Creating Lasting Memories

P U B L I S HE R

Derrick Breaux

M

y wife and I have been blessed with extended families that are very involved in our lives. Being a transplant from Texas (where most of my family still lives), I can appreciate that my wife is a rare third generation San Diegan. She is lucky to have most of her family close by. While we try to spend as much time as possible with both sides of the family, sometimes it gets a little difficult to get everyone together at the same time due to busy schedules and locations. Spending time with the family creates lasting memories. Six years ago, shortly after my grandmother passed away, my grandfather decided to start a tradition of an annual family reunion trip. So each summer, my wife and I take our kids to a lake house outside of Austin, TX for the annual Breaux Family Reunion. For a week, we get to visit and catch up with multiple generations of Breauxs. Our kids hang with their cousins, and the older generation can reminisce about the good ol’ days. It’s been an awesome family tradition that my late grandfather started and left to the family for years to come. My aunt, uncles, and dad are carrying on the annual tradition. And continuing with the creating memories theme, this year my wife’s family surprised everyone with a family trip (thank you T & D). We were able to spend a week with my wife’s parents and her brother and sister’s families. As we cruised through the blue Caribbean waters and various ports of call, we all had a blast visiting and spending time together. The entire experience – the six months leading up to the vacation and the vacation itself – was amazing. Our kids and their cousins ruled the ship (or at least they thought), and all of us adults acted like kids again – even my wife’s parents! There was no shortage of laughs and memorable moments, nor is there a shortage of great photos. I guarantee that we will all be talking about this for years to come. Since these vacations have had such a positive impact on us, I wanted to take a moment to make sure that our families know how much we appreciate spending time with them (yes, some of them actually read this magazine!). Thank you to my late grandparents. Thank you to my dad. Thank you to my aunts and uncles for continuing the traditions, and thank you to my in-laws for putting together a fantastic trip. We love you guys! And thank YOU for being a reader of Del Sol Magazine. Please don’t be a stranger. A fun & effective way to make the most out of summer... Use this summer to turn your child into a confident, motivated, and independent learner. Improving your child's school experience for next year At TLC, we always say, “No child wakes up to have a bad day” – And that’s because there is always an underlying reason why a child is struggling in school, or having a hard time learning. It’s not your fault, it’s not the school’s fault, and it’s not that your child is lazy.

Who is finding solutions at TLC?

Because we talk so much about learning challenges, it is easy to make the mistake that we only work with learning disabilities. Truth is, we work with a very wide range of students! We have clients from grades 1-12 and many adult clients too. Although some do have IEPs and 505 plans, most of our students don’t have diagnosed learning disabilities at all.

Parents:

- Any parent who is watching their child struggle with Common Core math! - Any parent who worries about their child’s performance - in school. - Any parent who is frustrated over homework. - Any parent who can’t find what motivates their child - Any parent paying for tutoring year after year. - Any parent wishing for their child to become more independent in their academic work. - Any parent with a “gut feeling” there is something “not right.”

Through a one-on-one cognitive approach, we help identify the underlying problem, and fix it, so that learning becomes comfortable and efficient. THAT is when motivation and enjoyment for school comes back, and THAT is when we see confident and independent learners.

Students:

- Any student who is working harder than they should - Any child who spends hours on homework, & lingers on problems that should take less time. - Any child who just isn’t showing their potential in school – whether they are struggling or “just doing okay.” - And of course, any child with an IEP or 504 that wants to improve their learning skills.

What do we do? We teach academic skills through the development of the underlying skills needed for each academic skill. The Learning Continuum Shows graphically how we approach helping students in becoming confident, motivated and independent in school:

{

TLC covers ALL areas by: addressing the ROOT CAUSE of the learning problem, and then applying these skills to academic areas above the surface

Therapeutic Learning Center 990 Highland Drive | Suite 106-A info@therapeuticlearning.com

This SUMMER, we are HIGHLIGHTING MATH through the development of VISUAL-SPATIAL and REASONING skills. Math, in our new program, is the conduit for accessing skills and spurring growth in so many additional areas, including reading comprehension, writing content and executive function! Comparisons between baseline and post-program tests are showing incredible gains in all of these areas, and kids in grades 2-9 who have done the program, have been telling us things like, “Math is easy now!” and “I didn’t used to like math but now it’s my best subject.”

