The
Head of Primary says ... Do we give our children what they really need: • Love • Time, not money • A listening ear • Motivation to persevere • Firmness with kindness • Consequences • Forgiveness
2012 saw us bid a well loved and much experienced Mrs de Villiers farewell and welcome Ms Roth in her place. The Grade 4 expansion process blessed us with Ms Ras, a teacher with Maths and Science as her majors. This year we are sad to say farewell to Mrs Jacobs and her family as they relocate to Oranjemund. Mrs Kankowski Jacobs will follow in her experienced footsteps. With the expansion of the Primary School, we introduce a second Grade 5 class in 2014. Mr Ambambi has been appointed to teach Maths and Science in this position.
TIME
My heart is deeply troubled about the innocence of our children that is eroding and that less and less time is available to spend with our most treasured assets.
TECHNOLOGY
Technology is both a blessing and a curse. We are the adults. We need to be informed, talk to other parents, educate ourselves and our children and set boundaries in place to protect them from the negative influences that it brings.
?
Cellphones – do our children need smart phones if all we want is to have them contact us
?
Have we protected our children from content that is harmful on the television and the internet
?
Have we taken the time to talk to our children about how to use technology wisely
?
Do we really know what sites our children are visiting and what types of messages they are sending
? ?
Do we set time limits for usage Where is the cellphone / tablet at bedtime
Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it. Proverbs 22:6
Lesley Saunders Head of Primary
Listen earnestly to anything your children want to tell you, no matter what. If you don't listen eagerly to the little stuff when they are little, they won't tell you the big stuff when they are big, because to them all of it has always been big stuff. - Catherine M. Wallace

Poems The best part of the Science day was when we went to the lab and got the chance to be scientist through making slime. The feeling of having slime on my hands was just so funny but “gross”. Once we pressed the slime it became solid, the moment we let go it began to run like crazy. My favorite part of the Science Day was when we did the colour changing milk experiment in our class. What makes the colour changing milk experiment so special is the way the colors start to move around after the soap was added to the milk. At the end of the day we had the chance to see a few animals from Naankuse, this is when I saw the baby baboon in a nappy.
Lara My favorite part of the Science Day is when we went down to the science lab. We made “goo” out of flour and water. After mixing those two ingredients we added green soap. Who would have thought that those three ingredients create “goo” which was pretty messy? I also enjoyed the part when we saw a baby baboon, however during the time when we were there he was moody. We did not get the chance to touch him. My sister later told me afterwards that the baboon jumped on her friend. In the box below were meerkats and mongooses. One of the meerkats poked out of the cage. I thought this was funny.
Nathan The “coolest” part of Science Day was the science lab. The time was incredible, as we had to make slime. For this experiment we had to choose a partner, Azaylee was my partner, which was really fun. The baby monkey we saw came from Naankuse. He wore a nappy which was very cute for me. During the day we were dressed up as scientists, I had a mustage on my face and everybody was steering at me.
But the best part about my friend, Whatever happens? He is always there for me!
Keith My best friend
My best friend is like a trend, She is nice, I never think twice, She is fun and funky and not chunky. She is gentle yet not a rental. She is like my sister, Can you see Tonia and I drink tea? She is like a fragile flower She is always soft, cuddly and buff.
Alicia The best part of going to the nursery was the part where I planted my very own Petunia. The soil was nice and soft and cold. But before we did the planting we walked around and looked at all the beautiful plants and all the different trees. The smell in the nursery was just divine. What I liked the most was all the different roses and water fountains.
Ivan My favourite sport

The adventure
My dog poem
One night my ship broke in halve. So, I swam to an island. There I waited for the morning. In the morning the boy went through the Alligator Alley. The boy ran from the Alligators, as they looked extremely scary. Now, I started to swim through the yellow slime pit, past the hidden villages. After gaining energy I started to run around Devil Mountain, over the blood Lagoon. During the night I saw sharks so I started to run and scream. After reaching the vampire village I’ve decided to sleep over at the Forest of Doom. Here I felt save and warm. The next I climbed on Devil mounting and I found something really interesting. First I could believe my eyes, but it was treasure. What could be inside? I opened it with care and suddenly an ugly yellow slime appeared. Under the yellow slime I found tons of gold. Ahhhhhhh!

I want the red glue, but instead I got blue. The sun was quit yellow, which made me mellow although it was bright! It looked on my right and saw a green trawl trying to kill a mole.
I like dogs, and I have one Julian Dogs are cute and fun, Especially playing in garden where we run!
Airi Trip to the nursery
I enjoyed walking around the nursery and looking at all the different plants. Before putting the soil in our pots, the lady from the nursery gave us a seedling. The soil was cold and wet. Now, we had to put the soil in and tap it down softly to make the seedling ready to grow. We watered the little plant. Our Petunia’s are ready to grow. Yippy!

My favourite food is my mom’s mince pot. The reason why I like it the most? It just tastes delicious and reminds me of home. The best way of explaining is to put the stove on and put a pot on. The mince is added to the pot to make it much more tastier. Now to add some flavor: add some sea salt, coriander and

Gert Trip to the nursery
Today we went to the nursery to plant a beautiful flower. Before we started, Gina and I wandered around to look at all the gorgeous plants. The nursery lady gave pots to us. Now we took a little bit of soil to fill up the pot. We then received our plant, which we put into the pot. We then had to fill up the gap with soil and press it slightly. I had a great time planting the flower.
Samantha Who lives here?
Once upon a time there was a house. It was next to the woods. When I looked it the door shut. I heard a voice saying, “ Come into the house”. I went in the house, which were five stories high. Suddenly a Zombie starts chasing me. I ran to the second storey. In a spur of moment it was nighttime. Unaware a dog comes around the corner and started to talk, “YOU WILL DIE IN ONE DAY”. If you fight back you will suffer. Without a warning I realized it was a bad dream.

