CREDENTIALS Requests for press, radio, television and photo credentials should be made no later than 48 hours prior to the game. To request credentials, contact SUU assistant media relations director Kyle Newhouse at (435) 586-7758 or at kylenewhouse@suu.edu. Credentials will be mailed or left at the Will Call window at the Centrum’s west entrance. Photographers are restricted to either designated areas along both baselines and are not permitted along court side during the game. MEDIA SERVICES The Centrum press area provides working space for print and electronic media with proper credentials. Halftime and final statistics along with play-by-play will be distributed. Collect and credit card long distance calls may be made from the press area. The Centrum is also equipped with a complimentary wireless internet signal. INTERVIEW POLICIES During the week: To arrange an interview with a player and/or coach, please contact the SUU Sports Information Office at (435) 586-7758 and a time convenient for both parties will be arranged. No player interviews will be granted on game day prior to the game. Game day: SUU head coach JR Payne will be available for post-game interviews 10-15 minutes after the game, following the NCAA mandated cooling off period and his short radio session. SUU has a closed locker room policy regarding its own locker room, but players may be interviewed at their option as they leave the dressing room following the cooling off period or a member of SUU’s media relations staff can arrange post-game interviews with specific players upon request. Requests for interviews with opposing players must be arranged through that institution’s media relations office, according to that school’s interview policy. BROADCAST POLICIES Radio stations wishing to broadcast a game from the Centrum should alert the SUU media relations office well in advance of the braodcast date. Two phone lines are available for visiting stations, but space on press row is limited. Visiting stations are asked to limit broadcast teams to three persons. All line charges are the responsibility of the visiting station unless other arrangements are made. Several phone lines are available to the print media. Collect and credit card calls may be made from press row or the press room.

There is a feeling of anticipation surrounding the Southern Utah University women’s basketball program as it prepares for its first season in the Big Sky Conference. After facing a tough season full of adversity a year ago, the Thunderbirds are excited to return to the court with a group of talented players ready to prove themselves in their new conference. The team recognizes that a new challenge is in store for them this year, but look forward to the journey ahead. “The teams in the Big Sky are very well coached and play very skilled basketball. There are some very talented teams that return a lot of starters, like Idaho State and Montana State,” commented SUU head coach JR Payne. “There will also be some change with us and North Dakota coming in, having new teams is always fun for everyone.” Along with a change of conference, basketball fans will notice some differences in the style of play on the floor. “We run a motion offense, but we are going to look to play more in transition than we have in the past,” explained Payne. “This group has more depth and pieces, like shooting ability and athleticism on the perimeter. There is good balance on the inside and the outside.” The Thunderbirds will once again face a challenging non-conference schedule, highlighted by an early matchup with the University of Utah and a trip to the Basketball Travelers Invitational where they will square off against tournament host Texas Tech. “Tournaments are always fun, and Texas Tech is a neat environment with a team that draws well,” stated Payne. “The back-to-back games format is similar to the conference tournament experience which helps prepare you for that opportunity.” Southern Utah will return all five starters along with a supporting group that gained a significant amount of playing experience last year due to injuries. Leading the group will be the most veteran member of the squad, senior forward Tayler Anderson. “Tayler is the only four-year player on this team, she has been a joy to have here and is a great example. She is our hardest worker everyday, she doesn’t know how to do anything other than go as hard as you can and then keep going,” commented Payne. “She is the ultimate utility player, she does whatever the team needs. She will play everything from the one through four positions for us at times this year.” The Thunderbird roster will feature only one other senior this season, returning forward Kimie Hawkins. After transferring to Southern Utah last season, Hawkins quickly developed into one of the team’s best post players, ranking among the leaders in scoring and rebounding. “When Kimie came here we expected her to do well. It is really neat to see how much she has grown and matured from last spring until now, she has worked really hard and understand this team’s expectations,” said Payne. “She has added mental toughness to her game and I expect her to have a really great year.”

