The Head of Primary says...

2017

2017 was a year of growth and improved academic systems, and on the flip side, there were challenges that we and our families have never faced before. Through all this, we, as staff, never took our focus off God and searched His Word for answers. We were reminded to persevere, keep our heads up high and be still, knowing that no storm is too difficult for Him to calm. We have spent much time constantly reminding those of our scholars who have learning difficulties that they can face their challenges in life. The dream of St Paul’s having a Learner Support position was finally realised at the start of 2017. The fruit of Mrs van Rooyen’s work is evident. Success begins with believing in oneself and rebuilding self-esteem. When we choose to make a point of building up our partners, our friends, our friend's children and our own children, by using encouraging words instead of belittling and judging, there will be fewer instances of emotional and mental illness and our children will be in a position to make a difference in the world.

“Don't

become preoccupied with your child's academic or sporting and cultural ability, but instead teach them to sit with those sitting alone. Teach them to be kind. Teach them to offer their help. Teach them to be a friend to the lonely. Teach them to encourage others. Teach them to think about other people. Teach them to share. Teach them to look. This is how they will change the world.” Unknown For parents and teachers to teach these principles, we need to forgive ourselves, love our God, accept and truly love one another. “Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails…” 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 I wish all our families a year of positive thoughts, words and actions.

Lesley Saunders Head of Primary

St Paul's bids farewell to (left to right) Ms A. Roth, Ms C. Fortsch and Ms H. Espag, and thanks them for their wonderful service to the school and to their students. We wish them well in all they do.

Tobias Hanyeko Primary Project School It is good they have food. And it is good that there’s a lady that makes porridge for them. That’s so good. They have a tuckshop to biy sweets. They have good school clothes and ad least they have food and mothers and fathers. They laghed at us and touched us. They have good classrooms. And they want to call their school Green leaves or Perazim. I want it to be called Green Leaves.

Abigail Mutua

It is a good school. Its name is Greenleaves or Perazim. Their classrooms are in tents. They rite neat. And read books in the classroom. They eat porridge and they have a little tuckshop. They are well-behaved and quiet and greeted. They have a greenhouse and play about. McLachlan Nel

Their classrooms are tents. Their school name is called Green leaves. Their muthers cooked porridge for love. They were cooking the porridge on fire. There was a tucshop out of the school. There was a greenhouse there by the school. They sang us a song. Some of them hugged, fist bumped and high-fived us. Some of them had school clothes. All of them were very happy. All their books were very neat. They were all qiet (quiet).

Luke Estrela

The school is poor. They write neat. They want to call the school Greenleaves or Perazim. They only eat once a day. One sweet is 1 dollar. Tiago Pereira

I loved them becos they were quiet! I find them clever becos there is a bed in the classroom for when pepel are sick. When I was there they gave us high-fives and they felt aower (our) hands. Becos we have creem and they do not so when we fundraise I will give them creem.

I liked it because they greeted us very well. They sang a song to us. (That was cool.) We also sang a song back to them. They also were very quiet and well-behaved. Their classroom was a tent. They looked very, very happy. One of them shared with a baby that was there too!!! The principal told us that they are using the greenhouse to teach them how to grow vegetables. They had pap which is cool. Tamsin Geyve

Olive Burger

At this school they are happy, nice and well-behaved. One class sang a song to us. It was very good. They might be a little poor but they are beautiful inside. And that makes that school very very very nice. Russel Fick

I think they have beautiful hearts. They had wundfel righting (wonderful writing). I like that they had tents. When they call their school Greenleaves I like the sownd of that. They share their food and their hearts are like rembose (rainbows). When I see them in the uy (eye) I see a rembow. I love them. I think I wish you and everybody has a brut fyoocher (bright future) ahead of you. I love that they are quyet (quiet). Kiara Estrela

43

What was good is that they sang a song for us. They gave us high fives. What was bad is that they had to learn in a tent. That every day at their school they have to eat porridge.

Nissi Hiveluah

The school is very kind. They greeted me and I greeted them. I made friends with them. I gave one of them a high-five. They only had cents to buy sweets. They had school clothes like us. Their handwriting was neat

Erin Pickering

In the school some classes were in tents. The high school is starting to make vetchtbels (vegetables). They were quiet, neat and well-behaved. They were very very kind. They have very nice hearts. They even sang a song to us and we also sang a song. We gave them hugs and hive-fives. And I made two friends. The first one’s name was Aqiasha and the 2nd one was Daisy. They did not have whiteboards. They do not have chair bags. Some of them don’t even have friends. One of the girls did not have lunch so one boy shared with her. Zharah Rukoro

Science Fun Day

Keira made slime and she made it with borax, water and glue ant that is how Keira made slime. Erin did a volcano. She had a bottle with baceing powder. Then she put sope inside but ... it did not work out. Nissi’s experiment was about air. She got a bottle and she put some baceing powder in and added viniger. Then she put the balloon on the bottle. The balloon puft up. Matthias Rennie

