Household Fiscal Year?
W
Derrick Breaux Publisher
hile many businesses use a calendar year for convenient accounting purposes, I’ve come to realize that the vast majority of people actually run their homes similar to a fiscal year basis. Sure, everyone likes to gear up and prepare for the big symbolic New Year celebration, but for most families, Jan. 1 merely marks the halfway point on the annual journey of household responsibility and schedules. Shouldn’t there be a big prize waiting for each of us when we finish the year? A calendar year ending in December doesn’t seem very exciting. Kids go back to school in January – certainly no prize for most of them. Tax season is looming right after the beginning of the new calendar year. Again, not very exciting for most of us. Although technically a new year, everyone is typically still quite involved with trying to get through their fiscal year. What I mean by this is that the end of the year for most families seems to take place in June. That’s right… June is officially the end of our household fiscal year. June is when kids finish school – in fact, many kids graduate or get promoted to the next grade. It is the month that moms and dads are typically limping through the finish line donating their final volunteer hours in the classrooms (I have to admit that I’ve read a few hilarious postings about this in some of my recent social media binges). Spring sports are finishing up. The gift of warm weather is upon us. Summer must be the end-of-year prize! Although we are spoiled in San Diego and blessed with beautiful weather year round, I still love summer. Summer brings freedom for kids – I’m sure some parents may argue that it can also bring boredom. Summer is a time for family vacations, trips to the beach, outside barbeques, walks with the dog, playing outside until sunset, and creating lifelong memories. For my daughter who recently graduated from high school, summer is a time of transition. It marks the end of a huge chapter in her life and the beginning of the rest of her adult life. The start of her new household fiscal year comes with unlimited promise, excitement, uncertainty, exploration, dedication, and nervousness – all wrapped up into a couple of months. Perhaps we should all rethink the traditional New Year celebration concept. What we should all really be celebrating is a Year “End” party (in June). I see the Year End celebration as a festive event where adults get to congratulate each other for actually making it through the year in one piece. The occasion should include high fives, hugs, toasts, and perhaps, some type of victory dance. I definitely think that we might be on to something here. I hope everyone has a great summer!

R
obert “Sully” Sullivan is a second generation San Diego local who’s been in Del Mar since 2006. In 1998, while CEO of a few investment banking firms, he was asked to guest on a radio program–KCEO–San Diego’s original business talk station. “A week later they asked me if I wanted to do my own morning show a couple days a week,” Sully recalled, “and three months later, Cliff Albert, the most important program director in the news/talk format this side of the Mississippi, called and offered me an opportunity at KSDS. In six months, I went from not being on the radio to being on afternoon drive in the eighth largest market – the luckiest radio career on the planet.” At 11 a.m. on weekdays, Sully hosts a nationally syndicated television/ radio program called “The Big Biz Show.” This show is experienced in sixty million television homes nationally, 175 countries and 150 radio stations nationwide. His on-air partner, Russ T. Nailz, and he have been doing the show almost seventeen years. Weekday afternoons he is the afternoon drive host on NEWSRADIO 600 KOGO from 3 to 7 p.m. The show is caller driven, topical, and pertaining to everything San Diego. Besides being a voice and face of San Diego, Sully is also a wheel. For the past five years, he’s journeyed a 620-mile bike ride from San Francisco to San Diego. He rides to raise funds for the Challenged Athletes Foundation (CAF), an organization that helps people with physical challenges participate and compete in sports the rest of us take for granted. “I’m talking wounded veterans,” he confirmed. “I’m talking motorcycle accident victims. I’m talking about folks less fortunate than you or I and here is the most inspiring part: many of the folks I just described are riding with me! Yeah! 620 miles.” Sully continued, “Single amputees, double amputees, some racing in chairs, some with prosthetic limbs, heroes all. You get the idea.” He’s committed to raise $25,000 this year. Robert “Sully” Sullivan has a list of accomplishments as long as the proverbial arm, but when asked about his greatest achievement, his answer is immediate. “Being the father of my 19 and 21-year-old daughters. I tried to raise them as boys right here in Carmel Valley and Del Mar. Their mom and I did a great job. They came out as two beautiful, unbelievable kids. We are very blessed.” ¢

Caring for Community Readers
ZCODE MAGAZINES HONORED AS SMALL BUSINESS OF THE YEAR
A
ssemblymember Brian Maienschein recently honored us here at ZCode Magazines as the 77th Assembly District’s 2014 Small Business of the Year in recognition of our ongoing commitment to the readers of our community. “ZCode Magazines has found an innovative way to bring people in our community together by showcasing local businesses, events, and residents,” Maienschein said. “I’m proud to recognize ZCode for creating a fun, community-based publication that San Diegans enjoy reading, while helping local small businesses promote themselves.” Launched in 2009, we started with one publication, 92127 Magazine, a reference to the zip code where the magazine was distributed. Since then we have grown to become the publisher of eleven zip code-specific magazines, reaching 185,000 San Diegans. Each magazine highlights unique local businesses, families, students, sports, and community events. ZCode Magazines also provides advice to local businesses on community outreach using social media, email, and custom publishing.
“On behalf of all of us at ZCode Magazines, we are honored to be selected by Assemblymember Maienschein to receive the Small Business of the Year Award,” said Derrick Breaux, Publisher and CEO of ZCode Magazines. “We work hard to serve our readers and the community that we love, and we wouldn’t be successful without them.” A family business, Breaux’s brother, Tyler McElhaney, serves as creative director and COO for our publishing company, located in the Rancho Bernardo area of San Diego. “Maintaining a balance of high quality design and production along with hyper-local stories and features is our biggest goal. Employing local writers, photographers, designers and sales staff reinforces our commitment to the communities of San Diego,” explained McElhaney. Each year, the California Small Business Association asks legislators to nominate a Small Business of the Year from their district that has demonstrated exemplary business ethics and community service. We were presented with a framed certificate from the State Assembly recognizing our outstanding contributions. ¢

