We offer outstanding additional support for our students and have been awarded the BDA quality mark for dyslexia.

Work experience is a vital part of your time at college.

We hold regular one-to-one meetings and tutorials with all of our students to talk about their next steps, and discuss a plan on how they're going to get there.

We have been recognised for our commitment and continual support of young people with dyslexia and our approach to learning that embraces diversity. Our specialist team can also support you with: • • • • • • • • • • •

Not only will you gain new skills and experience of the working environment, it will also help to give you an edge when applying to jobs. Our specialist team will encourage you to gain at least one work placement during your time with us. Last year, 96% of our students successfully complete at least one work placement and found it a valuable experience. Some of our students were even offered a job (full-time and part-time) at the end of their placement.

Our courses are endorsed by local companies We're very proud of the fantastic relationships we have with local companies. We work closely with lots of different organisations, across a variety of industries, to help us provide the right mix of education for the workforce of the future. University Centre Hastings Officially opening September 2017, we will be offering a range of degree courses taught by university lectures at our Station Plaza and Ore Valley campuses. Boasting brand new facilities and equipment, the University Centre Hastings offers local students fantastic opportunities. Higher Apprenticeships Apprenticeships have changed! With larger businesses investing in Apprentices you can now choose to study an Apprenticeship in almost any industry, gaining the equivalent of a Degree or Master's Level qualification.

What is Further Education (FE)?

Which qualification is right for my son/daughter?

FE covers a wide range of education which goes beyond what has been achieved in primary and secondary education. Typically, FE includes: A-Levels, Apprenticeships, Vocational qualifications, and Foundation Learning. It also provides the foundation to Higher Education including Degrees and Higher Apprenticeships.

There are lots of qualifications to choose from at Sussex Coast College Hastings. Knowing which one is right can be a tricky decision. How will I be involved?

How does my son/ daughter apply to college?

You will be kept informed of your child’s progress through regular Parent Consultation Evenings. We also host a Parents’ Voice session where you will be invited to give us your views on all aspects of college life. You can also contact tutors directly to discuss any issues during term time.

Your child can apply for more than one course and have more than one interview. There are 4 ways to apply, with the most popular being through UCAS Progress (through school). The other ways are online, by post or in person. We except applications until September.

Can I visit the college before my son/daughter applies? We have open evenings throughout the year for you to find out what our College has to offer. These events give you the opportunity to explore the campuses, check out the facilities, meet the tutors and talk to current students.

What happens at the start of college? Our Induction Days provide a further opportunity for students to have a successful transition from school to college. Students are provided with the opportunity to tour the college buildings, meet other students, and get to know tutors and other members of staff who are on hand to support their learning.

Is there any support available for my son/ daughter at college? At Sussex Coast College Hastings we take supporting your child very seriously. The specialist Additional Learning Support team work closely with students. There are also Intensive Personal Advisers for students to discuss any personal matters with. Your child will be allocated a personal tutor who will be the key point of contact for both you and them as they progress on their journey with the College. We also offer financial bursaries to support students to get to College and provide funds for materials and resources needed to succeed once they are here (bursaries are dependent on household income).

ABOUT THIS CAMPUS Less than a mile from our Station Plaza Campus, Ore Valley Campus is one stop on the train from Hastings town centre. Our Ore Valley campus was purpose built to house our 7,000 square metres of realistic working environments, workshops and ‘live build’ areas.

ABOUT THIS CAMPUS

TRAVELLING TO COLLEGE: There are multiple bus stops along The Ridge, which are within walking distance to our Training Centre.

The Training Centre offers hands-on training and qualifications in all aspects of vehicle maintenance and repair. Supported by Snap-On Tools, the centre has all the latest equipment needed for you to train in the industry, by working in a realistic working environment. Located on the Northridge Industrial Estate, it has IMI (Institute of Motor Industry) accreditation and approval to deliver various levels of Motor Vehicle Maintenance and Repair programmes and apprenticeships at Levels 2 and 3.

The Training Academy at Station Plaza is an undiscovered gem fitted with a sauna, Jacuzzi, massage beds and all the latest equipment from Wella. Both salons are open to the public offering a range of hair and beauty treatments at discounted prices.

Coast Restaurant is a fine dining experience in modern and intimate surroundings at our Station Plaza campus. Hospitality and Catering students prepare, cook and serve dishes under professional supervision as part of their training, using seasonal and local ingredients wherever possible.

Based at Station Plaza, the art shop stocks a wide range of materials including books, canvases, paper and pens. It also provides a bespoke framing service where students receive a 10% discount.

We have over 1,300 Macs, PCs and laptops for student use. The college is fully networked, with high-speed internet, online study resources and industry-standard software. There is wireless internet access throughout both campuses. Students can access their College email and shared area from home, via the college website.

Our fully-equipped gym is located on the first floor at Station Plaza and offers students and members of the public somewhere close to town to workout at a reduced price.

Both Station Plaza and Ore Valley offer stateof-the-art equipment in their spacious LRCs. Trained staff offer help with proof-reading, presentation preparation, research and writing skills to develop and improve your independent study skills. These courses are designed for those who want to study for a degree but have never found the right opportunity. Many people across the UK study Access to Higher Education courses to help them gain the entry requirements to study at University.