I did the balloon blow up. I took vinegar. I put the vinegar in the botel. Then I took bicarbonate of soda and I mixed them together. They make carbon dioxide – it is a gas and that’s what we exhale. Abigail did dancing popcorn. She yoused vinegar and water and baking soda and corn. She mixed them together. Then the corn jumped up and went down. Naomi had a floating egg. She yoused normal water and salt water and then she put the egg in the normal water and it went down. When she put it in salt water, it was floating. I had fun. Nissi Hiveluah

My experiment was a lava lamp. If you want to do a lava lamp you need an empty bottle and oil, water, tablet and food colouring. First pour the water, then the oil. Pour the food colouring for the food colouring to go into the water. Then put the tablet inside and then the lava lamp will start to fizz and you have made a lava lamp. McLachlan Nel

Stories A bird story

Once upon a time there was a bird. The bird’s name was Zharah. She collected a lot of hay. Then one day she decided to make a nest. After that she laid an egg. The egg was beautiful and shiny. She looked at the egg. She waited for the egg to break but it didn’t hatch at all. Then she went to get something. While she was away the egg started to hatch. When she came back she heard something talk from her nest. She went to look. Then, when she looked at it, she got a fright. She got a name for him. His name was Alex. She came around the corner. Alex said, “Momy, I am so glad you are back with a juicy work”. Then Zharah said to her baby, “You must wait because I am going to get lots of juicy worms.” Then he sat quietly. Later he got tired of waiting. Then he saw other birds in the sky. He decided to also fly. When his mother came back, his mother went looking for him. Then his mother flew up into the sky to find him. When his mother saw him on the ground. His mother asked a lot of quitesions. Then his mother took him to the nest and gave him the juicy worms she promised. Quadira Januarie

A bird story

One day there was a bird who built a nest. She got stiks, grass and leafs. The she was proud of herself. She flew away to get some juicy warmes. The bird found some more warmes. Then she herd something. “Mammy, Mammy” said the chick. She was so happy. Mammy gave the chick warmes. The chick sat quietly. Then the chick grew so big – it was bigger than his mam. He flew away from the nest and had a new life. Matthias Rennie

A bird story

Once upon a time there was a beouteful bird. The bird laid an egg in her nest. The egg cracket and the little bird hatched. The bird flew to find food for the baby bird. “Jullo, Mommy, you are back, said the little bird. She was proud of her baby. Tiago Pereira

The big journey One day the ash seed fell into the stream. It saw a tent, a table, a duck and a waterfall and fell down. Then it started to spiral down, down onto the ground!! So the next day it started to rain and the sand started to get soft and the seed went down into the ground. Six months later it was a beatifol ash tree.

Olive Burger

The big journey (based on discussions on dispersal of seeds) Once upon a time there was a seed that was floting on the water. It exploded and the seeds came out. It was relaxing. When it was relaxing on the water, it was fish, rocs and weeds. It ended between the reeds and when the first and second and third rain comae, it was growing and growing and growing. It had flower, leaves and seeds. It got bigger and then it was a tree.

Luke Estrela

The big journey One rainy day a seed fell off a tree. There was lots and lots of water. Then the seed floated and drifted on the water until it went onto the shore. It got undergrownd and it grew. It became such a big tree, bigger than all the trees there. The seed of the tree was very, very small. And something that small could grow to something that big.

Grade 2B Stories The Bird

Once there was a mother bird. Her name was Judy. Judy waited patiently for her egg to hatch. She waited and waited and waited. And finally the egg hatched. The miracle of life happened. He name was Jewel. She was the most precious chick ever. Her chirps were so light. After she hatched she was hungry. So Judy went off. She went to get her a worm. While Judy was gone Jewel just sat. She was so still that other birds were surprised. But Jewel was bored. Judy was busy finding worms. It was so hard. But luckily she found one. Judy came back to Jewel. Jewel snapped the worm and ate it. She was stuffed. Jewel went to sleep. Stephanie Shepard

The Seed Once upon a time there was this seed. The seed was very tiny. One day the seed was lying in the grass when this weird bird ate the seed and the bird took him to another place. The bird then pooped the seed out and the said said, ‘Yukky!’ The seed went to take a shower in the rain. He grew into a flower.

Cecil Pickering

Birds Once upon a time a mother bird made a nest. She had eggs. She went to find food and her baby egg hatched. The mother came to feed the babies.

Virinao Pack A story of a seed When I was on the tree it was a good life. All of a sudden I went flying off my tree. It was sad. I was crying. The wind took me to a beautiful meadow and I knew this was the place to go, but let me not spoil this too much. Let’s go on and I was taken by a bird but thank goodness she did not like the taste of me. So she dropped me in the same spot in the meadow. I heard thunder and it started to rain.