“Our mother always brought back stories from her visits to very poor countries. One day we decided that we wanted to help out, so we started volunteering.” Their first volunteer gig occurred five years ago, when both assisted with PCI’s annual Walk4Water 5K event. Mickey explained, “The walk simulates a 5K walk that many women and children have to do to fetch water in the countries where PCI works.” Now Thomas and Mickey work alongside the main events coordinator, performing such tasks as setting up signs, ensuring trash is picked up, directing traffic, and much, much more. Upcoming events that they’ll help with include the annual Day at the Races on Aug. 1, and an annual gala in the fall. The two also work independently to raise money for PCI. Thomas, who has vast entrepreneurial knowledge because of his involvement with the Junior Achievement program, proclaimed, “I love running my business with my brother and the fact that it gives back to people in need. There is so much to do, and I have to say that my time with Junior Achievement has helped me realize what it takes to actually make money.” Mickey added, “Our biggest accomplishment was raising $1,000 for PCI, and going to the office to donate it.” When they’re not lending their services to PCI, the brothers love camping, fishing, sailing, skiing, hiking through Torrey Pines, eating frozen yogurt at Golden Spoon and dining at the En Fuego Cantina & Grill. They also enjoy traveling, and visit Germany every year to see their grandparents. Hoping to recruit others interested in worldly causes, Thomas added, “PCI always needs volunteers to help at the office or at their events, so contact us!” ¢

:::: YOUR NEIGHBOR’S RECIPE
Ingredients Filling 5 cups diced fresh fruit of your choice (apricots, peaches, apples, mangoes, and/or any combination of berries) 1 tablespoon coconut oil 1/2 teaspoon sea salt
Topping 1 1/2 cups raw, organic nuts (almonds, Brazil nuts, cashews, pecans, and/or walnuts) 1 cup gluten-free oats (Bob’s Red Mill suggested) 1 cup cane sugar 3/4 cup softened coconut oil 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon 1/4 teaspoon cloves 1/2 teaspoon sea salt
Directions Filling Preparation 1. 2. 3.
Melt coconut oil in a large skillet over medium-low heat, add diced fruit, and sprinkle sea salt on top. You don’t need to heat the berries, just place them in the baking dish. Mix thoroughly and let simmer for about 3 to 5 minutes, or until the fruit is gently softened and the ingredients are mixed well. Pour the filling into a baking dish and spread out evenly.
Topping Preparation 1.
2. 3. 4.
Place all of the topping ingredients in a food processor and blend until the topping reaches your desired consistency (usually about 15 to 20 seconds for a chunky topping and 30 to 40 seconds for a smoother crumble topping). Scoop the crumble on top of the fruit filling and spread it evenly with a large fork or by hand. Carefully place the cobbler on a cookie sheet, and then place it in an oven on the middle rack without a lid for 25 to 35 minutes, or until golden brown and bubbly on the sides. Remove the cobbler and set it on the racks to cool and settle for at least 20 minutes before digging in. Serve it up alone or with a scoop of your favorite organic ice-cream. Coconut Bliss’ Natural Flavor is Anna’s favorite dairy and gluten free ice-cream. Makes: 10 – 12 3/4 cup servings Total Time: 45 minutes

So when I became anaphylactic allergic to dairy at age 18, I had to learn how to make it myself and enjoyed mixing in fresh peaches and blueberries. Ten years later, my body completely rejected wheat/gluten and the recipe evolved again to be what it is now. When I have cooking classes and dinner parties, it’s always a hit and everyone feels happy and light knowing they’re eating a healthy dessert! About the Chef: I grew up in beautiful Valley Center with my three amazing brothers, Alden, Austin and Paul-Andres. We still manage to share family dinners with my parents who raised us vegetarian. total of $32,150 in scholarship funds was donated to a group of fifty-seven extraordinary seniors at Canyon Crest Academy (CCA) at the recent Canyon Crest Academy Dollars for Scholars Awards Ceremony. According to Beth Broussalian, CCA Dollars for Scholars Board President, “This was the highest number of awards and scholarship funds that our chapter has funded in a single year since the organization started seven years ago.” Beth explained that the 2014 recipients were judged based off of a rubric that evaluated details of the students’ extracurricular activities, leadership experience, honors, awards, and academic achievements. As for the types of scholars who received the awards, Beth stated, “The recipients excelled in academics, athletics, and the arts both at CCA and in the community.” She elaborated, “These talented seniors are planning majors as diverse as neuroscience, film, environmental engineering, computer science, music, industrial design, and theater.” Two of the award recipients, Jackson Backer and Quin Patterson were also recognized as Del Mar-Solana Beach Rotary award scholarship winners as well. Both were presented with $500 scholarships by Kevin Cahill, founding President of the Del MarSolana Beach Rotary Club. The CCA Dollars for Scholars would like to extend a thank you to all of the donors who made this year’s awards ceremony possible. Scholarship funding came from CCA families and alumni,
the community, and the generous individual donors of the Dollars for Scholars fundraising programs of CCA Directory, graduation lei sales, and Driver’s Ed. :::: ASK THE PHARMACIST
HORMONE REPLACEMENT THERAPY: SHEDDING NEW LIGHT ON AN OLD MYTH Are you a female between the ages of thirty to fifty years of age, wondering why you’re experiencing… • Migraines • Insomnia
• Mood Swings • Hot Flashes
• Weight Gain • Acne
• Fatigue • Decreased Sex Drive
Are you pre/post-menopausal and suffer symptoms because you fear estrogen or other hormone replacement therapies (HRTs) may lead to breast cancer? Or have you gone through menopause over ten years ago and think there is no need or benefit in HRTs? Do you think, or have you been told that these symptoms are just an expected sign of aging? How many of you see an eye doctor and ask to have the vision of a 70-year-old, when understandably we’d all like to have the vision of a 30-year-old? Why should treating hormone deficiencies be any different? Bio-identical hormone therapy may reduce cardiovascular disease, colon cancer, dementia, osteoporosis, hot flashes and many other conditions previously thought to be normal signs of aging. Did you know many of the concerns associated with HRTs have been linked to synthetic hormones Premarin and Provera (medroxyprogesterone) – NOT bio-identical hormones? Results of a French twelve-year study of 80,000 women showed NO increased cancer risk in women using bio-identical estrogen and progesterone therapies when compared to women using no hormones. Women using bio-identical HRT may enjoy relief from many of the pre/post-menopausal symptoms, both minor and major, once dosing of each hormone is in proper balance. Starting as early as your late 20’s and through to your late 40’s, females can start to significantly reduce the production of progesterone compared to estrogen, leading to what is known as “Estrogen Dominance.” Symptoms can include: • Irregular Menses • Insomnia • Mood Swings • Hot Flashes • Weight Gain of Hips and Thighs
• Breast Tenderness • Acne • Migraines
We urge those who are seeking information or just curious about what HRTs can do for them to call or come into Carmel Valley Pharmacy and speak with our staff. Many retail pharmacies don’t compound, so many patients are often times unaware of how compounded medication like HRTs can improve quality of life. For many, becoming educated can be the first step in a positive, life-improving direction. As society moves forward in scientific achievements it is time to throw out old ways of thinking and embrace new medical approaches that may allow us to live our lives to the fullest.

