent A. Stringfield and produced by Merrill Gill and Ruth Woodbeck. The cast includes Linda Englund as Ruthie, John Wilcox as Bill, Jack Holdeman as Richard, Shelby Blackwood as Maddie, Alex Contreras as Thomas, and Michele Dixon as the housekeeper. The show runs for five weekends, with performances on Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. There are no performances Thanksgiving weekend. Find tickets and learn more at www.powpac.org.
A number of Scripps Ranch students recently learned they’d been selected as National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists for the 2018 competition. Scripps Ranch High School semifinalists were Colin Snyder, Gracie Richards, Hyounjun Chang, Isabella Sferraa, Jonathan Luo, Joonhyuk Lee, Matthew-Keane Wang, Melba Nuzen, Patrick Wildenhain, Poorvi Datta, and Ryan Cantrell. Two other Scripps Ranch seniors were among the 13 students at The Bishop’s School recently named as semifinalists – Claire Coats and Valerie Fan. The students entered the competition – along with over 1.6 million high school juniors across the country – by taking the Preliminary SAT/ National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test last year. Of the huge entry pool, only 16,000 students are recognized as semifinalists this year. Approximately 90 percent of semifinalists are expected to advance to the finalist level, where they will be in the running for 7,500 National Merit Scholarships for Spring 2018. Selection is based on students’ skills, accomplishments, and potential for success in college programs.
Assemblymember Brian Maienschein recently recognized Stuart. N. Hedley as the 2017 Veteran of the Year in the 77th Assembly District. Hedley served 20 years in the United States Navy, and was awarded numerous medals over the years. He was aboard the USS West Virginia during the Dec. 7, 1941 Pearl Harbor attack, and in 2005 was honored as the Pearl Harbor Survivor Association’s Veteran of the Year. “Stuart Hedley’s courage and conviction was demonstrated time and time again throughout his career in the United States Navy,” shared Maienschein. “It is our duty to remember and honor those who serve and protect our nation.” Hedley retired from active duty in 1960 and continued serving his community, including 21 years of involvement with the La Mesa-Spring Valley School District, conducting inspections for MSC ships and naval aircraft carriers, and participation in the Pearl Harbor Survivors Association. He has lived in Clairemont since the 1950s.

Q&A HOW DID YOUR VISION FOR ZCODE MAGAZINES BEGIN? I was lucky enough to have a few articles published about me when I played football in high school. It was very exciting. I still have those articles. I wanted to create a local magazine that made people feel good. A magazine that people looked forward to receiving in their mailboxes. A magazine specifically for the neighborhoods that we call home, with colorful photos and a variety of interesting articles. SINCE ITS CONCEPTION IN 2009, IN WHAT WAY HAVE THE MAGAZINES DEVELOPED MOST? Talent! I have been fortunate to work with an incredibly talented group of people that share the ZCode vision. magazines (editorial and design) is unparalleled in the community magazine arena. WHAT HAS BEEN THE MOST REWARDING PART OF ZCODE’S JOURNEY SO FAR? Having people come up to me and tell me how much they enjoy reading the magazine. It never gets old! WHAT ARE YOUR LONG-TERM GOALS FOR THE MAGAZINES? Honestly, it’s to keep publishing magazines that are meaningful to the local residents. And if we are able to grow our family of magazines along the way by adding additional communities, then that’s a bonus!

ORIGIN DENTAL
Quality Care and Dedicated Staff That Will Keep Your Family Smiling by LINDA FRABL | photo provided by Origin Dental
O
rigin Dental is a new state-of-the-art facility that opened in November of 2016 and is operated by well-seasoned dentist Victor Tran, DDS. Dr. Tran doublemajored in Integrative Biology and Genetics & Plant Biology at UC Berkeley. He later received his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the prestigious UC San Francisco. Dr. Tran made the move to sunny San Diego shortly after graduation and has not looked back. Dr. Tran has harnessed his years of experience to create his vision of what a dental office should be. His new facility took a year to design and build, and it boasts a warm and friendly office environment. It’s now been a year since the office opened, and Dr. Tran and his staff continue to stay true to the original ideals, and to maintain the same high standards he envisioned over a year ago. “We will always aim to make our patients’ visits fun, educational, and engaging. Dentistry should be a positive experience, and we are diligent in creating this type of encounter during each of our patients’ visits.” One of the many reasons patients are enjoying Origin Dental is because Dr. Tran respects the value of their time. Appointments are never overbooked, so there is never a wait. Origin Dental is even open for business on Saturdays, and Dr. Tran makes himself available after hours for those unexpected dental emergencies. “There is never a question of whether I am available for my patients,” explained Dr. Tran. “Our patients come first, and we are honored by the opportunity to treat them.”
The team at Origin Dental especially prides themselves on utilizing the latest advances in technology. Dr. Tran emphasized that his entire staff is “passionate about the field of dentistry and providing the best care. We as a team regularly take continuing education courses to keep up-to-date with the latest in our field.” Since the office opened in 2016, they have had the opportunity to add new technology to the office, including a new stateof-the-art operatory and a 3D Cone Beam X-ray machine. “These tools enable us to see deeper and in more detail, make better diagnoses, and provide extremely accurate treatment for our patients, especially those looking to have dental implants placed.” Catering to patients of any age, this fullservice and affordable family dental practice incorporates everything you would need from a dental visit. This includes but is not limited to: cleanings, exams, fillings, crowns, bridges, cosmetic dentistry such as veneers and whitening, implants, wisdom teeth extractions, dentures, and root canals. The main objective that Origin Dental strives to fulfill is to ensure that everyone who walks through the front door feels like family. “Our goal isn’t just to treat our patients’ oral health. We also want to get to know our patients and develop real relationships with them and their family,” clarified Dr. Tran. “Dentistry can sometimes be a scary thought to patients, but it shouldn’t be that way. Our philosophy is simple;

