News from La Trobe • A written statement where the student indicates the activities they have been involved in, and the impact these activities have had on their community Aspire – Early Admissions Program La Trobe University is introducing a new Early Admissions Program – Aspire. This program is aimed at recognising students who are or actively involved in the positive impact of community service and non-academic school commitments, such as leadership, sport or cultural activities. Applicants for this program will be assessed on these criteria and not just ATAR scores. The assessment criteria include: • A recommendation by the Principal (or their nominee)

A key feature of Aspire is the enrichment program that accompanies a student's offer. The enrichment program will run from September through to March and will support these new students through the final stages of VCE and prepare them for university life. The enrichment program will provide high quality and high impact opportunities including: • A voucher to VCE revision lectures to be held in the September school holidays. • Mentoring from a La Trobe University student ambassador. • La Trobe University library card and details about our library services. • 'Passport to the world' a booklet detailing La Trobe’s study abroad program.

Western Chances Scholarship - Applications Now Open! have an identifiable talent or pathway and be eager to succeed. One size doesn’t fit all at Western Chances and scholarships are shaped to fit the needs of the young person. The scholarships average $1,000 which may be used to purchase text books, leadership and study camps, laptops, internet access, tutoring, lecture notes, music or dance lessons, public transport expenses and specialist equipment. http://westernchances.org.au/ Several of our students are current recipients of this fantastic scholarship and new applications are now being welcomed by Western Chances. News from Monash University
New Diploma of Higher Education (DHES) The Diploma of Higher Education Studies (DHES) is a one-year pathway program to a degree in one of following areas: Arts and Social Sciences, Business and Economics, Information Technology or Science. This course provides intensive learning opportunities in problem-solving, analytical, and research skills that will prepare students for the rigours of tertiary level academic study. In addition, students gain credit towards their undergraduate degrees by successfully completing (subject to individual Faculty specifications) six first year subjects in their chosen streams and two additional core units. Local students with a minimum ATAR of 65 are eligible to apply. This is unique undergraduate course has a strong focus on leadership for social change towards the global challenges facing cultures and communities throughout the world. This degree will include: core units focusing on leadership development; a broad range of multidisciplinary electives; an overseas study component; a choice of three specialisations, International studies, International relations, and Global cultural literacies, and the option of a double degree with Commerce or
Science. Students should note that the Bachelor of Global Studies replaces the following courses in 2015: Bachelor of Arts (Global); Bachelor of Arts (International); Bachelor of Arts (Languages). Students keen on finding out more about this degree are invited to attend an Information Session in August. Date: Wednesday 13 August 2014 Time: 6.30pm – 7.30pm Venue: Building H Room 116, Monash University Caulfield Campus New course in 2015 - two-year Bachelor of International Business The Faculty of Business and Economics is about to launch an exciting new business degree, the Bachelor of International Business, designed to help students’ fast-track their global career. Commencing in February 2015, this specialist degree is suited to highly-motived Year 12 students who are interested in experiencing the fast-paced environment of global business. The course will be delivered in a trimester model – over three semesters per year at the city campus. A limited number of places will be offered for the first intake of this specialist degree. The indicative ATAR is set at 80; however this may increase with demand. The prerequisites are a study score of at least 30 in English (ESL) or 25 in any other English, and a study score of at least 25 in Mathematics (any).

Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences Update • Physiotherapy – as previously stated, the UMAT and ISAT are not required for 2015 entry. An interview is still required and will be offered based on applicant’s academic record. • Radiography and Medical Imaging – an interview has been introduced as an extra requirement for entry to this degree. Applicants will be invited to attend an interview based on their academic performance. The interview will involve 4 MMI (Multiple Mini Interview) stations. NOTE: find out more about radiation oncology careers: www.acareerinradiationoncology.com.au. • Bachelor of Nursing (Community Health) – Berwick campus won’t have an intake for this degree, but will have the Bachelor of Nursing from 2015 (VTAC - listed with Clayton and Peninsula). • Direct Entry MBBS – Monash is the only Victorian university offering Year 12 students who aspire to become a doctor the option of applying directly to the B. Medicine and B. Surgery program from school. There are 242 places for domestic students and 65 for internationals. Discontinued courses for 2015: • The B. Nursing and B. Emergency Health (Peninsula campus). Students can alternatively study a B. Nursing followed by a Master of Emergency Health OR a B. Emergency Health (Paramedic) followed by a Master of Nursing Practice. • The B. Health Science and B. Business (Caulfield campus).
News from Deakin University BACHELOR OF DESIGN TECHNOLOGY – There is a trend to increasingly adaptive industries, where manufacturing and product development companies are becoming smaller and adopting more diverse interests and product lines. The industry needs versatile, technologically-minded people with design, project management and organisational skills to drive innovation. Commencing in 2015, Deakin’s B. Design Technology has design and innovation as core focus. Gain design skills for application in technological settings, and an understanding of using technology to enhance design and product development. Graduates will be able to create and design consumer, sports, medical or
industrial products. Where: Waurn Ponds; Prerequisite: English BACHELOR OF PLANNING (HONOURS) – As cities grow, there is increasing demand for planners to manage change. This new Deakin degree brings together disciplines of planning, design, urban studies and society in one degree. Where: Geelong (Waterfront); 4 years; Prerequisite: English.

SPOTLIGHT ON: Political Scientist To become a Political Scientist you generally have to study Arts or Social Science at University with a major in Politics, Political Science, International Studies or International Relations. Most universities in Australia offer degrees in these areas. Universities have different prerequisites and some have flexible entry requirements or offer external study. Graduates may also undertake their Masters in areas such as Public Policy and Human Rights
Political scientists study the theory, origin, development, interrelationships and functioning of political institutions and movements. They also study individual, group and mass political behavior and the relationship between politics, society and the economy. Political scientists may perform the following tasks: • research fields such as political philosophy, the theory and practice of political systems and institutions, public administration, political party systems, the development of public opinion, international relations and relations between government and business • assemble research data by consulting and studying the works of others and observing the workings of contemporary political institutions and practices • present findings and conclusions in a form suitable for publication or use by government, political parties, international institutions and nongovernment organisations • plan and direct public opinion surveys and interpret results • write articles for publication in sources such as newspapers and journals to inform the public • present political information on radio and television. Personal Requirements: • aptitude for research and analysis • good oral and written communication skills • interested in current affairs and politics.

They are also employed by the media as journalists, political analysts and commentators. In the Foreign Service and other institutions concerned with the issues of aid, development, the environment, human rights and education, political scientists analyse the political implications of proposed strategies at both the domestic and international level.
