Community. Family. Fun.
Associate Editor Sarabeth McElhaney
I grew up in North San Diego County. I played sports…went to high school…got my first job…went to college…even met my wife – all in North County. Several years ago, we launched our first community magazine. The goal was simple – to publish a local magazine that people actually wanted to read. Since publishing our original issue back in 2009, ZCode Magazines has grown to a family of 10 community titles – each focusing on specific areas of North County. I have the privilege of wearing two hats: one as publisher of ZCode Magazines and the other as a North County father, husband and resident. As publisher, I am proud to say that we (the ZCode team) take great pride at striving to meet our goal. Our team members are all local San Diegans. Our editorial staff, writers, and photographers are actually on the ground in the communities that we serve – shaking hands, meeting people and participating in local activities. As a North County resident, I take great pride in our communities. I’ve found that most people choose to live in North County because we like it here, and we are proud to call North County our home. Many people consider North County as one of the best places to live in the world – I agree. I couldn’t imagine living and raising my three children anywhere else. By picking up the latest issue of Del Sol Magazine – or checking out www.delsolmagazine.com – you can take a moment to relax and experience a local magazine that is made for you. You can see other local families, students, businesses and community leaders who all share something in common – the place we call home. We encourage you to tell us what you think and what you want to see and read in Del Sol Magazine, and we encourage suggestions on who and what we should put in the local spotlight. Wondering where Del Sol Magazine came from? Be sure to check out the feature on page 12. We show you the people behind the scenes at ZCode. We also show you the special Charter Business Members that made it possible to have a complimentary high-gloss, hyper-local magazine delivered directly to your mailboxes. Don’t forget to say hello and mention Del Sol Magazine when you visit them!

A Glittering Gala... Don Diego Party at the Fair was a Fundraiser and a Fun-Raiser special submission by MARILYN CAMPBELL | photos by Heather Marsh
T
he stars were out on the evening of June 15 for the Steve Miller Band concert at the San Diego County Fair Grandstand. Earlier, the stars were inside the famed Turf Club, scene of the annual Don Diego Scholarship Foundation Gala. Since 1986, the Foundation has awarded more than $600,000 in college scholarships and grants for agricultural education. Before settling in their VIP concert seats to rock out with the band, famous for such songs as Fly Like an Eagle, guests enjoyed cocktails, a silent auction, gourmet dinner and introduction of 2013 scholars Brooke Buckley, Matt Kelly and Scott Jacobson, each of whom received a $5,000 scholarship. Tessa Adler, first in her Point Loma class and bound for Yale, received $5,000 plus the first $5,000 Spanjian scholarship for a total of $10,000. Among the guests were Del Mar Council members Lee Haydu, Don Mosier and Sherryl Parks, as well as Mayor Emeritus Richard Earnest with his wife Jackee; current and former 22nd District Agricultural Association (22nd DAA) and Don Diego Board members including Adam Day, Fred Schenk, Allan Royster and Bob Vice; Fairgrounds CEO/Don Diego President Tim Fennell; Josh Rubenstein of the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club, the Gala’s platinum sponsor, as well as many business and society affiliates. Don Diego Chair, Paul Ecke III, said he was honored to present a special tribute to “Father of the Don Diego Scholarship Foundation” Bob Spanjian, after whom an endowment Spanjian Family Scholarship was recently created. The scholarship has already raised more than $15K due in part to ambitious fundraiser, Leslie Barone.

2. Paul Ecke III with three student recipients. 3. Jim Berg’s $2,000 3. bid wins him the Steve Miller Band autographed and painted guitar. Bob Spanjian is a Don Diego founder who has served as secretary/ treasurer since the Foundation’s establishment in 1986. The non-profit Foundation is sponsored by the 22nd DAA. Decades ago, his family’s fabric design business developed Fiber K, which came to be known in their honor as Spandex, one of the most ubiquitous materials in the world. The gala culminated with a live auction led by Fred Schenk. After heavy bidding, Jim Berg’s $2,000 bid won him an autographed, personally painted Steve Miller Band guitar. Proceeds from the auction and entire gala will enable the Foundation to maintain and possibly expand its scholarship programs. “The 2013 Gala represented a joining together of past, present and future; of elements that make our region unique and strong. These include agriculture, innovation and people with the character, drive and community commitment to envision and create a better tomorrow. We look forward to growing our enduring legacy,” shared Ecke. For more information, visit www.dondiegoscholarship.org. ¢