Hamish Philip The Happy Seed

The Rose

Once upon a time I was about to make tea when I heard a whoosh. I wondered what it was and I saw all my friend seeds. They were floating away. I started to cry when I got whooshed away. I was happy I was heading in the same way as my friends. Soon we landed in a river. We all shouted, ‘Yippeeee, we are at the water park!’ Soon the wind made us fly. Then we landed in the rose orchard. It started to rain and we all grew into a rose bush. Tuli Nott

Don’t ever trust a snake, Little Seed Hello, I’m a little seed. Its night and I’m getting ready for bed. I had my dinner so now it’s time for bed. Wait! What made me happy is was to sing for them. I liked it on the bus. It was fun that it was a long path. I was so excited to go to the trip.

What made me happy was that the green house was nice. And the tent was dark and the school was nice. Cecil Pickering

On Friday the 4th of August class 2B went to Tobias Hainyeko. It was a wonderful experience. We learnt that the children have one meal per day and they have one toilet. The toilet is not their toilet. It is the next door schools toilet. I loved going there. Amelia Roe

The school was very poor but the children seemed happy so that’s good. I liked it there. It was a good experience for me but now I’m starting to see how lucky I am. You, me, everybody (except the poor) are really lucky. At the school the children only got one meal a day. We got to watch them have that then we got to play with them. It was a lucky day. Madeleine Finucane

On Friday 2B went to Tobias Hainyeko and we experienced a lot of stuff that we never learnt. We met new friends. They were very nice to us. They work in tents and in the dark. They share one toilet. They eat one meal a day. They eat mainly porridge for food. Richard-John Beukes

Me and my friends went to a school named Tobias Hainyeko. I love experiencing how nice the school is. It is very nice to go there. They only have one meal a day. I had lots of fun on the bus with my friends and at the school. The children there are very nice and kind. My mom did not come with because she was in Rundu. And I like it there. It is nice. I was very shy. I met a girl. We went to the class. It was a tent. Then we went back to school, I fell asleep in the bus. And we got to eat, I was very sleepy. And that is it. The end.

Susana De Jesus

They only have one toilet. They have tents and it is dark. They also have a green house. They also want to call themselves Green Leaves. Jaden Joseph

I love the poor especially the cute babies. The school learnt me that I should be thankful for what I have. The principal has a smart way of growing crops. He recycles the coal through water so it can grow faster. The classes are made out of either brick or a tent. It was very dark in the tents. Their work is very neat. Philip van Rensburg

The thing that I liked most is that the children are so kind. They are thinking of changing the name of the school to Green Leaves. They only get one meal a day. It is porridge or they get money for the tuckshop. Some of their classrooms are in tents. They got amazing handwriting.

Very nice school. You make me feel lucky. It is a great idea to give them porridge. Everybody is super kind. Thank you for everything. Stephanie Shepard

Me and my friends went to a school. I was shy. At the start it was boring then it got fun at the end. It was very hot. When we got back to school it was fun. I am afraid that is the end of my story.

Hello. My name is Shona and I am going to tell you about the other names. It is Green Leaves and Perisam and it is sad. Because there is only one toilet. Some of the classes are tents. What we heard is he is going to teach them how to grow food. They are friendly to us. Shona Matswetu

It is very poor but interesting and their school is very pretty and huge! They only have one meal a day and that is porridge. They have only one toilet. This is interesting, they are 860 people schooling there. WOW! They even sang a song to us and we sang too. I am so happy they are safe. Inotila Kafidi

I felt sad for them. I wish the whole world would help them. They only have one bathroom. Some of their class rooms were tents and some were like ours but smaller. They only have one meal a day. They have a green house. I think they need more than that. I wish they had a roof over their head. I wish they had 3 meals a day from now on! Tuli Nott

Tobias Hainyeko was a very poor school. It made me very sad. The principal showed us around. In one of the classes they sang a lovely song to us. We loved the school. It was really fun. We left at their break. I was really tired when we came back. Jessica Bombosch

At their break they eat porridge. They all share a toilet between them. They go to school in a tent. They read in the tent. They do lots of things in school like we do. If they are sick they lie on the bed. Maya Van Dyk

It was very nice and fun. The teacher show us the way and they class was fun. The parents came also and they had fun too. We went back and ate and played. Gerrard Shilongo

Tobias Hainyeko Project School is a wonderful school. It was an experiencing trip and I enjoyed it. It was like no trip I have ever been on and it was fun because I got to meet new people. It was still fun even though I did not get to play with them, it was still fun. Sibusiso Zungu

Water is good for you After dinner first drink water The world needs lots of water Evaporation causes water to evaporate Rain helps the plants grow. Mpho Nghifikepunye

Water is very important. At our school we have water. The ocean is covering the world. Every day I bath with water Rivers go to the oceans. Victor Manamike

Water is fun to play in. At bath time we try save water Try to listen to the water cycle song, its fun! Evaporation is cool. Reuse water. Cara Haumann

