SUSSEX Nov 2023 Mediaeval Baebes
HELLO! November is a busy month with Guy Fawkes night on Sunday 5th and Remembrance Sunday on the 12th. Many local communities will gather to watch armed forces personnel, cadets and members of the Scouting organisation parade and lay wreaths in memory of those who have lost their lives in the line of duty. You many also have heard of “Movember” a month-long charity event when men grow moustaches to raise awareness of male health issues. Since 2016 Movember has raised over £25 million towards men’s health and wellness initiatives. Our charity article this month is on Carers Support West Sussex. An esteemed organisation doing so much for the many unpaid carers in our community. If you know of a West Sussex charity in need of recognition please get in touch. All charity articles are offered free of charge and promotion in these pages not only raises awareness but can lead to much needed donations. This month is also the start of Christmas fayres and markets, putting us in the mood for another festive season! We have lots featured in our What’s On guide and more online at www.sussexlocal.net Lest we forget,
Kris & Jeff

LOCAL KNOWLEDGE INTERNATIONAL REACH
My story ... I've been an estate agent since 2001 and have helped thousands of people to move home. I live locally and have moved house many times myself, so I understand just how difficult and frustrating the process can be. I've been a private landlord for nearly 20 years and have built up a massive database of really useful contacts - tradesmen, surveyors, solicitors, mortgage advisers, etc. I only ever recommend third party providers that I've personally used and who I know will provide exceptional customer service. As an independent estate agent and business owner, I am able to offer a very personal, bespoke service. I limit the number of properties on my books and make myself available to all my clients from 7am to 7pm, Monday to Saturday by phone, text, email and WhatsApp. As well as marketing on all the major property portals, I use targeted social media campaigns to reach a wider audience. I employ a professional photographer and a local drone videographer to ensure my clients' homes are visually presented at their best. I proudly hold the CPEA professional qualification. I'm partnered with Keller Williams, the largest estate agency network in the world, with more than 210,000 agents across 57 countries sharing skills, knowledge and resources. KW is well known within estate agency circles for its award winning training and development - important within an industry which is always evolving - as well as for its community spirit and charitable activities.

It was our pleasure to assist West Chiltington Schools Family Running Festival in September. Scouting is not just about providing fun activities for the young people to enjoy or keeping them off screens and getting them outdoors- although we do both and they love it! Like all youth groups, we always need willing adult volunteers! This maybe working directly with the young people: Beavers (6-8 years), Cubs (8-10 years), Scouts (10-14 years), Explorers (14-18 years). Volunteers for all sections are warmly received and always in need. Or maybe more behind the scenes like our Treasurer, Board of Trustees, Membership Secretary - who all provide an invaluable supporting role to our group. Areas we need immediate help would be a Social Media Support – an individual willing to help promote what we are doing on social media platforms. Monthly gardening ideas & tasks by Andrew Staib of Glorious Gardens
Bulbs- a guide to a colourful Spring garden When a client asks me to design a garden with all year colour, my first thoughts are normally-“Right, lots of Spring bulbs so that the rest of the beds can be taken up with Summer and Autumn flowering plants!” They are the most efficient way to have colour from January to May without taking up too much space and bulbs can be planted in areas where the trees haven’t come into leaf so they survive where other flowering plants can’t. And they are inflation busting with most coming back Allium purple sensations in greater abundance each year. Below are some tips on what and where to plant Lawn this month. It is not fashionable these days but why not plant up a large area of your lawn with Crocuses. Alliums - wow factor Plant your Alliums deep as their long stem They will delight you when they push up through growth under the soil to reach the surface will the grass and in the 70’s colour scheme of purproduce stronger more wind tolerant stems. And if you are planting them in borders it is better to have three clumps of 15 than 45 bulbs dotted about the place looking lonely. Go for the unusual Try Frittilaria Crown Imperials, the mad looked Allium ‘Hair’, Narcissi ‘Rip Van Winkle’ or Tulipa ‘Wow’ and again plant in a couple of nice big clumps, maybe on both sides of your doorway so you enjoy them many times a day. You can also try the giant Snowdrop Leucojuim in a quiet corner of the garden. Plant in amongst other plants You can plant your bulbs in amongst evergreen ground cover which doubles the use of the space and also hides the foliage once the bulbs have finished. Try planting in amongst an area of Perriwinkle, Ajuga, Violets or even Ivy. Snowdrops are good at the base of Japanese anemones before the latter come into leaf. Bulb Combinations Try these combinations. Agapanthas and Wild Garlic, large pale pink Hyacinths with the pale blue of Miscarri Baby’s Breath, Tete-a-Tete
Frittilaria crown imperials
Narcissi with Frittillaria. Also look at the maximum and minimum heights of your borders and position accordingly. eg Allium altissima at 1.5m and Allium Christophii at 35cm. Successional planting Make a column where you make sure you have bulbs coming up all the way through the year as if they are passing the baton to each other. For example you can buy Very Early, Early, Mid and Late flowering Tulips and Daffodils. Also you can factor in the corm families as well with Agapanths, Cannas and Irises as well as Dahlias. There are also Crinums for the end of summer, bright pink Nerines and Cyclamen hederifolium for Autumn as well as autumn flowering Colchicums with their ghostly translucent hue.