:::: COMPANY PROFILE
Where’d this magazine come from?
Meet the
Team
In 2009, we launched our first community magazine. The goal was to publish a local magazine that people actually wanted to read. Since publishing our premiere issue of 92127 Magazine, ZCode Magazines has grown to a family of 10 community titles that focus on specific areas of North County. The ZCode team, or shall we say, family, takes great pride at meeting our overall goal in every issue we build together. We all live locally in San Diego and we are actively involved in every one of the communities. Whether we are shaking hands, meeting people, participating in school, sports, organizations and philanthropic events, we are out there learning and sharing the good news about what’s going on in your community. Thank you for inviting us into your home.
Derrick Breaux | Publisher I’ve always found it rewarding to build things. I like the process just as much as I enjoy the end result. It’s great to see each issue of the magazines grow from concept to hard copy. My typical day at the office consists of interacting closely with the editorial, production, graphics and sales teams.
Tyler McElhaney | Creative Director The nickname “Tynology” can almost describe my obsession with the latest, greatest, newest, most exclusive “thing.” At the ZCode office one can usually find me designing covers, playing with cameras, editing photos, redesigning websites, searching for “that one” cable, fixing computers and re-redesigning websites.
Tara Pritchett | Editor Born and raised in San Diego, I’m a mom to three beautiful daughters and a spunky golden retriever. I have spent over 14 blissful years married to the love of my life where every day brings us adventure and joy. A daily run keeps me happy. At the office one can find me giddy about upcoming feature stories and excited about the inspirational and community-driven people who I have the privilege to meet on a daily basis.
12 • DelSolMagazine.com • Premiere Issue 2013
Sarabeth McElhaney | Associate Editor As a San Diego transplant from the City of Good Neighbors, I am constantly falling deeper in love with my “new” home every day. ZCode has helped me discover everything there is to offer in our bountiful region of the west coast. At the ZCode office one can usually find me sorting through the mountain of news and events in our area. You know I mean business when my hair is tied up in a messy bun.
Jessica Breaux | Director of Business Development I am a native San Diegan and I couldn’t imagine working, playing and raising my family anywhere else. I spend most of my evenings and weekends being a soccer mom of three. At the ZCode office one can usually find me juggling lots just as I do at home. If I’m not at the office pushing paperwork you will find me out networking in our communities.
Katie Mott | Senior Graphic Designer Originally from Indiana, the pull of the ocean got me out west. I have happily lived in San Diego 5 years now, and if I’m not in the office, I can be found soaking up the sun at the beach, kayaking, playing with my pup or traveling to faraway places every chance I get. At the ZCode office one can usually find me rallying around everyone to hit our deadlines!
Mani Salazar | Graphic Designer San Diego born and bred, I’ve been to 49 states and wouldn’t live anywhere else! (Alaska is #50). Married for two years to my beautiful wife, we enjoy traveling and going on as many adventures as possible. I’m blessed to design for a living – it’s definitely my passion. At the ZCode office one can usually find me staring wide-eyed at the monitor, eating sunflower seeds, being extremely OCD with my designs or trying to sneak in as much hand-lettering as possible. Who says we have to grow up?!
Traci Sally | Graphic Designer I recently moved to Carlsbad from Philadelphia checking off a landmark goal on my bucket list to make a home by the ocean. I’ve been designing for the past 10 years and can’t imagine doing anything else. Outside work I trade my mouse for a paintbrush or my woodblock press and enjoy spending time on the local beaches. At the office one can find me creating smartly balanced ads and layouts fueled by a giant Starbucks iced coffee (venti, no room with an extra shot, shaken)

Sally O’Neill | Production Coordinator I am the proud mother of a fun-loving teenager. When I’m not perusing college sites online or on another college tour, I like taking long walks with my husband, friends and my dog, Rascal. Cooking, entertaining and dining out are favorite pastimes as well. At ZCode, I work closely with advertisers and our graphics, sales and editorial departments. My nickname is “Office Mom.” I love taking care of our amazing team.
Heather Lockwood | Production Coordinator I am a mother to two wonderful boys, and a wife to the love of my life of 16 years, with over nine pets; dogs, cats, rabbits, birds and fish. In my free time, I enjoy making and fixing jewelry for friends and family. I’m known in the office as “Lockwood” and can usually be found sending emails and being the liaison between our marketing and graphics departments. I love seeing the magazines printed knowing I helped make it happen.
Michelle Dystak | Senior Marketing Consultant My first sales job was at the age of seven. My parents owned Santa Fe Clothing on Stevens Avenue in Solana Beach. My “job” was to select just the right tie for customers buying a new suit. Who could resist a seven-year-olds fashion pointers? You won’t find me at the office very often because I am out spreading the word about ZCode and meeting with local Carlsbad businesses.

