Radio stations wishing to broadcast a game from Eccles Coliseum should alert the SUU Media Relations Office well in advance of the broadcast date. Two phone lines are available for visiting stations, but radio box space is limited. Visiting stations are advised to limit broadcast teams to three persons. Southern Utah’s coaches and players are cautiously optimistic heading into the 2011 season, their final campaign in the Great West Conference before next year’s jump to the Big Sky. There are a handful of reasons for that optimism: 1. The Thunderbirds return 16 starters, including nine on the offensive and six on the defensive side of the ball as well as their placekicker, from the 2010 squad which claimed the school’s first GWC championship. 2. They have nine returning players who earned first-team all-GWC honors last year, including three who were firstteam selections by both the coaches and the media. They’re also an intelligent bunch, as eight were named academic all-GWC, including five starters and three who were primary reserves at their positions in 2010. 3. They have two pre-season all-Americans: returning allconference selections Brad Sorensen, a junior quarterback, and Tyler Osborne, a senior defensive end. 4. Once again the coaching staff returns intact. Over the last four seasons the team has lost just one full-time coach, so there has been great stability in the staff as the team has continued to improve. 5. The Thunderbirds head into the season ranked among the nation’s top-25 FCS squads by several publications, including 16th by The Sporting News. The only things that might temper the team’s enthusiasm about the upcoming season are a schedule which includes just four home games, as well as the task of replacing the players lost to graduation – something every school goes through every year. As far as the schedule goes, while Lamb would undoubtedly rather have at least one additional home game, he likes the way it shapes up. With the opener at South Dakota State – a rising power from the Missouri Valley Conference – he says the team will have a challenge from day one. “I like the way the schedule lines up,” Lamb notes. “It’s a good challenge for our guys. The first game is on the road against an established program with a strong winning tradition in a major [FCS] conference, so right from game one I think we have a microcosm of our season. “If we can’t beat good football teams on the road, throughout the season, consistently, then we’re going to have a poor win-loss record at the end of the year,” he adds. “We can’t just win our home games and steal a few road games here and there and have any sort of a season that can be deemed successful by our own standards.” Lamb also notes this is the first time the squad has had the pressure of dealing with being ranked heading into the season. “We’ll find out early in the season if we can live up to the hype. We haven’t had to deal with being ranked in the top-25 by most pre-season polls, we haven’t had to deal with that in the past. We haven’t had to deal with having an abundance of upper-classmen with returning all-conference honors, that’s a new challenge.” After inheriting a team that went 0-11 in 2007, the new staff’s challenge was getting the players to believe they could compete with the other teams on the schedule. Last year’s team proved to itself that it could play with anyone it played, suffering just one lop-sided loss all year. Now, Lamb points out, the challenge is to avoid overconfidence. “I don’t know if our team’s aware of it yet, but our coaching staff is very aware, and we’re going to be preaching the message hard, that gone are the days where we have to convince our players that we can compete with anybody. Now the challenge for us to teach our players that any team on our schedule can beat us.”

The Thunderbirds open the season Sept. 3, at South Dakota State, then host Sacramento State in the home-opener on Sept. 10. First-time opponent Texas-San Antonio visits SUU on Sept. 17, before the ‘Birds head down I-15 for a match-up with UNLV on Sept. 24. The quest for a second consecutive GWC crown begins at home on Oct. 1, when the Thunderbirds host North Dakota. The team then travels to South Dakota (Oct. 8) and Cal Poly (Oct. 15) for two more conference games before taking a break from GWC play at Weber State on Oct. 22. Southern Utah’s final GWC game will be Oct. 29, when UC Davis visits Cedar City. The team then wraps up the regular season with two road games, traveling to Northern Iowa for a Nov. 12 contest, and to Northern Arizona for a match-up on Nov. 19.

OUTLOOK: OFFENSE It would be easy to single out Sorensen – the team’s second Payton Award Watch List member in as many years (sincegraduated WR Tysson Poots was so honored last year) – as the offensive key to the team this year, but Lamb also points to the offensive line. “Maybe the most exciting position for us, as coaches as we enter the season, is the offensive line,” Lamb says. “We have all five starters from a season ago returning, but maybe more significantly, there are several players that we feel are good enough to start or have become good enough to start through last spring and the summer.” Sophomore Gavin Farr (6-foot-3, 300 pounds) anchors the unit. As a redshirt freshman, he was named the GWC offensive lineman of the year by the media in 2010. Also returning are guards Zach Brackus (6-5, 325, Jr), and Trevor Schauerhamer (6-5, 324, Sr), and tackles Brandon Beddes (6-5, 312, Sr) and Brock Christensen (6-6, 306). Each of the five earned some kind of all-conference recognition last year, with Farr, Beddes and Schauerhamer earning a spot on both the media and the coaches’ squads. “If there is such thing in football, [Farr] is a self-made man,” Lamb says, noting that when he was recruited he was 6-2 and

and any of those nine guys could be starters,” Lamb says. Depth will be provided by a handful of young players, including Greg Reid, Eric Chandler, Robert Krotz, Alex Topete and Zac Russell. If the line is the spot on the offense with the most returning experience, the position with the least would be receiver, Lamb points out. Poots and Fesi Sitake claimed the lion’s share of the receptions last season, with Robert Ah Sue getting most of the rest, but all three of those players have graduated, leaving the race for receptions fairly wide open. Seniors Jared Ursua (5-11, 192) and Myles Crawford-Harris (6-0, 190), sophomore Fatu Moala (6-2, 185) and redshirt freshman Easton Pedersen (6-3, 200) had the edge coming out of spring ball, but a handful of newcomers and JC transfers, including juniors Matt Putnam (6-2, 195) and Mike Clore (6-0, 185), and freshmen Myles Carelock (5-11, 170), Logan Parker (6-4, 205), Josh Smith (5-11, 170) and Brady Measom (5-9, 165), hope to be in the mix as well.