Planting Advice and Care The packet that the bulbs arrive in will normally tell you the depth and spacing for planting up. If you are planting in clumps dig a whole section of the bed up of about 40cm in diameter rather than try to plant them individually. Bulbs as a rule need very well drained soil so if you are in a lot of clay really prepare the soil well with grit and organic improver and even then you will have to experiment with what survives. If you have planted in pots make sure they don’t dry out which is possible if we have a dry Autumn or Winter. Bulbs like a mulch feed whether in pots or in the open ground so this can done now after you have planted them. If you deadhead the old flowers once they have finished then you will stop the plant having to produce seeds which can weaken it. Most people though like to leave the old seedheads of Alliums to dry out as they look very sculptural over the Summer and Autumn. Lastly if you leave the foliage to die back naturally then more of the energy of the plant can return to the bulb increasing its health.
Where to go in November Wakefield is a must if you like Autumn colour. Wonderful Autumnal trees against the blue of the lakes. The garden is lovingly tended Sheffield Park with an eye for detail and simple colour palettes. Also put Sheffield Park in your diaries for November for it’s dazzling autumnal displays of mature trees.

The humble garage Untapped expansion potential? By Nick Roberts RMR Group A Hidden Gem in Plain Sight The humble garage. A sanctuary for forgotten tools, old bicycles, and those boxes you've been meaning to sort through since 2005. For many, it's a place where dreams of DIY projects go to gather dust. But what if I told you that your garage is not just a storage unit, but a treasure trove of untapped potential? Now, I know what you're thinking. 'But my garage is a mess! It's dark, it's damp, and it's definitely not fit for habitation!' Ah, dear reader, that's where the magic of architectural expertise comes into play. With the right guidance, that cluttered space can be transformed into a haven of comfort and style. While the idea of converting your garage might seem daunting, it's not as Herculean a task as one might think. Yes, there are considerations to be made – insulation, ventilation, and building
regulations. But with the right team by your side, these challenges become mere stepping stones on the path to your dream space. And speaking of challenges, it's always wise to expect the unexpected. Just as in life, sometimes when you peel back the layers, you find a few surprises. Maybe it's an old structural issue or a forgotten time capsule from the 80s. But with a seasoned architect or builder to guide you, these surprises can be tackled with grace and humour. In these times, when space is at a premium and the world is changing rapidly, it's comforting to know that we can find sanctuary right under our noses. Garage conversions are not just about adding space; they're about enhancing the quality of our lives. They're about rediscovering the beauty in the familiar and making the most of what we have. So, the next time you look at your garage, see it not as a storage space, but as a canvas waiting for your vision. And who knows? That hidden gem might just be the best room in the house. www.robertsmillerredshaw.com

