PROJECT OVERVIEW GROWTH TRENDS IN LAHORE- THE SPRAWLING METROPOLITIAN AREA
PAKISTAN RAILWAYS
There is no denying the benefits of MASS TRANSIT over private automobiles in reducing traffic congestions, fossil fuel consumptions and pollution. In addition, mass transit serves people from DIVERSE SOCIO-ECONOMIC CLASSES in successful transit metropolis. Presently, INFRASTRUCTURAL PROJECTS in Lahore are mainly focused at facilitating the private automobile - widening of roads, making of flyovers. However, we must not overlook the opportunity of UTILIZING the EXISTING INFRASTRUCTURE of the RAILWAYS for MOBILIZING the COMMUNITY.
SCOPE OF WORK 1- Design of the Railway Station as a Multi Modal Station 2- Develop a Master Plan for a 1/4 mile strip of the Station
UPGRADATION OF THE RAILWAY STATION AT KOT LAKPAT
TRANSPORT INFRASTRUCTURE should be utilized to Structure the city. It should be designed to co-exist in its CONTEXT ,yet be a defining monument for the public such as a NEW GATEWAY in this case, that gives Kot lakpat a new identity. Currently, Lahore has ONE main railway station in the vicinity of the Central business district. This region of Lahore is densely populated and a generator of traffic from around Lahore on its own for its significance as the CBD. The Lahore Railway Station in the area, handles the main load of the city, thus serving as an additional crowd generator, adding to the CONGESTION in the area An UP GRADATION of the Railway Station at Kot Lakpat is soon expected by Pakistan Railways in order to cater to the increasing demands of mobility & expanding LMA. This is an opportunity to utilize railway infrastructure to structure growth, distributing the load between the North and South and mobilizing the community.
An attempt has been made to propose a CONTEXT SENSITIVE DESIGN for the station at Kot Lakpat that would serve as a NEW GATEWAY to the city and an URBAN MAGANET to spur new developments in the area.
PROJECT OBJECTIVES
OBJECTIVES
1- To design the station as a multi modal hub 2- To improve access & minimize circulation conflicts 3- To facilitate interchange 4- To serve as a defining gateway to the city 5- To reflect the architectural character of the area 6- To provide commercial facilities at a manageable scale to the station.

CONCLUSIONS
1- STATION STREETS are designed to allow EFFICIENT CIRCULATION of huge crowds
2- COMMERCIAL ACTIVITIES are provided at a manageable scale

CONCLUSIONS
3- COMPLIMENTING TRANSPORT FACILITIES such as taxis, rickshaw stands make the station a MULTIMODAL FACILITY. 4- PRIVATE CAR PARKS are also located, hence a BLEND IN OF LOCAL & PRIVATE TRANSPORT FACILITIES.

RAILWAY STATION PLAN CIRCULATION SPACES
CONCLUSIONS
Internal facilities are segregated via levels to PREVENT CIRCULATION CONFLICTS. GROUND FLOOR is reserved mainly for TRAIN PASSENGERS , while UPPER LEVELS provide more COMMERCIAL FACILTIES.
CIRCULATION SPACES are located for easy access & visibility. They are designed for UNIVERSAL ACCESS & allow MINIMUM EGRESS TIME.

PEDESTRIAN BRIDGE
PEDESTRIAN BRIDGE/ UPPER LEVELS ARE UNIVERSALY ACCESSIBLE
The lower pillars are made of concrete as they are subject to greater structural load. 1- ENHANCING ENTRANCES & CONNECTING BRIDGES via DOUBLE HEIGHT structures.
2- Structure designed to utilize STACK EFFECT & provide NATURAL VENTILATION in the CONTEXT OF LAHORE to be less energy intensive, hence SUSTAINABLE. 3- Use of SPACE FRAME structure allows large spans. This also reduces echoes & nose pollution at the station. Space frame ceilings also provide space for utility ducts.
