Jo Conroy never fails to put on such fabulous events with her lovely team of Laura Sway and Sarah Davidson. A great day was had by all that were in attendance for the workshop with the legend Rob Fowler. The dancers arrived and settled into their seats ready for the day to begin. I remember there was background music playing and it was the usual party tracks like YMCA and Tiger Feet. The day kicked off with guest DJ Gary Samms who got everybody in the mood for dancing and started us off nice and easy. First teach of the day was a nice easy routine Half a Cha that was a floor split for Yvonne Anderson's dance Straight after the first teach we then got something a bit more challenging to a great track by Dierks Bentley called Woman Amen. More social dancing ensued followed by classic teach from Rob, Intrigue. We had a break for dinner and a buffet was provided.

It was also nice to see Michelle Risley came along to attend the workshop she taught her new dance, Looking At The Moon! Just before we all got back to the dancing, we helped celebrate Rob's half a century birthday and they surprised him with a cake of his favourite football team! After the workshops were finished and we had something to eat we were itching to get back on the floor. Both Gary and Jo kept the floor full all day with a large variety of dances. In the evening Rob did a recap of the workshop dances which were all well received. It was a fantastic day and I highly recommend a visit to the next. Here are the dances taught throughout the day. Dances taught: Half A Cha Woman Amen Intrigue -CLASSIC See Ya Cecilia – Co-choreographed with Laura Sway Amazing Faith – CLASSIC Deeply Completely - CLASSIC

It really is a show not to be missed because you never know what to expect from the Chuckle Sisters! A laugh a minute, these girls will have you laughing along with them in no time. The start of the show focuses on what has been recently taught in class or is newly released and rising in popularity. Suzi highlights choreography from global choreographers who are well known or up and coming.

They think outside the box to link songs/dances to the facts and it could be something old, something new, not borrowed, but could be blue. Let them take you back through time for TOTAL RECALL, which visits dances from yesteryear. These are dances that you may not dance anymore or may have completely forgotten about. There may even be some you've never heard of and might want to look at.

Words escape me on how atmospheric this event was, but I will do my best to put it into words. Firstly, so much organisation goes into this event and helpful hands are a plenty and deserve an applause. We had some fabulous choreographers for the day that included Michelle Risley, Jamie Barnfield, Peter Jones & Anna Lockwood, who were the main line-up for the day. We did get a special teach of Lorna & Cathy Hodgson's new dance. Secondly to all the artistes that give their time to help raise money for such a worthy charity – Lennox Children’s Cancer Fund. We had entertainment from Calico, Richard Palmer, Natalie Thurlow, Kenny Junior, Ed Cox and Cliff Weston. I would like to add that at the end of the night they all pulled together to form a SUPER group and it was just electrifying!

Natalies’ brother Chay came along to help form the super group as the drummer. Made a nice change to dance to Guns ‘n' Roses and Meatloaf with Cher . We were introduced to a lovely new singer to the circuit by the name of Tara Henton – look out for her as she went down a storm! Lois Lightfoot was the DJ for the event and had the extreme task of keeping the running order going smoothly, in which she did a wonderful job. Playing dances in between the choreographers and the live acts, with some sort of limited choice as to not repeat anything the artistes were playing. Lorna has put on such a great charity day for 6 years now (this being my second or third attendance), The event just goes from strength to strength each year and the support of the dancers is just amazing. Dances taught: Michelle Risley – Legends, Look At The Moon Lorna Dennis – Rings Around My Heart co-choreographed with Cathy Hodgson Jamie Barnfield – Stanryck, If It’s Meant To Be Peter Jones – Up & Away -cochoreographed with Anna Lockwood

My show with Darren Mitchell was very interesting and funny. To find out what was popular on the other side of the world made for an interesting show (all my shows are interesting lol)

This show is to bring you different instructors or choreographers each week with their classes top 10 favourite dances. I interview my guest and find out different aspects of their dance background and/or career (ie. How they started, what made them want to teach, if they choreograph how did that first start etc.) It gives the listeners an insight into what dances are popular in different areas up and down the country and across the globe I like to use this opportunity to find out more about the person behind the name. I welcome anyone instructor or choreographer to feature on my show, if they can spare around 2 hours on a Sunday.

Just to give you a brief insight to what we spoke about - Darren told me all about the awards that they have over there in Australia, which I personally didn't know about so it's always a surprise to me as well as the listeners. Catch my show every Sunday from 10am (unless specified for special circumstances) and find out who's who and what's hot . Don't forget if you missed any shows you can always catch up on Mixcloud. Gary Samms Interview on Move Radio with Crystal Boot Award Winner Darren Mitchell

LOVE2LINE MEETS INTERNATIONAL CHOREOGRAPHER CRYSTAL BOOT WINNER I am from Wollongong, Australia which is a coastal city located 1hr and 30mins south of Sydney.