Preparing your home for sale Maximise viewings & secure the best price for your home Here's a guide to help you prepare your home for photos, leading to those allimportant viewings. Do the work upfront to present your home in its best light. This will help secure the highest price when you sell.
Kerb Appeal With high mortgage rates, make sure your home looks its best to attract buyers and get the highest price. Spruce up the landscaping and paint the front door. Clean & Make Repairs Do a deep clean paying lots of extra attention to windows, skirting boards and fixtures. Consider hiring cleaners for a thorough job. This shows buyers the home has been well cared for. Fix minor repairs like leaky taps or creaky floorboards. Well-maintained homes suggest fewer problems, making buyers more confident.
Declutter & Depersonalise Declutter inside and store excess items. A cluttered home is difficult for potential buyers to imagine as their own. Depersonalise by removing family photos. But don't over-declutter or the home may seem bland. Fresh Paint & Bright Spaces Repaint in neutral tones to make rooms seem larger and brighter. Update lighting by cleaning windows, opening curtains and adding mirrors. A bright, airy home feels more inviting.
Market with an experienced local agent Strategically work with an experienced local agent with a good track record. List at an optimal time and realistic price. Use professional photography to showcase your home's best assets and attract the most viewings.

GOING THE EXTRA MILE! For over 20 years, we’ve been supporting our local communities and, as autumn rolls in, we wanted to reflect on some of the incredible things our offices have achieved over this year so far.
A
t the start of the year, off the back of our huge Barnardo’s £1 million campaign, we wanted to further help our community as locally as we could. So, we launched our local food banks and pantry campaign. With our customers’ help, we gave £100 to local foodbanks and pantries every time someone booked a free valuation with us, and we were able to donate over £750,000 to over 90 foodbanks and pantries local to our areas. During this campaign, our offices visited and volunteered in the food banks too, which was incredible to see. In the spring and summer of this year, we turned our attention to our charity partner, The Children’s Trust.
The Children’s Trust is the UK’s leading charity for children with brain injury and neurodisability. They deliver rehabilitation, education and community services through skilled teams who work with children, young people, and their families. So far this year, John attempted the London Marathon and managed to finish it, and we’ve done charity cycles and bake sales. Our colleagues at the other offices have done abseils, fancy dress days and
even a climb to Snowdon, all wanting to raise as much money as we can, totalling over £50,000 for The Children’s Trust so far this year! Our offices have even gone above and beyond in supporting their own chosen charities like Anthony Nolan, The Rainbow Trust, The Dogs Trust, Macmillan and so many other, deserving charities, leading our fundraising effort total to nearly £90,000… for now! So, why do we do it? Well, we believe that being part of the community is extremely important to us, and we have always wanted to support it in any way possible. Over the years, our community support has grown, and our offices take it upon themselves to enthusiastically engage in charity fundraising whenever they can for some amazing causes. Over the coming months, our offices are still undertaking various charitable endeavours.

Two options for losing weight By Heather Smith - Nutritionist & Personal Trainer Two Options for Losing Weight Option 1 - Cut your intake drastically, increase your activity and hold on tight. Option 2 - Make sustainable changes to your diet and exercise habits. Now, no one is going to tell you that option 1 won’t work. It will work, and it’ll work quickly. But, you’ll reach a long lasting, hard plateau fairly quickly. Then, you’ll need to cut your intake and increase your activity further and further – until you’re surviving on a tiny amount of food and spending all your time exercising. Worse, if you dare to take a couple of days off, or eat a little more, the weight will stick to you like glue. Sadly, this is a position many find themselves in.
Option 2, however, will get off to a bit of a slower start. Not much seems to happen at first but then the change starts to accelerate and snowball. This approach is much more sustainable both in terms of the habits you’re putting into place and in terms of the results you will see over the long term. It’s kind of like delayed gratification, except it’s not, because you’ll almost certainly never reach your goals with option 1. So, if you’re looking for true last-for-life results, don’t be tempted to do the most you possibly can – instead, do what is genuinely sustainable for the long term and work at consistently putting these changes into place. I think you’ll be surprised at how well this approach works for you. www.fitbiztraining.co.uk

