HELLO! Christmas happens at the same time every year but we still seem to rush around at the last minute to get ready - at least we do in our house! Winter solstice on the 22nd of December is the shortest day and has been a traditional time for gathering together, feasting and some cultures light fires to celebrate the coming of lighter days. Our charity profile this month is on the Young People’s Shop. Based in Chichester but offering confidential emotional support to young people across West Sussex. With increasing numbers of children refusing to go to school and more young people suffering from anxiety and depression this is a valuable service in need of volunteers, trustees and of course donations.

Charity & Community news from across the counties After a five-year break, the prestigious South Downs Designs Awards are back celebrating high standards of urban, architectural and landscape design, as well as promote creativity and understanding of the National Park through design. Nominations will open on 1 January, 2024 and finish on 30 April. The shortlist will be announced in the summer of 2024, with a glittering awards ceremony taking place in the autumn. www.southdowns.gov.uk/designawards. A full-time chief executive is to be recruited by West Sussex County Council. Becky Shaw has been chief executive of both West and East Sussex County Councils since January 2020, but is now returning to the East Sussex role. Sussex Police Commissioner Katy Bourne has secured almost £1m as part of round five of the Government’s Safer Streets Fund. The money wil l go towards supporting Sussex police to create eight new Victim Co-ordinator roles; provide six licensed Safety Marshals on foot patrol in high visibility uniform; modernise some of the CCTV systems in Sussex. A group of Sussex researchers are partnering with universities and school mental health support teams to pilot a school-based programme to help young people in West Sussex who are hearing voices to access support more quickly. According to national charity the Voice Collective, 1 in 8 young people experience voice hearing, which for some can be comforting or humorous, but for others can be frightening and unsettling. www.sussexpartnership.nhs.uk/our-research. A Sussex Belloc is an anthology of poetry, essays and other prose of Hilaire Belloc who lived and worked in Slindon for many years. A landmark agreement has been signed that marks the first step towards creating large new areas of habitat for wildlife in the South Downs National Park. The large swathe of downland is the first to appear on the National Park Authority’s register of land that is formally dedicated for “Biodiversity Net Gain” (BNG) provision and the hope is that other farms across Sussex may follow suit and dedicate land for BNG. During the run up to Christmas West Sussex Libraries will be holding lots of free seasonal activities for children. Libraries are getting into the festive spirit and offering visitors a fantastic choice of free Christmas events and activities to enjoy from seasonal rhyme times and story times to special craft activities. Charity & Community news from Horsham District Supporting Nature Recovery in Horsham District The Wilder Horsham District project, a partnership between Horsham District Council and Sussex Wildlife Trust, is celebrating three years of supporting nature recovery in the Horsham District. Its 2023 Annual Report lists the major achievements for the year. These include: • Supporting landowners to protect and sustain breeding habitats, establishing more natural grazing, building habitat links and introducing flood management measures. • Delivering support to parish councils and community groups through workshops, site visits, habitat management guidance and more. • Recruiting an additional resource to support the work of some 53 conservation volunteers to deliver a range of nature recovery tasks. • Giving funding and support to five new recipients of the Nature Recovery Award, all contributing towards the creation of a Nature Recovery Network in Horsham District. Free app for businesses to counter shop theft Horsham Town Centre recently hosted Sussex Police and Crime Commissioner Katy Bourne as she met with the new Horsham District Business Crime Reduction Partnership and helped launch a smartphone app called Disc to reduce business crime. The app is offered free to local retailers and businesses thanks to funding from the Sussex Police & Crime Commission. Registered Disc users can use it to alert each other about shoplifters or anti-social behaviour, quickly sharing offender descriptions, times seen, images, and reporting crime to police. Interested business should email communitysafety@horsham.gov.uk Steyning Army Cadets seeks new members If your teenager needs to get out and about more, learn new skills whilst making new friends, then joining the Army Cadets at their Steyning detachment (base) might be worth exploring. Cadets get to take part in loads of exciting and challenging activities such as fieldcraft, adventure training, first aid, music, sports and shooting, and there is also a Duke of Edinburgh
Awards programme. The training syllabus teaches skills, discipline and gives young people selfconfidence they never thought was possible. There are regular expedition weekends away plus the opportunity to go on annual camp with lots of cadets from other detachments in the county. They have stated that the expansion would be damaging to the environment, including impacts on noise, pollution and biodiversity, as well as to its climate and carbon reduction aims. Additionally, the Council does not believe the existing road and rail infrastructure is adequate for the needs of an expanded airport. A public examination into the project, should start in early 2024. Charity Carol Evening Pulborough charity The Mary How Trust's Community Christmas Carol Evening is at St Mary's Church Pulborough on 13th December from 6.30pm. Painted Lady butterfly