We have lots of part-time courses for adults to enrol on. Whether you want a new qualification for your CV or just a leisure course to start a hobby, we’ll have a course for you!

Supported Education

English for Speakers of Other Languages

Overseas Student Courses

We provide courses for those people who are non-native English speakers, living in the UK and who want to improve their English Language skills. Our Entry Level to Level 2 courses will teach skills in reading, writing, listening and speaking, useful for everyday life in the UK.

International Students can study a range of qualifications with us including IELTS, A-Levels, Access courses, Vocational Diplomas as well as Degrees. We even have a School of English where students can study English and learn new language skills.

We provide personalised learning programmes for young people who have severe learning difficulties and/ or disabilities to develop greater independence and employability skills. These courses are taught by specialist staff in specialist environments.

Degrees and other Higher Education Courses We offer a range of award winning BA(Hons) and BSc(Hons) courses for you to choose from, as well as an option of a more practical HNC/HND programme, at our new University Centre Hastings.

Did you achieve a Grade 3 or lower at GCSE in Maths and/ or English?

Are you 16-18 years old and have completed your GCSEs?

If yes, you will be automatically enrolled on to either Functional Skills or GCSE to study English and/or maths, alongside your chosen subject.

A-Level Courses

Maths and English GCSE

Don’t worry if you don’t achieve a grade 4 at GCSE in English and/or maths at school, we can help you. If you achieved a grade 3 at GCSE in either English or maths you will be automatically enrolled onto our GCSE programme. Our specialist tutors will help you achieve a higher grade with Sussex Coast College Hastings.

Functional Skills

If you achieved below a grade 3 in your English and maths GCSE, Functional Skills will become a part of student life to help you achieve a higher grade. The government developed the Functional Skills study programme to help you achieve the fundamental skills in English and maths to help you work in a business environment. The skills taught are designed to be used in real-life situations. Functional Skills is a standalone qualification.

If you’re academic, enjoy studying and thrive under exam conditions then A-Levels might be for you. We have a suite dedicated to A-Levels and understand their value in helping you to get a place at University.

Vocational Courses

Perhaps you have a clear idea about what you want to do in the future; taking one of our vocational courses could help you to get there. You’ll be able to learn all the skills you need to work in your chosen industry, while being assessed through course work and practical tasks. You can build up a vocational qualification from entry level to the highest, Level 3. A Level 3 vocational qualification is the equivalent to 3 A-Levels meaning that with the right grades you can progress onto university.

If you’re a hands-on type of learner then you may want to get stuck in with one of our apprenticeships. The beauty of an apprenticeship is that it gives you the opportunity to earn a wage while you learn. You will study at College for one day a week while working for the other four days in one of over 1,500 potential job roles. You have to be at least 16 to apply for an Apprenticeship.

Do you want to reconnect with education? The Prince’s Trust Team Programme

Are you aged 16-25 and not currently in full-time employment, education or training? Our Prince’s Trust Team Programme is a 14-week course that helps you prepare for the world of work by giving you the experience and skills needed for the work place. You will complete a two-week work experience placement in an area of your choice, giving you work experience to put on your CV and talk about during job interviews. Students regularly progress into work or find fulltime courses to study here at SCCH.

Inclusive Pathways

Our Inclusive Pathways course is designed to reconnect you with education and training. The programme aims to support and build your confidence so that you can progress onto mainstream college courses. No formal qualifications are necessary to apply for this course as we will work with you to develop a tailored plan to help you to improve your maths and English.

Involved Our College is a very different environment from school. We have a dedicated Student Support Team to guide you through college life and enrich your college experience. You can get involved with: Get Active The Get Active Programme offers a wide variety of sports, fitness and dance activities for students of all ages. Usually held at Station Plaza or Horntye Sports Park, activities include Circuit Training, Badminton, Football, Netball, Table Tennis, Zumba and Yoga. It doesn’t stop with taking part either; we help students get qualified on National Governing Body coaching schemes, to further enhance their employability prospects within the sporting/health world.

Student Union Run by the students, for the students! By becoming a Sussex Coast College Student you will automatically become part of our Student Union. Our Student Union is run by our elected Student President who partakes in monthly Committee meetings with our Governors and Principal. The Union works to improve all aspects of College life for all students. Whether that’s through social events, political campaigns or raising awareness for local or national issues, our union at SCCH is here for you.

So how do I become part of the Union? It’s simple! Everyone who is a current student is automatically part of the Union but if you feel you want to be more proactive within the Union, then you could stand for an executive role on the committee. This is a great opportunity where you get to build up confidence and develop various skills in teamwork, leadership and organisation. In addition to the Students’ Union, you could apply to become a Student Governor. This is where you will sit alongside the Student President on the Board of Governors at Corporation meetings and will be able to give firsthand insight into the experience of being a student at SCCH.

Student Ambassadors

Whatever your goals, the Get Active Programme will help you achieve them.

Becoming a Student Ambassador is your chance to tell others about your time at SCCH.

Duke of Edinburgh Award

You can apply to become a SCCH Ambassador and take part in speaking at school assemblies, supporting at College events and undertaking surveys and feedback sessions.

We have a long and successful history of running the Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award and will again be running the popular course starting in September.

