THE NEW RENAISSANCE Deconstruct the past/Reconstruct the future SUTHINI TANANGSNAKOOL
THE NEW RENAISSANCE TREND The twenty-first century appears as a period of rapid change. Although our culture follows a linear concept of history and time, it is difficult to pinpoint our era. Where are we in history’s timeline? Are we moving forward or returning to a known past? Living in uncertain times, we are looking forward to new directions. Unable to foresee a viable future, we start looking back to a fecund golden past. People have looked at the past as a source of inspiration many times in history. The famed Italian Renaissance, believed to be one of the most innovative and flourishing periods in history, was itself a revival of ideals from the ancient (Greco-Roman) civilization. Is it possible that a time for revival of this golden age arrived again in the twenty-first
century? Is returning to the past a way of changing from a linear timeline to a circular concept of time? During the Renaissance period, humanism was much emphasized Instead of painting and writing about biblical stories, art in Renaissance focused on human. Instead of blindly following, we started to question belief and investigate the truth. For example, in The Birth of Venus, Botticelli portrayed Venus in a realistic human form, making a mythological figure secular. Leonardo Da Vinci is a prime example of Renaissance humanism. His expansive expertise in multiple areas such as art, science, mathematics depicts the basic principles of Renaissance humanism, which is considering human limitless in the potential of developments.
His artworks also showed a strong humanistic value. For example, he recognized the beauty of everyday life and painted a normal woman, Mona Lisa instead of religious or royal figures. Or in the Last Supper, Leonardo Da Vinci chose to contradict popular religious conceptions and paint Mary Magdalene. Michelangelo depicts human as God-like perfection, as seen in David. In a contemporary era that science is over-valued and the role of human is being overshadowed by computer, the revival of Renaissance is a reminder of returning to humanism. Therefore, through deconstructing five quintessential examples of Renaissance humanism, we will once again reconstructing the basic humanist values of society.

THE MANNEQUIN Identity Reproduction Melting pot
Living in a circular time, we are moving forward blindly with no concrete goals nor direction. At the age of uncertainties, we are struggling to identify ourselves, and often feel the need to be distinguished. One of the most common as seen is to purchase merchandise that could provide us identity. In Florence, Michelangelo’s David reproduction has made David lost his identity. Nobody actually knows the slightly differences between each white statue. Are we close to arrive that condition? The more we are trying to be different , the less uniqueness we are.

UNDERCOVER boundary blurring Self - Reflection
Equality is the art element used in monalisa painting. Today, equality increasingly appears in gender and age. People can act in ways that no longer necessarily correspond to their physical sex and age. The relationship between 2 opposite things is growing in the way they understand each other better. Today, it is normal to see fashionable matured people on street or men in women wear. People can reflect themselves in anyway they want to be, as we see monalisa painting, and also hide the dark side at the same time.