260 pounds, which is considered undersized for the SUU system. “But he grew to 6-3 and 300 pounds, and although he’s still significantly shorter than the other guys, he’s more in our mode.” Regardless of his size, he’s made an impact. “Almost from day-one on campus he’s insisted on being the starting center, and he makes it all go on the offensive line … he was definitely deserving of the offensive lineman of the year [award] by the media. In my opinion that’s an honor that describes him well,” Lamb says. Brackus “has been a solid, quiet leader for us from the time he stepped on campus,” Lamb notes. “He’s very consistent in what he does, he shows up in a workmanlike fashion for practices and games, and he does just a great job.” Schauerhamer “is a big-bodied guy who has really developed himself as an athlete ... He had a lot of natural size and strength and bulk and then he really worked on what would have been his weakness, and I think on game-day he really shows up as an effective player because of all the hard work he’s put in.” Christensen “brings a tremendous passion to the game, and I think that’s evidenced by how he’s changed his body, from the time he was a high school senior at 190-something pounds to being 310 pounds now and one of the strongest players on our team,” Lamb points out. “He’s really done a nice job in every way in attacking the work that we’ve asked him to do and it shows up in his play.” Beddes is “one of our fastest offensive linemen and his commitment through the offseason has been significantly increased over when we first recruited him [from Snow College], so I really think he’s going to come close to maximizing his potential this season, based on his work ethic,” Lamb says. In addition to the returning starters, the O-line is bolstered by a handful of players Lamb says the staff feels are good enough to start. That group includes Cody Burgess (6-6, 315, So), Devin Tavana (6-3, 300, Sr), Daron Griffin (6-4, 365, So) and Russell Peterson (6-4, 319, Jr). Peterson has been a spot starter and a reserve at every position except center the past two seasons, while Tavana come to SUU as a junior college allAmerican out of Snow College last year. “I would say we have nine veterans with game experience

Ursua has “been a guy we think could have been in there … catching a share of the passes but with the guys ahead of him he just didn’t have a lot of opportunities,” Lamb says. “Jared’s been a guy who has delivered consistently over the last three years when we’ve asked him to, so we’re anxious to see what kind of a leader and producer he’s going to grow into.” Moala’s game is “a lot like Fesi’s. He’s very skilled, he can change directions, he’s one of these guys where you watch him play pickup basketball, or I’m sure any other sport, whether he’s played it or not … he can be the best guy in the room. He’s very skillful.” Pedersen “had a good spring for us. He’s really effective in using his big body in man-to-man and short-yardage situations, goal line situations. He was probably our most respected receiver in the spring at creating space for himself. Crawford-Harris is perhaps the most intriguing of the bunch. Originally a cornerback, who earned a few starts in the defensive backfield as a true freshman, he asked to move to the offensive side of the ball in spring after the cornerback position became a bit crowded. The experiment worked out and now he’s

battling for the top spot at the X receiver position. “Myles finished the spring very strong, working with the wide receivers for the first time; he had been a DB and had been a starter in the defensive backfield at times, so it was a risky move for us to move him to receiver, but he asked to do it and we had some other corners who were slightly in front of him – Myles was slated as the starting nickel – and I think he’s made a good decision for himself, I think he has a good future at receiver,” Lamb notes. Another position where the team is strong and deep is at running back, where Austin Minefee (5-10, 195, Sr) and Deckar Alexander (5-7, 178, Sr) return after leading the team on the ground the past three seasons. Veterans Brian Wilson (6-0, 210, Jr), Mike Tagliaferri (5-11, 206, So) and Henna Brown (6-0, 225, Jr) are all pushing for playing time as well. Minefee earned all-GWC honors last season after piling up 1,021 yards and five touchdowns rushing and receiving. He led the team’s backs in 2009 as well (544 rushing, 229 receiving yards, 5 TDs), while Alexander was the team’s second-most productive back last year with 520 yards and the top back in 2008. Lamb expects both to be better in their senior seasons. “Both those guys have had tremendous summers,” the coach says. “They already were some of the strongest guys at their position, maybe at our level of football, and now they’re even stronger, they’re even more fit and ready to go. “We have an excellent group of running backs behind those guys, and any one of them, in my opinion, have all-conference ability: Brian Wilson, Mike Taliaferri and Henna Brown. So it will be interesting to see how the running back position plays out. There’s not going to be any room for a guy protecting his body, not playing full-out 100 percent. If guys can’t secure the football consistently … one or two fumbles could put you out for the season.” At fullback the team has three players, each with his own skill set. Senior Daryl Brown – a team captain – plays a hybrid fullback/tight end/H back role; Dylan Fox, who has played linebacker, offensive line and tight end in addition to excelling on special teams, is the top blocking back; and Lavell Ika has a combination of skills. Jacob Allie, a redshirt sophomore, will pro-

vide depth as well. “Daryl could potentially be in the mix at tailback but certainly will be at fullback, and at tight end, and at the slot receiver position. We use him quite a bit as a wing, kind of a hybrid tight end and fullback spot,” Lamb says. “He wasn’t recognized as all-conference last year and he wouldn’t be, he usually finishes with a handful of catches and a handful of carries and a bunch of blocks, but as far as what we do there’s nobody that’s more important to our offense than Daryl Brown.” At tight end Abbel Aiono (6-3, 265, Sr) earned honorable mention all-conference honors last year, and Lamb says he is another player who could be poised for a break-out season. “He’s got a little preseason publicity, I think because he’s one of the only returning starters in the conference at his position … and I don’t think it’s undeserved, I just think potentially this year he could have an exponentially more productive season than he has in the past,” Lamb notes. “His speed, his agility, his confidence, everything for him has really improved over a year ago.” Providing depth at the tight end spot will be three players, freshman Anthony Norris (6-4, 195), sophomore Jamison Gann (6-5, 245), a transfer from Colorado State, and junior Chris Haning (6-4, 225). At quarterback, Sorensen (6-5, 225, Jr) completed 261-of390 passes for a school-record 3,163 yards and 21 touchdowns last year, earning a unanimous selection as the first-team allGWC signal caller, and a spot on this year’s Payton Award Watch List. He was tabbed by at least one writer at ESPN.com as the top player at the FCS level heading into this season and has been named a pre-season all-American by several publications. He is the team’s first returning starter at the position since Lamb and his staff took over in 2008. After three years of teaching the system to a new starter each season, the staff is elated to have him back. “This is the first year [this staff] will have a returning starter at quarterback, with Brad, so we’re excited about that potential,” Lamb points out. “That’s going to be important to us, to have that player with some understanding already of how he can operate