Helping Youth GROW Andi MacLeod Connects With Children at the Boys & Girls Clubs of San Dieguito by LINDA FRABL

A

ndi MacLeod, a resident of Solana Beach for the past 33 years, has cherished all of her opportunities for providing learning experiences that impact local youth. Whether as a teacher, tutor, or stay-at-home mom to two boys (now ages 27 and 31), Andi craved those moments when she could touch the lives of the next generation. That is why she is so grateful that her good friend introduced her to the wonderful world of volunteering for the Boys & Girls Clubs (BGC) of San Dieguito. Andi recalled, “My friend, Katie Pelisek, thought I might enjoy teaching gardening and farm-to-table concepts at the BGC’s Center for a Healthy Lifestyle. I was hooked after my first encounter gardening with the kids, and here I am today!” Andi has since expanded her role at the BGC, and has helped build a garden for its La Colonia Clubhouse, taught the garden club, helped start up an eco club to expose kids to the natural world around them, and is now tutoring children in reading and math at the STEAM club.

Name: Profession: Community: Family: Hobbies & Interests: Favorite Local Spots:

“I love putting my voice together with other people, whether it’s tutoring or gardening or taking a stand for something.”

Andi MacLeod Retired teacher and retired stay-at-home mom Solana Beach Husband – Don MacLeod; Sons – Jon and Ian Pickleball, boogie boarding Boys & Girls Clubs of San Dieguito La Colonia Clubhouse, because there is so much love there. Also love Claire’s and Handcrafted on Cedros.

Sharing a favorite memory from the flourishing gardening program, Andi exclaimed, “Exposing the kids to science and nature was a joy every day. We planted and grew seeds, and harvested enough for 70-80 people at a time, making finger salads, garden tacos, and kale smoothies.” At the STEAM club, she admires the resilience of the children she tutors. “They don’t even realize that whatever barriers they may have even exist. They just stay the course until they achieve,” Andi said. “It’s a great lesson to us all – that we can almost always do more than we think we can.” When it comes to her own pursuits, Andi keeps very busy. She gardens, takes bicycling vacations with her husband, draws, paints, sings in the choir with her fellowship, participates in the SeaWeeders Garden Club, and is active in several community groups. “I love putting my voice together with other people, whether it’s tutoring or gardening or taking a stand for something,” she said. “Every one of our actions count, so why not make them all count towards something good?” 

DIGITAL MUSIC: HOW CAN I CREATE IT? I

n the last decade the face of digital music recording has changed dramatically. Now, for a modest budget, a bedroom producer can have all of the tools necessary to make a great sounding recording. There’s only one issue… how do you use all this stuff?! Finding the DAW (digital audio workstation) that’s right for you can be a daunting enough task, but knowing the ins and outs of your software can take years to master without guidance. The best bet for any aspiring producer is targeted, hands-on training, customized to their program preferences, learning styles, and experience. YouTube might have a slew of videos, but it’s a distant second to an expert instructor with hands-on training. Luckily, Studio West employs a team of experienced engineers and producers that are happy to show students the ropes. One-onone instruction at Studio West offers aspiring creatives direct answers, not just to broad, easily searchable questions, but specific difficulties with workflow. Offering help in

topics including production and arrangement, mixing and recording, Pro Tools, Ableton Live, Logic Pro, and FL Studio, the team of experts knows that one-on-one lessons leads to progress in tracks production fairly quickly. Studio West offers one-on-one instruction options to all ages in addition to their year-long post-secondary diploma in audio production. Another not-to-miss opportunity is the Youth Programs, offered over seven individual weeks of summer camps. Pair this with the school year Production Workshop – a quarterly collective of talented kids meeting once a week to produce incredible music – and your teen has a head start in this amazing industry. If you want to up your game, hands-on training is your best bet! 