Also in the frontcourt for Southern Utah will be the team’s leading rebounder from last season, Carli Moreland. The junior forward is coming off an impressive sophomore year that saw her receive honorable mention honors for the all-Summit League team. “Last season Carli was thrown into the fire after playing behind Challis (Pascucci) in her first year. We expected her to play significant minutes, which gives her a lot of game experience going into her junior year,” explained Payne. “She has been working on the mental aspects of the game and is really becoming a complete player.” SUU fans will look forward to the return of Desiree Jackson who is back for T-Birds after missing last season with an injury. The sophomore guard showed a tremendous amount of potential and skill during her freshman campaign, averaging nearly 10 points a game. “It was hard for Desiree to be sidelined but she took the approach that she needed to learn. She grew a lot in her understanding of the game and gets better everyday,” stated Payne. “She is a natural talent, the game comes easy to her. She has worked on her perimeter shooting and added the 3-point shot to her game.” Paired up with Jackson in the backcourt will be Southern Utah’s leading scorer from last season, Hailey Mandelko. The sophomore guard is coming off a sensational freshman campaign that landed her a spot on the Summit League All-Newcomer Team. “The game comes very naturally to Hailey, she can score in a variety of ways, she sees the floor very well and she comes from an athletic background,” commented Payne. “She is doing really well coming back and is shooting as well as before.” Andrea Jones is back for her junior season, and will help bolster the SUU backcourt. After missing time early in the season due to injury, Jones came back last year to establish herself as one of the Thunderbirds’ top scorers, averaging over 10 points a game. “We need Dre to be more selfish,” explains Payne. “She is a great scorer and has scored the ball very well here. She is athletic and strong and has the ability to make significant contributions on both offense and defense.” The T-Birds will also benefit from the return of key reserves Taylor Maynes and Brenna Gates who are both back this fall. “Taylor is a great hustle player and earned playing time by sheer effort. She does anything we ask of her and always works hard,” stated Payne. “Brenna is one of the more talented players on our roster and she has a unique combination of size and athleticism.” Also back for Southern Utah is Marquelle Funk. The sophomore guard showed great potential a year ago before being sidelined by an injury early in the season.

“Last year was disappointing for Marquelle after she got off to such a great start. She didn’t look like a freshman, she played without fear and played her guts out,” commented Payne. “She fits this team perfectly with her long arms and big hands. She blocks shots, rebounds, runs well and has really worked on her perimeter game.” Southern Utah will be without the services of DJ Norman this year, who will redshirt to recover from a recent injury. The Thunderbirds are also excited about a strong 2012-13 recruiting class that includes Basia Klein of San Clemente, California and international standout Ashleigh Munns from England. “Basia is really long and versatile. She is a scrappy hustle player who also shoots the ball well,” said Payne. “Ashleigh is as good a shooter as we have ever had. She also has experience playing in big games from the time she spent on her national team. Whenever you have the opportunity to play with your country’s name on your jersey, that is really something special.” There is also a lot of anticipation surrounding in-state recruit Lori Parkinson. The freshman forward from West Valley is regarded as one of the best high school players to come out of the state of Utah as seen in her selection to the 2012 Salt Lake Tribune 4A First Team and being named the 4A Defensive Player of the Year by the Deseret News. “Lori is a tenacious player with an incredible world of upside. She is naturally gifted, she jumps and runs well and has big hands that help her rebound,” explained Payne. “She learns like a sponge and is a great teammate. I expect her to be a staple in the post for years here.” SUU has also brought in three junior college transfer players who will add depth to the roster. Coincidentally, all three were teammates at Salt Lake Community College for the past two seasons. Joining the T-Birds this fall will be Sofia Hepworth from St. Anthony, Idaho, Nicole Newbold of South Jordan, Utah and Marissa Robbins from Lake Point, Utah. “Sofia is a two-guard who can score the ball well and has a good pull-up jumper. Nicole gives us some depth in the post and shoots better than any other of our post players,” commented Payne. “Marissa fits our style of play perfectly. She runs well, she is long, she jumps well, she is a really good athlete.” All together Southern Utah will feature one of its most talented lineups in recent history. The T-Birds have looked forward to and prepared for their debut in the Big Sky Conference for a long time and have high expectations for their first season in the league. “I am more excited about this team than I have ever been,” stated Payne. “This a hard-working group with great spirit that has been able to put in the work and enjoy it. They have bonded well and I think they are ready to have a great journey together this year.”

