You don't have to be an IT guru to get a top Google ranking for your website. What you do need is a bit of common sense and the ability to apply a few simple rules. With this in mind we have created the '5 Google Golden Rules' below. Apply them and you are on your way to making it to the top of Google. Rule #1- No Spamming. Google's basic aim is to provide relevant information in response to a search query. So there's no point in trying to get a high ranking for a search term or keyword, if your web page isn't relevant to that term. Worse still by trying to force a keyword onto non relevant content (called 'keyword stuffing') you may be accused of spamming. Google takes a dim view of this practice, and could result in your site being banned from Google. So, no spamming Google please! Rule #2 - Provide Quality Relevant Content It's all about content. If your website consists just of adverts, banners and affiliate links then it will be very hard to get a good Google ranking. Put yourself in the shoes of your target visitors. What do they want to know? Is your web page informative, well written and concise? Is it relevant? Is it likely to answer the questions those searching on your keywords require? The more you match your web page with the interest of your searchers, the better Google ranking you will get. So put yourself in the shoes of the searcher, and really make sure your content delivers. Google will love it, and more importantly, your site visitors will too. Rule #3 - Optimize You Pages Optimizing your web pages is straightforward - it just means making it easy for Google to find out what your website is about. Google looks at a whole range of things on your web page such as the text content, the web address (URL), meta tags, headlines text, picture descriptions, and outbound links, amongst others. You can help Google, and hence your ranking, by using your keywords in these web page attributes, where possible. It's beyond the scope of this article to explain the detail of how you do this, but it's very straightforward, and there are numerous tools available online that will help with basic on-page optimization.

A few hours spent learning about page optimization will pay huge dividends. Rule #4 - Get Relevant Incoming Links Google looks for links from other websites to your site. The theory is the more websites linking to your website, the more visible it will be to Google. However it's not just about quantity - it's back to quality and relevancy again! The more relevant the websites that use your keyword in their link are, the better you will rank. To put it another way, the sites that link to you, should be sites that Google loves as well! So get as many relevant, quality links to your website as you can. Don't be tempted to buy links from 'link farm' services, as Google is getting good at recognising this practice, and may penalise your site, or even worse remove it! Rule #5 - Rinse and repeat Getting and keeping a good Google ranking is not a static task - you can't just do the basics and forget it. Google's methods of ranking changes, your competitors evolve, your content will need updating, and searchers may be using new keywords. In fact a there is a raft of reasons why you should revisit these rules on a regular basis. Keep these '5 Google Golden Rules' in mind, and you won't go far wrong.
