About Last Night
T
Derrick Breaux Publisher
here’s nothing quite like a good party. It is often the end result of a lot of work and preparation. The reward. A gathering of friends, business associates, family, coworkers – many people coming together that share something in common. As I write this issue’s note, I find myself with a little extra hop in my step and a smile on my face. Of course, it doesn’t hurt that today is a Friday – and the end of a long and productive week. But what’s really on my mind is last night’s ZCode Magazines’ epic party! With the launch of our eleventh publication, 08/10 Magazine, covering the North Carlsbad zip codes of 92008 and 92010, we decided to make the official announcement with a grand celebration – ZCode style. And we felt that the iconic Carlsbad Flower Fields was the perfect venue – the Paul Ecke Jr. Family Barn made for a very cool setting. So why was last night’s party so great? Was it the fact that we were blessed to have over 300 guests ranging from local business owners, politicians, and school officials to friends and family members of the ZCode Team? You bet it was! Last night was not only a night to celebrate the launch of 08/10 Magazine, but it was a celebration of community in general. You see, it is my belief that most of the people that live in North San Diego County live here by choice and not necessity. The vast majority of our neighbors are proud to live in their community. In fact, they love living in their community. It is this bond that makes everything work. It is this bond that makes each of the unique communities of North County so special. I am surrounded by an incredible group of people that make up the ZCode Team. Day in and day out they are in the office busting their butts and working hard to create magazines that we hope people want to read. Everyone has a unique part of the puzzle. It was an amazing experience to see our team mingling and socializing with many of the people that have either been featured in one of the ZCode Magazines or people that are loyal readers of the magazines. Having the ability for the team to connect faces with names, laugh and socialize make it all worth it. There are many moving parts to publishing hyper-local community magazines. First and foremost, it takes the vision, determination, and desire to produce a great product. For that, I would like to give a heartfelt “thank you” to the ZCode crew. Of equal importance is the loyalty of the local residents and advertisers – both of which ZCode Magazines would not exist without. We all need to thank them. So last night we celebrated. We celebrated you. We celebrated community. We celebrated family, friends, and coworkers. We celebrated being the best that we all can be. We celebrated an incredible journey that I like to call PASSION. I want to thank you for being a loyal reader. And thanks for supporting ZCode Magazines and supporting the advertisers that are responsible for delivering this magazine to your mailboxes.

fter growing up in Canada with her American mom, Julie Wright moved to the United States with her husband and toddlers. Seven years ago they moved to the San Dieguito School district and relocated their offices to Solana Beach to ensure their sons received quality schooling. Both boys currently attend Torrey Pines High School. Julie demonstrated her passion for writing early when she wrote and published a school newspaper as a 3rd grader. Fully expecting to pursue a career in journalism, Julie accidentally discovered the fun and challenging public relations field. She revealed, “I realized that there is just as much storytelling and creative writing in public relations as in many traditional writing jobs.” This past March she spoke about writing careers at the Canyon Crest Academy Writers Conference and hopes she inspired young writers to pursue public relations. In 1998 Julie founded (W)right On Communications. As president, she oversees her team, client programs and develops business. Current projects include a press trip to Kings Canyon and Yosemite National Parks, and an annual 5K/10K fundraiser for Toward Maximum independence (TMI). The press trip involves securing travel writers to experience the destinations, attractions and hotel properties her business represents, and TMI helps developmentally challenged people find jobs. Prestigious awards Julie won include a 40 Under 40 award from San Diego Metropolitan in 2006, the Leadership North County Fran Aleshire Award in 2009, and the Women Who Mean Business award in 2010. Julie shared, “I love to attend the Women Who Mean Business awards each year because the stories of each recipient always reinvigorates my own commitment to my business and my vision of leadership.” Julie advises women to pursue the vision of their businesses succeeding wildly by surrounding themselves with talented, reliable people, and by making sure the journey is fun by not saying yes when they should be saying no. To support her community, Julie is a volunteer on the President’s Council at Cal State University San Marcos and a trustee of the Tri-City Hospital Foundation. Julie believes education is important and enables medical staff to support NICU babies and families and diagnose and treat cancer. Julie plans to expand her business to allow her to have more time to support her sons, taste more champagne, shop in the Cedros Design District and run. She recently completed a half marathon in Carlsbad and wants her next race to include new scenery. ¢