INTERNATIONAL CHOREOGRAPHER

MADDISON GLOVER

I was born into a line dance family so as soon as I could walk, I began dancing in my play pen at dance events. In my speech at the Crystal Boot Awards I explained ‘this breach baby came out dancing to Hot Tamales’. I have 3 older brothers so by the time I came along, of course my mum wanted to enrol her baby girl in dance classes. I began Jazz classes however became bored when I only learnt one - two dances a year. At line dancing, I was learning 2-3 a week! I stopped other forms of dancing and just kept line dancing. The only formal training I received was when I decided to compete at the World Dance Masters and was coached by Rachael McEnaney. I have received an abundance of championship titles within Australia and coached my club ‘Illawarra Country Bootscooters’ where we claimed club of the Championships (of Australia) many times. I have won the Australian Ashby Cup with Simon Ward which was a big highlight for me. I competed with Team Australia at the WDM in Blackpool in 2014 and placed 3rd in my solo division and 1st in our team’s COUNTRY CLASSIC.

After the WDM I decided that I wanted to focus more on teaching workshops. A back injury also forced me to stop competing almost immediately and I haven’t returned to the competition floor since 2016.

The first dance I ever choreographed was with Simon Ward. He was over for dinner and I played him the song TRAVELLING SOLDIER by the Dixie Chicks. This was a very special, heart wrenching song about the fear of a soldier never coming home to his loved one, especially for me as an 8 year old... but I loved it. My second dance was also with Simon a couple of years later called AMERICANO which is an advanced ‘show’ routine. My Dad found this song for us. I am proud of my choreography but if I had to narrow it down I would say:

My Mum saw an advertisement in a local newspaper for Line Dancing in 1993. She informed my Dad who said “I’m not dancing, I’m just coming to watch”. They also took my three brothers. Soon they were all dancing and my father then went on to teach. He is now in his 25th year of teaching. He has 4 classes a week but also covers my 3 classes when I am travelling to teach workshops. He too was a well known Australian Choreographer and is highly respected in the Australian dance community. My Dad began giving me the opportunity to teach here and there at his classes at the age of 13/14. I started my first class (beginners in 2011) when I was turning 16 and still have that class today.

ROCKET TO THE SUN. This was the first dance that ‘took off’ for me. It was choreographed for my first EVER advertised workshop for my best friend, Chris Watson at the Tamworth Tennis Club. It won me my first Australian Award (Beginner Dance of the Year)

Secondly... TWIST & TURNS. My eldest brother showed me the track when we were sitting having a drink by the fire on a Friday night. I immediately fell in love with it, phrased it and the dance came together quite easily. The song is so so powerful, as too are the lyrics. It is about living like tomorrow never comes. This song was also a strong reminder of the importance of life when my Dad was diagnosed with aggressive prostate cancer. We are very blessed that he won the battle. This also won me an Australian Award (Intermediate Dance of the Year) Initially, the inspiration was derived from my brother Kurt. He was an incredible choreographer and set the standard incredibly high He was so so talented. Then to follow my two female idols and dear friends.. Rachael McEnaney & Jo Thompson. I’m a COUNTRY girl through and through so that is my preference. I have 3 classes a week. Beginner Improver Intermediate . To date.. my biggest achievement occurred this year... winning my first CRYSTAL BOOT for Female Personality of the Year. This was a COMPLETE surprise!

I have only just finished University so now I can ‘cut loose’ with my travels but so far I've been to: America New Zealand Fiji Vanuatu New Caledonia Canada Scotland France Spain Indonesia Sweden Thailand Japan England (To follow this year: Switzerland, Denmark, Germany, Austria) I have met so many beautiful people along the way. I have made so many special memories that I will treasure forever. I am one lucky girl who never ever thought that I would have these opportunities presented to me through line dancing. If I weren’t a dancer, I’d be working full time as a primary school teacher. I have just graduated from University with a Bachelor of Primary Education and am currently working as a casual (substitute teacher) whenever I am home.. in between my dance classes at The Barn and travelling for workshops.

Aspirations in dance.... To choreograph and promote the importance of beginner/ improver dances. They are (my bread and butter) and it is so important to promote NEW BLOOD in our sport. To keep making people happy... I can only get out of it what I give. Before I began touring with workshops.. I had to make the decision to give up playing Women’s League Tag . I grew up playing touch football, oztag and women’s league tag. This was a difficult decision but after injuries, I decided to hang up my footy boots and keep my line dancing boots on. Boy am I glad I made that decision.