J R P ay n e Head Coach Fourth Season St. Mary’s, 1999

JR Payne is set to lead the Thunderbirds into the Big Sky Conference as she begins her fourth season at Southern Utah. After taking over the program on April 20, 2009, Payne led the T-Birds to back-to-back Summit League Tournaments in 2010 and 2011. Under Payne’s direction the 2011-12 season saw the emergence of a talented young group of players led by standouts Hailey Mandelko and Carli Moreland. Mandelko started at the point as a true freshman and finished the season as the T-Birds leading scorer (13.1 PPG) to earn all-newcomer honors in the conference. Moreland recieved honorable mention honors after ranking fifth in the league in rebounding (7.9 RPG) and eleventh in scoring (12.3 PPG). SUU also placed six student-athletes on the Summit League Academic All-League teams. Payne’s tenure at Southern Utah has been highlighted by the 2010-11 season when the team posted a record of 16-14, its best mark in the past seven years. The 2011 squad also had one of their best seasons as a member of the Summit League, posting a 10-8 record to finish fifth in the conference. Under Payne’s guidance, forward Challis Pascucci produced one of best individual performances in SUU history, earning a spot on the All-Summit League first team after finishing third in the conference in scoring (17.7 PPG), second in rebounding (9.7 RPG) and sixth in blocks (23). Pascucci finished the 2011 season as the Thunderbirds all-time leader in career rebounds (929) and fourth in scoring (1,328). Prior to coming to SUU, Payne served as the top assistant at Santa Clara University under first-year head coach Jennifer Mountain for the 2008-09 season. Payne also served as an assistant coach at Boise State University and Gonzaga University. During her time in Boise, the Broncos enjoyed a wealth of success, winning conference titles two of the three years and advancing to the NCAA postseason. BSU posted back-to-back 24-8 seasons, including a perfect 14-0 mark at home during the 2007-08 season. Payne began her career at Gonzaga University, serving as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator under head coach Kelly Graves. Payne was an integral part of the Bulldogs turnaround as the team posted a five-win season during the staff’s first year then went to a 28-win season during the 2004-05 season, including an undefeated run in the West Coast Conference. Payne was a part of the process that brought Gonzaga’s first All-American to campus in guard Shannon Mathews. As a player, Payne was a four-year letter winner at St. Mary’s College (Calif.), helping the Gaels earn their first trip to the NCAA Tournament in school-history during the 1998-99 season. The former point guard was an All-West Coast Conference first team selection and was also named to the West Coast Conference All-Tournament first team twice.

Toriano Towns Associate Head Coach Fourth Season St. Maryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s, 1998