that is, to treat our patients with care, respect, and honesty. The greatest gratification comes from seeing my patients’ beautiful, healthy smiles upon leaving our practice.” During his free time, Dr. Tran enjoys experiencing new cuisines and traveling the world with his wife. He is extremely passionate about making time for continuing education, and is currently on the path to becoming a fellow of both the American Academy of Implant Dentistry (AAID) and the Academy of General Dentistry (AGD).

aking math make sense is the goal at Mathnasium. Going far beyond traditional tutoring models, students at Mathnasium are taught in a way that makes sense to them through the creation of individualized learning plans and one-on-one instruction. By combining this personalized learning with an encouraging, fun environment, students at Mathnasium are able to make great strides, whether it is to catch up, keep up, or get ahead. “The goal at Mathnasium is to help build student’s confidence in math,” explained Archi Kapoor, Center Director. “Whether your child is far behind or is already succeeding in math, Mathnasium offers the tools that enable a student to leap ahead.” Students are welcome to start at Mathnasium any time of the year. Due to the individualized nature of the program, Mathnasium can accommodate a variety of schedules. “Because it’s not a group class, you can schedule your sessions around your work and school schedules,” Archi said. Each session lasts an hour, and sessions are offered after school on weekdays and mornings on Saturdays.
Each session focuses on the student’s specific needs and utilizes the proven Mathnasium Method™. “It’s a relaxed and nurturing environment for kids to catch up or prepare for upcoming concepts,” Archi said. The students work one-on-one with an instructor, who all have degrees in math, computer science, or engineering and at least two to three years of teaching and tutoring experience. The instructors work with students on Mathnasium material and school homework to teach the foundations and then finish each session with interactive math games to promote students’ strategic thinking and logic. Additional sessions focus on getting students ready for quizzes and tests at school. The goal at Mathnasium is to build a strong support system for all students. This is done through frequent communications with the students, parents, and math teachers at school. This three-way partnership is the key in helping students succeed in math. When a student first begins at Mathnasium, an initial assessment is scheduled and then reviewed with the parents. From there, the Mathnasium professionals create an

Neighbors Looking After Neighbors NEW NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH SIGNS INSTALLED IN SCRIPPS RANCH
T
he Scripps Ranch Civic Association (SRCA) Neighborhood Watch committee gives Scripps Ranch residents an opportunity to look out for their community and help their neighbors. It’s part of the larger San Diego Police Department (SDPD) Neighborhood Watch program, which encourages local citizens to cooperate with law enforcement and help reduce crime in their communities. SRCA Neighborhood Watch hosts the area’s annual National Night Out on the first Tuesday of every August, as well as providing more routine services. Part of the Neighborhood Watch mission is visibility in the community, and SRCA President Bob Ilko, SDPD Northeastern Lt. Duane Voss, and Councilmember Mark Kersey recently unveiled
new Neighborhood Watch signs. As the representative for District 5, including Scripps Ranch, Kersey secured the funding for nearly 50 new Neighborhood Watch signs for the Scripps Ranch community. “Scripps Ranch is one of the most engaged communities in San Diego, with neighbors looking out for each other,” Kersey shared. “This community has come together through devastating wildfires, and that same determined, unified spirit resonates in Neighborhood Watch.” Kersey added, “When citizens organize themselves and work with law enforcement to keep a trained eye and ear on their communities, they reduce opportunities for crime by simply demonstrating a presence.” Learn more about SRCA Neighborhood Watch and how you can get involved at www.scrippsranch.org/watch.

