little over a year ago, I wrote about how our kids were taking music lessons and having fun learning to play and sing various popular songs. They are now into music more than ever before, and a lot has happened in a year. In case you are hearing about this for the first time, Peyton plays guitar and sings. Audrey plays drums and piano, but she insists that drums are her number one. The two of them have come a long way over the last year. For starters, they formed a band and decided to officially name their two-person “brother and sister” duo Call Me Breaux. When we discussed their name choice, both Audrey and Peyton explained that people have called them by their last name (pronounced “bro”) their entire life – especially in sports – so it just makes sense for a band name. When my wife and I realized how much they liked singing and performing, we started to gradually convert our dining room into a small music studio. On any given day, you can often hear some type of music being performed by one or both of them. And every once in a while, something magical happens when they come together and play their growing set of songs. It’s fun to be preparing dinner and hear your kids jamming out in the other room. Who needs a radio when you can get live performances inside your house daily? And although they love to play music for the pure sense of accomplishment, now they’ve experienced the thrill of performing live on stage. Last month, they were invited to play a set at the world-famous Whiskey a Go Go in Hollywood. A couple of weeks later, they played the House of Blues in San Diego. This was particularly special for them because quite a few of their friends were at the show. They made it clear to me that having their friends in the audience was the coolest thing ever! It’s a pretty crazy thing to stand in the audience and watch your kids (ages 13 and 12) get up on stage in front of a crowd. As a parent, I experience a wide range of emotions. I’m nervous for them. I’m proud of them. And I’m amazed at their determination and willingness to put themselves out there. So far, they’ve only played cover songs. But recently, they have decided that writing and producing their own original songs is where they want to go. They said that it would be awesome to hear their songs playing on the radio one day, so now they are more determined than ever to make this happen. A special thank you to The Fine Tune Academy for continuing to teach music theory to our kids, to Studio West for providing a great local professional recording atmosphere, and to family and friends (you know who you are) that offer amazing support for their music journey. Be sure to check out their next performance at the House of Blues in San Diego on March 31. A limited number of discounted tickets are available. Email hello@callmebreaux.com for more information.

seventh grader at Earl Warren Middle School, Zoey Preston has lived in Del Mar for her entire life. Only three blocks from the beach, she surfs and plays volleyball there often, and enjoys time with her two golden retrievers, Ritter and Sherman. When it’s time to go to school, Zoey’s favorite and best subject is English, because she loves reading, writing, and the atmosphere in the class. In sports, she played for the Earl Warren volleyball team last fall, while also playing competitive club volleyball. “My parents have always played beach volleyball, and my uncle was the indoor volleyball coach at UCSB,” she said, “so I think it was natural for me to be interested in the sport too.” Her favorite sport, however, is snowboarding, which surprises

some people. “I have been skiing for 10 years and snowboarding for four,” she shared. Zoey also plays the guitar, which she learned when taking lessons with a friend at a music studio. She’s in a band called Synesthesia. For the Winter Arts Festival Play at school, Zoey played a “crazy old nun named Mary Agatha” in the play Murder Can Be Habit Forming. The interpretation of Mary Agatha included a high-pitched voice with a Southern accent. “A lot of people complimented me on my accent,” she said proudly. She acted in five plays before when she was at Del Mar Hills Elementary, including Peter Pan, The Lorax, Mary Poppins, The Wizard of Oz, and Alice in Wonderland. “My favorite part of being onstage is letting everyone see how hard I’ve worked and sharing an amazing performance with everybody,” she said. “Oh, and also making people laugh!” Looking to the future, Zoey has wanted to go to the University of Colorado in Boulder since fifth grade, and she plans to become an author or English teacher. Zoey’s already gotten a head start writing her own stories and books. “My teachers inspire me because they love what they do, they are all energetic and fun,” she explained, “and they push me to become the best person I can be.” ¢

group of sixth grade students from Del Mar Heights Elementary School is making a difference for homeless students at Monarch School. Sixth grader Isa Wiklund, her mother Oriana Wiklund, and classmate Natalia Mochernak wanted to do something to give back to the community, and decided to raise donations for Monarch School, which has served students who live in shelters, motels, single-roomoccupancy housing, at camp sites, in cars, or on the streets for more than 30 years. Isa and Natalia then got other classmates Ian Arnold, Bella Pavan, Kathryn Reese, Grant Smith, Madeline Canning, and Makena Khoury involved – all of whom are members of Del Mar Heights’ Dolphin Leadership Club.

