This year, we embark on a thrilling journey across the vibrant landscapes of the African continent and its diaspora, showcasing 94 extraordinary films from 38 countries. Our opening night promises to enchant with the captivating “Nakupenda” by Juma Sada of Tanzania. As we gather for this extraordinary event, we celebrate not just the art of filmmaking but also our unwavering commitment to connecting Communities, Cultures, and Continents. Over the past 14 years, SVAFF has stood as a beacon of authenticity, illuminating the genuine stories, aspirations, and dreams of Africa and its diaspora. In a world thirsty for fresh narratives and diverse voices, we take immense pride in presenting over 50% of our festival’s films as World or North America premieres. BLACK WOMEN IN TECH PANEL Lisa Gauthier serves as Mayor of East Palo Alto, having been elected to the City Council in 2012. She previously held roles as Vice Mayor in 2014, 2018, and 2022, as well as Mayor in 2015 and 2019. Gauthier is currently Senior Vice President of Inclusion & Belonging at the Silicon Valley Leadership Group, leading key policy areas. She also worked as Government Affairs Manager at Study.com. Her contributions extend to board memberships and accolades for community involvement.

Shannon is Wing’s CFO, an Alphabet subsidiary, and an independent director on boards like NetScout Systems Inc. and SoFi Bank. She chairs Lazy Dog Restaurants’ Board and Audit. She advises Black Women on Boards, How Women Lead, and mentors at Santa Clara University. Shannon serves on the CalCPA Diversity Equity & Inclusion Commission. Recognized in Silicon Valley and finance, she’s legally qualified, a CPA, and on the University of Virginia McIntire School of Commerce advisory board.

Toni Vanwinkle is VP Employee Digital Experience at Adobe. A 25year tech executive and DEI advocate, she leads diverse teams in innovation and change management for startups to Fortune 500 firms. Recognized as DWG Digital Workplace Leader of the Year in 2019, her team also earned the CIO100 award for innovation in 2021. Toni mentors, founded Adobe’s Black Employee Network (BEN), and serves on non-profit boards like the American Leadership Forum. She’s a proud parent of four adults, two granddaughters, Dobby - her dog.

Saidah Grayson Dill is the Deputy General Counsel at Cisco where she leads Cisco’s Global Employment Law and compliance team, overseeing 80,000+ employees across 100+ countries. She advises on employment law, acquisitions, litigation, compliance, investigations, and diversity. Dill ensures Cisco’s policies align legally and culturally. She speaks at conferences on law-business intersections and has earned accolades from The Network Journal. She also holds leadership positions in professional and community associations.

Homeland, A Song for Refugees is a thought-provoking documentary film that delves into the lives of refugees and their day-to-day struggles with displacement, xenophobia and the need for social cohesion. The film stars music legends, Yvonne Chaka Chaka and Sipho ‘Hotstix’ Mabuse. and is based on Neill Solomon’s epic composition developed in partnerships with the Turquoise Harmony Institute.

Filmmaker Sihle Hlophe has just gotten engaged. A few days later, her father passes away. Sihle is in a serious fix - who will receive the Lobola now that her father is no more? Sihle respects Lobola but she has reservations about the transactional, patriarchal and heteronormative elements of the practise. In an effort to learn more about Lobola before making her final decision, Sihle attends the Lobola ceremonies of three other couples.

Through their experiences, nature, and its relationship to fostering resilience, and human wellbeing glow.

Love and neglect must be faced before they can truly embrace the future.

The discarded boy who so many believed was fated to only being able to crawl soon discovered his life’s calling ignited: Gatera would dedicate himself to learning all there was to know about creating artificial limbs. He did help others like himself, and the survivors of the Tutsi genocide so much less fortunate, to walk surefooted, stand strong and tall, and even dance.

Albinism is a condition associated with systematic discrimination in Africa, Steven Chikosi’s documentary interrogates the attitudes of Africans towards their kin, based on the color of their skin.

This film explores the religion of Ancestral Callings in Botswana that has reduced in popularity for over half a century since the country’s independence . Conversations with Sangomas and Traditional Healer on their experience of this inherited faith and how they preserve it in the everchanging new age.