I enjoy walking my dogs on the beach, hiking Torrey Pines and playing beach volleyball with my daughters. ZCode is like one big family. We all work together and share one common goal - to create a magazine that people want to read. Everyone wins!
Teresa Fae | Soul of Photography | Del Sol Photographer I’m a freelance photographer and owner of Soul Of Photography studios, based in Encinitas. s any parent knows, the ability to read is crucial to one's success in school and in life. This is no more apparent than when a child is just starting out in school and – for kids who struggle – that's when Maria Bagby likes to catch them. "Language is thought and thought is expanded through reading," observed Maria. "That’s why reading and writing are so important for every child and that’s why I go to work every day knowing that I’m changing people’s lives." With three Master’s degrees, a PhD, training as an educational therapist and over 25 years in the classroom as a teacher, reading specialist and administrator, Maria brings an amazing knowledge base to bear with her students. When she saw what a difference she could make one-on-one, she began the Therapeutic Literacy Center in Colorado. This past spring, she relocated to Solana Beach. Maria has made it her business to get to know the city, the schools and her fellow education professionals. "I recognize that schools just can’t do it all," acknowledged Maria. "There’s no blame associated, it’s a matter of resources. That’s why I had to leave and find a way to sit with children one-on-one and give them the time and attention that they need." Now she and her colleague, Dana Reynolds, provide assistance to homeschooling families as well as children with dyslexia, ADHD and autism. "The mission of the Therapeutic Literacy Center is to provide short term intervention for struggling students by accelerating the time it takes for them to 'catch up' to their peers," explained Maria. "I cater to the 20 to 25% of students who just can’t get their needs met in the system of school." Most rewarding, she says, is "the impact we have on students’ lives in our ability to accelerate their learning so that our students catch up quickly and don’t need us after six to 12 weeks." Maria is also making time to get to know her neighborhood. "My favorite things to do are walk the beach in Del Mar, ride my bike up and down the coast and frequent the Solana Beach Coffee Company," shared Maria. "I’m enjoying the warm weather and friendly people here in Southern California. I love it that everyone is outside walking, running, riding bikes, going to yoga and sitting in coffee shops!"

TOURNAMENT fights BREAST CANCER ON THE FIELD
T
he second annual Kickin’ It Challenge, a two-day youth soccer tournament that brought 124 teams together from all over San Diego to help fight the battle against breast cancer, recently raised $32,000 in late June. One hundred percent of the proceeds were donated to Susan G. Komen for the Cure, San Diego to provide free diagnostic mammograms, surgeries, meal delivery, child care and temporary financial aid to local women. “This is more than a soccer tournament. It is a fundraiser for a cause that touches families, and specifically many of our own soccer moms,” said Pam Bickel, Kickin’ It Challenge Director. Laura Farmer-Sherman, Executive Director of Susan G. Komen San Diego shared her gratitude, “We are overjoyed the Kickin’ It Challenge raised money for San Diego women for the second year in a row. We love seeing kids and families come together to show their support for the all moms in the soccer world going through breast cancer.” ¢

:::: STUDENT STAR
Setting Up
Junior Reily Buechler Hits the Books and the Volleyball at Torrey Pines High School by Angie gallo | photos by Soul of Photography
R
eily Buechler is on the cusp of entering her senior year at Torrey Pines High School (TPHS) and is eager to soar through it after a summer of family fun on and off the volleyball courts. Having lived in Del Mar since second grade, Reily enjoys all the community has to offer. Reily, her parents Jud and Lindsey, and her sister Brynn spend quality time together at the beach and can regularly be found at their favorite local spots like Station Sushi and Java Depot. Some student athletes play several sports, but Reily has focused her efforts on just one – volleyball. Receiving the MVP award from the Durango Classic in Las Vegas, as well as CIF Player of the Year, Reily has paved the way for a bright future. When asked what or who inspires her, Reily responded, “My mom probably inspires me the most because she realizes that if you want to be happy you have to make sacrifices for yourself and your well-being.” Reily's inspiration also comes from UCLA volleyball player Kelly Reeves, and is another reason she enjoys her sport and strives to be the best she can be. As her junior year just wrapped up and her senior year is just around the corner, Reily is looking forward to her summer plans. She will be attending UCLA volleyball camp in July and, as she mentioned, “working out as much as possible to be ready for my senior year of volleyball.” Being a student athlete and scholar at TPHS has been an incredible experience for Reily. Her teachers are like family and have been a huge support to her throughout the years. “My favorite subject is psychology, which I have just gotten in to this year but it’s a subject I understand and want to learn more about,” said Reily. As she enters her senior year as a Falcon this August, Reily is excited about her future and all that it brings. Her childhood was paradise growing up in Del Mar and from the sounds of it her adult years will be filled with much of the same.

