Horsing Around

’m from Southeast Texas, so I’ve been on my fair share of horses growing up. My good friend had a couple of horses that we would saddle up and ride to the levee. And no, I’m not making this stuff up – there really was a levee about a mile from my childhood home. I’m pretty sure that people have written songs about this. When I met my wife about 20 years ago, I learned that she grew up with horses. Over the years, she shared many stories of riding on the endless trails in Poway – many of which have long been taken over by developments and homes. The time that she spent with her horses growing up made a lasting impression that she holds close to her heart. Our youngest daughter, Audrey, started taking riding lessons a couple of years ago. Although she has traditionally split her extracurricular hours between soccer, softball, and music, we noticed that she quickly developed a strong passion for horseback riding. Last year Audrey approached us with the idea of adopting or rescuing a horse. At first, we thought the idea was absurd. But this didn’t deter her. While she could have accepted our decision and moved on, instead, she began developing a plan and documenting everything that needed to take place in order to accomplish her goal. She presented her plan to us – which included her own financial and time commitments. And as you may have guessed by reading this and seeing the photo, Audrey did find a horse that needed a new home. In fact, she actually found two horses (eight-year-old brothers from different mothers). Thankfully the horses had not been abused, but they had been neglected. Unfortunately, they were left in their stalls at a facility in Los Angeles with very little socializing and human attention for the past year and a half. Little did these two horses know, they were about to get the full attention of a very determined and dedicated 13-year-old girl. Over the past couple of months, we have watched these horses transform from nervous and shy creatures to warm and loving family members. I have observed a beautiful bond develop between my daughter and these giant animals that is very difficult to describe. Although I was skeptical at first, what started out to be a project for my daughter and wife has turned into a family affair. It has been refreshing to take an hour here and an hour there to join them at the stables. Time seems to slow down while we are there. Technology is optional at best. It is very tranquil and therapeutic. But most importantly, I get to watch and be involved while memories are made that we will carry with us for the rest of our lives.

ocal resident Dee Leone is a successful writer. In addition to penning three popular children’s books, Dee has also written educational books, poems, plays, stories, activity sheets for Highlights magazine, and numerous online articles. She recently did a reading of her second children’s book, Dough Nights and Dragons, at this year’s San Diego Festival of Books, held at Liberty Station in August. “I was thrilled to read that book at the festival, which was inspired by my wondering how doughnuts were created,” Dee commented. She added, “The most rewarding part of being an author is to get stories into the hands of young readers or listeners and to watch them smile, laugh, and get turned on by books. My goal is to write stories that will ignite an appetite for reading and set a child’s imagination on fire.” Armed with a B.S. in Education, Dee has taught elementary classes in Ohio, California, and Texas, and was even a teacher’s aide for a gifted program in Alaska. Mixing her vast experience teaching youngsters with her innate curiosity with the world around her, Dee is never at a loss for book subject ideas. Her first children’s book, Bizz and Buzz Make Honey Buns, came about because Dee is a fan of homophone wordplay. She explained, 10 • DELSOLMAGAZINE.COM • March | April 2019

“This book is about two ‘bee’-fuddled insects that want to make a sweet treat but don’t quite understand the directions. They use a little ‘flower’ instead of a little ‘flour’ to follow a recipe, and that’s just the ‘bee’-ginning of their silly endeavor!” Her latest children’s book, Nature’s Lullaby Fills the Night, materialized after Dee’s own travels. She elaborated, “I enjoy taking photos of nature – from close-ups of flowers to wide panoramic vistas – and have had the good fortune to visit incredible places. So when I was looking at images of swans on a glistening lake in Slovenia, or leaping dolphins off the coast of New Zealand, I was inspired to write a lullaby about them.” Forever influenced by beautiful scenery, Dee is especially grateful to call San Diego home. She exclaimed, ”I like the quiet, natural surroundings, the hummingbirds and butterflies that flit about all over our yard, the weather, the charming village area, and the golf courses in the vicinity.” When she isn’t writing, Dee loves scrapbooking, reading, and learning to play golf. 

SAN ELIJO LAGOON CONSERVANCY BREAKS GROUND

an Elijo Lagoon Conservancy broke ground on habitat enhancement of Harbaugh Seaside Trails, the threeacre overlook bordering Solana Beach and Cardiffby-the-Sea, in early March. Improvements of the open space include: removal of invasive plant species for native plantings that will attract pollinators and link the habitat to San Elijo Lagoon Ecological Reserve; installation of a viewing deck and interpretive signs on the northern end; installation of a donor monument, designed by Coastal Rail Trail artist Betsy Schulz, on the southern end; and construction of a railroad undercrossing that will provide visitors safer coastal access to the reserve. The restoration is expected to take one year, with an anticipated grand opening of the trails in early 2020.

