It’s Not Just a Jeep!
P U B L I S HE R
Derrick Breaux
I
’ve always loved the idea of buying an old Jeep and refurbishing it. Once, I even convinced my wife to ride with me to check out a few. After seeing them, she eventually talked some sense into me and made me realize a project of that caliber was not in our family’s best interest. Fast forward many years. Apparently, my son – soon to be getting his driver’s permit – inherited the Jeep bug. There’s no doubt that he would have preferred a brandnew Jeep, but once I let him know what new Jeeps cost, he quickly changed his mind. So, we developed a plan. We would find a used Jeep that we could refurbish together as a father-son project. The search became a near obsession. On a daily basis, my son would slide his phone in front of my face asking what about this one? For a variety of reasons, my answer was always the same – not that one. Then, about a year ago, he showed me a Jeep. It wasn’t pretty. At 29 years old, it had clearly lived a long and “fun” life. It had scrapes, dents, some rust, and a very rough interior. But it had something that caught our attention – a brand new engine and new tires! As a family, we drove down to take a look at it. I strategically requested that my wife test drive it, with our son in the passenger seat. That’s all it took! We became the proud owners of a 1989 Jeep Wrangler. My son and I slowly and meticulously began to refurbish it. We did as close to a frame-off restoration as our budget allowed. We spent many days and nights working on the Jeep. Our goal was to have every part of the Jeep that you can see look as it did when it was driven off the factory floor 30 years ago. Along the journey, my son and I spent a lot of quality time together. We laughed. We got our hands dirty. We banged up our knuckles, figured out ways to remove and replace parts that didn’t want to be removed, and definitely shared moments of frustration. And yes, there was lots of physical exhaustion and sweat! There’s no longer a tool in my toolbox that I wouldn’t trust my son to use. This project allowed my son and me to bond beyond the normal busy lives that we all know. We took turns listening to each other’s music playlist. We talked about things that would typically require a “scheduled” conversation. We worked together on a common goal, without immediate gratification. I am so thankful for the opportunity this Jeep gave us. While the obvious outcome is a 1989 Jeep Wrangler that looks better today than it did 30 years ago, it’s not just a Jeep. It’s memories. It’s pride. It’s driving something down the road that you worked on with your own hands. We will remember and talk about this project for the rest of our lives. Learning Problems Don’t Have to be Permanent There are Real and Lasting Solutions
Having a learning challenge can be compared to doing a job at the top of a ladder, whose lower rungs are unstable. Working in this way makes the job harder, and take longer to complete. By strengthening the lower rungs, or underlying skills, learning challenges can be eliminated, and work done at the top of the ladder can improve, with increased attention, focus, confidence and success!
“
After working with TLC, our daughter does all her homework without prompting, needs very little help, and her grades are all A’s and B+. She seems happy and confident. Her work with TLC has been invaluable, and we are very thankful!” -TLC parent
“All of the staff is amazing-- caring, patient, & positive. My son's clinician challenged him without pushing him to frustration. A worthwhile investment in my child's future!” -TLC parent “TLC is nothing short of a miracle. I will admit I was initially hesitant. It is not cheap, and the promises of academic progress seem too good to be true. However, I am not being dramatic when I say it was worth every penny and it changed my son's academic life forever.” - TLC parent

A
fter moving to Del Mar in 2009, both Jim and Jane Lea Smith became enamored with the beautiful local nature trails throughout the area. While on hikes led by volunteers with the San Dieguito River Valley Conservancy (SDRVC), Jim was inspired to join up and lead his own hikes throughout Crest Canyon, the San Dieguito Lagoon, and Lake Hodges. Jim eventually became a SDRVC Board member, and both he and his wife also act as co-administrators for SDRVC’s Exploring Our Sense of Place (ESP) program. Describing the ESP program in more detail, Jane Lea proclaimed, “It is a popular educational, social, hiking program in which participants explore the watershed through a series of Saturday excursions from October through May. We start at the Volcan Mountain headwaters and wind up at the San Dieguito Lagoon. The program is limited to 25 participants, or ‘Explorers,’ but we encourage alumni to participate as volunteers.” Jim added, “Each excursion starts with a light breakfast and social gathering, followed by an expert presentation on a topic related to the area. The expert then leads the group on an informative hike. Our ESP experts are well-known in their field and cover a range of topics, including local birds, native plants and wildflowers, Native Americans,

geology, archaeology, and the ongoing San Dieguito Lagoon restoration.” In addition to his ESP tasks, Jim is a member of the Acquisitions and Trails committee, which helps acquire land in the watershed to ultimately close the gaps in the Coast to Crest Trail. He also leads volunteers in removing invasive species in the Crest Canyon on the fourth Saturday of the month, and maintains trails around the lagoon/ Dust Devil Park area through the Dust Devil volunteer group. As for Jane Lea, she helps out as much as she can at Canyon Crest Academy, the high school the couple’s 14-year-old daughter, Emma, attends. Asked what they love most about volunteering for local nature walk-related causes, Jim exclaimed, “We feel good about engaging in activities that support the health of our environment.” Jane Lea added, “We are committed to appreciating the beauty and natural diversity that San Diego has to offer. We especially appreciate that we can work closely together on a shared passion, meet new people, and always learn something new!”