t’s commonly believed that to comprehend what they read, students must have strong decoding skills and adequate oral vocabulary. Unfortunately, many students who can decode well and understand words still haveStandard weak comprehension. What is the missing piece for these students? circle logo: They may have a learning weakness that prevents them from comprehending the language they read and hear. They might get parts or some details but may have difficulty remembering a book or whole story. Understanding directions may appear to go in one ear and out the other without a connection. Problems with reading comprehension may be due to weak concept imagery – the ability to create an imaged whole from oral and written language. This weakness causes individuals to get only parts of information they read or hear. The Visualizing and Verbalizing® program, authored by Lindamood-Bell Co-founder Nanci Bell, develops concept imagery as a basis for comprehension and higher order thinking and improves reading and listening comprehension, memory, oral vocabulary, critical thinking, and writing. When a student struggles with reading or is diagnosed with dyslexia, extra help often focuses on phonics and spelling rules. However, many students continue to struggle even after years of extra help. They may sound out a word, but it is slow and labored. They may substitute words when reading a paragraph. These students may spell words phonetically but are unable to remember the visual patterns of words (orthography). An important aspect of reading and spelling is symbol imagery, the ability to visualize the sounds and letters in words. Symbol imagery underlies both phoneme awareness and orthographic processing and is necessary for sounding out new words and quickly recognizing letters and common words. The Seeing Stars® program, also authored by Lindamood-Bell Co-founder Nanci Bell, develops symbol imagery as a basis for orthographic awareness, phonemic awareness, word attack, word recognition, spelling, and contextual reading fluency. TM The Visualizing and Verbalizing® and Seeing Stars® programs are research-validated. For information about peer-reviewed studies involving Lindamood-Bell, go to www.lindamoodbell.com/research. Voices for Children’s (VFC) eighth annual Wine Women and Shoes fundraiser was a great success this year. The event, co-chaired by Patricia Brutten and Marina Marrelli, was held on the rooftop deck at the Del Mar Plaza and included premium wine tasting, delicious food, a fashion marketplace, live auction, and a fashion show styled by Kristi Brooks. Over $500,000 was raised in support of VFC’s Court-Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) program. VFC works to transform the lives of abused, abandoned, or neglected children in the San Diego County foster care system by providing them with trained volunteer CASAs, who work one-on-one with a child or set of siblings to ensure their needs are met. VFC holds several fundraising events throughout the year, including the Fostering Hope Golf Classic in the spring and the Starry Starry Night gala in September. is Joint Commission accredited and licensed and certified by the State of California. As Jim and Patricia Brady stated, “We personally understand the toll that addiction takes on families and we want to be a part of the solution to this devastating problem.” According to Dr. Leslie Sanders, Program Director, research shows that therapy is effective when built on a relationship of mutual trust and respect. “At AToN Center, we offer one individual therapy session every weekday to allow our residents to build relationships with the clinical team. There are also three group therapy sessions each weekday, as well as a Saturday morning group. Our staff is committed to the long-term recovery of our residents,” explained Dr. Leslie Sanders. In addition, transportation is offered to community meetings such as SMART Recovery, LifeRing, Refuge Recovery, and 12 Step. With this exposure to multiple styles of meetings, residents are able to construct a support system that works for their individual needs. Self-care and balance are hallmarks of AToN Center’s program, therefore residents are offered an array of holistic services including: acupuncture, massage, hypnotherapy, physical therapy, meditation, yoga, nutritional education, SPECIAL ADVERTISEMENT