ere at ZCode Media, our employees are like our family, and our magazines and readers are like family too. Carlsbad’s family of publications, including 92009 and 92011 Magazines, is now complete with the introduction of 08/10 Magazine. This past April, ZCode Media held a launch party for the new magazine at the Paul Ecke Jr. Family Barn amidst the picturesque Carlsbad Flower Fields. With the flowers in full bloom and the guests in full smiles, it was a night to remember. The packed house enjoyed delicious food, scrumptious desserts, and hot-ticket raffle items with over $14,000 in prizes. All $1,060 raised from the raffle went to the Ronald McDonald House Charities of San Diego. The night concluded with a few words from our co-owners, ZCode Media Publisher Derrick Breaux and Creative Director Tyler McElhaney, who premiered a riveting video on our newest addition to the ZCode bunch. Join us in welcoming our newest magazine to the family, 08/10 Magazine. ¢

el Mar and Solana Beach residents will soon be settling into their beach chairs, laying out their towels, and diving head first into icy cool ocean water for summer, but for now, they are counting off the days until the kickoff event of the summer hits: the thirty-fifth anniversary celebration of Fiesta Del Sol. The Fiesta will take place on May 31 and June 1 and is presented by the Solana Beach Chamber of Commerce in collaboration with the Belly Up and the City of Solana Beach. The Fiesta brings a variety of people together, from music lovers, musicians and performers, to families, children, local vendors and businesses – the event gathers quite a large mix of a crowd. Close to
50,000 people were in attendance at last year’s event. This year’s event will be held at Fletcher Cove Beach Park and will have a myriad of activities to partake in, including two days of music, arts and crafts, a children’s area, shopping specials and food vendors. There will be beer gardens and wine tastings for those looking for a cool beverage, and the Lions Club will return to serve wine and raise money for their charity. Vendor applications for the Fiesta are currently open. To apply or learn more about the event visit www.solanabeachchamber.com/fiestadelsol. ¢

Throughout the week, speakers such as Tina Mickelson and Mimi Kirk spoke on balancing work with family and health, and Operation Ball Gown collected gently used gowns for donation to military wives who needed them. The week concluded with an Inspiration Conference held at the Harrah’s Rincon Casino and Resort. Attendees were treated to truly inspiring speeches from figures such as Kim Coles, Elizabeth Smart, Tanya Brown, Kimberly Dozier, Kristen Kavanaugh, Piper Kerman, and Suzanne Somers. Panels of admirable women discussed topics such as finding resilience in the workplace with “High Heels Through the Glass Ceiling” and reaching for higher goals in “Coffee With the Corner Office.” Visit www.sdwomensweek.com for a complete list of the speakers who were in attendance. ¢

he first time Glen Gordon served on a church mission to Ethiopia, he met a single mother who was HIV positive. “Every day she would get up at dawn and work until dusk creating dresses to sell at the market so that she could put her 10-year-old daughter through school, pay rent, buy her medications, and eat,” shared Glen. Her goal was to see her daughter receive a higher education. Glen Gordon is a junior at Canyon Crest Academy in Carmel Valley. He is shaped by what he’s learning abroad and in class. His favorite subjects are history, geography and world politics. “Learning about the past gives me an infinite archive of insight on why things are what they are today and how they might be tomorrow,” revealed Glen. He is one of four who represents the academy’s Academic WorldQuest team, a global affairs and U.S. foreign policy-based knowledge competition. The team competed in the national competition in Washington D.C. in April. As a delegate to American Legion California Boys’ State, he’ll attend the