the offense, because that’s what our offense is made to do, to have the quarterback actually have the freedom to make calls at the line of scrimmage and change the play. In the past it’s been half a season before we get to that [point]. In the past three years … I bet there would be a pretty steady progression each season from about mid-year to the end of the year as our quarterback has progressed in his knowledge of the system.” A look at the statistics bears Lamb out, both in total and passing yards as the seasons progressed. Last year, when the team piled up over 400 yards of offense seven times, five of those games came in the second half of the season. Five of Sorensen’s top seven passing yards games also came in the second half of the season, and he didn’t have a completion percentage under 64 percent in the final six games. Sorensen’s strengths, according to his coach, are many. “He’s got a really strong, accurate arm,” Lamb notes. “He’s got the height .... he’s really mature, he’s got some life experiences, he’s a little older, he’s got a calm, poised demeanor out on the field, but he’s also very competitive.” The team also has several reserve quarterbacks, including redshirt sophomore J.J. Mayer (6-2, 205), sophomore transfer Roman Neville (6-2, 190, Jr) and freshman Brady Arnone (6-3, 190). “J.J. Mayer comes into the season as the backup,” Lamb says. “J.J. did a really nice job in the spring, and because of the person and the work ethic J.J. has, the student he is, a student of the game and an academic student, we have a lot of trust in him.” A native of Utah, Neville prepped at Box Elder High, before spending a season at San Bernardino Valley College, the same school at which Sorensen spent his freshman year. He completed 161-of-267 passes for 2,070 yards and 23 touchdowns last year, earning first-team all-conference honors.

As with the offense, one of the strengths on the defensive side of the ball is up front. Four starters return on the D-line, although they may not necessarily return in the same positions

One who will remain in the same position is Osborne (6-2, 245, Sr), a consensus 2010 first-team all-conference performer who has been named a pre-season all-American by several publications. He led the squad with seven sacks and 18.5 tackles for loss last year, when he also finished with 54 tackles from his rush end position.

OUTLOOK: DEFENSE

Jeff Tukuafu (6-4, 262, Jr) returns at the strong-side, or bull end position after notching 19 tackles, with 3.0 TFLs, including 2.5 sacks. Returning starters who may make a move this year include Cody Larsen (6-4, 272, Jr), and Nick Witzmann (5-11, 270, Jr). Larsen was the starter at nose tackle last year and he wound up tied for third on the team with four sacks while piling up 29 total tackles, but he will move to tackle this season. Witzmann played in a rotation with Cody Heinreich (6-4, 260, Sr) and Brad Meyer (6-3, 280, So) at the tackle position last season, and those three could again team to man the nose. Witzmann had 15 tackles with two TFLs and a sack, while Heinreich had 14 tackles, including four sacks and six TFLs, and Meyer finished the season with six tackles, including a sack. “We’ve got four starters returning at the defensive line spot, that’s really exciting for us,” Lamb points out. “Even with four starters returning there’s going to be tremendous competition. Right now all four of those guys aren’t slated to start, the way that we have it. “We anticipate being able to move Cody Larsen to our defensive tackle position instead of playing the nose, especially in some pass rushing situations. He’s the same big strong guy that he was when he was playing nose, but he is also leaned up, he’s got improved quickness, he’s worked hard on his pass rushing ability and we’d like to emphasize that in our system with a position change.” “Jeff Tukuafu was a starter at the strong side defensive tackle for us, he’s had a great off-season, he’s bigger and stronger, and then Tyler Osborne – who really sets the standard for our whole team, in the weight room and the way he trains in

the off-season, in terms of toughness and the tenacity he plays with – he will be the rush end for us again,” Lamb goes on to say. “He was our leading tackle-for-loss and sack producer a year ago. “Last year the nose position was occupied by Larsen and we rotated some other guys in the tackle position Heinreich, Witzmann and Brad Meyer. This fall we anticipate some of those guys who were playing tackle fighting for the starting nose position. Witzmann has the most experience and has been the most consistently productive, but Brad Meyer showed some real flashes last year in his first year off of a mission, he’s much better now that he has a whole off-season under his belt. Cody Heinreich is a really gifted athlete who is still learning the game of football and we’re excited as he keeps progressing through his career because I think at any time he has the ability to really step up and be a really good player.” In addition to the players battling for stating spots, senior Eddie Mailoto (5-11, 240, Sr) returns to back up Osborne, and a handful of young players, including redshirt freshmen Nick Nissen (6-2, 275) and Kouri Jones (6-4, 235) and true freshmen Toi Taufa (6-1, 260) and Brody Swanson (6-3, 255), will provide depth. The linebacker position is a bit of a question, with just SAM ‘backer Blake Fenn (6-1, 224, Sr) returning after starting last season, leaving a battle at both the middle and weak side positions. A three-year contributor, Fenn led the team with 97 tackles last year, earning second-team all-conference honors. He will be backed up by sophomore Randall Nygren (6-2, 225, So), a converted quarterback who has taken to the defensive side of the ball. “Blake was our leading tackler last year, we’re really counting on him to set the standard for the linebackers,” Lamb says. Senior Drew Willard (6-3, 236), who has seen spot start duties and has been a regular in specialty situations, is the only other linebacker with starting experience. He is in the mix in the middle, along with redshirt sophomore Chad Hansen (6-3, 235) and redshirt freshman Austin Anderson (6-5, 205). Willard had 20 tackles last season.