The group organized a twoweek fundraiser at their school, which included donation cups in every classroom, collecting donations every morning during drop-off, a bake sale, and a special performance of “We Are the World” at the talent show to raise awareness. “It was a full-school effort,” Natalia said. “Everyone helped – all the students, teachers, and staff.” Much to the students’ surprise, they raised a total of $945.51 in cash donations, as well as hundreds of items most needed by the homeless student population at Monarch School such as toothbrushes, toothpaste, dental floss, shampoo, lotion, hairbrushes, and lip balm. “It may seem small,” said Isa, “but these things are important for kids who go to Monarch School.” The experience showed the students that they can make a difference by giving to others in their community. ¢

n 2004, the Caccavo family – which includes parents Jim and Kimberly and children Christopher and Grace – was happily living in New York City when they bought a summer home in Solana Beach. “Jim discovered waves and surfing in Solana Beach,” shared Kimberly, “and decided to spend every day going in the water until he mastered the sport.” In 2006, they moved to San Diego permanently. Now, 12 years later, the Caccavos are living – and loving! – the West Coast lifestyle. Jim is an avid surfer and still enjoys his daily dip in the ocean. Kimberly appreciates all the opportunities for outdoor activities, like yoga and hiking. “We love the community and how easy it is to get everywhere,” they said. “But most of all, we love the sunset and the beach.” They also enjoy playing charades and traveling together.

Christopher (17) and Grace (13) both attended St. James Academy for elementary school when they moved from New York. Christopher is now a junior at Cathedral Catholic High School and Grace is in seventh grade at R. Roger Rowe School. Both kids are active outdoors, and enjoy soccer, surfing, and snowboarding. Christopher also likes hiking, spearfishing, fly fishing, and snorkeling, while Grace adores tennis, skiing, and fashion. Jim and Kimberly both keep busy with work. Jim is the founder and managing general partner at Steelpoint Capital Partners, investing in mid-size companies in the health and wellness sector. Kimberly is the founder and CEO of GRACEDBYGRIT, a company that produces highperformance athletic apparel designed to make

women feel empowered and safe. “Every woman has experienced a difficult moment that she thinks might just break her,” explained Kimberly. “We have created an engaged community of women who work together, support each other, and teach future generations what inclusivity looks like, what empowerment feels like, and what it means to be part of a brand that celebrates the stories of each woman as she finds her strength.” When they aren’t working or surfing, the Caccavos are active in the community. Jim is a board member for a number of philanthropic organizations, and Kimberly is on the advisory board at Cathedral Catholic and Chelsea’s Light Foundation. They are also involved in their church and in local volunteer endeavors. This active family of four is truly loving life in Solana Beach! ¢

ORAL SURGERY PROFILE

Putting Patient Care First Boulder Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Offers Patients Optimal Results in a Caring Environment by JENNIFER FRAKES | photos provided by Boulder OMS

t Boulder OMS, patient comfort and care are at the core of the practice. “Dr. Albert Lin and Dr. Robert Gramins take the time to understand each patient’s needs and offer services that deliver optimal results. We treat each patient in a relaxed and caring environment and utilize the latest techniques and treatment options,” explained Kelly Zielinski, marketing and public relations manager for Boulder OMS. Originally founded in 1972, Boulder OMS is the oldest and most established oral and facial surgery practice in the greater Poway area. With a track record of exceptional results and the goal of being the most trusted and respected oral and maxillofacial surgery practice in San Diego, Dr. Lin and Dr. Gramins are committed to providing the highest standards of care. Boulder OMS treats a wide range of patients, from preteens to older adults and everyone in between. The practice specializes in wisdom tooth extraction, dental implants, facial trauma, oral pathology, corrective jaw surgery, Botox and fillers, and dental alveolar surgery. “Our doctors spent an additional four years in school for their oral and maxillofacial surgery residency. This makes them uniquely qualified to perform surgery on the face and in the mouth,” stated Zielinski. Both Dr. Lin and