Conserve, Conserve, Conserve! by SUPERVISOR DAVE ROBERTS
The
vote by the San Diego County Water Authority’s Board of Directors in February was unanimous and the message was clear: conserve, conserve, conserve. Drought conditions in parts of California are as bad as they have been in a century. As the county’s representative to the Water Authority, I joined my colleagues from twenty-four member agencies in support of furthering conservation. The directors’ vote initiated the agency’s Water Shortage and Drought Response Plan to conserve as much stored water as possible so it can be made available where it is needed most. Last activated in 2007, the plan is designed to preserve the water held in storage and to minimize the impacts of supply challenges. The board also approved alerting all of its member agencies that the region is at Level 1 Drought Watch. That means that water district officials must identify specific actions necessary for their communities, such as repairing leaks quickly, limiting irrigation to the evening and early-morning hours and expanding use of recycled and non-potable water. As we lay plans to conserve, we can feel good about our track
24 • DelSolMagazine.com • May | June 2014
record. San Diego County has reduced its water consumption by 27% since 2007, even though our population has increased. The Water Authority, to its credit, has greatly expanded the county’s storage capacity and has made capital investments and negotiated agreements to diversify the sources of our water portfolio. Since January, when I took over as the county’s water board representative, I have toured the Colorado River Aqueduct and the Sacramento/San Joaquin Bay Delta. Those trips drove home an important point: that most of the water we consume travels great distances, and at great cost, to reach us. And when water flows from our faucets, it’s no accident. To maintain our quality of life for our homes, businesses and farms, we must continue to diversify our supplies and to expand water recycling and reuse. And of course, conservation is key. To learn more about how to conserve water visit the Water Authority’s website at www.sdcwa.org. ¢ Dave Roberts represents the Third District on the San Diego County Board of Supervisors.

the couple and their three young boys. Jack, 6, attends kindergarten at Solana Vista Elementary, while Emerson, 4, goes to preschool at the Child Development Center. Baby number three was born in late April. In addition to the school district’s excellent reputation, they appreciate the small town feel and tight-knit community. The family can often be found out and about, from the local playgrounds and tide pools to sushi and frozen yogurt. During the week, Alex is a partner at The Compass Pointe Group at Morgan Stanley Wealth Management. He also serves as the Honorary Mayor of Rancho Bernardo. Samantha, in addition to her full work load with the boys, volunteers for The David Fellers Healing Art Foundation, fundraising to send medical supplies to Nicaragua. Alex also finds time to give back through the La Jolla Golden Triangle Rotary Club, where he serves as the Chair of Community Service. “It is extremely rewarding to have a positive impact on an individual’s life, no matter how brief it might be,” Alex shared. The couple carves out a little time for themselves, too, typically on the basketball court. While life before kids included many pickup games, today Alex and Samantha settle for a game of Horse. “Here’s the shocker, Samantha is undefeated against me in Horse. I will feel like I have won the Super Bowl the day I am victorious,” Alex said. After the sun sets, the couple occasionally continues their date with a glass of wine at Carruth Cellars and a show at the Belly Up. The Monroe family has certainly found their sweet spot in Solana Beach. “From individuals and families to businesses it really has a great vibe,” Alex acknowledged. ¢

SUNNY SMILES KIDS PEDIATRIC DENTISTRY EMPHASIZES QUALITY CARE

magine an atmosphere and experience so inviting, children and their parents want to return routinely. This was the concept Jacquelyn K. Do, DDS envisioned while taking detailed notes of what she liked and disliked about the dental practices she worked for in New York City. Using her fond memories attending summer fairs and her love of sunny cities, she created a dental practice with a carnival theme. At Sunny Smiles Kids Pediatric Dentistry (SSKPD), her patients encounter smiling, friendly faces and can engage in fun activities like a prize wheel, a photo booth and a bouncy ball

