WALK WILLINGDON WEIGHT OFF WORKSHOP
With Christmas fast approaching, we sent Robert Veitch to the South Downs high above Willingdon with his friends Stephen and Callum, and Callum’s leading lady, Scout, to find a seasonal stunner to round off a year of wonderful Sussex Living walks

Set out from the kissing gate by the pay and display machine and the 4-way fingerpost pointing towards Combe Hill. Head towards the scrub on the brow of Cold Crouch, passing it on the right, then veer around to the left on the other side.

Ascend the slope on the other side, past the metal gate and bench to the fingerpost.
Climb carefully down the 15 steps, then through the trees to the open field beyond. Bear left, across the field, in the general direction of the church, then through the gap in the hedge to join Folkington Road.
Turn left and stroll along the tarmac, into the hamlet of Folkington, turning left at the red Victorian post box and continuing to the Church of St Peter ad Vincula.
A few dozen steps past the church, turn left onto the byway. The route eases downhill on solid ground, past a barrier. The byway stretches for 1¼ miles through rolling landscape, sweeping left and right, sometimes up, sometimes down. It’s a good time to sort out the troubles of the world with your walking buddy, although on this occasion it was more like ‘last of the summer whine’ according to Callum.
At the next barrier, turn right, past another barrier, and walk uphill for a short distance before turning

left alongside the training fences in Holt Bottom. Continue gently uphill between the ivy cloaked tree trunks and through the last of the autumnal leaf fall. Veer left where the path splits and soon after there is a 4-way fingerpost.
Turn left and walk downhill between the equine paddocks to St Andrew’s Church in Jevington.
Continue along the tarmac of Church Lane to the junction with Jevington Road, “and the birthplace of banoffee pie,” said Stephen with a famished glint in his eye. “Didn’t they invent Terry Misu here as well?” questioned Callum with all the insight and enlightenment of Derek Trotter at his Only Fools And Horses peak!
Turn right and walk along the road for 50m before turning left into

Eastbourne Lane and beginning the mile long climb to the summit of Willingdon Hill.
The climb is not as bad as it might seem, but glistening foreheads and the odd bead of perspiration are worth the sacrifice for the panorama that begins to unfold on the long drag to the summit.
The first 4-way fingerpost is not quite the summit so continue for a few more metres to the second 4-way fingerpost. Turn left and the trig point is almost as rewarding as the 360° degree cinematic spectacle. The plethora of landmarks on offer will only be realised with generous and obliging weather.