Timelines with David Morgan Every Monday 10pm -12am

In the morning we received an unexpected phone call to ask if we could collect Scooter as she would be unable to make the journey to Checkley due to an unexpected snowfall. We collected Scooter and drove to Linedancer Magazines very own Betty Drummond who lives in the same area where i hold one of my classes. Scooter surprised us with an announcement of a visit to our class later in the week. On the Tuesday night Scooter attended much to the astonishment of the class members who received a talk about the health benefits as we get older. She then requested that Betty teach Cut A Rug and I taught Take Me Anywhere by Sandra Speck. The evening was enjoyed by all, and the dancers could't believe someone so famous came to their class. They were still talking about it the following week. #Julie Gabriel

Scooter Lee Visits UK Line Dance Club David and myself went to see Scooter Lee at Jean Webb's event at Fancy Feet in Blackpool, The next day Scooter was due to be appearing at an event organised by Ed Lawton in Checkley in aid of LDF (Line Dance Foundation) in association with Move radio.

INTERNATIONAL DJ DANCE CHART World DJ Play List I’ve been dancing for quite a few years now and always used to check Linedancer Magazine’s charts to check which dances were popular. However, over the last few years I’ve noticed that there was a discrepancy in what appeared on the chart and what was danced on the floor.

At present, we have a list of just over 2,700 dance titles.

After publishing the chart I realised that it would always be dominated by the most popular dances and people would soon loose interest. So I added some extras that I thought would maintain people’s interest By keeping a record of the number of plays from the preceding weeks, it would show which dances were climbing the chart, probably the Of course there’s a simple explanation, the most useful feature. Linedancer chart is based on what dances individuals like, not necessarily what they New entries – there are obviously a lot more dances in existence which are not shown on actually dance socially. I’ve had the idea of a Play List chart for some the chart. So anything we have to add is time now, but knew it would be labour shown each week by country where it was intensive to produce. My wife, Maureen, danced. cannot dance anymore due to major back problems so she does the majority of the Choreographer’s Own Dances – this caused a lot of controversy when I decided to data input. launch the chart. I wasn’t going to include We compile all the data on an Excel any of the choreographers dances played spreadsheet, using a different sheet for at their own event. each county that participates. The totals are My reasoning – suppose “Joe Bloggs” has written a dance and plays it every time at his added up on the “World” sheet. weekly socials. The dance would appear on the chart almost 50 times making it appear popular, but if nobody else is dancing it, then it is an unwelcome aberration on the chart.

Welcome to my first edition of this new monthly article which I hope you will all find interesting and informative. I will be taking you on a journey through the last 22 years of my involvement in our treasured pastime. I’ll be looking back at some of the amazing dances and introducing some colourful characters that have created everlasting memories for me. It has not just been about dancing but a life experience which I would like to share with you all. Like for many of you I would never have met so many wonderful people and it is a privilege to call them my friends. So fasten your seatbelts for the journey of a lifetime! Picture it! Swansea. A wet and windy Easter Weekend in 1996. It was the school holidays and my Auntie and Cousins had come to stay with us. My Step Mother came home from work and announced that she had been thinking what we could do to entertain the family. She had seen an advert for a Line Dancing Class being held at the Patti Pavilion on Swansea’s waterfront and we were all going! ‘Please God No!’ I did not just hear her say that! Did I?

It wasn’t the dancing that bothered me, I had been dancing from the age of 3. It was the image or at least what I had seen on TV on shows like The Generation etc. Really not my scene! How would I live this one down at school! So off we trooped with no more than an ounce of enthusiasm. We pulled up out side and you could hear Country Music coming from inside the venue as we walked across the car park. What were we going to be confronted with!!! A sea of cowboy hats and checked shirts!! Well actually no.

Everyone was dressed quite normally. Yes a few Boots in sight but really that was all. Up on the stage was a very smart, glamorous woman in Western attire but not the stereotyped image. At this point I could not have conceived what an influence this lady was going to have on my future. This lady was the late Ruth Elias! A D&G Instructor, UCWDC Judge and the Mother Of The Frisco Dance Family. It was now time for us to be put through our paces and the first dance she taught us was Cowboy Charleston. We all mastered it quite well. But at this point I was still not convinced! Music a bit twangy! The track used was Bring It In Down To My House by Asleep At The Wheel. Second dance was Stroll along Cha. Now this was a little more challenging. Pivot turns! Changing the weight from one foot to the other. Having danced for years this wasn’t an issue for me. Ruth was so easy to follow as an instructor her explanations were so clear. Now the Pivots caused a riot for my family. I kept saying ‘listen to what to what she’s telling you’! Haha. I really loved this dance and the track used was Un Momento Alla by Rick Trevino. As some of you know this became the track for Cha Cha Lengua. Lovely flowing track and hadn’t realised Line Dancing had any of those! To me we were going to the scuffing and slapping etc!