Toriano Towns enters his fourth season as associate head coach for the Thunderbirds. Towns serves as SUU’s recruiting and defensive coordinator, assists with the planning of practice sessions, conditioning, scouting, and also works with the Thunderbird post players. During his first three seasons with the Thunderbirds, Towns helped forward Challis Pascucci develop into one of the premiere low post players in the Summit League. After the 2009-10 season Pascucci earned All-Summit League second team honors after leading the conference in rebounding and tied for the lead in blocked shots. She also set the SUU single-season record for total rebounds with 291 and her 46 blocks were the fifth most in SUU single-season history. Pascucci earned a spot on the All-Summit League first team after finishing third in the conference in scoring (17.7 PPG), second in rebounding (9.7 RPG) and sixth in blocks (23). Pascucci finished the 2011 season as the Thunderbirds all-time leader in career rebounds (929) and fourth in scoring (1,328). Towns joined Southern Utah after spending four years at Boise State University as the Broncos defensive coordinator. During his time at BSU, the Broncos won back-to-back Western Athletic Conference championships, earned a trip to the NCAA tournament, advanced to the second round of the WNIT tournament, had a pair of First Team All-WAC guards and set numerous offensive and defensive school records. Prior to Boise State, Towns spent one season as an assistant coach at the University of Arizona, helping the Wildcats record a 20-win season and a post a first round NCAA Tournament victory against the University of Oklahoma. Towns played a major role in recruiting and scouting at Arizona. He worked with the Wildcat post players, assisting with the development of Shawntinice Polk who became one of the country’s most decorated post players being named to the Kodak/WBCA AllAmerican team, first-team All-Pac-10 team, and Kodak/WBCA all-Region 8 team. Towns’ coaching career began at Gonzaga University where he served as an assistant for three seasons. At Gonzaga, Towns was responsible for post player development, where he coached five All-West Coast Conference performers along with holding responsibility for scouting and game preparation. He also served as the co-recruiting coordinator for the Bulldogs. During his time at Gonzaga, he helped orchestrate the second-best turnaround in WCC history as the Bulldogs went from eighth in 2002-03 to second place in 2003-04, posting an 18-12 overall record. That team advanced to its second-ever Women’s National Invitational Tournament (WNIT). Towns earned his bachelor’s degree in communications from Saint Mary’s College in 1998 and his Master’s Degree in Organizational Leadership from Gonzaga University. “Toriano has been a great addition to Southern Utah women’s basketball,” head coach JR Payne said. “He’s a proven recruiter on a national scale and will continue to elevate our recruiting to a new level. Toriano is a fierce competitor on the court and is extremely passionate about the growth and development of our student-athletes, not only as players but also as people. He is great resource that will continue to contribute in the building SUU women’s basketball.”

Caitlyn Sears enters her second season as a member of the Thunderbird coaching staff following one of the most productive playing careers in the history of SUU basketball. Sears finished her playing days as Southern Utah’s fifth all-time leading scorer with 1,216 total points. She also ranks third in games played (115) and ninth in steals (126). Sears was also named to the all-Summit League second team after averaging 15.3 points per game and shooting 44 percent from behind the arc during her senior season. Sears spent her summers at SUU working at camps and clinics alongside Coach Payne and looks forward to beginning her coaching career with her mentor. “I have a tremendous amount of respect for this coaching staff and consider it a great opportunity to work with Coach Payne,” said Sears of her transition from player to coach at SUU. “She knows the game and loves what she does. She is also a great teacher and does all she can to help you learn.” There is a great deal of mutual respect between Sears and her former coach and new colleague. Coach Payne expects that the positive traits that Sears displayed as a player will help her to succeed in her new role with the team. “Cait is going to be a tremendous asset to our coaching staff. As a player, she was always our leader both on and off the floor,” said Payne of her former player. “Cait’s work ethic and passion for the game is undeniable and has always earned her the respect of her peers as well as everyone around her. I expect that Cait’s leadership will continue to impact our team in a way that motivates our players to strive for greatness.” The former forward was a four-year letter winner at Lone Peak High School and was named first-team all-state by the Salt Lake Tribune and Deseret News as well as a McDonald’s AllAmerican nominee in 2007. She received a degree in physical educations from SUU in the fall of 2011. Sears is the daughter of Brad and Judi Sears of Cedar Hills, Utah.

Jill Mahoney Assistant Coach 1st Season GCU, 2009

Jill Mahoney enters her first season as an assistant coach for the Thunderbirds. She comes to SUU from Western State College of Colorado where she helped the Mountaineers to a top four finish in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. “We couldn’t be more excited about having Jill join our coaching staff at Southern Utah,” said Thunderbird head coach JR Payne. “She has had a tremendous amount of success both as a player as well as a coach and will bring an enthusiasm and energy that is truly contagious.” Prior to her time in Gunnison she spent four years as an assistant at Grand Canyon University in Phoenix, Ariz. During that time the Antelopes captured three Pacific West Conference Championships and advanced to the NCAA Divison II National tournament in 2010 as well as the Sweet Sixteen in 2011. As a coach Mahoney has overseen various responsibilities including implementing offensive systems, coordinating strength and conditioning programs and managing administrative duties such as travel, equipment, academics and budget. “Not only will Jill be a great fit within our program but I believe she is someone who will really connect with the Cedar City community,” said Payne. “All around, we are absolutely thrilled that Jill will be joining us here at SUU.” During her playing career Mahoney earned recognition as the Newcomer of the Year and a first-team all-conference selection at Bethany College in Lindsborg, Kan. She played her final season at Grand Canyon where she helped the team to an undefeated PacWest season and received all-conference honors. The former guard/forward was a three-time all-State high school selection in Russell, Kan. She received her Master’s degree in Educational Administration from GCU in 2009.