important to me that each family has individualized and personalized care.” As a result, parents remain at ease as well. They know their children are safe, secure and receiving the best care. Another benefit of SSKPD is that as a new practice, it has the latest technology. It has X-ray systems with the lowest doses of radiation and a fluorescence cavity indicator that detects the very beginning of a cavity. Additionally, Jacquelyn K. Do, DDS and her assistants are well trained. Jacquelyn received her dental degree from Columbia University and completed her residency in pediatric dentistry at New York University. She is certified by the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and was awarded with top honors during her graduating year. She practiced for ten years in New York City before returning to California. Each of her assistants has over five years of experience in pediatric dentistry, and her most experienced assistant has over ten years of experience and graduated from UC Davis with a bachelor’s in child psychology before receiving her RDAEF2 certification from UCLA. Open for only a year and half, SSKPD has been thriving because satisfied parents have been sharing their experiences. The staff genuinely cares and welcomes new patients aged newborn to 18 years. ¢

The San Diego County Fair Brings Big Names and Blue Ribbons to the Del Mar Fairgrounds photos provided by the San Diego County Fair
This
summer, from Saturday, June 7 through Sunday, July 6, the 2014 San Diego County Fair becomes The Fab Fair as a celebration of the 50th anniversary of the British Invasion.
This year the Fair features nearly 24,000 performers from nationally known bands to children’s dance troupes. Blue ribbons will be handed out to everything from the best zucchini to the best school yearbook. Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts raise the flags at the daily opening ceremonies at the Fair and the Fourth of July celebration is an event that no resident can miss. With competitions, exhibits, rides, concerts and more, the amount of fun that the San Diego County Fair brings to Del Mar is almost too much to squeeze into Del Sol Magazine, but we’re going to try it anyway!

:::: COVER FEATURE
HISTORY Way back in 1880, when San Diego was home to only a couple thousand residents, a group of people decided to get together for the first agricultural fair in San Diego County. The goal was to share ideas, and compete to see who had the best fruit, vegetables, and horses. In 1936, the Fair found its current and permanent home with the help from a half-million dollar grant from the Works Progress Administration. The 22nd District Agricultural Association (an agency of the State of California) owns the land and facilities and organizes the San Diego County Fair every year. The Del Mar Thoroughbred Club leases the facilities for its live meet each year. Attendance grew steadily throughout the 1930s with the combination of the County Fair and the Del Mar Turf Club. Bing Crosby’s involvement gave Del Mar a national stage with Hollywood’s elite as regular guests. In 1942, the Fair was halted due to the start of World War II, and the fairgrounds became a training facility and temporary quarters for military personnel. The facility was even used as a manufacturing plant for parts for the B-17 “Flying Fortress” bomber. With the end of the war, the Fair resumed in 1946, and a new symbol was born: Don Diego. He would remain the most-recognized symbol of the County Fair for four decades to come. From 1947 through 2004, the Fairest of the Fair Pageant selected one young woman to represent the Fair and in the early years, escorted through the grounds by Don Diego. The most notable winner of the pageant was a young La Jolla woman by the name of Raquel Tejada, who went on to become Raquel Welch of movie and television fame. The event that takes place each year at the Del Mar Fairgrounds has operated under different names throughout the years, including The San Diego Fair and Citrus Show, Southern California Exposition, The Del Mar Fair, and the currently familiar San Diego County Fair. Although it is a state agency, the 22nd DAA uses no tax dollars to operate the Fairgrounds. Its operating revenue is generated entirely by the Fair and other activities on the grounds. The 22nd DAA has an annual operating budget in excess of $50 million (approximately $20 million of which is the budget for the Fair), employs a full-time, year-round staff of nearly 160, and is the source of seasonal employment for more than 3,000 people. T. PAT STUBBS HAS THE DEL MAR SUMMER CONCERT SERIES “DOWN PAT” by KELLEY GUSICH | photos by Soul of Photography
T.
Patrick Stubbs loves the small town feel of Del Mar. “It reminds me of what the North Coast of San Diego County was when I grew up.” A resident of Del Sol since 1996, T. Pat has been living the dream. He loves gardening and landscape design, but his heart really belongs to helping the community. “I can’t remember a time in my life when I wasn’t involved in a volunteer project to make the world a better place,” he confided. Currently giving his time as Baseball Liason for the Torrey Pines High School Foundation, T. Pat provides leadership and does everything the Foundation needs him to do. He had previously served as the Del Mar Summer Concert Chairperson from 1998 to 2004, and an invitation to run the concerts again was met with eager acceptance. He is working with a committee on a myriad of responsibilities that includes selecting the bands, securing sponsors to help fund the concerts, managing the events on site and coordinating with the city of Del Mar to ensure they run smoothly. “Thank goodness there are a lot of people involved with making these events so successful!” he enthused. Volunteerism provides T. Pat with many opportunities to “enhance the community’s scene.” If he were offered one wish to help his organizations, it would be to give Del Mar a well-funded and vibrant art community. He’d like to see displays of public art throughout the village that would enhance its walking nature, and he’d love to be able to offer national acts the opportunity to “play the park” in the summer concert series. Any creative doers who’d like to help that wish come true can contact the Foundation. For the Del Mar Summer Concert Series, T. Pat feels his biggest accomplishment is keeping the series alive and elevating the quality of events each year. He believes that when you throw a good party, the money follows to help fund the programs. “My favorite part about the Summer Twilight Concerts is looking out from the stage and seeing all the smiles – young and old, male and female, cross cultural.” Del Mar is lucky to have T. Patrick Stubbs on board as an involved community member and inspired leader. He has this volunteer thing “down Pat.” ¢

