Heading Back Home photo by DAWS PHOTOGRAPHY

I

often tell people about how I grew up in a small town in Texas. But the reality is that I only lived there until I was nine years old. I did move back for a couple of years when I was a young teenager, but that’s a story for a different pub note. The fact of the matter is that I’ve now lived in San Diego for more than half of my life. My family jumped around from city to city during my elementary and middle school years due to work obligations, but we eventually settled here in North County back in 1988. I am writing this note while aboard a flight heading back to my hometown outside of Houston. I will be visiting my grandmother in the hospital. For the past several months, she has been fighting the fight of her life - aggressively battling cancer. To say that my grandmother (we all know her as MawMaw) is a second mother to me would be an understatement - especially during the first nine years of my life when I lived only one block away from her. There was rarely a day that went by that I wasn’t at her house during those early years. Although my MawMaw has always been a major influence in my life (even from 1,600 miles away), she particularly impacted me while I was a kid in Texas. It’s hard to believe how vivid my memories are from that time period. Whether it was running across the field to her house when I was barely four years old or climbing up the tree in her backyard to pick plums so that she could make her famous homemade plum jelly, there was never a dull moment. She would take me fishing. We would often go crabbing on the bayou (something that I have not done since I was a kid). She even let me be her co-pilot while she watched her daytime soap operas - I knew the names of every character! We even delivered newspapers together - that’s also a story for another pub letter. I have carried many wonderful childhood memories with me dating back to my original nine years in this world. Some things seem like they happened yesterday. I often look at my own kids in fascination (ages 16, 9 and 8) and wonder what memories they will inevitably hold close to them as they grow into adulthood. Who will they

admire? Who will have influenced them? Who will they write about one day? There are very few people in this world that I respect as much as my MawMaw. Her passion for family, her ability to make you feel special, and her sincere desire to truly know and connect with people are just a few examples of the type of person that she is. Today I choose to clear my mind of all of the normal clutter. I will visit with my MawMaw. I will hug her. I will talk about childhood memories. I will remind her that I love her. I will thank her for being the beautiful person that she is. And with everything going on, one thing is for sure, she will still ask me how the kids are doing. She’ll ask me about their sports and school. She’ll ask me how things are going at the office - and she’ll genuinely anticipate the answers. That’s just the kind of person she is.

Many studies have shown that the money spent in local business stays in community. For every $100 spent at a locally-owned business, $45-$68 goes back into the community and our tax base.

Local Owners are Local Contributors

Local businesses give a greater amount of money into the local causes. Non-profits received more support from local business owners than they do from non-locally owned business. They also directly inject money into the local economy through payment of wages and benefits to local residents. More of your money is used to make purchases from other business and service providers thus strengthening the economic base of our community.

Now applying for official non-profit status, the organization shows no signs of slowing down, having collected over 140 pairs of eyeglasses and sunglasses during its first drive and expanding to include even more businesses in its efforts during a second drive in July. “Organizing and carrying out the drives wasn’t a problem with our base of dedicated volunteers,” Vice President of Finances Olav Underdal clarified, “It’s the need for money that’s the challenge.” Indeed, the cost of operating donation drives and the legal fees for applying for government recognition have been FYEO’s most persistent challenges, but such difficulties come with the territory when starting any kind of charity. While operating the donation drive had its share of speed bumps on the road to the glasses’ final destination in India, seeing the grateful smiles on

Austin and Isabel Shih Take a Stab at Competitive Fencing

S

ixteen-year-old Austin Shih’s interest in competitive fencing came about when his mom showed him a newspaper advertisement for a fencing class at a local club. “I thought the picture looked really cool and wanted to take a stab at it,” described Austin. He took the class and hasn’t put the sword down since. Today, Austin practices five to six times a week through open fencing and lessons at the San Diego Fencing Center. He is ranked #38 for his age group in the

nation and has placed first in multiple San Diego qualifiers. With major tournaments taking place all over the United States, Austin travels at least every other month and has visited many interesting places – his favorites being the cities of Atlanta and Dallas. “There was this Coca-Cola museum in Atlanta that had Coca-Cola brand sodas from all over the world,” exclaimed Austin. When Austin’s focus isn’t on fencing, he enjoys learning about science. He has been awarded medals in multiple Science Olympiad events at the regional and state level, such as Road Scholar, Shock Value and Anatomy.

Austin’s sister, Isabel, who is 12 years old became fascinated with fencing while watching her older brother practice the sport. “I decided that I wanted to fence too since I liked how it involved both strategy and athleticism,” said Isabel. Today, she practices fencing a minimum of 10 hours a week. “During a typical daily practice, we start with warm up routine then the class. We learn the various blade work, footwork and strategy and end the day with open fencing for an hour or until the club closes,” described Isabel. In addition to practice, she participates in fencing tournaments on the weekends. Aside from fencing, Isabel likes to play the violin and double bass in her school’s orchestra. Like her older brother, she “I decided that I wanted to fence too has a passion for the too since I liked how it involved sciences. Some awards both strategy and athleticism,” she has received include - Isabel Shih fifth place in the Sounds of Music category of Science Olympiad, first place in the 2013 South Coast Invitational RYC and second place individuals for the San Diego Scholastic League. Their mother, Iwen, acknowledges that between fencing and school, neither Austin nor Isabel have much free time on weekends or for social events. “But they also learn to be efficient at time management and prioritizing their tasks,” she noted. “We always let our teachers know and get any homework we will miss ahead of time,” stated Austin. “Sometimes I have to cram my work in, like when I do homework on airplanes or study at the hotel,” added Isabel. “It is hard but it is worthwhile of doing things that you love.” 