Student Voice

You will achieve your Award by completing a personal programme of activities in four sections - Volunteering, Physical, Skills, and Expedition.

Student Voice within the college ensures students views are heard and acted upon.

You’ll find yourself helping people and the community, getting fitter, developing skills, and going on an expedition! Ask your tutor for more information.

Health and Well-being

We have a student first focus and want to give you our full support before, during and after your time at College.

At college, our Additional Learning Support team can help give you the best chance of success.

We have a dedicated Student Services team available to provide up-to-date information on all of our courses, from academic, vocational and work-related opportunities to help you make the right choice about your future.

We recognise that each student has very different needs and will provide you with the support and encouragement you need.

We offer a wide range of health services including: • Free contraception and pregnancy tests • Relationship advice • Help with drug and alcohol related issues • Anger management • Healthy living advice • Stress management

Our Student Advisors provide impartial information about training and educational options for all students. They can also help with: • Applying for courses • Arranging taster days and visits to College • Sharing the experiences of students • Information about course requirements • Career opportunities

Intensive Personal Advisors The College IPAs provide support for any student who may be experiencing problems with social, emotional and personal issues. They can also provide practical support e.g. housing and benefit issues and concerns.

Our professionally trained and experienced team will work with you to help remove barriers that prevent you from learning. Come and talk to us about any learning needs you may have, for example if you have any concerns with/about: • Support during your transition to College • Autism • Dyslexia • Mental health and well-being • Deaf or hard of hearing • Physical disabilities • Learning disabilities • Blind or partially sighted • Exam access arrangements • Specialist equipment • Reader, note-taker or prompt

If you need help or more information about any of these areas, ask your tutor to refer you to the Student Support Team.

Safeguarding We work closely with the East Sussex Local Safeguarding Children Board to make sure that all young people are protected from any kind of abuse. We have a designated team of staff to protect our students.

Help to get to college

Childcare Support

We expect our staff and students to respect diversity within the college and community.

As part of the bursary, students are able to apply for travel assistance if they are ineligible for or have been refused, other travel support from Local Authorities. For more information, please visit www.sussexcoast.ac.uk/get-to-college.

Care to Learn Care to Learn is a government scheme providing assistance with the cost of childcare for those students aged under 20 at the start of their course.

We recognise the value that disability, gender, race, sexuality, faith, culture, age and background brings to our lives and work. We are committed to ensuring equality of opportunity for all who learn and work at the College. We strive to produce a work and learning environment that is safe and free from all forms of discrimination. As a student it is your responsibility to treat others with respect.

16 – 18 Student Support Funds Young people who need some financial support to help them study at College can apply to the 16 -18 Student Bursary Fund.

19+ Student Support Funds The 19+ Student Support Fund is a discretionary fund for students aged 19 and over at the start of the academic year. Financial assistance may be provided to cover the cost of travelling to college, and in exceptional circumstances, fees.

Free Breakfast/Meal

Under the Guaranteed Bursary Fund, students are eligible for up to £1,200 towards the cost of coming to College, if they are: • Young people in care • Leaving the care of their local authority • Those in receipt of Income Support in their own right • Disabled young people in receipt of both Disability Living Allowance (DLA) and Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) in their own right

All students aged 16-18 are able to access a free breakfast. Students can enjoy breakfast between 8:15-8:45am at both Station Plaza and Ore Valley.

Other students under the age of 19 are able to receive support to assist with costs associated with their course such as books, materials and equipment if their household income is £26,001 or below.

Childcare provision must be OFSTED registered and financial assistance can be provided up to a maximum of £160 per week. Application forms are available from Student Central and online at www.gov.uk. 20+ Childcare Support Fund This fund is available for those aged over 20 at the start of the academic year. It provides assistance with the cost of OFSTED registered childcare for timetabled hours, term time only. Students are expected to contribute towards the cost of their childcare and if they are entitled to Early Years Funding, this is expected to be used to fund timetabled hours. Application forms are available from Student Central and online at www.gov.uk.

Students under 19 with a household income of £16,190 or under and in receipt of certain benefits will be eligible for a Further Education Free Meal. All bursary application forms are available on the college website, Student Central (Station Plaza) and reception (Ore Valley).

Work Experience & Employability Skills Work experience is an essential part of your time at Sussex Coast College. During your study programme you will be given the opportunity to gain valuable skills and experience with employers. 96% of our vocational students were successfully placed with an employer last academic year, with feedback confirming they had found their placement very valuable. Work experience is a fantastic way to improve your employability skills, which will help you on your path to having a successful career. We encourage you to source and secure your own work placement in a business or industry that will have a benefit and relevance to your future career plans. Our tutors will be on hand to give you full support in finding a suitable and meaningful placement in an environment you would like to try.

Enterprise We encourage and support you to develop your enterprise skills and talents outside your course. We offer opportunities for you to improve your communication, teamwork, problem-solving and creative skills. You can take part in a range of events and activities including: • Enterprise workshops • Selling your products via the Student Market (in partnership with the University of Brighton) • Master-classes and talks from entrepreneurs and successful business people

Career and Future Planning The College has a dedicated team to offer you the best support and guidance with whatever you decide to do after College. It could be applying to university, looking for employment, volunteering or continuing to study they'll be here to help. Hastings Direct is one of the largest employers in the area and has worked with us for a number of years in offering part-time roles and apprenticeships to our students.