A new era in the Big Sky Conference begins in 2012-13 as the league enters its 50th year of athletic competition, and its 25th sponsoring women’s collegiate athletics. The Division I Big Sky Conference welcomes the University of North Dakota and Southern Utah University into the fold as full members. Cal Poly and UC Davis join the league as affiliate members in football, where the league competes at the Championship Subdivision level (formerly I-AA). The additions of North Dakota and Southern Utah give the stable Big Sky 11 full institutions and 13 football members. The current lineup includes four of the six charter members: Idaho State University, The University of Montana, Montana State University and Weber State. Northern Arizona enters its 43rd season in the Big Sky, giving the conference five members with at least 40 years of continuous membership. Eastern Washington University joined the Big Sky Conference in 1987, followed by Portland State University and Sacramento State in 1996. The Big Sky became a nine-team league in 2006 with the addition of the University of Northern Colorado. The league has become one of the strongest Division I conferences in the West and is a national leader in the Football Championship Subdivision. Six times, Big Sky teams have won the Division I National Championship, including Eastern Washington in 2010. Northern Arizona. Gonzaga left the Sky in 1979 and was replaced by Nevada, which gave the league eight members. The conference grew to nine schools in 1987 with the addition of Eastern Washington. The 1990s saw change in the makeup of the league, beginning in 1992 when Nevada departed and put the Big Sky back at eight teams. In 1996 Boise State and Idaho left and at the same time the conference added Portland State, Sacramento State and Cal State Northridge. The Big Sky maintained nine teams for five years before Cal State Northridge departed in the spring of 2001. The Big Sky now includes nine states spanning from the Pacific Ocean to the Red River Valley of North Dakota. The league is represented along the entire west coast with institutions in Washington, Oregon and California. League schools also range up and down the Rocky Mountains with institutions in Montana, Idaho, Utah, Arizona and Colorado. On Feb 25, 1963, the name Big Sky was adopted by the six presidents of the charter members as the name of the new conference. The name Big Sky originated in a novel written by the late A.B. (Bud) Guthrie of Great Falls, Mont., in 1947 entitled “The Big Sky.” Jack Hollowell, a former Montana advertising director, promoted the Big Sky theme for the Treasure State. While on a track and field trip from Pocatello, Idaho, to Missoula, Mont., legendary Dubby Holt of Idaho State saw a “Welcome to Big Sky Country” sign as his team entered Montana. Holt, and his athletes thought “Big Sky” would be a perfect name for the new conference. Harry Missildine of the Spokane Spokesman-Review called for the newly formed league to be named the Big Sky Conference in his column dated Feb. 20, 1963. The Big Sky sponsors championships in 15 sports, including men’s and women’s cross country, indoor and outdoor track and field, basketball and tennis. In addition, there are also championships in football, and women’s volleyball, golf and soccer. This upcoming spring, the Big Sky will sponsor a softball championship for the first time. In 1988-89, the Big Sky Conference first began sponsoring women’s sports. The former Mountain West Conference existed from 1982-88, sponsoring championships for women’s sports at the same institutions the Big Sky had men’s programs. The Big Sky merged with the Mountain West in 1988, forming one league for both men and women. Doug Fullerton, the fifth commissioner of the Big Sky Conference, is in his 18th year at the helm. Fullerton took over the Big Sky on July 1, 1995, replacing longtime commissioner Ron Stephenson, who passed away in 2011. Stephenson served the league for 14 years. Steve Belko was the commissioner from 1977-81, while John Roning held the post from 197177. The first league commissioner was Jack Friel, who served from 1963-71.