Del Mar Library Celebrates 100 Years & a Fresh New Look
T
photos by Zeena Gregg Photography
his year, the San Diego County Library system celebrated 100 Years of Stories with events and activities taking place throughout 2013. The Del Mar Library hosted a celebration in mid-June in honor of the system’s centennial and the branch’s recent remodel. The event included music by acoustic guitarist KEV, refreshments and special remarks by Supervisor Dave Roberts, City of Del Mar Mayor Terry Sinnott and José Aponte, Director of the San Diego County Library. The Del Mar Library recently went through a remodel which was funded by a grant from District 3, the Friends of the Del Mar Library, San Diego County Library, the City of Del Mar and the Del Mar Farmer’s Market. The remodel included additional seating, updated spaces for children and teens, carpet and a new marketplace area where popular materials are readily available for customers to check out. “The most exciting thing about the remodel is that we have so much more light for people to be able to see what a beautiful facility the library truly is. We also have a teen area for the first time, along with more access for Wi-Fi than ever before,” shared Patricia Freedman with Friends of the Del Mar Library. “The Del Mar Library remodel coincided perfectly with our centennial,” said Aponte. “It shows that even after 100 years, we’re still growing and making sure our branches are the absolute best they can be for our customers.” ¢
For more information on centennial celebrations taking place at branches throughout the year, visit www.sdcl.org/centennial. To learn about events going on at the newly remodeled Del Mar Library, contact branch staff at 858-755-1666, or, better yet, stop by to check it out!

The Curtis Family May Relish Adventure, but They Call Del Mar Home by wynne love | photos by Soul of Photography
L
ani and Joe Curtis met at a camp in Big Bear when they were mere teens. Their lives have taken them far afield since, but they are proud to call Del Mar home. "There is a strong, multigenerational sense of community in Del Mar," commented Lani, and the Curtis family contributes to it. With four generations now living within the boundaries of Del Mar and Solana Beach, it especially feels like home to them. "We love walking, biking into town or the beach, walking the bluffs and catching the sunset," reflected Lani. Lani grew up in Del Mar and attended Torrey Pines High School, but headed east for college, earning her BA in Art History from Dartmouth in 1998. Joe went to high school in Sonoma County and attended college in Colorado, and then served as a physics and chemistry teacher for the Peace Corps in Benin. Between them, they have lived in five different countries and have traveled to 45 countries on six of the seven continents.

Now Lani works as director of development for Horizon Prep in Rancho Santa Fe and Joe is executive vice president of sales and business development for The Pango Group. Joe serves on the Design Review Board for the City of Del Mar and Lani serves on the Planning Commission and volunteers for the PTA at Del Mar Heights Elementary School, where two of their three boys attend school. Despite this settled family life, Lani and Joe maintain a global focus. "We are involved in a local charity called One Billion Thirsty that helps build awareness around the world’s water crisis," explained Lani. They are also active in their church, Horizon Christian Fellowship. Their sons Cole (7), James (6) and Rees (3) also keep them busy. "We’re on a first name basis with many of the lovely folks at Urgent Care," laughed Lani. "On one occasion, one of our boys got injured in the ER waiting area, while we were waiting to see the doctor for another one of our boys…" They love all sports, and with Lani's father, Brian Sipe, on the Aztecs' coaching staff, they are born football fans. They also keep up on pop culture, with Cole and James performing Gangnam Style for the Del Mar Heights Talent Show this year. "They were very proud," reported Lani, "and mom and dad didn't know they had it in them."

Summer Music Calls: Del Mar Concert Series 2013 The Del Mar Fairgrounds has had its turn of providing both native San Diegans and tourists with entertainment ranging from prize-winning booths to the gluttonous indulgence of fried butter. Through August and early September, the Del Mar Racetrack will host its 2013 concert series featuring a wide range of artists, including Cali-native group Iration (Aug. 2), dreadlocked reggae band Steel Pulse (Aug. 16) and alternative rock band Weezer (Aug. 17). Students Receive Scholarships from Chelsea’s Light Foundation
A “service over self” ethic coupled with academic drive earned 10 San Diego County high school students the third year of Sunflower Scholarships to be awarded from Chelsea’s Light Foundation. The Sunflower Scholarship Class of 2013 represents students who now attend an array of colleges including CSU San Marcos, Harvard, UC Riverside, Whitman College and Yale. A total of $73,000 will be awarded to these 10 students over the next four years. “Just as Chelsea was one-of-a-kind and lived an extraordinary life, these teenagers are compassionate, visionary and will make positive change in their own unique way,” said Kelly King. “They value individuality and embrace diversity in activities, relationships and perspective.” All 10 winners were thrilled to learn at the Sunflower Scholarship awards event, held in early June at the Del Mar Marriott, that they will receive ongoing scholarship monies from Chelsea’s Light Foundation. Other surprises revealed were new Sony Vaio laptops for each student donated by Sony Electronics, with a combined value of over $10,000, along with a sweatshirt from the college that each recipient will be attending in the fall.