Azaylee Who lives here?
One upon a time I was walking by a path. I noticed a new street but only one house in it. The house looked old and spooky and I heard a strange noise saying, “Come inside, OHHHHHH”. I thought it was very strange. So, I said, “I’m just imagining things”, so I went home. The next day I went there to see the street, but not the house. I closed my eyes and opened them. Suddenly I saw it and went inside. “Hello?” Is anybody here? But all I could hear was “OHHHHHHH”. You must stay said the strange voice. I stayed for one night, but I had terrible nightmares. When I woke up it was just a horrific dream. When I got up I went to the kitchen and when I saw blood for juice and skeleton for bread, I was disgusted and ran away. This was also the reason for not coming back.

Alice Hunting for shark teeth
There was a young lady who was working in a shark teeth shop. She lived with her husband called Ulra. She got a baby and called her Trina. When Trina was four years old, her mother passed away. But before she died she gave Trina a special necklace and said; “If you find another shark teeth, I will be alive”. She looked around but could not fine one. When the father heard it he wanted the tooth but then he made a plan. He said; “I am going to look”. If you find it, bring it too me, then I’ll tell you if it is a shark tooth. Then you can have it but it was a lie. He wanted to take the tooth. The next morning Trina found the tooth and gave it to the dad. He then took it and ran away. Then it was to late and she never recovered.

Athletics I did pretty well, it’s fair to say. I came first in the marathon, first in the sprints and second in the hurdles. My favourite race was the marathon because I came first! But it was tiring. I was very hot after the athletics. I drank a heck of a lot!
Alexander At athletics I was in Rudolph. Rudolph won. The marathon was hard. Long jump was fun and high jump difficult. We had watermelon. It was juicy! I was nervous but excited. We sang and danced.
At the athletics I was so excited! When the gun went for hurdles I was running so fast I couldn’t stop and I didn’t fall. I went over them. Then I went to shot put. I did very well. Then I got a hot dog from the tuck shop. After that I went to sprints. I was running fast! Then I went to high jump. I jumped high and it was hot.
Declan
Tyra My athletics was quite fun but I got lost now and then when I did the marathon. I don’t know which place I got but it was long. I saw that Rudolph won and I am very proud of them even though I am in Ernest. Their talent is athletics and ours is galas. When the grown ups ran their race I was amazed! I didn’t think they could go faster than us!

Our trip to Narrec My trip to NARREC was amazing! Let me tell you a little about my trip. When we got to NARREC this kind lady named Liz showed us all the birds and she had three adorable dogs, two were girls and one was a boy. The first bird was a falcon and we saw Liz feed the falcon. Then we took a walk and we had to pick different grasses and that pert was fun. So then we looked for different foot prints and then we walked to the cages and we saw birds with different feathers and beaks and claws.
Lapita When we got to NARREC we sat under the shade. Then Liz showed us a pyramid. It had the sun, sand, water and air. Then the dogs came. We drew our own bird and we could name it so I named mine The Rainbow Belly because I made him a belly with lots of colours. I made my bird live in a tree on a wetland. My bird looked funny. Then the bus came. I was so sad. Then we took our bags and went to the bus. When we left, we gave Liz some money for the birds’ food. And that is the end!

shadow! It was very fun at NARREC! But we had to go home.
Savannah At NARREC Liz showed us a pyramid and they were sun, sand, water and air. Then she told us that we share because we care. After that we went to feed the falcon. Then we went for a walk and we had to different kinds of grass. Then we had to find footprints and we found a kudu’s footprints. When we were done looking at the footprints we went to see the hens and chickens and they were so cute!
Martha At NARREC we saw the owls. Liz sent Isaac, Lapita and Micharla to run around the owl cage and we saw the owl turn its head. We also saw vultures and we saw a black eagle. Then we went to eat. We saw mice. Liz had three dogs. We learnt that the birds’ feathers are waterproof. Liz gave us some paper to draw a bird. Then the bus came to take us back to school. I really had fun!
Marleny
When we went to NARREC on Thursday it took us a long time to get there. Liz took us to a crow called Blacky. Blacky had one eye. Then Liz told us a story about Blacky. Blacky went to a farmer and the farmer looked after her. Blacky went away and came back when the farmer was out. She ate one of his lambs. He nearly hit her with a stick but his wife said no.

Amelia Our trip to the nursery
Yesterday we went to plant a seedling. We planted petunias. Some were pink, some were purple and some even had white on the edge. When I came into the nursery I saw an old bakkie that was made in nineteen forty-three and it had badges on it. There were also old bikes. There were six fountains and lots of different coloured flowers. There were lots of ornaments and pots and there were two kind ladies. There were also lots of fruit and vegetables. There was a greenhouse with lots strawberry plants in it.
Stasia Tree Story
I am a tree that lives in the park. I am a tree that has green colourful leaves. Boys and girls play and climb on me and it hurts! I see a lot of colourful birds on me and they build a lot of nests in me. A lot of insects climb on and it makes me itch and my leaves get old. When it got to winter all the leaves are gone. Birds went away and animals went home. In spring a lot of leaves were growing.
Mwangala The hideous House
As I came up to the house my knees were trembling with fear. The house looked abandoned and cursed. The mysterious house was spooky. When I was at the door the mat said unwelcome. I wanted to go back but I knew that was wrong. The door was wide open so I went in and saw the living room was ugly and creepy. When I went into the kitchen it smelt horrible like a troll made something.
Maria The Blood Covered house
The house looked really bloody and had lots of broken windows. There was an old torn teddy bear on the burnt grass. There were cracks all over the wall. The unwelcome mat was covered in red stuff! Inside the house there were dead bodies lying everywhere! As I approached inside I saw red eyes looking. The person had ears that looked like a werewolf.
Luca The Monster House.
The house I saw was horrifying. But I was a brave girl and walked on the grass. When I heard the grass crackling I got to the mat. It was unusual as it said unwelcome. I was scared and the windows were broken. The door slowly opened and screeched! What I saw inside was a tall figure and a decayed body. The tall figure with beady eyes invited me in.

