FROM THE PUBLISHER VO L . 7, N O. 2 TM

A Decade Already?

I

t all started with a passion for our community. We didn’t know exactly what we were about to get ourselves into, but after months of napkin scratching (often accompanied by a glass of wine or two at one of our favorite local restaurants), the concept of ZCode Magazines was born – starting with the debut of 92127 Magazine. It’s hard to believe that the first issue was delivered to homes 10 years ago this month. To put it in perspective, our oldest daughter was in middle school (now she’s studying for her MBA in college), and our two youngest kiddos – now both in high school – were only four and five years old. Where has the time gone? The concept of our local zip code magazines was simple: publish magazines about the community that people want to read. And that simple concept is still our company mission statement to this very day. People are proud to live, work, and play in their communities, and we are excited to deliver magazines that showcase everything local. Over the past 10 years, we have published 561 issues. That’s more than 30,000 individual magazine pages that have been designed and printed! We’ve had the privilege to spotlight more than 500 families, more than 500 students, thousands of local businesses, and countless other interesting hyper-local stories. By creating bigger-than-life printed editorial features, people are proud to have their stories memorialized and often keep copies of “their” magazine on display for all to see. In fact, ZCode Magazines articles can be found framed and hanging on the walls of local businesses, showcased in the homes of local families, students, and volunteers, and prominently displayed in our local schools. Del Sol is your community, and Del Sol Magazine is your magazine. Be sure to stay in touch and recommend Derrick Breaux articles. And we love to receive photos! Also, take a moment to Publisher thank and support the local businesses that participate in this magazine. We wouldn’t be able to publish Del Sol Magazine without their enthusiastic support. It’s been a great decade! We look forward to serving our local communities for years to come. Thanks for being a reader and supporting Del Sol Magazine!

Regards, Derrick Breaux, Publisher

Learning Problems Don’t Have to be Permanent There are Real and Lasting Solutions

Having a learning challenge can be compared to doing a job at the top of a ladder, whose lower rungs are unstable. Working in this way makes the job harder, and take longer to complete. By strengthening the lower rungs, or underlying skills, learning challenges can be eliminated, and work done at the top of the ladder can improve, with increased attention, focus, confidence and success!

After working with TLC, our daughter does all her homework without prompting, needs very little help, and her grades are all A’s and B+. She seems happy and confident. Her work with TLC has been invaluable, and we are very thankful!” -TLC parent

“All of the staff is amazing-- caring, patient, & positive. My son's clinician challenged him without pushing him to frustration. A worthwhile investment in my child's future!” -TLC parent “TLC is nothing short of a miracle. I will admit I was initially hesitant. It is not cheap, and the promises of academic progress seem too good to be true. However, I am not being dramatic when I say it was worth every penny and it changed my son's academic life forever.” - TLC parent

T

eachers can really be catalysts for students, a fact that hasn’t been lost on Andy Achterkirchen. For 20 years, he’s been volunteering one night per week tutoring students, mostly in math – pre-calculus and calculus – but he’s also been known to work with kids in chemistry and physics. In 1999, he was tutoring at the Malcolm X Library when he learned about the Barrio Logan College Institute (BLCI), an organization breaking the cycle of poverty by preparing underserved students to be the first in their families to go to college. BLCI’s after-school programs begin in third grade and continue through high school. Andy had noticed through his library tutoring that most of his students had the ability to learn the subject matter, but their classroom instruction, for whatever reason, wasn’t enough. He transitioned his volunteer service to BLCI and has been there ever since. “It is very rewarding to see that students whom I have tutored have gone to university, graduated, and are now working as professionals,” Andy shared. Name: Karl Andrew “Andy” Achterkirchen A retired engineer, Andy Profession: Retired Engineer and Professional Volunteer worked in Los Angeles designing Community: Del Mar communication systems for Hobbies & Interests: Volunteering, traveling, fitness spacecraft, then continued in San Favorite Local When I go to lunch with friends near home, I often go Diego, managing 200 engineers Spots: to the West End Bar and Kitchen on Carmel Valley Rd. designing aircraft communication It has a great lunch menu and very pleasant ambiance systems. He also tutors at the UCSD Preuss School and serves on their Academic Advisory Committee, in addition to serving on the boards for Planned Parenthood and a health nonprofit in Tijuana since 2004. He also supports other organizations that help people in need in a variety of ways, including SAY San Diego, Home Start, ACLU, and Project Concern International. “Low levels of education are associated with crime, low civic engagement, and poor health outcomes,” Andy said. “Education is the answer. I encourage others to get involved in our education system either as a tutor or a mentor – whether it is our local schools or nonprofit organizations like BLCI – with your time, talent, or treasure to grant the supports needed to lift all the youth in our communities.” When he is not volunteering his time as a tutor, Andy enjoys traveling (he has been to about 50 countries, including a 15-month Know a volunteer that should be profiled in Del Sol Magazine? stint living in Australia for work) and fitness (he has a rowing machine, stationary bike, and a home gym which he uses daily).  Recommend a volunteer online at www.delsolmagazine.com.