Dr. Gramins are Fellows of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons and are board certified as Diplomates by the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. They are also among a select group of oral and maxillofacial surgeons that are licensed to perform facial cosmetic surgery in the state of California. Boulder OMS is an accredited surgery center and adheres to strict guidelines for safety and patient care as set forth by the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC). Dr. Lin and Dr. Gramins voluntarily had the practice accredited by the AAAHC, a process which includes thorough onsite reviews of policies and practices by expert surveyors every two years. According to Zielinski, this is the highest level of certification and ensures that Boulder OMS is at the forefront of technology, safety, and patient care. Dr. Lin and Dr. Gramins are also dedicated to giving back to the community. They are the oral and facial surgeons to the San Diego Gulls and actively volunteer their skills and expertise to the Oral Cancer Foundation, Las Patronas, The Ronald McDonald House, and other local charities. LOCAL ARTIST TENA NAVARRETE FINDS PURPOSE IN CREATING by KELLEY GUSICH | photo by Soul of Photography

A

rtist Tena Navarrete has lived in Olde Del Mar for the past 19 years, enjoying the small town feel and living among the Torrey Pines. In her studio, Tenart, she creates stories with images instead of words. The images reflect what she’s feeling at a particular moment in time, and Tena uses the elements of design to convey a certain mood or feeling. She finds inspiration in nature, architecture, and everyday experiences, like shadows cast on walls or streets, and cracks on the pavement. “It seems I see things that others may not take the time to notice,” she said. Though Tena’s University of Southern California schooling resulted in an education in psychology and physical therapy, after raising her daughters she went back to school and immersed herself in art classes. She painted every chance she got and practiced seeing what could be created with paint and canvas. After trying watercolor, oil, monoprinting, silkscreening, and photography, Tena found she was able to express herself more fully with acrylic paints and other objects at her disposal. “I like finding things that others dismiss or throw away,” she shared. “I find excitement in repurposing – finding ways to use them in my work.” She also belongs to an art group with other talented artists. “It was started by local artist and teacher Jean McNeil Sargent,” Tena explained. They have professional and emerging artists working together to support one another. Tena also volunteers as a tutor with Casa de Amistad, and experiences great joy in donating artwork and some proceeds from her artwork to this and other organizations that help others. It might surprise people to learn that Tena travels monthly by train to Disneyland. “I never got to go as a child so I’m satisfying that inner child as an adult,” she smiled. She also dances zydeco, having fallen in love with the grassroots music and the Creole culture. She belongs to a local zydeco group called the Bon Temps Social Club, and travels all over the country to dance festivals. The most rewarding part of creating and sharing her art? “Seeing how others connect with the work through their own life experiences.” Tena’s advice to aspiring artists includes listening to what each piece is trying to say, allowing it to evolve, and experimenting to see where it goes. “Enjoy the beauty that surrounds us,” she said. “Find art that you connect with, and place it in your home where you can enjoy it.” ¢

COMMUNITY STUFF

Bench Project Serves Hundreds in Mexico Local nonprofit Sustainable Surplus was recently tasked with finding a new home for 150 used bus stop benches from the City of San Diego. The benches, which were headed to Miramar Landfill, are made of difficult-to-recycle and non-decomposing fiberglass material. When no use was found for the benches in San Diego, Sustainable Surplus CEO Sue Prelozni reached out to Adolfo Delgado, Binational Coalition of Nonprofits (BCN) partner and executive director of the Comité Binacional Unidos por la Niñez (CBUN) in Mexico. With Adolfo’s help, the benches were refurbished, repurposed, and distributed to several cities throughout Mexico, where they will be used in parks, churches, schools, and community centers. BCN was founded in 2017 to facilitate the handling of donated items that cannot be reused or repurposed locally, resulting in at least 12 crossborder donations in the past year. Rob Schupp, Director of Marketing and Communications for the Metropolitan Transit System, said, “This is a great example of agencies coming together to find solutions that are good for the planet.” For more information visit www.sustainablesurplus.org.