Before deciding what to study with us, research your A-Level subjects and universities you’d like to go to. Some degree courses require certain A-Levels to get on to the course. By doing this you will have a goal to aim for and stay focused. A great website to use is university.which.co.uk.

You’re not the only one! Taking certain facilitating subjects will keep your course options wide open. You can always ask our tutors for advice. Remember it is important to study subjects you are interested in otherwise you may not enjoy your experience.

A Higher Apprenticeship is an alternative to a degree.

We have many students who progress onto our own degree courses. The University Centre Hastings boasts its own facilities on the fifth floor of our Station Plaza Campus as well as an Engineering, Construction and IT wing at our Ore Valley Campus.

Higher Apprenticeships are level 4,5,6 & 7. Higher and degree apprentices typically split their time between college/university and the workplace. Apprentices achieve a full Bachelor’s or Master’s degree as a core component of the apprenticeship. On a Degree Apprenticeship, you will be tested on your academic learning, as well as your wider skills and ability to do the job.

Tutorial System A Sixth Form education requires determination and hard work and we realise that support outside of the classroom is essential to enable you to succeed. When enrolled at the Sixth Form, you will be assigned a tutor. The tutor assigned to you will be aligned with your academic programme, and will therefore be able to support you through your studies.

Academic Support At the Sixth Form we provide academic support in the form of study workshops. These enable you to focus on developing your skills and knowledge in a specific subject area. The workshops tend to be allocated in free periods during the week so that you are able to attend. The Sixth Form works in partnership with the Learning Resource Centre to provide study skills sessions. These sessions focus on developing the transferable skills you need to succeed in examinations, for example focusing on revision methods and examination technique.

Career Development Programme Our Career Development Programme ensures that as well as developing academic excellence, you’ll be able to make informed decisions about your next steps, whether that is into university or into work. The Sixth Form has established contacts with a multitude of employers, from a variety of backgrounds. You can take part in placements in whichever industry you’re interested in. We have opportunities ranging from working in the creative industries here in Hastings, to working in finance in the City of London.

UCAS Application Support After following the Career Development Programme during your first year, you’ll start to have an idea about the type of degree that you want to study. From the end of the first year you will be supported through your UCAS application by your personal tutor. Through our links with the University of Brighton and Compact, you will receive expert support on how to complete your application and also receive information in regards to any other questions you may have about student finance and bursary applications.

Transferable skills are essential in all employment. You may decide to change jobs a number of times during your career, whether it is a change of role or complete change of industry. At the Sixth Form, you’ll learn all the essential skills that employers look for in potential employees. So being flexible and having skills such as attendance and punctuality, good communication skills, and leadership qualities, are essential to ensure employability. As part of the Sixth Form Pathway Plus scheme, not only will you develop these skills you will have the opportunity to learn more about careers and progression within your chosen sector.

Enrichment Activities

Student Council

You have the opportunity to get involved in sports, music, performing arts, work experience programmes and international trips.

Our Student Council allows you to become involved in what happens in the Sixth Form.

Many of these activities will be led by some of our existing students.

Wider Enrichment The wider enrichment programme is where you will develop skills in a specific area of interest. Staff take on responsibility for certain enrichment activities and these include Model United Nations, Stocks and Shares Club, as well as a debating society.

Elected from subject classes, you’ll meet and design the Sixth Form’s activities calendar. Your voice will always be heard with opportunities to comment on the college and the learning environment.

Student Ambassadors Our Ambassador programme is open to all students, giving you the opportunity to act as an ambassador for the College. You’ll be able to add this experience to your CV and UCAS personal statement, as well as getting involved in College and community activities.

The Villiers Park Scholars Programme (VP+) The Sixth Form participates in the Villiers Park Scholars Programme. You will develop confidence and key skills to achieve the exam results needed to gain access to a top university, and thrive once there. If spaces become available at the beginning of the academic year, you maybe selected and involved via the VP+ scheme.

There is a sense of independence and flexibility that allows you to explore your own creativity. I have my own space, can work in whatever media I want to, my tutors are incredibly supportive and everyone gets on so well in the art room. My tutors are very helpful and supportive with my dyslexia too. They are able to give me a high level of individual support, especially with my annotation, which really helps. I’m aiming for a career in graphic design and am looking to go to either the Slade, Goldsmiths, or Glasgow – really high achieving Uni’s – that is where I want to be!

The College is really different to anything we have in Uganda â&#x20AC;&#x201C; it is such a beautiful building, when I first walked in I thought it was a shopping mall! Geography, Economics and English Previous School: Rye College The college is really easy to get to. I live in Peasmarsh, not too far away from the train station and once I get to the other end in Hastings, the station is right next to the College. I definitely enjoy it here and the teachers are great! The class sizes aren’t too crowded which means you get more time with the tutor during and after lessons – more one to one teaching. The teachers are very helpful and very knowledgeable about what they teach. They’re also very good at supporting with assignments and homework, giving you really thorough feedback, which is good and helps so much with your learning and development. It’s also great that College is right next to town, so you can go off at lunch time. I want to go onto university after college and study either Economics or Geography. I’ve got a few places in mind, and hopefully I’ll be able to visit some open days this summer. I want to go into finance and perhaps become a Financial Consultant.