SDNCC “A CELEBRATION OF BUSINESS” T photos by Janis Foley

he San Diego North Chamber of Commerce (SDNCC) held the 2013 Annual Celebration of Business Awards Gala in late June at the Rancho Bernardo Inn. The event, hosted by comedian, Kim Coles of In Living Color and Living Single, was a true celebration of doing business successfully, responsibly and for the spirit of the community. The SDNCC staff and their interns did a fantastic job planning for the highly anticipated event, held at the Rancho Bernardo Inn. The purpose was to honor the best and brightest of San Diego County’s business community while highlighting achievements in corporate and individual categories. A variety of business achievement awards were presented in nine distinct categories to include: Non Profits of the Year: Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater San Diego and The Elizabeth Hospice Community Leader Small Business: Miguel’s Cocina Community Leader Medium Business: Sullivan Solar Power Community Leader Large Business: TERADATA Entrepreneur of the Year: Lauren Reynolds Woman in Business: Deanna Smith Small Business of the Year: Strategic Business Communications Business of the Year: San Diego County Credit Union Volunteer of the Year: Widney Hawthorne Business Leader of the Year: Derrick Breaux, ZCode Media Visionary Award: Bonnie Dumanis Environmental Stewardship: Harrah’s Rincon Casino & Resort Healthiest Large Business: Bridgepoint Education Healthiest Small Business: Bill Howe Plumbing

The evening was filled with anticipation of silent auction item bidding contests, a cocktail hour, board installation, dinner and the awards ceremony where applause was generously given as each recipient was honored. Derrick Breaux, Publisher of ZCode Media, was completely surprised and humbled by his award. Upon receiving the Business Leader of the Year award, Breaux shared his enthusiasm for having the opportunity to be so involved in the local communities. He also praised the team he has built and how ZCode Media has thrived from the very beginning because of their passion for “producing magazines that people love to read.” ZCode Media has grown to host 10 community magazines since the Premiere issue of 92127 Magazine in November of 2009; Del Sol Magazine as the newest addition. ¢

FAMILY-FOCUSED KID VENTURES REACHES OUT TO THE COMMUNITY by SUSAN SHEN

W

hat happens when a dash of Disneyland is mixed with a pinch of Starbucks? No, this is not a game of Alchemy; according to Debbie and Darren Solomon, the mix produces a boutique-style enrichment center combined with a parent café, collectively known as Kid Ventures. “We currently have three locations in San Diego, along with a mobile program we just launched that travels throughout the city doing community events, mobile parties and classes,” remarked Darren, pleased with the expanding and beneficial influence of their brainchild. Founders of this unique family experience, the Solomons have opened a new studio in 92127, specifically 4S Ranch, where they hope to continue their mission of providing an inspiring and comfortable environment for children. Each Kid Ventures studio is equipped with a “village” of kid-friendly locales, encouraging exploration in places such as a castle, pirate ship and rock-climbing wall. In addition, children will be able to exercise life-skills by engaging in imitative roles in places such as the Kid Ventures market, nursery and diner. The staff, some of them known as “edutainers”, provide entertaining and educational activities that further accentuate the theme of Kid Ventures and stimulate the creative and learning process. Parents looking for joint relaxation and enjoyment will be delighted by the opportunities offered by Kid Ventures. Each facility has a parent café installed near the play area where adults can enjoy a cup of coffee while surfing the internet and keeping an eye on their little ones. However, parents will most likely be greatly fulfilled in seeing their kids developing their motor and mental faculties, becoming stronger and smarter through all that Kids Ventures has to offer. The Solomons have high hopes for their new location, impressed by the congeniality shown by residents in 92127. “We have been so grateful to this community for welcoming us with open arms,” they shared. “Our neighboring businesses have brought flowers and come by to personally welcome us to the area.” Not only involved with their burgeoning business, Debbie and Darren are also dedicated to community service. They have worked with Rady Children’s Hospital and local foster organizations to further spread the goodwill they have manifested through opening Kid Ventures. “Giving back by helping children and families is our true passion in life,” explained the Solomons. And they certainly have shown that through Kid Ventures.¢

Determined Spirit After Two Heart Surgeries, Local Athlete Emily Harper-Guerra is Back in the Action by JENNIFER FRAKES | photos by Spark Photography