Michael T. Benson was appointed the 15th president of Southern Utah University on November 10, 2006, by the Utah State Board of Regents. Dr. Benson came to SUU from Snow College where he served as president for five years. Prior to his tenure in Ephraim, Dr. Benson was special assistant to the president and secretary to the University of Utah, a cabinet-level position on that campus. During his presidency at Snow, athletic teams excelled, winning several conference championships and finishing near the top of national rankings. He was instrumental in establishing America’s premier junior college football bowl game, the Zions Bank Top of the Mountains Bowl, played each December in Salt Lake City. Dr. Benson currently serves as Chair of the Presidents’ Council for the Summit League. President Benson is the father of four children, Emma, Samuel, Truman Taft, and Tatum Anne. He and his wife Debi, along with the kids, are regularly seen around campus and at all types of sporting events. An accomplished athlete, Dr. Benson was captain of the East High School basketball team and one of four sophomores on the team that won the 1981 Utah State championship. He turned down track scholarships as a senior at East to enroll at Brigham Young University on a leadership scholarship, eventually earning a bachelor’s degree in political science, English, and history while playing on the junior varsity basketball team. He has also competed in the worlds oldest rivalry, serving as a player/coach in leading Oxford University over Cambridge in the 1994 Varsity Basketball Match. President Benson has completed several marathons with his best time (2:41) winning his age division at the St. George Marathon. In 1984, Michael was one of only 19 teenagers to compete in the Boston Marathon, with his finishing time of 2:52 placing him in the top 15% of all registered runners. While President of Snow College, he ran the St. George Marathon again, this time raising over $50,000 for the athletic department. He currently maintains a seven handicap in his favorite sport, golf. Dr. Benson holds a doctorate in modern Middle Eastern History from Oxford University. His critically-acclaimed book, Harry S. Truman and the Founding of Israel has led to many lecturing and consulting opportunities. Michael regularly leads tour groups to the Middle East where he is eager to share his love for and knowledge of the region. He is currently pursuing a master’s degree in non-profit administration at the Mendoza School of Business at the University of Notre Dame. The Bensons are delighted to be at Southern Utah University and look forward to supporting Thunderbird student-athletes for many years to come.

Excellence in athletics will continue to be an investment we are willing to make at Southern Utah University. In addition to those student-athletes who learn invaluable lessons in both the “thrill of victory and the agony of defeat,” athletics provide excellent participation opportunities for students in bands, cheer squads, dance teams, trainers, marketing interns, and many more. SUU ATHLETIC SUCCESS Southern Utah University has an outstanding athletic tradition. The majority of SUU’s sports are affiliated with the Summit League, with the exception of gymnastics (which competes in the Western Athletic Conference) and football, a charter member of the Great West Football Conference.

SUU’s teams regularly compete for conference championships. This past year SUU women captured the Summit League cross country title while the gymnastics team took home the Western Athletic Conference trophy. Several teams on campus advanced to the conference tournament in their respective sports with a collection of individual athletes garnering all-tournament and all-conference honors. The SUU gymnastics team has been represented in NCAA post-season competition every year since 1991. This past season, Southern Utah was represented at the NCAA National Championships in gymnastics as well as indoor and outdoor track & field.

Ken Beazer was named Southern Utah’s Athletic Director on Dec. 21, 2005 and took the reins of the program Jan. 2, 2006. Beazer came to Southern Utah from Utah State University, where he has served as director of athletic development for the past four-plus years. While at USU, Beazer developed and initiated the largest capital campaign in the history of the school’s athletic department, including fund-raising for a planned $25 million renovation of Romney Stadium. Prior to his time at Utah State, Beazer spent nine years at Snow College, the first three as defensive coordinator on the football coaching staff and the final six – from 1995 to 2001 – as the school’s director of athletics. As a coach his teams ranked among the NJCAA’s top five defenses two of his three seasons, while as AD at Snow he implemented the college’s first Athletic Foundation Board as well as an annual giving program. He also spent two seasons as a graduate assistant football coach at Washington State University.