English Language, Literature & Classics Previous School: Claverham You have much more independence at college. The College has really good transport links. I get the train to College and the station couldn’t be any closer. The building is great, nice and new.

The tutors here work ridiculously hard all the time. They are so supportive, helpful and we also have lots of fun inside and outside of class. English language is much more than just reading – we have to be analytical and think more. I find the whole subject fascinating; language change is really interesting because it looks at the more scientific side of the English language, looking into how people learn. I also find language and gender interesting. We’ve had lots of great class discussions about the texts we’ve read around gender and feminism. I want to go to Warwick University to study Creative Writing -I really want to be an author and have already written 3 books. A lot of my inspiration comes from things around me, extracts that I read in class and other books. I tend to write about fantasy and wrote 6 drafts of one book, 80,000 words each time!.

The best thing about the college is that there is always something going on in the Atrium the atmosphere here is great! The jump from school to college is quite difficult, but you will soon get used to it. If you don’t do the work then you will get left behind. I started college with the aim of becoming an engineer. However, after finishing a work placement at an engineering company, I decided it wasn’t for me, so decided to go down the psychology route. I already have an unconditional offer to Roehampton University to study Sports Psychology which I will start this September. But it wasn’t an immediate jump to psychology, it was via statistics. I did another work placement in London and found out that to work for that organisation I didn’t necessarily need a background in statistics, so instead of limiting myself I chose A-Level subjects that I enjoyed, hence psychology. The work experience was really good and very useful. It was something I found myself because I wanted to have something extra on my UCAS application and personal statement for university.

Previous School: Bexhill Academy Studying: Level 3 Art and Design I was really interested in art at school so knew I wanted to study it at college. There is so much more freedom here to look at artists you want to look at, learn about lots of different techniques and mediums such as ceramics and printing – things I’d never done before – which is really cool. I wanted to study purely art – so that is why I chose to study the vocational side of the course, rather than the A-Level route, because I wasn’t interested in studying anything else alongside art. There’s so much to the course – we get to take part in workshops and given briefs within the workshop – so we were learning something new, and then having to apply our learning during projects. My tutor is brilliant. He’s such a good illustrator and has produced some amazing comic strips. He’s so helpful when it comes to giving me pointers with my own illustrations. I’ve applied for Portsmouth University to study illustration – I want to become a commercial illustrator but also a teacher who teaches illustration at a local college- Maybe I will come back to Sussex Coast one day!

While studying here I saw a part-time job as a Claims Advisor advertised at Hastings Direct so I decided to apply for it. The hours were flexible and fitted around my College timetable!

The course is really good. I find it really interesting and I would recommend it to anyone – but you do need to have an interest in business and want to study, otherwise you will find it difficult. You can’t just choose it for the sake of choosing it.

In the summer holidays, I changed my hours to work full-time which also expanded my knowledge as a Claims Advisor and gave me great experience.

I think the BTEC helps you to focus on one subject, rather than choosing 3 or 4 at A-Level. I was also thinking about my longer term future when I chose Business, as I thought having this qualification behind me would be helpful as I’d have good business knowledge, so could be quite dynamic when applying for different jobs. The course gives you a good and wide insight into the world of business. You learn how businesses run and function, and it’s actually a good insight into how the world functions too.

Working in a large company has supported my learning and I’m able to use real life examples in my case studies at College. Hastings Direct also offers real career opportunities if colleagues are thinking about working full-time after College rather than going to university. Although you may start in the contact centre there are other opportunities to progress into different areas such as HR, marketing, and management. Working at Hastings Direct has given me confidence working in different departments; I was able to secure an opportunity to work in HR for work experience, which helped me decide that I wanted to get into HR as a career. I have also received the rising star of the year award and to hear my name being called out gave me such a sense of achievement it was a great motivator. Like

Previous School: Robertsbridge Foundation Construction Skills I chose the Foundation Construction Skills course because I wanted to get an idea of what each area was like, then I can focus on one in particular and hopefully build a career in it. You study each area for a term, we studied carpentry first, got to know all the tools, health and safety and how to put together basic joints; and were set tasks and projects which we had to complete in order to pass the module. Then it was on to bricklaying where we did the same and then finishing off with plumbing and painting and decorating. The teachers are really friendly and they’re easy to get on with. They’re quite straight talking, which is good, because we know what we need to do, so we just get on with tasks. They know a lot about their subject too, and pass on really good tips from where they’ve had years of experience in the industry. They also try to push you and stretch your learning so we’re not just settling down with the basics or the easy stuff – it’s a nice challenge. I want to come back next year and focus on one of the construction areas, quite possibly brickwork as I really enjoyed it. My longer term goal is to get a full time job in the industry, gaining lots of experience and learning as much as I can with them, with the view to starting my own business one day. Like