F

or those who follow Del Norte High School athletics, the name Emily HarperGuerra may sound familiar. She was awarded First Team All-League for both softball and water polo and received a softball scholarship to Saint Anselm College in New Hampshire. This 19-year-old athlete was also diagnosed with a virus that attacked her heart. This virus caused Emily to have lethal heart arrhythmia, something she had unknowingly suffered from for two years. “My premature ventricular contractions (PVC) symptoms mimicked being overheated or dehydrated. At times, I would feel lightheaded or dizzy after workouts. Sometimes my heart would race,” explained Emily. She had shared with her family and doctors what was happening, but her symptoms were inconsistent and doctors were unable to make a diagnosis. It wasn’t until Emily saw Dr. Gibson, a cardiac specialist from Poway, when she was home from college in December 2012 that she finally had an answer. Dr. Gibson performed two surgeries to correct Emily’s heart arrhythmia in her ventricular tachycardia area. After each surgery, Emily had to take it one step at a time, literally. “As each day went by, I improved and in a few weeks, I was back on my feet,” revealed Emily. She has now reached the point where she is swimming and working out with the girls’ softball team in 4S Ranch. In fact, Emily is currently the assistant coach for the Factory 10U travel team. In addition to getting back out on the field, Emily has reevaluated her dreams for the future. “I’ve always felt that I had some hidden talent with art and fashion. I am now attending the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising in San Diego with a major in visual communications. I can’t wait to see which part of the major brings out the best in me and highlights my talents,” exclaimed Emily. From coaches and former teammates to neighbors and fellow members of The Church at Rancho Bernardo, Emily and her family have been overwhelmed with well wishes and encouragement. “We feel that the whole community reached their arms around us and supported Emily through each step of her journey,” related Celia, Emily’s mother. And with Emily’s fighting spirit and commitment to give back the community through her involvement in girls’ softball and her determination to educate the athletic community about the symptoms of PVC, 92127 residents will continue to watch this young lady thrive. 

CATALYST FOR SUCCESS AT-A-GLANCE Full Name of Organization: Catalyst for Success Year of Establishment: 2012 Mission: Promoting STEM to young students Website: www.catalyst4success.org Facebook: www.facebook.com/CatalystForSuccess Upcoming Events: Training sessions with new chapters Non-profit ID #: EIN: 46-1136319, ID #: 31522

t all started with AP Chemistry, where Jason Ge’s teacher encouraged him to compete in the Chemistry Olympiad. In his first year competing, Jason became the only freshman finalist among 20 students at nationals. A year later, he advanced even further, joining the top four students in the nation as they comprised Team USA and took home the silver medal at the International Chemistry Olympiad. However, Jason, now an incoming senior at Westview High School, took home more than just the medal. “I witnessed a few experiments that a professor demonstrated during nationals and realized that using science to perform a show could have great potential for young kids,” explained Jason. Last summer, Jason began outlining his vision for a nonprofit organization – one that would make learning exciting to young students through science-based magic shows and hands-on activities. With this, in August 2012, Catalyst for Success was born. Since then, the organization has made

significant strides. After recruiting a few classmates who shared his passion for science, Jason began contacting elementary schools about bringing assemblies to the students. “At the beginning, one of the biggest struggles was that we did not have any credibility or name recognition.” Finally, in February, the principal of Sundance Elementary School, Bob Rodrigo, took a chance and let Catalyst for Success come perform a show. “It was a huge success and from then on, contacting schools was much easier,” shared Jason. As of today, Catalyst has reached over 11,000 students with 15 schools in the Poway, San Diego, Chula Vista, Del Mar and Oceanside Districts. Due to its great success, Catalyst also earned the support of an advisory board, comprising of Todd Cassen, the principal of Westview High School, Dr. John P. Collins, Poway Unified School District Superintendent and Dr. Marinda Wu, President of the American Chemical Society. But Jason doesn’t want to let the organization stop there. His next goal is to establish high school chapters of Catalyst and have them running at Westview, Del Norte and Rancho Bernardo high schools by the start of the school year. “Our ultimate goal is to promote STEM education to as many students as possible. I know that our program can be applicable to any high school that has students passionate about sharing science with kids.” Jason hopes that with these steps, “Catalyst will become a lasting program that continues to benefit our communities.” ¢

Driven The Zeller Family Puts Time, Energy and Focus into the Community by kathy loy | photos by Spark Photography

T

en years ago, the 4S Ranch community received a gift from the Westwood neighborhood of Rancho Bernardo. That gift came in the form of the Zeller family when they moved a few miles west into the Bel Etage neighborhood of 4S Ranch. The Zellers brought with them the energy, determination and means to impact the lives of many local athletes and families. The Zellers are an athletic foursome. Parents Dave and Mimi work out at a gym or outdoors most days of the week. Daughter Lora was a four year varsity soccer player at Rancho Bernardo High School and is currently at USC working to earn her doctorate in Education. Their son Patrick, a senior at Del Norte High School (DNHS) this year, plays varsity football during the season and works on conditioning year-round. Patrick explained, “I am looking forward to my fourth varsity football season at Del Norte being my best from both a team and personal standpoint, and hopefully earning a scholarship to play football at the college level. “

The Zellers have channeled their love of fitness into supporting programs at the high school. “We felt a special connection to the new Del Norte High School with our son attending, and wanted to help make a difference in the lives of the students who attend DNHS,” explained Mimi. In fact, the Zellers were recently honored with the Zeller Spirit of Giving Award at the DNHS golf tournament. “We are hopeful that our example of giving will be continued by others in “We felt a special connection to the the same spirit of giving as we intended,” said new Del Norte High School with Mimi. “Our participation our son attending, and wanted to spanned many areas and help make a difference in the lives involved contribution of of the students who attend DNHS.” time, financial donations, tangible items such - Mimi Zeller as memorabilia for fundraising, and behind the scenes work to provide items to those in need.” During their son’s tenure at the school, the Zellers have contributed an exhausting list of resources and time to the school. They helped build the athletic tutoring and Touchdown Club programs, sponsored Grad Night and Senior Awards Night, funded football equipment purchases, solicited donation from food and apparel suppliers, worked at and stocked the snack bar, and cooked meals for the JV and varsity football teams. Dave has even worked as the sideline coach and as a spotter for both teams. This family also believes in supporting the businesses that support the community. They routinely patronize places like Capri Blu, Jersey Mike's, Sport Clips, Sweet Things and Flippin’ Pizza because they support DNHS programs. When you see them around town, be sure to say hello. 

