detailed but simpler version of the item by using shading and shadowing to create depth and layers in the sketch.
The first step that was undertaken in order to complete the projections was to photograph the croissant in the photo studio, as well as scan the base of the croissant in order to be able to scale the rest of the photos. By doing this the photos and sketches would all be the same sizr. Both the photos and the scans were also photoshopped to remove the background, brighten the pictures and lines on the photos in order to ease the tracing process and therefore create clarity in the sketches both pencil and pen.
TRACING - PEN:
After creating the pencil trace a similar set was created, however instead of using pencils this time Uni Pin fineliner pens were used. This created a sharper and more defined depiction of the croissant. However due to the nature of the drawing tools used to create these tracing using shadowing was not possible. Instead a techniques called hatching is used. Ny having the hatching lines closer together the section can look darker, and by spreading the lines further apart the section will look lighter. This creates a more dramatic and crisp tracing of the croissant.

CREATING AN AXONOMETRIC DRAWING:
AXONOMETRIC PROJECTION:
In order to create the axonometric drawing the croissant was cut into 4 sections (see the cuts
The final step was the creation of the axonometric projection of the croissant. It was at this

completed by using the measurements and scale from the first steps as well as the grid work from the sectors (which were scanned to keep them to scale) and then drawing three different sets of grids at 45 degree and 90 degree angles.
By doing this the once flat photos and sketches become a 3D shell or representation of the outside of the object.
THE GRID: After tracing the segments, the next step was to create a grid over the three cut out sectors. The grid created was a 1cm x1cm grid that was then placed over the pen tracing on another piece of tracing paper. Each time a line of the out line crossed the grid and ‘x’ was marked. This would help in placing the sectors into the projection while keeping the scale, and shape true to the orrigenal croissant.
FINAL THOUGHTS AND REFLECTIONS: By learning these techniques I was able to create a 3D axonomentric projection of the croissant. This meant that I was able to have a deeper and greater understanding of how the structure could be shown/represented using hand drawing and projection techniques to show different aspects and angles of he object as well as textures in both 2D and 3D. This skill will be good for expressing ideas.

NEW MARIO WORLD
CREATING THE AXONOMETRIC PROJECTIONS:
In order to create a New Mario world 2 snapshots of a Mario world was assigned to us. These two images of the Mario world then needed to be projected into an axonometric projection and then layered to create a new 3D version of the world. The world then had to be scanned and touched up in photoshop before putting the new world into Adobe Illustrator in order to make the lines look cleaner and match the colours and make the world look like a Mario world and note just a sketch or drawing anymore.
SKETCHING TOOLS
MARIO WORLD SNAPSHOTS: In order to create the axonometric projection, the following materials were required: T-square, set-square with 45 degree angle, Pencil (4H, 2H, HB and 2B), Finliner pens (0.1, 0.2, 0.4), eraser, pencil sharpener, and masking tape. Then in order to create the projection every part of the

the back one instead. As the other shot had less trees and so the small details from this world will still be seen. The tree work on this sketch turned out well in the end. However the pipework turned out a little distorted, and the star with the pencil looks a little messy.
MARIO WORLD 2 This world was a little more challenging in the smaller bushes and pipe detailing, however overall I am happy with how they turned out. It also included more curves in the ground, as well as a visible gap half way through the world. This will be interesting in how they are projected and joined onto the rest of the world

COMPLETED WORLD: ADOBE ILLUSTRATOR
FINAL NEW MARIO WORLD:
The final steps were to scan the fineline trace and clean it up on photoshop. From there the world was put into Adobe Illustrator where the fineline trace was used as a template to create the final world in colour. In order to create the world I had to start at the back of the world and work my way forward. This meant that I could take shortcuts on any of he parts of the world and work my way forward. This meant that I could take shortcuts on any of the parts of the world, that is not part of the visable world. Especilly because when you use layers on Illustrator, as long as you don’t change the opaqueness of the front layers, you won’t be able to see anything covered by a layer in front.
COLOUR SWATCHES: When it comes to choosing the colours for the Mario world choosing most of them was easy. This was because I took swatches from the Mario world in order to perfectly match the colouts and give the new 3D world the same feel as the orrigenal traditional 2D Mario world. However with some of the new items that were aded into the world I came up with my own colours. I decided to pick out bright cartoon like colours to try and make them fit into the 3D world.
LINE WEIGHTS: Deciding in the weight of the outline was also an important decision. This is because if the lineweight is too thick, then the world will look too cartoon like, and a lot of the detail in the line work will be lost. However if the linework is too thin then the linework will get too lost, and you won’t be able to see the shapes and the linework clearly.
FINAL THOUGHTS AND REFLECTION: The overall process of creating this new world was a long process, however it taught me a lot in how to turn a 2D world into a 3D space, and then to play with layers, colours and swatches in Adobe Illustrator, The addition of colour and shading that was created in Illustrator really helped the world have the feel of the Mario graphics, and while at first I was not 100% convinced about the colours used in the Mario world, after about half way though the Illustrator process when the world was starting to come together that point of view changed. It was also intereting to play around with different gradients in order to create reflections in the water and on the pipes.