What does Easter mean to the Grade 4A's? Easter is like a nice day when you get to eat chocolate, but Easter is not all about that. It’s about Jesus. That’s what Easter means to me. Easter also means that Jesus died for our sins. Thank you Jesus.

This is what I read from the literature, The Dragon’s Eye. 5. Poem by Caleb Titus
DEATH ISLAND Death Island is far away I’ll tell you more, if I may. There’s a man called Dead Man Dave, you can guess he died in a cave.
CHEETAH FARM – Liam Adonis Day 1: We went on the bus and our bus driver was Titus. We were on the bus for a long time. Moroni, Michael, Aidan, Hivi , Caleb and I were singing on the bus. After a while we decided to make a house out of blankets. A short while after that, we arrived at the Crocodile Farm. I saw baby crocodiles, I also even touched it. Then I saw the adult crocodile, it was huge. Some of us got to feed the fish. After driving for a long time on a very bad road, we arrived at the Cheetah farm. We were put into groups for different activities which included cooking, doing dishes, bird watching and making a play. In the night we told scary stories and had supper. Day 2: My group had to prepare breakfast and wash the dishes. After a while we went with a tour guide, Ignatius, to see the cheetahs. We arrived at the enclosure where they were held. We saw the cheetahs and learned interesting facts about them. After a while we left the cheetahs and went to see a dog and a sheep that got hurt, the dog got hurt in a fight. Later we went to a museum and saw the big cat family tree. There were skulls of big cats, there was a lot of things in there after we went to feed the cheetahs, it was very exciting to see the cheetahs eat. After that we made a play with stuffed animals. We found a place to sit and had chocolate muffins with cooldrink, we played on the playground. After we got back at the camp, there was this event which we did. The three teams did water balloon tossing. We made war paint and had a water balloon fight. At night we roasted marshmellows and dipped it in a chocolate dip and then went to bed. Day 3: We woke up early in the morning to pack and clean our rooms. Then we left the CCF. When we were driving we sang songs. After a while we arrived at Wimpy and had breadfast. After a long drive we arrived back at school.
CHEETAH FARM - Jana Swanepoel The Cheetah farm was the event of the year!! Though, it’s funny that you’ve been waiting for this the whole year, and as quick as
a flash, it’s over. I loved all the make-yourself-dirty activities. My favourite one was the apple pass. You have to pass a syrup covered apple to the next person, but the tricky part is, you don’t use your hand, you use your NECK! We also had a water pistol fight! Josh, Krynauw, Dylan and I did some spider hunting and found a little baboon spider. We sang songs around the fire. The food was delicious!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We were divided into 3 groups. Each group had a name and a chant. My group was the Tigers and our chant went like this: “We are the tigers, we’re faster than bikers, we like to eat hikers and we’re always the strikers!” Everything was awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
THE CHEETAH CONSERVATION FUND TRIP – Anoushka Seha Grade 4A got to go to the cheetah farm in Otjiwarongo. The bus trip was fun. We stopped at the crocodile farm and we had lunch. We looked at fully-grown crocs, and baby ones. Each of us shared rooms. The girls got room 10. Other boys shared with each other. We cooled off with some juice and got our rooms ready. Mrs. Pretorius told us rules, then we played rounders. We were put into groups. Each group made a chant. We also had to make a play. We ate dinner, had a shower and “went to bed”. The girls in room 10 talked until we were told off. Next morning Krynauw banged on the doors to wake us up. Later on we went on an adventure walk. It was cool. We looked in the museum. They had a dog and a goat kid at the clinic. We went back to camp and had lunch. My hair was so messed up. We went and watched the cheetahs being fed. Scary! They raced into the eating area and eat donkey meat. Eew!!! We went to camp and did these awesome activities, passing dirty balloons, holding a balloon and walking with a cup of water on your head, holding balloons and using your mouth to get Astros and passing sticky apples with your neck to each other. Last but not least the water fight!!! It was fun. We went to bed after we showered. The next morning we woke up early and left. No!!! We stopped for burgers at the Wimpy. They were disgusting. We got back safely.

Science Fun Day in Grade 4B The Grade 4s learned all about recycling. We learned the meaning of reduce, re-use and recycle. We paired with a friend. We made environmentally friendly glue with flour and water. I say from now on we should not buy glue but rather make it ourselves.
Alana On the fun day I enjoyed making glue. Putting our robot together was also fun, though hard to make it stand. We used recycled material to dress our robots. I enjoyed watching the other groups. It was extremely fun! Tia and Chaze had the nicest material on their robot. I loved working in a team and definitely want to do it again next year.
Olivia My class and I had so much fun. We all felt great about the fact that we could use recycled material. Then Miss Ras finally told us what we a going to build a robot! It was so cool, we used boxes, bags and plastic.
The thing I liked the most about the Science Fun Day was that we built a robot and wore sivvies. Shé, Vseteka and I worked on a robot that didn`t really looked like it was much of robot. Caleb and Jessica were the first ones to finish their robot. We also had a class discussion on recycling and how important it is. Unfortunately we had to clean up afterwards. At the end we got a piece of string and a button to make a toy called, “woer-woer”.
Morné Today`s headline on the special day I like to call Science Fun Day. I m your writer, Liya Herunga. On science fun day. our class 4B, made robots . We made all kinds of different robots tall robots, short robots and even haired robots . Now we were adding our materials, like buttons for the eyes. My partner was Alana. At the end the teacher gave us a deadline and the pressure was on to finish! Some robots were stuck to the wall to be able to stand up. Thank you to my class for a wonderful day and also our wonderful teacher Ms Hannamie Ras!!!!