“Drew Willard has played some starting roles for us, in nickel and short yardage situations, he has been considered a starter by us,” Lamb notes. “But the other two haven’t had any game experience with us yet, that position will be a battle.” At weak side linebacker, two players who have considerable experience as reserves, Herman Sword (5-11, 215, Sr) and Rickey Clark (6-2, 225, Jr) will battle for the starting position. Sword had 10 tackles last year while Clark tallied seven stops. “Herman Sword and Rickey Clark have both played significantly on special teams and sparingly on defense but they’re both working really hard for that position so it should be a fun position battle to watch in fall camp,” Lamb says. The secondary also took a hit with the loss of four-time allGWC cornerback Colin Pretlow, but consensus first-team allGWC safety Erron Vonner (5-11, 188, Sr) and cornerback Dion Turner (6-0, 195, Sr), who was a first-team selection by the coaches and a second-teamer on the media list, both return. Both will be keys again, Lamb says. “What we do in the secondary is all predicated on having a great man-to-man corner, and [Turner] has done that for us,” he points out. “He’s incredibly competitive and really talented. We’re really counting on him to continue to produce the way that he has. “At the strong safety position we have a returning all-conference player and one of our leading tacklers last year, Erron Vonner; he had a great off-season and we’re excited about his senior year,” Lamb adds. Vonner finished the 2010 season with 60 tackles, including 4.5 TFLs, and he broke up a team-high seven passes as well. Turner moved to corner from safety prior to the 2010 season and it was a good move, as he tallied 54 stops, broke up four passes and had an interception.

Pretlow’s replacement looks to be junior Marlon Hogains (511, 175), a converted wide receiver who had a solid season last year as the nickel back, while there is a three-way battle at free safety between senior Tyson Turley, who had 17 tackles as a reserve last year, and JC transfers Brennan Fjord (6-0, 195, Jr) and Ryan Comer (6-1, 200, Jr).

more consistent and more accurate than Colton, so going into camp it’s going to be Brock as the field goal and PAT kicker and Colton as the kickoff guy.” Sitake, Brown and Wilson were the team’s top three kick returners last year, when Brown finished second to Sitake with nine returns but had the best average, at 24.6 yards per return. Wilson averaged 22.7 yards per return, second-best on the team. Sitake was also the punt return specialist the past two seasons and the coaches will look at a variety of players to replace him, with Ursua the front-runner coming out of spring ball. As far as the punting goes, the team brought in Tate Lewis (6-6, 220) to take over and expectations are high for the freshman from Fremont High School. “We’ve brought in a freshman punter to start, Tate Lewis,” Lamb notes. “We’ve put a lot of pressure on him and he’s going to have to learn quickly. We certainly have some depth, both Brock and Colton are capable punters, and Fatu Moala is a capable punter, but we recruited Tate for the position. He’s 6-6, 220 pounds, and he’s got all the leg he needs. He’s from the same high school as [former SUU all-America punter] Trevor Ward and they’ve been working together all summer. So, I hope we have the next great punter here. I think he has the makings, if he works hard and makes the transition from high school to college, he can be a great one.”

“Marlon played really well in the time he was able to come in as our nickel back last year,” Lamb points out. “It will be exciting to see him play more often, because he is really a good player. “The free safety position was vacated when Matt Holley went on a mission, so we really attacked that,” the coach went on to say. “Number one we have a returner in Tyson Turley, who’s been a good player on special teams for us and a depth player at the safety position so I know he’ll be working hard for the starting free safety spot. Then we got the two starting safeties from Snow College, Brennan Fjord and Ryan Comer, so I think we’ll have a nice three-way battle for free safety.” There are also some talented returning players and newcomers in the secondary, including junior Cameron Morgan (6-3, 195), sophomore Tyree Mills (6-2, 175) and freshmen LeShaun Sims (6-0, 175) and Gordon Garrett (6-2, 185), who figure to be reserves at the corners. Garrett redshirted with the team in 2008 before serving an LDS church mission. Senior Zack Olsen (6-0, 175), sophomore Tommy Collett (60, 175) and freshman Miles Killebrew (6-3, 197) will provide depth at safety.

OUTLOOK: SPECIAL TEAMS

As far as special teams go, the Thunderbirds return placekicker Brock Miller and kick returners Henna Brown and Brian Wilson, but will be looking at new faces on both ends of the punting game. Miller earned honorable mention all-conference honors last season after continually improving through the year and winding up as the team’s second-leading scorer with 63 points. He hit 27-of-28 PATs and 12-17 field goal attempts, with a long field goal of 50 yards. Miller will handle the placekicking, while newcomer Colton Cook, a former Utah Mr. Soccer at Viewmont High, will handle kickoff duties. “We had a nice battle between Brock Miller and Colton Cook for our placekicking jobs in spring, but coming out of it, it looks like Colton will be the kickoff guy,” the coach explains. “He’s got a big leg and we’re excited about that, and Brock was

Lamb is also excited about his kick coverage unit. “When we put together a travel squad, the first thing we do is find the kickoff coverage guys,” he says. “Those are the most highly valued players on our team. Last year we had some really solid kickoff coverage guys, one of those was Mike Tagliaferri, and we had some other guys like Mike who also played considerably on offense or defense, but one player who didn’t play at all on defense who was one of our best kickoff coverage guys was KC Rawlinson, so any conversation about special teams has to start with those kick coverage guys, and KC is probably at the front of that group with the way he plays. Around him we put the very best football players on our team. Dion Turner, Erron Vonner, Mike Tagliaferri, those type of guys – very good players ¬for us – have been the kickoff coverage guys. I’m sure there will be many of our starters on offense and defense that are running down with KC.”

A 2010 Eddie Robinson Award finalist and the Great West Conference's 2010 Coach of the Year for football, Ed Lamb is entering his fourth season as head coach of the Thunderbird program. In his first three years overseeing the program, Coach Lamb has guided the team on a path that has seen it improve from the 0-11 squad he inherited to last year’s Great West Conference championship team. During his first year at SUU Coach Lamb turned around a program which had been mired in a 19game slide, and while the 2008 team finished with just four wins, those were four more than the program had in any of the previous three seasons. SUU also broke through with its first road-win in four years when it claimed a 34-30 victory at Southland Conference champion and 22nd-ranked Texas State in 2008. That same season Lamb oversaw a program which put 11 players on the all-Great West Conference squad, including seven first-team selections as well as its special teams player of the year. The Thunderbirds finished the 2008 season ranked among the nation’s top-20 teams in punting and punt returns, passing offense and tackles-forloss last year as well. The improvement continued in 2009 when the team finished with a 5-6 mark, its best record since 2004. The team ranked among the nation’s top-20 programs in passing, pass efficiency, total offense, scoring offense and punt returns in addition to leading the nation on net punting. The Thunderbirds had two all-Americans in 2009, placed 12 players on the all-conference squad and had 14 academic all-conference selections. SUU had individuals ranked among the nation’s top 10 in pass receptions, receiving yards, total offense, punt returns and scoring as well. Last year the team continued its ascent, as the