What is surprising is how they met. As part of The Mockingbirds, a local band, James played in a college bar weekly. He reminisced, “I asked a bouncer to pick up Keri and put her on stage. For
Robert A. Sunstein, DDS, dentistry and orthodontics have been a passion since he was a child. “When I was young, I had a swimming accident and almost knocked out my front teeth. After moving them back into place myself, my dentist said that I was a natural. Later on, after visiting with my best friend’s dad who is an orthodontist, I decided that I wanted to focus on orthodontics,” revealed Dr. Sunstein. Knowing that pursuing his dream would take hard work and dedication, Dr. Sunstein earned his Bachelor of Science degree from San Diego State University, his DDS from UCLA and two subsequent post-doctoral degrees in esthetic dentistry and advanced education in general dentistry. After a residency in orthodontics at Columbia University in New York, Dr. Sunstein returned to Southern California. He opened his practice in 1998 and has been helping San Diegans smile ever since.

Most of my staff has been in dentistry and orthodontics all of their professional lives. And over the course of my career I have fixed every type of bite, from basic crowding to full jaw surgery. I really don’t think there’s a type of bite that I have not fixed.” ~Dr. Sunstein
Dr. Sunstein and his staff have a great deal of experience in the field of orthodontics and are committed to using that experience to provide the best service possible to their patients. Julie, Dr. Sunstein’s manager, is an orthodontic registered dental assistant and has been with him since he started his practice. “Most of my staff has been in dentistry and orthodontics all of their professional lives. And over the course of my career I have fixed every type of bite, from basic crowding to full jaw surgery. I really don’t think there’s a type of bite that I have not fixed,” stated Dr. Sunstein. In addition, he regularly pursues continuing education, attending a monthly study club and numerous orthodontic conferences throughout the country.
The practice offers state-of-the-art digital radiography and high quality orthodontic products including traditional and clear braces and Invisalign. Dr. Sunstein sees patients of all ages from children and teens to adults who want to improve their smiles. Regardless of the age of the patient, Dr. Sunstein and his staff enjoy celebrating the creation of a beautiful smile. “We have a party-like atmosphere when a patient gets his or her braces off, and each patient receives a gift from me and the staff,” said Dr. Sunstein. “It feels good to make hundreds of happy new smiles every year.” ¢

HISTORY BEHIND THE BOYS & GIRLS CLUBS OF SAN DIEGUITO In 1966, Doug Hall, then executive director of the Carlsbad Boys Club, met with Dr. Charles Clark from Encinitas. Dr. Clark was representing the Encinitas Optimist Club and was interested in starting a Boys Club in the San Dieguito communities. The Encinitas Optimist and the San Dieguito Kiwanis service clubs had joined together in an effort to establish a youth program for the seven communities in the San Dieguito area: Encinitas, Leucadia, Olivenhain, Cardiff, Solana Beach, Del Mar, and Rancho Santa Fe. In February 1967, Dr. Clark, President of the Board, asked Doug Hall, who had been acting as a consultant and executive director (through an arrangement with the Carlsbad Club), to be the permanent executive director of the new San Dieguito Boys Club. After much deliberation and discussion with his family, Doug accepted the position. He would hold this position for the next twenty-five years, and be instrumental in the success of the Club for over forty-five years. Today, the Boys & Girls Clubs of San Dieguito is one of the most successful Clubs in the country, serving more than 20,000 youth in the San Dieguito community. We still have an obligation to those generous and benevolent leaders of the past and to the youth of the future to assure our mission continues to thrive and to provide our youth with a successful approach to the future.