DMSB Rotary Assists Homeless Vets
Twenty-six Del Mar-Solana Beach (DMSB) Rotarians, spouses, and friends operated the Water Tent at Stand Down San Diego for the 12th year in a row, handing out over 5,700 chilled water bottles to homeless veterans, their dependents, and volunteers over the three-day event. Funding for the water was donated by the DMSB Rotary Club. Started in 1988 by the Veterans Village of San Diego, Stand Down is an annual support and intervention event specifically for homeless veterans. Civilian volunteers and active duty military personnel help provide meals and coffee, picture IDs, clothing, showers, haircuts, sleeping tents for rest and relaxation, and stations for medical, dental, and vision assistance. Veterans are also offered help through the homeless court, counseling, chaplain services, 12-step meetings, and information about veteran benefits, employment, job counseling services, recovery providers, and shelters. Learn more about service opportunities through the DMSB Rotary Club at www.dmsbrotary.com.
Nonprofits Receive RSF Garden Club Grants
DMUSD Partners with The Super Dentists Del Mar Union School District (DMUSD) has teamed up with The Super Dentists to teach families about a California law requiring children entering kindergarten to receive a dental screening before they start school. “Cavities indicate a bacterial imbalance, which can be a sign of serious health issues,” said Dr. Kami Hoss, Co-founder and CEO of The Super Dentists. “Poor oral health can impact a child’s oral and facial growth and development, confidence and psychological health, and long-term physical health and even longevity.” DMUSD welcomes 750 to 1,000 new families each year, many of which are new to California and the dental screening law. The Super Dentists hope to educate local families about the importance of good oral health and help them comply with the law. “The Super Dentists is only the sixth corporate entity the district has chosen to officially partner with, because of their longtime commitment to San Diego,” said DMUSD Assistant Superintendent Jason Romero. Nature Collective received $5,000 to support habitat restoration with native plants at Harbaugh Seaside Trails. The grants helped fund initiatives that further the mission of each organization. Projects were required to address a community need; be technically and economically feasible; ensure that all those actively involved in the project will benefit from the results; facilitate the transfer of technology, skills, and knowledge to others; and foster self-sufficiency. North County recipients included: TERI ($11,257); RSF Association Forest Health and Preservation Committee ($10,000); MiraCosta College ($9,500); Carmel Creek Elementary School ($7,500); Coastal Roots Farm ($6,561); Mission Estancia Elementary School ($2,136); and Roger Rowe School ($2,206). Other recipients included San Pasqual Academy, Hancock Elementary School, Balboa Park Conservatory, Darnall Charter School, and Children’s Discovery Museum. Learn more at www.rsfgardenclub.org.

There are many skaters in Solana Beach, so the motivation for the city was to provide a venue for them to recreate and have fun. This venue also provides a place for the youth in the community to gather with friends and get outside and play. The skate park was designed by SITE Design Group and Van Dyke Landscape Architects, with input from the community and local skateboarders during several community workshops.
WHEN DID IT OPEN? It opened on April 27, 2019.
WHAT ARE SOME FEATURES AT THE PARK AVAILABLE TO SKATERS? SITE Design Group designed a park with plenty of features for the progression and enjoyment of all rider levels from beginners, intermediate, and advanced.
The skate park includes two entrances, one from Stevens Ave. and one from within the park itself at the lower grass area. Skate features include several banks with level changes from 6” to 24” at seven different locations. Quarter pipes were incorporated at both ends of the park to allow riders to do tricks at and return back into the park to keep constant flow. Quarter pipes range from 36” to 38”, 42”, and 48”. In the center of the park you’ll find a four-sided china bank, all four sides at different heights to add variety for skill level and trick opportunities. We also have a 3 stair against the china bank with a round rail and another 3 stair against the sculptural rolled lay back bank, also