Painted Lady migration patterns and other migratory insects Something to look forward to and appreciate next Spring. Every year, Southern England becomes the stage for a remarkable sight when 3.5 trillion flying insects, equalling the weight of 20,000 reindeer, migrate across the country. Among these insects are the Painted Lady butterflies, the subject of recent discovery among scientists and butterfly enthusiasts. The Painted Lady butterfly (Vanessa cardui) has a 50-56mm wingspan and often populates dry open areas. You will see them on your Buddleia or Lavender. Every spring they journey from their overwintering grounds in North Africa and the Mediterranean region to the UK. These butterflies have average altitudes of 500m, can reach 30mph in favourable conditions, and do a 9000-mile round trip from Africa to the Arctic Circle!
For many years it was a mystery where Painted Lady butterflies went in the autumn, whether they died in the UK or made a return journey, as they fly at such a high altitude and could not be seen by butterfly observers. It was recently discovered that the Painted Lady butterflies do make a return journey in autumn, returning to favourable temperatures further South. These butterflies are unique due to their migration being the longest ever recorded flight in butterflies. These migrations take generations, as they lay their eggs in the UK, and the offspring continue the migration South to southern Europe and North Africa, although not all participate, and some may not survive the harsh UK winters. How do they know when to start the migration? The caterpillars of Painted Ladies grow while the days are lengthening, to then fly northwards, and when the days shorten the butterflies know to travel south to warmer climates.

Although the migration of Painted Lady butterflies are one of a kind, other migratory insects are worth keeping an eye out for. Sometimes we experience mass migrations of insects in summer and autumn. Between 10 and 25 billion medium and large insects move back and forth out of regions in Britain. This could include hoverflies for example, where 4 billion come to and from Britain each year, and they are essential for pollination and natural pest control. Let good enough be good enough! By Heather Smith - Nutritionist & Personal Trainer Do you feel like you’re either ‘being good’ or ‘eating badly’ with very little in between? Please take this as your annual reminder that sometimes good enough is, well, good enough! Many people feel a sense of dread when they think about the food and drink around at Christmas. I think this is a real shame, and I’d really like to help you avoid that feeling this year. I’d like you to remember that we eat for lots of reasons which aren’t nutrition. Food is also a way to celebrate, a way to join together with our friends and family. Food can bring back memories and help create new ones. And so, the idea that veggies are good and mince pies are bad means that we are ignoring many of the reasons we eat. ‘Eating well’ to ‘eating badly’ is a spectrum, and you’re not always at one end or the other. It is quite reasonable to find a balance between the food and drink you want to enjoy, and the food and drink which is supportive to your health
goals. This is most clear-cut at Christmas, but it is true for the rest of the year as well. Sometimes, you’ll be focussing harder on your health goals, and sometimes you’ll be focussing more on the non-nutrition reasons we eat. So, choose a few things you can do over Christmas which are aligned with your overall goal, and choose a few things which allow you to enjoy the non-nutritional reasons for eating. Young People’s Shop…
Offering confidential support for young people by Lynn Smith Chichester based charity, Young People’s Shop (YPS) offers free and confidential support for young people aged between 11 and 25 years, who are struggling with their emotional wellbeing and mental health. The charity’s aim is to ensure that every young person in the west of West Sussex can access the help and advice they need. Cathy Burnard, CEO of YPS, tells me that there is a mental health crisis amongst young people, with the charity seeing rising rates of school refusers and young people suffering from anxiety, depression and self-harm. The factors behind this surge are not surprising, a significant influence has been the pandemic which introduced unprecedented uncertainty, fear and social isolation. At the same time, global economic instability and job losses have intensified stress and anxiety for many. Cathy goes onto explain that the widespread use of digital technology and social media has exposed people to a constant stream of alarming news and comparison-driven content that also feeds anxiety. “This is a critical time when a young person has taken the first steps to ask for help. Soaring numbers of under-18 sought NHS care for mental health problems in 2022, but according to Public Health England, only a quarter of those who need help get it.” She quotes the NSPCC, "There has been a 33 percent rise in referrals to specialist services for UK pupils needing mental health treatment."