BARBARA HARPER BRANCH, SOLANA BEACH AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAMS (ASP) The Barbara Harper Branch serves the Solana Beach community and works closely with Earl Warren Jr. High School, Skyline Elementary and Solana Vista Elementary and serves an average of fifty children each day. It is the goal of the Harper Branch staff to enable all youth to participate in the numerous activities offered for their benefit and development. Not only do the children build friendships, memories, and have fun, the great staff also builds strong, supportive connections with the children. We provide an enriching after school program that provides diverse activities that meet the interests of all young people. Core programs encourage activities with adults, peers, and family members that enable kids to enhance self-esteem and fulfill their potential. Some specialized programs in the ASP include: Power Hour (an academic support program designed to help members develop academic, behavioral, and social skills through homework completion, high-yield learning activities, and tutoring), Reading Program (every day the children are encouraged to read silently for at least twenty minutes, meet goals and get rewarded for reading goals met), and Minute to Win It Challenge (a challenge given to youth while under pressure). In addition, free time, games, arts and crafts, music, dancing, and physical activities are all a part of our after school programs.
CENTER FOR A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE Kids have a blast at the Center for a Healthy Lifestyle (the sunny yellow cottage behind the Harper Branch). Cooking and gardening are brought to life
with fun, educational, delicious, healthy, and silly classes. Explore our class listings for upcoming camps, after school classes, field trips, special events, and birthday party opportunities. Chef Amanda Mascia, Emmy Award winner for her on camera talent for the show The Good Food Factory, makes cooking and healthy eating fun for children! Come see what the buzz is about!
PARDEE AQUATICS CENTER The Doug & Marianne Pardee Aquatics Center, located at our Harper Branch in Solana Beach, features two pools, spacious locker rooms, indoor and poolside showers, a fitness center, a snack bar, and other aquatic amenities for the competitive or recreational swimmer. The Pardee Aquatics Center is home to the nationally recognized Rancho San Dieguito Swim Team and Shores Youth Water Polo. Youth Swim Lessons are offered year-round.
ATHLETICS/MIDDLE SCHOOL SPORTS The Boys & Girls Clubs of San Dieguito sponsors ten sports through the Big Ei8ht Middle School Sports Conference: girls volleyball, cross country, flag football, boys basketball, girls field hockey, wrestling, track and field, golf, girls basketball, and soccer. Teams compete against other middle schools throughout San Diego County. In addition, our Athletics Department offers a wide variety of sports leagues, sports camps, and athletic activities for youth of all ages including: Wrestling, Snuffy Basketball, Fastbreak Hoops, After School Teen Physical Fitness Program, Carmel Valley Wrestling Club, the B&G Basketball Clinic, Carmel Valley Running Club, and Manchester Surf Futsal Indoor Soccer.
LA COLONIA BRANCH & CASITA DE GLORIA TEEN CENTER, SOLANA BEACH The La Colonia Branch and Casita de Gloria at La Colonia Park serve the community of Eden Gardens in Solana Beach. Sixty-three elementary school kids and forty-three teens attend the after school program each day. This branch provides a safe and supervised haven after school and during the summer months. Great staff help build positive futures through mentoring and academic support, fitness and recreational activities, and creating healthy lifestyles. La Colonia is truly a big family putting smiles on the faces of all our children who need us most!
TEEN MENTORING PROGRAM This mentoring program focuses on La Colonia teens every day after school, and provides them with peer based social, educational, and athletic activities. The daily interaction in a positive setting validates program participants’ self worth, accomplishments, and value to the community. With carefully selected mentors as positive role models and engaging extra-curricular activities, teens develop the selfesteem and character essential to changing the community dynamic.
COLLEGE NIGHTS La Colonia teens are able to engage in “college nights” where guest speakers inform teens about attending college and the importance of their college decisions. Mentors also help with financial aid applications, prepping for SAT’s, and scholarship applications. In addition,
teens make several trips to local Southern California colleges throughout the year to get familiarized with college campuses. Many of these high school students will be first generation high school graduates and college students.
GARDENING AT LA COLONIA Teens and kids at the La Colonia Branch worked extremely hard to build a garden at the branch called the “El Jardin de los Ninos.” Andi Macleod, chief volunteer for the garden, teaches youth about growing organic fruits and vegetables while using ingredients from the garden to create healthy recipes. Andi has been instrumental in teaching healthy lifestyles to the teens and youth of the La Colonia community.
MENTORING PROGRAM The Boys & Girls Clubs of San Dieguito and the team at Crush Italian Restaurant in Solana Beach have partnered together to create a mentoring program for teens which uses shadowing and one-on-one mentoring techniques to learn skills in the restaurant industry. Five teens from the La Colonia Branch have been selected to participate in this program. Every Wednesday, starting April 2 and running through June 4, (a total of ten weeks) the teens will shadow every position in the restaurant in order to gain real world experience.

WHAT KIND OF FEES ARE INVOLVED WITH HAVING BOYS AND GIRLS ATTEND PROGRAMS AT THE CLUBS? DO YOU OFFER ANY SCHOLARSHIPS OR FINANCIAL AID TO FAMILIES IN NEED? Fees vary between branches and departments, but we offer financial aid/ scholarships at all our branches and programs. The La Colonia Branch is one of our branches that is 100% scholarships and serves 110 kids and teens every day. No child is excluded from attending the Club since financial assistance is available.