Beazer is a 1989 graduate of Weber State University with a degree in broadcast communication. He also holds a master of arts degree in communication from Washington State, as well as an associate of arts in the same field from Snow College. Beazer and his wife, Cidnee, are the parents of four children: Rhett, Adrienne, Jadon and Harrison. KEN BEAZER ON SUU ATHLETICS: Southern Utah University is truly a place where academics come first. The strong academic commitment of the staff and coaches is manifest in the overall academic accomplishments our teams achieve on an annual basis. The University’s strong academic emphasis, coupled with the dedicated efforts of the student athletes, allows the Athletics Department to continually post high marks in the classroom. Thunderbird Athletics was recently rewarded by its fellow institutions with an unprecedented, fourth consecutive Mid-Continent Conference Sportsmanship Award, setting a new standard by which all institutions are now measured. Southern Utah’s training facilities include an expanded training room in Eccles Coliseum as well as three fully-equipped medical and training facilities located elsewhere on campus. SUU’s training facilities also include an olympic-sized pool. With a fully-certified staff as well as a student training program SUU is prepared to handle all the training needs of its 17 sports’ student athletes. Six doctors serve SUU student-athletes’ needs, including orthopedic specialist Dr. Robert Nakken, podiatrist Dr. Russ Olsen, pain specialist Dr. Dale Stott, general practitioner Dr. C. J. Thinnes and dentists Dr. James Sorenson and Dr. Brian Tavoian.

The Student-Athlete Academic Center was recently renovated in 2010 with a brand new lounge area, providing studentathletes a place to relax and a comfortable area to study. The Center features both individual and group work spaces and is centrally located on campus in the multi-purpose building. Marlene Barth, the Athletic Academic Coordinator, is also located in the center and is available to answer questions and help student-athletes achieve their academic goals.