with a round rail. Between those two stair sets sits a bank with a rectangular rail. On the north side you have a 4 stair set with double hubba ledges with opportunity to ride them on either side, on the stair side, or the bank side. Throughout the park we also have gaps to jump over, a drainage tunnel to ride over, a pole jam, and a banked hip. The skate park is enclosed with perimeter safety railing on two sides and a beautiful artistic sound wall to the north to help keep skateboarding noise down and enhance the aesthetics that well represents the City of Solana Beach.
HOW WAS/IS THE PARK FUNDED? City funds, a San Diego County Neighborhood Enhancement grant, and donations.
WHAT ARE YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES AS THE CITY OF SOLANA BEACH PARKS AND RECREATION MANAGER AS IT PERTAINS TO THE SKATE PARK? Promote the facility, work with the Public Works Dept. to maintain the facility, encourage safety and fun.
WHAT DO YOU MOST ENJOY ABOUT YOUR ROLE? WHAT ARE SOME CHALLENGES YOU FACE? I enjoy seeing the facility highly used by the public. This new asset (along with the new basketball court) has really brought a new energy to the park. The community is enjoying it and more people are coming out to recreate. My biggest challenge is encouraging skaters to use their safety equipment.
APPROXIMATELY HOW MANY SKATERS VISIT THE PARK IN A GIVEN WEEK OR MONTH? We do not count, but I estimate 1,000 per week (4,000 in a month).
ARE THERE FEES TO USE THE PARK? No.
WHAT ARE SOME OF THE MOST IMPORTANT RULES/ GUIDELINES SKATERS SHOULD BE AWARE OF WHEN USING THE PARK? The park is open every day from 7 a.m. to dusk and is closed when wet. Safety equipment must be worn. Children 12 years or under must be with a parent. Skate at your own risk and be respectful of others.
WHY IS THE SKATE PARK AN ASSET TO THE COMMUNITY? It brings community members together by providing a venue to bring their children, exercise, and have fun through skateboarding.
WHAT’S IN STORE FOR THE FUTURE OF THE PARK? FUTURE GOALS, ACTIVITIES, ETC.? An annual community event to celebrate skateboarding and our skate park.
IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE YOU WOULD LIKE TO ADD? Parks make life better!

LOCAL GIRL SCOUT HONORED FOR GOLD AWARD 5/15/2019
Emma Richards Mith.jpg
E
mma Richards-Smith of Solana Beach has earned the Girl Scout Gold Award, the organization’s highest honor awarded to Girls Scouts for demonstrating extraordinary leadership by creating sustainable solutions that address society’s greatest challenges. For her Gold Award project, Emma developed a sports injury prevention program for student athletes. During her freshman year of high school, Emma had to take a year off from sports due to a severe, but preventable, injury. The experience inspired her to educate athletes ages 11 and up on how to prevent sports-related injuries like muscle pulls, strains, and tears. Through workshops and a pamphlet, she shared techniques such as stretching, foam rolling, nutrition, body-weight strengthening, and overall body care. Her school’s rugby, lacrosse, and badminton teams incorporated the practices, resulting in athletes feeling less sore and having fewer injuries.
Emma graduated this year as an AP scholar with distinction from Torrey Pines High School, where she was a four-sport varsity athlete and an All-Academic Athlete. She was accepted into the United States Military Academy at West Point. Emma plans to study engineering at the academy, then branch into engineering as an army officer. She aspires to later pursue a law degree and become a patent lawyer. Emma was among 61 Gold Award winners honored during a recent ceremony at the Hilton La Jolla Torrey Pines. “Gold Award Girl Scouts change the world for the better, and change it for good!” said Girl Scouts San Diego CEO Carol M. Dedrich. “Our 2019 honorees embody everything this achievement stands for.” For information on Girl Scouting opportunities contact Tracy Browns at tbrowns@sdgirlscouts.org, or visit sdgirlscouts.org.

HIKING SAN DIEGO Explore New Hiking Trails in North County by SAMANTHA EDWARDS
W
ith temperature highs hovering comfortably in the 70s, the fall months are the perfect time to get out and explore local hiking trails. North County has something for everyone, from relaxed walking paths to challenging hills. So lace up your hiking boots and enjoy the view!
LOS PEÑASQUITOS CANYON PRESERVE
COAST TO CREST TRAIL
With relatively flat trail routes, a hike through the Los Peñasquitos Canyon Preserve is great for all ages and skill levels. You’re sure to see much of the canyon’s wide variety of flora and fauna, as well as creeks, streams, and a waterfall cascading through volcanic rock. www.penasquitos.org
With about 48 miles of the planned 71 total miles completed, this trail extends from the ocean in Del Mar to the Volcan Mountain near Julian and contains eight sections with many smaller trails of varying intensity. www.sdrp.org
TORREY PINES STATE NATURAL RESERVE The main reserve area has six different trails hugging the coastline with sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean and acres of rare Torrey pine trees, making Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve a must on a sunny day. www.torreypine.org
DOUBLE PEAK Starting at Discovery Lake Park in San Marcos, this moderate five-mile loop trail offers panoramic views of North County at the summit. Much of the brush along the trail was burned by fires, so there is little shade on this route. www.san-marcos.net

DO:
BLACK MOUNTAIN While Black Mountain Open Space Park contains many chaparral and sage-lined hiking trails, Black Mountain itself is only accessible by two trailheads. It’s a moderate hike to the summit, which provides 360-degree views of the surrounding area, even out to the ocean on clear days. www.sandiego.gov
IRON MOUNTAIN This popular six-mile round trip hike is moderately difficult, with a clearly marked trailhead and boulder-lined trail leading to expansive views at the summit. www.poway.org
• Use sun protection • Bring water • Hike with a partner or group • Carry a cell phone in case of an emergency • Check the website for possible trail closures • Respect local habitats and stay on the trail
DON’T: • Pick flowers or plants • Feed wild animals • Litter • Vandalize rocks or trees
MOUNT WOODSON A photo op on the famed Potato Chip Rock awaits hikers at the peak of this strenuous eightmile round trip hike. This hike is recommended for experienced hikers only and should be started early in the day. www.poway.org