Brain Balance Addresses Challenges with a Drug-Free, Integrative Approach by LIZ ONUFER | photos provided by Brain Balance

N

o single factor can point to a child’s success or, for that matter, their struggle. Raising children requires a holistic approach. So when kids are struggling – behaviorally, socially, academically – figuring out the underlying causes and pairing that with the right support can be a real challenge. Brain Balance of San Diego offers a drug-free, personalized, integrative approach to help children reach their full potential. “Gaps and holes in development result in gaps and holes in behavior, academics, socialization, and confidence,” owner Jon Pak explained. Using extensive brain research, Brain Balance creates individualized plans to strengthen the brain’s weaker areas, including sensory engagement, core muscle

strength and coordination, eye tracking, auditory processing, academic guidance, and nutritional guidance. “Extensive scientific research demonstrates that the brain is malleable,” Jon said. “Brain Balance has applied this research to develop a program that focuses on improving the foundation of development and brain connectivity rather than masking or coping with symptoms.” Those symptoms can range from lack of focus and meltdowns to lack of confidence and social struggles. They work with children with or without a diagnosis from pre-K to 12th grade who struggle behaviorally, socially, and academically. This includes but is not limited to lack of focus, impulsiveness, tantrums, learning challenges, lack of confidence, and challenging family/social relationships as well as with children diagnosed with ADHD, dyslexia, processing disorders, Asperger syndrome, high functioning autism (now considered a part of Autism Spectrum Disorder), and others. Jon was inspired to open Brain Balance of San Diego from his own experience. As a father of a child with special needs, Jon witnessed his son’s friends being treated with medication and struggling with the side effects without improvement. Jon opened the doors of Brain Balance to help families who did not know of options other than medication. The program is currently in 31 states and has served over 30,000 children. “Many of our center owners are parents of the children we’ve helped,” Jon shared. “They have personally experienced how Brain Balance has helped their children and wanted to provide that same opportunity to other parents.” Through a personalized combination of in-center sessions, at-home activities, and a nutrition program, the Brain Balance program addresses the individual gaps for each child to improve focus, behavior, social skills, sensory processing, and academics. The true testament to its success comes from the parents. Making friends, focusing in class, and improving self-esteem are only a few of the many successes that Brain Balance of San Diego hopes to share with other struggling children and their family. Jon acknowledged, “If you and your child are struggling and nothing has worked for you, there’s hope.” 

Sport, Service, and Scholarship LOCAL FOUNDATION CELEBRATES 25TH ANNIVERSARY photos courtesy of Pro Kids | The First Tee of San Diego

P

ro Kids | The First Tee of San Diego hosted their 2019 celebration gala at the Fairmont Grand Del Mar in September, the foundation’s most successful fundraising event in its 25-year history. Over 550 guests attended, with golf legend and San Diego native Phil Mickelson and Callaway Golf President and CEO Chip Brewer, among others, serving as guest speakers for the evening’s festivities. Phil and Amy Mickelson served as this year’s honorees for their contributions to the organization, and Sept. 7 was proclaimed “Pro Kids | The First Tee of San Diego Day” in San Diego. Pro Kids | The First Tee of San Diego serves children across San Diego County with primary program locations in Oceanside and City Heights – two communities affected by poverty, gang violence, and poor

high school graduation rates. Since its inception in 1994, the foundation has used the game of golf to engage kids in positive behaviors outside of school, helping them develop the character they need to be successful. COMMUNITY STUFF

35th Annual Coastal Cleanup Day I Love A Clean San Diego (ILACSD) hosted its 35th Annual Coastal Cleanup Day at 107 sites throughout San Diego County in September, including Powerhouse Park and San Dieguito Lagoon in Del Mar and Fletcher Cove in Solana Beach. More than 6,500 volunteers cleared nearly 145,000 pounds of waste and debris from streets, canyons, parks, and the coastline, as well as completing restoration projects such as painting, graffiti removal, non-native vegetation removal, mulching, trail restoration, and weeding. For the 35th year in a row, plastic remains the chief polluter collected throughout the county, and cigarette butts remain the most littered individual item. Some notable odd items collected included a reclining chair, refrigerator, wheelchair, plastic Christmas tree, messages in a bottle, rice cooker, restaurant pager, and a guitar case. Coastal Cleanup Day is one of two annual countywide cleanups hosted by ILACSD; the Creek to Bay cleanup will be held on April 25, 2020. Learn more about how to get involved at www.ilacsd.org.