Grade 4B Cheetah Foundation Fund trip
Aidan and the Schwartz family wish you a prosperous 2014!
58 The first day I heard we were going to the Cheetah farm I was full of joy. When we boarded the bus, I was so excited. We were on the road for 4 hours; luckily I was with my friends. Our first stop was at the Crocodile farm, where we saw tortoises and crocodiles. After that we went to the Cheetah farm, we got roommates and slept in bungalows. That afternoon we went and played rounders. The next day we went to see the Cheetahs, we saw Little C, the leader of the pack. In our groups we had to wash dishes and help prepare the food. On our way back we had breakfast at Wimpy. We had a lot of fun and a great adventure.
Pandu AmunjÊ On the way to the camp in the bus was quite eventful. I was sitting next to Hannah, which was fun. The first time we stopped was at a garage. I donated a dollar to Ms Ras for the toilet. Soon we were at the Crocodile farm. We had food and drinks there. There were crocodiles of all sizes: big ones, small ones, medium ones and even tortoises! At the camp I was part of group 2. That night there were thunder, lighting and rain. We went to bed at 10:30. We had a delicious dinner and played fun games. For now that’s enough, ahead of us an adventure awaits!
On our way to the Cheetah farm we had lots of fun. Our teacher divided us into groups. At nig ht time we all did our plays in front of the camp fire! The next day we went on a guided to ur and learned about: Play trees, other tre es, how Cheetahs live there and survival. We als o played rounders. We had a lot of fun!

Katie Callesen I am in Grade 4B. We went to the Cheetah farm on the 18th of September 2013. The Cheetah farm was so nice! The day after we arrived there, we went for a walk. Our guide, Ignatius told us a lot about Cheetahs and where they live. He was very nice. Later that day we went to the Cheetah feeding and I saw how Little C stole Blondie`s food, it was very funny! We also went to
the Cheetah centre and museum. We really had loads of fun!!! SO HELP SAVE THE CHEETAHS!

Science Experiments In the science class, the Grade 5s worked in groups to perform experiments to test different soil types.
Science Funday On Science Funday the Grade 5 class made their own compasses to determine where true north is and proved that seedlings need water to germinate. The four groups, the Shrikes, Eagles,
Flamingoes and Hawks planted their seedlings, and started to water them according to the inscriptions on each container.

Gr 7 Kuiseb Canyon Hike The Grade 7 hike this year was to the Kuiseb River Canyon as the Fish River had been closed to hikers. This was new territory for the school and the hike leaders as we had not done this before. It was also an opportunity for the Grade 7 class to visit the Gobabeb Desert Research and Training Centre and the coast to see firsthand the plants and animals that exist in these ecosystems. The hike proved to be more challenging than the Fish River but more spectacular! A Scientific Investigation was carried out at Gobabeb where the children answered the following question. “Which ecosystem at Gobabeb contained the greatest number and greatest diversity of Toktokkie Beetles; the River, the Dunes or the gravel plains? Having collected specimens and completing the research process, it produced surprising results! The stay in Swakopmund allowed the children more free time and time to shop! A trip to the lagoon in Walvis Bay gave the children an opportunity to learn about the importance of the lagoon to Namibia and to study sea birds with the help of binoculars. They also learned about the salt works. At low tide we joined a scientist in the rock pools in Swakopmund and investigated the plants and animals that lived there. A great time was had by all!

Science Science Fun Day We held our annual Science Fun Day so that the students could experience Science and feel more excited about the upcoming Science Fair.
Grade 5 had a visitor: Mr Thys Rall He came to show them how not to get lost in the wild when you don’t know where north is. They made their own compasses.
Grade 1 had a visitor: Mr Nycander He brought a macaw which is a biiiig bird with beautiful colours and an amazing voice.
Grade 6 and 7 had a visitor: Marlice van Vuuren from the N/a'an ku sê Foundation. She brought a baby baboon, a baby meerkat and four baby banded mongooses. They also experimented with different chemical reactions and air.
Grade 2 did some experiments with air to see that it takes up space, has mass and can make things move. Grade 3 did all kinds of experiments with chemical reactions and made slime in a real Science Lab Grade 4 had a creative morning recycling rubbish to make amazing toys
Grade 7 did their own field study on ecosystems within the school grounds. They also visited the Science Lab to see light through a prism and experimented with different chemical reactions to create heat. They also had a visitor: Mr Julian Fenessy who came to tell them all about giraffes.
Grade 1 This year, the Grade 1s and 2s focused on Animal Science for the annual Science day and were privileged to attend a presentation on wild and captive Macaws in Peru. The presentation was headed by a world-renowned Macaw expert, Mr Eduardo Nycander. Rainforest Expedition is a Peruvian Ecotourism company. Since 1989 their guests and lodges, have added value to standing tropical rain forest turning it into a competitive alternative to unsustainable economic uses. The Tambopata Macaw Project was begun in 1989 by Eduardo Nycander (supported by the Wildlife Conservation Society) with the goal of studying the ecology and natural history of large macaws so that this information could be used to help protect these birds throughout the tropics. The site chosen for this research was on the upper Tambopata River in the center of a huge uninhabited track of pristine tropical lowland forest. The Tambopata Research Center was founded to host this research project. Intense investigations were conducted from 1990 – 1993 under Eduardo’s direction. After this point the research continued at a slower pace as Eduardo’s focus shifted towards creating the ecotourism company Rainforest Expeditions to ensure that the Tambopata Research Centre would remain open and active. In November of 1999, I (Don Brightsmith) joined the team and took over the direction and day-to-day operations and direction of the Macaw Project with the blessing and aid of Eduardo. Since 1999 the project has produced many new publications on a variety of topics and expanded to include studies of parrot biology and clay licks throughout southeastern Peru. Working as a mentor and consultant, I have taken the information learned in south-eastern Peru and applied it in many areas of the American tropics and even Indonesia. A major goal of the
study now is to provide opportunities for young scientists to run satellite projects under the macaw project umbrella, so that Peru and other parts of Latin America will have a cadre of trained scientists willing and able to tackle the conservation and research problems in the coming decades.

