Jubilee the Bury Way

Just over a couple of years ago, Bury villager, Chris Briggs started the idea of planting 1000 trees in Bury. As a school, this idea fitted very much with our ethos of connecting the children with the world around them and so our children started collecting local, native seeds. They learned all about the different species and learned about the specific needs of each seed. We asked for donations of old plant pots and the children began to grow them. And then Covid hit. The project was put on hold along with almost everything else. One of our team, Mr Gatrell, took the seedlings home and looked after them in his garden whilst we were unsure when all of our children would join the key worker’s children back in school. We started the 21/22 school year with everyone back and discussed plans for getting the saplings into the ground so that Chris’s plan could start to become a reality. The Jubilee seemed a fitting opportunity to plant the trees. Although, traditionally not the best time of year to plant a tree, they were all pot grown and we have plenty of enthusiastic children to keep them watered. Unfortunately, Chris passed away earlier this year before we had had the chance to get the trees into the ground and so did not have the opportunity to see the home-grown trees go into the ground. We thought it would be fitting for one of Chris’s sons to join us and plant one of the trees in memory of his dad as part of our Jubilee tree planting. Andy agreed and chose an Oak for the occasion. Along with Andy, all of the children helped to plant a variety of their own grown trees and also dressed in their national colours for the day. Thank you to Andy for joining us and to his dad, Chris for suggesting the 1000 trees project in the first place. Mr Moore, Headteacher www.bury.w-sussex.sch.uk

Tree planting, artwork, silver sports games award & activities

Following the excitement of Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations, the children are enjoying the last few weeks of this academic year. We were delighted to be able to participate in The Queen’s Green Canopy, a unique tree-planting initiative to mark Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee. We have planted a tree, donated by RHS Wisley, and we are very grateful. Children throughout the school have been creating artwork on mugs and tea towels as part of the celebrations. Great active and memorable learning has also been on the go with Year 4 making the digestive system using tights and then ‘consuming’ bananas and crackers, adding water as saliva, then vinegar as the acid in our stomachs and then showing the food entering the small intestine and the journey before being excreted from the body. We are also celebrating a Silver Sports Games Award for all the school’s effort in PE and physical activity. We have had so many children out at competitions over the last two terms and the effort of the children and Mrs Gowland, Mrs Burbidge and Mrs Treadwell has been recognised. Well done to everyone! Year 5 had a weekend of fun and frolics at Cobnor Activities Centre, sleeping in bell tents and trying a variety of land- and water-based activities and Year 6 have been on a residential visit to Marchants Hill. We will be sorry to say goodbye to our Year 6s, but they are eagerly anticipating the arrival of this year’s Big Top for the Summer production –‘Alice – The Musical’ The roles have been cast and they are all busy learning their parts and rehearsing. Following this they will have their Leavers’. We wish them every success in the next stage of their studies. Mrs S Copus www.st-marys-pulborough.w-sussex.sch.uk

Queen’s Platinum Jubilee

Pre-half-term Platinum Jubilee activities St. James C of E Primary had lots of fun before the recent half term learning about the Queen's life and her roles and responsibilities. On Friday 27th May, just before the half-term holidays, we held a whole school Jubilee celebration, which was a huge success. Every class contributed to the decorations and the activities and picnic were gratefully received by all. St. James held a Platinum Jubilee Celebration Lunch ‘street party’ on the playground, whilst our children also enjoyed playing some “traditional” type games and the parents even got in on the act with a Jubilee song at the end of the afternoon. Thank you to all of the families for their contributions towards a feast fit for a Queen.