Water is good for your body Always drink water every day The world uses lots of water Every morning drink water Rivers have water Melania Dassala

Saving Water Shower with very little water because there is a drought in Namibia and we must save as much water as we can. We don’t have to use lots of water at all. So save water please so our country can be saved. Use your water wisely. Like for instance use a bucket to gather up water and give it to your plants. When you brush your teeth turn off the tap. Bailey Loubser

Water is precious in Nambia A puddle is water that will evaporate. The water cycle has 3 different parts: evaporation, condensation and precipitation. Evaporation is the first part of the water cycle. Recently it has rained in Namibia. Alex Marggraff

Water is a very important part of life. Animals need water to survive There are times when there is no water Even the plants need water Recycling water is a good thing to do Isabella Spath

Saving Water In Windhoek there is not a lot of water so we need to save water. Reuse water by putting a bucket under a tap when you wash your hands. Take a shower instead of a bath. When you wash your car use a bucket.

Niels Knoetze

Saving Water

In Namibia it is very dry so we really have to try save water. If we want to wash our car you must not use a hosepipe. What must you use? You must use a bucket and a sponge. If you want to bath use less water. If you want your garden to grow then you should get plants that can last without water for a long time. When you brush your teeth use a cup. When you wash your clothes only wash your clothes when you have a lot of washing to do.

Grade 4A went to Namib Mills Bakery Imagine you can go to everywhere in the world in under one day. That was the feeling I got while visiting Namib Mills Bakery. Our class had got four options for us to bake, pizzas, biscuits, sausage rolls and muffins. I thought we were going to make biscuits, because it is the easiest to make, but instead we made pizza. Amazing! We met the baker, called Mr. Rodger I do not know if he is an actual chef, but I care very little about this matter. We used different ingredients to make pizza and it was delicious. I would love to go there again.

Mathew Varghese

On the 10th of October 2017 we visited Namib Mills Bakery, which is situated near Feed Master, about 10km out of Windhoek. When we arrived there, we were divided into groups of three. We were tasked with baking pizzas and I was tasked with cutting the sausage, ham and tomatoes. Then after that, I put some tomato paste on my dough. We were accompanied by Mrs. Karin, one of my classmates’ mother. Our head chef was Rodger, who worked at Namib Mills and he guided us through our tasks. We put our pizzas in the over for 15minutes and took them out when it was baked. The highlight of this experience was sharing my pizza with my friends. This experience was exceptional.

Ruata Kaumbi

75

While one of our on-duty mommies, Karin drove us to Namib Mills, Sanne, Erin, Benjamin, Nyashia and I sang song in the car. When we finally reached our destination, we saw that Simone’s group had already arrived. We waited for the last group. A gentleman, called Rodger, let us outside through can open gate and int a building that was actually a kitchen. We were split into groups of four and I was with Erin, Imani and Lorenzo. As we followed his instructions and made our dough, we added icing sugar to make some condensmilk biscuits. My partners kept on eating the dough! We made about twentyeight cookies on one tray. We still made more cookies and that meant more eating. We all arrived back at school with a box filled with cookies. Sara De Jesus

Grade 5A Educational Trip to Etosha Village

On Monday, 05 June 2017, Gr. 5A departed to Etosha Village. For a few children it was the first time away from home, but as soon as we arrived, the fun started and the nervousness disappeared. Uncles Hein and Chris made sure that there was never a dull moment. The game drive in Etosha National Park was exciting. Elephants, rhinos and zebras provided excellent photographs. Sleeping in tents was also part of the great adventure. After a braai on the first night, everybody settled in for a good night’s rest. Early the following morning we started with a wonderful sunrise and lessons about the veld. Making fire in primitive ways was educational and a challenge to each group. The King of fire-making was Zander Schmidt. The obstacle course taught the children to work together as a group and it was amazing to see how they actually succeeded. Different knot-tying followed after the obstacle course. After a very full programme, there was time to relax in the pool and to have a final practice for the campfire concert. The highlight of the trip was the Bush Master Chef competition. The two groups competed for the best “potjie” and the winning captain won a weekend for his/her family at Etosha Village. Congratulations to Charlie Lohman for winning this fantastic prize. The campfire concert was the last event on the second day. The trip ended off with a knot-tying competition and a demonstration of how to make a very strong rope out of toilet paper. After prize giving, we said farewell and drove back to Windhoek. We are also very thankful for a dedicated bus driver. Thank you Victor! You are the best. We thank and praise our heavenly Father for a safe trip.

Grade 5 Parent Social Event On Saturday, 03 June 2017, the Gr 5 parents had a fun picnic come-together. The tables were laid and fairy lights were an added touch to the dĂŠcor. The parents enthusiastically participated in sack, egg and wheelbarrow races with their children. The scholars enjoyed eating doughnuts hanging from a line and knocking bottles down with a tennis ball in a sock. The picnic fires burnt high and everybody enjoyed a relaxing afternoon and evening. A big thank you to the Grade 5 parents. It is great to have you on-board the Gr. 5 team.