“More and more young people who are struggling come into YPS.” “Many young people who access our services are experiencing problems with their emotional wellbeing and mental health. This may manifest itself as depression, anxiety, anger, low selfesteem, vulnerability, isolation, self-harm, or through an eating disorder. They may be in abusive relationships (neglect from parents, siblings, partners, or bullying at school). We take many referrals from Statutory Services, including GPs and Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) who acknowledge that the young person's mental health is significant enough to warrant further intervention and support from our services.”
Providing a variety of services to help young people with their needs. Services provided by YPS include - emotional support sessions, provided online, in person or by telephone. These are open-ended, meaning that there is no limit to the number of sessions a user can have. YPS also offers a free counselling service with a team of qualified and student counsellors trained and supervised to offer the best support possible. Again, users can access counselling in person, online, or by telephone. Additionally, the charity operates a drop-in service providing information and advice on any issues young people may face and can also signpost users to other specialist services. Outreach services take YPS into events, schools, colleges and universities in the community and the charity also runs workshops on topics such as selfesteem, anxiety, mindfulness, employment skills, self-care, and wellbeing. However, Cathy explains that YPS is a holistic service that doesn’t just focus on mental health. “We offer activities to support physical health and others to support creativity. Yoga, noncontact boxing, skateboarding, arts and crafts, Bushcraft, and sailing are just some activities we offer throughout the year.” Accessing the services of YPS YPS prides itself on being an accessible service for young people and young people can refer themselves to the charity, be referred by statutory bodies, GPs or through school contact. Cathy tells me that YPS has been supporting young people since 1998, when West Sussex

Council set up “Information Shops for Young People,” of which there were seven across the county, each overseen by a management committee. “The project began as part of the National Youth Agency’s initiative to provide free and confidential information, advice, support, and counselling services for young people on all matters that had importance and meaning in their lives. In December 2009, a policy change by West Sussex Youth Service dictated the closure of the Shop, in favour of merging its advice and support elements with the Connexions/Careers service. However, members of the Management Committee were passionate about preserving the project’s highly valued counselling service. They decided to maintain governance of the counselling as a separate entity, and to retain the name ‘Chichester Information Shop for Young People.’ “ With no statutory funding or premises, it was a challenge for the committee. Still the Boys’ Club in Little London supported their endeavours and identified a space in their building, which became the project’s new counselling hub. In 2012 the Shop gained charitable status and moved into a larger space in the Boys’ Club building,
enabling the project to offer drop-in information, advice and support in addition to the existing counselling service. In 2021, the charity moves to premises in South Street, Chichester and, “In October 2022, we re-branded and changed our name to the Young People's Shop.” Since 1998, YPS has been making a positive difference to the lives of the young people it supports. “The number has significantly increased over the last few years. In 2022, we had over 2,500 contacts with young people for counselling and emotional support, with an average

These numbers continue to grow.” “Outcomes of the young people we support …” When I ask what degree of success the charity has, and how that success is defined, Cathy provides some of the outcomes experienced by the young people YPS supports, including improved self-esteem, confidence and happiness, and learning self-management techniques to help with stress, anxiety, depression and other mental health issues. She tells me that progress and outcomes are measured through feedback forms. Current results indicate that after visiting YPS, 72 percent said their self-esteem improved, 76 percent felt more confident, 62 percent said anxiety levels had improved, 49 percent said their relationships and socialising had improved and 66 percent said they wanted to make positive life changes following YPS support. An independent charity, working hard to raise voluntary funding YPS is funded from applications to local community and national funders such as the National Lottery Community Fund and BBC Children in Need. The charity currently has 47 staff