Our top five needs are: vans for transportation (new or used), leather couches (new or gently used), area rugs (new), computers (new), and sports equipment.
WHAT SETS THE BOYS & GIRLS CLUBS OF SAN DIEGUITO APART FROM OTHER CLUBS WORLDWIDE? We are unique because of the additional specialized programs we offer for our youth: Center for a Healthy Lifestyle; Youth Arts Academy, Aquatics, Middle School Sports, Athletics, and a Montessori School.
WHAT ARE SOME OF THE CLUBS’ MOST POPULAR FUNDRAISING EVENTS? Our biggest and most exciting event is our African Safari Youth-of-the-Year Gala which will be held on Friday, Aug. 8 at the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club Infield Pavilion. This event is a casual, but a fun evening of night horse racing, dinner/ drinks, silent and live auctions, and dancing with the Wayne Foster Band. But, most importantly, we honor our overall Youth-of-the-Year for 2014 chosen from six finalists throughout our seven branches here at the Club. In addition, Terry Lingenfelder, our 2014 Volunteer of the Year will be honored for his commitment and dedication over forty years to this organization.
You can go to our website at www.bgcsandieguito.org and click on GIVE. You can also call the development department at 858-793-7345 and we can customize an event sponsorship or corporate partnership to best fit your business needs.
Our other large fundraiser that we have is our unique Chip-in-for-Kids Golf Tournament which is a unique golf experience that enables golfers to play on the North Course of Torrey Pines Golf Club while the pros are playing their final round on the South Course during the Farmers Insurance Open PGA tournament.
DO YOU HAVE ANY OPPORTUNITIES FOR COMMUNITY MEMBERS TO VOLUNTEER THEIR TIME? WHAT IS CURRENTLY AVAILABLE?
The day includes a unique ball format for eighteen holes, VIP convenient parking across the street from the North Course, premium gift bag valued at $250, catered breakfast and made-to-order BBQ lunch with hosted beverages, PGA passes, and entrance into a private section of the Tilted Kilt Tartan Terrace to watch the finals of the Open on the South Course. For more information on all fundraising events, please visit our website and click on events.
Yes! Volunteers are needed to serve as mentors, tutors, coaches, art and computer teachers and more – you tell us your interests and we’ll match you with a Boys & Girls Club near you. Just one or two hours each week can make a real difference in a young person’s life. As a volunteer, it can make a real difference in your life, too. Volunteers at Boys & Girls Clubs of San Dieguito get the training and support they need to be a successful part of our clubs and the lives of our members. Our children’s safety at the Clubs is our number one priority; therefore everyone is required to have a background check before being approved to volunteer.
HOW DOES ONE GO ABOUT PROVIDING ITEMS THAT THE CLUBS ARE IN NEED OF? WHAT ARE THE TOP FIVE ITEMS THAT YOU’RE IN NEED OF MOST? If a donor is interested in providing an item that the Club needs you can go to our website and under the GIVE tab there is an area for “wish list items”. You can click on that tab and there is a list of needed items by branch and department. You can either purchase the item yourself and deliver to the Club (we also pick-up) or you can make a donation and we will purchase the item.
ARE THERE ANY EXCITING NEW PROJECTS, DEVELOPMENTS, OR PROGRAMS COMING TO THE CLUBS? Yes! We are currently expanding our Center for a Healthy Lifestyle and are in the process of building a half acre organic garden and commercial like kitchen at our Griset Branch in Encinitas. The garden and kitchen will serve as a staple in the community for garden to table education, cooking classes for kids, nutrition education and vocational skill training. The kitchen was completed at the end of June and the garden will be soon to follow.
IF YOU COULD GRANT THE CLUBS ONE WISH, WHAT WOULD IT BE? To expand our programs, services and branches to the areas not being served in our surrounding communities, especially to youth that need us most.

or Kevin Burns and Steve Maugeri, BMWs and Mercedes are not simply vehicles – they are a life-long passion. “Over the years, I have owned many BMWs and Mercedes and have gained a deep insight into these two brands,” explained Burns, Owner of Kevin The Car Guy. Steve Maugeri, Owner of Steve’s Beemer & Benz also has extensive experience with these two car manufacturers. “My interest in German vehicles began at an early age. I have worked for both Mercedes-Benz and BMW, and in 1986, I started my own independent German car facility,” revealed Maugeri. Together these two car experts have created a partnership that assists BMW and Mercedes owners buy, sell and maintain their vehicles.
Kevin The Car Guy When Burns recently decided to turn his hobby of buying and selling German automobiles into a business, he turned to his longtime personal mechanic to help him inspect and repair the cars in his inventory. “Steve’s was the only place I ever considered for my maintenance partnership. My cars are inspected and repaired by his team of factory certified technicians,” stated Burns. In addition, Burns takes great pride in only purchasing the highest quality pre-owned vehicles. His business is not driven by volume, allowing him to pick and choose the best cars from private owners before they are used for dealer trade-ins. Burns encourages those who are considering selling their BMW or Mercedes to contact him to receive the best offer possible on their vehicle. “Even if you already have a trade-in quote, I can almost always provide a higher offer,” related Burns.
Steve’s Beemer & Benz Since he opened his doors twenty-eight years ago, Maugeri and his technicians have served BMW and Mercedes owners throughout San Diego County. The overall mission at Steve’s Beemer & Benz is to offer customers personalized quality service at a fair price. “Steve’s attention to service and his low cost compared to dealerships have kept his customers coming back throughout the years,” said Burns.

Rotarians Serving in San Diego
THE DEL MAR-SOLANA BEACH ROTARY CLUB’S CONTRIBUTION TO ROTARIANS AT WORK DAY
As
part of Rotarians at Work Day (RAW), a worldwide community service day held annually each year, fourteen Rotarians and friend of the Del Mar-Solana Beach Rotary Club set off to revamp the look of the “Take Wing” apartment complex in Point Loma. Together the hard workers painted, weeded, built garden boxes, and planted flowers, ground cover, and vegetables to add new life to the transitional housing wing. Take Wing offers transitional housing and support to foster children ages 18 to 24 who have either “aged out” of foster care, are homeless, or are at-risk of becoming homeless. The Rotary Club looks forward to RAW day each year. As Charles Foster, Public Relations Committee Chair of the Del MarSolana Beach Rotary Club stated, “The Rotary Club enjoys doing hands-on work to make a difference in peoples’ lives.” He continued, “Besides getting to see, up close and personal, the completion of something useful for those in need, it’s really awesome knowing that more than 2,000 Rotarians in San Diego are doing something for the good of our communities, all on the same day.” Charles explained that each Rotary Club picks its own RAW project, and collaboration is allowed as well. As Charles elaborated, “Last year the Del MarSolana Beach Sunrise Rotary Club, joined with the Del Mar Rotary Club for a project to improve the coast to crest trail alongside the San Dieguito Lagoon.”
After leaving the apartment complex, Charles thought about how gracious the people were. “Thank you for making our home look so much nicer,” said the mothers. And, in that moment, RAW became more than a day of work for those Rotarians. It became a fond memory they will recall often and look forward to remembering next year when Rotarians all over the world will participate in another work day. ¢

