Course Abstract :
“Designers must be willing to get their hands dirty and play in order to discover the unexpected.”
Course Code : GPDC505
Industrial Designers have CMF responsibilities in an industry as it is an integral part of the product and its first interface with the potential buyer. As CMF provide look and feel of the product through various senses, it is imperative for the Industrial Designers to develop thorough understanding and application of CMF to enhance perceived emotive and functional value of the product.
Course Title : Color, Material, Finish and Trend Studies Course Category : L-T-P-0 Credit Distribution : 1-1-1-0 Duration (hours) : 90
Objectives / Intended outcomes of learning : • To develop an appreciation of simultaneous evolution of a product form with its skin
becoming an integral part.
• To develop ability to research on trends in evolution of the product surface/skin historically. • To research on materials and processes R&D, their analysis and apply this learning
strategically and creatively to design new product skins/surfaces.
• To develop understanding of reproduction and post-production processes / technologies.
To study diverse range of surface morphing processes like chrome-plating, sand-blasting, tampon–printing, film-transfer, hydro-Graphics, textured-painting, powder-coating, anodizing, chemical vapor deposition, vacuum metalizing, flocking etc.

Queen are a British rock band formed in London in 1970. Their classic line-up was Freddie Mercury (lead vocals, piano), Brian May (guitar, vocals), Roger Taylor (drums, vocals), and John Deacon (bass).
Their earliest works were influenced by progressive rock, hard rock, and heavy metal, but the band gradually ventured into more conventional and radiofriendly works by incorporating further styles, such as arena rock and pop-rock. Mercury chose the name “Queen” for the new band. He later said, “It’s very regal obviously, and it sounds splendid. It’s a strong name, very universal and immediate. I was certainly aware of the gay connotations, but that was just one facet of it.”At about the same time, he legally changed his surname, Bulsara, to Mercury.
11
Mercury designed the band’s logo, known as the “Queen crest”.The logo combines the zodiac signs of the four band members: two lions for Deacon and Taylor (sign Leo), a crab for May (Cancer), and two fairies for Mercury (Virgo). The lions embrace a stylized letter Q, the crab rests atop the letter with flames rising directly above it, and the fairies are each sheltering below a lion A crown is shown inside the Q, and the whole logo is overshadowed by an enormous phoenix. The Queen crest bears a passing resemblance to the Royal coat of arms of the United Kingdom, particularly with the lion supporters. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Queen_(band)

Anodizing is accomplished by immersing the aluminum into an acid electrolyte bath and passing an electric current through the medium . Later dyes are added.
Powder coating is a finishing process in which dry, free-flowing, thermoplastic or thermoset powder material is applied to a surfaced.
It is produced by polishing the metal with a non-woven abrasive belt or pad , grit belt.
Wood stain is a type of paint used to color wood.

Printing technique that involves applying a metallic or pigmented foil to a surface.
Printing process that can transfer a 2-D image onto a 3-D object. It involves an image being transferrer from a silicone pad onto a substrate.
The process of adding a pattern to the molding surface of a mold. This allows the mold to impress that pattern on each molded part.
