Bury Primary School Jubilee the Bury Way Just over a couple of years ago, Bury villager, Chris Briggs started the idea of planting 1000 trees in Bury. As a school, this idea fitted very much with our ethos of connecting the children with the world around them and so our children started collecting local, native seeds. They learned all about the different species and learned about the specific needs of each seed. We asked for donations of old plant pots and the children began to grow them. And then Covid hit. The project was put on hold along with almost everything else. One of our team, Mr Gatrell, took the seedlings home and looked after them in his garden whilst we were unsure when all of our children would join the key worker’s children back in school. We started the 21/22 school year with everyone back and discussed plans for getting the saplings into the ground so that Chris’s plan could start to become a reality. The Jubilee seemed a fitting opportunity to plant the trees. Although, traditionally not the best time of year to plant a tree, they were all pot

grown and we have plenty of enthusiastic children to keep them watered. Unfortunately, Chris passed away earlier this year before we had had the chance to get the trees into the ground and so did not have the opportunity to see the home-grown trees go into the ground. We thought it would be fitting for one of Chris’s sons to join us and plant one of the trees in memory of his dad as part of our Jubilee tree planting. Andy agreed and chose an Oak for the occasion. Along with Andy, all of the children helped to plant a variety of their own grown trees and also dressed in their national colours for the day.