Carers Support West Sussex…
Offering support to unpaid carers in the county. By Lynn Smith NHS England, defines a carer as “Anyone, including children and adults who looks after a family member, partner or friend who needs help because of their illness, frailty, disability, a mental health problem or an addiction and cannot cope without their support. The care they give is unpaid. Carers Support West Sussex (CSWS) is the amalgamation of three organisations who saw fit to become one. Registered with the charity commission in 2008, the charity is now fifteen years old and has been growing from strength to strength as the need for support of carers has grown. Sonia Mangan, CEO of Carers Support West Sussex, says that there is a nationwide need to provide support to these carers. CSWS is West Sussex’s support for those who are caring for someone. The charity is dedicated to offering unpaid carers the information, guidance and emotional support they need, whether the individual’s carer journey is a sudden responsibility or a lifelong commitment. “It’s (CSWS) aim is to deliver a well networked and supportive approach to each carer in the county, in the city, town or village in which they live, providing local solutions to family and friend carers.” Why is the charity necessary? Carers UK has provided key national facts that give context as to why the charity is needed: Over the period 2010-2020, 4.3 million people became unpaid carers – 12,000 people per day (Petrillo and Benett, 2022); fifty-nine percent of unpaid carers are women (Census 2011), women are more likely to become carers and to provide more hours of unpaid care than men, and more women than men provide high intensity care at ages when they would expect to be in paid work (Petrillo and Bennett, 2022). Also, one in seven people in the workplace in the UK are juggling work and care (Carers UK, Juggling Work and Care, 2019) and between 2010-2020, people aged 46-65 were the largest age group to become unpaid carers. In fact, 41 percent of
people who became unpaid carers were in this age group (Petrillo and Bennett, 2022). CSWS offers guidance and practical and emotional support Accessing this support, Sonia Mangan explains, begins with the carer making contact or being referred to CSWS, by a professional who has recognised a need for support. The carer discusses their caring situation with a wellbeing worker who can assess the best course of action. The charity doesn’t subscribe to the belief that one size fits all. In fact, they believe that every caring situation is different and should be treated with the respect and dignity deserved. One way of achieving this aim is via a statutory carer assessment. The purpose of this assessment is to determine the help and support which could be provided to the carer, which may include access to equipment or services offered by the council. During the assessment, common topics of discussion include: The carer’s role and how it affects their life; how the carer feels about caring and the options available; and the carers health and wellbeing, including physical, mental and emotional problems the carer might be having. The assessment will also discuss the carers relationships, social life and recreation, as well as employment, training, studying and volunteering, and planning for emergencies. All the support on offer to carers is completely free of charge. If a carer would like to join a carer group – whether that is face-to-face or online – or If they wish to receive carer benefits advice, or arrange for a

volunteer to do a regular check in and chat, all they need to do is register with CSWS. A twenty-six percent increase in carer registrations CSWS has over 30,000 carers registered and has seen a staggering twenty-six percent increase with them. During 2022 – 23, 5,301 new carers were registered with the service. And, according to the charity, the number of monthly registrations just keeps climbing and climbing. The charity points those carers who are new to caring, or those looking for more information, to the Carers Smart Search, accessed via the CSWS website. This simple tool takes a couple of minutes answering questions and guides the carer to the information they’re seeking. If the carer cannot find what they’re looking for a phone call to the charity should provide them with the help they need. Defining success CSWS’s vision, Sonia Mangan says, is to bring the day forward when family and friend carers are seen, heard, and included. During 2020, the charity’s trustees, employees and volunteers worked together with carers to review who CSWS
are, what they aspire to and the actions needed to achieve these aspirations. “The vision and the strategy are the driving force of the organisation. And so, success is defined by how we stack up against that vision and the six strategy aims.” There is regular consultation with carers to establish if their needs have changed, to ensure we are delivering the right services at the right time. We also constantly ask carers to give us their opinions about how we are performing. And with ninety-nine percent of carers saying they would recommend CSWS to other carers