Del Mar Hills Academy Honored Del Mar Hills Academy was among 30 schools in California recently recognized as National Blue Ribbon Schools by the U.S. Department of Education. The program recognizes public and private elementary, middle, and high schools based on their overall academic excellence or their progress in closing achievement gaps among student subgroups. Only 312 public and 50 non-public schools across the country were chosen for the distinction this year, with just three from San Diego County, including Carlsbad Unified School District’s Aviara Oaks Elementary School and San Diego Unified School District’s Torrey Pines Elementary School. “This recognition is well-deserved, and special thanks go to the educators and the school communities that meet students’ unique needs in order for all of their students to reach their full potential,” said State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond. Now in its 37th year, the National Blue Ribbon Schools Program has recognized more than 9,000 schools. The 2019 recipients will be honored during a special awards ceremony in Washington, D.C. in November.

Solana Beach Schools Receive Garden Grants

The Sage Garden Project, in partnership with the Sprouts Healthy Communities Foundation, selected Solana Vista and Skyline Elementary Schools to receive a $6,000 grant each for gardening and nutrition education and supplies for the 2019-20 school year. The schools have been supported continuously since 2013 since the foundation’s namesake, Sage, attended both schools as a child. Sage Garden Project also supports its pilot program at Ocean Knoll Elementary in Encinitas, and a total of 62 schools throughout the state. “Sage Garden Project provides a unique curriculum, teacher training, and salary support for hands-on educational experiences that positively impact children in their most formative years,” said Sage Garden Project founder and benefactor Annie Dunne. “Kids will eat anything they grow and cook – and eating more vegetables is a proven recipe for increased health. Exposure with delight is the magic of our program!” Sage Garden Project has awarded over $600,000 this year, of which about $100,000 was underwritten by the Sprouts Healthy Communities Foundation. Local Foundation Funds Elder Care Program The nonprofit Gary and Mary West PACE (Program of All-inclusive Care for the Elderly) recently opened its doors in San Marcos, made possible by a grant from the Solana Beach-based Gary and Mary West Foundation. The new program center is part of an innovative, nationwide model of care for vulnerable seniors with chronic care needs. As one of just 15 PACE programs operating in California, the Gary and Mary West PACE provides a wide range of services including: adult day programs; medical care; social activities; dentistry; meals; home care; physical, occupational, and speech therapy; and long-term support services to eligible seniors, as well as caregiver training and support groups for their families. “Our goal, privilege, and responsibility is to help low-income seniors live as independently as possible for as long as possible in their own homes,” said Shelley Lyford, President and CEO of the Gary and Mary West Foundation. For more information visit www.westpace.org and www.westhealth.org.

The sixth annual Solana Beach Sunset 5K Fun Run/Walk and Wellness Expo drew more than 500 runners, walkers, teams, and sponsors to Fletcher Cove Park for a day of fun activities for all ages, including stretching with Stretch Lab, food from Urban Remedy, healthy tips from Aetna and Fitwall, kids zone games with the Skinny Gene Project, superhero costume contest, live music, and more. The event, hosted by Champions for Health, raised over $50,000 benefiting community wellness and diabetes prevention programs. Champions for Health’s community wellness programs address preventable and chronic diseases through immunizations, screenings, the Live Well San Diego Speaker’s Bureau, and diabetes prevention education including personalized coaching, weekly group meetings, physical activities, and nutritional counseling. This year alone, over 500 volunteer physicians and health care professionals provided 25,000 blood pressure screenings at 200 locations, more than 100 healthy living presentations, and 4,200 free vaccinations to people in need. for learning, scoring the goal, acquiring a leadership role, forging new friendships, or applying to college,” said Major General Arthur Bartell, ANA President. Leadership is a cornerstone of the Army and Navy Academy experience. Military programs foster camaraderie, a sense of belonging, and many opportunities for service and leadership. Though less than one percent of ANA graduates enter military service, 100 percent of Cadets continue their personal journey prepared for future leadership roles, complimented by a strong sense of independence, responsibility, and moral and ethical values. The core curriculum at ANA is based on the University of California’s entrance requirements, and the college preparatory curriculum includes Advanced Placement and honors courses. Furthermore, ANA operates as a Gurian Model school, utilizing instructional techniques tailored specifically to how boys’ brains work, learn, and become motivated to reach their full potential. Students are also offered exciting electives such as aviation and computer science, visual and performing arts opportunities, a robust athletics program, a variety of clubs, and supervised weekend trips. Perhaps the brightest highlight of the Academy’s activities is the privately lifeguarded beachfront along the west edge of the Carlsbad campus, where students are encouraged to take advantage of aquatic activities. All students are taught to put ANA’s core values of honor, respect, responsibility, integrity, compassion, and gratitude into action every day. “It is our goal to ensure that Cadets find their voices and uncover their personalities before going out into the world where they will have to endure and overcome all the obstacles that life presents,” said President Bartell. “We encourage Cadets to test themselves, push beyond their comfort zones, and prove that they can be everything they aspire to be.” 