Grade 5B's Trip to Etosha Village My experience of the Grade 5B trip... At Etosha, my experience was making knots with ropes. I also enjoyed making potjiekos and my group winning. I loved the campfire concert, it was loads of fun. I had a blast at the obstacle course. Emma Landman The bus trip was 6 hours long. When I went inside my tent it was boiling hot. I thought I was going to die. After that we went hiking and it was awesome. The next day we did obstacle courses and my team broke the record. The previous record was 20 minutes and my team was 17 minutes. We also learned how to make fire out of metal and stone which was fantastic. On Wednesday, we woke up, ate breakfast and learned how to make a rope out of toilet paper, then we came back to school.

Maria Mutambo My experience of the Grade 5B Etosha trip was great. I enjoyed the part where I was the first one in my group to light a fire. The second part, which I enjoyed, was when I won a fire-making kit. Kyril Nghishekwa

we went back to our tents, showered and prepared for the braai. We had lots of fun and then we went to sleep. The next morning we woke up at 5:00 and went for a walk and then had breakfast. We went on a game drive and came back. That night, we had a potjiekos competition, a concert and then we went to sleep. We woke up, packed the bus and drove back. Melissa Maischatz My favourite experience was the potjiekos. It was such fun. It was like a MasterChef Junior Competition. The girls’ and boys’ food was so good. I learned how to make fire and how Bushmen lived. The knots we learned to tie were fun and challenging.

Kyle Allies When we arrived at Etosha, we ate lunch. Then we went to the campsite. Then we went on a game drive. We saw giraffes, zebras, wildebeest and bokke. We went back to the camp and chilled. We had a braai, which was amazing, and then we went to bed. Then the next day we made fire. Zoe Waldschimdt My best experiences were when we ate delicious food, made fire, swam, ate lunch, made rope knots, slept in the tents, the game drive, counted the stars, went to the water hole and found pictures. Mukena Mukena My experience of the grade 5B Etosha trip was amazing. It was my first time camping and I did not know what to expect. My favorite part of the camp was doing the potjiekos competition. The only thing that I didn't like was the freezing cold pool. On a scale of one to ten, I would say nine.

Alvin Mutua I enjoyed the breakfast buffet every morning and the potjiekos competition, which the girls won. I enjoyed gazing at the stars and going for a hike. What I enjoyed the most was having fun with all my classmates. Kaylin Shebo My experience at Etosha was great because I won cool prizes and one of them is a free trip to Etosha. What we did and what we learned was really amazing. We went on a game drive. We completed rope challenges and a potjiekos competition, which the girls won. Al the things we learned were facts I never knew. I thought the meat of the braai was extremely delicious. The girls’ potjie was also very good. The prizes I won were a free trip, binoculars and a beanie. Ishayvani Kahimise My experience was so much fun. I learned how to make fire with natural resources and learned how to cook a potjiekos. I saw how the Bushmen lived. The food at Etosha was delicious and was prepared neatly. When we were about to leave, I ate the most bacon. The bus trip was exciting and we sang songs until we arrived.

Nashe Murape We departed school at 7:00. We were on the bus for 6 hours, then we finally arrived at Etosha Village. It was hotter than I expected it would be, but it was cold at night. When we arrived, we did went to the tents to settle in and then we went to eat lunch. After lunch

93

At Etosha the boys played soccer with a flat ball. The next morning we learned three different knots and we completed a challenge. In the afternoon, we went for a game drive and saw a lot of animals. We also made potjiekos.

Sula Burger When we arrived there, we ate and then we packed our things into the tents. I shared a tent with Joel. The next day we learned how to make fire out of metal and a rock and then we completed an obstacle course. First you have to open gates and then you have to build a puzzle, balance and shoot with an arrow. We also had to walk on planks with our friends. Next we had a potjiekos competition and the girls won. Then we went home.

When we arrived, we had lunch. The spagetti was amazing. My favourite part was when we made potjiekos. I just wish that the boys had won because we really tried our best. It was fun sleeping in tents with friends. The breakfasts were extremely delicious. I was really surprised when I heard that the Bushmen used leaves to make tea. I wish we could have stayed longer. Anthony Jacobs My experience on the Etosha trip was good. I enjoyed all of the things we did. I especially enjoyed all the challenges on the obstacle course and it was so much fun. My team won. We had to sleep in tents, but I managed. We had a lot of delicious food. I especially liked breakfast and the bacon. On Tuesday, we had a nature walk and it was fun. Uncle Hein and uncle Chris hid things from us which we had to look for as we walked. I did not spot a lot of things though, but it was fun. I really enjoyed Etosha. Anesu Chipfupa We were there for three days, 12-14 June. It was very exciting and we had loads of fun. We arrived at 13:15. We had lunch and it was finger-licking good. We slept in tents and it was luxurious. There was a matress with a blanket and pillow. My roommate was Melissa. We had a lot of fun in our tent and I had to use a torch, since there was no electricity. The second day we woke up at 05:00 and went for a walk. During the walk we had to spot a few things and the winner would get a prize. Ishayvani won. We also had a short swim to cool off from the boiling sun. After that we had a potjiekos competition and the girls won, obviously. It was stressful, but our presentation was better. We had a campfire concert on stage. On the third day we learned how to make different knots and we had a competition. I didn't win. Lunch was delicious. There were 3 prizes and Ishayvani won all of them. I wish we did not have to say goodbye and I hope to see them again soon.