The San Diego SeaLions (3-0-1) held an inter-squad charity match on June 30 at Cathedral Catholic High School. All proceeds from the game were donated to The Chisomo Idea, an international humanitarian organization that uses soccer to make a difference in the lives of children in the country of Malawi. The Chisomo Idea was founded by Noel Musicha and his wife, former SeaLions’ player, Melissa Musicha. “It’s always a privilege to be able to give back just by doing what you love,” said SeaLions’ Co-Captain Danica Carey. “Soccer has definitely always been a huge positive influence in my life, and I am happy to support a program that spreads the love in that way.” The SeaLions split into two teams during the afternoon, one blue and one white. In recognition of the two most prolific goal scorers in the women’s game, team white was known as “Team Abby [Wambach]”, while the blue was named “Team Mia [Hamm]”. Team Abby ended up with a 2-1 edge over Team Mia. For more information on the SeaLions, visit www.sealionsoccer.com.

In Case You Missed It: 17th Annual Gerry Wilson Golf Classic
The 17th Annual Gerry Wilson Golf Classic was held at Maderas Golf Club in early June. The event began with a shotgun start and lunch provided by Sycuan Casino. This year’s Gerry Wilson Golf Classic hosted nearly 120 players for a day of golf, games, dinner and auctions, with photo booths, libations and themed tees. Keeping with tradition, the 9th Annual Wacky Slacks Contest was held as a tribute to former Better Business Bureau (BBB) CEO Gerry Wilson, who was known for wearing outrageous trousers to the tournament. Dave Ferguson was awarded “Best Individual Wacky Slacks” and the team from Platypus was awarded “Best Overall Theme/Wackiest Outfit.” The team from FBS Property Management was awarded “Best Tee Theme” in their Gilligan’s Island outfits and props. Golfers gathered raffle prizes and joined together for a dinner hosted by the current BBB President & CEO, Sheryl Bilbrey while they bid on silent auction items ranging from a Catalina Island getaway, spa packages, tickets to the American Music Awards and more. Attendees were also encouraged to participate in a live auction featuring a signed Tim McGraw guitar and tickets to an upcoming concert, a three-night stay at The Modern Honolulu Hotel and a package of field level Padres tickets and dinner at a Cohn Family restaurant. All auction items were generously donated by members of the San Diego community.

Q&A with Craig Dado,
Chief Marketing Officer, Del Mar Thoroughbred Club DID YOU KNOW? When Del Mar opened in 1937, Bing Crosby was at the gate to personally greet the fans.
What is your role as the chief marketing officer for DMTC? My primary responsibility is to develop and sustain the Del Mar brand. Del Mar is a world-class racetrack, but it’s a lot more than that. It’s my job to make people aware of that, to convince them to visit Del Mar and to make sure we pay it off when they do attend. I’ve been at Del Mar since 2001.
What is your goal/vision for the upcoming season? I think we’re going to have a great season. The economy is improving and people seem to be getting out more. We averaged over 17,600 per day last year – the goal is to stretch that to 18,000 per day this season.
What is the most exciting thing about the upcoming 2013 season? Opening Day is always the highlight of the meet. We’ve topped the alltime attendance record six years in a row on Opening Day. Let’s hope we do it again.
Have there been any updates or changes to the season and/or the track? We’ve added Del Mar Grill Fest (Aug. 17) this year. The event will be held in the concert area where more than 30 championship barbeque teams, restaurants and caterers will be serving up anything and everything grilled, including
desserts. We’re also partnering with the organization that runs the San Diego International Beer Festival. On July 27 we will showcase more than 40 beers from the San Diego area and on Aug. 31, more than 40 IPAs will be featured. Our beer fests will certainly be bigger and better than ever before.
What would you tell a guest who has never been to the races? Why should they come out for a day at the track? There really is something for everyone at the track. We are right