have all heard the sport of baseball called the all-American sport, but what exactly does ‘all’ encompass? Well, for children with special needs, ‘all’ represents an all-inclusive baseball league, and thanks to organizations like the Miracle League of San Diego (MLSD), they too can participate in the game. MLSD provides special needs children ages 5 and up with a safe, fun and organized league to play baseball. They have two locations in San Diego – Engel Family Park in Del Mar and Green Field at Coronado High School in Coronado. Each Miracle League game consists of
two innings and lasts for one hour. Every player is given the opportunity to bat, every player scores, and a tie score always shows up on the scoreboard after the final inning. Children are paired up with a buddy, a system which fosters friendship, security and confidence among the players and their families. “Our mission is to ensure that every participant walks away saying they had a great day,” related Dan Engel, CoFounder of MLSD. Coaches and game day volunteers are an integral part of the organization. Each team is assigned at least three coaches who are

A Tribute to Rachel Dawson
THE DON DIEGO SCHOLARSHIP FOUNDATION HONORS ONE OF THEIR OWN
The
Don Diego Legacy Brick Fountain located in the Plaza de Mexico at the Del Mar Fairgrounds is paved with the legacies of loved ones. Near this fountain are the Legacy Bricks, which honor the achievements of the Don Diego Scholarship Foundation recipients. Almost one year and three months since her passing, the brick which remains as a permanent memento of the memory of Rachel Dawson, serves as a positive stepping stone to inspire fellow scholars. Rachel received a scholarship in 1996 for her exhibition of a prize-winning family quilt at the San Diego County Fair. She received additional scholarship funds which allowed her to pursue her dreams and attend the Rhode Island School of Design and Pasadena Art Center, and later earned a BFA in costume design from Cal Arts. Rachel struggled with leukemia and eventually lost her battle against the disease at the age of 34 on Jan. 20, 2013. Donna Dawson, Rachel’s mother, remembers her as a vibrant, compassionate, and thoughtful daughter. “She was like a comet, impressing people with her creativity, kindness and generosity, and then suddenly was gone. Two months after Rachel died, I received a beautiful bouquet of birthday roses from her. She had ordered them way ahead of time, in case she would not be here to give them to me herself,” Donna remarked. Rachel’s memory lives on at the Del Mar Fairgrounds. On June 7, Rachel’s brick, along with other Don Diego Legacy Brick Contributors, will be honored at Opening Day at the San Diego County Fair.
Proceeds from each brick support Don Diego’s mission of providing college scholarships to outstanding San Diego County high school seniors who have participated in Del Mar Fairgrounds events, as well as grants for agricultural education. To buy a Legacy Brick to commemorate a special occasion or person in your life visit www.dondiegoscholarship.org/product/legacy-brick-program. ¢