and personal training at AToN Center’s onsite gym. Recognizing the toll that addiction can have on families, AToN Center’s intensive family and couples therapy offers a supportive and therapeutic environment for families to come together and begin the healing process. AToN Center is a private, 10-acre sanctuary comprised of five estates and is limited to 25 residents to ensure that individualized care can be provided with a high staff to resident ratio. “It is our belief that a ‘one size fits all’ approach to addiction recovery can be ineffective. We are a Cognitive Behavioral Therapy-based program, and our clinical team is made up of licensed psychologists and certified chemical dependency counselors who specialize in treating depression, anxiety, and trauma through a multitude of therapeutic approaches,” stated Dr. Cassandra Cannon, Clinical Director. Treatment plans are individualized to meet each resident’s unique needs. The program at AToN Center is designed for motivated individuals, and the population generally consists of executives and professionals who are looking to make a dramatic change in their lives. he Super Dentists’ Dr. Kami Hoss and Dr. Nazli Keri, also known as their alter-egos Dr. Have One Super Smile and The Tooth Keri, respectively, are transforming the dental experience for children and adults. The Super Dentists is the largest, most trusted, topawarded group practice in San Diego, providing a unique patient experience through original movies, music, and fun superhero and villain characters. The offices look like theme parks and feature video games, a dress up area, and even a special door for children. “We’ve taken something that is typically feared and created an environment where kids beg to visit and don’t want to leave,” said Dr. Kami Hoss, Co-Founder of The Super Dentists. “Because we know that if kids like going to the dentist, they will go to the dentist and will take care of their mouths.” The Super Dentists experience begins before patients even step foot through the door with the practice’s innovative augmented reality app. Parents receive a link to the augmented reality welcome video and watch it with their

children so they know what to expect. They are also introduced to The Super Dentists characters: Dr. Have One Super Smile, The Tooth Keri, MeloD, Cavitar, and Molar. “The app has been downloaded thousands of times, because it’s fun and interactive,” said Dr. Kami Hoss. “Kids can take their picture with the characters to become part of the experience, then share photos and videos with their parents and friends via text or social media.” This summer, children will be able to experience a bit of The Super Dentists magic at home as well with the practice’s own line of characterinspired toothbrushes. Though pediatric dentistry is the core service at The Super Dentists, the practice also offers dentistry for parents and orthodontics for the whole family – and it can be fun, too! “We’ve changed everything adults hate about going to the dentist,” Dr. Kami Hoss said. The Super Dentists are very active in the community, especially with causes related to children and education. They regularly

present at community programs and speaking engagements and participate in career fairs at local schools. They also host on-site job shadowing opportunities, wellness fairs, and mouth guard fitting clinics. “Every year, hundreds of children across the county receive free dental care from our pediatric dentists during Free Dental Day,” Dr. Kami Hoss shared. And for the past 15 years, The Super Dentists has hosted its popular Candy Buy Back program during the week of Halloween, paying kids for their candy and then donating it to military troops overseas. More than 20,000 pounds of candy have been donated since the program began. “We love seeing the reaction of children and parents when they come to see The Super Dentists and interact with all of our services and amenities,” Dr. Hoss said. “We know how important oral health is to your overall health, and we are honored to be making a big difference in peoples’ lives and futures.” 

Pediatrics, Primary Care, and Express Care in Encinitas

U

C San Diego Health’s brand-new medical clinic is a one-stop shop for residents of Encinitas and surrounding communities. The new location, which opened in June, offers world-class care to patients of all ages in one convenient location. Infants, children, and teenagers receive compassionate care from pediatricians through all their developmental stages in a supportive, family-friendly environment. “A new patient to my practice can expect to collaborate with me on the health of their child,” said pediatrician Dr. Robert Coles. “I want parents to be involved, to ask questions, and for us to walk through the process together.” Services offered include prenatal consultations, newborn care, well-baby and well-child visits, and coordination with pediatric specialists if needed. Family medicine at UC San Diego Health offers providers who can care for the entire family, including children, adults,

