Dr. Tarkan Sidal Provides Procedures With Compassionate, Quality Care
Since its establishment in 1977, Torrey Pines Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery continues to grow and maintain its high standard of excellence. Several years ago, Dr. Tarkan Sidal took over the practice with a commitment to uphold its extraordinary reputation. “I enjoy following the footsteps of the original founders of Torrey Pines Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery by providing patient-centered care,” said Dr. Sidal. “I am

committed to providing the finest individual care and exceptional service in every aspect of patient treatment.”
Torrey Pines Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery offers a full scope of oral and maxillofacial surgery ranging from dental implant surgery, bone grafting, and wisdom teeth removal, to trauma, jaw surgery, and pathology. “If surgery needs to be performed in the hospital and a hospital stay is required, I am on staff at Scripps Memorial Hospital, Sharp Memorial Hospital,
Scripps Mercy Hospital, and Scripps Clinic,” noted Dr. Sidal. “We also diagnose and treat orofacial pain, facial injuries, and fractures.” Dr. Sidal prides himself on having a kind and compassionate approach toward his patients – a quality that helps to set his practice apart from others in its industry. “We believe in traditional values such as excellent customer service and personalized attention to our patients, and we treat every patient as if they were part of the family,” explained
Dr. Sidal. “We pride ourselves on attention to detail. We will make sure to fully explain the necessary procedures to patients and answer any questions they might have.” Both a licensed physician and oral maxillofacial surgeon, Dr. Sidal is expertly skilled in caring for face and jaw conditions. After receiving his Doctor of Dental Surgery Degree from the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), Dr. Sidal participated in several oral and maxillofacial surgery internship and externship programs. He then completed his oral and maxillofacial surgery residency at the University of Illinois at Chicago Medical Center. “Upon completing medical school, my curiosity in learning and everlasting passion in the dentistry, medicine and surgery, brought me back home to UCSF where I completed a prestigious Chief Resident appointment in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery as well as a General Surgery Internship at the UCSF, Department of Surgery,” elaborated Dr. Sidal. “I then embarked on completing two years of rigorous fellowship training at the San Diego Center for Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.” Since then, Dr. Sidal – who is a member of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons and Oral and Facial Surgeons of California – has participated in various surgical missions to underprivileged communities where he has volunteered to treat patients with maxillofacial defects and injruies. “During my fellowship, I also served as an integral part of an elite reconstructive team of surgeons at Sharp Memorial Hospital, partnering with Operation of Hope,” recalled Dr. Sidal.
Today, Dr. Sidal is enthusiastic about continuing the legacy of Torrey Pines Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery and is steadfast on providing a personalized and relaxed atmosphere with a professional staff that is focused on building trusting relationships with patients. “We believe in compassion and your comfort tops our list of priorities,” shared Dr. Sidal. “We are advocates of healthy quality living, body and soul nourishment for supporting healthier and productive lives, and we believe in patient care where patients are evaluated as a whole and not just focused on parts.” ¢

Local Force, Global
California All-Stars Cheer (CAS) began its story 19 years ago in North County San Diego. With more than 1,000 athletes throughout six locations – San Marcos, the Bay Area, Las Vegas, Ventura, Ontario, and Scottsdale, AZ – CAS has worked its way to offering the most competitive cheer program in the state of California, gaining international recognition along the way as 12-time World Champions. “All-Stars encompasses all the fun aspects about cheerleading, including dance, stunts, bonding with friends, and gaining confidence and skill through performances. Building the children from the inside out is what we do, because we focus on them as a whole,” said Tannaz Kirichkow, Owner of CAS. “Our goal is to make sure our kids gain a strong sense of self-confidence that will carry on for the rest of their lives.”
CAS offers tumbling camps in the summer, which focus on tumbling techniques for beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels. The camps can last two or three days and are three hours per day. Camps are open to both boys and girls. CAS provides a sense of work ethic and life lessons in each of its classes, including a sense of bonding and camaraderie for cheerleaders who travel to national and international competitions.
by DANIELA ALVAREZ | photos by PortrArt Creations CALIFORNIA ALL-STARS CHEER FOCUSES ON ATHLETIC EXCELLENCE Local Force, Global Recognition
“People come to California All-Stars for top-quality coaching and family atmosphere,” explained Tannaz. “Life lessons, core values, and athletic excellence come hand-in-hand. We love to see our kids succeed on and off the floor!” CAS’s list of awards and recognitions includes 400 National Titles, Grand Champions, Program Champions, Innovative Choreography Awards, Judges Choice Awards, Paid Bids to the USASF Cheerleading Worlds, 2009 through 2013 World Champions, IALC Champions, 2010 through 2014 NCA National Champions, three silver medals at the 2008 Cheerleading Worlds, and 2013 Summit Champions. Marilee Chaney of North County said, “CAS is about positive attitudes. From the ‘can do’ approach toward all athletes
to seeing the staff enthusiastically hug a cheerleader when she gets a new tumbling skill – from the beginning, the message has been ‘you are capable, and you are welcome here.’” With a trained and energetic staff, spacious gym, and professional instruction, CAS has something for every budding cheerleader out there! Tryouts for new teams will be held May 13, 14, and 16, and students should preferably be there all three days. The tryout process determines team placement. Everyone is placed on a team; there are no cuts. CAS also has “prep” teams for families that are looking to enroll without the travel requirement. With the growing popularity of STEAM programs in schools, many parents are turning to technology camps to keep their students entertained and engaged during summer months. CodeREV Kids is one of Southern California’s fastest growing tech camps, and according to Founder Evan Boorman, offers the only standards-aligned summer tech program that focuses on math and science. Evan explained, “I started CodeREV to answer the question so many students have: ‘Why? Why should I learn math, science, or engineering?’ In our project-based classes and curriculum, students automatically answer these questions for themselves, since they need to learn these topic areas to create the fun and amazing projects they build and code in camp.”
CodeREV offers a variety of classes for kids ages 6 to 16 to appeal to all technology-based interests. Its MathCraft program uses the popular video game Minecraft to teach math, and its Adventures in Programming class covers 3D game design. Its most popular option, Minecraft Level Design & Engineering, applies STEAM concepts to building amazing contraptions inside Minecraft. With a total of 10 different classes to choose from, there is something for everyone at CodeREV.
Evan has been teaching STEAM for 17 years, has created education software, and has started education technology companies. Evan’s partner, Chief Education Innovation Officer John Stuppy, Ph.D., holds a Master’s degree in Education Technology from Stanford and a Ph.D. in Education Reform from UCLA, and has been teaching and creating curriculum for coding aligned with math for three decades. Evan and John believe that their combined 50 years of experience, coupled with the most innovative teaching approaches in technology, are critical to bringing coding into mainstream education and preparing students for their future by getting them excited about using math, logic, and science.
