he Sussex House Party is a brand new retreat and party site in the

middle of the East Sussex countryside. Its eight acres of field and woodland, bell tent village and ‘big green bus’ have already made it the destination for wilderness weddings, arty parties, nature kids’ camps and some serious glamping. Now hostess Gilly Smith, writer and journalism lecturer, is planning her own fantasy retreats offering writing workshops, reading and plenty of good food and company. The August mid-week break is a yoga retreat, featuring meditative dreamwriting and cowboy cooking in the evenings. There’s accommodation in the house, but it’s the bell tent village and

OPINION STYLE

The e-cigarette is the most effective driver of smoking cessation that has ever existed. It gives smokers all the ‘hit’ but none of the health risks

but there is absolutely no evidence to support this; in fact, the ASH report concludes that e-cigarette use among both adults and children is ‘confined almost entirely to those who have already tried smoking’. The other popular claim is that vaping in pubs etc. could threaten to undo all the ‘good’ work of the smoking ban by ‘renormalising’ social smoking... but isn’t that a bit like worrying that the presence of horse brasses could renormalise the oppression of the agricultural underclass? Of course, nicotine itself is still a highly addictive substance, so there’s every chance that some people will simply end up getting as addicted to e-cigarettes as they once were to normal ones. But if we accept – as all the available evidence says we must – that the electronic version is safer, less anti-social and even much cheaper than the real thing,

and poses no danger whatsoever to anyone who might be standing nearby. Even the hard-line anti-smoking group ASH now accepts this (for the full report, go to http://ash.org.uk/ files/documents/ASH_715.pdf), but many of its supporters are still refusing to: the devices have already been banned outright in Belgium, Denmark and Norway, and Wales looks set to become the first UK nation to prohibit their use in enclosed public spaces. Our government’s chief medical officer recently said that e-cigarettes were one of the three biggest ‘health challenges’ facing Britain today... but what possible grounds could she have had for this? Many people seem to believe that e-smoking (oh, go on then – ‘vaping’) is becoming some sort of gateway to proper smoking for millions of impressionable youngsters who would never have so much as scrounged a drag otherwise, JULY 2014 | WWW.SUSSEXSTYLE .C O M | 1 3

3. LOVE SUPREME Fast becoming one of the must-see live music events of the year, the Love Supreme Jazz Festival will present an array of international stars when it returns to Glynde Place this summer. The acclaimed three-day event boasts the likes of Grammy and Golden Globe winner Jamie Cullum, first daughter of soul, Lalah Hathaway, double Brit Award nominee Laura Mvula, legendary R&B outfit Soul II Soul featuring original vocalist Caron Wheeler, Grammy awardwinning Gregory Porter and alternative hip-hop pioneers De La Soul. 4th – 6th July www.lovesupreme festival.com

4. PADDLE ROUND THE PIER The world’s biggest free beach and water sports festival arrives on beautiful Hove Lawns and features the very best in water, street and urban sports, live music, kids’ entertainment, ‘have a go’ opportunities and lots more. WORTHING BIRD MAN OK, so it’s maybe not the swanky ‘society’ event you might expect to see on our social events calendar but for sheer British silliness it’s hard to beat the Birdman events – and they do raise a lot of money for charity. Where else do you get to see groups of optimistic but misguided fools dress up and hurl themselves off a pier in the pursuit of, well, some sort of flight (and a £10,000 prize)? From the country that brought you Monty Python, we bring you the Worthing Birdman. 12th – 13th July www.worthingbirdman. co.uk

8. GLORIOUS GOODWOOD Summer events don’t come much more traditional and glam than Glorious Goodwood. Often referred to as the official closing party of the summer season, the festival blends beautiful fashions, a star-studded social atmosphere and top quality sporting action. The racecourse is awash with colour, the crowd a vibrant sea of panamas, Pimm’s and panache. The scene is set for the worlds of fashion, high society and horseracing to come together for five enthralling days. 29th July – 2nd August www.goodwood.co.uk

5. PETWORTH FESTIVAL This year’s programme once again features a range of performers rarely seen outside the major cities. The classical music programme includes acclaimed tenor Ian Bostridge, leading violinist Tasmin Little and American pianist Garrick Ohllson. Comedy, jazz and cabaret events include the West End hit The Only Way is Downton, jazz singer and Radio 2 regular Clare Teal and Harry Strutters