Following in Her Father’s Footsteps, Germaine Maehler Is Passionate About the Automobile Industry by MICHELLE TREMBLAY | photo courtesy of Frank Motors Photo Department
G
ermaine Maehler grew up in the automobile industry. Her father – who immigrated with Germaine’s mother from Germany to the United States in 1955 – owned car dealerships for the extent of his career. “My dad started out as a Porsche mechanic and eventually opened up his own dealership,” recalled Germaine. Her father’s first dealership sold Porsche and Audi cars and took the family to Tucson, AZ for several years. “We came back to Thousand Oaks, CA where my dad opened a Volkswagen/Fiat/ Jaguar dealership,” Germaine noted. She worked at her father’s Thousand Oaks dealership for five years before taking a fleet assistant position in North Hollywood at a Toyota dealership. “Most of my education came from working for my dad at his car dealership,” said Germaine. “He taught me great work ethics and taught me all the ins and outs of the car business.” Watching her father at work paid off for Germaine. Within her first year of work as fleet assistant at North Hollywood Toyota, Germaine was promoted to the role of fleet manager for the dealership. While in Los Angeles, Germaine frequently traveled south to visit her brother, a United States Navy pilot stationed in San Diego. “I always enjoyed taking the train to San Diego to visit him,” shared Germaine. “I eventually decided to take a fleet manager position in San Diego.” She settled into the Scripps Ranch community in 1989. “I enjoy living in Scripps Ranch because it is a family-oriented community and centrally located to everything” said Germaine. Today, Germaine is the fleet manager for Frank Toyota, located in National City. “I sell and lease cars to private customers, which come from referrals and repeat customers,” described Germaine. “I also sell to credit union members, auto brokers… and help manage the inventory and allocation for the dealership.” Throughout her career, Germaine has been recognized as a Top 50 Sales Professional in the nation over the last 30 years and as one of the top 14 salespeople in Southern California. “The most rewarding part of my career is making the car-buying experience a smooth and pleasant experience for my clients,” shared Germaine. In her downtime, Germaine enjoys visiting her mother in Temecula and traveling with her daughter. One piece of career advice Germaine would offer to readers is, “to go to work and focus on what you want to get accomplished. Have a great attitude, and always remember to smile each and every day.”

Coming Soon – The Ethical Quandary
O
ver the last few years, there has been a surge in the use of “Coming Soon” advertising for homes. The increase can be traced to Zillow’s introduction of a feature by the same name, but has expanded to the common use by real estate agents of sign riders promoting homes “Coming Soon” to the market. It seems like a straightforward idea, but recently, the National Association of Realtors came out with a strong warning about the practice: “A broker’s decision to market a seller’s property as ‘coming soon’ must always be made based on the client’s informed determination of what best serves the client’s interests… failing to disclose the pros and cons of a limited marketing plan such as ‘coming soon’ advertising, can violate state real estate license laws and regulations…” I like the “Coming Soon“ advertising because if people are driving around looking at houses, I want them to know we have one coming on the market and they might want to wait a few days before making an offer on another property. So why is there opposition to a seemingly simple strategy? Well, everything a broker does has to be for the benefit of the seller, not the broker. Here are a couple of the concerns: • It can be seen as restrictive in terms of Fair Housing Laws. • If the home is sold before being exposed to the entire market, the seller is missing the chance for a competitive situation and therefore cannot be confident of getting the highest price.
• The broker or agent can be seen as trying to represent both sides of the transaction – increasing his or her income at the expense of the seller receiving offers from the open marketplace. I believe that the “Coming Soon“ strategy can be beneficial, but needs to be used carefully. While there are definitely stories of abuse, brokerages watch this closely. If an agent has a pattern of representing both sides on homes that never hit the market, the agent and brokerage are at risk of being sued and losing their license. With this in mind, it has always been and will continue to be our policy that if a home is marketed as “Coming Soon,” offers are not considered until the home is on the MLS. It’s the only way to put the sellers’ best interests first.

WINTER
LIGHTS Enjoy the Sights and Lights this Season in the Best-Decorated Local Neighborhoods by LAINEY KRAL
A
s the weather turns colder, San Diegans pull boxes out of storage and get ready to brighten up the winter season. The tradition of decorating homes with electric lights began taking off in the 1960s as a next step from decorated Christmas trees, and has since spread around the world. Colorful holiday and seasonal decorations can be found in most San Diegan neighborhoods, but some streets stand out for their over-the-top festive displays. Wait until the sun goes down and bring the whole family for a tour of one – or more – of these twinkling destinations.