next to the ocean and you can’t beat that. To top it off, watching horses and jockeys race is exciting – for veteran spectators and new fans alike.
Can you take us through a typical day at the races? Come early and have lunch at one of our restaurants overlooking the paddock. Have a Del Margarita and enjoy the eclectic people and the beautiful horses. Then pick your horses, make your bets and scream your head off. Not a bad day.
What are the featured events this season that guests have to look forward to? We have a great line-up of performers set for the Summer Concert Series, including Sammy Hagar and the fan-favorite, Weezer. Also, the $1 Million TVG Pacific Classic Day to be held on Aug. 25, is our richest and most prestigious day of racing. We will host some of the top equine athletes in the country and we expect to attract many of the country’s top jockeys, trainers and racehorses. The 2013 season events calendar will also feature fan favorites such as the
DEL SOL INSIDER TIPS: Several of the eateries have great views and look out onto the paddock. Recommended signature cocktail: Del Margarita The Turf Club is an exclusive and members-only area of the track. It’s one of the places where celebrities can be found on Opening Day High-end alternatives to the Turf Club at Del Mar: - Luxury suites can be rented for $1,750 per day - A private suite can be yours for $35,000 for the seven-week meet – and you can furnish it however you want Bring some eats and a lawn chair to Del Mar and you can set up camp at the foot of the Grandstand or in the infield. If you’re in the infield, head to the backstretch to watch a race on the turf course. Word on the street is you can hear the jockeys’ banter while they zip past.
BONUS TIP:
A great way to experience the track is to pay for general admission and spend the day roaming from the paddock to the rail and back. However, you can reserve a seat in the Stretch Run or Clubhouse for just $5 to $10 more ($15 on Opening Day) if you want a guaranteed spot to watch the races.
Miss Cougar Del Mar Contest (July 26), Gourmet Food Truck Festival (Aug. 3), Donut Days (July 20 and Aug. 24), Free and Easy Wednesdays (weekly), Daybreak at Del Mar (weekly on Saturdays and Sundays) and handicapping seminars throughout the season. The track’s Family Fun Day happens Sunday, July 21, but families can enjoy kid-friendly activities in the Infield every Saturday and Sunday throughout the meet. And, dog lovers can cheer on the fastest dachshunds in the west between races during the Wiener Dog Nationals – a perennial
family favorite at Del Mar on Labor Day weekend, Sept. 1.
The races have something for everyone to enjoy. Tell us how people of all ages can enjoy the season this year. Daybreak at Del Mar and Donut Days are both great. On Thursdays, admission is free for seniors – 62 and over – Diamond Club members. This comes with free Stretch Run admission, an official program and seat when they present their ID at designated Stretch Run Admission Gates. Kids under 17 are always free. On the
weekends, we have pony rides, obstacle courses and all sorts of family fun set up in the infield.
The season starts quickly after the San Diego County Fair wraps up. What is the process in getting everything ready for Opening Day? It’s crazy. The Fair closed on the 4 th of July and we open 13 days later. The huge stage comes off the racetrack, exhibit halls are transformed into barns and the power washers come out. Crews work around the clock, and we always seem to make it just in time.
Sign up for Del Mar’s Diamond Club and admission is just $3.
What is your favorite thing about the Del Mar Races? I love the people watching – the volume and diversity of characters at Del Mar is unlike any other place. The rich, the not so rich, the young, the old – everyone has an opinion and is not afraid to share it. And then it’s all settled on the track. ¢

As a county supervisor, Dave enjoys being involved in the public process. “I am passionate about preserving and protecting our fragile environment and working on solar and other energy initiatives. Another goal I share with all of my colleagues is keeping the county fiscally solvent while continuing to deliver the best possible services to the public,” related Dave. My 401(k) is Back to Pre-Recession Levels...
Now What?
O
dds are good you’re carrying more responsibility today for your retirement’s financial security. For years, 401(k)s and 403(b)s have been popular workplace savings plans for setting money aside for retirement. Which means paying close attention now to how your money is invested is more important than ever. Many people suffered from dramatic market downturns between 2000 and 2009. Now many retirement savers have since seen their portfolios rejuvenated by the stock market’s recovery, and hopefully your own savings plan is doing better today than it was just a few years ago.
Richard H. Fogg, CFP®
by richard fogg
think long-term Even if retirement is near, manage workplace savings dollars with long-term goals in mind. Retirement, after all, is really a series of goals as you use your savings to fund many years of income needs after you leave the workforce. No matter what stage of retirement planning you are in, consider the following as the amount in your retirement fund fluctuates:
five or more years from retirement Consider keeping your money in a well-diversified portfolio, consistent with your long-term objectives and risk tolerance. There’s time to overcome short-term market fluctuations, so putting your money in market-based investments that vary in value may make sense. While past performance doesn’t guarantee future returns, assets like these have historically generated returns outpacing the cost of living. Other investment alternatives can play modestly beneficial roles in any portfolio mix. Avoid excessive risk from putting too much money into a single investment (one company’s stock, hot mutual funds, highly promoted investments, and so forth.) MOST important: keep funding your retirement and building an emergency
expense savings account. Workers aged 50+ are allowed “catch-up” contributions to workplace retirement plans, making higher annual contributions than younger savers.
within five years of retirement By now you should ideally be on track to achieve your retirement goals without taking undue risks. In most cases your portfolio should remain actively invested, though scaling back more aggressive investment positions may make sense. This could mean modestly reducing exposure to equity markets. But most investors can’t afford to stop investing in stocks and bonds. Decades of retirement may lie ahead, so your money should be positioned to keep pace with inflation over time. This is also the last opportunity to invest more money in a workplace plan, providing a final boost to your retirement’s financial security.
retirement and beyond
There are advantages and disadvantages to keeping your investments in your workplace plan after retirement. It may make sense to roll money from workplace plans into an IRA then manage retirement distributions from a
primary account. Many investors mistakenly withdraw all their money from the market when they retire, but it’s important to continue leveraging the market’s growth potential... with increasing consideration towards preserving what you’ve already accumulated. This strategy allows some of your savings to continue growing, and can be an important way to ensure your nest egg continues generating income over time and keeps pace with the cost of living. The recent investment environment has made anyone planning for retirement protective of their hard-earned dollars. But even after retirement, it’s important to protect your financial security with a long-term frame of mind. ¢
By now, you should ideally be on track to achieve your retirement goals without taking undue risks.