members, including seven paid staff, contracted staff, volunteers and trustees. The charity is, Cathy says, “Always looking for volunteers and trustees to enrich our service to young people. For people interested in volunteering, please don't hesitate to contact YPS, outlining why you would like to volunteer for us and how you can help us support young people. “The last two years have been a difficult time for the charity sector. The current economic climate poses significant challenges for organisations reliant on charitable donations. Economic downturns frequently lead to higher demand for the services provided by charities, especially those supporting vulnerable populations like young people. Bury Primary School Update for December 2023 In a change from always hearing from Mr Moore, Mrs Braun has kindly provided the article for this month’s piece. On Tuesday 17th October Year 5 and 6 at Bury CE Primary took part in a very exciting meeting – The Big Education Conversation. An education network (Heads Up 4 Headteachers) have commissioned Ed Finch (an ex-headteacher from Devon) to help children across Britain to organise and run meetings with their communities to find out what they think about the purposes of education. We were lucky enough to be one of only 15 schools chosen to take part, with the smallest having only 12 pupils and largest over 1000! The children decided the question to be debated was ‘Should education prepare us for life after school?’ Members of our school community including governors, parents, grandparents, villagers and parents of ex-pupils joined us in the hall to discuss the issue. A courageous group of 5 children led the meeting and asked a variety of questions to get the
group’s minds warmed up including, ‘What were the positive and negative experiences of school?’, ‘Who do you think education is for?’ and ‘Who should be in charge of what children learn?’. School dinners topped the list of negative experiences and art lessons were one of the most highly ranked positive experiences. It was really interesting to see people from across the generations making links with each other over shared experiences. Many people commented on how eloquent the children were and how mature they were when both listening to our visitors’ thoughts and in putting across their own views as well as introducing the questions and asking for quiet when the discussions had reached fever pitch! All the thoughts will be collated and a report returned to us and we hope to be able to share the results in the future. St. James’ CE Primary School Update for December 2023 As I write this article, we are just at the start of Autumn Term 2 and it is promising to be a very busy half-term! I have already heard the sound of Nativity songs being practised by our little ones so there is a festive feeling in the air! Little Lifesavers Our Year 5 and 6 class, Jaguars, recently took part in a life-saving session run by Little Life Savers – a local charity who train young people to administer first aid in the event of choking or a cardiac arrest. They also learned how to put someone in the recovery position. You can read about Little Life Savers on their website: www.littlelifesavers.org Marwell Zoo The whole school visited Marwell Zoo earlier in the term. One of the advantages of being a smaller school is being able to organise whole school trips, where the older and younger children can share experiences, together.
The weather was forecast to be very poor; children and staff all layered up and had their waterproofs with them only for the rain to stay away and the temperature be lovely! The children and adults had a wonderful time seeing a variety of wildlife, including sloths, giraffes, rhinos, meerkats, birds and reptiles. Organised into small groups, the children were supervised by staff and many parent helpers with us who we are very grateful to for their support. St Mary’s C of E Primary School, Pulborough Remembrance, fireworks & Christmas play A wreath was laid by our Head Boy and Head Girl at the War Memorial on Remembrance Sunday and the school also held its own ceremony with a two-minute silence. We thought about the courage that the soldiers showed and what we can learn about courage. We were delighted to be able to hold our Family Firework Night this year – it was a real community event and lovely to see the children’s faces as they watched the fireworks. Many thanks to the PTA for their organisation of this event. The fireworks lit up the sky and brought so much hope in a dark night sky! The Christmas play rehearsals are now in full swing and we are looking forward to being able to perform ‘A Midwife Crisis’ and ‘A Twinkly Nativity’ to parents and carers. The children always put so much effort into their singing, dancing and acting! Such a great opportunity! As we approach the holidays we would like to wish you all a very Happy Christmas and a prosperous New Year!