Talita Barros When we arrived at Etosha I was extremely excited for what was going to happen. We first had lunch and then went to our tents. We settled down for a bit and then went for a braai. The food was delicious and filling. We did stargazing

The best part of the Etosha trip was making fire so we could eat delicious potjiekos. Afterwards, we had a fire concert. Nashe, Anthony, Max V, Max M, Tendo, Mukena, Kyle and I were in an act together called, “Beat from the Street.” The worst part of the trip was losing against the girls in the potjiekos competition and the rope challenge. We also had to clean up the bus on a school day because it was dirty. Joel Hiveluah

We travelled to Etosha by bus. Then uncle Hein and uncle Chris gave us an introduction. We had lunch and went to our tents. We went on a game drive and saw giraffes, wildebeest, zebras and an eagle. We went back to the tents and later had a traditional braai. We went to bed after that. Tuesday morning Zoé woke me up and we got dressed. Ms Johnston came to wake us up, but we were already dressed. We went on a hiking trail and then had breakfast. We learned how to make fire and about the bushmen. We also did an obstacle course. Florette Nakusera When we left for Etosha my heart leapt with excitement. It took us 6 hours to drive to Etosha and we went to bed early. We woke up early the next day and went on a hiking trip. We had breakfast and it was the best breakfast I have ever had. We went on a game drive and we did not see many different animals. We mostly saw giraffes. We did an obstacle course. It was a lot of fun and it was very long. That evening we had a potjiekos competition. Afterwards we had a campfire concert and that was awesome. We went home the next day.

Max Voges We drove to Etosha by bus. While we were on the bus, it was first boring and then fun, because we all made funny jokes. When we arrived, we ate lunch, spaghetti and mince. After that, we went on a game drive. We saw impala, giraffes, gemsbok and springbok. It was a lot of fun. They told us about the stars, which was really cool. I think I learned a lot, especially with the toilet paper rope. I learned a lot from the Etosha trip. Liam Martin

and saw a few star signs. The next day we had breakfast. I ate flapjacks with nutella, cookies and tea. Uncle Hein then showed us how to make fire with grass. My favourite way of making fire was with a magnifying glass. We learned how to make different knots and how to make a rope with toiletpaper. We had a potjiekos competition and the girls won. After dinner we had a show for the judges. We went to bed early. I really had a good time. Anassa Jordani

95

One day my class, Grade 5B, got onto a bus for a trip to Etosha village. It was a six hour drive. When we got there, we met two friendly men whom were our fun guides for the three days. After meeting them, we had lunch and we stayed in tents. I shared a tent with my friend, Liam. Later that day we went on a game drive and when we came back we had an excellent braai. The next morning we woke up very early, had breakfast and went to a little place where they taught us how to make fire with no lighters. We also played group games and swam. Then we practiced our little show for our guides and their wives. We made potjiekos. The next morning we woke up early, had breakfast, got onto the bus and said goodbye. Then we drove back for another six hours.

Rutendo Toto

The best part of the Etosha trip was when we went to Okakuejo tower and counted the stairs. The second best part was the food. We ate breakfast, lunch and at dinner we enjoyed a braai. On the second night, we had a potjiekos competition and the girls won. We had a great time. Bethany Branch

The bus trip was long, but I enjoyed talking to my friends. What I loved was when we got to camp with our friends and tell stories. One of the things I discovered was that waking up early is not easy. I loved when we did the evening entertainment for Uncle Hein and Uncle Chris and their wives. It was so fun to be one of the hostesses. It was memorable. The food that Uncle Hein and Uncle Chris braai was delicious. Uncle Hein showed us the stars and the information was very interesting. I loved the group challenges and enjoyed the scary stories that people were telling. Uncle Hein taught us how to make fire out of straw and he told us about how some Namibians lived in the olden days. When I went to the gift shop, I loved what I bought. The only thing I didn’t enjoy was the line at the shop was so long. My friend pulled m in the pool with my clothes on, but it was funny. The MOST fun, exciting, best time of Etosha trip was the potjiekos competition against the boys and the girls won. Brunhilde Gaidzanwa