CARLSBAD ART FARM

C

arlsbad Art Farm is a small visual arts school tucked away on a beautiful stream-side woodland property in coastal North County. Art Farm’s camps for grades 2–8 are designed to inspire a deep connection to animals and the natural world through traditional studio art education. Winner of the “Most Awesome Camp for Kids in SoCal” award for the past three years, Art Farm’s unique blend of outstanding art instruction in the woods with a menagerie of farm animals has enchanted local students and families for the past 14 years. While this is an arts camp, kids don’t sit down all day. Instruction takes place at a variety of outdoors locations, inside the Imaginarium Print Studio, in the barn, and down by the creek. They keep it moving! Campers are assigned to one of three base camps based on grade level. Students learn how to sketch live animals, draw in charcoal, develop paintings, work a monotype printing press, and design paper boats for the popular Friday Boat Pageant and Creek Race. Three hours daily are dedicated art classes. The balance of time is spent with staff exploring the local habitat, hanging out with the animals, enjoying lunch, and making new friends. Each week ends with the All Camp Art Show, to which family and friends are invited. Camp sessions begin June 18 and are held Monday through Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Camp is extended to 4 p.m. Fridays only for the student art show. RSF ATTACK SOCCER

R

SF Attack Soccer offers camps for both recreational and competitive players during the summer in Rancho Santa Fe. The recreational camps are designed for players who want to have fun while working on their technical ability and improving their skills. The camps run for five days in the mornings from 9:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. and are offered in June and August. On a typical day, the campers will participate in a group warm-up and then break into their age and skill-appropriate groups for the rest of the morning. The camps maintain a small coach-to-camper ratio so that RSF Attack coaches are able to interact personally with each camper, better providing them with skill development. All campers receive a customized ball and t-shirt. Attack Player Development Camps have been designed for ambitious players who are committed in their development to the dynamic ball-possession style of the modern game. The themes throughout the week include improving ball mastery, possession with purpose to attack, creativity in the final third, goal scoring, defensive intensity, and maintaining a composed but aggressive mindset. The player will leave the camp with enhanced fundamental technique and improved game intelligence, and will be inspired to play with greater confidence. Campers should come ready to work with like-minded, high-level players and a desire to improve their game. These camps run for four days, typically in the morning from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. All Attack camps are conducted by Director of Coaching Malcolm Tovey and the Attack professional staff of coaches. MATHNASIUM OF CARMEL VALLEY

T

he Mathnasium team believes that every child has the ability to be successful in math. It’s a matter of teaching in a way that makes sense to them. Studies have shown that over summer vacation, students can lose a significant amount of math computational skills learned during the school year. With the pressures and time constraints of the school year at a standstill, summer is the perfect time to catch up and get ahead in math. Mathnasium summer programs are designed to address summer learning loss or the “summer slide.” All teaching takes place at the center – no extra homework. Trained instructors will help your kids retain what they learned in math class this year, so they’re well equipped for a strong start in the fall. When math makes sense, kids excel – whether they need to catch up or want to get ahead! Learn more at www.Mathnasium.com/ CarmelValley. Call today to schedule a free assessment and trial. ¢

R E A L E S TAT E W AT C H

Confusion Slowing the Local Market by SCOTT VOAK

W

hile San Diego as a whole is experiencing a slight slowdown in real estate activity (a reduction of 4.5% in sales year-over-year), the North County inland market (Poway Unified School District, Scripps Ranch, and Mira Mesa) is seeing a much more pronounced lull in the market to start 2018 (a 14.1% reduction). I believe there are three main reasons for this, and all of them revolve around future uncertainty. The first two affect the upper end market throughout the county. Those factors are the new tax law and recent volatility in the stock market and interest rates. We know the new tax law is going to hurt California homeowners, but until people meet with their accountants to prepare 2017 taxes, they probably won’t have a firm idea of how much it will impact them. This type of uncertainty causes people to become conservative and put off major purchases like housing. Hopefully, once people know what the increase will be next year, they will be more comfortable making a move in the housing market. You can count on the fact that the stock market is going to be more volatile and interest rates are generally going to move up. While that is not helpful, the one thing you can do if you are considering a home purchase is get your down payment out of the stock market. There’s nothing worse than finding your dream home on Sunday and watching

your down payment disappear on Monday if the market falls. The third area of uncertainty affects us more in PUSD. That is the uncertainty surrounding the attempted takeover of Qualcomm by Broadcom. Poway School District is a magnet for engineers who want their kids to get a good education. Two years ago, when there was an announced layoff at Qualcomm, the local housing market really slowed down until layoff notices went out, and as soon as people knew they still had jobs, the market took off. I have talked to several of my Qualcomm clients and they are indeed sitting on the sidelines until the situation is resolved. Given that uncertainty over taxes will likely last into April and the Qualcomm situation may take another 30 to 60 days to resolve itself (as of this writing), I anticipate a slower market through March and then a very strong May through July. ¢
