The Head of Primary says... 2020, a year of so much promise, new beginnings and so many plans - until 14 March. Then, we were reeling in shock to the stringent lockdown, curfews, sanitising, masks, altered plans and the unknowns of Covid-19.

"SOMETIMES our lives have to be completely shaken up, changed, and rearranged to relocate us to the place we are meant to be"

All this in a year where we planned for changes that would alter the face of the Primary School from 2021. No longer would we have Grade 7. Our Gr 6s would leave and move to the High School for Grade 7, and this would make way for our very first Gr R scholars. For the most part, school was a soulless place - no happy laughter of children and few members of staff while all were grappling with Google Classroom and online meetings in the isolation of their homes. The only sounds were of machinery labouring away, as the build to accommodate the changes took place. I am so proud of the St. Paul's team of teachers, coaches and parents. Despite what was meant to destroy, as a team, we overcame the last minute changes, confronted our fears, exited our comfort zones and created opportunities for our precious children to continue learning, being creative and playing sport. A change to what was comfortable spun us into a vortex that challenged us to the core. As we picked ourselves up and clung to our faith, we learnt so much. We made memories with our families, made do with less, learnt many 21st Century skills, conducted business and educated differently, but most importantly, prioritised what was of value in our lives. We hope that 2021, with the valuable lessons learnt from this year, will allow us to engage in a more meaningful way and that we can teach full classes, as well as meet the needs of each child on a personal level. In Loving Memory of

Dear MRS RALL friend and teacher

Many of our high school students who attended primary school here at St Paul's would have known Mrs Rall. If she was not your class teacher in Grade 5, then the chances are good that she coached you hockey or was a part of your school life in some way or other. I will remember Mrs Rall as one of those people who was vibrant, energetic and goal driven. An example of her being goal driven and determined was when she made very sure that her students understood verb tenses! Whenever I walked into her classroom I felt a positive vibe and the students were happily at work. Mrs Rall came across as very strict and serious in the beginning but the more time you spent with her and got to know her better, one realised that she was a deeply kind and loving person. The well-being of her students was at the forefront of her heart. She was a brutally honest person and had a mind of her own, as I am sure you all know, and it is these qualities that we grew to love in her. She was dependable and it was comfortable knowing that she had your back when you needed her. There are many students who will be able to attest to the fact that Mrs Rall went the extra mile for her students. When I think back over the times we spent together, she had an awesome sense of humour and privately she was mischievous, this made her all the more fun to be around. To me she was a very real and solid person and I am going to miss not being able to chat to her or see her around the school campus and I am sure that many of you are feeling the same way, especially in the light that she died so suddenly and unexpectedly. How do we cope with the loss of someone who means a lot to us? Unfortunately, there is no recipe for dealing with grief, it is an individual journey that each of us has to take until we get to the point where we can live with the loss of the dear person. The loss of a person that we love is not something that we get over, it is something we learn to live with and over time the pain becomes more bearable.

7

I hear people say that they wish they had done this or that with the person who has died and very often they carry guilt because they think they should have spent more time with the person or have done more things. But when someone is important to you no matter how much time you spend or no matter how much you do with that person, it will never be enough. So we learn that we must treasure life and live it to the fullest. Take every opportunity and be positive about life and enjoy the friendships that we have and make a difference in someone else's life. Listen to each other, laugh and be kind. Thank God for every day you are given. Today, I am thinking about how dear Mrs Rall was and I am sad. I will not move on from my memories of her, rather I embrace them and keep them close to my heart and by doing this I will keep her memory alive. We send condolences and love to her family. If anyone wants to talk about Mrs Rall, I am here. Lots of love Mrs Luyt St Paul s College Counsellor The Estate team and I are deeply saddened by the passing of our Dear Mrs Rall. We hereby wish to convey our sincerest condolences. We have fond memories of organisation and team work when it comes to Mrs Rall. We were all very, very fond of Mrs Rall. To us, the legacy she leaves behind is one of work, positivity and caring. Her old-school approach to tackle obstacles coming with the yearly Etosha trips was admirable and welcome. Her light will continue to shine in our hearts and memories. We pray for strength for you, her immediate colleagues and wish you calmness, knowing she added value in every sense of the word. She will be missed. Sincerely Romondo and Estate team

Grade 6 messages Thank you for being one the best teachersI have ever had. Mrs Rall would always make me laugh and when she explained things, she explained in a way I would always understand.