My tutor is really great. I’ve already been offered some work in Canada so I’ll be moving out there in the next few years and hopefully work out there for a while! This course is very hands-on, and that’s what I enjoy! I think compared to school, College gives you a much more detailed look at the subjects. Just from going from year 1 here, I’ve already learnt so many different cuts and how to join different materials. I really enjoy the practical side of the course, learning different techniques and then being able to go off and practice in the workshop is a great experience. My tutor doesn’t tell you what to do and walk you through it, it's more like he’ll set you a task and then let you figure it out for yourself, so you’re actually putting your mind to it and you’re actually learning, and since he’s been here the carpentry has really improved. We’re doing a project at the moment where we’re designing and building items from recycled wood to then sell to people and raise money for local charities. So from the very start of a product we’re getting involved, from design all the way through to sales. I’ve always been interested in carpentry, even from a young age when I used to build ramps for my BMX, and I thought I’d go to college and learn how to do it properly and get a qualification in it. A lot of people I know came here and did carpentry last year and they recommended it to me. The tutors here are great. They’re very interactive and they’ll always be available to help or talk to you if you need it, not necessarily carpentry, they’re really good people to talk to. I work part -time at the moment, so after this year I’m hoping to go on and do an Apprenticeship with the company I work for doing a Level 2. I think an Apprenticeship will suit me because I prefer to be out on site, and also get paid. After the Apprenticeship I hope to stay with the company I work for and build up my experience. Like

Previous School: St.Leonards Academy Studying: Level 2 Plumbing Ore Valley isn’t as busy as the Station Plaza site, but it is perfectly set up for students who want to learn the construction trade. It has everything you need. The workshops are big enough for you to work comfortably and there are always plenty of tools. I tried the course out and really enjoyed it, and thought that it was something I’d like to make a career out of. Plus I’m also a real firm believer that women can do these sorts of jobs and we can be just as good, if not better than men at these jobs. It is becoming a bit more common now, but I still feel that a lot of girls think that it’s just a masculine role. I’m up with the high flyers in the class, my grades are really good and I am not at a disadvantage just because I am a girl. The tutors are really nice and really helpful. Not just in class but also outside of class. They’ll do their best to help you so that it doesn’t affect your learning. I'm hoping to go onto level 3 next year. After this I’m hoping to get qualified in the gas side of things so I can work on boilers. In the long term, I’ll hopefully be able to work full-time, build up my experience and knowledge in the industry, and then one day set-up by myself and run my own plumbing business. Like

My favourite part of the course is the machine shop skills, mathematics and material studies. There is a bit for everyone really. Then we have a practical day for electronics which includes a little bit of theory, and then we have a welding day and machine shop skills. There is a lot of practical work for people who like to be hands-on and learn that way. I travel from Battle to come to College and it's really easy to get to. The facilities all over the College are amazing. There is a great range of places to eat and I can use the gym, the beauty facilities are amazing. We’ve got a sauna and Jacuzzi - it’s a real shame that you wouldn’t necessarily know about them unless you’ve been here for a treatment. What will I learn? Building on your knowledge from the Level 2 Beauty Therapy qualification you will be able to go deeper into the theory and be introduced to more advanced techniques. You will be able to understand the aging process and learn how to perform anti-aging treatments, learn how to care for certain skin conditions, as well as learning more advanced hair removal techniques. Previous School: Ark William Parker Studying: Level 3 Professional Patisserie I chose patisserie because I had been here for two years studying cooking at level 1 and level 2 so really wanted to stretch myself a bit more and try something a bit more technical. One thing I’ve realised from my time helping in the restaurant kitchen is that you need to develop a thick skin. When you’re right in the middle of service then you need to not take things to heart – because once service is over, you all go back to being best of friends again.

We have a large state-of-theart training kitchen for you to learn and practice your skills. We also have a fine dining restaurant so that you can experience serving food and drink to paying customers - great work experience for your CV!

The Martin Chiffers visit was incredible. I learnt so much from him. I’m really interested in chocolate work and we have to make a centre piece for one of our final assessments. I’d love to find a job in a restaurant in the kitchen or in a bakery. I may even consider the Concord Management programme, because I’d quite like the idea of working somewhere new. The only pastry chef jobs are in hotels and that would be something I’d love to do. I love coffee and cakes, so perhaps one day the dream would be to open a coffee and cake shop. Like

We put together our Inclusive Pathways programme to support and build the confidence of young people who want to make a commitment to progress onto mainstream college courses. We will work with you to develop a plan just for you and help you to improve your maths and English, if necessary. No formal qualifications are required to apply to this course.

This course gives students the opportunity to show their commitment and enthusiasm towards improving their maths, English and life skills.

I am now working and showing my ability to work. I don’t have too much time to get myself into trouble and I am now inspiring my children to work hard.

They will receive pastoral care, individual targets and teaching to meet their individual needs. Students can participate in educational visits, work experience, taster sessions and enrichment activities. What could I progress on to? On completion of this course you can continue on the Pathways programme to improve maths and English to Entry Level 3. Progression onto mainstream courses is available for some students and there are opportunities to participate in work placements in the College retail outlets. Previous School: St. Leonards Academy Studying: Level 3 Music Practitioners I love the music room - it’s one of my favourite places to be! There’s a lot more freedom at college than school and it’s all down to yourself to make the effort in your work and assignments! The atmosphere in the classrooms is amazing because everyone else around you are all doing the same thing. There are numerous computers to settle down at break times, and the LRC is always open after class. Palmer and Malcolm are really helpful when teaching us everything from the basics to intermediate music technology. They are both great to have a laugh with, and are always there to lend a helping hand. Even when I don’t understand something they always go through a little demonstration on the board. It really helps and I understand it better afterwards. I hope that after I finish this course I can someday travel around the world as a Musician/Music Producer. Like

The Prince’s Trust Team Programme Personal development course Campus: Station Plaza Course code: 17522 What entry requirements do I need? This course is for anyone who is aged between 16-25, not in full-time employment, education or training, and you don’t need any previous qualifications to apply. What will I learn? This programme is a 14-week personal development course that is designed to build your self-confidence, independence and skills. You’ll learn CV writing, interview and employability skills and qualifications, and be given support and guidance in how to find job opportunities, education or training. You’ll also get to go on an action-packed residential week and have the chance to take part in community projects.