Course of the Force Returns for an Epic Second Journey
O
n the heels of last year’s one-of-a-kind event, Course of the Force (COTF), the lightsaber run that drew the attention of Star Wars fans around the world, is returning July 9 through 16. Kicking off at the famed Skywalker Ranch, participants will continue the relay run down the coast through San Francisco with several stops along the California coastline before reaching the finish line— arriving just in time for the start of the 2013 San Diego Comic-Con International convention. “Our plan to run at Comic-Con screaming with a lightsaber worked beyond our wildest dreams. People showed up! Lots of them! And we were able to grant more than 1,000 wishes for Make-A-Wish Foundation,” said Chris Hardwick, Founder of Nerdist Industries. So, the sponsors are back at it this year. Course of the Force has reteamed with the Make-A-Wish Foundation chapters of Greater Bay, Los Angeles, Orange County and San Diego with 100 percent of all runner registration proceeds benefiting the charity. In 2012, the Make-A-Wish Foundation had a strong presence during the inaugural event,
with Make-A-Wish kids participating in the opening and closing ceremonies of COTF and running in the event. Given the overwhelming response to the 2012 relay, organizers for this year’s event have expanded the course enabling it to cover nearly 500 miles. At the end of event, Course of the Force will be hosting activities at the Chuck Jones Gallery in San Diego during San Diego Comic-Con International from July 18 through 20. This year, participants will be running quarter-mile segments down the California coast, passing off the official Course of the Force lightsaber, and granting wishes for Make-A-Wish children in the process. Runners will be escorted by the official COTF motorcade – a 25-foot-long and 13-foot-tall replica of Jabba’s sail barge from Return of the Jedi. Registration is now open at www.starwars.com/courseoftheforce. Each relay spot is $150, which includes a customized Hasbro lightsaber, exclusive Course of the Force swag bag and the experience of a lifetime. Runners are encouraged to be creative and wear their best Star Wars gear. ¢

Wag West’s Pet Services – Now There’s an App for That! by jackie wibowo | photos by Tyler McElhaney
T
he origin of Wag West, a pet care company using a smart phone app and GPS tracking for dog walking, was a long time in the making. “It stemmed from my lifelong passion for dogs, an entrepreneurial spirit, my quest to find a dog walker or pet sitter that I could completely trust, and a more recent desire to become technologically savvy,” said owner Adam Zucker. “I wanted to combine my love of animals and the skills I learned after years in the corporate world, with a job that would allow me to be happy, and keep in shape as I got older.” Zucker never trusted anyone but himself with his dog, so he rarely traveled and even changed jobs to avoid having to leave town for work. When his neighbors noticed he was always around, Zucker began to get requests to watch their pets. Soon, referrals poured in. “I knew I had to make a decision. I could stay at my corporate job with a comfortable salary
and benefits, or take a risk and become a ‘professional dog guy’. I thought my own small business of dog walking and pet care would be a perfect way to share my desires and skills.” After evaluating the industry, Zucker realized that although his strong business background gave him an advantage over competitors, it wasn’t quite enough. Zucker wanted to adopt Qualcomm’s TAGG, a GPSbased pet tracker for recovering lost pets, for use in traditional dog walking services, allowing clients to see exactly when and where their dogs were being walked, requiring full accountability on the part of the dog walker and providing 100% peace of mind for the owner. In the end, he chose to go with a different smart phone app, custom designed specifically for dog walkers. The system allows pet owners to see when their dogs are picked up and dropped off via email, and allows them to track the dog’s walk live in real time from any computer. Wag West finally came into fruition