Jasmine Cartwright Mrs Rall was a great teacher, she was strict in a funny way. Whenever she caught you talking, she would walk up with hands on hips and say, “James, what are you doing?” in this way, as though she was trying to let you on a secret or something. She was a great teacher.

James Reah Thank you for all that you have done for me and my school mates. Thank you for being the teacher that's always been there for us when we need help. May your children be blessed the Lord and may you have time to rest.

Victor Manamike She loved me like I was her own family.

Ashlynn Abrahams I think we can agree that she was one of the best teachers ever.

Colin Eins She was such a great teacher.

Grade 6 messages Thank you Mrs Rall, you have been a great teacher for all of us and you have been there from the beginning. Now it is our turn to Thank you. May you rest in peace.

It is sad that Mrs Rall is no longer with us. She took us to Etosha and we had loads of fun and learnt a lot too. We shouldn't let this damage us and we should smile because we got to meet her and that she is hopefully now with the Lord Jesus Christ.

She always pushed everyone really hard because she always saw people's fullest potential in everyone and I'm really grateful for that.

My deepest condolences to the family of Mr Rall. It saddens me to hear we've lost a beautiful soul, a person who was devoted to her job, a fun-loving, but humorous teacher. It's hard to handle this loss and I mourn with those close to her. May her soul rest in peace.

messages from parents I'm so very sad to hear about Elna. Loved her dearly and am only left with very fond memories Much love

Shayne Cormack It is with great sadness that I write this, and I can just imagine the mournful mood in the school and staffroom today. It is one of the hardest moments to lose a beloved colleague and teacher - particularly in a school that subscribes so much to the human factor - and to lead a staff through this traumatic experience. I knew and remember Elna as a person with strong convictions, a strong belief, tradition, a steadfastness and so much kindness, all this layered with a subtle humour. I remember doing a class visit in her class – the topic was giraffes – and I loved the presentation; her commitment to the subject and her own love for the environment was so evident. The children have definitely taken away some lessons from that day, and if not, some funny drawings. Even in Elna's darkest hours she “stood tall” and believed. I know that Elna has left a positive mark on every child she taught and left a lasting legacy with pupils, colleagues and friends and the school. It is not easy to lead the staff with one of them torn away so abruptly, and I wish you much strength and guidance from a loving God to fill the emptiness. I am thinking of you all. Much love

Ellen It is with immense sadness that I heard about Elna's passing. Words cannot express our grief. Please know that we have fond memories...like being called to school on the first day of Gr 5 when Shana refused to even enter the classroom for fear of the legendary Mrs Rall...the piano and guitar accompaniment at

Assemblies. Elna go in peace...you will be remembered with fondness. Much love Wendy, Shana and Tamzyn My sincerest and most heartfelt condolences to you and all the teachers and securities at the primary school with the passing of Mrs Rall. I can't imagine not seeing her at our PPSG meetings , busy knitting away. She was such a beautiful person with the kindest, sweetest heart ever. She taught Reagan many , many years ago and Ashlynn was quite petrified to have her as a teacher. Of course Reagan was a naughty boy and Mrs Rall probably had to be strict with him. We soon realized that she needn't have worried since Mrs Rall was such a caring and loving teacher. I got to know her quite well last year being one of the class representatives for Grade 5. I remember the last time I saw her was at our last PPSG meeting earlier this year. I greeted her as usual, but this time she gave me a warm hug. That's my last memory of her. Ashlynn grew very fond of Mrs Rall and being the shy , introvert that she was, Mrs Rall gave her some very encouraging words at the end of last year. She also motivated her tremendously when she wanted to quit hockey. Even Lauren in Grade 4 only has fond memories of Mrs Rall always coming to their Grade 3 class last year to talk to Anni and making jokes with the kids. My kids and I Immediately Went into prayer when we got the news last week Saturday that she was in hospital. They prayed throughout the weekend and were devastated on Monday morning . However, we trust in God's timing and will. I can't imagine what it must be like for you and having to keep everyone positive. My prayers are that you and your staff will find comfort in His arms and that God will bless you all with his peace and understanding. I couldn't contain myself when I watched her funeral online. I cried as if I'd lost a parent. I just realized what a wonderful person she was and what big voids has been left . Wishing you a blessed day.