Athletics is an important part of your life right now. But what will you do when your playing days are over? Southern Utah University can help you prepare for a successful career in a variety of fields. SUU offers four master’s programs and over 120 bachelor’s programs in its six schools and colleges, as well as a range of certificates, associate’s and pre-professional degrees a wide variety of disciplines. School of Applied Science and Technology The SUU School of Applied Science and Technology offers 20 major courses of study as well as minors and pre-professional degrees in 26 additional areas. The Southern Utah Crime Laboratory is housed here and the State Criminologist teaches in the Criminal Justice Program. SUU’s technology education degree is the only program in the western United States with a career technical emphasis. School of Business In addition to master’s degrees in accountancy and business administration, the SUU School of Business offers bachelor’s degrees in nine majors with an additional 11 areas of specialization. SUU’s undergraduates consistently score in or above the 80th percentile on the ETS national field exam, including outstanding marks in the 90th and 96th percentile in finance and economics, respectively. SUU also offers a Military Science program through Army ROTC College of Education The SUU College of Education offers a master’s degree as well as four primary majors with 15 areas of specialization. The SUU physical education department – known as “The Coaching Factory” because of the success of its graduates – is housed in the newest and most modern facility in Utah. One of the finest facilities of its type in the west, the Sorenson Physical Education Building houses an Olympic-sized swimming pool, three basketball courts, five racquetball courts, state-of-the-art kinesiology and exercise laboratories as well as technologyequipped classrooms. College of Humanities and Social Sciences SUU’s College of Humanities and Social Sciences offers 20 major areas of study. Graduates of the College can boast an acceptance rate above 90 percent in acceptance to accredited law schools over the past dozen years. SUU’s campus newspaper, The University Journal, has won more awards over the past 12 years than any university newspaper in 14 western states and the departments of english and foreign language have an award-winning faculty, including Utah’s Poet Laureate of Utah, department head David Lee. College of Performing and Visual Arts SUU’s College of Performing and Visual Arts offers an MFA in arts administration as well as bachelor’s degrees in 15 areas of specialization. Professional affiliations include the Tony Award-winning Utah Shakespearean Festival, the American Folk Ballet and the Braithwaite Fine Arts Gallery. The MFA program is the only one of its kind in the western USA. College of Science Home to 27 major areas of study, the SUU College of Science has seen 88 percent of its graduates who applied to professional pharmacy schools and 72 percent of its graduates applying to medical schools accepted. The national acceptance rate for pharmacy schools is 25 percent while the national rate for medical schools is 38 percent. University College Home The University College provides services and resources for students who have yet to declare a major including academic advising, career advising, aptitude testing and courses in personal development. Also provides career preparation services through the Community Engagement Center, Harry Reid Center for Outdoor Engagement and Sargon Heinrich Global Engagement Center. “Student-Athletes are held to a high standard of academic achievement which includes NCAA eligibility requirements. Southern Utah University is a comprehensive institution offering programs for students with many interests and goals. The University provides undergraduate liberal education in the arts, humanities and sciences; authorized professional work in teacher education, business and technology; and specialized training in vocational teacher education. SUU has been accorded a host of outstanding academic honors in recent years. Consumer Reports named the University among its Top Ten in its list of quality and value in colleges and universities in America for the second time in three years this past summer. The Princeton Review tabbed SUU as a Best Value Institution last spring, while U.S. News and World Report listed the University as one of America’s Best Colleges in 2007. The Princeton Review has also named SUU as one of its “Best In The West,” and Southern Utah’s website was named a top-10 site by the National Research Center for College and University Admissions. SUU students select their courses from departments and programs in the School of Business; College of Computing, Integrated Engineering and Technology; School of Continuing and Professional Studies; Beverley Taylor Sorenson College of Education and Human Development; College of Humanities and Social Sciences; Library; College of Performing and Visual Arts; College of Science; and College of Graduate Studies. More than 600 faculty and staff members serve SUU’s 7,516 undergraduate and graduate students. Academic programs in business, teacher education, industrial education and theatre arts have received wide acclaim for their excellence. Affiliated with the university are a number of cultural arts and performing groups which support the mission of SUU. SUU is also home to the Utah Shakespearean Festival with its Adams Memorial Theatre, based upon the original Globe Theatre; and the Randall Jones Theatre, one of the finest indoor theatres in the West. Southern Utah facilities are also used extensively during the month in June as home for the Utah Summer Games. Campus facilities range from the ivy-covered Old Main and Braithwaite Liberal Arts Center, built in 1898 and 1899; to the Dixie Leavitt Business Building; to the Sharwan Smith Center, a multi-purpose facility which houses the Centrum Arena – SUU’s basketball and gymnastics venue – as well as classrooms, the university’s student union, bookstore and various offices.

The university opened a state-of-the-art library in 1996, while the Eccles Coliseum, the Universityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s football and track stadium, has undergone a complete renovation in the recent past, including new grandstands, office areas, a new press box and a new track. Another exciting development was the physical education complex, which serves the entire student-body with state-of-the art athletic and recreational facilities. The newest additions on campus include the Emma Eccles Jones Teacher Education Building and the Carter Carillon Tower. The university also owns and operates a 1,000-acre farm in western Cedar Valley and a 3,700-acre ranch in Cedar Canyon. Because of their proximity and grandeur and formal educational alliance with Southern Utah University, Zion National Park and Cedar Breaks National Monument are claimed by SUU students as part of their campus. Geology, life science and a variety of academic fields plan trips to take advantage of these national treasures in addition to Bryce Canyon, Grand Canyon, Capitol Reef and Great Basin National Parks, which are also close by. The Universityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s skiing classroom is at 11,300-foot Brian Head Ski Resort, less than an hour away, while the recreational opportunities offered by Lake Powell are less than two hours away. SUU has a history unique in the annals of American higher education. In 1897, the entire population of Cedar City, then a small pioneer town, engaged in the building of Old Main, the first building of the University. Beginning the project in mid-winter because of a harsh deadline imposed the legislature, the men and women of the community donated materials, money and labor to complete the building on time. Today the university campus has grown to comprise 133 acres, landscaped with fountains, tall spruce and pine trees, plazas, statuary, latticed walkways and expansive lawns.
