home at 13 can be a wrench for even the most confident teenager. The real crux of the matter for independent schooling is the fees. The SFIA Group (www. schoolfeesadvice.org), which helps parents with school fee planning, estimates that parents of day pupils can expect to pay an average of £3,400 per term (possibly more if they attend a boarding school on a day basis) and £7,800 per term for fullboarding. Gather info. The Good Schools Guide is a great starting point! Also look at school websites and Ofsted reports. Ask schools for their last three years’ exam results and a list of schools/universities their pupils move on to.
Weigh up impressions. And canvas the opinions of current parents (bearing in mind that some can be reluctant to admit that the school they’ve chosen could do better).

But I spent many childhood holidays in this area and I think it’s a great unsung part of the world.’ She says three things about the house particularly appealed to them. One was the beautiful vista down the valley to Rye Bay – on a clear day you can see the White Cliffs of Dover 40 miles away. Another was the weather. ‘Being an American, David asked me to check the weather statistics. The coast from Eastbourne to Dungeness has the most hours of sunshine and lowest rainfall

? What Ditchling is delightful: a medieval downland village with a high street lined with charming, timber-framed buildings and a café, pub and food store painted cool contemporary grey. At the foot of the South Downs, the steep slopes of Ditchling Beacon provide a dramatic backdrop. You want to frame it. Ditchling would be idyllic if it weren’t for the perpetual crawl of traffic through its narrow streets.