The dancing spaghetti didn’t go so well because we did not stir well. I liked the racing boat because I had to put dishwashing liquid on my finger and put it behind the boat. Then we made food colouring and it was fun. We had to put some milk in the bowl and some food colouring into the bowl. Then we had to take an ear bud and put it in the food colouring. We took the other side and put some dishwashing liquid and then the colours spread out.
Martha
My Science Fun Day. Guess what I did? We saw a glass flame that changed green, blue, yellow and red. But our dancing spaghetti really didn’t work! But the changing colour milk was amazing! It was yellow, green and red.

During Science Fun Day I went to the Science lab. We watched the lady make different colour flames and it was green, red, purple and iron sparks. We went back to class and we did some experiments. Our table did the boat race and it was fun! Next we made dancing spaghetti. It made fizz. It was supposed to go up and down but it didn’t.

Colour changing milk was a very beautiful thing to see because it went out like a big beautiful flower. It was fun to see the boats race without you touching them! The boats were very wet when we were done! We put dishwashing liquid behind the boat and it moved! The lab was so cool! We made green slime. It felt kind of hard but it would leak down the ball I made!

On the day of Science Fun Day at school, we went to a very nice Science lab. We made slime out of maizena and green water. It was super cool! After the making of slime, Ms Austin showed us a burner. Then she lit it up and put little chemicals in the flames and the fire turned a different colour! Everyone liked it! After Art we went to see a baby monkey. It had a nappy on. It was really funny!

dishwashing liquid. What an exciting experiment!

The best part of the day was when we went to the lab and got the chance to be scientist through making slime.
When I went to the lab we made goo but it did not work! Then I saw that it was fun. We saw a Bunsen burner. The Bunsen burner turned red and blue and made sparks! You wonder how it made sparks. It was iron that made the sparks. It looked cool! We had a good time.
The dancing spaghetti didn’t work. Last year it did work but this year no. Racing boats was such fun. You put water in a tray, then you cut a triangle from cardboard and put it in the water. You take a little bit of dishwashing liquid and then look what happens! Colour changing milk was so exciting! You put water in a bowl, put some milk just to cover the bottom, put in some food colouring in with droppers, then put in the ear buds and see what happens. On the other side put a little bit of

My favorite part of the Science Day is when we went down to the science lab.

82 Grade 4 This Year Valentines day wasn’t really full of love and romance, it was actually full of Science. I am in Grade 4A and our theme was recycling. First everyone and their partner got a paper with the recycling icon on it. They had to colour in the icon and come up with a name for their partnership. My partner and I were the “Reusers”. Next we made glue out of flour. All you do is put flour in a zip-
lock plastic bag and add water until it’s as sticky as glue. And last but not least, we made a robot out of all sorts of recycled things. For example, buttons, bottle caps, bottles, matches, match boxes, odd materials and all sorts of different recycled things. At the end of the day all the participants of the class had to take turns and stand in front of the class to exhibit their robots. It was a really fun day. That’s probably why they call it a ‘Science Fun Day’!

The Grade 7 class started the day with a field study of a local habitat. They observed animal and plants present and identified a possible food web. They focused on one animal and completed a drawing of it. Marlice van Vuuren from N/a’an ku sê visited to talk about animals in the Savannah ecosystem. She brought an orphaned
baboon, meerkat and 3 banded mongooses. Not only did they learn about these three species but also about the work done at N/a’an ku sê. The day ended with Julian Fenessy giving a very interesting talk on the different species of Giraffe in Africa.

Cultural Activities Entrepreneur’s Day, Art Exhibition and Talent Show The 2013 Entrepreneur’s Day was held on 2 October. This year we combined it with the talent show and the art exhibition. We wanted to create a real market atmosphere. The result was a vibrant evening that buzzed. The presence of the high school SMC’s was an added bonus and we thank them for their support. The parents turned up in droves and they enjoyed watching the talent show. The students performed confidently and it would have been quite understandable if people had thought that they were at a school for performing arts. We have natural performers in our school!
The musical, magical and dramatic skills were clearly evident. The classrooms were alive with the wonderful art displays. The level of art in the primary school is rather inspiring. The variety of stalls by the Grade 7s included reading stands, homemade preserves, crafts, milkshakes and ice cream, games, beauty therapy and digital cards. This evening was the culmination of a year’s work and the results were rewarding. In conclusion, St Paul’s students are confident, performing and artistic businessmen!

Chess Chess, being one of the most competitive games to play, is always more popular amongst boys, but both boys and girls enjoyed playing in the chess challenges. The winner for the first trimester was Josua Cloete, second trimester, Hiren Naidoo and third trimester, Josua again. That makes Josua Cloete our overall Chess Challenge winner of the year. Congratulations to you! Girls don’t despair. There is always another opportunity. The great thing about girls is that they never give up! They act like real ladies, even when defeated. Thank you to each one of you who gave up your Friday afternoons for this. You made it extra special.
INTERESTING FACTS ON CHESS • The word "Checkmate" in Chess comes from the Persian phrase "Shah Mat," which means"the King is dead." • The longest game of chess that is theoretically possible is 5,949 moves. • The folding chessboard was invented by a priest who was forbidden from play chess. The priest found a way around it by making a folding chessboard. When folded together and put on a bookshelf, it simply looked like two books. • During World War II, some of the top Chess players were also code breakers. British masters Harry Golombek, Stuart Milner-Barry and CH O'D. Alexander was on the team which broke the Nazi Enigma code. • Chess is called the game of kings, because for many centuries it was played primarily by nobility and the upper classes. • A 7 year-old Filipino boy Alekhine Nouri became the youngest FIDE (World Chess Federation) Master in the world, after only 2 years of learning the game! • The current world champion is Viswanathan Anand, who won the World Chess Championship 2007 and successfully defended his title against former world champion Vladimir Kramnik in the World Chess Championship 2008, against Veselin Topalov in the World Chess Championship 2010 and against Boris Gelfand in the World Chess Championship 2012.