alk into a classroom at Pacific Ridge School, and you will experience something different – a class that is coming alive with student engagement, critical thinking, and faculty commitment. Here, students convene around a table with their teacher rather than sitting in rows of desks. They engage through listening, asking questions, and learning from their peers and teacher rather than a lecture. “The Harkness teaching method fosters the development of critical thinking skills and provides a supportive academic forum in which students can express their ideas,” explained Dr. Bob Ogle, Head of School. Welcome to Pacific Ridge School, an independent private school serving students from 7th to 12th grade. The school opened its doors in 2007 with a mission to nurture both the minds and hearts of students. To meet this goal, the educational model marries academic excellence with civic responsibility and global engagement. A cornerstone of the Pacific Ridge experience is the global education component, where every academic year culminates in a class or small group trip. “Global issues are woven throughout the curriculum and the last two weeks of the school year are reserved for our travel education program,” Dr. Ogle shared. “These travel courses are themed for different kinds of experiences – cultural exploration,

language immersion, service, academic study, or a combination.” From studying U.S. government in Washington, D.C. to ancient and modern cultures in China, Pacific Ridge students have traveled across the U.S. and to 58 countries. Last year, 11th and 12th graders studied, explored, and engaged with local residents in Kenya, Colombia, Vietnam, Iceland, Italy, Vienna and Prague, South Africa, the Galapagos Islands, and Austin, TX. The daily engagement and global interactions are led by a group of passionate faculty members. Teachers are also coaches, service learning and club advisors, and trip leaders. Their varied interactions with students create a bond beyond academic learning. “Due to these roles and the relationship building that takes place in a Harkness classroom, our teachers build multi-faceted relationships with students, fostering trust and mentorship,” Dr. Ogle noted. Interactions around the classroom table and around the world set Pacific Ridge graduates apart from their peers. “Our graduates are articulate, thoughtful, compassionate, and extremely prepared to take advantage of all college has to offer,” said Dr. Ogle. “They are globally aware, comfortable in many different environments, and receptive to learning from diverse perspectives.” 

THE GRAUER SCHOOL

S

ituated on a six-acre natural paradise in Encinitas, alive with native plants and animals and a light coastal breeze, The Grauer School campus itself serves as the starting point for its expeditionary learning tradition. Students are encouraged to use the school campus and the world around them, from the nearby San Elijo Lagoon to Kenya, as primary resources for generating curiosity and experiencing authentic learning. Founded in 1991, Grauer focuses on helping students develop their unique voice, discover their passions, and take ownership over their own learning. The school’s founder, Dr. Stuart Grauer, noted, “We have traveled far and wide studying the world’s most inspirational schools and educational movements: Montessori, Waldorf, Reggio Emilia, Socratic, free and democratic schooling, expeditionary learning and classical education, from one-room schoolhouses to Peking University. These traditions have provided us with heroes, mentors, and wisdom.” “The Grauer School uses the foundations of these great traditions and movements to infuse all we keep learning and synthesizing,” said Grauer Principal Dana Abplanalp-Diggs. “The result is a campus of purpose, optimism, and inspiration. We commit to continuing to develop the finest, most engaged, humanitarian independent

school in the world. And even though our focus is not on rankings and test scores, our students are succeeding at their top choice colleges.” Engaging students in six core values – resourcefulness, intellectual curiosity, perseverance, compassion, self-advocacy, and accountability – The Grauer School aims to develop well-rounded students who are purposeful, confident global citizens. The learning curriculum involves field trips, community service activities, art, expeditions, and student-created programs. Grauer is also the region’s only UNESCO affiliate school, with 176 partner schools around the world. Grauer’s expeditionary learning and arts programs are across the curriculum. The school also launched its Environmental Stewardship Pledge this year, dedicating the 2019-2020 school year to promoting ecological sustainability and stewardship in the school community and beyond. The resolution impacts every aspect of the school, from in- and out-ofclass curriculum to school culture and finance. “We know our students are not inheriting the world or climate we inherited,” said Grauer. “We have a moral imperative to prepare them courageously.” As the longest-serving independent school in North County San Diego, The Grauer School fosters nurturing relationships between teachers and students, giving learners 99th percentile levels of connection and engagement so that they are empowered in their education. “In a world that often seems to put standards before personal development, and to put institutional needs above human needs, Grauer keeps the focus on the individual student,” said Abplanalp-Diggs. “Our students achieve and are valued because they are developing personal passions, and teens coming of age are finding their unique voices at Grauer.” 