Lastly came Tush Push! Shuffles! Shuffles with pivot turns!! Shuffles with pivot turns at speed!!! What a laugh we had with this! Everyone going off in all directions. The track as I recall was All You Ever Do by the Mavericks. So there we have it! A great night was had by all! Surprisingly! This was meant to be a one off family night out but I was hooked. Line dancing certainly was not what the media were portraying! So yes I went back the following week! The rest you can say is history. 10 Fabulous Dances Ruth Taught Me! 1. TEXAS STOMP – Ruth Elias Fast As You by Dwight Yoakam 2. CRAZY LEGS – Greg Underwood We Dared The Lightening by The Bellamy Brothers 3. THE ROCK AND ROLL WALTZ – Max Perry Rock & Roll Waltz by Scooter Lee 4. Raining Glitter is a great upbeat improver dance to a fabulous track of the same name from Kylie's new album. The track is a such a happy sing-a-long song and the dance has been well received at all my classes. The steps are easy to master but i particularly like the diagonal shuffles section. If you are looking for a fun improver dance give this a try. Choreographed by Kate Sala and Rob Fowler.

DO YOUR BIT FOR THE LDF The Line Dance Foundation (LDF) was founded in 2007 by Linedancer Magazine. It is a Registered Charity which offers financial support to people who have earned their living or part of their living through line dance and, for whatever reason, find themselves in difficulties. The Foundation asks social dancers and professionals alike to help raise funds but also to be the eyes and ears of the charity and to make nominations for grants. More information can be found on the Foundation website at www. linedancefoundation.com If every Line dance club could hold just one fund-raising event a year the Foundation would be able to help more people more effectively.

Here are our Hot picks and recommended dances for the month. This month we have split the scripts into levels to make it easy for you to choose a dance.

&

Ricks Country Corner From Keith Urban titled “Graffiti U” this seems to continue where his last Album “Ripcord’ Left off. The Album includes three previously released songs “Parallel Lines” “Coming Home” & # Me Too movement inspired song “Female” altogether the album consists of 15 tracks but there’s a couple intros that didn’t need to be added. There are tracks to suit everyone, my favourite being “Texas Time” great upbeat track to which there is a dance choreographed already (Can’t say to much as this hasn’t been released yet). Overall this Album seems to represent the equality of the Female with four tracks featuring Shy Carter on “My Wave”,Kassi Ashton on “Drop Top” Lindsay Ell on “Horses” and the track “Coming Home” (Ft Julia Michaels) which is Keith’s latest single. I rate this Album a Must for all Keith Urban fans With a score of 9/10. Keith never disappoints me. I think he is one of the most innovative "country" artists around, and sometimes his quirky choices have to "grow on me" but overall, I reckon another huge hit Rick Culley

Here's the Graffiti U track listing: "Coming Home" "Never Comin' Down" "Same Heart" "My Wave" "Parallel Line" "Drop Top" "Way Too Long" "Horses" "Gemini" "Texas Time" "Love the Way It Hurts (So Good)" "Female" "Steal My Thunder"

The One That Got Away Ellvie’s Escapees - Teacher & Dancer for over 20 years, she shares her passion for line dancing and finds hidden gems long since forgotten or never discovered.

As a dancer I think it is great to have a chance to bring back a dance that has been forgotten and to give it another chance to be brought back to the dance floor. In this issue of Love2Line I have chosen a dance that I taught in one of my classes back in 2010, but unfortunately I never saw it danced anywhere else and that is such a shame because it is a great dance. The dance is called Leaving On Monday, a 64, 2 wall, improver level dance choreographed by Sadiah Heggernes. The music is 'Monday Morning' sung by Melanie Fiona. Why do I like this dance? Well to begin with I absolutely love the music. Upbeat, foot tapping rhythm with great vocals which is the first thing I look for in a line dance.

Although it is a 64 count dance, there is nothing to catch you out, no tags or restarts and I think it is a very (yes I am going to say my favourite word) achievable dance. Although it is improver level, there is plenty in the dance to appeal to higher level dancers. There are quite a few hold steps which means that you are not tripping over your feet to try and keep up with the music. There is plenty of scope to put your own interpretation to the dance and I particularly like section 2 with the out, hold, out, hold, coaster step, hold. The choreography lends itself to the music and it is a pleasure to dance. Bearing all this in mind, I can't understand why this dance never seemed to take off and maybe you teachers out there could bring this one back from the black hole in outer space that it seems to have disappeared in. Look out for another 'One That Got Away' in the next issue of Love2Line Ellvie Wood

As with all new ventures it is a case of trial and error and ironing out teething problems. We hope that our magazine will entertain you and help maintain your passion for line dancing. We would love to hear from you about your line dancing experiences. Tell us how you got started. How do your family and friends feel about your dancing or do they share it with you? Have you been on any dancing holidays and would like to share your memories and adventures? Have you any questions that other line dancers may be able to help with?

This magazine is for you so don’t be shy, we would love to hear from you.