Ask Your 4S RANCH DENTIST Q: What is Clear Aligner Therapy and is it for me?

A:

An alternative to traditional braces, Clear Aligner Therapy is used to straighten your teeth. This is done using products such as Clear Correct or Invisalign, with a series of clear, removable Aligners, similar to whitening trays. A high-tech, 3-dimensional, computer-generated software program makes these unique custom Aligners move teeth in very precise increments.

There are many benefits to this treatment:

• Nearly invisible: You can straighten your teeth without anyone knowing. • Removable: You can eat and drink what you want. • Better oral hygiene: You can brush and floss normally to maintain healthy gums and teeth. • Comfortable: There are no wires, metal or brackets to cause mouth abrasion.

Dr. Jeremy Bold is a graduate of the USC

Like traditional braces, the length of treatment depends on the complexity of the case, usually lasting between 6 and 18 months. And typically, an insurance policy that covers traditional braces also will cover this treatment. So go ahead, lose the braces – Go wireless! A consultation will determine if you are a good candidate.

:::: community stuff Medical Rescue 30,000 Feet High

Dr. Deepak Asudani, a father of two residing in 92127, came to the aid of an unconscious passenger while on a flight home from a conference in National Harbor, MD. A man two rows in front of Dr. Asudani seemed to be taking a nap, but was soon found to be unresponsive to his family and the in-flight crew’s attempts to wake him up. Dr. Asudani sprang to action when the staff sought medical personnel aboard the aircraft. The passenger appeared to be suffering either an arrhythmia (an abnormal variation in heart conduction) or syncope (a sudden loss of consciousness). After performing deep sternal rubs and chest thumps, Dr. Asudani was able to revive the passenger. US Airways thanked Dr. Asudani with a heartfelt letter shortly thereafter. “Thankfully things turned out to be okay,” Dr. Asudani reflected, “It feels comforting to realize that the passenger did well.”

Senior Yoga Pioneer Retires

Frank Iszak, founder of Silver Age Yoga Community Outreach (SAYCO), recently retired as executive director of the 10-year-old organization on Aug. 15. In 2003, Frank and his wife Serpil gave their first free yoga class to low-income seniors at the Mira Mesa Senior Center in San Diego. Frank, who emigrated to the United States in 1957 as a political refugee from Hungary, considers SAYCO “his payment of debt to America, for the privilege of becoming part of this great society.” Now 82, he has decided to dedicate his time to a movie currently in production about his escape from Hungary and life in America. Amy Roost will take over Frank’s directorship at SAYCO. “While I’ve only know Frank Iszak a few short months, he already inspires me. I am honored to carry out his legacy of empowering seniors to live strong, healthy and independent lives. I look forward to expanding our offering of free yoga to more seniors throughout the region and eventually nationwide,” shared Amy. Frank and Serpil will be honored at an Oct. 10 celebration at the Powerhouse Community Center in Del Mar. The event is open to the public. For ticket information, contact the SAYCO offices at 858-693-3110.

Jackie reigned in the talent and scholastics categories at the competition and was named the California titleholder, earning her $18,250 in scholarship money. Jackie noted, “As the Distinguished Young Woman of California I plan to publicize the program to recruit more girls at local high schools and to also put together presentations to spread the program’s message of ‘Be Your Best Self’.” Congratulations, Jackie!

Dr. Moser’s Halloween Candy Buy-Back

From Friday, Nov. 1 through Tuesday, Nov. 5, Moser Orthodontics will hold a post-Halloween candy buy-back at their offices located at 14701 Via Bettona, Suite 205, San Diego, CA 92127 between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. Each day, Dr. Noel Moser will give cash for your candy, paying a dollar for each pound of candy surrendered with proceeds being donated to your child’s school. As California schools struggle with budget cut backs, Dr. Moser is offering schools a way to raise money and at the same time save students from excess sugar by giving them cash for their candy – in a time when fundraising is not just important, but for many schools imperative. The surrendered candy will be donated to the Military troops and the San Diego Rescue Mission. Last year Moser Orthodontics collected over 3,000 pounds of candy and over the five years, she has donated over $8,100 to local schools with this fundraiser alone.

Radiant Smiles Creatively Eliminates Dental Anxiety

When six-year-old Declan needed to see a dentist to have his tooth pulled, he didn’t expect to make a new friend in the process. When his mother contacted Dr. Douglas Lee at Radiant Smiles for the procedure, she warned him that Declan was nervous about the procedure. Declan was fearful of getting “shots” so his mother asked Dr. Lee strategies for how to prepare her son for the upcoming procedure. Dr. Lee and the staff at Radiant Smiles really wanted Declan to have a positive experience with dental procedures. Upon researching potential options, Dr. Lee found Julie Dubansky, owner of Certified Therapy Dogs that specialize in dental treatment. On the Saturday morning of the procedure, Declan was introduced to one of Julie’s therapy dogs, Olive, and Declan took charge. He walked Olive up and down the hallway and she was by his side throughout the entire dental procedure. Needless to say, it was a positive experience for Declan, his mother, Dr. Lee and his staff at Radiant Smiles, and, of course, Olive. Dr. Lee and his staff are committed to providing individualized service for all of their clients. They strive to think creatively to make your dental experience a positive one and invite you and your family to visit Radiant Smiles.