F

rom the border to Oceanside, The Bishop’s School brings together a diverse and thriving student and faculty population. The School was founded in 1909 as a girls’ boarding school when sisters Ellen Browning Scripps and Eliza Virginia Scripps joined Bishop Joseph Horsfall Johnson to create an institution committed to an ideal that still holds true today: School should be an “open door to knowledge.” In 1971, the School merged with the San Miguel School for Boys. Today, Bishop’s serves 800 students in grades 6 through 12. San Diego’s only independent middle and high school affiliated with the Episcopal Church, Bishop’s is an inclusive community where students come from more than 70 schools representing diverse religious, cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds. This school year, 49 percent of students self-identify as people of color and 20 percent receive more than $3 million in financial aid. Chaplain Nicole Simopoulos-Pigato said, “We emphasize compassion for all people, respect for the dignity of every human being, and the calls to love our neighbors as ourselves and to strive for justice and peace in the world.” Bishop’s programs are designed to meet students’ individual needs – both academically and emotionally, as student well-being is the top priority. Academic options, levels and paths are offered to best fit every student’s abilities, interests and potential, ensuring readiness and success in college and beyond. Opportunities extend beyond the classroom, including academic competitions, international travel, a peer support group, affinity groups, guest speakers and a community service program, to name a few. There are 72 different sports teams, 40 performing arts shows per year in dance, theater, and choral and instrumental music, and visual arts possibilities from photography to animation and more. Learning, leading and acting with open hearts and minds, Bishop’s students engage in the classroom, the community, and the world. 

he Beach & Country Guild’s 50th Annual Dia del Sol, held at the Fairmont Grand Del Mar in October, was a wild success. Attendees enjoyed a gourmet luncheon, silent and live auctions, and a designer fashion show. Former NFL player and philanthropist Rolf Benirschke was the guest speaker, and award-winning news anchor Kimberly Hunt served as the mistress of ceremonies. The sold-out event raised $255,000 for Beach & Country Guild’s sole beneficiary, United Cerebral Palsy of San Diego County. All funds stay in San Diego to provide services, programs, and facilities to those with cerebral palsy and other disabilities. Learn more at www.beachandcountry.org. 

HIDDEN TREASURES Encounter Life Under the Sea in Local Tide Pools by SAMANTHA EDWARDS

T

rips to the beach may have dwindled since the summer season ended, but winter is perfect for discovering some hidden gems along the shore. November through March is the best time to see tide pools in San Diego, when low and negative tides occur during daylight hours, exposing a whole new world of sea life. Exploring tide pools gives the whole family a close-up look at wildlife including sea snails, crabs, fish, barnacles, anemones, limpets, sea urchins, mussels, octopi, sea cucumbers, and even starfish and lobsters.

CHECK OUT THESE SPOTS FOR A TIDE POOLING ADVENTURE: CABRILLO NATIONAL MONUMENT

SWAMI’S STATE BEACH

Some of the best-protected tide pools in San Diego can be found below the sandstone cliffs in this national park.

Though generally known for its surf break, Swami’s is also home to a substantial reef formation.

DIKE ROCK, LA JOLLA

BIRCH AQUARIUM AT SCRIPPS

Tide pools can be found just north of the Scripps Pier and La Jolla Shores Beach, in a volcanic rocky area located on University of California, San Diego property.

In addition to its interactive Preuss Tide Pool Plaza at the aquarium, Birch also offers guided tide pool adventures on the beaches below. 

CARDIFF STATE BEACH The rocks here are 45 million years old and even contain embedded clam fossils – something you won’t likely see at any other local tide pools.

32 • DELSOLMAGAZINE.COM • November | December 2019

TIPS: • Check a tide table online to determine the best time of the day to visit. • Wear closed-toe shoes with a firm grip. Rocks can get slippery when wet. • Tide pools are home to delicate ecosystems. Never remove an animal or plant from its habitat. • Wear reef-safe sunscreen and clothes you don’t mind getting wet.