T-Birds claimed their first Great West championship with a perfect 4-0 mark in conference games, posted an overall 6-5 record, the team’s first winning record since 2004, and finished the season ranked among the nation’s top-30 in both the coaches and the media polls. Among the team’s five losses, only one came by more than eight points. SUU dominated the all-GWC teams last year, with 10 first-team selections, four on the second-team and three more earning honorable mention. SUU wide receiver Tysson Poots was a consensus first-team All-American and the GWC's offensive player of the year in 2010 after ranking among the top four in every statistical receiving category. In all, SUU had five players ranked among the nation’s top-50 performers in 10 statistics categories last year, and the team ranked among the top-30 in 10 categories as well, including fifth in passing offense and 10th in both total offense and passing efficiency. Lamb came to SUU from the University of San Diego, where he served as special teams coordinator, recruiting coordinator and defensive backs coach for three years. A 1996 graduate of Brigham Young University, Lamb helped guide the University of San Diego to three consecutive Pioneer League championships as well as back-toback NCAA Division I-AA Mid-Major National Championships in 2005 and 2006. In 2007 the USD special teams ranked first or second in the Pioneer League in every statistical category and the defense finished 2006 ranked fourth nationally after the Toreros completed an 11-1 season. While at USD Coach Lamb’s responsibilities included serving as the team’s budget manager and recruiting in addition to his on-field responsibilities. Prior to joining the Toreros in 2005, Lamb spent two seasons as defensive coordinator at the University of Idaho where his 2003 team finished second in the Sun Belt Conference in scoring defense. As part of his duties as coordinator, his primary responsibility was with the Vandal secondary. Coach Lamb spent the 2001 season on the BYU staff as a defensive assistant working with the linebackers. While with the Cougars he helped the squad to a 10-2 record and a Mountain West Conference title. Lamb served as defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at the University of Redlands from 1998 through 2000, where his teams went 21-6 overall and boasted the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference’s top scoring defense every year he was with the program. He also served as the Bulldogs’ recruiting coordinator. Prior to becoming defensive coordinator at Redlands Lamb spent one season as a graduate assistant working with the defensive line. As a student-athlete, Lamb played linebacker and defensive end from 1992-96 on Brigham Young University and BYU-Idaho teams which combined to win four conference championships. Lamb and his wife, Sarah, are the parents of three daughters: Anna, Amelia and Summer, and son Claude Edward IV.

Offensive Coordinator Steve Clark is in his fourth season on the Thunderbird staff. During his first three seasons at SUU, Clark has overseen an offense that has made an assault on the SUU passing record book. Each of the past three years the offense has re-written significant sections of the Thunderbird books. Under his guidance the 2008 Thunderbirds passed for a school-record 23 touchdowns while the team’s 2,742 passing yards ranked second on the school’s all-time list but the 2009 squad went on to better both those marks, passing for 3,103 yards and 33 TDs. SUU also set singlegame records for passes and completions, as well as individual season and single-game passing and receiving records in both seasons. Last year’s squad passed for 3,257 yards, another record, including four of the top-10 passing-yard games in SUU history. Last year the Thunderbirds had five players named first-team all-Great West Conference by the coaches, while two more earned second-team honors and another received honorable mention. Wide receiver Tysson Poots was named the league’s most valuable player on offense while quarterback Brad Sorensen was a unanimous firstteam selection. As far as individual efforts under Coach Clark go, three top single-season passing attempts efforts, the four top single-season receiving yards efforts, and three of the top four completions and passing yards efforts have come in the past three seasons. Coach Clark came to SUU from BYU, where he spent three seasons working with the offensive line and special teams. While on the Cougar staff, Clark helped BYU to a pair of Mountain West Conference titles and three straight Las Vegas Bowl appearances. In 2007 he coached the MWC’s top kickoff return squad, which ranked 18th nationally. Coach Clark spent the 2004 season on Urban Meyer’s staff at the University of Utah, where, as a defensive assistant, he helped the Utes to a perfect season. That year Utah finished the season ranked fourth in one poll and fifth in the other after putting together a perfect 12-0 record, capped by a 35-7 thrashing of Pittsburgh in the Fiesta Bowl. Utah had three first-team and one second-team all-MWC honorees on the defensive side of the ball that season.

Prior to the 2004 season, Coach Clark served two seasons as the passing game coordinator at St. Mary’s College. In 2001 he was director of football operations at Utah when the team represented the MWC in the Las Vegas Bowl. During his coaching career, Clark’s teams have gone 4-1 in bowl games, 2-0 at Utah and 2-1 at BYU. Prior to joining the collegiate coaching ranks, Coach Clark cut his coaching teeth at Provo High School, where he was the Bulldogs’ offensive coordinator from 1995 to 1998. A 1992 graduate of BYU with a degree in communications, Coach Clark and his wife Suzanne are the parents of four children, Alex, Emily, Jamison and Maggie.