Library IT Committee This committee consists of skilled and committed parents and teachers. They are all working together towards a common goal which is to make the IT centre the most popular and best educational facility on the school premises.
with the set-up and the functioning of the IT centre. We are looking forward to working together in the future to ensure that everyone is in line with the development of technology all over the world.
The IT committee was established to assist the school with IT. Certain processes had to be put into place to ensure that most value could be gained from the money allocated to IT. It has been a concern for many parents that the media centre in its current state does not provide pupils with the necessary resources to prepare them for today's internet economy. One of the major projects undertaken by the IT committee has been to get funding for upgrading the media centre and to develop a strategy that will ensure that our children’s education regarding IT is up to standard. The committee consists of parents who are IT professionals who volunteered their time to make decisions and collectively provide advice. This democratic process ensures that there is a balanced debate around spending resources towards the IT infrastructure.

91 IT Club An IT club was started, to give some interested pupils the opportunity to get fast-track learning on various topics related to IT. This includes programming, networking, databases and web development. The idea was also to have the best performing students on hand to assist with the setup and maintenance of the school infrastructure. Pupils will benefit from the process in that they are gaining experience in IT, while establishing an IT resource base. All pupils are welcome to join the club, irrespective of their level of experience. The goal of the club is to participate in next year's Southern African Computer Olympiad.

eLearning Conference 29-31 May 2013 I am most grateful that I was able to attend the 8th eLearning conference which was held in Windhoek. Over 1500 delegates from all over the world took part in the theme of “Tradition, Change and Innovation”. The conference was officially opened by our Prime Minister, Dr Hage Geingob. Various sessions, addressing different aspects of IT, were held throughout the conference. One aspect that came through often, was that we need to move away from a teacher-centred teaching style to a student-centred learning style. ICT should be an integrated part of our teaching. Speakers shared how the fact that people have access to mobiles encourages economic growth, financial awareness and learning. These are all factors that could help end poverty. We heard how, even in poor rural areas of Africa, technology was being used effectively in teaching and in connecting with the rest of the world. It was also shown how videos, podcasts and digital animation can be used in classroom activities by both teachers and learners. Various trends in Open Learning were discussed such as Massive Online Courses (MOOCs) and Open Educational Resources (OERs). Exciting developments where technology supports the growth of early literacy and a reading and writing culture were discussed. A lively discussion with leading international experts and participants was the best way to end off a very positive and brilliant conference. The theme of the debate was: “The house believes that sustainability is more important than innovation for education in Africa.” The result was inconclusive but led to better understanding of both sides’ arguments, thus enabling better co-operation. I conclude with this quote: “Teachers should never teach like yesterday and rob their students from tomorrow.” May St Paul’s College never be guilty of this!

Library report 2013 This year we covered different topics in the Media Centre. We started the new year on a high note when we exhibited all the new books that we purchased during 2012 - a splendid way to welcome newcomers to our school. More exhibitions followed. To celebrate St Valentine’s Day, books about relationships and the all-time winner, love stories, were displayed. An exhibition on Nelson Mandela’s 95th birthday was a highlight. This was followed by an exhibition of autobiographies and bibliographies of many leaders of the word who contributed to society

It is heart warming to see how many Primary School pupils, as well as Junior Secondary pupils make proper use of the library. There was a huge demand for both new fiction as well as nonfiction reading material. This led to the ‘disappearance’ of the research and reading sections in the MC. We trust that with the expansion and development of the school, provision will be made for a well-equipped library, which serves the needs of the whole school community. A heartfelt thank you goes out to each and every parent who generously contributed to the library fund. These donations enable the Media Centre to acquire new reading material that would otherwise not have been possible. Thank you for donating books (old and new), games, magazines and puzzles. With your continued contributions and support, we will be able to develop the Media Centre and to expand our collection of information material to benefit our readers. You are always welcome to visit me at the Media Centre. The Media Centre has also continued appreciation for the work done by Mrs Christa Fourie. She processes the new books, a service that she has been providing to the Media Centre for the past nine years.

Read-a-thon On Monday morning, 24 September 2013 the 8th Readathon was opened by our guest speaker, Andy Callesen, an English teacher at the High School. The theme for the Readathon was “Don’t kill the world” and this theme focused on how each individual can make a difference to protect our environment. It really was a privilege to listen to someone with such a heart for the environment. A different activity was planned for every day of the Readathon. On Monday and Tuesday we once again had Diskonto books at our school which gave the pupils the opportunity to purchase fiction and non-fiction books at discounted prices. A record amount of books were sold this year during the two day sale. Every day the pupils looked forward to the daily DEAR lessons. (Drop Everything And Read) The school bell rang to mark the beginning and end of this 15 minute time slot which took place at random times during the day. In this quarter of an hour, pupils as well as their teachers dropped everything and read. Pupils were also encouraged to read at home and fill in a form with the help of parents to indicate their time spent reading. They completed a “leaf” with information about the author, title, spine label and pages that they had read. Every day we stuck the leaves onto an old dead tree in the foyer of the MC. There was huge excitement and anticipation to see how our tree came to “life” day after day. On Tuesday the pupils had the opportunity to donate old books, dvd’s, posters and other such items to the school. Wednesday the students contributed a large amount of old clothing, shoes and tinned food for a needy school in Dordabis. On Thursday,
children placed coins/paper money inside a drawing of a rhino on the ground, in the quad. It was exciting to see how the drawing filled up with coins of the money that was collected. It will be used to make the MC more environmentally friendly with plants and a water pump for our water feature. The children used a unique idea to motivate others to read. Once a child had finished reading a library book, he or she did something special before returning the book to the library. The reader cut out a heart and wrote a little note on it. This was slipped in between the pages of the book so that the next reader would find a special little note in the book! The week ended on a high note with a dress-up parade! The children outdid themselves, displaying great talent and creativity. Seeing what the children recycled from rubbish was amazing. They created anything from robots to garden pots to clothing. With the help of committed teachers, each class enthusiastically presented an item in keeping with the green theme. Plays and poems abounded! Our parents were thoroughly entertained by our future “greenies”. The motto of our Media Centre is “Knowledge is Power.” Thank you to each and every pupil, parent and teacher who made a contribution to the success of Readathon 2013 and thank you once again for attending our 9th Readathon. I look forward to Readathon 2014.