TRIANGULAR:

While this pattern is very simple it is also effective in the way that the pannels themselves seem to connect together
The paper landscape that needed to be created was taken from a piece of landscape from

feasable.
BOXPATTERN:
TOPOGRAPHY OF TASMAINIA:
This patternis one of the more simple designs in the way that it only has two types of lines. Yet because of the placement and frequency it still has an effective and busy feel to it. I like how this pattern proved that you can produce an interesting pattern with simple techniques if it is placed in the right way. I however felt that I wanted to challenge myslef more with different types of shapes that could be echoed in the 3D part of the model.
WAVE PATTERN:
The pattern creates a sense of height within the 2D surface as the lines through the horizontal wave form makes it seem as if the mesh is bending up and down. While the illusion created by this pannel is very fun and interesting, I think that repricating it in 3D form and having so much of it could be overwhelming for the viewer and so I may want to try a similar effect but on a different scaale and with different styles
2D PANELLING PATTERNS:
DENSE PATTERN:
From the topography of the piece of Tasmainia the next step was to experiment with different types of predetermined 2D patterns to see how the pannels and meshes are created and how the different patterns work together before creating my own.
This pattern visually is on of the more complicated patterens due to the different types of lines used. It creates a very similar effect to the triangular pattern in that different shapes build up and chatch the eye to

VARIABLE 2D PATTERN DEVELOPMENT:
SIMPLIFYING THE PATTERN:
After looking at how to create a 2D pattern from the Tasmainia mesh my own pattern needed
While I loved how the first pattern looked, I decided that it was very busy and would be very

With this idea, I discovered that star tool on Rhino and decided to play around with a couple of different options, and how they fit together and within each other. The shapes used in this pattern were: - Square - 4-point star - Octagon - 8-point star

I was really happy with the final 2D mesh. Its simplified, but still very effective. 9

FIRST PANNELING IDEA:
SIMPLIFIED PANNELING IDEA:
I really wanted there to be a connectio between the 2D panneling pattern and the 3D shapes.
I decided that I wanted to keep the 4-pointed star (even though its fold out looks a little

PANNELISED LANDSCAPE:
FINAL LANDSCAPE:
While the landscape could have been printed on thicker paper to hold the structure better, overall I was very happy with the effect created by the different types of 3D panels. As well as how the folds of the 2D pannels helped to emphasis the different shapes that were sed to created the model.
CLOSE UP OF 2D PANNELS: I unortunatlely took a bit of a shortcut when printing out and putting the 2D pannels together as I printed them out in long strip with only a few tabs so while the pattern looks good there are some clear lines between the blocks whcih breaks up the pattern.
While this was very effective in saving time. Visually was not the best idea. I also ecided to fold along the lines to make the pattern stand out more, and make the panneling look more interesting than if it was left flat.
CLOSE UP OF 3D PANNELS: I was really happy with how the 3D pannels came together, and I fell like I cut them out and glued them together neatly. However

HIDDEN CITIES: THEODORA For this project a story was assigned to each of us. From this story was had to create the city that was within a Rhino version of Melbourne Univercitys’ “Old Quad”. This strengthened and expanded my knowledge on how to create structures using Rhino, and then taught me how to clean up images on photoshop and Illustrator so that they can be inserted into Rhino.
THE STORY:
INTERPRETING THE STORY: The story of Theodora is a sad and upsetting story about people destroying any species of fauna that was different. However there is some light at the end of the story, where the different species are coming back to the city in secret. Staying hidden from the people who previously hunted them down, blissfully unaware of the animals comnig back.
I decided that I really liked this part of the story. The sense of rebellion and new life, for me was the part of the story that I really wanted to capture when creating this city. But at the same time I wanted the creature to be hidden, like a world within a world. They were coming back, but more cautiously. They were there hiding and biding time, watching the unaware people unitll both sides are ready to meet again. New generations who don’t remember the pain and cruelty caused in the past, who can learn to accept differances. As cheesy and as hopefull as that sounds, this was what I thought about when I finished the story, and that’s what I wanted to capture in the city. A city of caution, and a city of hope.

BASILISK: When I think of Basilisks what I generally think about is the giant snake from the second Harry Potter book. However for this world I wanted to use a couple of smaller and less threatening snakes that were hiding around the base of the columns so that they could watch the poeple, but stay

GARGOYLE: This was the first creature that I wanted to put into the scene. I know that it wasn’t listed in the creatures that were coming back. it would be more obvious that the creatures were no identical. This would also allow me to have the creatures interact with each other, and make it look like they’re flying and moving differently.
14
THEODORA:
After placing the charecters into the world in different hidden and not so hidden places I had to look at how the city would work and how the charecters would interact. For me the main thing was camera angles. I wanted to be able to capture the feel of the world. Od the hiding, the hesitance, and the curiosity. After that I thought about where the crouds of people would be standing, and how large they would be. From there I looked at where the creatures would be looking and how the gaze would sit, either as a stare or a glance, or ignoring the crounds completely. Another element I wanted to include was the passage of time showing the creatures growing and agin. The one thing that wasn’t in the provided key was the movement of flight for the harpies, especially as this was one of the reasons I wanted to put them into the world in the first place. I think that the axonometirc turned out well. However when ir was turned into a 2D axonometric projection not all the lines came out. However the main structure is still there, and I think the details from the key capture the energy of the city pretty well.
15