Homemade eggnog A traditional Christmas drink Ingredients • 6 egg yolks • 150g local honey • 500ml whole milk • 230g double cream • 1 tsp ‘Carlas Seasoning’ sweet spice blend, plus extra for topping • A pinch salt • ¼ tsp vanilla extract • 100ml Sussex spirit brandy • To serve, whipped cream Method 1. Whisk the egg yolks and honey together in a medium bowl until light and creamy. 2. In a saucepan over a medium to high heat combine the milk, cream, spice blend and salt, stir regularly until the mixture just reaches a light simmer. 3. Add a ladle of the hot milk to the egg mixture, whisking vigorously. Repeat ladle by ladle to temper the eggs. By doing this gradually will mean the eggs should not scramble.
4. Once most of the hot mixture has been used pour the mixture back into the saucepan over a low heat. 5. Whisk constantly for just a few minutes, until the mixture has just slightly thickened. 6. Remove from the heat and stir in the vanilla and Sussex brandy. 7. Pour the eggnog through a fine mesh strainer into a jug and cover with cling film. 8. Refrigerate until chilled. It will thicken further as it cools, if you prefer a smoother consistency, you can blend the mixture before serving with a couple tablespoons of milk. 9. West Chiltington Parish Council Update for December 2023 Temporary cleaning position available The Parish Council has a short-term vacancy available for 5 hours per week, cleaning the Parish Council Office and the Cricket Pavilion. Haglands Lane Car Park At the time of writing, we are looking forward to Haglands Lane Car Park being resurfaced. With apologies for the inconvenience caused by the closure, we trust everyone will agree it will have been worth it. Tree Planting In January we will be planting trees around the Parish to replace those that have been lost to disease and other problems over the last few years. These 50 trees are coming to us free of charge through The Conservation Volunteers ‘I Dig Trees’ initiative – for more information go to www.tcv.org.uk Speed Indicator Devices (SIDs) • Following the success of the SIDs already in place, we are now considering additional devices on East Street and Monkmead Lane, with the support of local residents. • Please remember that the legal speed limit is only the one on the road signs, not necessarily the speed indicated inside your vehicle i.e. through Sat Nav or other device. • Most roads throughout West Chiltington are 30mph. • The four roads approaching the School in the old village are 20mph, whether or not the school is open. Flooding • Due to climate change the risk of flooding will increase as sea levels rise, winter rainfall increases and flash storms become a lot more frequent.
• Blocked ditches are
a common cause of flooding - if the drainage ditches have not been kept clear they can’t carry water away, contributing to localised flooding. • If you live next to a watercourse and own at least one of the banks you are a ‘riparian owner’. • You may not even be aware that you are responsible for a drainage ditch. It’s important to check this, as you are responsible for the maintenance of the watercourse to ensure against flood risk to other properties. • If you have not disclosed that you are a riparian owner to your insurance company it could affect your ability to claim in the event of a flood. • The Environment Agency leaflet ‘Living on the Edge - A guide to rights and responsibilities of riverside ownership’ on the Environment Agency website explains riparian ownership. Pulborough Parish Council Report from Len Ellis-Brown, Chair PPC A29 partial road closure The Parish Council continues pressing for a solution to the A29 lane closure. The current single file system will remain for some time even if resolved quickly. Recreation Ground Work has started on cricket net improvements after securing a £30,000 grant. Soil removal extended the bund, better protecting the space. Plans are underway to overhaul the multi-use games area. Pocket Park We cleared and opened up the pocket park, increasing visibility and accessibility, discouraging antisocial behaviour with police patrols. The bridge was also repaired. Christmas Fair The Parish Council is organizing a fair on December 1st, 5-8pm in the village hall, funded by the District Council. There will be stalls, snacks, drinks, carols, Santa and more.
Sussex Wildlife Trust On November 10th, the Trust will hold an event on the partnership with the District Council. The Parish Council will share environmental objectives like protecting greenspaces and biodiversity. Rivermead Reversing a previous decision, we will continue managing the Rivermead Nature Area after securing funding from the landowner to maintain biodiversity. Anti-social behaviour Wardens and councillors met residents at the market to discuss solutions. Please continue reporting issues to the police so we can address community problems. Harvest Fair Thanks to the Community Partnership for an excellent Harvest Fair. Highlights included the Parish Council chair dressed as a banana!