We go through several steps to prepare the concrete surface depending on the condition that the surface is in. Who would benefit from having their garage floor refinished by VIP Garage Floors? VIP: Affordable pricing allows for everyone with a concrete surface to be a candidate for a new look – and not just for garage floors. ¢

or the third year in a row, locals celebrated the beginning of summer at the Del Mar Summer Solstice event held at Powerhouse Park. Over the course of the evening, the Del Mar Village Association held one of its largest fundraisers, the annual silent auction, featuring items from a variety of local businesses. Attendees enjoyed signature tastes from over 20 local restaurants, listened to live steel drum music by Semisi and FulaBula, and sampled drinks from over 15 wineries and breweries. The Solstice’s beachfront venue provided the perfect atmosphere to welcome the new season. ¢

Homeowners Cash in Big by CAY AND CARLY BOHNSACK, Real Living Lifestyles
F
inally! The day has come, and we have turned the corner. As real estate professionals, we look for three consecutive months of improvement before we declare a shift in the market. We are excited to share we have hit that 3 month period. Even more, we’re excited that we are moving in the right direction. The months of March, April and May were extremely strong in Del Sol with a 31% increase in sale prices in Del Mar and a 23% increase in Solana Beach, compared to May 2012, which is the largest increase we have seen in over seven years. Homes have consistently come on the market, but the buyer demand escalated at an exponential rate, which fueled the Sold to List difference to increase by 9.5%. The average market time was only 11 days for homes that were listed within the last 90 days. We haven’t seen sellers this optimistic in years. The average price per square foot in Del Mar has remained consistent and Solana Beach has increased 54% compared to 2012. In all of San Diego, we have seen a 23% increase from last year and sellers are finally able to make the next move. Most importantly, we are in the age of hyper local markets. Hyper local means, for example, east side versus west side will have different market times, and different average sale prices. The best way to find out how your home fits in today’s market is to have a customized market appraisal. As your real estate professionals, we are happy to do this for you to keep you updated on the current value of your most important investment. ¢ Data from Sandicor MLS.

Revolutionizing Football Culture
The Heads Up FootballSM Program Creates a Safer Playing Environment
T
by AMY LEHRER
he national governing body of American football and the official youth development partner of the NFL, USA Football, created Heads Up FootballSM, the new standard for teaching football fundamentals. Fully supported by the NFL, the NFL foundation, the NCAA and the National Federation of State High School Associations, the Heads Up FootballSM program is revolutionizing football culture. Clare Graff, a publicity manager for the NFL, explained, “The number one goal of Heads Up Football is to provide our kids the safest possible environment to learn the fundamentals of the game.” Leagues wishing to become Heads Up Certified must adopt five tenets: educate coaches, learn how to recognize and respond to concussions, teach proper tackling techniques, ensure proper equipment fitting and maintenance and comply with designated safety protocols. Every coach must take USA Football’s nationally accredited Level 1 Coaching Education course, and coaches, parents and players must attend clinics prior to and during each season to learn concussion protocols. Then, during the season through a series of non-contact and low-contact drills to assure safety and proper skill progression, players learn tackling fundamentals that include keeping their heads up and out of the line of
contact. Learning correct tackling techniques early enables athletes to build muscle memory, which will protect them as they progress. Coaches, parents and players are included in all training sessions so that everyone can help make football safer. NFL ambassadors to the program like San Diego native Eric Allen – a former American football cornerback who played for three NFL teams – work alongside players, parents and coaches to promote safe ways to learn football fundamentals. The ambassadors enjoy supporting their communities by making football safer and more efficient than it was when they played. Pediatric Neuropsychologist, Dr. Gerard Gioia, expressed his support by stating, “I am particularly impressed by the Heads Up Tackling program’s emphasis on proper body positioning. I believe training of our coaches in these ‘head safe’ techniques, together with an understanding of the negative consequences of multiple blows to the head, will better protect our athletes.” In 2013 alone, more than 1,300 youth leagues have adopted Heads Up FootballSM for the 2013 season, and the goal is to bring it to all 10,000 youth football leagues across the United States. And due to the safety benefits and support offered, some high school football programs may adopt and endorse Heads Up Football as early as this season. ¢

:::: orthodontics profile
I
221 Main St #100, Vista, Ca 92084
have been a consultant for many years for several orthodontic manufacturing companies. Over these years I have developed or assisted in the development of many products. As of January 1, 2013 I have joined Forestadent Orthodontics, Kristi - Wearing Clear Braces & Wires a family owned company which has been in business for more than 100 years. Why is this news potentially important to you? On May 7 we introduced several new brackets (braces). One is an esthetic ceramic (clear) bracket that is bonded to the outside of the teeth. The other is a small lingual bracket that attaches to the inside of the teeth and is invisible. This invisible bracket is capable of correcting minor crowding and rotation problems in a very short period of time (eight weeks to six months). As with any new product, a relatively large group of examples with this Roncone GPS Appliance is needed in order to train orthodontists around the world. Just as we have in past years, we are offering substantial discounts to those who participate in this educational process.