The Appropriate Role for Cash in Your Portfolio by Richard H. Fogg, CFP®
T
here’s an old saying in financial circles that “cash is king.” The actual meaning of this phrase varies depending on the context. Some investors appeared to buy into this philosophy during the market’s turbulent period from 2007 to 2009, and moved significant sums of money out of stock and bond investments and into cash-equivalent holdings like money market funds and bank CDs. That may have provided some short-term protection. But, as many are finding out in light of the stock market’s recovery over the last five years, holding too much cash can have a negative effect on long-term investment results. Cash can be an effective tool within a portfolio – but typically when used in a strategic way to help achieve long-term goals, not as a hiding place when the market is going through its inevitable downturns. The appropriate role for cash in your portfolio should be dictated by your investment goals. Here are some guidelines.
CASH DURING YOUR ACCUMULATION YEARS If you have years to let your money grow to meet future needs (retirement, tuition costs etc.), cash may play only a minor role in your portfolio. The appropriate percentage depends on your circumstances. One way people choose to invest their cash is by dollar cost averaging. Instead of investing a single lump sum all at once, you invest smaller amounts of money at
regular intervals (no matter how the market is performing). This strategy can’t guarantee a profit or protect against a loss in a declining market. But, over time your average cost per share is likely to be less than the average market share price.
CASH FOR AN INCOME PORTFOLIO Cash will typically play a more significant role for those in retirement who are drawing income from their portfolio. The key is to manage
cash appropriately. Given today’s low yields on money market funds and CDs, keeping too much money in cash may limit the amount of income you can afford to withdraw from your portfolio. One approach is to place a portion of your portfolio into cash or other short-term investments that have little or no risk of fluctuating in value. Another strategy is to set aside enough money to meet two-to-three years of income needs (in addition to other sources of income you have such as Social Security or a pension). Many people find that actively investing some of their money in the market may help them keep up with inflation or provide extra income. But, it varies for everyone. The types of investments you have and how much you choose to invest depends on your situation. In today’s low interest rate environment, it is more important than ever that you pay close to attention to the percentage of your assets held in cash-equivalent investments. Think about meeting with a local financial advisor to determine how to best manage the cash in your portfolio. ¢

BOYS & GIRLS CLUBS OF SAN DIEGUITO VISIT THE WHITE HOUSE
B
oys & Girls Clubs (BGC) of San Dieguito Chief Executive Officer, David H. Crean, and Chairman of the Board, Edward P. Wallace, paid a visit to Washington, D.C. along with over fifty of the largest Boys & Girls Clubs in the nation to partake in the first-ever BGC Day of Advocacy. Leaders from nearly 100 major metro Boys & Girls Clubs were invited to the event. “I am honored and privileged to be a part of such an outstanding event that can impact the Boys & Girls Club movement in such a positive way,” stated David. “It is my chance as the leader of this BGC San Dieguito to speak on behalf of this organization and make sure we can stay at the forefront as a leader in San Diego for youth programs and after school care.” The event took place during National Boys & Girls Clubs Week, and the major metro Boys & Girls Clubs were able to advocate for BGC by conveying the BGC message to members of Congress on Capitol Hill, building brand awareness, and congregating together to garner support for children’s lives across America. Major metro Boys & Girls Clubs represent clubs with a budget of $3 million and above, or clubs with a budget between $2.5 million and $3 million and located in a community that is in one of the top thirty DMA markets, or has a population of 500,000 or more. STRAWBERRY SERENADE Sweet Fun in the Sun by JESSICA WOODS | photos by Tyler McElhaney
S
trawberry season is here! This beloved red fruit is a favorite among San Diegans, served on plates and in recipes new and old. But for every recipe, you’ll want fresh strawberries to serve, and it doesn’t get much “fresher” than handpicked strawberries straight from the field. This season, grab your friends and family and head to one of San Diego’s strawberry farms, where you can pick as many berries as your strawberry heart desires. Driving north on the I-5, it’s hard to miss the vast strawberry field nestled in the hills of Carlsbad off Cannon Rd. This is home to The Carlsbad Strawberry Company, who invite groups as small as a couple to as large as school groups and organizations to come pick strawberries for themselves. Venture into the field with your friends and family for a lovely summer getaway. With groups of fifteen or more, they recommend you call ahead at 760-603-9608 for more information. The fields are open Monday through Friday, and picking is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Visit their website for farm stand locations and directions at www.carlsbadstrawberrycompany.com. Out east in Temecula is Kenny’s Strawberry Farm, where their strawberries are grown hydroponically. There’s no need to worry about dirt or mud, as the strawberries are elevated above the ground to where even small children can reach. The farm is open Friday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and you can visit their website to keep up-to-date with crop conditions at www.temeculavalleystrawberryfarms.com. ¢