and seniors. With a model of care that is based on building personal relationships and putting patients first, physicians emphasize communication, shared decision-making, and accessibility. “Family doctors take care of the whole patient, not just the medical and clinical aspect of their lives,” said primary care physician and Encinitas medical director Dr. Yewah Jung. “I like to ask my patients how their day was and how their family is, because those are often very important factors in a patient’s health.” Choosing UC San Diego Health for primary care also means that patients have access to an entire network of advanced specialty care, including the state-of-the-art Jacobs Medical Center hospital in La Jolla and various specialty services in nearby offices. For common health care needs such as coughs or ear infections, as well as wellness visits for certain kinds of

prescriptions or school health screenings, patients have a same-day access option with Express Care, available in Encinitas 12 hours a day, seven days a week. And with the Save My Spot feature, patients can check wait times online and save their spot in line so they spend less time at the clinic. UC San Diego Health is an integral part of the local community as a member of the Encinitas Chamber of Commerce and the North San Diego Business Chamber. All physicians and nurse practitioners are board certified and focused on the importance of accessible, personalized care. “I believe the patient and the doctor are part of a team,” said Dr. Jung. “My job is primarily to listen and figure out the tools to empower my patients to make healthy changes in their lives.” 

A Healthy Family Starts With a Doctor You Can Trust

M

anaging your family’s health care is not usually top of mind until a loved one is sick or you’ve had a life change. Choosing the right care can be overwhelming and confusing, but selecting a primary care doctor ahead of time helps ensure the best care for your family when the need arises. A primary care doctor coordinates your family’s routine and specialty care. Finding the right doctor will depend on your unique needs. If you haven’t given much thought to this important decision, here’s a good place to start: Decide which type of primary care doctor you want. There are four types of primary care doctors: • Pediatricians care for children and adolescents. • Family medicine doctors treat the whole family, from infants to older adults. • Internal medicine doctors treat adults age 18 and up. • Internal medicine/pediatric doctors are board certified in both internal medicine and pediatrics, and treat people of all ages.

Think about your personal preferences. • Are you more comfortable with a male or female doctor? • Do you want your doctor’s office close to your home or work? • Do you need a doctor who speaks a language other than English? • Which hospitals does the doctor admit to?

Consider convenience. Many North County families that have busy schedules look for a doctor who offers a wide variety of ways to access care. These can include: • Video and phone appointments. • The convenience of a medical center where many services, such as pharmacy, lab, radiology, and urgent care, are all under one roof. • Same-day appointments. • After-hours pediatric care for when the kids are sick. • The ability to securely manage your and your family’s health care online by messaging your doctor’s office, making appointments, viewing lab results, and more. Confirm your insurance coverage. When you find the ideal doctor, you’ll need to verify if they are in your health plan network. Call the number listed on your insurance card to confirm, and let your insurance carrier know you’ve selected that person as your new primary care doctor. Sharp Rees-Stealy can help you navigate your options and make it easy to find a doctor. Plus, they accept almost all health insurance plans. Select your doctor at sharp.com/srsdoctor or by calling 858-264-2539.  July | August 2019 • DELSOLMAGAZINE.COM • 25

SADDLE UP IN SAN DIEGO Take to the Trails and Make New Equine Friends This Summer by LAINEY KRAL

T

here’s nothing quite like leaning back in the saddle or petting a velvety nose while the blue summer sky stretches above you. San Diego is home to a vibrant, varied equine community. Whether you’re the parent of an enthusiastic future cowgirl, a grown-up barn kid who hasn’t ridden in years, or just plain curious, there are plenty of opportunities to get involved and experience something new. Besides lessons and summer camps, guided trail rides are a great opportunity for new riders or those just getting back in the saddle. Options include giddying up through the hills of Poway, riding through the surf on a beach ride, and wine tasting adventures in Temecula. Many facilities offer both public and private rides – especially for larger groups, it’s smart to call ahead to confirm availability. Be sure to check the weather policy too, in case of cancellations. If getting in the saddle isn’t your style, there are still plenty of opportunities to enjoy the world of horses from the ground. The Del Mar Racetrack may be San Diego’s most famous equine destination, but don’t miss the hunter, jumper, and equitation events at nearby Showpark of San Diego. The 2019 Poway Rodeo is also coming up on Sept. 27 and 28, showcasing Western disciplines like barrel racing and roping. San Diego even has a thriving polo scene – check out organizations like Lakeside Polo Club, Poway Polo Club, or San Diego Polo Club for beginner lessons or upcoming events to watch. You can also combine a love of horses with a love of making a difference. The San Diego area has a number of therapeutic riding centers and equine rescues that are often open to volunteers and support. Whatever your interests and wherever you go, whether you’re sitting astride a thoroughbred or a pony, remember to pause for a bit and just enjoy the moment. Have a good ride! 