Sonette We are all devastated by the terrible news about Mrs Rall. We are thinking of her and her family and took time yesterday to talk about so many fond memories our children have of her. She has had such a strong impact on their lives and Molly wrote a letter to her only last week as her German assignment telling her that she was her favourite teacher so far!

We have heard about the sad news. I have worked with "tannie Rall'' for many years on the hockey field. She was such a joy to work with and always kind. I know this will be a massive loss for you and your school. I am from Pionierspark Primary School, and we as a school want to give our condolences to your staff and "tannie Rall's" family. We pray especially for the children and the loss that they will have.

Jeanette Coetzee We were deeply saddened to hear of the loss of Mrs. Rall! Whenever I think of her, I think of her cracking jokes and knitting away in the PPSG meetings! She was so full of life and zest and always seemed to get the job done! She seemed so scary and strict, but everyone who came out of her class only had the most amazing things to say!! We are thinking of you all and praying for you and the rest of her family as you all deal with this loss. It must be so devastating for you all. You are in our hearts and prayers! Much love,

The Zehrt family

Kl 6 Gedichte

Dandago

Mein Tier Mein Tier trinkt Bier.

James Wörterbuch Was machen wir heute?

Sport Archery ARCHERY REPORT Despite Covid-19 hitting the country, it has been a very successful year. There were 27 archers who signed up for archery in February (19 Prim. Sch. & 8 High Sch.), as well as a new coach, Mr. Engelbrecht. Apart from the complete lockdown from middle March to May, we practised every Tuesday and Thursday until the end of October. Unfortunately there were only 5 competitions allowed as the other competitions would have been during lockdown times. Our archers did exceptionally well at these competitions with Damian Beukes, Kyra Nghishekwa, Lara van Rensburg, Emilia Shipiki, Jasmine Rennie and Luke Estrela receiving numerous medals. We are extremely proud of Damian Beukes who were selected for the Namibian NASP Team and Kyra Nghishekwa who were selected for the Namibian NASP Development Team. They were to participate in the NASP Africa Championships, but it was cancelled due to Covid-19. Damian, however, participated in the first ever virtual NASP Africa Championships. At the National NASP competition the St. Paul's archers excelled and received the following medals and awards: Damian Beukes – silver for Bull's-Eye, silver Overall (senior boys) Kyra Nghishekwa – bronze for Bull's-Eye, silver for 3D animals, silver Overall (senior girls) Emilia Shipiki – silver for Bull's-Eye, bonze for 3D animals, bronze Overall (junior girls) Junior Team Award – bronze medal (Emilia Shipiki, Jasmine Rennie, Sanne Dewulf, Mark Saad) Top Schools Award (junior and senior combined) – St. Paul's College: third in the country.

At the end of the year we have 2 archers in the top 32 National Ranking and 5 archers ranked in the top 50. Most archers attend practises regularly, but the following children have been outstanding in attendance – for both practises and competitions: Primary School: Stephanie Shepherd, Luke Estrela, Richard-John Beukes, James Reah, Jasmine Rennie and Mark Saad. High School: Damian Beukes, Erica Nande and Robbe Dewulf. As always, it is a huge pleasure to coach and work with our archers. Their behaviour and performance at competitions are always impressive. Their skill and accuracy, especially of the beginners, have improved tremendously during the year. We would like to thank Mrs. Dewulf for her consistent coaching, support and help, both at practices and at competitions. We really appreciate the patience and dedication she shows towards the children and the sport. The Junior Archer of the Year: Lara van Rensburg The Senior Archer of the Year: Damian Beukes Suzánne Jacobs BAI

Our swimmers competed against swimmers from 14 Cana affiliated countries namely; Angola, Botswana, Comoros, Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia,

Seychelles, South Africa, Swaziland, Zambia & Zimbabwe. To compete in this championship, all our swimmers needed to achieve qualifying times. In preparation, swimmers put in long hours of hard work, focus and dedication. The team will be accompanied by JeanMichael Leitner (Coach) and Theresa Westerduin (Team Manager) Majority of these championships are self funded, making it extremely expensive and difficult for our swimmers to attend. NASU would like to thank SANLAM for their donation and Theresa Westerduin (Team Manager) for all her hard work in ensuring that all documentation and travel needs were met. St Paul's and NASU are incredibly proud of them.