Every address every month or friends and family, we must be doing something right. You can find out more about CSWS’s six strategy aims from the “Our Strategy for the future” report, available on the website. Carers Rights Day – Thursday 23 November 2023 Each year Carers Rights Day brings organisations together to help carers in the local community know their rights and find out how to get the help and support they are entitled to. This year the campaign will focus on the ways in which caring costs unpaid carers. Events will be running throughout the week and CSWS encourages carers to book their places in advance. Predominately funded by local government contracts CSWS receives most of its funding from West Sussex County Council (WSCC) with the remaining funding coming from grants and other trading facilities. Currently, CSWS has 118 employed members of staff and 73 volunteers. The charity relies upon the support of volunteers who Sonia Mangan describes as “Fantastic and assist in all areas. Last year,
volunteers contributed an incredible 146,704 minutes of volunteering. The volunteer run “check in and chat” telephone befriending service provided 20,910 minutes! Which helped carers feel more socially connected. “We are in the process of reviewing our volunteer roles, but will very much be recruiting for new volunteers very soon – so keep an eye out for the roles on our website. When I ask Sonia what the greatest challenge is facing CSWS, the response she gives is, sadly, a common one amongst the charity sector. “One of the greatest challenged faced by the charity is the ability, with the resources given, to keep up with demand. CSWS wants to ensure that each carer is given the time they deserve, which may mean that waiting lists may be longer than the charity would like. In this case the charity asks carers for their patience and understanding.” Contact Carers Support West Sussex The Orchard, 1-2 Gleneagles Court, Brighton Road, Crawley, RH10 6AD. Tel: 0300 028 8888. Go Green Behind the Wheel Eco-Driving Tips to Reduce Your Carbon Footprint Here are some tips to save fuel and money while helping the planet: Drive smoothly Sudden accelerations and hard braking waste fuel. Gently accelerate and coast more while anticipating traffic patterns ahead. Cruise control also helps maintain a fuel-efficient constant speed. Monitor your speed Speeding wastes fuel. Optimal fuel economy is achieved between 30-50 mph. Above 50 mph, fuel economy drops rapidly. Use cruise control on motorways to avoid speeding. Reduce idling Idling for over 10 seconds uses more fuel than restarting your engine. Cut idling time by turning off your engine if stopped for more than 30 seconds. Exceptions include heavy traffic jams.
Lighten the load Extra weight reduces fuel economy, so remove unnecessary items from your car. An extra 100 pounds can reduce efficiency by up to 2%. Also avoid using roof racks when not needed. Check tire pressure Under-inflated tires create more rolling resistance which reduces fuel economy. Check pressures monthly and before long trips. Proper inflation also enhances safety and tire lifespan. Limit air conditioning (A/C) Use A/C sparingly. At faster speeds, opening windows is more efficient than A/C. Park in shade to keep your car cooler. Schedule maintenance to ensure A/C runs efficiently. Following these simple eco-driving tips will boost your fuel efficiency, save money on fuel, and reduce harmful emissions.

Bury Primary School Residential trip for Buzzard class Buzzard Class Residential An amazing week was had by Years 5 and 6 at Hindleap Warren. Towers were climbed, pitchblack tunnels navigated and mud very much wallowed! We visit Hindleap every two years and always do so towards the start of term so that our new class has time together to bond as a new cohort. This year we started with some team building games before getting straight into some high
rope activities as the children navigated an aerial assault course. With archery, climbing and abseiling, and investigating underground tunnels, there really is something for everyone. However, the big highlight for our children was the forest adventure where the children follow a stream up-river before reaching the ‘mud Olympics’. The children wasted no time leaping in and choosing their swimming stroke! bury.w-sussex.sch.uk/website