Justin Ena is in his fourth season on the Thunderbird staff, his second as defensive coordinator. He will also serve as the team’s linebackers coach. During his first two seasons with the Thunderbirds Coach Ena headed up the special teams while also working with the team’s linebacking corps. Last year, in his first season as the Thunderbirds’ defensive coordinator, Coach Ena headed up a unit which had some of the top single-game efforts in school history. In the season-opener at Wyoming, the T-Birds held the Cowboys to just 36 rushing yards, the second-fewest by an SUU opponent from the FBS ranks in the school’s history. Two weeks later, at San Jose State, the ‘Birds limited the Spartans to 57 yards on the ground and 250 total yards. Sandwiched between those two games San Diego managed just 34 passing and 153 total yards; the Torero’s passing total is the sixth-lowest by an SUU opponent. At the end of the 2010 season the SUU defense had given up just 3,407 total yards, the third-lowest total in an 11-game season in the school’s history, including 1,279 rushing yards, the fifth-lowest total in an 11-game season. The 2010 defense ranked 21st in the nation against the run, 21st in total defense and 17th in scoring defense after allowing just 19.18 points per game. SUU also ranked 24th nationally with 2.45 sacks per game and 25th in tackles for loss with 7.09 per game. The coaches voted five Thunderbird defenders to the all-Great West Conference first team last year, with two more earning second-team recognition and another receiving honorable mention. In 2008 and 2009 Coach Ena’s special teams were among the finest in the country. In 2009 punter Trevor Ward earned multiple all-America honors after leading the nation in yards per punt while Fesi Sitake was seventh in the nation in punt return average. As a team, SUU led the nation in net punting and was ninth in punt return average. In 2008 return specialist Nick Miller led the nation in all-purpose yards and ranked fifth in punt return yards. Ward earned honorable mention all-America honors in 2008 after ranking sixth in the country in net punting yards and eighth overall. SUU’s punt return team ranked third in the country in net yardage while the punt cover team was sixth. All three of SUU’s specialists, Miller, Ward and kicker Steve Pulver, earned first-team all-Great West Confernence honors as well.

Coach Ena played his collegiate ball at Brigham Young University, where he was a four-year starter and a three-time all-Mountain West Conference performer at linebacker. Following his collegiate days, Ena moved on to the National Football League, where he played four seasons – including three for the Philadelphia Eagles and one for the Tennessee Titans – before retiring. The job at Southern Utah represents Coach Ena’s first collegiate coaching position. His first coaching experience came in his hometown of Shelton, Wash., where he was an assistant on the staff at Shelton High School while he rehabbed a knee injury prior to attending BYU. Coach Ena and his wife, Dana, are the parents of two children, a son, Justice, and a daughter, Olivia.

Paul Peterson is in his fourth season on the Thunderbird staff. Coach Peterson wears many hats on the SUU staff, including passing game coordinator, recruiting coordinator, quarterbacks coach and receivers coach. During his first three years on the staff Coach Peterson has had a huge hand in revising the SUU offensive record books, particularly the passing game records. In the past three years the Thunderbirds have set and reset most of the team’s single-seasonpassing records, including passing yards, pass completions, passing touchdowns and pass attempts in a season. The single-game records have also largely been re-written in the past three years. Coach Peterson has also worked with the three of the most prolific quarterbacks and two of its all-time great receivers in the past three seasons. In his Peterson’s first year as quarterbacks coach quarterback Cody Stone rewrote many of the single-season and single-game records, then the following season, in 2009, Cade Cooper bettered most of the season records. Last year Brad Sorensen threw for more yards than any quarterback in SUU history and had the second-highest total yards mark. The Thunderbirds have been well-represented on the all-Great West Conference team in each of Coach Peterson’s years at SUU, including last season when WR Tysson Poots was named the conference’s most valuable offensive player. Quarterback Brad Sorensen was a unanimous choice to the all-GWC first team by both the coaches and the media, the only player to earn a unanimous berth, and he and Poots were joined by three teammates on the first unit, while two more earned second-team honors and another received honorable mention. A graduate of Boston College, Coach Peterson quarterbacked the Eagles to a pair of bowl victories and was his team’s MVP following the 2004 season. While at BC Coach Peterson earned a pair of Big East Conference Player of the Week awards and he was named MVP of the Continental Tire Bowl as well as the 2005 Boston College Person of the Year. A Recipient of the Boston College Senior Leadership Award, Peterson led the Eagles to a 12-2 record as a starter and he finished up second on the team’s career passing percentage list. Prior to attending Boston College Coach Peterson earned JC Gridwire All-American and honorable mention academic all-America recognition at Snow College, where

he was a two-time team captain as well as a two-time allconference performer. As a sophomore at Snow Peterson led all NJCAA quarterbacks in passing yards and touchdowns. After graduation from BC Peterson played for the Ottawa Renegades of the Canadian Football League before returning to Snow College, where in 2005 as quarterbacks coach he helped the Badgers to a 9-2 record, a No. 8 national ranking and a Top of the Mountain Bowl championship. The following season he moved on to Brigham Young University, where he served as an offensive graduate assistant, helping the Cougars to an 11-2 overall mark and a final No. 15 ranking after they claimed a Mountain West Conference title and a victory in the Las Vegas Bowl. Immediately prior to joining the Thunderbirds, Coach Peterson spent the 2007 season as a defensive graduate assistant at North Carolina State, where he worked under Coach Tom O'Brien, one of his coaches at Boston College. Coach Peterson is married to the former Meagan Davies. They are the parents of three sons, Owen, Mack and Cal.

Ryan Hunt is in his eighth year on the Thunderbird staff and his seventh as a full-time member after serving the 2004 season as a student-assistant. Coach Hunt has worked with the offensive and defensive lines, with the last three spent on the defensive side of the ball. Last year SUU’s run defense was one of the best in the school’s history, as the Thunderbirds held opponents to just 1,279 yards on the ground, the program’s fifth-best effort in an 11-game season. The 2010 defense also ranked third in SUU’s 11-game history in total yards allowed, giving up just 3,407 yards. The 2010 defense ranked 21st in the nation against the run, 21st in total defense and 17th in scoring defense after allowing just 19.18 points per game. SUU also ranked 24th nationally with 2.45 sacks per game and 25th in tackles for loss with 7.09 per game. Two SUU linemen earned all-Great West Conference honors last season, end Tyler Osborne and tackle Cody Larsen. In 2008 Coach Hunt’s unit ranked 18th in the country in tackles-for-losses and he saw two of his players, defensive tackles Austin Curtis and Aaron Fernandez, earn firstteam all-GWC recognition. Curtis was also an honorable mention all-American in ‘08 after ranking among the nation’s leaders in both sacks and tackles-for-loss. In 2009 defensive tackle Chad Westwood earned all-conference honors. Coach Hunt spent the 2006 and 2007 seasons as offensive line coach before moving back to the defensive side, where he began his coaching career. As offensive line coach, Hunt helped mold a unit which improved the Thunderbird offense in almost every statistical category. SUU’s rushing offense improved by nearly 71 yards per game, moving it up 51 spots in the national rankings from 2005 to 2006, and in 2007, despite playing one of the toughest schedules in the country, the SUU offense continued to improve. In 2004, Coach Hunt helped coach a Thunderbird defense that ranked sixth in 1-AA total defense, including a No. 7 ranking against the run. In 2005 as a full-time member of the coaching staff Coach Hunt coached three allGreat-West honorable mention defensive linemen. A 2003 graduate of SUU, Coach Hunt was a threeyear starter at offensive tackle for the Thunderbirds before joining the staff. While playing for the Thunderbirds Coach Hunt started 33 straight games from his sophomore to