6. FROSTS LADIES DAY Part of the three-day Festival of Racing, The Frosts Ladies Day has grown in popularity each year to become a real fixture in the season’s calendar. Last year, it attracted a bigger crowd than the opening day of the festival (it’s on day two), with not only a great day of racing, but a chance to get dressed up too, with a stunning white diamond necklace from James Ross Jewellers awarded to the

some 12 years beforehand and was hardly a newcomer by any other industry’s standards). Yet she has consciously shirked celebrity-dom, deliberately turning down roles that would have taken her more firmly down that television celebrity status route. ‘I was a jobbing actor before I was in EastEnders, and I went back to being a jobbing actor afterwards. Eight years ago, the notion of being a celebrity was not considered compatible with being a serious actor.’ However she acknowledges that times have changed, and nowadays you can be both a celebrity and still have an acting career; the likes of Angelina Jolie perhaps a case in point. At last month’s summit, where Oberman was involved in the staging of a series of monologues based on the testaments of victims of abuse and violence, she witnessed how the role of ‘celebrity’ can be used to your advantage. ‘Angelina Jolie is my complete hero,’ she says. ‘I met her very briefly. This is a woman who is passionate about the subject. She has done her research and she has used her celebrity to make things happen and open up a dialogue, exposing rape as a weapon of war, and calling for the current situation – where it is the victims rather than the perpetrators who are shamed – to be addressed.’ Maybe Oberman will reconsider her career in the light of the new role of celebrity. Or maybe not. For this is a woman who seems never to have been out of work and rarely off screen, stage or radio in a notoriously insecure profession. In retrospect it seems ironic that her family, concerned about job security, were worried when she chose an acting career. Immigrants in the (real) East End, they were all

or more than 100 years, Shoreham Airport has welcomed schemers and dreamers who

believe that the sky’s the limit to their ambitions. Lord Sugar is just one of the high-fliers who have used the airport, situated on the floodplain between Lancing and Shoreham. The airport is famous for its annual air show and has seen action as a location in the movie version of The Da Vinci Code, an episode of Agatha Christie’s Poirot stories, and the Eighties BBC TV series Tenko. A BRIEF HISTORY OF SHOREHAM AIRPORT 1910 Harold Piffard, an artist based in London, set up a flying strip on a piece of grazing land near the river in Shoreham. Keen aviators AV Roe, Cedric Lee and the brothers Cecil and Eric Pashley were among the first to try out the new airport.

1911 Shoreham was the starting point for the first recorded cargo flight when Horatio Barber, in his Valkyrie monoplane, flew a box of Osram light bulbs to nearby Hove.

1925 Cecil Pashley, with his Avro 504, teamed up with the Miles brothers to form the Gnat Aero Company. Activity on the airfield increased in the second half of the decade, with Southern Aircraft Ltd and the Southern Aero Club. Shoreham hosted many flying meetings and air shows when famous flyers such as Sir Alan Cobham visited.

1930 The municipal authorities of Brighton, Hove and Worthing formed a joint committee to establish Shoreham as the municipal airport for the three towns. Construction on the Terminal Building began in November 1934.

1939 International airline operators were removed from London (Croydon) Airport to Shoreham with the outbreak of World War II. Among the operators were Sabena, DDL, KLM and the predecessor of British Airways, Imperial Airways. Destinations served by the airlines included Copenhagen, Amsterdam and Brussels. Following the Nazi invasion of France and the Low Countries in 1940, the passenger traffic to and from Shoreham stopped, and the Royal Air Force took over the airport. The squadron was involved in the rescue of nearly 600 airmen from the Channel.

1951 Fred Miles returned, along with his brother George, to set up aircraft manufacture and development work on site.

1971 Shoreham became a municipal airport again, under the control of the three local councils, and passenger services and general aviation became the focus of attention. The Terminal Building is now a Grade II-listed building and is still used every day for business, pleasure and training. Many of the fixtures are original, including the Whispering Gallery on the first floor and the window design above the main entrance.

