THEME 1 IMAGE DATA PRODUCTION

INTRODUCTION

We often hear people say that they seldom reopen the images after shooting and saving in computer if there is no absolute need. It is true that we take tons of pictures for personal record or commercial use each and every day. Believe it or not, images saved in hard drives will most likely turn into digital trash. Given the digital convenience and availability of large storage, ordinary people are shooting more pictures, doing postediting and finally putting them online. For one satisfying picture, they might have tried hundreds of times.

PROJECT 1 The Lament of Mass Production in Photography

PROJECT 1 THE LAMENT OF MASS PRODUCTION IN PHOTOGRAPHY

INSPIRATION Many of Martin Parr's photographs are very interesting. He makes his photographs strong statements about society in a very humorous way and shows the absurdity of contemporary consumption society in the form of black humor. Inspired by Martin Parr's photography, I imitated his shooting techniques and used flash light to capture the moment when tourists took pictures in the sightseeing attractions. I also tried to produce a thought-provoking effect while expressing a sense of humor through my photographs.

LOCATION: Singapore EQUIPMENT: Photography: Nikon D300S POST PROCESSING: Adobe Lightroom, Photoshop and Illustrator DESIGN PARTNER- Guangwei Zhu

ILLUSTRATION: In this set of works, by using the clipping and pasting techniques, I combine photography with design to intuitively show the whole process from shooting photos to storing them in a computer. The characters in the works are people I captured in the tourist attractions, and behind those people are data of photos. Nowadays, people store a large amount of photos in the computer database just like throwing garbage.

PROJECT 1 THE LAMENT OF MASS PRODUCTION IN PHOTOGRAPHY

TRANSLATION As you can see, my works involve screenshot of the question I ask in Zhihu (an app like Quora), from which I tried to explore the real significance of photography and aroused the concern of many users, and that is exactly the origin of inspiration for this set of works. I try to create it to get people to think and reflect on the influence of digital media on us.

What is the Significance of Taking Photos? I love photography, and taking photos is an indispensable part of my life. But I am always puzzled about the real significance of photography and have been wondering why people take photos. Sometimes, I feel confused when I deal with great photos I took as it seems like I have nowhere to place them. A majority of people like taking a lot of photos during their trip. However, they will just store them into computers just letting them become rubbish when they come back home. Therefore, Have you ever thought about the real significance of taking photos? ----------------updated on Sep.02, 2016------------followed by 2780 users 20 comments

The works are being shown at Mirror Metropolis Bi-City Photography Exhibition in Shenzhen and Taipei recently. I sticked a QR-code below my works, which is linked to the page of the Zhihu website, where people could browse through the answers of the previous question and share their ideas with me and others.

THEME 2 FEMALE'S ROLE PLAYING

INTRODUCTION

I first encountered the feminist theory in the classroom during my time as an exchange student in the UK. I discovered a new world through the study of Cindy Sherman's untitled film series and academic research on Laura Mulvey's Male Gaze Theory. Prior to this, I never noticed that the images of females both in film works and real life were so protean and contradictory, while males' images were generally more conventional. Under the male-dominated social circumstances, I found that women are often in two states: one is strong resistance, and the other is unconditional obedience. In this project, I set up certain plots by taking the approach of film's visualization before my creation, and describe the story of three women from different regions of the world.

PROJECT 2 Leaving (Collaborative Project)

PROJECT 2 LEAVING

BRIEF INTRODUCTION This project is a 23-minute micro-film named Leaving. It was my graduation project, completed through the collaboration of of six people. We each took part as director, producer, deputy director, photographer, video editor and screenwriter. I was responsible for taking photography in this crew. I also selected two posters and some stills from the film. LOCATION: Shantou, China EQUIPMENT: Sony A7S

PROJECT 2 LEAVING

ILLUSTRATION: Poster Design I designed two scenes for the film poster. One is the protagonist A Chun leaning on the door, the other is her sitting inside the house looking at the light thoughtfully. I think that the state of being alone is very real and powerful, which brings a poetic sense of loneliness to the whole picture. The design of the poster aims to stimulate curiosity of the audience.

PROJECT 2 LEAVING

ILLUSTRATION Film Stills The film is an adaptation of realistic themes. I hope to take advantage of my lens to create a sense of reality. Viewers can bring themselves into the picture more intensively either from the angle of shooting or the movement of lens.

PROJECT 2 LEAVING

The story takes place in the winter, which is why I chose the cold blue as the film's main color and soft light as the main light source to indicate the tragic experience of the protagonist, therefore to render a more intense feeling between people’s relationships in the village.

PROJECT 4 The Girl Delusion

PROJECT 4 THE GIRL DELUSION

INSPIRATION I was inspired by Cindy Sherman’s photography Untitled series. The greatest feature of Cindy's works is that she plays a variety of female roles herself. In terms of clothing props, dress and lens language, her works are just like story-telling dramas. I learned from the way in which she took photography by using light and performance, and took a series of pictures under exaggerated colorful light by dressing myself in different female roles. Here, I selected one of my works, which shows a sad girl who seems to have something on her mind.

PROJECT 4 THE GIRL DELUSION

LOCATION:Birmingham,UK EQUIPMENT:Canon 6D ILLUSTRATION: This set of photos was taken by a self-timer while I myself played the role of a lost adolescent girl who just entered into adulthood. In the pictures, the girl is either sitting alone in a corner or lying on a sofa. She is gazing out of the picture frame and seems to be sad and preoccupied by some troubles. In this project, I chose red lights, blue lights and spotlights to render the scene, creating a sense of gloomy and dizziness as these three are similar to neon lights in a bar, which is a world filled with adults. I tried to make the scenes into a state of great disorder so that it can leave people a sense of self-degradation.

PROJECT 3 MASK

PROJECT 3 MASK

INSPIRATION The creation of this work was also inspired by Cindy ShermanďźŒespecially her series works Untitled Film Still. Many of her works expressed the loneliness and struggle of women. Therefore, I tried to show two contrasting sides of a girl and the contradictory state of her mind.

PROJECT 3 MASK

LOCATION:Birmingham,UK EQUIPMENT: Canon 6D ILLUSTRATION: Due to instinctive self-protection, office ladies tend to dress themselves as devils or vicious characters to give people a sense of distance and authority. However, when they return home, they will take off their heavy coats and just lie down on the bed. At home, they just act like young girls and put all things in the workplace behind themselves, and immerse themselves into makeup, snacks, clothing and cooking. Their lives at home are no longer as meticulous and well-organized as in the workplace. This theme will touch the softest part of the heart of a professional female. In this project, in order to better show the difference in between, I put on a wig on the girl at home to create a cuter image, in sharp contrast to her image in the workplace.