Girls Join Together Earning Scout Awards

Local Girl Scouts Elena (Troop 8343) and Amanda (Troop 8707) have found common ground as they work together on their respective Gold and Silver Awards. Amanda has selected to work on Ability Awareness and Inclusion, while Elena has elected to work towards creating advocacy in education for Latin American Children. The girls are gathering used wheelchairs for a program that refurbishes them and sends them to Latin America; moreover, they will be traveling at their own expense to Bolivia. During their trip, they will be fitting hearing aids at a school for the deaf in Cochabamba, Bolivia. As part of this, they will be holding a two-hour Inclusion workshop in November for all school-aged children. Trinity Barbera Fights Poverty

Trinity Barbera has decided to do something special with her time, something that can make a difference. She discovered Soles 4 Soles, an organization that provides shoes for the needy and poverty-stricken. After finding 40 pairs of unneeded shoes at her own home, Trinity decided that she would collect 300 pairs. “She started with an email to friends, a letter to businesses asking for their support and walking door-to-door asking if neighbors had any shoes they wouldn’t miss. The response showed its abundance in pairs,” said Trinity’s mom Angie. Those interesting in helping the cause are encouraged to drop off shoes at the collection box located at Scripps Mende Well Being Center, or by delivering them to Trinity in 4S Ranch. All shoes of any type or condition will be accepted. For more information contact Trinity at 858-361-7820.

ndre Kwan has worked in the lending industry since 2003. After years at a Fortune 500 company, he now works as Vice President of Mortgage Lending at Guaranteed Rate. “I have always had a passion for real estate and – combined with finance – it was a natural fit,” shared Andre. “Home finance always seems to provide me with new opportunities and challenges which I enjoy.” According to his clients, he is meeting those challenges head on and exceeding their expectations. ”I am still a little bit in awe of what just happened,” admitted former client Gloria D. After she and her husband were turned down by their local community bank and their own investment bank, Andre came through for them. “You were literally able to close in 11 days with a better rate than anyone else offered,” she continued. “I’m not sure how you did it, but [we] cannot count our blessings enough for all your help and getting this amazing home.” Andre credits his success to his staff. He and his team have received recognition for their work, earning five-star service awards from San Diego Magazine. With award-winning technology to support his customers as well, like transaction monitoring software, online loan applications, and countless web-based educational tools, Andre knows he is giving his clients every advantage. Guaranteed Rate’s strong relationship with lenders also puts Andre in a unique position to help his clients. “We are a multiple lending platform,” explained Andre, “meaning SPECIAL ADVERTISEMENT

we have several investors who provide best price/rate execution options vs. just having only one source like your typical bank or credit union which may have limitations.” Founded only about 10 years ago, Guaranteed Rate’s proven model has helped it grow at an incredible rate. Recognized as one of the most successful private companies in the U.S. for five years straight, Guaranteed Rate was also named a top private U.S. job creator and was included on the Fast Fifty list for six consecutive years. Andre shares that success by bringing his expertise to the community. Local Volleyball Programs Bring Opportunities to Girls of all Ages photos by Spark Photography

Volleyball

has become a year-round sport, on the indoor courts and the beach sands, and is catching the liking of girls and boys of all ages. It’s a sport that kids are learning at a young age and

can be played on a recreational, competitive and elite level. The season has begun on the high school level and the local girls participating couldn’t be more prepared. Del Norte High School Head Coach, Nathan Rendon and Rancho Bernardo High School Head Coach, Andrea Sienko weigh in on the outlook for their teams, opportunities for girls of all ages and the physicality of the sport. Whether a girl is just starting out as early as third grade or a veteran on the court being watched

by college scouts, the sport brings camaraderie, self-esteem, athleticism and a lot of fun for all involved.

In 1895 an instructor at the Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA) by the name of William Morgan decided to blend elements of basketball, baseball, tennis and handball to create a game for his classes that would demand less physical contact than basketball. The “Y” took this new game around the world and introduced a uniquely American sport to many foreign lands. In 1916, the Philippines made its own contribution to volleyball by introducing an element of offense that would forever change the game. A receiving player would pass a ball in a high trajectory that would then be struck by another player. The set and spike were born. There are more than 46 million Americans who play volleyball. This game was first introduced to Olympic competition at the Tokyo Games of 1964. The U.S. won its first medals in the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics when the men captured the gold and the women the silver. There are 30 rules in the game of volleyball.

Kong Block: A blocker who only uses one arm to block, the other arm hangs either by the side, or on the net, like King Kong swatting at planes from the Empire State Building.

Third year head coach, Leigh Cole, is very excited about the upcoming season as the Nighthawks are coming off of their first non-losing season. The Nighthawks moved up two divisions as a result of their success and competitive games versus bigger and more established programs. They will compete in Division II where top teams include Madison, Valley Center, Saint Augustine, Mount Miguel and Mission Bay. Thank you for your support!