too often the mortgage experience is left to more of an application taker than someone that can lay out a true mortgage strategy,” said JJ Jerotz, Vice President of Retail Sales-Mortgage Lending and Partner of Synergy One Lending, a locally-based mortgage banking firm delivering mortgage loans to home buyers or home owners looking to refinance their existing mortgage. “A mortgage is typically the largest financial obligation that someone will take out in their lifetime,” noted Jerotz. “This liability is not to be taken lightly and that is where I come in.” Synergy One Lending was formed in 2009 as a division of Security One Lending – one of the nation’s most well-known reverse mortgage banking firms. Founded by Torrey and Tyler Larsen, Tony Gaglione, and Bill Trask – who all have extensive experience in mortgage lending – Synergy One Lending has been consistently positioned as a market leader. Combining its local ownership with a low cost structure, the team at Synergy One Lending is confident they are offering clients an exceptional mortgage experience. “As a San Diego-based company, we are able to keep the process localized in town to make sure timing is of the essence

so we can create that wow experience for the borrower as well as for all parties involved in the process,” said Jerotz. “With the low cost structure of the company, it enables us to pass that savings on to the borrower and deliver low fees and the best of rates on a day-in, day-out basis.” The company’s motto: “Every Client. Every Time. No Exceptions. No Excuses,” is one that every employee “lives and breathes.” “In the end, it’s their company too,” noted Jerotz. With an emphasis on quality customer service, Jerotz and his team work hard at creating the right mortgage plan that meets the long-term goals of each client. “It is extremely important to find the strategy that fits your individual need,” stated Jerotz. “This is the part of my job that I love the most, which is creating the right plan for the individual or family that meets their long term financial goals as well as their immediate needs.” As a partner, Jerotz is able to have a hand in the decision-making process, “and stay in tune with our customer base,” he added. “In dealing first-hand with the borrower as well as the realtor community, I am able to help enhance our efficiencies so that we can be ahead of the ever changing world of lending and maintain our best in-class service levels.”

Del Mar Woman of the Year NANCY WEARE IS AWARDED FOR HER ACTIVE WORK IN THE DEL MAR COMMUNITY photos provided by JENELLE ZINGG
D
el Mar resident Nancy Weare was recently named one of Assemblywoman Toni Atkins’ 2014 Women of the Year for her formation of, involvement in, and dedication to the San Dieguito Lagoon Committee (SDLC), the River Valley Conservancy (RVC), and Del Mar Community Connection (DMCC). “I am extremely pleased and must admit it’s quite pleasant to be remembered for your contributions,” noted Nancy. Nancy’s involvement with nature conservation began in 1972 and was inspired by the developments constructed on the San Dieguito Lagoon. Nancy brought a group of local residents together to discuss preservation ideas, brought this vision to the City of Del Mar, and the San Dieguito Lagoon Committee was formed. The committee still plays an active role in preserving the beauty of the lagoons today, and with the assistance of government agencies and the City, helped develop the San Dieguito Lagoon Resource Enhancement Program. Nancy is also the founder of DMCC, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit which provides seniors with services and activities to help them maintain a dignified and safe life. Nancy found DMCC after seeing the emotional support her father received at a local senior center in Connecticut. “Remembering how important activities at this center had been for my father and realizing that Del Mar did not have any similar organization, I decided to develop such a group,” she explained. Nancy still plays an active role at Del Mar Community Connection and in the City of Del Mar. She’s an inspiration to Del Mar residents all over and she advises her fellow neighbors that the best way to make a difference in their community is through action. “Be informed, be active, and don’t hesitate to try something new,” she declared. ¢