Grade 3 Readathon visit to Dordabis Preschool On Thursday, 10 October, both Grade 3 classes, Mrs Hosking, Ms Roth and Mrs Koekemoer, set off to Dordabis. They delivered all the Readathon donations to the preschool there that had been started for the children of the squatter camp. Our children were amazed at the thoughtfulness and the beauty that was evident at the preschool. The little ones were rather shy but gave us lots of smiles and looks. Their teachers were fantastic, filled with enthusiasm. The founders of the school, Mr and Mrs Joubert, told us a bit about the children living conditions and what the school’s mission was. Many of our children were overheard saying how lucky and grateful they were for their homes and parents. To everyones delight chips, lollipops and cold drink were dished out. The highlight was listening to these little ones singing the National Anthem with such gusto and an even more energetic “tooth brushing” song! We responded with a song of our own. We then went to Mr and Mrs Joubert’s farm. This was a wonderful experience and we were made so welcome! The children
thoroughly enjoyed exploring the farm, from the two cheetahs to the young oryx. There were also goats, sheep, cows, geese and a hen with baby chickens. Fiona gave them an educational talk about camel thorn trees and the use of their seeds for cattle feed. About eight dogs kept us company throughout the time we were there. The children were entranced with the week-old foal that seemed very happy to be petted and fussed over. At last, we all flopped on the beautiful green grass and had our picnic surrounded by greenery. The children drank it all in and thoroughly enjoyed everything they saw, even though some of them held their noses when the “farm” smell was too much for them! After many thanks and a last round of saying goodbye, 47 exhilarated Grade 3's jumped into the buses and travelled safely back to school, thanks to Victor and Titus, our bus drivers. Well done Grade 3's and thank you so much, Mrs Koekemoer.

YWAP Every second Wednesday the New Song Family Church has the awesome opportunity to teach the St Paul’s Primary School children about God. Youth With A Purpose is a youth group run for the youth of Namibia. Children aged from 10 years to grade 7 gather every Friday from 6-8pm, at 28 Daan Bekker Street, while grades 7 to 12, meet at St George’s Diocesan College from 7-10pm. Everyone was created for a purpose and it is the goal of the New Song Family Church to help everyone discover God and the purpose for their lives. Every second Wednesday morning we have classes in which we teach children about the Love of God, about following him, and about making wise life decisions. We love the children of St Paul’s and it is always fun as we gather for some great games and teaching! The primary school
looks forward to their time with YWAP and we in turn look forward to spending time with them and imparting a greater understanding of God. The kids are awesome and of course there’s always something you can learn from them too. We pray for St Paul’s College, the children, staff, and parents, that we all would be filled with the joy of God and continue to seek Him and to know Him better.

Sport Archery Archery was introduced at St Paul’s early in March when the extra-mural program started. 12 eager archers started off, making string-bows and determining their dominant eye. Soon they were ready to shoot their first arrows! Seven archers participated in the National School’s Archery competition during the first weekend of June and impressed all the participants with their skill and excellent manners. The attendance numbers grew during the second term as a result of the earlier practice times. Many afternoons saw 20
archers practising – trying to improve their previous high scores or beating their friend’s high score. It was a great group to work with. Their skill and accuracy improved tremendously during the year. Their concentration and ability to focus also improved. Thank you to Glynnis Beukes-Kapa and Michael Whitelock for their patience and calm guidance and help during the practice sessions.
Athletics This year’s athletics kicked off with a very successful Interhouse competition with the Rudolph team triumphing once again. A special word of congratulations to Zuné Weber and Gian Dresselhaus, the Senior Victor Ludorums and Hannah Murphy and Lazarus Petrus, the Junior Victrix Ludorums.

Hockey Once again St Paul’s had an incredible season! This year the league was run by the NHU. We entered 18 teams in the league: 6 U8 teams (3 boys’ & 3 girls’), 6 U10 teams (3 boys’ & 3 girls’), 4 U12 teams (2 boys’ & 2 girls’) and 2 U14 teams (1 boys’ & 1 girls’). Once again, our hockey players amazed us with their skill, sportsmanship and determination. They always put all their effort into the practices and matches. The results for the season were: The u/10A boys and u/10A girls, U12A girls and U14 girls won their respective leagues. The U8A boys and girls and U14 boys came 2nd in their leagues. We are very proud of our B-teams who always played their best and showed good perseverance throughout the year. We are very proud of the good behaviour of our players and we are honoured to be at the top of the league in many age groups.
We would like to congratulate the following children on their special achievements: Jeani Holz, Zani van Lill, Kiana Cormack, Rachel Finch and Zuné Weber who were selected for the NSSU U14 girls team. Liam Hermanus and Dakota Hansen were selected for the NSSU U14 boys team. The NSSU teams played in an IPT tournament in George during July. Our boys and girls had an amazing trip and a wonderful hockey experience – competing against 20 South African provincial teams. Thank you to every coach, teacher and parent who is involved with hockey. Your input contributes to our success. During the annual Mini World Cup held by K5 Sport, St Paul’s represented Argentina. We had an awesome day, with our stage performance including a dancing Pope, Eva Peron, the men and women’s soccer team and a carnival of participants. Argentina had seven teams in the finals and won six of the eight age group categories at the popular development hockey tournament.