annah Nancarrow’s father, Loran Nancarrow was someone whom she had always admired. She credits her father – who was a well-known and beloved San Diego TV journalist – for her career choice. “Choosing to study journalism in college was a natural, easy choice for me and I was fortunate enough to have the best mentor in the business as my dad,” shared Hannah. After working for some time at Fox 5 San Diego, Hannah left the TV industry to pursue another passion of hers: writing – more specifically, blogging. “I’d heard the saying ‘if you do what you love, you never work a day in your life,’ so I started Hannah Jane Media,” said Hannah of her consulting business, which helps small businesses and prospective business owners build and write blogs. “Although I started the company on a whim, blogging has turned out to be one of the most impactful skills of my life thus far,” she stated. On Jan. 28, 2013, Hannah’s life was turned upside-down when her father was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer and given only a short while to live. But in her darkest moment, Hannah found light; and together with her father did what she did best: she started blogging. “On that day, in his ICU room, The Nancarrow Project blog was born,” recalled Hannah. “We started the blog as a way of sharing our story and communicating with friends and family – what it became was so much more significant and rewarding than we could’ve ever dreamed.” Through those eleven months of blogging, father and daughter were able to find a connection with people who shared similar stories, providing them both with an overwhelming feeling of support. What’s more is that the life lessons Hannah took away from her father in his final months of his life have not only strengthened her initiative to explore her own passions, but have fueled her desire to help others. “In the final blog my dad posted, he wrote: ‘One of the lessons I’ve learned in life is that happiness lies in discovering your passions and exploring them fiercely…Wherever they are, whatever they may be, seek out your passions and cultivate them.’ I very much echo that sentiment,” offered Hannah. In August, she plans to climb Mt. Whitney and in October is rappelling down the Manchester Grand Hyatt as part of a fundraiser event for Accelerate Brain Cancer Cure. “Most terrifying of all, I’m a contestant for Miss California USA 2015 in January!” she added. “When my dad was diagnosed with brain cancer, I realized that I wanted to help others going through similar circumstances,” said Hannah. “Since then, my family has partnered with Scripps Health to fundraise for ‘The Loren Nancarrow Healing Garden’ at the Scripps Radiation Therapy Center at Torrey Pines.” Today, she and her family have raised over $250,000 for the Scripps cancer patients. Her additional volunteer work with The San Diego Brain Tumor Foundation, The American Cancer Society and Accelerate Brain Cancer Cure, has helped to raise more than $15,000 for cancer patients and their families. “I’m always open and eager to get involved with organizations that touch me!” exclaimed Hannah. For all of her efforts, Hannah has been awarded “Top Fundraiser” for The San Diego Brain Tumor Foundation’s Take A Step event. “Having lost my grandpa to complications from a brain tumor and both my grandma and dad to brain cancer, it was the most meaningful award imaginable,” she shared. Most recently, Hannah was the keynote speaker at a San Diego Women’s Week event. “It was an incredible night that could only have been made better by my dad being there,” noted Hannah, “but I know he was watching.” ¢

ag West, a Del Mar pet care company that differentiates itself from competitors by using a smart phone app and GPS tracking for dog walking, is now in its second year of business. The GPS tracking app allows clients to see in real time when and where their dogs are being walked, requiring full accountability on the part of the dog walker, and providing 100% peace of mind for the owner. Wag West’s pet care professionals are required to pass a police background check, be pet first aid certified, and be service oriented and reliable. “I hire staff who are able to bring something else to the table,” said Owner, Adam Zucker, “whether that may be a higher level of education, a dog training background, or pet medical experience.” Rachael Clark, a key professional at Wag West, not only holds a master’s degree from the University of Hawaii, but is also a certified dog trainer. “Clients

Youths Receive Prestigious Scholarship TPHS STUDENTS AWARDED GATES MILLENNIUM SCHOLARSHIP AWARD
T
orrey Pines High School students Daisy Aguilar and Joshua Kim just received word that they are two of this year’s recipients of the Gates Millennium Scholarship Award. The Gates Millennium Scholars Program, which “selects 1,000 talented students each year to receive a good-through-graduation scholarship to use at any college or university of their choice,” is funded by a grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. In order to apply for the scholarship, students must be of “African American, American Indian/Alaska Native, Asian Pacific Islander American or Hispanic American descent with high academic and leadership promise who have significant financial need.” Considering that over 52,000 applicants applied this year, and only 1,000 high school seniors received the scholarship, that’s quite an accomplishment for these hard working seniors! The scholarship will cover both students’ college funding in any discipline area of study they choose to pursue. Additionally, if the students decide to pursue higher education, they may request funding for a graduate degree program in one of the following areas: science, public health, library science, engineering, education, mathematics, or computer science. The scholarship pays for any study abroad expenses as well. “My life has changed dramatically in the past three weeks since I have finally committed to my top school, University of San Diego, and I am ecstatic to be a Torero”, said Daisy Aguilar. She also expressed her gratitude for her family away from home, the Boys & Girls Club of San
Dieguito. “There’s nothing better than sharing the joy of this blessing than with the organization that supported me throughout my life,” she shared. Daisy will be the first person in her family to attend college and plans to double major in business and sociology and obtain her minor in nonprofit management. Joshua will be attending University of California Los Angeles as a dance and pre-med double major. ¢

Garden S TRANSFORM your
BED
by TORI MORRISON
ummer emerges each year with a bright and sunny entrance. Here in San Diego we wait in anticipation for that final school bell, or for the skies to open up for a relaxing day at the beach. Once beach weather settles in it’s pretty difficult to stay motivated, however why not mix it up this summer with a do-it-yourself-project in your garden? There’s plenty of crafty ideas out there for raised vegetable boxes, and with their versatility it’s easy to turn a garden bed into a piece of artwork. You can even put your summer seashell collecting to good use and style the beds with beach-sytle decor. Here are some ideas to get you started.
CORRUGATED METAL BED
STONE-LINED BED
For a cool, industrial look, cut eight panels of corrugated metal to size and lay them out so that they cross over each other by two inches. Begin at one end of the panels and start attaching them panel to panel by drilling three evenly spaced holes down each seam so that it goes through both panels. Using a rivet gun, place a rivet in each of the holes. Next, rivet the final seam. Place support rods on the outside of the beds and pound them into the ground until they are at an even level with the top of the bed. To make a bottom, cut pieces of hardware cloth to fit inside the bed. Next, place them in the bed so they overlap and curve up the sides.
Create a raised bed in a frame that sits on the surface of the soil. Use stones, rocks, bricks, or shells as accent pieces. In this case ensure that the soil is properly mounded as it forms part of the landscape of the bed. When you dig, clear the soil and then use a sharp, square-bladed spade to break up it up. Next, change to a round-pointed shovel for evening out the surface.