Although they graduated a number of skilled players from last year’s squad, the returning team is full of strong competitors and skilled athletes. egal issues are always a difficult subject to handle and discuss. Throw in family, loss and love, and it makes decisions all the emotionally challenging. We sat down with Stacy DenHerder, president of DenHerder & Associates in Scripps Ranch to discuss the benefits of estate planning, trusts, and what makes their local firm special to residents of 92127.

What is the history of DenHerder & Associates?

Our firm is unique because of the “heart” aspect. In everything that we do, our goal is to think through to the end game – will this plan divide your family or cause them to come closer? We strive to help our clients make thoughtful decisions so their children do not inherit too much too young. To guarantee that their family members understand their motives and intentions, we encourage our clients to put their own “heart” into their plan. For example, in our own estate plan, my husband and I wrote to our sons about our advice on having a strong marriage, our faith, and how we would rather that everything we have burn, than for them to lose their relationship with one another. Real life examples and expert counsel help our clients design heartfelt, intentional and thoughtful estate plans.

S

ince the inception of Free Flight, the sanctuary has expanded into a full-fledged non-profit organization, bent on continuing the mission of its former benefactor. It has succeeded admirably, sprouting out various programs that cater to individuals of all ages. For instance, its outreach program reaches out to schools, animal shelters, senior centers and community events. As a result, Free Flight has charmed adults and entranced children. “Kids love interacting with the birds; getting the chance to feed, pet or hold an exotic bird create memories that last a lifetime,” explained Sarah Booher, a Free Flight representative. Besides the on-site activities, Free Flight provides a Junior Docent program, which teaches kids ages 12 to 18 about birds and how to volunteer. But kids are not the only volunteers – adults are also encouraged to help out by cleaning the facility, helping at fundraisers and promoting Free Flight. A visit to Free Flight merits a good look at the koi pond – stocked with slightly whiskered fish in bright shades – and the main attraction, the stunningly gorgeous birds. Besides being able to interact with these squawking residents, visitors may also learn of their colorful background. “All the birds here have their own unique and interesting story,” shared Sarah. The facility on site continuously seeks ways to keep the birds healthy and thriving in the Free Flight environment. Perhaps your visit to Free Flight will inspire you to house one of these feathery bundles of joy at home. Those who are interested in adopting a bird can fill out an application and meet the adoptable birds; upon being accessed, the applicant will be matched to a bird and hopefully, a lasting bond will be formed. However, those who are simply searching for refreshingly educational and fun adventure can be guaranteed one at Free Flight. Bring a few dollars and an open mind, and be prepared for a “flying” fascination like no other! 

FITNESS Award-Winning Tennis Coach, Ray Smith, Brings Aces to the Westwood Club by AMY LEHRER | photos by Spark Photography

ead tennis director and pro of the Westwood Club, Ray Smith, reminisces about two students: 7-year-old Mike Sell and 80-year-old Ann Swartz. Mike became the professional tennis player his mom wanted by playing at Wimbledon and becoming Monica Seles’ sparing partner. Ann Swartz began taking lessons in her fifties and eventually played former Wimbledon champion Dodo Bundy. “The beauty of tennis,” Ray explained, “is that it can be experienced to some degree by players ages four and up.” Playing team tennis cultivates camaraderie, and those who stick with it can earn college scholarships. The tennis program at the Westwood Club includes morning weekday adult lessons, afterschool and weekend youth clinics, holiday vacation and summer camps running from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Thursdays with extended camp care available and individual lessons. Each camp accommodates every skill level, and lowerlevel kids can opt for a cool-down swim or mini-golf during their lunch break. Taking lessons and practicing before each game enables individuals to remain injury free for life. Having taught tennis since 1974, Ray offers parents sound advice. Assist with ball pick-up during lessons, help throw balls during beginning group lessons, restrict questions to your child’s assigned time, keep comments to kids positive and wait to discuss what can be learned from a lost match until the next day. If parents want to coach their kids also, they should ask the coach for direction to avoid situations like teaching a slice before topspin is mastered. Also, Ray advised, “Parents need to realize that the amount of practice time is relative to improvement provided the right concepts are practiced.” Ray attended Poway Unified schools, played varsity tennis on a league champion Poway High School team under Coach Campbell and played on intercollegiate tennis teams at Palomar and United States International University. Ray also taught tennis in England, Oregon, the RB Swim and Tennis Club and P.E. for the San Marcos Unified School District. Ray remarked, “High school coaching was fun, but I am more honored to be named the USTA 2012 San Diego Junior Team Tennis Coach of the Year.” The entire Smith family plays tennis, and Ray’s two daughters now attend Palomar with one hoping to become an aesthetic RN and the other studying psychology. Ray remains fit by playing tennis, bicycling and roller skiing. He also hopes to take interested tennis coaches and students to New Zealand for some Kiwi tennis matches. ¢