St. James’ CE Primary School Update for November 2023 It seems unbelievable that we are moving so quickly through the school year; the lovely autumnal colours are all around us and there is a definite chill in the air. We have been a busy, happy school throughout the past couple of months and are very much looking forward to Christmas!
Celebrating Who We Are – Class Flags At St. James, we have four amazing classes: Penguin, Rhinos, Elephants and Jaguars. At the start of year, each class made a Class Flag which comes from the idea of creating a ‘tribal classroom’, helping to foster a sense of belongin g for everyone. Everyone contributes to the flag including classroom staff – and the flag stays up
all year round as a symbol of each class being a team. It’s a fantastic display to refer to; as the team gets stronger through the year, the flag is there to symbolise that. Harvest Celebrations We celebrated Harvest at the beginning of October and it was lovely to see so many parents/carers at St. Giles to share our Harvest Service with us. There was a wonderful and warm sense of community at the service and we truly valued the generous Harvest donations made by families. Alongside the community of St. Giles, the donations will be given to Petworth Food Bank where they will be distributed to people in need. St Mary’s C of E Primary School, Pulborough Harvest celebrations, planetarium visit & open mornings We plough the fields and scatter, Harvest Hymn and Harvest Samba helped us celebrate the harvest. Our Harvest Eucharist was led by Fr Paul, Mr Holloway and Mr Hancock and the children brought in toiletries, dried goods or tinned foods that were donated to Family Support Work, which is a school charity that we support. The gifts were displayed in St Mary’s church for the Harvest celebration there. To raise the children’s awareness of literature, we welcomed Antosh Wojcik as a visiting poet. He worked with Year 5 children and looked at nature as a stimulus for poetry. A collection of the children’s compositions is on our school website. They were so proud of their poetry.
Sussex Green Living roadshow came to the school to teach about recycling, composting and looking after our world. We are now recycling broken plastic toys with Tesco in exchange for books and we are recycling toothpaste tubes and we have a material recycling bin as well. We are looking after our world by doing our little bit!
We welcomed Herstmonceaux Planetarium to the school to start off the ‘Into the Beyond’ topic. A large dome allowed the children to really explore space, constellations and the planets. It is great to have the ‘experts’ coming in to school to give the children all the knowledge around space. We have Open Mornings and Open Afternoons coming up for parents and children to come and see the school in action. Please have a look at our website for more details. Combine half the gruyere into the spinach mix and add the gnocchi and remaining squash chunks into the dish. Simmer for 1-2 minutes until everything is heated through, you can add a splash of water if the mixture is thick. 5. Scatter over the remaining gruyere and pine nuts and place under the grill for a few minutes until golden and bubbling. www.mrandmrscheese.co.uk Ingredients at Village Larder - villagelarder.co.uk Weekly meal inspiration - @village_larder