WATER TROUGH For those who aren’t so handy with tools, there’s always the option of purchasing a galvanized water trough and drilling holes at the bottom for drainage. Place rocks in between the holes and the soil to create some room and an additional layer to catch water.

THE DEL MAR FOUNDATION HOSTS INSPIRATIONAL TALKS FOR ITS COMMUNITY
In
keeping with its Del Mar Foundation (DMF) Talks’ mission, “Inform, Inspire, Include,” the DMF will once again host their unique version of TED Talks to continue to educate and connect with their community. What began as a casual community gathering with local speakers in 2012, has now grown into a regular TED Talks-like series, DMF Talks, with four to six annual presentations consisting of a variety of topics in the medical, scientific and arts fields. Karen Wilson, Executive Director of the DMF, elaborated, “As a community foundation, one of our goals is to sponsor diverse cultural programs and events for the small, but very vibrant, community of Del Mar. DMF Talks helps us bring the community together to enjoy each other’s company over light refreshments and enriches them with informative, entertaining and inspirational talks.” Coming up in the fall, DMF Talks will focus on enchanting travel stories, informative talks regarding the environment and celebrated artwork. According to Karen, “Helen Thayer, a National Geographic designated master explorer and inspirational speaker, will share stories of her wondrous travels and adventures in some of the most remote regions of the world, Dr. Daniel R. Cayan, Research Meteorologist at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, will speak on ‘Water Worries,’ and Mary Beebe, Executive Director of the Stuart Collection, will entertain with a ‘behind the scenes’ look at the collection of commissioned works by internationally renowned artists.” Karen expressed her gratitude for the speakers. “These events are
free,” she explained. “We are so lucky that our speakers are very generous with us in donating their time and topics.” Thanks to the speakers and DMF, Del Mar will be able to spread more ideas and share grand TED Talks with its own smaller, more local community. Sponsorships are available for businesses and individuals interested in promotional opportunities for DMF Talks. For more information call Karen Wilson at 858-635-1363. Are You Ready to Buy Your First Home? by Richard H. Fogg, CFP®
B
uying your first home is one of the biggest investment decisions you’ll ever make. So how do you know if it’s the right time to venture into home ownership? You can start by answering these seven questions.
1. HOW LONG WILL YOU BE IN THE AREA? Because of the transaction costs that come with buying and selling a home, it typically takes three to five years to break even. If you sell any sooner, you could end up losing money – even in a rising market. If you do make a profit, you’ll have to pay capital gains taxes if you’ve owned the house less than two years. Assess whether your circumstances will enable you to stay put long enough to make purchasing a home worthwhile.
2. HOW MUCH CAN YOU AFFORD TO PAY? As a rule of thumb, your mortgage payment shouldn’t be more than twenty-five percent of your gross income and your total monthly debt shouldn’t exceed thirty-three percent of your gross income. Keep in mind that your principal and interest aren’t the only costs associated with home ownership. You’ll also incur additional expenses, such as: • Utilities: water, gas, electric, sewer, garbage, and association fees (if applicable) • Homeowner’s insurance • Property taxes • Maintenance costs: interior and exterior repairs, and equipment • City assessments Because these charges can add hundreds of dollars to your monthly expenses, make sure to consider your total costs to avoid an uncomfortably tight financial situation or overextending yourself.
3. WHAT’S THE HOUSING MARKET LIKE IN YOUR AREA?
6. ARE YOUR FINANCIAL DOCUMENTS IN ORDER?
The real estate market differs by city, state and region. Compare the costs of renting and buying to determine which makes the most sense in your situation. Depending on where you live, one option may be more favorable than the other.
When you apply for a mortgage you’ll need to provide several documents such as:
4. CAN YOU COVER THE DOWN PAYMENT? Most traditional mortgage brokers require that you have at least a twenty percent down payment to avoid Private Mortgage Insurance (PMI). If you don’t have enough, PMI will typically cost between 0.5 to one percent of your entire loan amount every year. For example, if you purchase a $175,000 home at a one percent insurance rate, it adds just over $145 a month to your expenses. Keep this in mind when calculating what you can afford.
5. WHAT’S YOUR CREDIT SCORE? If you’re not sure, you can order a free credit report from a reputable credit agency such as Equifax, Experian or TransUnion once every twelve months. Your credit score is important because when a bank is deciding to loan you money, they want to know that they can trust you to pay them back. If your credit score is good, you can breathe easy. If it’s not, take action as quickly as possible to improve it. If there are any errors on your report, make sure to get them corrected so they don’t negatively impact your ability to qualify for a loan.
• W-2 or 1099 income statements from the past two years • Current year profit-and-loss statement (if you’re self-employed) • Federal tax returns for the past two years • Bank and investment account statements for up to the past three months • Recent pay stubs and proof of other income Since it can take time to pull all of this information together, start sooner rather than later. Also, always provide every page of a document, because lenders will want to see every page even if it’s blank.
7. DO YOU HAVE AN EMERGENCY SAVINGS FUND? Most financial professionals recommend saving enough to cover three to six months of your living expenses in case an unexpected event such as a job loss, illness or injury prevents you from earning an income. An emergency fund can also help you cover unexpected expenses, such as a broken appliance or a plumbing emergency. For help assessing your financial situation to determine if purchasing a home is a good choice for you consult your financial advisor. Your advisor can help ensure that your decision is in line with your short and long-term goals and budget. ¢

