Welcome
2–3
‘As Chief Executive of the East Sussex College Group, I extend a warm welcome to you and look forward to seeing all our students fulfil their potential in their new pursuits.’ The merger of Sussex Downs and Sussex Coast Colleges has formed The East Sussex College Group. One of the Group’s key priorities is to increase the range of quality courses available for adults of all ages looking to develop a skill, improve job prospects or to pursue a new hobby or interest. Our staff are experienced, enthusiastic and happy to help each student who is keen to learn and be challenged in their chosen subject. Whatever your reason for studying, you will find a wide range of courses and qualifications on offer in this guide. We also outline our support services, the facilities available and details of course fees. If it is the thought of costs holding you back from making that step towards further education, finance needn’t be a barrier. There are payment instalment plans, government grants and other ways in which fees can be reduced (see page 6).
We are very aware of the additional responsibilities adults have in their day to day lives and this is why we aim to make studying at any of our campuses as accessible as possible. Our adult courses have enrolment dates throughout the year, meaning you can start a course on a chosen date that best suits you. Each of our campuses are equipped with fantastic admissions and student services teams to help you with everything from application queries to career and employment advice throughout the duration of your studies. We have on-site nurseries at our main campuses with Ofsted ratings of 'good' in Eastbourne and 'outstanding' in Hastings. We also have ample parking; connections with local and national employers; as well as a valued commitment to equal opportunities. Studying at one of our campuses in the East Sussex College Group means you can achieve your educational goals at a high standard. We have taken care of all the potential obstacles, now it’s up to you to walk through our doors.

Please note that eligibility criteria may be subject to change, based on government changes.

Advanced Learner Loan If you are planning to study any Level 3 to 6 qualification and are 19+, then you can apply for a loan from the government called the Advanced Learner Loan. Loan eligibility does not depend on your income and there are no credit checks. You will have to pay your loan back when you have finished the course and you are earning more than £25,000 a year. For more information, visit: www.gov.uk/advanced-learner-loan and see page 8 of this guide.
Loan bursary fund This loan is to help with costs while studying, such as for childcare and travel. Visit www.gov.uk/advanced-learner-loan/bursary-fund for more information.
Leisure courses Concessions are available on many of our leisure courses. For instance, if you are aged 65 and over at the start of the course, you may be eligible for a 20% reduction in course fees (not including course materials). All current course fees, enrolment forms and concessions can be found at: Eastbourne, Lewes & Newhaven: www.sussexdowns.ac.uk/study/adult-part-time Hastings: www.sussexcoast.ac.uk/student-information/learningpart-time
If you are in receipt of benefits If you are unemployed, you might be eligible for free training or a reduction in course fees. You will need to be in receipt of Jobseeker’s Allowance, enrolled in an Employment and Support Allowance work-related activity group and be required to do training as part of your Universal Credit claim.
Further education and funding At the time this guide was printed, government loan schemes were changing. Take a look at the government website (www.gov.uk/further-education-courses/ financial-help) to see what else is currently available for anyone studying after secondary education (but not part of an undergraduate of graduate degree), as there are more loans and bursaries for which you may qualify.
International students International students are invited to apply for courses in this guide, but the fees may differ from those published. Please contact Admissions for more information.
Is your fee paid by your employer? If your employer is paying your course fees, please ensure they have filled in the Employer Sponsorship section of the enrolment form in the centre of this guide. Your employer will also need to sign the form and provide a Purchase Order number. It is advisable that you do this to avoid any delay in your ability to start the course as scheduled.
Staged payments
Refunds
If your course fee is over £100 and the course duration is 14 weeks or more, then you can arrange to pay in stages using the College Staged Payment Scheme or FlexEd, an external payment scheme. Please visit us in person to arrange a payment plan.
1. Where a course has been cancelled by the College, refunds/credits will be made to learners in full.
There are two options for students to pay in stages: 1. College Staged Payments Payments can be accepted by cash or debit/credit card. You will not have to pay the £20 administration fee if you pay by direct debit. For more information, please visit: www.sussexdowns.ac.uk/support/finance-information 2. FlexEd – External Payment Scheme FlexEd is an external service available to learners, allowing costs to be spread over a longer period. Full payment is required by 31st May 2019. FlexEd make a monthly charge of £6 for this service, and instalments can be paid by card or direct debit. No interest is payable. Students can register for FlexEd through the Finance Department. Further details can be found at: www.flexed.uk.com or by ringing 01242 311057.
2. If a learner wishes to withdraw from a course prior to its commencement, and informs the College in writing or by email at least 14 working days before the start date, a refund will normally be given, less an administration fee of £50. 3. Where a learner has registered three or more attendances, no refund will be given. Exceptions may be made in cases where a learner has withdrawn from the course as a result of personal circumstances, or where a learner can demonstrate that the College has failed to deliver what could have reasonably been expected, then an application for a refund or credit should be made in writing to the Principal of your chosen campus. The College may require provision of evidence to justify any request for refund on compassionate grounds. 4. Examination fees/registration fees may only be refunded if the entry/registration has not been processed at the time of the refund application. 5. Where learners wish to transfer from one course to another, any tuition fees paid will be counted against the revised enrolment. 6. Where a learner is required to leave their programme by the College, the learner will remain liable for fees due up to the point of exclusion. Any refunds processed will be subject to a £50 administration fee. Remember, if you have any questions with regards to financial support, please contact the Admissions team on: 030 300 39699.