STABLE SAFETY • Wear closed-toe shoes, and strap on your helmet before getting in the saddle. • When meeting an unfamiliar horse, always ask its owner whether it’s okay to pet it, feed treats, or take photos. • Walk, don’t run! Sudden movements and loud noises can make horses nervous. • Pay attention to facility rules and listen to your instructor – every barn and every horse is unique!

pproximately 370 guests attended Serving Seniors’ sixth annual Experience of a Lifetime Gala at the Del Mar Country Club in May. The “Stories for the Ages”themed event featured a cocktail reception, gourmet dinner, live and silent auctions, and a popular wine grab, raising $435,000 to support the organization’s programs and services. “The San Diego community once again came together to not only raise critical funds, but also to shine a bright light on vulnerable seniors and the daily struggles they face,” said Serving Seniors President and CEO Paul Downey. “We are honored to continue to do the good work of this organization by touching more lives and providing more nutritious meals to the thousands of San Diego seniors in need.” Serving Seniors is a nonprofit agency dedicated to helping seniors in poverty live healthy and fulfilling lives through comprehensive

wraparound services including nutritious meals, affordable and transitional housing, supportive social services, healthcare, and enrichment. This innovative approach has earned national recognition for helping seniors remain healthy and independent, and Serving Seniors is the only organization in San Diego County – and one of the few in the United States – that provides such a broad base of vital services to vulnerable older adults. Nearly 5,000 low-income seniors rely on the organization’s services every year. Since its inception in 1970, Serving Seniors has served over 12 million meals, serving 2,600 meals a day at 10 congregate dining sites and via home delivery to homebound seniors across San Diego County. Colossus Painting Provides Its Customers With a Better Product for an Affordable Price

rior to starting Colossus Painting, Joshua Berner sold paint to contractors, using his expertise to teach them how to resolve issues and specify which types of paint would work best for a given project. It wasn’t long before Joshua decided to use his knowledge of the painting industry to start his own painting company and, in 2008, Colossus Painting was born. “I wanted to create a company that could serve customers much better and provide a better product for an affordable price,” Joshua explained. Today, Colossus Painting has made Joshua’s dream a reality by providing interior and exterior painting of homes and businesses, while also offering repair of stucco, drywall, and wood. “Colossus is unique in its approach to a project,” stated Joshua. “We tailor your job to the best system or options of systems for your home. This differs from a lot of other companies in the area.” Color retention is a big issue with exterior paint jobs here in San Diego as well as washability and durability they contend with on interior jobs. Colossus has solutions for this. “Our feeling is when your job is complete, it should stand out in appearance and longevity compared to those painted by someone else,” Joshua added. It’s important to note that a little paint can go a long way in changing the appearance of a home. “People forget about paint,” said Joshua. “It is a great way to make your home look great in a relatively short amount of time. We paint and stain a lot of cabinets, front doors, and garage doors.” From the beginning, the team at Colossus Painting has made an effort to give back. “We have helped a lot of schools and people,” explained Joshua. “We’ve painted homes for free. It’s a joy for us and our workers as much as it is for the homeowner who is having a difficult life situation.” Joshua is proud of his family-oriented, friendly, and professional staff. “I believe that when someone hires us, they realize they are dealing with a knowledgeable and professional company and will receive a great paint job,” shared Joshua. “We help the customer through the process and can get them the right tools to make their job successful.”  34 • DELSOLMAGAZINE.COM • July | August 2019