Low Inventory? It’s the New Normal. by SCOTT VOAK

L

ast issue I wrote about rising interest rates and their effect on home values going forward. I made the case that although increasing rates and prices are eroding purchasing power; there is enough demand to keep prices from falling. So far, that has been the case. While it is true that the panic among buyers has lessened (most investors have backed out of the market, leaving only owner-occupied home buyers to compete), homes that are correctly (not necessarily lowest) priced and effectively marketed are still attracting multiple offers. The main reason for this is that inventory remains constrained. There are now a significant number of home owners who have artificially low interest rates due to loan modifications. I have seen a $750K loan with a $2,800/monthly payment. That homeowner is not going to sell. Ever. Even if they move it makes more sense to rent the property out since there is very little equity and it would be a cash flow positive rental. An interesting development is that this latest bump in interest rates has created an even larger group of homeowners with exceptionally low rates who are now very unlikely to move. For over six months, rates were under four percent due to government intervention and lenders were very successful at refinancing everyone who had enough equity to qualify. Therefore, people with equity have artificially low payments while those who could not qualify do not have the equity to sell and be able to afford a new down payment. So, inventory is going to be constrained for some time. As property values continue to increase, owners who now have only marginal equity may find themselves in a position to either move up or down depending on their needs. However, if rates keep rising, it is going to be harder to walk away from current financing, even if it seems high today. The bottom line is, I expect fewer homes to be listed for sale in the future than we have had in the recent past. That’s not ideal for people in the real estate profession, but good for neighborhood and community stability as people will put down more permanent roots. ¢

Wranglers Square Dance Club Celebrates Student Graduation & New Class

T

he Wranglers Square Dance Club announced its 40th anniversary student graduation in June, with 18 students now able to square dance at a “Plus” level. The club began on April 9, 1973 when nine couples finished square dance instruction taught by Sherm Barth. Those couples quickly recruited others and graduated the club’s first “class” of dancers in September of 1974. There has been a new Wrangler class taught every year since, and this year’s class enjoyed their new dancing skills at a graduation dance at the Rancho Bernardo Community Center Gazebo in late June. Class members learn roughly 115 “calls” over a nine-month period, which qualifies them to dance at the Club’s “Plus” level. Club members serve as “angels” (dancing helpers) for the students during the Wednesday night classes. A new Wrangler class begins Sept. 11 at 7 p.m. at Rolling Hills Elementary in Rancho Peñasquitos. Currently the Club holds its dances at Rolling Hills Elementary School during the school year and at the Gazebo in the Rancho Bernardo Community Park from June through August. The club’s annual “Hustler Rustler” western-themed dance is held in November at the Poway Community Center. Dances are attended by people from all over San Diego County.

Wrangler Club membership has varied from the original 18 to over 130 regular club members in the mid-1980s. The club, currently 62 strong, has members from Poway, Rancho Bernardo, Rancho Peñasquitos, 4S Ranch and surrounding areas. In addition to teaching classes and holding monthly dances, the Wranglers also participate in community events, and do demonstrations to bring others into the activity. There have been Wranglers in Rancho Bernardo’s Spirit of the Fourth parade, Grape Days, RB Alive, the Escondido Street Fair, the San Diego County Fair and Poway’s Spring Fest Street Fair. The Wranglers also participated in a square dancing “flash mob” last November in Balboa Park. Recently a square dance “demo” was done at the 7th Annual PQ-NE Action Group Neighborhood BBQ/Picnic, and members of the club helped Del Norte High School students complete a “final exam” for their physical education course. The club is run by a volunteer board of officers led by current presidents, Mary Sundberg Whealdon and John Coffin. The Wranglers are an affiliate of the Palomar Square Dance Association. henever our children play games, we want them to have fun, be safe and follow the rules. Luckily that’s what 4S Ranch Legacy resident and District 31 Little League umpire, Ken Judd, also wants. As a sought-after umpire who oversees between 50 and 70 games per year, Ken’s devotion to the craft has even earned him the John W. Coffey Scholarship Award, which rewards an umpire’s effort, respect and dedication to his officiating duties. When asked about his umpiring accolades, Ken humbly commented, “It is a never-ending task of trying to improve. I’m where I’m at now mostly from on-the-field training; you just learn as you go and try to get better. I have been to a weekend rules clinic and a weeklong umpire school at the Little League Western Region facility, and continue to get feedback from other umpires that I work with.” Ken got his start umpiring shortly after coaching his eldest son’s baseball team in 2004, when he realized that the 4S Ranch Little League was in desperate need of umpires. Nominated to lend umpiring assistance for the District 31 All Star Tournament, Ken consequently got himself noticed. He said, “During that process, I was recognized by the district staff as someone who

may be a candidate for the District 31 Umpires Mentor Program. I worked for a year with a terrific mentor, Don Wolever, and after that program I was given the John W. Coffey Scholarship Award and asked to be a District 31 Staff Umpire.” Completely committed to providing an enjoyable learning experience for the little leaguers, Ken is glad he can witness their progress. He professed, “I try to give every player an equal opportunity to succeed within the rules. It is very satisfying to see kids having fun and getting better.” When he’s not umpiring games, Ken is a vice president/certified financial planner for investments with Wells Fargo Advisors, LLC. He also works alongside Adult Protective Services and the FBI to sponsor educational presentations for the senior communities on preventing Elder Fiduciary Abuse. To unwind, Ken loves snowboarding, off-roading in his jeep and just spending time with his wife, daughter and two sons. Urging others to lend a helping hand within the Little League if possible, Ken acknowledged, “Volunteering is a wonderful way to impact a kid’s life in a positive way.” ¢