IN SEASON: STRAWBERRIES Why do people insist on buying strawberries in February? They taste so much better when they are in season (May to August since you ask) and haven’t been crammed into lorries and bumped across Europe. These sweet scarlet berries really are nature’s candy. They don’t need to be dolled up with fancy sauces or chocolate. Simple slice them into a bowl and gently dust with a little icing sugar and 10 minutes later they will have created their own delicious syrup. Always serve strawberries at room temperature and never straight from the fridge – it mutes their fragrant flavour. And if you’ve never been strawberry picking then this year you should really give it a go. For more strawberry recipes visit my blog www.comfortablyhungry.com

GET JUICING People often ask me what the ultimate juice recipe is for cleansing, weight loss, detox and skin vitality. If I could only recommend one, it’s this one. This, my friends, is the big one: 1 handful spinach 1 handful kale 1 handful rainbow chard 1 freshly squeezed orange 1 stick of celery 1 small beetroot 2 carrots 1 handful flat leaf parsley 4tbsp coconut water 1 knob ginger 1 tsp chlorella powder 1 tsp spirulina powder 1 tsp wheatgrass powder 1 tsp maca powder

Holland & Barrett and most local health food shops sell an organic range by Naturya and these are the four super heroes of them all: Chlorella powder – honestly? This looks and tastes as if it’s come from a swamp. That’s because it has! Chlorella is a chlorophyll-rich pond algae. Good for normalising blood pressure, blood sugar levels, cholesterol and removing toxins. Spirulina – a blue/green algae grown in lakes. This is one of the most powerful superfoods known to man. It has four times the antioxidant ability of blueberries. Good for alleviating allergies, it’s an exceptional source of protein: gram per gram more so than beef, poultry, fish, and soya beans. Wheatgrass – there’s no getting round this; it tastes awful but the benefits are worth it. This green vibrant plant purifies the liver and blood, and is just what your body wants after a heavy night. Maca powder – the new musthave superfood. A magnificent mix of minerals, protein, iron and calcium. This root plant, similar to ginseng, grows at high altitudes on hostile terrain in the Peruvian Andes. It is dug out of the ground, dried in the sun then milled into a malty tasting powder. Its health benefits are impressive. It is claimed – not proven – that Maca improves: energy levels, muscle mass, muscle fatigue (ideal to mix into your post-workout protein shake) sexual function (boosting libido and increasing endurance), hormonal balance, menstrual issues (alleviates cramps, mood swings, anxiety, and hot flushes). Putting your hand in your pocket Financial education at home usually starts with the doling out of pocket money, although this can be a contentious issue in some households. On the one hand it can be seen as a good thing to reward children for undertaking chores around the house. However, some people would argue that these chores should be done as a matter of course with no financial incentive. After all when was the last time somebody gave you money for doing the washing up or the ironing? Then there is the issue of how it should be given. With so many of our financial transactions now digitised, such as downloading games for a mobile phone, is there still a place for cash? ‘I think pocket money is a great

catching gimmickry is king, and if you’re the first person on the web to do something, it MUST be cool – even if it looks dead stupid. But at least the famous narcissists are getting richly rewarded for their public humiliation; what’s supposed to be in it for the rest of them, eh? Ah. Well, I suppose I should probably interrupt myself at this point to say I do accept that not all the fruits of the social media revolution have been bitter buggers. Quite apart from the fact that it’s been a significant driver of social and political progress in many parts of the world, it’s also genuinely improved the lives of thousands of perfectly sensible people in this country alone who just wanted to make a few like-minded friends. There’s nothing wrong with that! (Hell, I’d probably even have given it a go myself, if I wasn’t convinced that I have too few interests to make a decent Facebook page and would be too much of a cry-baby for Twitter...) And, you know, we could probably even go as far as to say that it’s performing a valuable public service by keeping narcissists occupied in a way that drastically reduces their chances of having any impact on the real world. I don’t know, though... I think I actually feel a bit sorry for them. It all looks so tiring, for one thing. Having to constantly worry about what’s hot, what’s not, who your friends are and where your next ‘selfie’ is going to be taken must be the next worst thing to having a full-time job in PR, with the crucial difference that there’s no money in it and you know from the outset that nobody’s ever going to be even half as interested in the product/talent/y ou as you are. The only times anyone should ever have to sell themselves are at job interviews and on first dates, yet these poor suckers spend half their lives doing it – and the harder they try to sell themselves, the more they give away. Sadder still is the fact that if any of them did somehow manage to join the ranks of the genuinely famous, you just know they’d only screw it up by getting all depressed and moaning about how they now felt like the world had them at a disadvantage (just look at Robbie Williams!). The sense of validation a narcissist gains from finally becoming king of the heap is no less fleeting than it would be for a much smaller triumph (humiliating a waiter, say), so even if one of them should succeed in proving that they have more objective grounds for happiness than any of their peers, the only thing they can ever do for an encore is to start competing over who can be the most miserable instead. There’s a disadvantage, if you like...! JUNE 2014 | WWW.SUSSEXSTY LE.COM
