PROJECT 02: Forum
Forum 1 Summary ABSTRACT : Graduate interior designers oen choose to execute their experse in the field through unaided freelance means avoiding the long professional registraon processes. By treading into the profession with lile to no legal backing or support from representaonal organizaons one is bound to encounter unprecedented liabilies. This is where the disadvantages of being unregistered outweighs the freedom of freelance working. Liabilities are numerous, especially in fields that include a three party (client, designer, contractor) involvement where things are bound to be neglected or misrepresented. In such an instance the importance of registering yourself as a licensed ID or IDCP comes into play and help minimize such liabilities.

I agree with the point that graduate interior designers should be registered and licensed officially but also feel that there are slight disadvantages to it. In my point of view, to be a registered interior designer stand 60% advantages and 40% disadvantages. Being licensed is not because of getting self-respect but what I do care the most is respecting our profession and ability from other design firms or other business platform. I do agree that being profession nowadays is so much important as it could bring trust, respect and also further connections that reach out to more reliable changes and platform to gain experience and self-improve. Besides, being registered as an interior designer could expose and gain extra knowledge through different design associates such as MIID & LAM. For example, MIID offers and provides ceaseless learning and improvement drives to the current pool of enlisted Interior Designers while instructing hopeful inside originators. I feel that design sense do not categories anything in right or wrong therefore broaden up our design horizons and develops insight is very important for designers to maintain further studies in period of time. We do have another trusty example which is the Covid-19. This pandemic also affects how the interior design changes to the pandemic such as social distancing, table shield, more open air openings and so on.
One of the disadvantages that I strongly agree with Shin’s point of view is that how do we differentiate talented interior designer compared to just taking a paper of certificate of registered as profession interior designer? Towards this point of view, I have some confusion but I truly think that to differentiate, it could be based on experiences. People who are truly talented will not be beaten but will fight against and become stronger. Talent is from the inside you and is a gift for yourself but also not forgetting to gain much experience, knowledge, maintain professionalism and credilibity which may balance each other and will be clearly show that you are passed to be a professional interior designer. Forum 3 Summary:
ABSTRACT: Do all buildings need to include disabled-friendly spaces?
ABSTRACT: Malaysia has one of the most stringent fire regulations in the world. What is your opinion on our Fire Safety based on UBBL? Which regulations do you feel are most important and what would your recommendations be to further improve fire safety in buildings? Discuss. (You could also argue that the requirements are too stringent and suggest ways how we could reduce them to allow more creativity in building design).
Disabled people should enjoy the available facilities in urban public places like other people in society. Accessibility and barrier-free environments are the fundamental needs for disabled people to achieve social equity by providing a more accessible design. To achieve people's social rights and peace, it is necessary to consider the experience of disabled people when using them when planning buildings and spaces. However, they often encounter architectural designs that are inconvenient for people with disabilities or unfriendly architectural designs. Does every building need to include buildings that are barrier-free to the community? Apart from Hospitals, which other buildings/spaces are crucial to imbed disabled access? As an interior designer, what thoughtful design can we implement to achieve a more disabled friendly building?

Summary: In my opinion, I feel that yes, all building need to include disabled- friendly spaces but it doesn't mean that all spaces need to be occupy as disable space as it depends more on the purpose of a building. It could be some specific spaces for the PWDs to access easier to the building. For example, a intense sports venues like X-Park Sunway Serene, it is an indoor Go-Kart theme park, they do have a disable parking lot but the interior where is the Go-Kart track area do not have disable features. Further on, according to the UBBL by-law 1990, one building must compulsory include disable facilities. I feel that buildings that are public such as shopping malls, public transports, banks, tourism attractions and even petrol station must apply the disabled- friendly spaces because it could be fair for every person to access equally to the supplies or building and I think that every human being should be treated equally although is a disabled person. As an interior designer, I think we should be considering more towards this issue as it seems designers nowadays are lacking comprehensive thoughts when designing spaces. Spaces not only for aesthetic but also functional and access to everybody including the PWDs.
Despite this forum, I also deeply realize and understand the importance of the disabled facilities towards a building. I do came across a scenario when a disable person could not access a clinic. The clinic does not provide the OKU parking slot and it happens that the disabled person had to park the car for quite a distance and the disabled person rolled the wheelchair to the clinic. It is so heart breaking and felt so pity to watch this scenario. The disabled features do not just design for aesthetic purpose. Even though it could be empty to use but it is definitely make life easier for the PWDs. I think as an interior designer this is what we mean to design for - make life easier and comfortable. Summary: Every building is designed to have enough space, mild and air flow in addition to meet fire protection standards. This set of guidelines, referred to as the Uniform Building By-Laws (UBBL), turned into drafted in 1984 and has been revised several instances over time. However, once a constructing is occupied, renovated and furnished, the extra functions won't necessarily observe hearth safety standards and might emerge as ability hazards to the occupants of the house. Two thirds of the UBBL is on fire protection therefore designers should strictly bare in mind of the importance of designing a space according to the by-laws of fire safety regulations. The fundamental precedence is to save the occupants and minimise harm and injuries need to a fireplace occur. Fire exits should remain clear so as to provide an easy go out for high-rise residents in the occasion of a fireplace. These reason businesses help specify the one-of-a-kind risks a constructing is exposed to and consequently the extraordinary fire protection measures needed. “For example, a residential unit or single house building with a median of six occupants is considered to be low danger rather than a multi-storey office constructing which has an average of six hundred occupants.
Besides, Life security is the incredible objective with respect to fire prosperity and building rules — under the Fire Services Act 1988 (Act 341), building owners for the chiefs is responsible for occupant prosperity through self-disclosure of the fire validation under the fire rule. Additionally, under the Uniform Building By-Laws 1984, it is the base need by-law. Fire safety by-laws are not just black and white wordings but it is very important that designers should keep in mind while designing the interior so that when a fire happens, people could prevent and get out of the building safely in the shortest minute of time. Somehow, I came across a news discussing about “Is Malaysia Outdated on the fire wellbeing guidelines?” I noted that as building plans have developed, it is imperative to receive a presentation based structure administrative framework as opposed to simply observing the prescriptive laws. For example, there ought to be considerations burning confirmation systems, for instance, Do we require a high fire rating or fire compartment if the fire is pretty much nothing? This is a critical of a show based arrangement and can't be driven through the prescriptive code. Today, development laws in various countries are moving from prescriptive to more execution based. It uses fire science, fire planning principles and human science to guarantee people, property and the environment from fire. In the event that everybody had their impact tenaciously, it will be a mutually beneficial arrangement for building proprietors, the Fire and Rescue Department Malaysia, proficient specialists, proficient draftsmen, protection financiers and all tenants of the structure, which could be you and me with our families.