96

On the long bus ride to Etosha, everybody was talking and I was trying to relax and calm down. When we arrived at Etosha, I was excited. Kaylin and I took our bags out of the trailer and went to find our tent. It was extremely hot. Uncle Chris and Uncle Hein made a fire and we had braaimeat on Monday evening. Then we showered and went to bed. On Tuesday morning we had to wake up at five o'clock. It was very cold and the inside of our tent was wet. We went to the breakfast table to have breakfast. It was delicious and I had flapjacks. After breakfast we went to buy souvenirs, and then we swam. By that time, it was one o'clock. We had lunch and then we learned how to tie knots. It was really fun and I enjoyed it a lot. We showered and then went to see what everyone else was doing. We had to choose team captains. We had a potjiekos competition. The girls beat the boys and it was such fun. On Wednesday we woke up at six o'clock. We ate breakfast and then we learned how to make a toilet paper rope. Then we had to come back to Windhoek. Grade 7As Adventure

Adventure to Swakopmund and Gobabeb The buses’ engines churned and we went whizzing away to The Wild West‌ A whole New Frontier: Gobabeb. But, before we were to reach Gobabeb, where would the adventure begin...? The escapade began in Swakopmund. The crashing waves, flanked by the sandy dunes, painted an ethereal glow over the area. Though that was only the tip of the iceberg, the creatures and plants were the real stunners. We went to the beach to investigate the rock pools at low tide and trekked through the desert with our knowledgeable and charming guide, Mr Tommy, on his living desert tour. Swakopmund was the last shard of civilization before‌ We moved on to the dusky and deserted land of Gobabeb. As soon as we arrived, what enticed us was the eerie silence that surrounded the area. Not to mention the stunning silhouette of the world famous Namib Sand Sea. Our expedition progressed, where we learned about the critters and animals that reside in our renowned desert, including, the minute barking gecko, and the deadly yet enthralling scorpions. Meg, our petite yet tremendously brave and intelligent guide, enlightened us on everything from the Nicotiana glauca to the Acacia erioloba. Though we learnt something about the organisms in the Namib Desert, we learned a great deal about ourselves and who we strive to be be in the future. Our different instructors taught us about fog-harvesting plants and magnificent constellations in the Milky Way galaxy. This outing was an outstanding experience that we will remember for the rest of our lives. Alicia-Lee Hansen, Danielle Motinga

Faith Kauta

Ek is so lief vir Mamma. Summer Diergaard

Mamma, Dankie dat Mamma altyd daar is vir my. Jy is die beste ma in die wêreld. Dankie vir jou liefde, dankie dat jy geduldig is. Mamma jy is spesiaal. Jy maak my groot op die beste manier. Jy maak my altyd gelukkig as ek hartseer is.

Geseënde Moedersdag! Dankie vir alles wat jy vir my gedoen het en alles wat jy nog doen. Dankie vir my lewe. Jy is die beste ma in die wêreld. Ek is life vir jou!

Charl Malan

Ek is baie life vir jou. Geseënde Moedersdag! Kondja-oua Ngairorue

Grade 5 The Gr 5 classes invited the N/a’ankusê biologists for an information session about animal conservation. We were privileged to have Mr Hanlo Fouché who presented a lecture about carnivores, especially the big cats like leopards, cheetahs, wild dogs and lions.

Mr Francois Thiart is an expert in the field of snakes. He lectured us about different snakes, the importance of snakes in the environment, and that snakes will never attack a human unless it is in danger. He also pointed out that there is no truth in the myth that snakes always “slither” in pairs. Francois brought different snakes along to identify them. The first very poisonous snake was a Black Mamba. He showed us the Zebra snake, which is able to spit very accurately into your eyes. The children enjoyed the Python which they could touch and experience the feel of. Zoë Nott and Ishayvani Kahimise thanked the gentlemen with chocolates. The children watched a video about wild dogs and answered a listening comprehension.