Bury Parish Council
Finances and Highways updates Edited extracts from draft minutes of Bury Parish Council (BPC) meeting on 11th September 2023. Finances: • Review schedule of payments and bank reconciliations since last meeting. Resolved to approve schedule of payments since 10th July and the bank reconciliation for August 2023. • Consider variance report for actual vs budget expenditure Councillors resolved to approve the latest report. • Form a working group to discuss the budget for 2024-25 It was agreed that the Chair and Clerk would work on a draft budget to present at the next meeting. • Consider grant request from Bury Cricket Club. Council considered request for a replacement gang mower. The total cost was approx. £3,000 and Council agreed it would be helpful for the cricket club to cut the grass at the recreation ground instead of the Parish Council. Council resolved to grant £800 towards the cost. Confirm conclusion of Council’s audit 2022-23
resolved to approve external audit report and confirm conclusion of Council’s audit for 2022-23. Highways: To receive any update from the A29 RIC. Council informed that RIC was undertaking an acoustic survey which would produce a decibel graph and help enforcement action on Bury Hill. Believed that Police and Crime Commissioner and Sussex Police were becoming more minded to support an average speed camera. Advised revenue raised from speeding fines in Hampshire contributed towards purchase of speeding cameras but this was not the case in Sussex. To consider plans for a 20mph zone. 2 ways to pay for a Community Highways Scheme; fund it and have application expedited or wait for WSCC to fund it which may take a few years. Suggested 3 areas to potentially be covered by 20mph zone; village, outside primary school and West Burton and each area would cost around £1,500. Agreed to survey residents in autumn to gauge support. www.buryparishcouncil.co.uk
Coldwaltham Parish Council Does it take a fatality to get improvements to A29? Edited extracts of draft minutes of Parish Council meeting held on 26th September 2023. Purchase of Plaque. Two residents have approached the Parish Council and the Sandham Hall for a contribution towards the cost of a plaque for Pauline Streeter to recognise her contribution to the community, Members agreed in principle, the clerk asked for an invoice. A29. A councillor met in August with the officer from WSCC Highways who continues to maintain that the data does not support any further action on speed through the village. Coldwaltham, it appears is the most signposted village giving warning to various dangers along its stretch of the A29, but this is as far as WSCC will go. Again, it appears that there needs to be a fatal or near fatal accident to change this data. WSCC Highways would support us (at our cost) to bring into the village speed indicators systems, however, they have indicated their preferred systems and where they could be sited. The PC is waiting on their bid for funding from SDNP and a
response from Bury PC. The main issue continues to be vehicles overtaking on double white lines, on the bends and hills, and speeding. A29 - Church Hill. There is no change to the situation. The highways authority has a duty to keep the road open but have no control over the type of vehicles which use it. Separately, a Traffic Regulation Order is the pipeline for reducing the speed on the A283 between Pulborough and Storrington, but this would only be successful if it is policed consistently and catch the speeders at it. At the meetings held in Pulborough back in February/March, WSCC Highways had agreed to a review of the A29 after the situation on Church Hill had been resolved, the Deputy Head of Transport at WSCC promised this. Need to remind WSCC of their promise, lest it be forgotten. Post Office. There is a lot of unhappiness regarding the post office. Andrew Griffith MP has also written to the head of the PO requesting the resto ration of this vital rural service. www.coldwalthampc.org.uk

Fittleworth Parish Council A29 motorbikes; dangerous dog; new bus service Edited extracts from draft minutes of the Parish Council Meeting 18th September 2023. A29. A councillor has spoken with Bury PC, the Police and other bodies about the noise and speed of vehicles reported that the Police are using noise measuring devices and average speed cameras to reduce anti-social behaviour and issue Fixed penalty notices. The Police have been doing observations with drones and speed cameras and unmarked motorbikes. Last month 26 Fixed penalty notices for speeding motorbikes were issued and a similar amount for removal of silencers. There are some multiple offenders, so the Police are looking at those individuals. Using decibel monitors, the highest recorded was 108 Decibels. Dangerous dog. There is an Alsatian dog on Lords Piece that has mauled 3 dogs, please be aware. If you know who it is, please pass that information on to 101. 99 Flex bus service being introduced which will cover the Fittleworth area.
Swan Inn management are concerned about the amount of time it’s taking. Lead Planning Officer has been on site and the Heritage Officer is happy with the internal works, but it needs additional permissions for the roof. Boat on a trailer parked on School Lane – can we do anything as causing issues with parking on School Lane. If the trailer is attached to a vehicle that is taxed and insured, it is not illegal. The Clerk will approach the PCSO. Resident with disabled parking in Greatpin Croft reported other residents blocking his access and he asked the PC to support a request for double yellow lines. The Clerk will ask Hyde Housing if they know anything about it. Horse Chestnut Trees. Residents are reporting that the trees on the Recreation Ground are dying. The one nearest the shop is to be felled as it is diseased and dying. Another tree near the play area also needs attention. The clerk has contacted a tree surgeon for a written report. www.fittleworth-pc.org.uk