We pack a lot into our 14-week Team programme, designed to help you uncover your hidden talents and improve your confidence, as well as gain a nationallyrecognised qualification, while developing your English and maths skills.

Previous School: Hastings Academy Studying: Level 3 Football Academy The football academy is great. I now play for Hastings United! In a typical week we train Monday, Tuesday and Friday – 9-11am and then I’ll have theory lessons around that. I have one lesson on a Monday, one on a Tuesday and up to three on a Friday. We play matches on Wednesday and we have a rest day on a Thursday, to help us recover from the match the day before. In lessons we cover a whole range of things. We’re covering coaching, psychology, anatomy, health and lifestyle, learn about sports more in-depth, in terms of rules, history and funding. The practical side of the academy is intense. Training is really good. The academy has got a set up like a professional club academy. The facilities allows us to cover a range of different training. We also study to gain our Level 1 coaching badge. When I finish playing football I would like to go on to coaching and I’d love to stay in the sport. I plan to go to University, but who knows what could happen between now and then. With the football academy coaches and their contacts, there is always the opportunity to be invited for trial by professional clubs, so I could actually have a life in football.

Previous School: St. Leonards Academy Studying: Level 2 Sport I want to become a badminton coach! I studied PE at school so have a good understanding of the subject. I wanted to study somewhere I could make friends. This college is a really friendly, big environment. The teachers here are friendly and more on an adult level with you. My tutor is quite laid back, but when it's time to focus and concentrate then he’ll let us know. He can be quite strict, but he’s got all of our respect so we know when we can have a laugh and when it's time to work. I like the mix of classroom based work, gym work and self-study time. I’m really interested in learning about anatomy and physiology, the body, muscles and exercise. I’m looking to go on to study Level 3 next year and after College I’d love to become a badminton coach, or something to do with coaching. I love badminton and I’ve been playing since I was 4. I already have my Level 1 badge, and once I turn 18, I'll be able to study for my Level 2. England Badminton are based in Milton Keynes so it would be great to move there and coach one day.

You have a lot of independence here and you’re not made to do something if you don’t want to do it – you’re here because you want to be which makes you enjoy it more! During the course you get to experience a bit of everything in sport so you can go into anything after. Some of our units require us to pair up and design fitness programmes for each other, and then do fitness testing to see if the programmes have worked, which was really enjoyable. The College has a great feel to it. The lessons are really good, because we get a mixture of learning. Sometimes we’re in the classroom, other lessons we have in the gym and we also go up to Horntye for more practical elements and sports, so to play netball and tag rugby. I plan to go to Plumpton college to study a foundation degree in outdoor adventurous activity as I’d quite like to be an indoor rock climbing instructor. But I also have this dream of doing that on a cruise ship, because you get to travel around and teach rock climbing. Like

I was ecstatic to find out that I got a job with Monarch. It was all a bit of a whirlwind to be honest. I saw their recruitment day pop-up on Facebook and a couple of days later I was travelling to Brighton. Everything I learned during the course, and the fact that we had to wear a cabin crew uniform and make sure that our make-up is immaculate, really paid off during my assessment. In fact, to help us even more, representatives from British Airways came into College a few months ago to put us through our paces during mock interviews. The course taught me lots about flight procedures, safety procedures, airport codes, currency, and what to do in an emergency. With all of that under my belt, it meant I could be confident and make a really good impression. Like

I’ve always wanted to work abroad because I love visiting different places and experiencing different cultures. I think this course is really good! You get to go on a lot of trips and there are so many opportunities for us. For example, there are always job opportunities coming up from our tutor contacts. Our tutors often help us apply for them, or help us get some work experience! At the end of this year, we have mock interviews with professionals from the industry to give us interview practice. I also like the uniform, it makes me feel like I’m ready to go into the world of work. You get treated like a grown up here. My tutors are so lovely. They listen to any problems you may have and don’t want you to feel like you can’t talk to them. One of the best things has to be the trips we get to go on. On one trip to Disneyland Paris we were there for three days learning how the park operates, future plans and new rides. I want to become a Holiday Camp Rep and work in holiday destinations as an entertainer. I would organise lots of fun activities for children while they’re on holiday – and I am a keen dancer and studied drama at school, so I’d be really interested in doing something like that. But more short term I want to stay at the College and study the extended diploma next year. University doesn’t really appeal to me. I’ll look to get into the industry after the second year, and hopefully make a long and successful career out of it.

College is a lot better than school because the tutors treat you with much more maturity.