Physical Education Grade 1 PE Demonstration Lesson for Parents In order for parents to understand what is needed for a Grade 1 student to perform optimally, we arranged a day where they could see how the PE development programme works at St Paul’s College and why we do PE so intensively. PE has most definitely evolved since they were in Grade 1. A few stations were set out and the two classes were divided into groups and rotated until everyone had had a turn at the various activities. The activities highlighted a variety of skills that are practised in a typical lesson. Parents were able to see how much fun a PE lesson can be.
Without constant movement, children develop delays; they are not able to sit for long periods, they are not able to listen or respond effectively, they struggle to organize themselves and find it difficult to work with direction and shapes. All these have an impact on learning to read, write and do Mathematics. Lack of movement inhibits their imagination and self confidence. That is why they get bored and frustrated so easily. The lack of physical development has a huge and negative effect on school work.
Eric Burger
It is alarmingly obvious that the physical abilities of modern children deteriorate each year. It is important for a Grade 1 student to be able to handle a full morning of sitting, playing, listening and responding to all the daily demands. They need to be physically fit to do this. Therefore, it cannot be emphasised enough that children must crawl, walk, climb and run as much as they can when they are little. It would be wonderful if parents realised this when babies were born. Parents would then stop doing everything for their children, let them walk and not be carried, let them run, let them climb, let them carry their own bags and toys and pack things away themselves. Movement memory forms the basis of intellectual memory.
Failure and success teach self confidence, motivation and never ever to give up.
By running within a structured environment, they develop more than just muscles.
The structured environment is ideal to teach them discipline.
As they throw a ball, clap and catch, they learn problem solving skills, timing and courage.
By jumping, concentration develops and movement and emotions are controlled.
By changing direction while running, they learn agility and quick decision making.

Swimming The opportunity our grade 1 and 2 learners have to do swimming as part of the P.E program is starting to show results. More inexperienced swimmers had the courage to participate in the Inter House Gala, in October. Congratulations to Milah Malan and Krynauw Weber who were the Junior Victrix and Victor Ludorums, as well as to Zuné Weber and Dakota Hansen who received the Senior Victrix and Victor Ludorums. St Paul’s participated in the Pupkewitz Gala in November. 33 swimmers from St Paul’s Primary school entered and we came 2nd in this event. Congratulations to the following swimmers for their achievements: Milah Malan - 1st freestyle, backstroke, butterfly (U8) Pascale Pimenta - 3rd backstroke and butterfly (U8) Janice Kennedy - 3rd breaststroke (U8) Alice Young - 3rd freestyle (U8) Antoine Segura - 3rd backstroke (U8) Anneke Eisenberg - 3rd breaststroke and backstroke (U10) Krynauw Weber - 1st in backstroke, butterfly, breaststroke, 2nd freestyle (U10)
Mikah Burger - 1st freestyle, 2nd breaststroke, butterfly (U10) Charl Malan - 3rd backstroke (U10) Zuné Weber - 1st freestyle, backstroke and breaststroke, 2nd butterfly (U12) The under U8 girls and U10 boys’ relay teams came first, the U8 boys and U10 girls came second and the U14 girls came third. We are extremely proud of all the participants for their good behaviour and their positive attitude. Two of the Primary School’s students, Zuné and Krynauw Weber, qualified for the Namibian team in Biathle and Triathle. Both students participated in the World Biathle and Triathle Championship in Cypress during October. Krynauw came first in his age group in the Triathle Championship and Zuné came third. It was a great experience for them.

Tennis This year was characterized by “up and coming” talent in the U10 age group. The under 10 group made up three-quarters of the tennis group, which consisted of about 22 players. Seeing that the U12 and U14 group was so much smaller, it was decided that Miss Stainton and her U10 group would join the U12 and U14 at the Eros tennis courts on a Thursday. They also joined the older ones at Johan Theron’s Tennis School at SKW on Tuesdays. At Johan’s Tennis School the tennis players were divided into three groups to be coached by different coaches. This was to each and every player’s advantage and they made amazing progress throughout the year. On Thursdays, Mrs. Le Roux and Miss Stainton developed and consolidated these skills. In the first term, a friendly tournament was played against Windhoek Afrikaanse Privaatskool. This was for the U10, U12 and U14 players. They had a choice between playing full court
or midi court, as some of them were not yet ready to attempt playing full court. There was another tournament for the U10 to U14 group in the second term. We invited St. George’s Primary School to the Eros courts and it was a very enjoyable afternoon. Later in the term, on 19th July, a Mini Tennis Tournament was organized for the Grade 2 pupils of St Paul’s College. We invited the Grade 2 tennis players from Windhoek Afrikaanse Privaatskool. The little ones coped well with playing matches and enjoyed the challenge of playing against each other, putting into practice what they have been taught in their tennis lessons with Johan Theron’s coaches. A third tournament took place on 4 October in the third term. Again St George’s Primary School met with us at Eros Primary School courts. Our players did very well and took first, second and third places in the full court and midi court events.

On 1 November the Grade 1 and 2 tennis players had a “St Paul’s only” mini tennis tournament. The Grade 1's competed against each other and the Grade 2's against each other. The Grade 1's initially struggled, but quickly got into it and played very nicely. They thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon, sunburnt, but happy! The quality of their skills shows that tennis in Grade 1 and 2 at Johan’s Tennis School is an asset to our school.
Tennis at St Paul’s College is not noticed as much as some of the other sports, but it definitely has its place and is thoroughly enjoyed by those who participate.
