What is Organic?

Definition as per USDA National Organic Program (NOP): Organic food is produced by farmers who emphasize the use of renewable resources and the conservation of soil and water to enhance environmental quality for future generations. Organic meat, poultry, eggs, and dairy products come from animals that are given no antibiotics or growth hormones. Organic food is produced without using most conventional pesticides; fertilizers made with synthetic ingredients or sewage sludge; bioengineering; or ionizing radiation

Before a product can be labeled ‘organic’, a Governmentapproved certifier inspects the farm where the food is grown to make sure the farmer is following all the rules necessary to meet USDA organic standards. Companies that handle or process organic food before it gets to the local supermarket or restaurant must be certified, too

Experts suggest that the market is conducive for further growth and acceptance of Organic food

Tom Vilsack Agricultural Secretary

“ … consumer demand for organic products has grown exponentially over the past decade. With retail sales valued at $35 billion last year, the organic industry represents a tremendous economic opportunity for farmers, ranchers and rural communities… “

Karan Chechi Research Director, TechSci Research

“ … the organic food market contributed about 4% to the country’s overall food market in terms of revenues during 2010. Furthermore, the retail organic food market is an emerging trend in the country. Therefore, with the increased consumer food expenditure of about 7.67% during 2010-12 the demand for organic food through retail sales medium is anticipated to increase …”

Diane Dempster Organic specialist, Charlie’s Produce

“ … it (organic food) used to be a fad … but now it’s mainstream. And it just keeps growing. I don’t see that changing … People are interested in health … They want to know where their food is coming from, who’s growing it, and that it’s safe. And they’re willing to pay more for it … ”

Jack Sinclair Executive VP, Grocery, Walmart

“ ... we know our customers are interested in purchasing organic products and, traditionally, those customers have had to pay more … we are changing that ...”
