As road transportation in Tajikistan grows in popularity, carbon emissions are predicted to rise. The country’s capital dushanbe has begun the very first monitoring scheme as a first step toward reducing emissions from the transport sector.

The city of Dushanbe has begun to measure road pollution with a monitoring scheme as a first step to gain control over its emissions and improve livability for its citizens.

With just 863,400 residents, the relatively small capital city is taking efforts to better understand traffic flow, intensity, and emissions levels from the city. This information allows cities to determine where they should direct mitigation efforts, and the data is vital in creating policies and new infrastructure that can improve air quality, safety for pedestrians, and lower emissions from the transportation sector.

Tajikistan is the lowest contributor of GHG emissions in Central Asia in both absolute and per capita emissions, and is responsible for just 0.02% of global emissions. However, levels of private vehicle usage in Dushanbe have grown, and in 2014 it was estimated that the transportation was responsible for 13 times as much air pollution as the industrial and energy sectors. The city plans to adopt targeted measures aimed at investing in alternative fuels and improved vehicle efficiency.