CURIOSITY Point Loma's Beautiful Landmarks and Nature by JESSICA WOODS | photos by Tyler McElhaney
W
e're deep into summer: the sun is bright, the sand is soft, and the ocean is so inviting. For what remains of your summer break, take a day to explore Point Loma, offering historical landmarks, tide pools, awe-inspiring cliffs and hiking trails.
The Old Point Loma Lighthouse takes you back in time to when sailing ships relied on these beacons to guide them through safe waters. Built in 1854, its light could be seen for twenty-five miles. However, the builders didn’t take into account the signature low fog that would obscure the light, and so in 1891, the lighthouse was closed and a new Point Loma lighthouse was constructed at a lower elevation. The old lighthouse has now been converted into a museum, where you can explore what life was like there and see the old lamp whose large beam once permeated the peninsula. Below the lighthouses are a series of silent sentinels collectively known as Fort Rosecrans. The Point Loma peninsula shapes a natural barrier at the entrance of San Diego Bay, and in 1899 the United States Department of War built a series of gun batteries into the cliffs as a strategic harbor defense. While you can’t

enter the batteries themselves today, you can walk alongside these massive strongholds. Whale-watching is popular here, but head to the tide pools to see the tinier creatures that make homes on our shores. Sea stars, mussels, crabs, and other gastropods come and go with the tides. While fun to look at, rangers warn not to touch the animals, as many of them are sensitive and can be harmed or killed from being handled by humans. The tide pools are parallel to the Coastal Tidepool Trail, and more hiking can be explored on the two-mile Bayside Trail. For history hounds, the Cabrillo National Monument offers a closer look at the first explorer to land on the United States’ western shores, Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo. With a large statue to commemorate his exploration, the park also features annual reenactments of his landing. ¢

ith front row sunset views, live music by Semisi & FulaBula, delicious refreshments from some of Del Mar’s most highly regarded restaurants, and wine and beer selections from some of California’s best wineries and breweries, attendees of this year’s Del Mar Summer Solstice at Powerhouse Park celebrated the arrival of summer in style. Participating restaurants included Bull Taco, Del Mar Rendezvous, Il Fornaio, Pacifica Del Mar, Prepkitchen Del Mar, and Sea and Smoke. Award-Winning Student Newspaper TPHS NEWSPAPER THE FALCONER WINS BEST OF SHOW photo provided by The Falconer
For
the students who work on the TPHS student newspaper, The Falconer, journalism is driven by passion. The Falconer not only provides these budding journalists with an avenue to practice and acquire new writing skills, it is an extension of them, “The Falconerds,” as editor-in-chief of The Falconer, Cory Lomberg joked. The students’ hard work recently paid off, as the newspaper was awarded the ‘Best of Show’ award in the Newspaper Broadcasting 17 Pages or More category at the 2014 National Scholastic Press Association and Journalism Education Association Spring National High School Journalism Convention at the Hilton San Diego Bayfront. Elated Cory explained how despite a previous pitfall at the last convention, the staff maintained loyal to their style and craft. She noted, “At the last convention we all thought the judges did not really like our style of writing and design, and we were okay with this. We still wanted to continue in the direction we were going and simply improve the things we had been doing.” The staff’s devotion to their vision clearly benefited them. Cory enthused, “Based on the fact that we won ‘Best in Show,’ I guess sticking with our original ideas and improving our personal style really impressed the judges!” On top of that, Cory expressed how hard the staff worked to create solid, well-researched articles. “. . . we really do put our hearts into releasing a reliable, respected paper every month,” she stated. The Falconer is released monthly, nine times a year and boasts six
sections: news, opinion, feature, focus, entertainment and sports, with a satirical backpage which focuses on popular trends, stories and other relevant issues. The last issue will be released this June, with a new editorial staff stepping up to the plate once the class of 2014 graduates. Cory expressed her hopes for the future Falconerds. “I’m hoping they continue to improve the paper, as well as our website, www.tphsfalconer.com,” she said. She added, “It really will be business as usual for the remaining Falconerds.” ¢

How Fast Are Homes Really Selling? What Does This Mean For 2014? We Know! by GLENN HOLTZ & TANYA GABRIELLA
H
ow fast are homes really selling? C.A.R. 2013 Home Seller Survey reported in 2013, half of all homes were on the market for six weeks or less. This is the shortest time homes have sat on the market since 2005. C.A.R. also showed that in 2013 the average weeks on the market for a listing was eight and a half weeks compared to the average listing sitting on the market for twenty-six weeks in 2012. What does this mean for 2014? According to Fannie Mae’s April 2014 National Housing Survey, Americans outlook towards the housing market continued to improve in April, foreshadowing an increase in the housing activity in the coming months. Of the respondents who believe now is a good time to sell a home increased for the third consecutive month to an all-time high. “These results are in line with our expectations for increased housing activity and gradual strengthening of the housing market going into the spring and summer selling season,” said Doug Duncan, Senior Vice President and Chief Economist at Fannie Mae.

he annual “Heard It Through The Grapevine” Wine and Food Taste, orchestrated by the ladies of the Del Mar Auxiliary of Rady Children’s Hospital, recently celebrated its 53rd anniversary at the Santaluz Golf Club. Highlights of the evening featured unlimited tastings, including beer and wine tastings, music, and prizes from silent and live auctions. Approximately 300 people raised $100,000 in net funds, which will go to the Chadwick Center for Children and Families at Rady Children’s Hospital, a world leader in the treatment and prevention of child abuse. Majority of the funding will go toward a Fellowship in Academic Medicine which will allow the Center to assist more children and families in need. ¢