San Diego’s north coastal communities fought to protect Harbaugh Seaside Trails, formerly known as The Gateway Property, for years. In 2011, San Elijo Lagoon Conservancy was able to purchase the property with the support of lenders and a $1.15 million gift from The Harbaugh Foundation. “Harbaugh Seaside Trails, with its tremendous views of the ocean and San Elijo Lagoon, is a great asset to the public,” said Joe Balla, Director of The Harbaugh Foundation. “We are proud to have played a part in preserving this landmark site for all to enjoy.” Volunteer opportunities will be open to the community to help plant native species in the fall. Solana Beach Little League Scholarship

Concerts in Del Mar

The Solana Beach Little League (SBLL) will be offering its second annual $2,000 scholarship this year. In 2018, the SBLL Board of Directors voted to create the scholarship for former members of the league to support their college tuition. “We all felt like the next level of giving back to these great kids was to help out with something that would be meaningful after they ‘graduated’ from our Little League,” said SBLL President Patrick Johnson. Last year’s recipients were Arjun Nichani and Jacob Stevenson. The 2019 scholarship application is open to high school seniors who have spent at least two years as part of SBLL. They must submit an essay describing their Little League experience and how it impacted their life. Submissions will be accepted from April 1 through June 1, and the winner will be announced by July 1. There are plenty of opportunities for the community to experience high-quality live music in Del Mar. The Friends of the Del Mar Library presents a bluegrass concert on the third Thursday of each month. Upcoming performances at the library include The Shoreline Pickers on March 21, Philly and the Cheesesteaks on April 18, and Prairie Sky on May 16. All concerts start at 6:30 p.m. and are open to the public. The Del Mar Foundation’s Cultural Arts Committee hosts the popular First Thursdays series from September through June, featuring a monthly lecture or concert. Most concerts are held at the Powerhouse, beginning with a wine and cheese reception at 6:30 p.m. followed by the program at 7 p.m. While the current season is sold out, community members are invited to add their name to the wait list and sign up for First Thursdays events in the 2019-2020 series beginning in April. The committee also hosts its Bluegrass and Beyond concert series, bringing nationally recognized bluegrass and acoustic musicians to Del Mar each year. Chip-In-For-Kids Charity Golf Tournament

Applications are open for the Don Diego Scholarship Foundation’s 2019 scholarships, offering a total of $66,000 to 28 outstanding students who reside in San Diego County and have participated in the San Diego County Fair or other activities associated with the Del Mar Fairgrounds. Four scholarships of $5,000, $2,500, $1,500, and $1,000 will be offered in each of four categories: 4-H, FFA, Employee, and Exhibitor/Participant. Ten Junior Livestock Auction Scholarships will be offered to students who qualify for the 4-H (now known as the Walter J. and Betty C. Zable Foundation 4-H Scholarship) or FFA Scholarship and who participate in the 2019 Fair’s Junior Livestock Auction. The foundation will also offer two $2,500 Vocational Education Scholarships and one $5,000 Spanjian Family Scholarship. Padres Pedal the Cause Padres Pedal the Cause, a nonprofit organization founded by North County residents Bill and Amy Koman, raised $2.9 million for local cancer research at its annual event in November at Petco Park. Over 2,500 participants cycled 25 to 100 miles on one of four routes across San Diego, spun in a high-energy stationary bike class, ran or walked a 5K, or rode a tricycle or scooter in the kids’ challenge. Padres Pedal the Cause Executive Director Anne Marbarger presented the check to beneficiary representatives from Moores Cancer Center at UC San Diego Health, Sanford Burnham Prebys Medical Discovery Institute, Salk Institute for Biological Studies, and Rady Children’s Hospital-San Diego at a celebratory gathering in January. “It’s inspiring to see the impact of the Padres Pedal community in San Diego,” said Anne. “Cancer affects every one of us in some way, and we are proud to invest in local research.” Since 2013, Padres Pedal the Cause has raised and donated over $10 million to fund 53 translational research projects and clinical trials. The Boys & Girls Clubs of San Dieguito (BGCSD) recently held its 14th Annual Chip-In-For-Kids Golf Tournament during the Farmers Insurance Open at the Torrey Pines Golf Course. Twenty-nine foursomes participated in the charity tournament, enjoying ocean views, catered breakfast and lunch, and a great day of golf on the course. The Latham & Watkins foursome, consisting of Craig Garner, Paul Najar, Scott DeNike, and Kevin Reyes, scored first place. Darren Morgan, Lance Wedegaertner, Craig Logan, and Mitch Clawson placed second by one stroke in a two-way tie with Cory Grant, Gary Burke, Nicholas Blair, and Ashley Huizing. This year’s tournament raised more than $100,000 to help further BGCSD’s mission of providing positive after-school programs and summer activities to develop the education, health, self-esteem, and character of the over 11,200 youth served annually. Operation Courage 5K and Fun Run Operation Courage Is Beautiful (OCIB) is celebrating its 10th anniversary with the first-ever Operation Courage 5K and Kids Fun Run. OCIB sends care packages to women on deployment in the military, with high-quality makeup, toiletries, women’s magazines, books, and well wishes. The care packages are a welcome bright spot during deployment. “It’s so nice to receive a package that I feel is curated specifically for women and our needs,” shared A1C B., Krislyn. The Fun Run and 5K will be held Saturday, March 16 at 9 a.m. at Kit Carson Park.