senior seasons, never missing a game during his career. Hunt has coached 10 all-GWC performers while at SUU: Osborne, Larsen, Curtis, Fernandez, Westwood, OL Mike Knight, OL Matt Roan (three times) and DL Levi Erickson, Derek Hood and Jason Ripley. A native of Erda, Utah, he is a graduate of Tooele High School, where he was an all-state and all-region performer. Coach Hunt is married to the former Sami Melling.

Demario Warren is in his fourth season as the Thunderbirds’ secondary coach. After joining the Thunderbirds initially as a running backs coach, Warren made the shift to the defensive side during 2007 spring ball. Last year, SUU’s defense was among the nation’s best overall, ranking 21st against the run and 22nd overall at the end of the regular season. It was one of the most improved defenses in the nation last year. Coach Warren headed up a secondary last season which featured three first-team all-Great West Conference performers, cornerbacks Colin Pretlow and Dion turner and safety Erron Vonner. It was Pretlow’s fourth straight first-team honor, Vonner’s first, following an honorable mention appearance in 2009, and Turner’s first. In 2009, under coach Warren’s tuteledge, Pretlow and safety Akeem Anifowoshe were both named first-team allGWC for the second straight season, but Anifowoshe moved to linebacker in 2010, where he earned his third consecutive all-conference honor. In 2008, along with Pretlow and Aniofowoshe earning all-GWC honors, another SUU defensive back, DeWayne Lewis, signed a free agent NFL contract with the Jacksonville Jaguars and he is currently playing with Team USA. Coach Warren came to SUU from UC Davis, where he was a three-year letterman at running back before injuries cut short his career during his senior season. Coach Warren earned a starting spot with the Aggies in 2005 as a redshirt freshman when he finished second on the team in rushing. A native of Fairfield, Calif., Warren prepped at Fairfield High School, where he was a four-sport letterman. Coach Warren earned his bachelor’s degree in African-American studies from UC Davis and has gone on to earn his Master’s of Business Administration degree. He and his wife, Amanda, are the parents of two children, Demario, Jr., and Jazelle.

Teag Whiting is in his third season as a member of the Thunderbird staff, his second in a full-time capacity. After serving as a graduate assistant with the Thunderbird offensive line in 2009, Coach Whiting took over as O-lilne coach in the spring of 2010. Last year the Thunderbird offense passed for a school-record 3,257 yards, the fifth-best mark in the nation, and the Thunderbirds finished 10th in the nation in total yards behind Coach Whiting’s offensive line. SUU had three linemen named the the All-Great West Conference team, first-teamer Trevor Schauerhamer and second-team selections Gavin Farr and Brandon Beddes, while a fourth, Brock Christensen, earned honorable mention. Farr was named Most Valuable Lineman on the media team, with Zach Brackus earning first-team honors while Schauerhamer and Beddes were honorable mention picks in 2010. In 2009, in his first season with the team and in the coaching ranks, Whiting worked with an offensive line that boasted a pair of first-team all-Great West Conference selections, tackles Levi Mack and Aarron Po'uha, as well as a second-teamer, center Stephen Boyer. SUU's offense was prolific in Whiting's first season with the team, as the Thunderbirds ranked among the nation's leaders in passing yardage, total offense and scoring. Coach Whiting was a two-year starter at Brigham Young University, where he earned honorable mention allMountain West Conference honors as an offensive lineman before going on to spend two seasons in the NFL, primarily with the Arizona Cardinals. Prior to his time at BYU, Coach Whiting was an all-region, all-conference and all-America performer at BYU-Idaho (then Ricks College). A native of Salt Lake City, Utah, Coach Whiting prepped at Salt Lake City’s Brighton High School, where he was a two-time all-region and all-state performer in football as well as a state champion wrestler. Coach Whiting and his wife Ashley are the parents of a son, Dallas.

Ronnie Pentz is in his third season as a member of the Thunderbird staff, his second as special teams co-coordinator. Last year, as coordinator of the kicking game, Coach Pentz oversaw a unit which ranked 14th in the nation in kickoff return yardage defense. He also coached redshirt freshman kicker Brock Miller, who showed steady progress throughout the season, moving from reserve to starter and eventually earning honorable mention allGreat West Conference honors after leading the team and ranking 35th in the nation in scoring with a 7.0 points per game average. In addition to working with the Thunderbird special teams, Coach Pentz works as an assistant on the defensive side of the ball, primarily with the T-Bird linebackers. In 2009 Coach Pentz worked with four-time all-Great West Conference 窶話acker Robert Takeno, who led the team with a 98 tackles. Along with Coach Justin Ena, he was also instrumental in the development of the other Thunderbird linebackers. A 2008 graduate of the University of San Diego, Coach Pentz was a first-team all-American as a senior and a two-time first-team all-Pioneer Football League performer at linebacker for the Toreros. As a senior Pentz was second on the squad in tackles with 80, including 45 solo stops and 4.5 sacks. He tallied 26 tackles as a junior before an injury cut short his season, had 40 tackles as a sophomore and 47 as a redshirt freshman. Coach Pentz also excelled in the classroom, earning academic all-PFL honors all four years he played for the Toreros. Born in Stone Mountain, Georgia, Pentz prepped at El Toro High in Lake Forest, Calif., where he was a two-time all-league honoree.