Media Centre & Read-a-thon My sincerest gratitude to all parents for their contributions to the Read-a-thon. This year the theme was ‘Colours of the Rainbow: Diversity in our Nation’. We became involved at the Tobias Hainyeko Project School and other charities. All scholars had the privilege of visiting the school with several parents accompanying the classes on these outings. Collections - We had three Colour Food sales, collectively generating N$ 33 923. - On Thursday, 28 September 2017, the tuck shop contributed an additional N$ 2 000, bringing the total to N$ 35 923. - Clothes, toys, educational toys, soft toys, shoes, bags, stationery, DVDs, books, calendars, and much more were collected during the week. Recipients - N$ 25 000 was donated to Tobias Hainyeko Project School. On Monday, 9 October, Mr Mackarill, the principal and Mrs Cynthia da Purificacao, who is in charge of donations, accepted the contribution on behalf of the school. - N$ 10 000 was donated to the Anusa project. On Monday, 9 October, Mr Ulf Schwicke accepted the cheque towards the Anusa project. Mr Schwicke is the head of the board of Beautiful Kidz. The Anusa project is a subdivision of Beautiful Kidz dedicated to providing recyclable sanitary pads to girls who cannot afford them. It also provides orphans with school uniforms created by formerly unemployed ladies. - Remaining sweets, fruit and cupcakes were distributed amongst street children, the Ouderust Old Age Home and the Katutura Old Age Home. - The puzzles, pre-school books and soft toys went to the children’s wards of the State and Katatura hospitals. - Shoes and clothes were given to the parents of Tobias Hainyeko Project School, the Katutura Old Age Home, and other elderly persons in need. - The magazines were donated to the Ovitoto School in the North. - A number of books went to the St Paul’s library. Duplicates went to two other schools: Tobias Hainyeko Project School and Omaandi Combined School in the North. Below is an extract from a letter I received from a teacher at the Omaandi Combined School: “My name is Klaudia, I have schooled in the northern part at Omaandi Combined School, the school has Grade 1 - 10. The school has not been performing well due to many reasons like lack of study materials, student walk long distance to school, due to poverty children go to school on empty stomach, lack of understanding of the importance of education by both parents and children, language problem (kids speak vernacular / Oshiwambo at home and being taught in English), lack of extra materials (e.g. story books), no TV in the villages and thus they missing out on kids programmes... just to mention but a few.” - Tobias Hainyeko Project School received the donated kitchen utensils and non-perishable food.

147

- Wash cloths, soap, toothpaste and body cream was donated to the Ouderust and the Katutura Old Age Homes, as well as 120 children from Dagbreek. - Videos went to a primary school in Dordabis. During the Reada-thon of 2015, we donated a television and video player to this school. - Miscellaneous donations (such as curtains, bookbags, lunch boxes, sheets, etc.) were donated to Tobias Hainyeko Project School. In every grade, the four scholars who read the most received a book prize and a certificate. The scholar who read the most overall was Zarah Zukoro, Grade 2A. The class that returned the most reading slips and read the most was Grade 2A. They received a floating trophy. Given the massive contribution made by everyone, we did not have an official class winner this year. Each class had the opportunity to do further outreach and deliver donations to an organisation. In addition to the above, the Grade 2s visited the SPCA, and the Grade 3s visited a nursery. The bookmarks made by the Grade 5s were included in a gift package to the children of the Maerua Orphanage. On the 20th October, the Grade 4 classes went to the Dagbreek School to help and support them with their marketing day. It was also the official opening of Dagbreek’s recycling project and was televised by NBC and broadcast by Channel 7. Parents were welcomed to join us on any of our outings. Once again, thank you to every parent, child and teacher who helped to make this year’s Readathon an astronomical success. In addition, due to the generous contributions of parents throughout the year to the Library Fund, we purchased books to the value of N$ 24 000 for the Primary School, and N$ 21 000 for the Secondary School. Without your financial support to our Library Fund these additions would not have been possible. I want to invite the parents to borrow books from the library or just to visit our Media Centre. Please help me to encourage a reading culture in our school and our community. Our motto, after all, is ‘Knowledge is Power’. All praise and glory be to God who has blessed us and so called us to be a blessing to others with our positive attitudes and willingness to give. Acts 20:35 “ And remember the words of the Lord Jesus when He said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.”

Sport Archery Archery at St Paul’s is growing from strength to strength. As always, many children sign up at the beginning of the year to join the fun. This year most of these eager archers continued with the program until the end of the year. We are also happy to see archery growing in the High School as last year’s Grade 7s continued to practice the sport. Once again St Paul’s featured at all the competitions that were hosted all over the country. We are extremely proud of each archer’s scores, as they improve steadily from one competition to the next. Archery in the Schools Programme has expanded to most of the regions of the country. With this expansion, the competition is becoming stronger as there are more than 200 archers on the ranking list. At the National NASP competition held in September, the St Paul’s Junior A Team (Damian Beukes, Kyril Nghishekwa, Robbe Dewulf, Erica Nande) came fourth. Erica Nande came 7th overall from all the junior girls and Alana Adonis came 5th from all the senior girls. Carmen Hellmann was the most improved girl for 2017. Alana Adonis was selected to be part of the Namibian Development Team which participated at the Africa All Star Championship. Namibia received the silver award at this event. It was a great group to work with. Their skill and accuracy improved tremendously during the year. Their concentration and ability to focus also improved. We would like to thank Mr and Mrs Dewulf for their consistent support and help, both at practices and at competitions. We really appreciate the love and dedication they show towards the children and the sport. The Junior Archer of the Year: Damian Beukes Suzánne Jacobs BAI

Cricket The season started slowly in the nets. We will remember this year for not having a field to practise on (due to the drought). Todd Parker, Ryan Moffett and Jack Parker made the Namibian U13 teams that will go to RSA to compete. Charlie Lohmann made the U11A Namibian side, and Ramsay McDonald made the U11B side. Unfortunately, both had to withdraw because of set arrangements.