I think the course here is great. It's very structured and even the small things like the uniform standards and a regular timetable help to instil discipline.

Previous School: Rye College

The course is very different from anything I’ve learned before. Parades and drills are quite similar to the ones I've done in the sea cadets – but the knowledge of the industry is different – you learn much more. You learn about all the public services, the fire service, ambulance, police, and all the different sectors within that. Also voluntary, nonvoluntary, uniformed and non-uniformed services – all the sort of things they have to do, what each service is responsible for, how they are managed and how they are funded. The tutors are brilliant, they support you with all your work. If you have any problems, they help you and sort it all out for you. Next year I will study another course to expand my knowledge and to help me boost my application to the armed forces. Joining the armed forces has been a goal of mine for about 5 years. Hopefully with qualifications and experience with the sea cadets I’ll be able to go in at a higher level.

There is also lots of opportunity to do parades, with uniform checks, which is very similar to the army. We learn about the British army core values, and get to go on trips – at the beginning of the year we went on a week-long camp with the NCS which was really great, because I was able to get to know my new class mates and tutors and make some new friends all before I started. For certain assignments we have to learn about the human body in terms of muscles and fitness and for others we have to do physical test, like gym sessions, the bleep test or go out for 1.5 mile runs. What I really want to do is be a dog handler in the police service for counter terrorism – that’s what I'm aiming to do. I’m thinking of going to the university of policing – we know that our grades are really important and it is quite competitive to get into the forces, so every grade really matters.

The course was single-handedly one of the best experiences of my life. There was not one day where I dreaded coming into College.

I love college so much that I even considered doing another course here. I really couldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t say a bad word about studying Public Services at Sussex Coast College!

I believe two vital parts of this course will help me excel in my career; the most important is the physical fitness. Since joining the UPS course I have lost 2.5 stone and have improved my cardiovascular fitness tenfold.

I have always wanted to go into the police but when my tutors suggested University, I thought, why not! Now I am going to be studying Policing and Criminology at Birmingham City University and hope to go into the police after.

This has given me an edge over some of the other officers. The second thing is discipline. This is vitally important, especially when you are a public body.

We get involved with events from Armed Forces Day, to Remembrance Day and running our own Christmas fairs. The events are all different, not necessarily related to the army or police, so we get to experience many things.

I have now applied to work for the Ministry of Defence Police and am currently half way through the initial vetting procedure. The section I have applied for is Operational Support Unit (OSU), and within 12 months I want to have started the 17-week training course. Like

Some people go to university and study for 3 years, and when they graduate they find it so difficult to get the job they want. The beauty of an apprenticeship is that you gain industry experience, which is what a lot of employers are looking for, as well as earning money simultaneously

Your Employer You’ll spend most of your time with your employer gaining industry knowledge and experience. Your employer will pay your wage, so you will need to find a company that needs an apprentice and is happy to employ you before you start the programme.

What will my Apprenticeship cost me? If you are aged 16 -18 it won’t cost you anything. If you are aged 19 and over, your employer will be asked to pay a contribution towards your Apprenticeship programme.

Entry requirements For Intermediate, Advanced and Higher Apprenticeships you will need: •

A contract of employment for a minimum of 30 hours per week; and to successfully complete a probationary period at work

If we have all the information we need on your application form, we will invite you to an interview. The sooner you return your form, the sooner you’ll receive an interview.

At the end of your interview, you will be given written confirmation of any exam grades (or other requirements) you need to secure your place. Once your place is confirmed, you will continue to receive information about starting college and your journey to an exciting future will begin.

You will receive a letter telling you what you will need to bring with you on your allocated day and time, as a general rule, these are held weekly. The interview is a good opportunity to find out more about your chosen subject (s) and will give you more information and make sure you are considering the right course for your future. Your parents/carers are welcome to come with you.

After your exam results in August, you will be invited to attend enrolment in late August or early September – this is when you officially become a Sussex Coast College student! You will need to bring in your exam results and we’ll contact you to tell you exactly when you start your course.

4 ways to apply: If your school is not using UCAS Progress or you are a 19+ learner, we have various ways to apply for our courses:

The easiest way is to apply through UCAS Progress UCAS Progress allows students to search and apply online for courses. You can apply to Sussex Coast College Hastings through UCAS Progress following the steps below: 1. Sign up to UCAS Progress - before you can apply for courses you’ll need a login. You can get this from your school or you can register yourself. 2. Research career and job ideas - there’s a range of tools and information to help you work out what you’d like to do. 3. Search for courses 4. Save courses to your favourites page when the time comes to apply, you won’t need to search for them all over again. 5. Complete your profile 6. Make an application - apply to courses on your favourites list.

Whether you have an employer or not, you can still apply to become an Apprentice.

If you are in employment or have been offered an Apprenticeship job, either you or your employer can contact the Apprenticeships Team and we will be happy to do everything to help you start an Apprenticeship.

Fill it out in capital letters - using black ink only.

3. If you’re under 16 - ask your parent/ guardian to sign the form. 4. Hand the reference form to your current/ previous school or college for completion 5. Some schools will ask to see your completed application form and send it to us on your behalf 6. Post it to us - at Station Plaza, Station Approach, Hastings, TN34 1BA.
