This month’s contributors Gaynor Wetherall After many years on Fleet Street at The Sunday Times Magazine and Evening Standard, guest editor Gaynor Wetherall turned her love for all things fashion to become a shopping queen – writing and editing magazines for leading retail destinations. Her Suburban Girl column in ES magazine became infamous for her drunken antics and flaming Sambuca party trick and although she still loves to party, she is now far better behaved with new friends, Pinot & Grigio.
Kathryn Flett As a former Fashion Editor of The Face magazine and Editor of the mens’ magazines Arena and Arena Hommes Plus there’s not much Kathryn Flett doesn’t know about style. The former Observer newspaper columnist and TV critic-turned-novelist left London in the mid-noughties for St Leonards-on-Sea, where she lives with her two sons, two (male) guinea pigs, two (male) cats, her (male) partner, his two sons... and a new (male) whippet puppy. When there’s too much testosterone flying around at home, Kathryn often escapes to her beach chalet retreat down the road.

Sofie Allsop Having started working as an estate agent in Notting Hill Gate, Sofie hit our screens in October 2006 working alongside Phil Spencer in Britain’s Best and Worst Places to live for Channel 4. Sofie then joined both Phil and Kirstie for the 2007 special and also for Phil & Kirstie’s Property Guide for More4. Sofie went on to film three Series of Unsellables in Canada and USA for HGTV. Sofie also filmed a UK version of Unsellables UK, for the BBC. She has also worked with ITV’s This Morning as their property expert offering advice on everything from mortgages to first time buyers.

EDITOR’S LETTER
O WELCOME TO THE OCTOBER ISSUE OF SUSSEX STYLE
I
don’t think any of us need a geography lesson to know that London is the capital of
the UK but that doesn’t make it the centre of the universe. Each and every county has its own style, celebrities, bespoke boutiques, fabulous restaurants and unique
atmosphere. Sussex has all of this and more, in abundance. I have been meeting
and discovering such a wealth of talented and exciting locals in my role as guest
editor, adding more than a touch of va va voom to The Glam Issue.
In this issue, Sofie Allsopp shows us how we can maximise the space in our homes with stylish storage solutions while Annie Oulton gets hot under the collar discovering if electric
cars really can ramp up the green factor. Norman Miller takes a trip down memory lane at the National Trust’s first ever property, Alfriston Clergy House, while Sam Bilton whets the appetite with more delicious food and drink.
We chat to Brighton-based fashion designer Ong-Oaj Pairam, fresh from his debut show
at London Fashion Week and certainly a name to look out for, as well as catching up with design guru David Davies who among numerous commissions was responsible for firmly stamping Next onto the high street.
St Leonards resident and acclaimed journalist Kathryn Flett writes about the town’s best-
kept secret, Norman Road, known as The Portobello of the South, and read how DFLs (Down From Londoners) are flocking for a slice of St Leonards’ eclectic life.
Finally, I hope you find Daniel Raven’s Confessions of a Middle-Aged, Middle-Class Drinker
as amusing as I did. I nearly choked on my ‘cheeky’ glass of Pinot (all will become clear when you read the feature) as I imagined what the Daily Mail would have to say about
the matter. In their world, the middle-aged, middle classes don’t binge drink. In reality, it’s exactly this group who are doing it – and I should know.
For the uninitiated who may be under the impression that suburban life is dull and dowdy, Sussex Style laughs at the very idea – we have the very best of both worlds – with the urban put firmly in surburban…
I do hope you’ll experience plenty of the style and glamour this region has to offer during October and see you in November… Gaynor Wetherall
We’d love to hear your comments, views and suggestions for Sussex Style so please email me: editor@SandRpublishing.co.uk

Take a walk on the wild side Revered by the Greeks, Romans and ancient Britons alike, wild boar ceased to be a common feature of our dining table centuries ago. So valued was wild boar for recreational hunting that by the 17th century it was virtually extinct in England. Fast forward a few hundred years and we are now seeing wild boar return to our woodlands and our plates. This is cause for celebration in Rye where a week long festival to celebrate this hairy beast starts on 26 October.

Coffee Break of the Month Baltica, Lewes I have a weakness for cake to which my hips will attest. I know I should resist but sometimes it’s just too hard. Initially I was drawn into Baltica by the distinctive Polish pottery they sell in the shop. But then I saw it. A solitary slice of Makowiec (poppy seed cake to the linguistically challenged like me) and I had to have it. Light, moist and slightly citrussy it tasted every bit as good as it looked.
A fascinating bottle of wine made from grapes that have been partially air-dried to intensify the flavour. Its combination of rich fruit, spice and herby finish will complement almost any wild boar dish.
And the Fairtrade coffee wasn’t bad either. If the sound of this cake has whetted your appetite for more Polish fare Baltica offers other delicacies such as Pierogi (filled dumplings) and Bigos (meat and sauerkraut stew). ❖ Baltica, 145 High St, Lewes, East Sussex 01273 483449 baltictrader.co.uk