West Chiltington Parish Council Update for November 2023 Meet and Greet – 2nd December 10am – 12pm • It’s that time of year again. We invite all residents to come and chat, away from a formal meeting environment - find us in the Cricket Pavilion, Mill Road. • There will be displays of completed and current projects, and we always welcome ideas and suggestions for the future of West Chiltington. • We have an ongoing 5-year Plan working document – see what you think and we’d love your comments. • Free refreshments will be on offer – so why not meet your friendly Parish Councillors, find out what we do, and talk to us. Sussex Green Living event • Sussex Green Living Eco-Float arrived on a very hot Sunday to promote the use of reusable bottles and reduce plastic waste. • Parked alongside the Horticultural Show at the Village Hall, and the ladies facilitating the Eco-Float were very pleased to meet so many people who were interested to learn more about Refill, Reuse and Recycle. • The cost of this event was thanks to a HDC Community Climate Grant. Thank you to everyone who supported this event and for more information on local Refill centres go to: www.sussexgreenliving.org.uk/refill_service High Hedges • There have been some enquiries to the Parish Council recently about how high a hedge should be between neighbours’ gardens. • Information available online recommends approaching the neighbour and settle any disagreement amicably -clearly this is always the best option. • The best way to maintain a hedge is to maintain its agreed height. As a general rule, the higher a hedge grows the more costly it becomes to cut due to the equipment needed. For more information go to: www.gov.uk/ and search ‘high hedges’. This is a paragraph quoted from that site:
1)“You must try to settle a dispute about a high hedge informally before the council can intervene. 2)Ask your council for a complaint form if the hedge is all of these: 2 or more mostly evergreen or semi-evergreen trees or shrubs, over 2 metres tall, affecting your enjoyment of your home or garden because it’s too tall. 3)You might have to pay the council a fee to consider your complaint.” Planning Permission When considering additions or structural changes to your home or garden, you are advised to contact the Planning department of Horsham District Council to find out if you need Planning Permission - 01403 215100. If you go ahead without it and later on discover that you are in breach of Planning Control, it is possible that you may be asked to dismantle the structure. Pulborough Parish Council Anti-social behaviour, online survey & A29 works Anti-social behaviour The Parish Council’s stand at the recent village market, providing information on dealing with anti-social behaviour attracted plenty of attention. The core message was to please continue to report anti-social behaviour to the Police or Crimestoppers, so a profile of unacceptable behaviour can be collated. Online Survey We would like to thank the many who took the time to fill in our recent Parish Council Survey. A detailed report of the findings will be available shortly. Initial analysis shows that a significant number of respondents would like; weight/traffic restrictions on Church Hill and a Community Garden and Repair Café (watch this space). The survey also identified a lack of facilities for the youth in our community. A29 We understand the frustrations around the delays surrounding the commencement of the
main work at Church Hill on the A29. Recently three Parish Councillors met the landowners to discuss the current situation. The aim was to understand the matter from their perspective, prior to meeting WSCC Highways. It was very informative and constructive. We are seeking a meeting with WSCC Highways imminently and shall be asking pertinent questions. There are legal issues which need to be addressed before any work can begin. Parish Council Vision & Objectives We have agreed our vision: Pulborough Parish Council will work with our community, to enhance the environment, support local business and create a thriving Parish for all. To help achieve this we have agreed a core set of objectives and activities, details of which we shall publish in our business plan for the Parish Council, which will be available on our website shortly. Len Ellis-Brown, Chair of Pulborough Parish Council www.pulboroughparishcouncil.gov.uk
Andrew Griffith MP MP for Arundel & South Downs, November update Many residents had written to me in recent months genuinely fearful that they lived off grid in a rural area or an older property and had heard about plans to ban replacement boilers from 2026.
Around 1 in 5 households across our community are estimated to be off the gas grid, many of them pensioners on limited means, so this was a very real concern. Removing this fear of an impending boiler ban was one of the pragmatic and proportionate measures announced by the Prime Minister this month.
There’s plenty of examples of fantastic enterprise like this across West Sussex and I plan to nominate many local businesses myself so please do get in touch with me with your ideas. Andrew.Griffith.MP@parliament.uk www.andrewgriffithmp.com Andrew at Kithurst Hill on the South Downs Way
