Harbaugh Seaside Trails, the threeacre coastal overlook linking Cardiff-bythe-Sea and Solana Beach, is now officially open to the public and accessible for hiking, wildlife photography, dog walking, and peaceful contemplation in nature, following a special grand opening celebration in February. The trails feature a wave-shaped walking trail, spectacular ocean views from the shell-shaped observation deck, over 8,000 native plants that represent four Southern California coastal habitats, and the donor monument designed by artist Betsy Schulz with lagoon wildlife-themed mosaics, uniting the Coastal Rail Trail art theme.
Once slated for development for many years, the land was secured by Nature Collective, made possible by a $1.15 million gift
from The Harbaugh Foundation, and is now designated permanent open space, open daily from sunrise to sunset. “We saved these views together!” said Doug Gibson, Nature Collective Executive Director. “Today we celebrate – and generations will cherish what we refused to lose for our collective love of nature and community.”
Harbaugh Seaside Trails is named in honor of the late George and Betty Harbaugh, San Diego philanthropists who directed their estate planning to benefit nature and community. “It has been an honor and privilege to work with Nature Collective and our community to preserve this amazing property and to make it accessible now and for future generations,” said Harbaugh Foundation Director Joe Balla.
Nature Collective will host guided Sunset View Tours of Harbaugh Seaside Trails on March 12 and March 18, where visitors can learn more about the history of the property and experience its natural beauty firsthand. For more information visit www.thenaturecollective.org. ¢ SummerFuN2020!