:::: nighthawk insider by JACKIE WIBOWO special to 92127 Magazine

This One’s for the Freshmen H

ere’s to the end of your last summer free of worries, to the beginning of collegeplanning and late nights fueled by five-hour energy, and to the crazy rollercoaster that starts now: your high school journey. You are about to face some of the most exciting, challenging and unpredictable years in your life. Three years ago – though it feels like less than one – I was in your shoes. Not to worry though, you have our very own Link Crew, who will host your freshmen orientation and of course, our peer counselors who will be happy to help you with whatever you need. So here’s my two cents, a Nighthawk 101 crash course. One major thing will differ from my Nighthawk experiences to yours: we’re established now. We are Del Norte, a California Distinguished School. The trimester system

allows you to take advantage of a rigorous course-load in a shorter amount of time. You can take the advanced math track and find yourself in AP Calculus AB as a sophomore, or the advanced science track that allows you to take biology and chemistry in one year. With 13 students headed to UC Berkeley alone and 12 National Merit Scholars from the class of 2013, you have a reputation to live up to. After all, our very own freshmen Academic League team took home the North County Inland title last year. You will notice right away that Nighthawks excel on the field as well. Take it from Kyra Carusa, an incoming senior who was recruited in the summer of her sophomore year to play soccer for Stanford University: “I kept myself motivated by remembering that this was an opportunity that would open many doors for my future,” she shared. Almost 500 Nighthawks have earned their varsity letters, and many are scholar-athletes as well. And, take note, you are

also expected to show up in blue and green and cheer with ‘The Flock’ at our first home game against Rancho Buena Vista. But it doesn’t stop there. Nighthawks look beyond what’s going on just between the gates of our school – we strive to impact the world. In our 2nd annual Global Awareness Week, we raised funds for victims of the Oklahoma Tornado, launched a screening of The Lorax, packaged food for 20,000 underprivileged youth through FFCC, and raised awareness for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. So congratulations on joining the Nighthawk community. As you strive to be “college-ready, future-focused and globally-aware” (per our mission statement), know that you have over 1,800 other students right behind you. ¢ Jacqueline Wibowo is a senior at Del Norte High School. She is participating in an internship program with 92127 Magazine and can be contacted at info@92127magazine.com.

nline registration has opened for the San Diego 9-11 Memorial Stair Climb, a competition in which participants climb 110 floors in honor of the FDNY firefighters who lost their lives on Sept. 11, 2001. The annual event, held at the Hilton San Diego Bayfront hotel, is sponsored by FirefighterAid, a local nonprofit organization that provides assistance to firefighters and their widows and orphans. All members of the public are welcome to participate, join in patriotic festivities or make a donation in support of firefighters and their families. Climbers will gather at the Hilton San Diego Bayfront hotel on the morning of the event. Each participant will receive a badge and photo to honor the memories of the 412 first-responders who died on 9-11. “Last year’s stair climb was a tremendous success,” said Robert Bunsold, Firefighter and board member of FirefighterAid. “The outpouring of support was so profound that we have doubled the number of participants for the 12th anniversary event.” To register or for more information, visit www.sdfra.org/stairclimb2.html. ¢

To Be... Not to Be

Penicillin V stricks molecular model

Penicillin allergic? P

enicillin is the most commonly reported medication allergy, and is self-reported by about 5 to 10 percent of patients. However, according to Dr Kusum Sharma, Director, Allergy & Asthma Clinics at AKANE Institute of Allergy, Asthma & Sleep Medicine, most of these patients are not truly penicillin allergic. In large-scale studies of penicillin skin testing, approximately 85 to 90 percent of these individuals are found not to have positive skin tests and are able to tolerate penicillins. Nine out of ten people who believe they are allergic can take penicillin without a problem, either because they were never truly allergic or because their allergy to penicillin has resolved over time. People who have a remote history of allergic reaction to a medication may become less allergic as time passes. The good news is that recently FDA has approved Pre-Pen so allergists can now offer skin testing for penicillin. This is covered by most insurance companies. Testing usually takes about one hour to complete. The skin is pricked and injected with Pre-Pen and observed for a reaction. A positive skin reaction is an itchy, red bump that lasts about half an hour and then resolves.

A positive test indicates that the person is truly allergic and should continue to avoid penicillins. If the patient completes the skin testing without a positive reaction, a single oral dose of full strength penicillin is commonly given to confirm that the patient does not have an allergy to the medication. Dr Kusum Sharma then notifies the 9 out of 10 patients’ other treating doctors so they can remove the penicillin allergy people who believe label from their medical charts. they are allergic According to Dr Sharma, there are many advantages of removing the can take penicillin penicillin allergy label: without a problem.” • Millions of people are incorrectly ~Dr. Kusum Sharma, labeled as penicillin allergic Akane Institute for some “non-allergic adverse

reaction.” • Doctors can have the freedom to choose any antibiotic • Using Penicillins allows to reduce cost as co-pay for these antibiotics is usually lower. • Penicillins are still considered very effective and less toxic than most other antibiotics. • The use of narrow spectrum antibiotics like most Penicillins rather than other broad spectrum antibiotics helps prevent emergence of multi-drug resistance organisms. So as Dr. Sharma puts it, for many of us the choice is ours: To be or not to be...Penicillin allergic! ¢