Advanced Learner Loan If you want to study but are worried about the financial aspect, don’t fret because there is help at hand. The government currently offers a loan for students who are 19 and older. The Advanced Learner Loan (www.gov.uk/advancedlearner-loan) is typically the most applicable loan for adult learners. Our Admissions teams can answer any questions you might have with regards to securing it.
The criteria is: • You must be 19 or older • Your course must be a Level 3, 4, 5 or 6 qualification • You must be a UK resident and have been living here for 3 years before starting the course • You must be a UK national or have a ‘settled status’
When do I have to pay it back? You will not begin loan repayments until the April after you have finished the course. You pay back your loan (plus interest) when you finish your course and earn more than £25,000 a year. Your repayments will stop if your income drops below £25,000 a year. You can make voluntary repayments if you want to pay off your loan more quickly. If you are self-employed, you will make repayments as part of your self-assessment tax return.
What do I need to apply? You can apply online or download an application form to print and post from: www.gov.uk/advanced-learner-loan You will need your ‘learning and funding information letter’ from the College, your National Insurance number and proof of identity such as your UK passport or birth certificate. You can apply for the loan after your course has started but not after your course has finished.
What if I change my mind about studying once I have taken out the loan? If you leave or change your course after the initial two weeks, you will be liable to pay any money back (plus interest) that has been paid to the college by your Advanced Learner Loan.
Access to Higher Education (HE) course If you have completed an Access to Higher Education course, the balance of the loan outstanding could be written off if you continue to pursue and complete a Higher Education course. To find out more about 19+ Advanced Learner Loans and which courses are eligible for support, contact 030 300 39699.
How much money can I get? The minimum loan amount is £300 and the maximum loan you can get depends on the course you take and the course fee. Please note that you don’t have to borrow the full cost of your course
How is the loan paid? The loan will be paid directly to the College once you have attended your course for two weeks or more.

Sussex Downs College and Sussex Coast College offer a wide variety of programmes. Some lead to nationally recognised qualifications at different levels, the details of which can seem complicated. For a brief overview of how qualifications compare, take a look at the chart opposite, which shows the different levels and what they can lead to. In some cases you will need to start at Level 1 or 2 to ensure you gain the background knowledge and skill level required. In others, as long as you have achieved a certain level of qualification, e.g GCSE at grade C, you can go on to higher study. If you are employed in a role that requires higher level skills and competence, you may be able to ‘jump’ up a level.

Why study ESOL?
What are the entry requirements?
Our ESOL courses are designed to help you to improve your English language and your awareness of British culture and British values. We can also support you in successfully gaining positive progression into work, an apprenticeship, another college course, volunteering, or any other programme that would benefit you.
You must have the right to study in the UK and be 16 years or above.
Our courses consist of separate speaking & listening, reading and writing courses. Our six levels consist of: • Pre-Entry • Entry 1 • Entry 2 • Entry 3 • Level 1 • Level 2 Before you start your course, you will do an assessment to determine your level of reading, writing, speaking & listening. From this assessment we will discuss which classes are best for you. When you start your course, your teacher will continue to assess you to find out more about your language needs. Your teacher will help you to decide on targets and what you want to be able to achieve by the end of the course. During the course, you will review these targets and discuss your progress with your teacher. In each course, you learn and practise all four language skills: • Reading • Writing • Speaking • Listening You will also practise grammar and pronunciation. At the end of the course, all students will take an exam (except for Pre-Entry classes). You must come to the exam. When you have finished your course, you can take another course in a different skill at the same or a different level.
What exams will I take? You will take a national ESOL Skills for Life qualification.
Where can I go next? When you have finished your course, you are able to move on to a higher level in ESOL. You could progress to Functional Skills or GCSEs. You might find a job, or you might go onto further education.