Justin Walterscheid joined the Thunderbird staff in the spring of 2010, taking over the duties as the program's running backs and receivers coach. In the fall he added co-special teams coordinator to his resume. Last year Coach Walterscheid’s running backs rushed for 1,485 yards, the team’s most in four seasons and tailback Austin Minefee earned first-team all-Great West Conference honors after leading the Thunderbirds with 764 rushing yards as well as picking up 257 receiving yards. His return specialists also fared well, with Fesi Sitake averaging 10.8 yards on punt returns and 22.6 on kickoff returns to earn all-GWC recognition while Henn Brown averaged 24.6 yards per kickoff return. In addition to Minefee and Sitake’s all-GWC honors, tight end Abbel Aiono earned honorable mention recognition in 2010. A former receiver and return specialist for the Thunderbirds, Walterscheid led the Thunderbirds in all-purpose yards in 2003 and was second on the squad in 2004 when he was sidelined for three games by injury. He led the squad in punt and kickoff return yards in both '03 and '04 and his '03 effort of 291yards ranks fourth on the SUU single-season list, just behind his dad Leonard’s 319 yards in 1975. He is also sixth on SUU's career punt return yardage list with 450 yards and eighth on its kickoff return yardage list with 836, while his career kickoff return average, 23.9 yards per return, ranks fifth. Coach Walterscheid earned his bachelor's degree in physical education from SUU in the spring of 2005. He then went on to earn an additional BA in kinesiology from Mesa State College in 2008. Upon graduation from MSC, Walterscheid embarked on pursuit of his master's degree in sports management at the University of Utah, where he served as a graduate assistant on the No. 18 Utes' 2009 Poinsettia Bowl championship squad. While at Utah Walterscheid worked with the receivers and return specialists as well as holding in-game responsibilities for defensive reads. Prior to working at Utah, Coach Walterschied spent a season at Weber State as a defensive assistant, working with the team's stud linebackers and helping the Wildcats to a Big Sky Conference chmapionship and a final FCS ranking of No. 7. Coach Walterscheid participated in the Denver Broncos' preseason camp following his collegiate career and he also was

a member of the Arizona Rattlers of the indoor league. He has also worked in the high school ranks as an assistant at Grand Junction HS, as well as as a personal trainer. Coach Walterscheid and his wife Shawna are the parents of one son, Kingzton.

Aaron Fernandez is in his third season as a member of the Thunderbird staff. He works with the defensive line and also serves as assistant recruiting coordinator. Coach Fernandez joined the staff as an undergraduate assistant in 2009 following a stellar career as a Thunderbird player. Last year Coach Fernandez worked with a defensive line that was part of the nation’s top run defenses. SUU held opponents to just 1,279 yards on the ground in 2010, the fifth best effort at SUU in an 11-game season as well as the 21st-best mark in the nation. SUU’s overall defense also ranked 21st last year after allowing just 3,407 yards. A former Thunderbird defensive back, Dan Bennion returned to Southern Utah as the school’s strength and conditioning coach in 2003 and his efforts have been appreciated throughout the entire athletic department. A two-year letterman at safety for the Thunderbirds, Coach Bennion graduated from SUU in 2000. His first strength & conditioning position was as a graduate assistant at Northern Iowa, where he spent two years while working on his Masters of exercise science. Bennion then moved on to UNLV in January of 2002 where he was an assistant strength coach until returning to SUU in the fall of 2003. A native of Provo, Utah, Coach Bennion and his wife, Erin, are the parents of three children: Wolfgang, Browning and Sunny.

Fesi Sitake joined the Thunderbird staff as a student assistant last fall after completing an outstanding career as an SUU receiver and return specialist. As a coach, Sitake will work with the offense, primarily the receivers. A two-time all-Great West Conference selection, Sitake had two of the top-10 receiving seasons in the school’s history, catching 82 passes in 2010, SUU’s fourth-highest single-season total, and 79 in 2009, the sixth-highest. His 877 receiving yards last year are the ninth-most in a season, and his 848 in ‘09 rank 11th. In 2009 he ranked 10th in the nation in receptions per game an in 2010 he ranked sixth. Coach Sitake also excelled as a return specialist. He averaged 14.8 yards per punt return in ‘09, the seventh-best average in the country, and last year he was 25th at 10.8 yards per punt return. A native of Sandy, Utah, Coach Sitake and his wife Holly are the parents of a son, Sefesi.

At SUU, 2010: Earned first-team all-Great West Conference honors from both the coaches and the media and was the only unanimous choice by the media. Completed 261-of-390 passes for a school-record 3,163 passing yards and 21 touchdowns. His 261 completions were the second-most in school history, his 390 attempts were third most and the 21 scoring strikes are tied as the thirdmost in a season at SUU. Was named National Player of the Week by College Football Performance Awards as well as the Great West Player of the Week following the UC Davis game in which he completed 30-of-36 passes for 397 yards and five touchdowns and ran for another score. The five TD passes tied the SUU single-game record, as did the six TDs he was responsible for. He also earned honorable mention honors from CFPA following the Cal Poly, North Dakota and Dixie State games. Against Cal Poly, when he was also named GWC Player of the Week, Sorensen averaged 14 yards per completion, completing 18-of-22 passes for 253 yards and a touchdown with no interceptions. He finished the Cal Poly game with a career-best efficiency rating of 193.42. Against North Dakota he completed 35-of-46 passes for 413 yards and two TDs, while against Dixie State he completed 19-of-23 passes for 245 yards and three touchdowns before exiting the game with the team holding a 35-0 lead with 6:13 to play in the first half. Sorensen had three games in 2010 worthy of the SUU record books, and all three came on the road. At North Dakota the 35 completions tied the SUU single-game record, set by Cade Cooper vs. Eastern Washington in 2009, while the 413 yards rank third in the SUU record books. His 46 attempts at UND are tied for ninth on the list. He also notched his name into the SUU record books in five single-game categories at Texas State. His 49 pass at-

Defense: DE Tyler Osborne finished 12th in tackles for loss with 1.68 per game, while Akeem Anifowoshe was just out of the top-50, in 62nd with 1.09 per game. Osborne was also 28th in sacks per game with 0.64 per contest. Blake Fenn was just outside the top-50 in total tackles, in 58th with 8.82 per game.

Offense: On the offensive side of the ball, Tysson Poots was third in total receiving yards with 1,230, fourth in receiving yards per game with 111.82 and fourth in receptions per game with 7.73.