:::: REAL ESTATE WATCH
The Truth Behind the Numbers by CAY AND CARLY BOHNSACK, Pacific Sotheby’s International Realty
O
ver the last ten years, the housing market has been extremely volatile with thrilling highs and terrifying lows. We are taking an in-depth look and breaking down exactly what is going on in the market today, compared to a year ago and what we can expect moving forward. The numbers are staggering, yet exciting if you are a seller or homeowner in Del Mar and Solana Beach. The number of active listings on the market today is down -22% in Del Mar and -31% in Solana Beach. Due to the lack of inventory, pending home sales have also decreased rapidly at -10% in Del Mar and -60% in Solana Beach. The measurable lack of inventory has spurred buyers to act quickly reducing the average market time in Del Mar down to forty-two days and eightyeight days in Solana Beach, however we are still experiencing homes selling in a matter of days with multiple offers. This has resulted in an average sales price in Del Mar increasing +46% from a year ago to $2,442,452 and in Solana Beach a +31% to $1,715,357. Given the market is changing and adjusting on a daily,
weekly, and monthly basis, we have the track record to prove we are moving in a positive direction. What can we expect this summer? Low inventory will continue to spur the market while mortgage rates are still historically low allowing lenders to make loans affordable. We are in a healthy market where families are moving up into their dream home and baby boomers can afford to downsize. Homeowners are no longer tied to their home and have the freedom and equity to make the right move for their lifestyle and family. Call us today to set up a consultation to discuss how we will help you achieve your goals and objectives. ¢

A Tribute to CCA
AN UNCONVENTIONAL 10TH YEAR ANNIVERSARY GALA photos provided by CANYON CREST ACADEMY
C
anyon Crest Academy (CCA) will hold its tenth year anniversary gala on May 16 at 5:30 p.m. at the Proscenium Theatre on the school’s campus. The event, Across the Universe: A Beatles Tribute, will begin with a pre-party set in the streets of London with Beatles-themed refreshments, followed by a performance by the students from the Envision disciplines, a silent auction, a plaque unveiling ceremony and an after-party held off-campus. This year’s gala is a bit unconventional in the sense that, unlike previous years, its focus and venue are much more personal. This year’s gala involves students and emphasizes the school as the focal point of the evening. Students are in charge of the planning and execution of all aspects of the event, including food, entertainment, and decorations. CCA’s ROP business class is planning and serving a portion of the menu, the visual arts classes are working on masks for the dancers, and other classes are hard at work auditioning for
the performance – Across the Universe: A Tribute to the Beatles. “We are breaking the mold of the traditional gala this year, and holding the event at the school. We are spending money at CCA for CCA and providing valuable educational and real-life experiences for our students throughout the process,” said Joanne Couvrette, Executive Director of the Canyon Crest Academy Foundation. Ticket prices to the gala vary according to preference. A gala guest ticket is $75, a gala and after-party ticket is $100, and a reserved VIP seating and after-party ticket is $125. After-show party only and preshow party only tickets are both $30. You can purchase tickets online at www.ccagala.com. To buy a plaque to commemorate the occasion visit the website and use the ‘sign in’ tab to create an account. CCA waits in anticipation for the upcoming event, and there’s no denying the sense of excitement in the air on the CCA campus. “We are all looking forward to a very successful event at CCA,” related Joanne. ¢
